COVER STORY Who doesn’t know the theory of Evolution by Darwin? Is there anyone? Probably none! This "theory of evolution" is similar to the "theory of evolution of Design". Evolution of a person from a monkey, we are not moving toward whether this statement is right or wrong, indicates that the evolution in the design composition of organs of a monkey. The transformed and improved design resulted in birth of a person. Hence design is as old as evolution of human race. Design generally is of 3 focet, 1st focet is Fashion, 2nd Style & 3rd Lifestyle. Fashion, is widely known as the style of clothing worn by an individual, and the trend is followed by thousands of people worldwide. We can not deny the fact that the clothes in the modern day play a unique role in our life as a form of personal expression. In ancient times, the clothes were worn for its warmth to protect against the cold. The importance of clothing people stop right there at the time, because people were high on the saying do not judge a book by its cover, which explains their behavior was quite simple. On the other hand, only people formally dressed when they attend an event where men wore bow ties and women wore long frilly dresses. It is said that you cannot dip your finger twice in the same river. It underscores the law of change and flux. Fashion is no exception to this law. They come and go and change rapidly with the zeitgeist. Fashions come into vogue, and then go out because you

By nature, man / woman like fashion because of his / her inherent desire to see and be seen. Existing and new clothing styles and customs, etc., help people to become more intelligent, attractive, fascinating and endearing. People do not like being out of style. Fashion is not limited to etiquette, manners and dresses only. It is ubiquitous and even religion, literature and art, etc. has its own trends and fashions. For example, the thirst for fashion has led to a variety of different writing styles, and there are as many styles as there are famous writers, authors and poets.
Where people see different styles and fashions and then try to imitate or to improve upon the existing ones. Fashion-consciousness in cities is so widespread and deep that as soon as a fashion comes in vogue in London, Paris, New York, Berlin or Rome, it is adopted and patronized by people in Bangladesh. The means of communication are now so fast that the earth has turned into a global village and the infectious fashion knows no boundaries of time and space. People in villages, rural and remote areas are still pristine areas by the waves of fashion, both because of lack of Fashions can also be means clustering of abused and become communication and harmful and when they poverty. COVER STORY fashionable. Fashions are also influenced by glossy, colorful and eye-catching textile advertisements, fashion shows, propaganda of fashion and dress designers, articles in the fashion magazines and foreign visitors. Now people spend a good part of their pocket money and income to stay in fashion. They are very particular about their dress, hairstyle, cosmetics, shoes, jewellery and customs. Has not Shakespeare declared in Hamlet, “The apparel oft proclaims the man”.Therefore dwellers, especially young men and women are always aware of the latest trends in styles and fashions. Consequently, tailors, designers, cosmetics companies have a booming business. They catch new ideas in circulation and pursue fashion products according to the new trends, fashion and thoughts immediately. Fashion design and engineering is now an established branch of human knowledge, science and practice. It provides employment and activity for millions of people worldwide and it has been a huge investment in the industry. Expert designers, engineers, tailors and clothiers are day and night to meet the needs of society consciously busy. They cater not only the taste of people, but also to create taste and fashion, and thus earn huge profits. Freedom is one’s most cherished possession and the freedom to choose one’s lifestyle is of fundamental importance. Therefore, there is nothing to be ashamed of in being conscious of fashion. However, excess of everything is bad and should be avoided. Moderation should be the law in fashion as well. To live in style, dress well, colorfully and smartly makes life lively, attractive and zestful. The industrial revolution led fashion in the spotlight, and since then, the focus has never wavered. stopped. New fashion evolved and old fashion was recorded in history as the fashion of 60s, 70s, etc. It is only in the last second decade of the last century that the second facet of the design, that is style plunged sharply between people and people began to create and maintain their own personal style. It was during this period that the third facet of Fashionlifestyle moved to the aspect of the class / upper middle class & high society. All wore a distinctive lifestyle. The retail value has accelerated the transition from the middle class to a Modern lifestyle. General human tendency is to always follow the latest fashions prevailing in any modern society. Fashions are constantly changing tastes and dislikes to move people, so that even their lifestyle. What was fashionable a few years ago are not so now, and the current fashion trends make a way for new concepts for the upcoming future? In Bangladesh, as elsewhere, the general lifestyle has changed a lot over the years. There is no more isolated and conservative approaches dictates women attitude. It is more than evident in their style of dress. In fact, the current wave of discrete exhibitionist, along the narcissist. The men folk also have a change of opinion and to follow an erratic pattern of life. The trend has intensified with the complete dissolution of the traditional joint family system. Small independent family units that remain cut resulting from its moorings began to behave in unorthodox and stubborn ways. That’s why the lifestyle of our country’s people has also been changed. While the world is moving, the clothes are nowadays more suited to a casual and relaxed lifestyle. To be more precise, shorts and skirts to be shorter, the better. This is especially true for teenagers
who reveal more of their bodies in relation to their grandparents when they were young, to make a personal fashion statement and catch the eyes of others. It is clear that our society is changing day by day and it seems that we are unable to stop it. Research has shown that girls today have clothes that reveal more than half from their bodies, whereas in the past, people were very conservative in their choice of dressing. Some people say that today's generation is forgetting the moral values that have been passed down from their ancestors that boys tend to wear t- shirts with words and images full of dirty vulgarity printed. Actually in fashion & lifestyle, none can say that this one is the best or that one is the worst e.g. you can’t
say that fashion & lifestyle in five hundred year back was not that much civilized, time may come after five hundred years from now people of the then time may say to us that we are such a uncivilized human race who worn cloths! Fashion- consciousness is a sign of good health, as it appeals to and pleases people, foster connectivity, and social interaction gives life to the environment. It is a misconception to link fashion with immorality. But it would be really stupid to spend wildly on the latest fashions and run after them at the expense of valuable time, energy and resources. It's good to be fashionable, but it’s best to be as simple and dignified simplicity with dignity is the best and fashion evergreen. Change is the law of nature and so
desirable and sensitive, but that does not mean running and servile imitation of ideas, blind and dumb, styles, habits and fashions of dress, shoes and hairstyles etc. Our own people conventional standards, customs, traditions are so rich, varied and unique as we can pretty much bank on them to quench our thirst for change, novelty and innovation.

“Kobe
kotha gulo gabo shure”, “Jalo agun jalo, aar manbona tomader”, “Ami bidhatari ronge aka ek osposhto chobi, ami tari kobitay onuprerito bidrohi ek kobi”- these are some very inspiring lines from the rock-metal bands like Nemesis, Arbovirus & Vibe. If we can see through these lines, we will see that these bands are not just playing some instruments or tunes; they are trying to give us some messages, trying to share something with us – the very deep feelings of not being able to express themselves, asking us to raise our voice against anarchy and the cry for trying to reach God. And the appreciation for these bands’ songs is really amazing and shows how much they mean to this new generation of rock listeners.

MUSIC
Before these rock bands became famous, the scenario was completely different. Bands performing rock songs were most likely laughed at. They got terrible criticism and little respect for what they were doing. People back then hardly listen to rock music so it came to them as something wild, something with no meanings. Down-the-back long hair, ripped frayed or torn blue jeans, black T-shirts, high pitched vocals, overdriven guitar tones, dense bass playing and heavy drumming came as a shock that time. Since the British period we have a rich musical background with traditional folk songs, Rabindro songit, Nazrul giti but western rock let alone western classical was never a part of the musical history of our country. Back then only a few bands and artists had the courage to continue during that time. It would be a crime not to mention the name of Pop King “Guru Azam Khan” in this regard. Those bands and artists pushed the boundaries and hanged on to their game. So it took a lot to get the attention of the listeners that time. In the end rock music got acknowledged by music critics and traditional musicians.
Far more than mere musical style rock music has always influenced lifestyles, fashion, attitudes, and language. The influences, passion and thoughts behind this music scene are something greater than it seemed. The rock scene is a like a subculture, with its own code of authenticity. This code puts several demands on performers: they must appear both completely devoted to their music and loyal to the subculture that supports it; they must appear uninterested in mainstream appeal and TV hits and they must never "sell out". For the fans themselves, the code promotes "opposition to established authority, and separateness from the rest of society." Treated differently sounds a little harsh but that is the true picture here. The scenario of rock scene is always changing and will always be. Girls are also getting the hints of rock music lately and number is increasing surprisingly here in our country. They are frequently attending live-shows, concerts, competitions. Even few are seen playing rock songs in stages. To name a few who inspired them greatly are
Pop-artist Mila, Anuseh Andil from band Bangla, Shumi from band Lalon, Kaniz Suborna who specially performed in a metal ballad with band Vikings. There are also many other female fans and artists who are putting their endless efforts in this continuous journey of rock music. Rock music has become a significant part of the mainstream music. Many bands are selling thousands copies of their album in a single day! This may seem quite impossible in our country but Artcell sold thousands of copies of their second album “Oniket Prantor” on the launching day in April, 2006. Bands and record labels are holding album launching performances, parties for these very occasions. Gathering of many artists and fans together continuously has grabbed the attention of critics and media. Different musical TV programs air these occasions live. During these years we have seen many big musical talent hunt shows in our country. It was BATB who first arrange competition of rock bands “Star Search”. From that competition we got bands like Black, Shironamhin, Bangla, etc. Then Grameen phone’s D- Rock Star was another step to bring underground bands under the spot light. The popularity and worldwide scope of rock music resulted in a powerful impact on society. Rock and roll influenced daily life, fashion, attitudes and language in a way few other social developments have equaled. As the original generations of rock and roll fans matured, the music became an accepted and deeply interwoven thread in popular culture. People are giving more attention to the development of rock music and the sub genres of rock music are very promising and influential. Portable music players enabled us listening music while travelling, walking and doing other stuffs. May be it won’t do much harm if we try rock music once in awhile to see if we are really missing something out there.

