COVER STORY This is summer,

do you have any doubt? Obviously not, if not then why there is rain? There may be a bit rain in summer but not as like the rain of rainy season. But we are having the so. Coz we are in the era of buy one get one free. We are getting the combo, as we like to have the so. Like way, we are experiencing the rainy season in the time of summer. So this season is not merely representing summer, it does also represent the rainy season. So it’s better to term this combo as Summer Rain. We count six seasons in Bangladesh. Summer is one of them. It is the hot season. It rules over May and June. The earth moves round the sun. The part of it, which comes nearer the sun, gets the summer season, because here the sun's rays are straight and direct. In summer, everything is neat and clean. The earth is dry. Hence, there is no mud or marsh. Ways and paths are open to very place. Mangoes ripe in the summer. We get plenty of mangoes. We get jack-fruits and pineapples. The shady groves of mango and palm trees are cool and beautiful. The cuckoo has not yet ceased to sing her music. The grass-hoppers make their merry dance on the cool blades of grass. In Summer, the days are long. Hence we get more times to work. Even in summer comes last. So, the schoolchildren got more times to play. The Summer flowers bloom in the evening. All the night they speared their sweet smell. The summer sky is clear and blue. Hence, the moon beams bright. Summer causes the rainy seasons. Because it evaporated water and stores the vapors in the atmosphere. These vapors turn into clouds and fall as rain. At mid-day in summer, people suffer from a terrible heat. The weak and the old man die of sun-strokes. People feel tired and thirsty. Their bodies perspire. Sweat comes out and flows down their bodies. They feel restless. Summerboils trouble the children. Water tanks and wells go dry; so also river and canals. People do not get water to drink. Dogs pant with their tongues flowing. Trees go bald and creepers fade away. grasses dry off. So, cows do not get the pasture. All suffer from scarcity of water. Mid-day is very hot. The dumb cattle lie in groves. The silent birds hide in their nests. They weary travelers are parched by the scorching rays of the sun. They rest under the wayside trees. Summer is the first in order of the

COVER STORY seasons. It gives rise to four months of rain. Hence, we cannot blame it. Let us pay our due homage to summer. The summer season is upon us and it's time to think about preventing dehydration and heat-related illness. Did you know that more people die every year of heat-related illnesses, The sad fact is that most of these deaths are preventable -- if the victims understood the realities of dehydration and heat-related illness more clearly.

heat stroke -- and in severe cases, death. Millions of Americans are at risk for heat-related illnesses; however, the risk is significantly increased for 4 groups of our population. Those most at risk include: When summer vacation from school arrives, most children spend a great deal of time outdoors being active. Because children have a larger surface area in relation to body mass, they often gain heat faster than adults when the outside air temperature is higher

Regular exercise, often done outdoors, is just as important during the hot months of summer as it is during the cooler seasons. Unfortunately outdoor activities often place people at serious risk of dehydration which can lead to other heat-related illnesses including -- heat exhaustion --

than body temperature. People who spend hours training and competing in the hot summer sun often do not have an adequate intake of fluids to make up for the loss of fluids caused by their activities. Workers such as landscapers, construction crews, police officers, postal employees, and others who spend most of their days in the heat often have little time for bathroom breaks or for drinking fluids, as a result these workers may not consume enough fluids during their workdays. There is a fine line between how heat affects most adults and how is can affect the elderly in a more profound way. It's is extremely important for senior citizens to practice a gradual acclimatization to heat that puts emphasis on hydration. On the other hand the rainy season,

