THE LOREM IPSUMS

SUMMER 2016

This month’s events Electronics Drive- All Month This month, we continued to donate to Vietnam Mai and Diego Wright’s CAS Project of collecting electronics to help cancer research. Key Clubbers donated anything from ipods, video games, laptops, etc. The donations were greatly appreciated!

Car Wash – May 25th Many Key Clubbers helped Class of 2014 with their annual car wash to raise money for their prom. Even though the weather wasn’t the best, we had still had a blast washing cars!

Relay For Life – May 4th During Relay For Life, we helped to set up the Luminaria for those who made bags for their loved ones who survived or lost their lives to cancer. This event as held at Namaan Forest’s Track and the outside of the track was decorated with sentimental luminaria in honor of those who battled cancer. All around the track, messages displaying hope and love created a peaceful atmosphere. All in all, it was a successful night!

SUMMER 2016

Eliminate Week! May 6-10 Kiwanis International made May 6-10 of this year ELIMINATE Week. All week long, Key Clubbers went around asking for donations to help support this noble cause. Although we generated much success this year, we have even more ideas for the years to come!

Blue Day On May 10, 2013, many Key Clubbers and other supporters wore blue to help spread awareness about the Eliminate Project. Everyone rocked blue and we were sure to get a lot of attention!

Our Goal This upcoming year, Garland High School Key Club has decided to set a goal for raising $1,000 to help The ELIMINATE Project before we go to DCON next year. Hopefully we can incorporate a service project and other awesome fundraisers for it! Any ideas?

Success! At the end of the week, we were able to raise $537 from donations all around the school! We are now more than half way through our goal of 1,000! Big thanks to everyone who participated!

THE LOREM IPSUMS

SUMMER 2016

How did we come up with the idea to raise$1,000 for Eliminate this upcoming year? I really took a liking to The Eliminate Project after I went to the forum at DCON. Some of the LTG informed us on the importance of stopping MNT and also helping to improve sanitation throughout the world. After they explained that it only cost $1.80 to save a mother and her babie(s), I immediately

money! Immediately, I wanted to create my own fundraiser to match that, but after talking to the board, we all decided to start small. We want to impliment multiple fundraisers throughout the year to hopefully raise $1,000. It seems small compared to those heroic children, but I know that at the end of the day, amount, whether big or small, will make a difference. Eliminate week made me so ecstatic over all of the progress we made! For three weeks, we publicized ELIMINATE in our school through posters, Facebook, the announcements and even Twitter. Thankfully, our hard work paid off and we were able to reach more than half of our goal already! We still have much more work to do, but with the right ideas in mind, who knows, maybe we’ll reach $1, 000 much sooner than we think?

thought, how much easier could it be to help eliminate this disease? Anyone could donate money by simply not buying that extra candy bar, donating a bit of the money you’re saving up for a good cause, asking for water and not a soda. We can do so many simple things to help raise money. The forum not only informed me about the impeccable efforts of Kiwanis International, it also motivated me to make sure our club was doing our part in helping Kiwanis reach their goal. One story that struck a nerve with me was the fact that elementary school kids came up with a fundraiser to help was $11,000 for ELIMINATE. $11,000?!?!? Some of them can’t even spell Eliminate, yet they were able to raise a tremendous amount of 5

THE LOREM IPSUMS

SUMMER 2016

Why is it important to Fufill End-the-Year Key Club Obligations? As we transition to a new year, it’s important that everyone is adequately prepared from the beginning of the school year. It’s always a good idea to have a transitioning period. Last month, my newsletter was a complete disaster! However I am glad it was a train-wreck when it was because now I’m more prepared for the months to follow. The change in authority of power reminds me of spring cleaning, in a way. Out with the old, in with the new! April serves as the best month for transitions because it’s when many things are winding down before other activities begin on the summer and fall. Plus, the old board is still around just long enough to help the new board (and thank goodness for them). With new officers well adjusted, Key Club can be run efficiently, even during the summer. “Before anything else, preparation is the key to success.” - Alexander Graham Bell