BICYCLING
A NEW TREND IN BANGLADESH Cycle is now a very popular vehicle in our country. A few days ago it was used only at rural areas. But now-a-days it becomes a trend among the people of every sphere such as students, private job holders, traders and employees of the capital's different markets are the main users of this eco-friendly transport. Right now, the vehicle is not only limited to the younger generation; but also the middle-aged, the elderly and, most importantly, girls are seen cycling as well in the city. Young cyclists are seen performing stunts in their neighborhood streets. From the last two to three years cycling sale has been hiked about 50% than previous years. investors are establishing cycle factories in Bangladesh such as Meghna Group, they already produced bi cycles & exported for last 20 years now they started to supply on local market. The Pran-RFL Group is setting up the country's largest bicycle plant. It has planned to enter both domestic and international markets with traditional and premium quality cycles. Cycling is one of the easiest ways to fit exercise into your daily routine because it's also a form of transport. It saves money, gets a person fit and good for the environment. In average scenario of Dhaka city, cycling requires less time than private car. Most of the time private cars can’t travel smoothly because of huge traffic jam of Dhaka city. But cyclist can reach quickly as it requires little space. Cycling is widely regarded as a very effective and efficient mode of transportation optimal for short to
moderate distances. Bicycles provide numerous benefits comparison with other motor vehicles, including the sustained physical exercise necessarily involved in cycling, that cycling involves a reduced consumption of fossil fuels, less air or noise pollution, much reduced traffic congestion, easier parking, greater maneuverability, and access to both roads and paths. If we look for last few years popularity of bicycle has been increased than motorbikes. Motorbikes have some limitations which can cover-up easily by cycle. Bike requires fuel where cycle needs just oiling into chain, gear & others. As per physiologists long time bike riding is harmful for human body where cycling is helpful for all. Regular cycling can help you to lose weight, reduce stress and improve your fitness.Rrecommended physical activity level of cycling as per physiologists Children under five should cycling 180 mins every day.
SPORTS Young people (aged 5-18) should cycling 60 mins every day. Adults (aged 19-64) should cycling 180 mins every week. Older adults (65 and over) should Cycling 180 mins every month. As a form of exercise, Cycling has broad appeal. Toddlers, pensioners, the able-bodied or people with disabilities can all enjoy cycling if they have the right equipment. It's a low-impact type of exercise, so it's easier on your joints than running or other high-impact aerobic activities. But it still helps you get into shape. For example, someone who weighs 70kg will burn more than 570 calories with an hour’s riding, and tone their legs and bottom. If you ride up hills or off-road, you'll also work your upper body. The best way to build your cardiovascular fitness on the bike is to ride for at least 150 minutes every week. For example, you could cycle to work a few days a week or do a couple of shorter rides during the week with a longer ride at the
weekend. You'll soon feel the benefits. Though cycle is a light weight controlled vehicle, risk of accident will be fewer; if you always be prepared and be aware of other vehicles around you. Avoid common bicyclist errors and common motorist errors committed around bicyclists. Keep your mind always that you will sacrifice 200% when you are on road. 100% for your & 100% for other vehicle which around you. Don’t be over confident in road as you know about road traffic condition of Bangladesh.

The human being is an emotional experience - we all have our moments of joy, sadness, anger, depression, anxiety and a host of other feelings. How can we make of these emotions? Why some feelings more difficult to manage than others? As emotions, the entire world has, in some way relationship with other people. Except if you're a castaway on an island, you can interact with people all the day. TEENAGE LIFESTYLE POWER OF TEENAGERS
A young person is like a fire. Guidelines and directions, he or she may change the shape of the world. Without leadership, the fires of youth are wasted in the best of cases, while at worst, they can become a dangerous, destructive force. To carry out a meaningful life means exploit the fires of youth; but first we need to understand the purpose of the youth itself. The period of teenager is nestled between childhood and adulthood. Teenagers are no longer content to play like children, but do not yet have the knowledge and the experience to be fully engaged in adult activities. The youth is one of the most precious periods of a person's life, and yet one of the most difficult.
TEENAGERS’ ENERGY CAN BE BETTER CHANNELED
To meet the needs of our teenagers in today's society, we must first recognize that their restlessness and hunger for meaning is not material, but spiritual in nature, and that only spirituality can feed the spiritual hunger. To fight a spiritual war, they must be equipped with spiritual weapons. No matter how much a young person has deviated, he has a soul and a separate mission from God. This is the first lesson that the youth must learn - that their lives include a higher purpose; they must use their energy of youth to a good moral and purposes.

This is the constant conflict between the two groups: young people abhor the status quo, while the adults' lives revolve around it.

But rebellion is not the crime; the crime occurs when the rebellion has no output healthy. Rebellion can, in fact, be the healthiest for a human being -- a pure energy, which inspired a person not easily, relinquish, to refuse to tolerate injustice, not to go with an idea just because everybody thinks. We must all sit down calmly with our families, to our young people, and to talk about our lives and our aspirations. For such a communication to be effective, it must be sincere and regular. It cannot surface only in time of crisis. Instead of just relaxing all weekend, designate an hour or two just to talk or going for a walk together. Talk about values, about the difficult decisions that any young must face. Talk about good, about the morality,

The Pages: Now you are a very successful businessman, how have you become that? NC: Actually success depends on the vision of your life. We can say those people successful who can bring their vision into reality.
Success is a relative term, it varies from person to person e.g. a rickshaw pooler may perceive him successful. Some people may have a dream to have a good job, an own flat & a car. Some may like to be a businessperson. Anyone can have this sorts of dream fulfilled, if they can combine three things in their life viz., Vision/Dream, Effort & favor of luck. You will find that the maximum numbers of successful person from our generation have combined these three things which have helped them to reach the pinnacle of success. The Pages: Right now the challenges are different from the challenges of your time, especially competition in every aspect of life. What should our young generation do to become successful? NC: Actually our country is very small in size; exactly the size of a state of USA named Wisconsin. But the population is huge around 16 corers. You will have twenty two lakhs of applicants for job market & every year around fifteen lakhs of unemployed graduates into the labour market. It’s because of the pressure of population. We are in the age of globalization & competing in the free market economy. Here they will survive who are the fittest i.e., those who can compete. But I don’t think that none is incompetent. Those who are industrious and have clear goals they will definitely become successful in this competitive market.
will have to bring all the people of our country under the umbrella of banking system. Still we have 45 to 47 percent of our population are not in the coverage of banking system. We would like to have this population under our service. I have my nine years working experience in American bank. I will try to provide world class service. Besides I will work for the ten millions NRBs. The Pages: What is the difference between NRB Global bank & other conventional bank? NC: Our bank is not that much different from the conventional banks. We will also provide the same service which others banks are offering. Besides we will cover the NRBs who are not getting service from general bank as they don’t have any CIB report available.
The Pages: You are telling about competition, now there are fifty six banks working in our country. What is your planning regarding your NRB Global bank in this competitive market? NC: To run a bank is a pretty challenging issue. The big challenge was to have the approval of this bank & we have faced all the challenges. After overcoming this challenge, we are now in the new challenge to make it successful. It’s a question to someone that how these nine new banks will become successful apart from the fifty six existing banks? But I think that we have still less number of banks compared with the size of the population of our country. Now government is telling to reach Bangladesh in the position of developed nation within 2041. If we really like to reach this position we

Many people have opposed this type of banking. It’s our big challenge to prove them wrong. The Pages: Health is an important part for us. What do you do to keep your health intact? NC: I used to work more in USA. Besides I used to go for exercise regularly. After coming Bangladesh I used to swim in Dhaka club. Right now I am very busy with my bank but I will start physical exercise soon. It’s very important to have a good health. If you feel good after waking up in the morning, it’s million dollars for you. If you don’t have good health, your million dollars will become valueless. The Pages: Tell us something about your family NC: My family lives in Long Island, USA. I was there for twenty five years. After starting the bank I am living here in Bangladesh. My wife Danny Chowdhury, after completing her master’s from CU, left Bangladesh for USA with me. I’ve two sons named- Nabid Chowdhury & Nihat Chwodhury living in USA & carrying out their study in university. The Pages: Tell us the importance of Fashion & Health in career. NC: These are very important for career. To be successful, we will have to have good health as well as fashion awareness. We are as like as vehicle, the more you take care, the more service you will have from it. The Pages: As you were in USA for long time, would you tell us the fashion differences between Bangladeshi & American NC: Most of the Americans are very much aware about their fashion. They have a very good fashion sense. They know pretty well what to wear, when to wear & what not to wear etc. In this aspect, we have a very good chance to improve. Sometimes we see that our tie is not properly matched with our dress, our shoe is incompatible with our dress up, & so on.