monsoon season or wet season is the time of year when most of a region's average annual rainfall occurs. It usually lasts one or more months. The term "green season" is also sometimes used as a euphemism by tourist authorities. Areas with wet seasons are dispersed across portions of the tropics and subtropics. Under the KÜppen climate classification, for tropical climates, a wet season month is defined as a month where average precipitation is 60 millimeters (2.4 in) or more.[4] In contrast to areas with savanna climates and monsoon regimes, Mediterranean climates have wet winters and dry summers. Tropical rainforests technically do not have dry or wet seasons, since their rainfall is equally distributed throughout the year. Some areas with pronounced rainy seasons will see a break in rainfall mid-season, when the intertropical convergence zone or monsoon trough moves pole ward of their location during the middle of the warm season. When the wet season occurs during a warm season, or summer, precipitation falls mainly during the late afternoon and early evening hours. The wet season is a time when air quality improves, freshwater quality improves, and vegetation grows substantially, leading to crop yields late in the season. Floods cause rivers to overflow their banks, and some animals to retreat to higher ground. Soil nutrients diminish and erosion increases. The incidence of malaria increases in areas where the rainy season coincides with high temperatures. Animals have adaptation and survival strategies for the wetter regime. Often, the previous dry season leads to food shortages in the wet season, as the crops have yet to mature. We wish every day could be a sunny one. Unfortunately, this is not the case. When we look outside our window on a hot summer day and see rain falling, we are at a loss for what to wear. Most of us may hate to cover up our entire outfit with a rain jacket, but we don’t want to get wet either.

COVER STORY Fashion-4 This outfit is perfect for a day when you’re not absolutely sure it’s going to rain. A weather report that calls for scattered thunderstorms or a chance of rain poses a problem. I hate wearing rain boots if it doesn’t rain, so I choose shoes that have a closed toe and are made from anything but cloth or real leather. I usually stick with faux-leather patent flats. (Don’t forget to slip an umbrella into your bag, just in case. Some ways to enjoy the rainy season Rainy season is the most romantic and fun loving season. There are a variety of ways to enjoy this season. You can enjoy this season either with your friends or with your partner. This rainy season if you do not have much work to do then you can plan to enjoy this season. These are the ways to enjoy rainy season.

During the summer, the last thing you want to do is pile layer upon layer to keep yourself dry. So I have compiled a few rainy-day outfit ideas for inspiration and guidance. Fashion-1 One of your favorite things may be to do for rainy-day style is add a pop of color. You may wear a monochromatic outfit and then add bold fuchsia or red lipstick. High-waist shorts and a crop top will keep you cool, while rain boots and an umbrella keep you dry! Fashion-2 This look was designed without an umbrella in mind, because sometimes carrying around a bulky umbrella is not ideal for your plans. If the day is a little cooler (or you just want to keep your legs dry), you might opt for a pair of jeans. A basic white tee will prevent you from overheating and provides the perfect base for a statement necklace and a colorful raincoat. Slip on your rain boots and complete the look with a bold watch. Fashion-3 Don’t forget that your umbrella can act as an accessory! Choose one with a cute pattern or a bright color to accentuate your outfit. This black skater dress and denim vest go perfectly with a pair of red rain boots and a gold belt.

NATURES WONDER Watermelon

(Citrullus lanatus) is a vine-like (scrambler and trailer) flowering plant originally from southern Africa. Its fruit is a special kind referred to by botanists as a pepo, a berry which has a thick rind (exocarp) and fleshy center (mesocarp and endocarp). The more than 1200 varieties of watermelon range in weight from less than one to more than 200 pounds; the flesh can be red, orange, yellow or white. The 'Yellow Crimson' has a yellow-colored flesh. It has been described as sweeter and more honey-flavored than the more popular red-flesh watermelon. The 'Orangeglo' has a very sweet orange flesh, and is a large, oblong fruit weighing 9–14 kg. It has a light green rind with jagged dark green stripes.

