RELEASE FROM COUNCILLOR MARGARET WILSON As a councillor part of my remit is to conserve and improve Midlothian’s environment . I am supporting the natural environment of Penicuik to encourage people to walk, cycle or run in a safe and enjoyable area. I care a great deal about the area in Valleyfield which has as part of its natural beauty, a thriving duck pond. This pond is not only there to be enjoyed by young and old for it’s wildlife diversity, it exists to help our local schools in their educational pursuits. Thanks to the Local Ranger (Alan) and also the the Officers in Land Services at Midlothian Council for their time and knowledge in helping care for this area. The pond has really thrived with 40 ducks and many more moorhens, coots and 1 solitary Canadian goose. We also have newts, frogs, water beetles and numerous wet land plants. The pond needs a lot of care and attention to stop it stagnating and to ensure a constant flow of fresh water reaching it. I have decided to help in this important work by channelling
some of my environmental fund into improvements in this area. I will give you all a preview of proposed projects I have set up with officers and the Rangers. Valleyfield Pond 1 0m boardwalk adjacent to pond edge and small path. New drainage to improve seating and picnic area. From Pond to Mill Lade Create wildlife area on grass banking adjacent to path. Woodland Path Above Main Walkway Nature Trail New steps to be placed there and sections of boardwalk to improve access. Eskbridge/Harpers Brae New field gate and posts and timber fence at entrance. Eskbridge Car Park to Harpers Brae New planting with native trees and shrubs. PENICUIK & DISTRICT BRANCH SNP At the Branch meeting held in the Navaar Hotel on Tuesday 1 1 th October 201 1 Convener Joe Wallace welcomed those present. He went on to tell members that there had seen a substantial increase in the Branch membership since the fantastic election victory in May. What is more pleasing is the fact that a lot of those joining have done so in recent months. This would show that they are happy with

Community the performance of the SNP Government to such an extent that they have been moved to join the Party. In his capacity as Convener of Midlothian Liaison Committee Joe told members that should the SNP take control of Midlothian Council next May there will be hard challenges ahead. Most of this could be brought about through Labour’s use of the flawed and discredited Public Finance Initiative to build 8 new schools in Midlothian. The GMB union through the use of the Freedom of InformationAct discovered that South Ayrshire Council has been left with a £400 million debt to a group of private companies after being forced to borrow cash to build 5 new schools. New figures show the debt amassed by South Ayrshire Council is so large that the local authority will have to spend £1 million a month for the next 30 years to pay back the deficit. Last month it emerged that Scots will pay for schools and hospitals funded by the controversial Public Finance Initiative for more than a century. Contracts for projects such as Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and Hairmyres Hospital at East Kilbride have “hitched” taxpayers to paying land leases to firms for 1 30 years.
All the evidence now coming to light shows
that the present Scottish Government has been shown to be correct in ceasing the use of PFI as a way to fund projects. Councillor Margaret Wilson gave a report on behalf of the SNP Group on Midlothian Council. She went on to tell members “ We all want Penicuik, Midlothians biggest town, to be a warm and welcoming place for residents and visitors. I have used my budget to revamp an area of John Street that has suffered much neglect over the years. At one time this area had many flower beds filled with roses, but sadly now they are empty and full of rubbish. Many people pass by this area and I hope they will enjoy the new planters filled with seasonal flowers and the new trees when they are in bloom. New kerb stones have been laid and new covering for the area in which the

Community planters sit. I hope this brings back some civic pride to the town as not enough has been done to clean up and reinvigorate certain main areas in our town. I will do all I can to reverse this trend”. Margaret advised that she has asked for a traffic report on the busy junction at the bottom of Queensway and Tesco store. Tesco is a nightmare for drivers and also the right turn from the bottom of Queensway onto the main road is difficult. Margaret has requested a filter at the lights at Tesco to ease this right turn and also at the bottom of Queensway. This is long overdue.