Within this periods some peoples aren’t get any free time to meet their regular shopping and all. Due to this reason they have been packed for their regular necessities in week days and then they will decide to go out for shopping to complete their necessary requirements on an- weekend. Most interesting part of the eCommerce growth in future that is the peoples rush hour which is increasing day by day enormously. As example; to fulfill your standard requirements in Dhaka city now people don’t have

After sleeping whole night in
bus I just suddenly wake up by hearing someone’s voice calling me, “wake up man, we are in Bandarban ‘’. My eyes started watching right to left and it’s just wonderful to see green all around the road. Actually we were on a sudden adventure trip for travelling. We mean some of our university students and teachers. It took more than 12hours to arrive us to Bandarban bus stand from Dhaka, in distance that is about 317kms. After getting down from bus we went to Milonchori Hill Resort by ‘Chander Gari’. Milonchori Hill Resort is very well known name for the tourist. Later than we had breakfast and we started our journey to Boga lake at 10a.m. First we went to RumaBazar by ‘Chander Gari’ which took near about 2 hours. As I said earlier this was a adventure trip, so we started our adventure by trekking Ruma-Bazar to Boga lake which was about 22kms.After trekking more than 4 hours we reached to Boga lake and the Sun about to down. All

of us started running toward the highest peak nearby to see the sun set from the top. We stayed the night there in ‘Machang’ which is made by bamboo above from the ground. But it was really unbelievable that they had a very good system for tourists who want to stay there. Along With pillow and blanket they provided food only in 200 tk each. Next day we started Our Journey earlier in the morning at 6 a.m. First we went to Harmonpara and had a very healthy breakfast there. Than off to saikatpara, after then Saikatpara to Anondopara, Anondopara to Ruma Khaal. Lastly we went to the Pukurpara. As like the other day we trekked down from Harmonpara to Pukurpara which took near about 12hours to reach. All of us were so hungry because we had only snacks, glucose and water during this trekking time to stay hydrated. So we had our dinner first of all then we started to make something like camp-fire. Some of us played guitar, few
people started singing and others started dancing. It was a fun end of a rough day. Following day we trekked toward the “Raikhang Jhorna” from Pukurpara and back to Pukurpara spending a rather relaxing day, only hiked for 3hours. As last day was hepatic for us so we tried to stay fit for our most desirable destination which is “Keokradong”, the country’s former highest peak, stands tall and proud surrounded by eye melting gems of beautiful nature. Each and every team member of us wraps up their sleeves and measures the vision to taste what real adventure means. Next day we began our trekking from Pukurpara to the “Keokaradong”. We hiked up the literal steeps up and down about 12hours, with hardly any food during the day time except for water and Glucose to make ourself more hydrated. There were not enough shops to stop by and take a break during the long hike. Of course, that’s very
obvious for us as we the adventurous people wanna make the real adventure. Even By the experienced ones in the tour rated this hike as “The Toughest Hike. After reaching the mountain top, we took in a deep breath of fresh air into lungs and rested for a while. Took a lot of pictures and started shouting to hear the Echo from of hill which we felt better than the music of harmony played by guitar. Everyone just enjoyed the time; Feelings was unbounded; all of us saw the sunset from the highest peak of Bangladesh standing in a row. We stayed there whole night had lots of fun and next day morning we were on a back run to Pukurpara as the same way we went there then off to Dhaka. The team of 26 had done an amazing adventure and achieved something worth mentioning possibly for years to come!

HELTH TIPS There
are many things to be decided and many questions to be solved before a marriage takes place. As early as the matrimonial ritual is over, the moment is solely for the couple, tied up by the solemn vow. Before enjoying long cherished special moment, you have to choose the right contraceptive method if you want to plan your family. Now a days, there are bundles of family planning methods available in the market: temporary, semi-permanent and permanent method. Not all methods are appropriate for newlywed couples and finding the right one, feeling easy and comfortable is not an easy job. It is to be remembered that for newly marrieds temporary birth control method is the better option to postpone pregnancy until they are emotionally ready for child birth. Birth control pills:Oral contraceptive (OC) is a hormonal family planning method which primarily function by preventing ovulation. Oral pill is a good option for newlywed couples to avoid unwanted pregnancy. Worldwide pills are the primary contraceptive methods used by women and pills have comparatively minor side effects like nausea, blood spotting, breast tenderness, mood swings, weight gain, low libido and change in vaginal discharge, etc. The mentioned side effects are temporary, and will subside on their own in a few days. It is to be remembered that OCs are to be taken daily and if you forget one, you will simply need to take two in the next day.
70 PAGES
However, if you forget two, then you need to use an additional form of contraception such as condom for the rest of the month. Efficacy: 98 to 99% effective, if taken properly ADVANTAGES • Pills are quite safe • Efficacy rate is high • Help to regularize your periods • Women on oral contraceptives usually have regular, painless menstrual cycles with a reduced blood loss • Long-term use will not affect your future fertility KEEP IN MIND • Start up taking pill from the first day of menstruation • Take pills according to the schedule, without missing even a single dose • Follow the right order • Select a low-dose OC i.e. having low-dose of estrogen and progesterone
CONDOM Condom is a form of barrier method, the most popular contraception especially to newly married couples for avoiding pregnancy. Condoms are known as latex too and help in dual protection: birth control and preventing sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) like syphilis, gonorrhea, etc. Many couples complain against barrier method saying it barricades the enjoyable moment of sex but this is mostly psychological. In many cases condoms fail to avoid pregnancies, this may be mostly due to defective ones or incorrect use of the condom. Possible side effects of latex are allergic reaction, irritation, etc. Efficacy: 76-85% ADVANTAGES • Easy to handle • Limited or no side effect • Free from hormone-related side effects • Relieves women from the burden of using contraceptives
• Easy to conceive after stopping its use • Protect from STDs KEEP IN MIND • Check whether the packet is air tight • Check the expiry date of condom • Take caution when opening the wrapper to avoid tearing the condom with your teeth, fingernails, or rings • Gently pinch the air out of the tip of the condom before putting it on • Leave the nipple of the condom free at the tip of the penis so that semen has a place to collect • Use a new one before every sex • Store in a safe and cool place Emergency Contraceptive Pill (ECP) As the name appears this is an option for emergency use only instead of using as a regular method. ECP is a post-coital hormonal method. The good news is that post-coital contraception is now very effective and safe. If you have a sex without any protection you may take ECP immediately within 12 hours of intercourse. Post-coital contraception can be started as late as 48 hours after the act of intercourse, without affecting its efficacy. ECPs may cause nausea, vomiting, menstrual disorders, such as discomfort, affect the quality of life of the honeymoon period. It will be beneficial for the newlyweds to take standard/ regular methods of contraception and ECPs can be used as the last resort to prevent unintended pregnancy. Where can I get the methods and consultation? Condoms, oral pills and emergency contraceptive pills can be purchased at most drug stores. Consultation is available in Mari Stops clinic, Urban Primary Health Care Centers and other NGO run clinics in urban areas. In rural areas these methods and family planning consultation is available up to community level government hospitals and clinics.

FACEBOOK ADDICTION AND ISSUES Facebook currently has over 1.3 billion you log in to the Facebook app on your Smartphone every now and then during brief moments of non-interactions. If you are login in for more than 2 times a day, it denotes the situation is getting worse Mad Rush To Add More Friends- For some users, Facebook addiction may manifest itself as an intense desire to add more friends. There is a perceived ‘arms race’ between you and your other friends to see who has the highest number of friends on their network. The keyword here is ‘perceived’, because you may think there’s a competition but in fact there might be none (i.e. your friends could not care less about whether they have more or fewer friends than you). The contention on who has more friends may just be your personal quest to be seen as more ‘popular’. your friends is still okay, but if it starts going beyond that, it’s an indicator of a problem. Sure, there’s loads of content on Facebook like photos, games and other interesting apps, but if you start using increasingly more of your valuable working hours surfing aimlessly on Facebook, it’s time to re-examine your lifestyle. The issue gets worse when you actually sacrifice your sleep to use Facebook. It’s as if the amount of waking hours you have aren’t enough for you to satisfy your Facebook cravings. Lack of sleep will undoubtedly affect your performance in school or work the next day, which is when Facebook becomes an addiction problem. Over-sharing at a time when many denizens are concern over the issue of privacy online, it’s strange to find that there are still a number of us who voluntarily share our deepest secrets about our intimate lives on Facebook. It has perhaps a lot to do with the gratification of being acknowledged or approved by our peers. As I’ve mentioned in an earlier article, The Psychology of Facebook, such social affirmations by our friends in our network is a key draw of social networking sites.
Over-Sharing-There’s no basis for me to say that sharing about ourselves is wrong, because each of us have our own social needs to fulfil. It’s what makes us humans. What I’m talking about here is the idea of oversharing, of saying too much and then regretting what we said. When we’re addicted to something, we’ll do anything just to get a satisfying dose of engagement in the activity. So in the case of Facebook addiction, we may become unable to judge what’s appropriate to share, allowing our desire to be heard to override our privacy c o n cerns. users