HISTORY Watermelon is thought to have originated in southern Africa, where it is found growing wild. Top five watermelon producers are China, Turkey, Iran, Brazil and Egypt. It reaches maximum genetic diversity there, with sweet, bland and bitter forms. In the 19th century, Alphonse de Candolle claimed the watermelon was indigenous to tropical Africa. Though Citrullus colocynthis is often considered to be a wild ancestor of watermelon and is now found native in north and west Africa, it has been suggested on the basis of chloroplast DNA investigations that the cultivated and wild watermelon diverged independently from a common ancestor, possibly C. ecirrhosus from Namibia. Evidence of its cultivation in the Nile Valley was found from the second millennium BC. Watermelon seeds have been found at Twelfth Dynasty sites and in the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamen. Watermelon is also mentioned in the Bible as a food eaten by the ancient Israelites while they were in bondage in Egypt. By the 10th century, watermelons were being cultivated in China, which is today the world's single largest watermelon producer. By the 13th century, Moorish invaders had introduced the fruit to Europe; according to John Mariani's Dictionary of American Food and Drink, "watermelon" made its first appearance in an English dictionary in 1615. In Japan, farmers of the Zentsuji region found a way to grow cubic watermelons, by growing the fruits in glass boxes and letting them naturally assume the shape of the receptacle. The cubic shape was originally designed to make the melons easier to stack and store, but the cubic

watermelons are often more than double the price of normal ones, and much of their appeal to consumers is in their novelty. Pyramid-shaped watermelons have also been developed and any polyhedral shape may potentially also be used.

FOOD VALUE Nutritional value of raw watermelon is as follows: Carbohydrates 7.55%, Sugars 6.2%, Dietary fiber 0.4%, Fat 0.15%, Protein 0.61% and the rest 91.45% is Water. Vitamin supplements per 100 g of watermelon are consisting of 28 µg of vit. A, 303 µg beta-carotene, 0.033 mg Thiamine (vit. B1), 0.021 mg Riboflavin (vit. B2), 0.178 mg Niacin (vit. B3), 0.221 mg Pantothenic acid (B5), 0.045 mg Vitamin B6, 4.1 mg Choline, 8.1 mg Vitamin C, 7 mg Calcium (1%), 0.24 mg Iron, 10 mg Magnesium, 0.038 mg Manganese, 11 mg Phosphorus, 112 mg Potassium, 1 mg Sodium, 0.1 mg Zinc and 4532 µg of Lycopene (USDA Database). Watermelon rinds, usually a light green or white color, are also edible and contain many hidden nutrients, but most people avoid eating them due to their unappealing flavor.

VIBRANT RECIPES 1. Melonade: A pitcher of sweet,

refreshing watermelon juice can be a good start to keep you hydrated in a very hot day. Watermelon juice couldn’t be easier to extract. You don’t need a fancy schmancy juicer, just a blender. Assuming your watermelon isn't seedless, slice the melon into smaller strips and use a small spoon to scoop out the seeds. Discard the seeds, and scoop chunks of watermelon from the rind into the blender. If the watermelon is seedless, use a big spoon to scoop chunks of watermelon flesh into the blender. Blend the watermelon until it is totally pulverized. This shouldn't take more than a minute. Squeeze the juice of one small lime into the blender and blend for a few seconds. Pour the watermelon juice into a pitcher or pour directly into glasses over ice.

Unbelievably, arginine (an essential amino acid) makes watermelon a wonderful natural cure for impotence. It naturally relaxes blood vessels. This includes, of course the blood vessels in the male reproductive system. Relaxed muscles allow for a more natural erection response. Relaxed blood vessels mean a lower blood pressure. The arginine in watermelon that relaxes blood vessels has other health benefits. It promotes production of nitric oxide. In addition to relaxing blood vessels, this compound has been shown to reduce blood clotting and encourage smooth blood flow, preventing heart attacks and strokes. Like most fruits and vegetables, watermelon is loaded with cancer fighting antioxidants. It works to fight free radicals, thereby reducing cancer risk. Watermelon is particularly useful in fighting colon cancer, perhaps due to its cleansing effect. It's quite high in lycopene, the same cancer fighter present in tomato products. The fruit is also rich in carotenoids, substances that

give color to plants, which in turn can be converted to antioxidants and preventing lung, colon, prostrate and breast cancer. Watermelon is mildly diuretic and contains large amounts of carotenoids. Watermelon with red flesh is a significant source of lycopene. Preliminary research indicates the consumption of watermelon may have antihypertensive effects. These substances help the body produce urine, which cleans out chemicals. Furthermore, watermelons’ high potassium content helps remove uric acid from your blood, which can help prevent the development of painful kidney stones. The vitamins and minerals in watermelons help remove salts from your kidneys as well.

