PENTLANDS SWRI - This month we welcomed
Cathy Burns, a home economist from Sainsbury’s Try Team, for a cookery demonstration. Cathy shared a number of recipes with us, from a cheese and herb soda bread through to salmon risotto and a delicious lemon posset. She led us through the recipes and shared many helpful tips during her demonstration. A great evening was had by all, and to top it all off we were given samples of each delicious dish to try! The U3A is a national organisation which draws on the knowledge, experience and enthusiasm of its members to offer the chance to learn new skills or take up new leisure pursuits. She advised members that she is working to do something about the high visibility “To Let” signs that proliferate our Town Centres. This gives a poor impression to visitors to the Town and there must be a better way to advertise the availability of premises. She is glad that the Scottish Government is taking steps to reduce the advantage that Landlords have in leaving their premises empty. The fact that they will have to pay more in Business Rates will encourage them to try harder to lease their shop or office. Christine has invited local businessmen and women to the Scottish Parliament for a working business lunch and a meeting with the Minister. After the summer recess Christine’s surgeries at Tesco have resumed on the 4th Saturday of the month from 1 1 .00am to 1 2.00pm. Thanks to all those who supported the Branch’s stall at the Street Fair on 25th August. Despite the rain it was heartening to see such a good turn out from Penicuik residents. The winners of our guess where the bear went on holiday competition were Rebecca Martin and Derek Wilson and the answer was Australia.
Margaret Wilson spoke about the recent vandalism and killing of ducks at Valleyfield Pond and the steps being taken to identify the culprits. Derek Rosie advised that a meeting had been held between the Police and Jack McGowan of Penicuik Crime Prevention Panel. Leaflets have been distributed around all the households in the Valleyfield area and Police posters have been displayed at and near the pond. Police are also increasing patrols in the area. Recipe Idea
Spicy Thai Prawn Noodles These spicy noodles are packed with classic Thai flavourings – fragrant lemon grass, fiery hot chilli pepper and pungent root ginger. With meaty king prawns and crunchy vegetables they make a great healthy supper on the table in under 30 mins. Serves 4 - Ready in 25 mins 250g packet medium rice noodles 2 tbsp sesame oil 1 red pepper, deseeded 1 yellow pepper, deseeded 6 spring onions, trimmed ½ red chilli pepper, deseeded 1 stalk lemon grass 2cm (1in) piece root ginger, peeled 300g (10oz) raw king prawns 4 tbsp lime juice 2 tbsp soy sauce 1 tbsp sugar 2 tbsp fresh chopped coriander stalks Fresh coriander leaves, to garnish
noodles and toss them gently to coat in the oil. Set aside.
Thinly slice the red and yellow peppers and the spring onions. Finely chop the chilli and lemon grass and grate the root ginger. Heat 2 tsp of the sesame Cook the rice noodles according to the packet seed oil in a large frying pan. instructions. Drain well and rinse under cold running water. Add the peppers and spring onions and continue stir-frying over a high heat for a further 1-2 mins until the prawns are completely pink and cooked through. Add the rice noodles to the pan and toss well to mix. Whisk the remaining chilli, lemon grass, ginger and oil with the lime juice, soy sauce, sugar and coriander stalks. Pour over the noodles and heat through for a further 1-2 mins.

PENICUIK ATHELETIC FC - The League season
kicked off on 1 st September with a hard earned 2-2 draw at Perth against Jeanfield Swifts. We followed this up with two home ties against Armadale Thistle which we lost 1 -2 and drew 1 -1 with Dalkeith Thistle - not the best start to the season. We head off down the coast to Dunbar for the first round of the Fly Emirates Scottish Junior Cup on Saturday the 22nd September, then we have two League games, away to Newtongrange Star on the 29th September and at home to big spenders Ballingry Rovers on
the 6th October.
Penicuik Athletic Lottery - The Penicuik lotto numbers for 8/9/1 2 were 4, 23, 26, 30. There were no winners. Three numbers paid £20. The following week's jackpot will be £300. Each week Lottery tickets will be available at various outlets in Penicuik, from any committee member and on match days. Pick four numbers and you will win the Jackpot. If the Jackpot is not won, then the money will be carried forward each week increasing the jackpot prize. The draw will take place every Sunday afternoon at various locations in Penicuik.