ADDICTION TO FACEBOOK
Even when you are outside enjoying a drink with a friend, you log in to the Facebook app on your Smartphone every now and then during brief moments of non-interactions. If you are login in for more than 2 times a day, it denotes the situation is getting worse.
Checking Your Facebook Whenever Possible-This means checking out for any updates to your newsfeed or responses to your posts every time you don’t know what to do. In other words, the default choice for your free time activity is to be on Facebook. So what do you do? You leave your Facebook open in the background, switching between work or assignments to the page every few minutes. Even when you are outside enjoying a drink with a friend, Fake Friends- If 8 out of 10 people shown on their Facebook page are complete strangers, it is undeniable: they have a serious case of Facebook Addiction Disorder • 19% of total Facebook gamers confess that they are addicted and 69% of total Facebook gamers are women.
• 20% of gamers have paid cash to gain extra in game benefits • 56 million people play daily which is more than the entire population of England • 290 million people play monthly which is close to the entire population of united states • Most of the Facebook games are fad’s The following are few of the most famous games in the history of Facebook 1. Mafia Wars- It was one among the most played games in 2008-10. 3 out of every 5 user used to play this game during this time. The addiction level for this game was very high during this time. The victory in this game was no of users playing under you. Therefore the addiction got spread all over the world 2. Farmville- Even though most the Facebook games were fad’s, this game was the longest surviving fad in the history of Facebook. People even used to keep alarm and wake up to water their crops and feed their cattle. In 2008 more than 60 million people were addicted to this game. The game also played a integral part for most of the users. 3. Texas Holdem poker- People used to buy virtual chips for real money through credit cards. This denotes the
level of penetration this game has done in the users. During the peak time of this game it used to get around 6000 likes per day.
4. Criminal Case- Currently this is the fastest growing game in Facebook. Around 30% of students of TAPMI are currently playing this game.
Facebook at Offices: The studies conducted by Michigan university sates that the presence of Facebook in offices affects the concentration of the workers. It also decreases the productivity of the workers by 12.5%.The financial loss suffered by most of the companies annually are in millions due to time lost in offices via Facebook. Facebook Affecting Social And Family Life: Family life is being disrupted because parents and children are overwhelmed by the huge volumes of emails and social messaging updates they are handling each day, according to a new study. As a result one in three of us are now desperate to cut down our use of Twitter and Facebook as well as emails. Surprisingly the study, by Cambridge University, found children as well as adults preferred to communicate face to face. More than half of all families said a 'technology-free' time is important and a third of parents said technology had disrupted family life. The findings led family groups to warn that if parents end up spending more time checking emails and social networks than with their children it could have a detrimental effect on the home Amongst children aged 10 to 18, who have grown up with new technology, 38% admitted to that they get overwhelmed when they login in
their Facebook account and see their inbox is full of messages. In depth interview with Ahsik Rahman: We selected Ahsik for interview because he was the only person in this college who didn’t own a Facebook account. When he was asked to mention three reasons why he didn’t join Facebook he mentioned that he found it boring, waste of time and moreover he told there was no value addition through this tool. He also told that he never felt he was missing something in life. When he was asked whether he stayed away from FB because he was afraid of getting addicted he replied ‘not at all’. He also had to overcome lot of peer pressure, right from his college mates, relatives, and colleagues in office to stay away from Facebook, which was his personal choice. He also faced the same in TAPMI also. When asked about general opinion on Facebook he told that people are using this platform just to express their emotions in public. They also use it for fame and to get pampered. Adding to this he also mentioned that this tool was meant to create bonding and effective networking, but people are now misus
ing it. To conclude he also compared Facebook to a knife to define its two sides, both good and bad. In depth interview with Sridhar: We selected Sridhar for in-depth interview because on an average he spends around two hours minimum in Facebook. He is one among the most prominent and regular user of Facebook in our college .He likes around 5-10 photos a day. he says he is a fan of Facebook , not an addict. He login more than two times a day and has this habit of sitting late night with Facebook. FINDINGS: Facebook addiction is a psychophysiological disorder involving withdrawal and delocalization. Once you are addicted its pretty come back from it. It’s just like quitting smoking. Facebook Is an Enabler The meaning of word enabler is to supply with the means, knowledge, or opportunity; make able. Facebook provides people with lot of opportunity, knowledge. It also gives a big platform for business and marketing for this business. It also gives a means for effective and efficient networking and communication.

BIT 2 BITE Facebook, good or bad? Like most of the other tool Facebook also have two faces, good and bad. There are many things said about Facebook, some good and some bad. The biggest question of all is how it weighs out in your life. Actually, there are many advantages of using Facebook. The most common reason for people to use Facebook is to keep in contact with their friends and family. Since Facebook is free, it has become more useful than e-mails or telephones.Using the telephones can be costly especially when it comes to long-distance calls. As for e-mails, they seem to take longer for people to respond to. Therefore Facebook seems to be the best option for people to stay in touch with their friends and family, which is done by uploading pictures, posting status and comment, sending private message and so on. Facebook is best for finding old friends. When a friend goes away to another place we often do not get the chance to communicate with Now, thanks to Facebook, we are able to find and him or her. re-connect with our ex-classmates, schoolmates, former teachers, college friends etc. We can share our feelings and what is happening in and around our daily life through Facebook. We can also get feedback from our friends. It is the best medium to share your feelings and thoughts with others. However, Facebook also has its disadvantages. Some people get addicted and spend too much time on Facebook to update their status, comment on other people’s status, uploading pictures and chatting with their friends. Their time can be put to better use by pursuing other hobbies like sports and games, reading, outing with family and so on. Fake profile is another disadvantage of Facebook. Some people created fake profile and use it to insult and harass other people. The victim ended up having to lodge a police report. In some extreme cases some victims also committed suicide.
The following are some of the advantages of Facebook. 1. Supporting entrepreneurs- Facebook has given entrepreneurs an enormous platform for launching and evolving their business. For example the 15 year old Manuel Otto from Germany became a millionaire in his teenage itself through his game stick run. 2. Platform for marketing- Currently Facebook is one among the most prominent and effective marketing 78 PAGES
platform for almost all businesses. This can also be called a tool for new age marketing. It is comparatively cheap and more effective when compared to other means of marketing. It’s one of the largest site in the world where we are allowed to connect to everyone. Anyone, can take advantage of Facebook to maintain a good relationship with others, who identify with certain tastes or products. 3. Facebook VS E-Mail- Facebook has taken over email through its salient features like convenience, attractiveness and adaptability. It is not monotonous in nature like the emails. There are lot of added features in Facebook when compared to email. 4. Games for development- there are many good games in Facebook like scrabble and words which will help in improving the vocabulary of the users. There are also few games which help the users to improve their concentration. 5. News feed and to stay updatedTalking about positives of Facebook, it’s a real-time social networking site and it’s one of the best sources to stay updated with latest news and updates. Major news usually goes viral on Facebook and you will not miss important updates. Bloggers and Internet marketers can subscribe to popular blog Fan pages and keep themselves up with latest updates. In fact, I have one profile just to gather news. You can see our article on RSS graffiti, which will give you an idea of how you can use Facebook as a personal RSS reader. 6. Effective and efficient networkingNo doubt, Facebook is the most powerful social media and social networking site. You can use Facebook to connect with your family, friends, work colleague and to meet new people. This is the best way to find your school, college or any other old profile. Most of the people who know how to use a computer and internet, have a profile on Facebook. Moreover, it’s easy to find like-minded people by seeing their interests, and you can easily connect with them using wall updates, private message, poke or text, and video chat. Finally:It seems to us that if we were t o judge by all the facts and analysis stated above, leaves with only one dilemma whether Facebook is going to cause the next apocalypse or be the saviour for us all? Surprisingly the answer to the biggest dilemma is very simple, we
can never declare Facebook as good or bad since it's just an enabler. The way we use makes it good or bad. It’s always the choice of the individual where he/she want to lie on the spectrum between Mr. Ahsik Rahman and Mr. Sridhar. Manuel Otto the founder of Stick Run would not have achieved that kind of success at a very young age if not for Facebook. With the emerging trends in digital marketing it’s become mandatory for many companies to learn to grow their business through FB tools. So we can conclude by saying that use FB to form a effective network but not an addiction. BIBLIOGRAPHY & SOURCES OF SECONDARY DATA • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