Watermelons have even more natural cure benefits for the eyes. Watermelon protects the eyes from age related conditions such as macular degeneration. Its Vitamin A content fights infection and prevents night blindness as well. The Vitamin C in watermelon is a powerful antioxidant that helps protect against cataracts. It's also an immune system booster. Research has shown that watermelons are rich in water-soluble B Vitamins, such as Vitamin B1, Vitamin B6 and magnesium. These vitamins help the body produce energy. Watermelons are also low in calories and have high water content, giving them an extra, healthy edge.

VS PARENTS “

There are several reasons why your angelic little daughter or son starts acting rebellious and unruly all of a sudden one fine "teenage" morning. You have to understand though that this is not the onslaught of a demonic possession or terrifying hatred towards you.

"You'll

never understand me. Never! There's no point talking to you!" These are just some of the sentences teens throw at their parents in almost all households of the world during their teenage years. Yes, you are not the only one. Every teenager goes through this phase when parents seem to be the enemy. And yes, when these few years pass those same teens suddenly understand that they were wrong about their parents and feel guilty about more than a few confrontations during their teenage years. But why does this

hostility arise in teenagers and why don't they seem to understand the "Big Picture" during the teenage years? Why does it take so long for them to become mature and comply with the wishes of their parents? Well, I'd like

TEENAGE LIFESTYLE to raise an important point here. Not all teens grow up to becoming understanding and drop their anger and rebellious resolve much later in their lives or, in some cases, never. It all depends on how the teenage years go. In this segment of Teenage Lifestyle, I'll be talking to both teenagers and parents on how to ease on through those "rough years". I say so because as hard as the teens think their life is, what you don't understand is that it is even harder for your parents to see the apples of their eyes to misunderstand, ignore and shrug them off as if they were the enemy. Confrontations lead to the onslaught of some very hurtful words which can depress a mother or a father beyond anything, because believe it or not, even Zeus, the all powerful king of the Gods on Mount Olympus, who was

known to be omnipotent, was hurt very easily by his son, Aries. And your parents are only human. First off let's begin by travelling into the psyche of the modern teenager and why they tend to act out, frustrating and depressing their parents. And hence, I'll begin by addressing the parents. There are several reasons why your angelic little daughter or son starts acting rebellious and unruly all of a sudden one fine "teenage" morning. You have to understand though that this is not the onslaught of a demonic possession or terrifying hatred towards you. And no, they are not any different from the day they first started walking. They have just begun to think for themselves in a new light. And there are many shades of that light. The process of becoming an adult is not only a phys

ical but also an emotional journey as well. Because of the magnitude of the metamorphosis, it makes sense that it is often tumultuous. But you must address the problems with the utmost care which in turn will help in turning out a happy, well-adjusted adult into the world. You must approach your children and cover your bases in the following ways: The key is Communication Once a child hits adolescence, communicating takes on new challenges. To facilitate effective and ongoing communication, you must help your child feel comfortable at all times to confide in you without any fear or hesitation. You must be open enough to not judge and condemn them immediately for something awkward they might have shared. This will make them fear you and hence create a distance between you and your child. Giving your teens the latitude to express themselves as they need to,

with honesty and openness, will bridge any gaps that might exist. Listen to them with full ears and an open mind. If they trust you completely, those few years will be more comfortable for both you and your children. Let there be Guided Freedom When teenagers start moving towards independence and adulthood, a parent’s job is to support and assist as necessary to help a teen learn and grow safely. But there is such a thing as too much sugar in your tea. Independence must be supported but also limited for their safety. And while imposing these limitations you must talk to your child and explain the reasons. Teenagers are entering new and attractive worlds every second and learning as they go. But if you guide them properly on this journey, without yelling at them or being extremely strict, more as a friend and a mentor, then the outcome will be much more smooth and positive. They must be able to Trust You

