This response has benefited from a discussion with Mr Colin Taylor, Head of Education, at the Community Council’s meeting of 1 3th June 201 1 and the attendance of some Community Councillors at the public meetings held at Beeslack Community High School, Penicuik High School and Penicuik Town Hall.
2. We recognise that something must be done in the light of the present evidence that secondary school pupil numbers will fall markedly between now and 2021 . 3. However, we believe that, at present, there are too many uncertainties to be sure that any decision taken now will be in the pastoral interests of the young people concerned and will provide the educational experience which meets their aspirations and those for them of their parents and teachers. The proposed central option and the variants around it are no doubt all viable assuming the conditions are right: it is the validity of that assumption which concerns us. And that amounts not to whether something should be done, but rather when it should be done. 4. Recommendation – in the light of some significant uncertainties, Midlothian Council should delay for at least two years a decision on the proposed merger to form a dual campus single High School in Penicuik using the sites
TAROT OF THE MONTH Temperance
In a world which seems unsettled the Temperance card emerges to give us a little balance and hope. Now that Mercury is no longer in retrograde (it played havoc with all forms of communication, human and electronic) it feels as if the confusing dark clouds have lifted and the rainbow of hope can now be seen. We all need a little bit of hope and positivity in our lives, if we continually look at the negative, we only attract more of that kind of energy. This month, no matter what life presents to us, keep a positive outlook and most of all make sure YOU make the changes YOU want to see!! There is no point looking out with ourselves for our happiness, look within you to find out what you can do to make your own happiness!! For a full personal reading please go to www.starlightscotland.co .uk or contact Nikki on 07969 848 810.
of the present two schools, or any other of the options indicated in the consultation document. 5. The main factors we have taken into consideration are:a) Parents of the youngsters attending the schools and the youngsters themselves are solidly against the merger proposals: they wish to retain the status quo. We are aware that that is also the view of teachers at the two schools. b) The possible solutions of a single school on a new campus, or by extending one of the schools on its existing site are currently ruled out because of excessive cost. c) The school population projections for the benchmark year of 2021 in the consultation paper are reasonably
secure because they are based on numbers of young people already born and within the range of starting school ages. Moreover, the Registrar General’s latest population projections (published 201 0) show a continuing decline in Midlothian but exclude the effects of migration and new house-building - private or otherwise. However, the effect of that exclusion can be particularly acute when it comes to projecting school-catchment-populations for residential areas within the County - so longer term uncertainty abounds for Penicuik.

Penicuik YMCA-YWCA – Grant Delight The “Y” is celebrating a welcome fundraising boost which will help us to refocus on the services we provide. We have received a £4838 grant from the Lloyds TSB Foundation for Scotland under its Capacity Building programme, which helps charities get professional advice. Having gone through a difficult, recession-affected two years, we now have a revised and forward-looking business plan with the aim of generating more income and driving forward a substantial development of our work with young people. We want to get a dedicated youth development worker who will help us to develop a vibrant community-based hub, mainly for young people. We also hope to widen the range of out-of-school training, and to refurbish the dilapidated Queensway Astroturf court - all of which will require a major fundraising effort. The grant will help us to formulate a funding plan and to progress with a
fundraising campaign.