INTERIOR DESIGN HOW TO MAKE YOUR HOME
LOOK GLAMOROUS Wall cladding is a type of decorative covering used on building exteriors and interiors. Though usually non-structural in nature, it may be functional as well. Why do people install cladding? Modern Cladding materials and methods can actually transform the appearance of your home for the better. And will also protect your property from the elements, insulate your home and can even be applied to interior walls and ceilings. Some of the main reasons people choose to install cladding include:
To alter the appearance of the property – if you’re looking for a way to instantly update or change the design of your home, cladding allows you to effectively build entirely new exterior walls, at a fairly low cost. When refurbishing the interior of your home, cladding can provide a hygienic, easy to clean and install. To provide additional weather proofing and ventilation – external
cladding will provide an extra layer of protection from the weather and fluctuating temperatures which can otherwise cause warping, damp and deterioration. When applying exterior cladding a ventilated cavity is normally installed which acts as a second defense against water, drawing moisture-heavy air up through a gap in the top of the shaft and allowing any left over water to drain out the bottom of the cavity. This technique is most¬ commonly known as ventilated rain screen cladding. To match new parts of the building to old – if you’re building a new extension or converting part of your home, such as the garage, it is essential that the exterior matches the rest of the building to avoid mismatch effect. Cladding new walls with the same material as the existing walls will create a cohesive, tidy design. For interior design - cladding can be applied to the walls or ceilings of any interior room to create a particular design or feel. For example, when designing a
natural, eco-friendly property, it may be appropriate to apply wooden cladding throughout the building. As an alternative to tiling, uPVC cladding can be installed in wet areas like the bathroom, utility rooms or kitchen at a lower cost. This is an easy to clean, hygienic and simple to install option. Which type of cladding is right for your home? If you have walls on the inside or outside of your home that you don’t like the look of anymore, then instead of a new coat of paint, why not try wall cladding instead? By installing one of the many types of wall cladding, you can cover old and seedy looking walls and give them an entirely new lease on life.
Wood cladding – timber is the most popular cladding option; choose from durable hardwoods like oak or less robust softwoods like pine. Different types of wood cladding will require varying levels or maintenance, so make sure you consider this before you buy. Timber cladding is made from naturally resistant or treated timbers that can be installed horizontally, vertically or even
83 PAGES
INTERIOR DESIGN diagonally. The reason timber is becoming so popular these days is simply because it’s such a beautiful material to use on walls, both inside and out; plus, it comes in a variety of finishes, textures and styles. Not only that, but it’s also lightweight, easy to work with and recyclable — and it makes for great insulation. To keep timber cladding in top condition, however, you will have to be committed to regular maintenance.
Stone cladding – stone is a naturally durable, long lasting material which looks great and particularly suits rustic, older properties. Try getting your hands on some reclaimed stone for your cladding to save money. To give
your home an unsurpassed feeling of style and opulence, consider installing stone cladding inside or outside. The reason so many people use stone on their walls isn’t just for its aesthetic appeal, but also it’s durability, low maintenance requirements and protective abilities. Stone is better to use than timber in hot and humid climates because it doesn’t trap heat, but you also have to be aware that it doesn’t hold in warm air in cooler climates, and it is slightly more difficult to install. You can choose from granite, limestone, sandstone, marble, slate — the list goes on.
Brick cladding – is a cheap but effective option. Vinyl cladding is made from PVC mixed with a few other elements to create cladding that is essentially maintenance-free. Additionally, vinyl cladding will never fade, rust, warp, dent or corrode, and it is extremely durable. People also
really like vinyl because it is so affordable and there are almost an unlimited number of options when it comes to styles, colors, textures and patterns. Vinyl is probably the most popular because it can be made to look like timber and is very easy to maintain and clean. Metal cladding – this is a low cost material often used to clad industrial premises, garages or sheds. Steel cladding is generally protected by galvanizing or powder coating, and has been reformed into panels that take on many forms, from traditional cladding design to corrugated panels and sleek, flat panels. Generally for use on the exterior of the home, steel cladding has very high tensile strength, which can add plenty of structural integrity, especially to older homes. Not only that, but steel cladding is weather tight, easy to maintain, and comes in a large array of colors to suit any style.
Make sure that your walls are strong enough to accommodate the extra weight of cladding. Ask a professional or even get some advice from a designer to be sure. Interior and exterior walls must be even before cladding is applied, so carry out any necessary plastering work before you start on the cladding. Make sure that cladding work complies with building regulations regarding fire protection and ventilation. Wood, for instance, should be flame retardant – chemicals can be applied to ensure this. For best results, hire a professional to install your cladding. Style, appearance, cost, durability, performance, environmental conditions and maintenance are all issues to consider when selecting building claddings. The cost of installing cladding in your home will depend mostly on the type of material you choose to use and the size of the area you wish to clad. Authentic stone cladding for the entire exterior of your property will cost more, for instance, then applying uPVC/ WPC cladding. Always hire a professional to install cladding for best results; they will make sure that the cladding is applied safely and correctly.

Way Shaila Rumana
A notable man of wisdom. Tarasankar Bandyopadhyay chief contribution to Bengal literature is that he dared writing unbiased. He wrote what he believed and he wrote what he observed. International Mother Language Day Ashfika Rahman
Nation observed 21st February the day of Language Movement. 62 years before in 1952 an organized resistance made a movement against the Urdu dominated Pakistani Colonial Government. We mourned, we felt proud of the Heroes who sacrificed them to protest against the imposition Urdu as an official language in east Bengal instead of their mother tongue Bangla. The movement could successfully save the honor of mother tongue. The nation paid heartiest tribute for them. 21st February has been observing internationally since 17 September, 1999 by the declaration of UNESCO as an International Mother Language Day. UNESCO declaration undoubtedly made a new recognition the spirit of Language Movement. However, it was not only the Language Movement but also catalyzed to establish the Bengali national identity in the then Pakistan; the ruler was in the motive of colonial regime from the very beginning of the Pakistan formation in 1947. The movement then followed the 1954 election, `62’s student movement, six points in 1966 and mass upsurge in 1969. All these movement made a confirm sense of Bengali Nationalist and subsequently, the nation finally went ahead with the Liberation War in1971. Indeed, Pakistani colonial government was in the practice of demolish the chain of Bengali culture; they tried to wipe out the deep-rooted Bengali culture based on Bengali Language and Literature. The leading Bengali scholars made justified explanation the then moment why only Urdu should not be the state language. In this connection we can remember the statement of the linguistic Muhammad Shahidullah (1885-1969) suggested taking Urdo as a second language. Most of all the leading scholars in the east Bengal were in the same line to protest against Urdo to be Rastrabhasa. Abul Mansur Ahmed (1897-1079), pointed out in the right motive to imposition Urdo language in East Pakistan that if Urdu became the state language, the educated society of East Pakistan would become practically detached from the government. However, Pakistan Government finally withdrawn their decision after 21st day’s movement when including Rofiq, Salam, Barkot many other sacrificed their soul.
90 PAGES
CULTURAL NEWS In exchange of their supreme sacrifice Bangla became Rastrabhasa. But Pakistani colonial government was engaged in the deep conspiracy to vanish Bengali literature. A relevant example in this connection is to be prohibitation of Rabindrosongeet and literature in the East Pakistan. Here, they also defeated, on July, 1967 Pakistan government withdrawn the order against Rabindra songs and literature. In this way, consequently Pakistani colonial rule obligated and faced obstruction created by the indigenous people of the then East Pakistan. Actually the spirit of this long journey of struggle against the colonial pattern rule to Liberation war and finally revealed as an independent nation, earned from Language Movement. Even today, Ekushey is our inspiration against all. We remember 21 Febru-
ary with respect for the Heroes who sacrificed for language and honor of mother tongue. From 1952 every year 21 February all Bengali went Shaheed Minar (national monument in Dhaka, established to commemorate those killed during the Bengali language movement 1952) the time sun rise in the earth and give flower to shaheed minar that’s the way Bengali shows their respect for those heroes and remember honor of mother tongue. 21 February is the day Bengali dedicate for mother tongue. In this year 2014, 21 February, Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Honorable President Abdul Hamid went shaheed minar at 12.00 am and shown respect for language. All night and day Bengali shown honor for mother tongue in Shaheed Minar. Dhaka metropolitan Police commissioner Benazir Ahmed gives respect at the
end. 21 February is not just a day to celebrate it is something more for Bengali. In fact, the Ekushey played an important role in making Bengalis aware of their cultural and national heritage and ultimately led to the creation of Bangladesh in 1971. After 1971, even today, the Ekushey has been a guiding philosophy for any movement against oppression, injustice, disparity and denying of civic rights and in the comprehension of the socio-economic emancipation for the people of Bangladesh.

It rises above the aesthetic requirements of a well-crafted photograph, to become an important social document that is gentle, evocative and deeply significant. It is an image many would have missed. A situation most would have passed by and where many photographers would have put their camera away, if only for protection from the elements.” All submitted images were displayed at a special exhibition at Drik Gallery in Dhanmondi.

Bangladesh is a Muslim country and there are different perceptions amongst the people regarding Valentine’s Day. In Bangladesh, Valentine's Day celebrations started in the 1990s, but it has not encountered any resistance so far from any front. Meanwhile, it has gained huge popularity among the young generation. But we have to be careful about not confining love to one calendar day or one occasion only. We should love our friends and family members all year round. Let us accumulate all the sweet moments from our lives and share it with our friends and family.

GLORIOUS TIPS FOR YOUR OWN
“

1. When you click your camera, imagine four lines, two lying horizontally across the image and two vertical creating nine even squares. When a photograph is composed using the rule of thirds the eyes will wander the frame. Some images will look best with the focal point in the center square, but placing the subject off center will often create a more aesthetically composed photograph. A picture composed by the rule of thirds is more interesting and pleasing to the eye. 2. Camera blur is something that can affliction any photographer and here are some ways to avoid it. First, you need to learn how to hold your camera properly; use both hands, one around the body and one around the lens and hold the camera close to your body for support. Also make sure you are using a shutter speed that matches the lens focal length. Use a tripod or monopod whenever possible. In lieu of this, use a tree or a wall to calm down the camera. 3. The idea with the Sunny 16 rule is that we can use it to predict how to meter our camera on a sunny outdoor day. So when in that situation, choose an aperture of f/16 and 1/100th of a second shutter. You should have a sharp image that is neither under or over exposed. This rule is useful if you don’t have a performance light indicator or if your camera doesn’t have an LCD screen to review the image. 4. When photographing landscapes it really helps to create a sense of depth and make the eyewitness feel

