She advised members that she is working to do something about the high visibility “To Let” signs that proliferate our Town Centres. This gives a poor impression to visitors to the Town and there must be a better way to advertise the availability of premises. She is glad that the Scottish Government is taking steps to reduce the advantage that Landlords have in leaving their premises empty. The fact that they will have to pay more in Business Rates will encourage them to try harder to lease their shop or office. Christine has invited local businessmen and women to the Scottish Parliament for a working business lunch and a meeting with the Minister. After the summer recess Christine’s surgeries at Tesco have resumed on the 4th Saturday of the month from 1 1 .00am to 1 2.00pm. Thanks to all those who supported the Branch’s stall at the Street Fair on 25th August. Despite the rain it was heartening to see such a good turn out from Penicuik residents. The winners of our guess where the bear went on holiday competition were Rebecca Martin and Derek Wilson and the answer was Australia.

Margaret Wilson spoke about the recent vandalism and killing of ducks at Valleyfield Pond and the steps being taken to identify the culprits. Derek Rosie advised that a meeting had been held between the Police and Jack McGowan of Penicuik Crime Prevention Panel. Leaflets have been distributed around all the households in the Valleyfield area and Police posters have been displayed at and near the pond. Police are also increasing patrols in the area. It is planned to produce cards which will be handed out to regular users of the paths which will strongly encourage them to report any incidents of vandalism or suspicious behaviour to the Police phone Penicuik Police Station 01 968 6751 91 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 1 1 1 . Anyone interested in joining the Scottish National Party or requiring information please contact Margaret Wilson on 01 968 677335. Next meeting Thursday 25th October in Navaar Hotel at 7.30.

It manages to combine being technically very well made, an excellent cast, glorious cinematography and a gripping script. Christopher Lee gives a magisterial performance as Lord Summerisle, leader of a pantheistic Celtic ritual that brings the island to a terrible frenzied climax. (88mins) Sunday 28th October The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (18) - With the recent television popularity of police dramas from , here we show the Swedish version of The Girl with the Dargon Tattoo. Like Wallander, it is a crime thriller recently reworked in an English-language version but here you see the raw power of the original. A journalist Mikael Blomkvist and a tattooed computer hacker Lizbeth Salander investigate how, 40 years ago, Harriet Vanger vanished from the Vangers’ island home during a family gathering. They begin to unravel a dark and appalling family history - the original title was “Men who hate women”