You must understand that trust is the most important thing with teenagers. As they trudge into unknown waters emotionally and otherwise, you must strive to remain open and nonjudgmental about issues that teenagers confide about. It’s important for a teen to feel comfortable and secure about talking to parents or the teenager may not share feelings and troubles. As a parent, you must be able to trust that your teen will follow house rules, keep commitments, and be responsible and respectful. Do not instantly assume that he/she is good for nothing and ruin anything he/she touches. If treated in this way, they will develop an impending dislike for you which may lead to more assertively rebellious behavior. For a comfortable and positive teen-parent relationship, be there for them as a friend. In this delicate time, they don't need a drill sergeant, but a mentor. Steer towards the green

A teenager naturally participates in risk-taking behaviors as she defines her self-concept and seeks to gain new experiences. Positive risk-taking behaviors might include sports, class politics, volunteering and learning new skills. But sometimes teens who have unresolved anger may opt for negative risk-taking instead. Negative risk-taking includes drug use, alcohol, gang activity, eating disorders, self-mutilation and reckless driving. As a parent you must keep tabs on your teen whether they are steering themselves into the green zone or the red, without intruding openly into their personal space. Keep an eye out and encourage positive risk taking. This, and trust, as mentioned before, will help them later on in their lives both profes

TEENAGE LIFESTYLE sionally and personally. I'm quite certain that your teens sometimes seem to get angry for no reason. But, trust me, nothing happens for "no reason". There are many reasons that a teen will get angry, argue with and talk back to a parent. Here a few: • The teen has something to say, it is important to them and the parent isn't listening. • The teen has learned that if you argue, you will get out of whatever trouble they are in as their parent will give up. • The teen has a lack of respect for the parents. The next time your teen is arguing with you, try to figure out if it is because of one of these reasons. You cannot always control what they do. But one step at a time, you can teach them the correct way to handle the world around them. Teens get so heated in arguments with parents because, to them, so much is at stake: they are fighting to make a parent see that they are not the child the parents think they know. Patience my dear parents, the keyword is Patience. Show patience towards your teen today and tomorrow you will be rewarded with a wonderful man or woman who will be doing something spectacular for the world. And now, On to the teenagers: Well guys, today I'll be giving you little pieces of advice at the risk of sounding a bit preachy. But you know what they say about advice don't you? Advice tends to be something you don't truly appreciate until you wish you had taken it. It's not just you; we all do it. So let's get on with it shall we? Throughout your teenage years there are many things that you will eventually learn even though you ignore the advice about those things. What tops that list, is none other than self control. From eating tasty foods, to spending every penny of your pocket money, self control can get you out of many tight spots in the future. Learn to save money, learn to eat healthy and

24 PAGES

stay fit and learn to plan ahead. All of these require those two magic words, self control. Do the things you love, not the things others love. Follow your own passion and be the person you want to be. But in the course of doing so, do not lose yourself. Have your bases covered. Get a proper education and keep your passion alive alongside that. In doing so, you are sharpening your skills in what you love, like painting, photography, writing, etc. and if those don't work out as well as you thought they would, you'll still have plan B to fall back to. One important thing that you should learn about money is how to manage and save it for rainy days. Be smart with money from now. Ask your parents to teach you the ways of monetary management and you'll be thankful 12 years later. Turn off your phone sometimes and go outside to sit under a tree once in a while - spend some quality time with yourself. Observe the things that go on around you. They will help you learn how the world works. Facebook won't teach you about the workings of the world contrary to what you might think. Have fun - "Offline fun". Keep focused on school but make sure you are having fun and making friends in the process. Read lots of books and stay away from screens. Finally, spend some time with your parents. They have been caring for you without taking a look at themselves since the day you were born. I think they deserve a few hours from your "busy schedule". Try to make them smile, once in a while. It's worth it! Well that's all for this segment. Hope you enjoyed it! But wait; from this issue onwards all you teens can contact me directly. If you are facing any sort of trouble, need any advice or

