VANDALISM - On the 1 9th July at Valleyfield pond

,vandals smashed the duck house that floated on the pond ,removed the nest in it and smashed most of the eggs. A duck was also found dead by the pond. I went down the following day to remove the duck as it was distressing to young and old alike, but predators had taken it during the night.Empty vodka bottles and lager cans have been found in and around the pond. A local resident has taken the house away to repair it and hopefully we can get it back on the pond again. Recently a Grey Lag goose was also killed by a boy with a catapult at the same spot by the pond. It is simply mindless vandalism

COUNCILLOR’S REPORT FROM DEREK ROSIE -

Since my election on 4th May I have been looking at areas within Penicuik where I can make a difference to the environment and peoples lives. I will give an idea of what I have managed to achieve and other projects that I am progressing. I am arranging for a tarred footpath from Brunstane Gardens to the bridge across the Lawhead Burn, this will replace the present muddy path and give a good link to the Cuiken Glen path. A path from Rullion Road towards the A702 which is in a poor state will be improved thanks to Margaret Wilson who made the final payment from her Environment Budget to make this possible. While on the subject

derelict garages at Loanburn demolished and removed. Had to report that parts of garages left along with rubbish, this will be tidied up. I hope to have an Induction Loop installed in the Town Hall to assist the hard of hearing. Speed signs at Howgate and Peebles Road are being replaced. I have received a number of complaints regarding the rerouting of the 47 bus, which now diverts at Surgeons Hall along Laurieston Place to Tollcross then down Lothian Road. Apparently this is after Lothian Buses received numerous requests from Penicuik residents. At present it appears that it is 50/50 for and against and I must say my unscientific survey backs this up. It is very important that if you

of paths I would like to see a team of local volunteers who use the local paths on a regular basis, who can identify small repairs and improvements. If anyone is interested in joining this team please contact me on 01 31 271 31 00. I would like to get a map of the path network within Penicuik produced which would show links with longer distance paths such as to the Clerk Estate, Dalkeith, Eddleston and the Pentlands. The map would show places of interest in Penicuik and the area around, this could tie into work ongoing to encourage people to visit the town. Arrangements were made to remove two trees which have come down across the Esk at Eskbridge, this has now been done. Arranged to have two

have an opinion either way on this matter that you make it known to Lothian Buses, as I am led to believe that this is only being trialled at present. Following resurfacing of the precinct a resident raised problems after the work was completed. Metal grills not returned to the base of trees, chain at bollards missing which allows vehicles free access, slates around flower beds broken and a broken wooden bench. This was one of the issues I raised at a meeting with Head of Dept, all will be put right. Also dealt with problems from surgeries which were still carried out during recess.