like they are in this picture. Use a wide-angle lens for a panoramic view and a small aperture. Introduction an object or person in the foreground helps give a sense of emphasizes how far away the distance is. Use a tripod if possible. 5. The simple approach is usually the best in digital photography, and you have to decide what needs to be in the shot, while not including anything that is a distraction. If possible, choose plain and neutral colors. You want the eye to be drawn to the important point of the image relatively than a piece of color or a funny building in the background. This is essential in a shot where the model is placed off center. 6. Flash can look unkind and unnatural principally for indoor portraits. There are various ways you can take an image indoors without resorting to flash. Push the ISO up – usually ISO 800 to 1600 will make a big difference for the shutter speed you can choose. Use the widest aperture possible – this way more light will reach the sensor and you will have a nice blurred background. 7. If you want to capture a subject in motion, then use the panning technique. Choose a shutter speed around two steps lower than. Keep your camera on the
subject with your finger half way down on the shutter to lock the focus and when ready take picture and remembering to follow them as they move. 8. Don’t be scared to play with the shutter speed to create some interesting effects. When taking a night time shot, try shooting with the shutter speed set at 4 seconds. You will see that the movement of the object is captured along with some light trails.
MOVIE REVIEW
ARE YOU LISTENING ! Tanvir Sany
For the very first time in the history of Bangladeshi film, a documentary film got release in a commercial hall and that is ‘Shunte Ki Pao!’ or ‘Are You Listening!’ , Directed by Kamar Ahmad Saimon & Produced Sara Afrin. The film is still running successfully on his 2nd week of releasing. The film is about the people by the coastal belts of Bangladesh, in a small village named ‘Sutarkhali’ next to the mangrove forests of Sundarbans , RAKHI (27) lives with her man SOUMEN (32) and their son RAHUL (6). Fighting against all the odds of the woods, along with around 100 families, they cultivate the land for generations. On May 25, 2009 when RAHUL is only 4 years old, a tidal surge named ‘Aila’, hits the coastal belts of Bangladesh. For RAKHI, SOUMEN and RAHUL life is not the same anymore. 'Are You Listening!' is about RAKHI’s hope to ensure a dignified future for her son RAHUL. It's about her jobless husband SOUMEN's frustration for failing to provide for his family and about a community’s struggle to get back the land they have lost! Seasons change topography, even relations, yet after the rain, they go out with spades and shovels to reclaim the life again! How RAKHI, SOUMEN and RAHUL managed that? What was the crisis found out during this struggling time? If you want to know the answer you have to watch the film. ‘A visual symphony and an ode to life’ International Jury awarding rand Prix in 35th Cinéma du Réel, Paris A classic humanistic, cinematically brilliant work…brings back memories of the Apu-trilogy of Satyajit Ray’ Tue Steen Müller, First Director of European Documentary Network

The 25th International Documentary Festival of Amsterdam (IDFA) introduced the film as, ‘A gorgeously shot observational documentary…filming from an unusually low camera angle…’
Upper comments symbolised the film’s action what they got in it. Receiving praise from both local and international critics as a creative documentary, Kamar Ahmad Simon and Sara Afreen are more comfortable calling it just a 'film of tiger heart’. Because it shows the mentality of Bangladeshi people how we fight back on the bad luck. Last but not the least wanna ask you a question,’ ARE YOU REALLY LISTENING!’ with Kamar & Sara? Let us know when you are done with the film “Shunte Ki Pao!”.

DEVELOPING BANGLADESH
EDUCATION AND HEALTH
Zahidul Karim Bangladesh has dysfunctional politics and a stunted private sector. Yet it has been surprisingly good at improving the lives of its poor (Source: The Economist) On the outskirts of the village of Shibaloy, just past the brick factory, the car slows to let a cow lumber out of its way. It is a good sign. Twenty years ago there was no brick factory, or any other industry, in this village 60 kilometers west of Dhaka; there were few cows, and no cars. The road was a raised path too
narrow for anything except bicycles. Now, Shibaloy has just opened its first primary school; it is installing piped water and the young men of the village gather to show off their motorcycles at the tea house. “I have been a microcredit customer for 17 years,” says Romeja, the matriarch of an extended family. “When I started, my house was broken; I slept on the streets. Now I have three cows, an acre of land, solar panels on the roof and 75,000 taka ($920) in fixed-rate deposits.”
Bangladesh has also made huge gains in education and health. More than 90% of girls enrolled in primary school in 2005, slightly more than boys. That was twice the female enrolment rate in 2000. Infant mortality has more than halved, from 97 deaths per thousand live births in 1990 to 37 per thousand in 2010 (see table). Over the same period child mortality fell by two-thirds and maternal mortality fell by threequarters. It now stands at 194 deaths per 100,000 births. In 1990 women could expect to live a year less than men;
BANGLADESH AGRICULTURE The villages have also found resources from beyond agriculture—and, indeed, beyond Bangladesh. Around 6m Bangladeshis work abroad, mostly in the Middle East, and they remit a larger share of the national income than any other big country gets from migrants. In the year ending in June 2012 they sent back $13 billion, about 14% of annual income—more than all the government’s socialprotection programmes put together.

BANGLADESH GARMENT INDUSTRY
ONE OF BIG MARKET IN OUR COUNTRY Bangladesh was the original development “basket case”, the demeaning ¬term used in Henry Kissinger’s state department for countries that would always depend on aid. Its people are crammed onto a flood plain swept by cyclones and without big mineral and other natural resources. It suffered famines in 1943 and 1974 and military coups in 1975, 1982 and 2007. When it split from Pakistan in 1971 many observers doubted that it could survive as an independent state. In some ways, those who doubted Bangladesh’s potential were right. Economic growth since the 1970s has been poor; the country’s politics have been unremittingly wretched. Yet over the past 20 years, Bangladesh has made some of the biggest gains in the basic condition of people’s lives ever seen anywhere. Between 1990 and 2010 life expectancy rose by 10 years, from 59 to 69 (see chart 1). Bangladeshis now have a life expectancy four years longer than