need to figure something out, you can email me at amiya.pages@gmail.com. I will try my level best to assist you with your problems whatever they may be. I don't claim to be a Jeanie that I'll magically make your problems disappear, but I'll try to help as much as I can. Also I will design my articles based on your emails so that they can help you move forward. Stay well, everybody! Model: Pinak, Mayami, Shopno, Lamiya, Sumaiya, Porshi Ruma

TRAVEL This time for our adventure journey,

we went to srimongol at “HUM-HUM falls” in Sylhet. We the team of 18 people arrived at 6 o’clock in the morning from Dhaka to Srimongol station by train. It was quite a sunny morning. After getting down from train, everyone started drinking morning tea as we all knew what Sylhet is famous for but trusts me that tea was not that much good at all. So being disappointed, we started our adventure toward “HUM-HUM falls”. After that allof us just ride on ‘ChaderGari’ by separated in two groups. ‘ChaderGari’ is a special type of jip which is made heavily to run in this way of road. You may have been seen this also in bandarban. Actually it was my second time to the ‘HUM-HUM falls’. 1st time was 1year before when it was just invented. So the road and way to there was very familiar to me. Everyone became chill when our transport just entered to the ‘Louya-Chora Forest’, the real beauty of forest. Big trees beside the road, it’s like they were saluting us. We saw few monkeys running in front of us and they were shouting as like mad. Few of ours were scared because of that. But after all it’s the beauty which caught up our eyes mostly. With ‘ChaderGari’ we went to the village near by the ‘HUM-HUM falls’ where we got our guide. Started walking toward the forest then our real journey to the forest began. We went through slippery paths buzzing with malaria and dengue spreading

Mosquitoes; we saw a number of insects that we had hardly come across in our lives. Hiking through the hilly tracks of that slippery water way was pretty dangerous. After all being 2nd timer, I was cursing myself for not being able to envisage how tiring, dangerous and fearsome this trip could turn into, promising myself not to go for any other adventure ever. But here I am, walking through one of the largest forest of Bangladesh. Basically, adventure is like a drug, but with positive side effects. Once you get addicted to it, it’s very hard to get rid of it. However, these addictions are the ones enlightening up our lives. As we all know for students and young people, adventure helps to develop leadership skills and enhance team work, it also teaches outdoor survival skills and improves problem solving dexterity, helping to take up responsibilities and challenges. Because even the tiniest mistake can lead to the most severe damage, so the main idea is to stay focused and not to rush at all. All of us were very much focused. After walking more than 4hours to the ‘HUM-HUM falls’, we reached to our destination. The falls is just awesome one. I never imagined that it could be this kind of big. Everyone started swimming there. Some of us got busy to take pictures. The tiredness of our long journey just brought us a happy moment .

After spending 2 more hours there; we took the same way to the village. While coming back to village I realized that it has become more of an amusement park rather than a natural beauty, small shops and cigarette packets and soft drinks cans were thrown into the water. People were eventually playing music loudly, the decent look of a natural, calm and purity was lost. After this visit of ‘HUM-Hum falls’, I realized the importance of preserving natural spots otherwise soon this kind of place will lose his own beauty by the people. In other tourism country, there are teams who look after this. So, I wish our government will give a sharp eye on it. By this our tourism will speared more and more.

Everyone started swimming there. Some of us got busy to take pictures. The tiredness of our long journey just brought us a happy moment .after spending 2 more hours there; we took the same way to the village.