Indians, despite the Indians being, on average, twice as rich. Even more remarkably, the improvement in life expectancy has been as great among the poor as the rich. Bangladesh has also made huge gains in education and health. More than 90% of girls enrolled in primary school in 2005, slightly more than boys. That was twice the female enrolment rate in 2000. Infant mortality has more than halved, from 97 deaths per thousand live births in 1990 to 37 per thousand in 2010 (see table). Over the same period child mortality fell by two-thirds and maternal mortality fell by three-quarters. It now stands at 194 deaths per 100,000 births. In 1990 women could expect to live a year less than men; now they can expect to live two years more. The most dramatic period of improvement in human health in history is often taken to be that of late-19th-century Japan, during the remarkable modernization of the Meiji transition. Bangladesh’s record on child and maternal mortality has been comparable in scale. These improvements are not a simple result of increases in people’s income.
Bangladesh remains a poor country, with a GDP per head of $1,900 at purchasing-power parity. For the first decades of its independent history Bangladesh’s economy grew by a paltry 2% a year. Since 1990 its GDP has been rising at a more respectable 5% a year, in real terms. That has helped reduce the percentage of people below the poverty line from 49% in 2000 to 32% in 2010. Still, Bangladeshi growth has been slower than India’s, which for most of the past 20 years grew at around 8% a year. Nevertheless the gains in its development have been greater. The belief that growth brings development with it—the “Washington consensus”—is often criticized on the basis that some countries have had good growth but little poverty reduction. Bangladesh embodies the inverse of that: it has had disproportionate poverty reduction for its amount of growth.
Four main factors explain this surprising success. First, family planning has empowered women. If you leave aside city states, Bangladesh is the world’s most densely populated country. At independence, its leaders decided that they had to restrain further population growth (China’s one-child policy and India’s forced sterilization both date from roughly the same time). Fortunately, Bangladesh’s new government lacked the power to be coercive. Instead, birth control was made free and government workers and volunteers fanned out across the country to distribute pills and advice. In 1975, 8% of women of child-bearing age were using contraception (or had partners who were); in 2010 the number was over 60% . In 1975 the total fertility rate (the average number of children a woman can expect to have during her lifetime) was 6.3. In 1993 it was 3.4. After stalling, it resumed its fall in 2000. After one of the steepest declines in history the fertility rate is now just 2.3, slightly above the “replacement level” at which the population stabilizes in the long term. When Bangladesh and Pakistan split in 1971, they each had a population of 65m or so. Bangladesh’s is now around 150m; Pakistan’s is almost 180m. Because of this Bangladesh is about to reap a “demographic dividend”; the number of people entering adulthood will handsomely exceed the number of children being born, increasing the share of the total population that works. In giving women better health and more autonomy, family planning was one of a number of factors that improved their lot, and by so doing did much to reduce poverty. The spread of primary education was one of the others (the government has been better than many at helping women this way); the proportion of girls who get schooled has increased much more than the proportion of boys. And both the boom in the textile industry and the arrival of microcredit have, over the past 20 years, put money into women’s pockets—from which it is more likely to be spent on health, education and better food. Second, Bangladesh managed to restrain the fall in rural household incomes that usually increases
extreme poverty in developing countries. Between 1971 and 2010 the rice harvest more than trebled, though the area under cultivation increased by less than 10%. This year the country once supposedly doomed to dependence on food aid could be a small exporter of rice. One-sixth of the population remains undernourished, which is blight; but it is an improvement on 20 years ago, when more than a third of the population was underweight or stunted. Yield alone is not the whole story. The new crops of the Green Revolution allowed rice growers to move to two harvests a year. The rice of the Ganges delta used to be monsoon, or aman, rice; it was planted before the annual rains and harvested after. Now boro rice, planted and harvested in winter, is the main crop. For people just above the poverty line, the sort of event most likely to plunge them into extreme poverty is a sudden external shock, such as an illness or a harvest failure. By expanding the winter crop, boro rice reduces the risk of a harvest failing in a way that shocks a household into abject poverty. Between 2007 and 2012 Bangladesh went through three global food-price spikes and two cyclones. Almost everyone expected a spike in poverty to follow. It did not. The villages have also found resources from beyond agriculture—and, indeed, beyond Bangladesh. Around 6m Bangladeshis work abroad, mostly in the Middle East, and they remit a larger share of the national income than any other big country gets from migrants. In the year ending in June 2012 they sent back $13 billion, about 14% of annual income—more than all the government’s social-protection programmes put together. The majority of migrant workers send their remittances back to family members in the village they came from. Because emigrants are more likely to come from better off families, those families benefit most. But knock-on effects on rural wages benefit landless laborers. The World Bank calculates that between 2000 and 2010, real agricultural wages rose 59%, compared with 42% for all sectors. Most countries have seen a reduction in rural living standards,
and a resultant increase in extreme poverty. Bangladesh has not. Remittances and family planning have not attacked extreme poverty directly. That is where the government comes in. Bangladesh comes 120th (out of 183) on the “corruption perceptions index” kept by Transparency International, a think-tank in Berlin. It has had episodes of military rule interrupting periods of democracy in which the “battling begums” (daughter and widow of two early presidents) engaged in a sort of Judy and Judy show of vicious political infighting. Yet despite the political circus, the country’s elite has maintained a consensus in favour of social programmes. Bangladesh spends a little more than most low-income countries on helping the poor. About 12% of public spending (1.8% of GDP) goes on social safety-nets to protect the poorest: food for work, cash transfers and direct feeding programmes, which most poor countries do not have. As well as spending more on the poor, the state also focuses more than many on the role of women. That said, the amounts that go on education (2.2% of GDP) and health (3.5%) in Bangladesh are below the average for low-income countries. And even that spending might well have been wasted but for one further influence: the extraordinary role played by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the country. Without the state’s schools, clinics and cash-transfer schemes, says Rehman Sobhan, the head of the Centre for Policy Dialogue, a think-tank, other interventions would not work. It is the things which NGOs do, though, that make Bangladesh’s way of fighting poverty unique. BRAC (which originally stood for Bangladesh Rehabilitation Assistance Committee, but now is the only name the organization needs) implemented the idea of microcredit inverted by Dr. Muhammad Yunus, that is, tiny loans to the destitute. Then another NGO, Grameen Bank, made them work by targeting them on women and holding weekly meetings of borrowers who would identify and support anyone who was falling behind on repayments.
107 PAGES
DEVELOPING BANGLADESH Their growth since has been explosive. Grameen has 8.4m borrowers and outstanding loans of over $1 billion; BRAC has 5m borrowers and loans of $725m. The poor account for roughly a fifth of the total loan portfolio of the country, an unusually high proportion. Since their establishment, microcredits have spread around the world. Their benefits have been both exaggerated and attacked. The backlash has shown that microcredits have not, as some claimed, led to a surge of entrepreneurial activity. In some cases they have left borrowers worse off than before. Their impact in the land of their birth, though, has been mostly positive. Mohammad Razzaque of Dhaka University looked at two groups of people with similar incomes and household assets, one of which contained regular borrowers from a variety of microfinance institutions and the other of which did not, to see whether microcredit helped. Among the first group the poverty rate fell ten percentage points, from 78% in 1998 to 68% in 2004. Among the second, poverty still fell, but only half as much, from 75% to 70%. The magic ingredient The real magic of Bangladesh, though, was not microfinance but BRAC—and NGOs more generally. The government of Bangladesh has been unusually friendly to NGOs, perhaps because, to begin with, it realised it needed all the help it could get. BRAC began life distributing emergency aid in a corner of eastern Bangladesh after the war of independence. It is now the largest NGO in the world by the number of employees and the number of people it has helped (three-quarters of all Bangladeshis have benefited in one way or another). Unlike Grameen, which is mainly a microfinance and savings operation, BRAC does practically everything. In the 1980s it sent out volunteers to every household in the country showing mothers how to mix salt, sugar and water in the right proportions to rehydrate a child suffering from diarrhea. This probably did more to lower child mortality in the country than anything else. BRAC and the government jointly ran a huge programme to inoculate every
Bangladeshi against tuberculosis. BRAC’s primary schools are a safety net for children who drop out of state schools. BRAC even has the world’s largest legal-aid programme: there are more BRAC legal centers than police stations in Bangladesh. The scale is a response to one of the biggest challenges of development: that solving one problem leads to others. This happens in economic development as well as the social kind. In the 1950s South Korea’s Samsung had a big woolen mill. It found that to expand, it had to make its own textile machinery; then, to export, it built its own ships; and so on. Samsung now has around 80 companies and is the world’s largest information-technology firm. BRAC is a sort of chaebol (South Korean conglomerate)for social development. It began with microcredit, but found its poor clients could not sell the milk and eggs produced by the animals they had bought. So BRAC got into food processing. When it found the most destitute were too poor for micro-loans, it set up a programme which gave them animals. Now it runs dairies, a packaging business, a hybrid-seed producer, textile plants and its own shops—as well as schools for dropouts, clinics and sanitation plants. The innovative NGO now has 100,000 health volunteers with mobile phones (mobile-phone coverage is widespread in Bangladesh). When a volunteer finds a woman is pregnant, she texts the mother-to-be with advice on prenatal and, later, postnatal care. This is helping BRAC build up a database of maternal and child-health patterns in remote villages. BRAC goes out of its way to involve everyone. When it set up a programme for the ultra-poor in Shibaloy, the whole village gathered to decide who should be eligible. They drew a map of the households in the dirt so everyone could see who was involved and ensure that nobody was missed (the same process, in a different village, is pictured below). BRAC argues that such things encourage a sense of ownership of the programmes and reduces waste and corruption. A balance-sheet Bangladesh still
has
problems. Its nutritional standards are low and stalled for a few years in the early 2000s. While the government has managed to increase school enrolment, the quality of education is abysmal and the drop-out rate exceptionally high (only 60% of pupils complete primary school, much less than the regional average). Only a quarter of eleven-year-olds have reached the required standards of literacy and numeracy. Most of the big improvements have taken place in rural areas, but Bangladesh is urbanizing fast, which will bring a different suite of problems. Dhaka is one of the ten largest cities in the world, but has the infrastructure of a one-buffalo town. Villagers are doing it for themselves And as if all that were not enough, the government seems intent on killing one of the geese that lays the golden eggs. Incensed that the founder of Grameen Bank, Muhammad Yunus, should have had the temerity to start a political party, the prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, has hounded him from his position as the bank’s managing director and is seeking to impose her own choice of boss on the bank, overriding the interests of the owner-borrowers. This is sending a chilling signal to other NGOs. But Bangladesh’s record is, on balance, a good one. It shows that the benefits of making women central to development are huge. It suggests that migration is not just the result of a failure to provide jobs at home but can be an engine of economic growth. Indian’s rural-development minister, Jairam Ramesh, said recently that “Bangladesh’s experience shows…that we don’t have to wait for…high economic growth to trigger social transformations. Robust grass-roots institutions can achieve much that money can’t buy.” Bangladesh is still poor and crowded. With the lowest labor costs in the world (textile workers make about $35 a month) it should be growing faster than China, not more slowly than India. It is badly governed, stifled by red tape and faces severe environmental problems. But in terms of the success of its grass-roots development, it has lessons for the world.

DESTINY
It’s not a bad idea to view spring as your personal-biological clock. Before the alarm sounds, you are sound asleep. ARIES
Up until March 21, it’s Pisces’ hour of dominion on the cosmic clock; and this sign of dreams happens to govern your own. Pisces represents your 12th house, the zone that holds sway over all that’s unconscious. Would you drive a car or start a business from the sleep state? Not likely. However, this zone can be mined for inner guidance. That means the weeks prior to your birthday signify a strategic time for doing prep work or research. Once the sun returns to your sign on March 21, you naturally tap into an annual process that renews your body, mind, and spirit. Scientists explain that we use less than 10% of our brains. Like old computer files, fascinating data can be discovered by probing the contents of the inner self. This “mining operation” yields its most powerful results from March 12-14. Mercury lags behind in foggy Pisces. Avoid major decisions on March 22-23 when Mercury, planet of plans and ideas merges with Neptune, the bearer of confusion. When the sun enters your sign, an ambush is waiting. Rebel star Uranus crossing your sign falls into a crossfire with Pluto, the planet of power struggles. Although this cosmic traffic conflagration peaks in early April, you may sense the effects by the end of March. That’s when love and money star Venus meets a wall in the form of Saturn, lord of karma (on the 30th-31st). Your desires may be obstructed by conditions or someone else’s opposition. The ensuing fireworks spill over into April.
W
orking with others is vital now, so it’s important to align your interests with those who share common intentions, goals, and aspirations. The sun’s annual visit to Pisces triggers the power inherent to your 11th house. Call it synergy: it’s a positive force unleashed when two or more persons share an objective and make efforts to bring it to fruition. Something mystical supports these types of endeavors. In other words, magic can happen, and planetary alignments help that prospect along on March 12-14. Even if you think of yourself as more of a pragmatist than a dreamer, pay attention to the messages relayed by your intuition. Pisces is a highly imaginative sign and with messenger Mercury headed there on the 18th, ideas of a highly creative nature inspire your thought process. You could get a bit swept out to sea with unrealistic plans, goals, projects or intentions when Mercury merges forces with Neptune on the 22nd-23rd. Meanwhile, the sun (great solar battery that it is) enters your reclusive 12th house, Aries, on the 21st to signal your most strategic time for rest, reflection, and renewal. Ruler Venus takes a hard hit from Saturn during the last days of the month. Delay or disappointment may tie into a matter that pertains to love or your monetary flow.

ith Pisces, the fish, governing your chart’s key professional sector, you advance in your career by doing at least two jobs at once. Now, as the sun excites your 10th house (career sector) you’ll be extremely busy meeting tasks that would ideally involve two or more employees. You can strategically showcase your talents, efficiency, and capacity for innovation on March 12-14. Those days allow you to advance your interests on the job. Ruler Mercury enters Pisces on the 18th to merge with Neptune (the ruler of that sign) on the 22nd-23rd. While this connection is good for cartoonists, film animators, and trance mediums, it’s dangerous for anything practical, mundane, or reliant upon specific details. Best not to make any binding commitments (or plans) those days. Mars infuses your romance sector with lots of passion. From the balance sign of Libra, Mars compels you to learn what it means to be a partner, and work with another to fulfill shared objectives. March sets up a juggling act in prompting you to both balance tasks and balance your interests within the context of a close relationship. The sun advances to Aries on the 21st to light up your social sector. Nonetheless, love star Venus takes a hit from Saturn on the 30th-31st . Don’t count your monetary chickens before they hatch. It’s wise to curb the tendency to criticize the person you love, as Aries time ignites short fuses and people feel their tempers shorten. You could inadvertently send the person you care about towards the nearest door.
W
ater signs like yours are inherently mediumistic. You “pick up” on cues from your environment. Many Cancers take on the mood of the persons they associate with. During March, the sun crosses Pisces, the most psychic sign on the dial. This highly intuitive sign governs your chart sector of higher understanding (the 9th house); so it’s likely that your supersensible sensibilities will intensify. On the plus side, intuition could guide you to the answer to a problem that’s plagued you for some time. Guidance may barrel your way from a book, film, counselor, chance meeting, or your own gut reaction… especially on March 12-14. Messenger Mercury enters Pisces’ watery realm on the 18th and there merges the language of soul with that of the more earthbound intellect. Translation? You can see and understand things you never quite realized before. This bout of enlightenment can shift the ways you interact with others. And that could be a good thing. On March 22nd-23rd it will be difficult to discern the real from the fantastical because deceptive tendencies run high. Stay away from long-term plans or binding contracts at that time. The sun enters Aries on the 21st to stimulate your chart’s most ambitious sector. Make your work stand out on the job by doing your best to shine. Love & money star Venus gets into a fix on the 30th-31st. Guard your wallet and don’t make expenses you really can’t afford.

ew cats enjoy being submerged in water, and fiery Leo, the big cat is no exception. That’s why each March when the sun, your ruling planet, passes through Pisces’ virtual sea kingdom, you tend to feel out of your element. When the force is not riding with you, it’s foolish to take on projects you just don’t have the zeal to complete. Pisces governs your 8th house: the zone where healing and transformation happen. These soul gifts arrive when one gives up old resentments and cleanses their psyche through the practice of forgiveness. If you can do that, something magical may occur close to March 12-14. The 8th house also defines the way we share money (as well as our very selves) with others; sexual intimacy included. Your ego could significantly melt down into another at this time, so make sure this other is worthy of you. Mercury’s power of discernment is muted when it merges with dualistic Neptune on March 22-23. Your inner compass is too foggy for sound navigation; plus you can delude yourself into thinking what you wish were true indeed is… rather than seeing things for what they are. When the sun enters Aries on the 21st, clarity emerges little by little, and you begin to see things more clearly. Unfortunately, Venus clashes with Saturn, the planet of heavy gravity, on March 30-31 when a prized fantasy could fall to earth with a thud.

he sun’s annual visit to Pisces heats up your relationship sector. Pisces governs your house of partnership, and following the theme of the two fish, it sets duality and possible confusion into motion. Don’t be surprised if you feel divided about someone or something. Your greatest clarity emerges on March 12-14. Planets then align to provide you with deep insights, ones useful to understanding your closest ties. Human beings have a tendency to project what they think is right onto others. Your lesson is to accept others on their terms. Consider it a test in stretching tolerance. Ruler Mercury enters Pisces on the 18th liberating rigid beliefs from their former concreteness. You may even feel disoriented, especially on the 22nd-23rd. Those are powerful days for gaining personal insights, but not especially recommended for forming binding agreements. The sun’s entrance into Aries on the 21st energizes your 8th house of joint finance. You may find occasion to wheel and deal in an effort to arrive at a financial arrangement that pleases all (the) parties involved. In spite of your Herculean effort to play King Solomon (through demonstrating absolute fairness), Venus, the planetary arbiter of love and money matters, conflicts with Saturn on the 30th-31st. A karmic matter from the past could now boomerang and bring with it, a lesson you thought was already resolved, as in “case closed.”

he holistic health community recognizes that our emotional issues affect our body’s tissues. The sensitive sign of Pisces governs your 6th house health sector. The two fish portray the relationship that exists between mind and body (or body and emotions). With this sector now spotlighted, pay attention to your body’s signals since prevention—in the form of catching a problem early-- is worth pounds of cure. Be especially alert to any messages that stir on March 12-14. These days may prove significant to your work, too. Powerful planets align to send support towards your job sector. With Mars spending extra time in your sign, you’ve developed the capacity to do more on your own. While the sign of partnership (yours) prefers to rely on a significant other to satisfy tasks, the cosmos is facilitating greater independence on your part. Messenger Mercury enters Pisces on the 18th to join forces with Neptune on the 22nd-23rd. This dreamy influence could see you lose your focus (on those days). Watch what you eat and drink since you could react strongly to anything that insults your system/normal physiology. The sun enters Aries on the 21st to stimulate your partnership sector. If you’re solo, spring should prove your most strategic season for attracting new love. However, ruler Venus hits a symbolic wall on the 30th-31st. Romance could disappoint those days. Allow others room to be human, and to thereby make mistakes.
Cosmic chemistry is real, powerful, and sometimes overwhelming. When planets pass through your elementwater-they empower you at the deepest levels. The sun’s annual visit to Pisces stirs a most inspired chart sector, your 5th house. This is where the artist within comes to life. You can express yourself with great creativity, even zeal. The 5th house also compels you to connect with children more profoundly than would typically be the case. Plus it serves as the Zodiac’s kingdom of the heart. That means March is the month to stimulate your ardor and deepen intimacy within romantic ties. You could learn something vital about a loved one on March 12-14—true power days, or recognize the essence of the bond (or connection). When messenger Mercury unites with nebulous Neptune, you’re able to read the language of the soul. What’s revealed pertains to the realm of the spirit, not the mundane. So avoid business or financial commitments on March 22-23. The sun advances onto Aries on the 21st to energize your 6th house of work and health matters. You should feel a new surge of vitality, or summon the focus to begin a challenging, if evocative work project. Venus throws a monkey-wrench into plans on the 30th. Everyone is not on the same page. Let conflict pass quickly. Don’t add fuel to the flame.

In the long run, this disruption could trigger an opportunity where you least expect it.

You’ll feel called upon to tie up a multi-faceted/complex project close to Virgo’s full moon on the 16th. If you’re a perfectionist, you’ll need to practice tolerance or your critical acumen could offend someone who’d better serve you as an ally. Mercury, the Zodiac’s mercantilist and dealmaker enters the imaginative, albeit nebulous sign of Pisces on the 18th. It merges with Neptune, the planet of illusion, on March 21-23 when it’s best to carefully review projects or any contracts timed to this anything but pragmatic “hour.” Exceptionally keen insights head your way on March 12-14, so pay attention to what you learn or recognize on those dates. Once the sun enters Aries on the 21st, it sheds light on the state of your domestic life. You may want to move furniture around, shift the ambiance of your home, or devise better ways to get an intransigent relatives to “go along with the program.” Capricorn seldom gives up until they reach the mountain summit; however, that doesn’t mean you won’t have to revise plans or assume a different approach when your ruling planet Saturn tangos with Venus on the 30th-31st. Diplomacy can defuse conflicts; yet it may be in rather short supply at that time.

oney will be much on your mind since the sun energizes your chart’s income sector until March 21. Put your unorthodox genius to work by cultivating novel ways to increase the flow of currency; or you can discover a strategic way to invest it. Your best dates for wise, long-term maneuvers (planning for your future) are March 12-14. Virgo’s full moon on the 16th brings the imposition of discipline. Either you internalize it, or someone else makes efforts that AQUARIUS force you to toe the line. If you’ve been avoiding or evading certain responsibilities, you may need to “own up.” Venus enters your sign on the 7th and she helps you to magnetize what you desire (and draw it closer). Mercury sharpens your thought process while in your sign until it enters the more diffusive realm of Pisces on the 18th. The winged messenger joins forces with murky Neptune, on the 21st-23rd. You’re not usually seduced by con artists or anyone intending to sell you a dream (that lacks foundation). Still, it’s still wise to guard against deception on those dates. The sun advances to Aries (on the 21st) where it clarifies your focus. News may emerge on the 30th that contains shocking content. March’s second new moon plugs directly into your ruling planet, Uranus. An unprecedented discovery has your name written all over it.

irthday time means the sun comes “home” where--like a great solar battery--it’s positioned to recharge you in body, mind and spirit. March naturally serves as your power month; and this March begins with a new moon in your sign. March 1 presents an excellent time for you to take inventory, that is, an overview of your life. You’re seldom more aligned with cosmos—or yourself. Messenger Mercury enters Pisces on the 18th to enliven your thought process with endless streams of new ideas. In fact, your imagination works overtime when Mercury merges with your sign’s ruling planet Neptune on March 21-23. What you gain in the way of visionary insight you forfeit in the way of practicality or any sense of the pragmatic. So don’t commit to mundane agreements at that time. Virgo’s full moon on the 16th can agitate close relationships. Tolerance for differences runs in short supply. Besides, your partner is apt to make insensitive demands on your time and energy. Turn critiques (or lines of criticism) around through humor, if you can. The sun advances to Aries on the 21st where it energizes your moneymaking sector. Unfortunately, Venus, star of banking as well as romance hits a symbolic wall. Karmic heavyweight Saturn puts a hold on plans close to the 30th. In fact, a second new moon occurs just then, in Aries to merge forces with Uranus, the planet of unexpected developments. Upsets operate as Providence’s way of re-routing you. In other words, Plan A is not always the best one. Plan according.