ENTERTAINING SITE Now let’s move on to material. You must wear threaded clothes during this heat as different skin diseases are very common during this time. The most problematic part of women’s outfits re their undergarments. Nowadays teens and young women wear undergarments made of silk or synthetic materials. But this is not advisable during summer. Use those made of thread or cotton. The same advice goes out to men in regard of their underwear. Now let’s move on to type. Those who work for a living have to dress accordingly in formal attire. It is advisable for men to wear shirt, pant, tie, socks of light colors. And it will be good for women if they fashion salwar kamiz or sarees of threaded or cotton materials. For housewives, loose clothes will be suitable instead of tight fitting attires.

Young men and women usually are more conscious about fashion. During this heat youngsters prefer T-shirts, both maggi and short sleeved, and jeans to go with them. Along with them, matching bangles, watches and sandals are commonplace. Sunglasses should be worn suited to the face and bags, suited to the type of work they do. And for those women who are a bit more fashion conscious, they like to wear skirts, fatuas, short skirts, leggings, jeggings, sleeveless and long necked tops, tiles, half pants, etc. And men prefer polo t-shirts and stylish shirts along with fatuas, Punjabis a lot. In Dhaka many forms of these attires

can be found in Bashundhara City, Rifles Square, Rapa Plaza, Pink City and Jamuna Future ParK. Cheaper options can be found in New Market, opposite to Dhaka College, Mouchak or Gausia. When buying clothes you must keep your complexion, figure and height in mind. First check whether it matches your personality. And finally build an interest in yourself self to buy and wear outfits made in your own country. That is because your contribution to buying even one outfit is boosting the economy of the country.

Khan Selim

LIGHTING UP Abdul Alim Khan Selim, He is our todays hero...

The Pages: Banking sector is very much city centric, especially Dhaka and Chittagong centric. Government, including central bank and other related to banking sector were talking more about the decentralization. There are almost 56 banks available around the country. There are a lot of branches both in city and rural area. After taking these initiatives do you think the decentralization has occurred in banking sector? Selim: Decentralization is being taken place now-a-days. The ratio to build up branches has been set up 1:1 in city and rural area for our new generation banks. That means if we open a branch in city another branch has to be opened in rural area. The Government had permitted us to open 6 branches while giving the license. From those we have opened three in city and three in rural area. And now the Government has given a clearer definition on city. B-graded Pouroshova (Municipality) will be considered as city. Many small Upajila of our country has been developed as Pouroshova. Even if we open a branch over there that will be considered as a branch of city region. The banking service would be different if the system could be made like this before 10-15 years ago. Whatever, now in this system the whole banking system will be decentralized to city to rural area within next 3-4 years. The Pages: You are talking about the branches. That has already been progressed a lot. Out of eight and half thousand branches of 56 commercial banks of country 5 thousand are in the rural area. But recently in a survey of central bank found that 82 percent of deposit all over the country comes from the city but loan is being distributed 89 percent. On the other hand, in rural area 11 percent loan is being distributed against 18 percent deposit. As a result, we see that the capital is being centralized rather than decentralized? Selim: For this you have to look towards the development principle of the Government too. Most of the development and industrialization has been occurred centering the two cities. We have been demanding for a long time to spread the garments industry from villages to villages. But it’s not happening. The garments factories of Gajipur and Maona also do their banking in Gulshan. If they had the opportunity to open LC from there,

then they could do their banking from there. Decentralization might happen. But it is absent. The core problem is infrastructural crisis. Suppose, even if I want to finance to make garments factory no one will go there. Because of the infrastructural problem like gas, electricity is not available there. The Pages: You are talking about the scarcity of infrastructure. But the loan is being distributed you are saying most of them are being distributed capital’s Motijheel, Dhanmondi, Gulshan and kotowali and Doublemuring of Chitagong commercial area centric. But there are so many places infrastructurally developed. Why the bank has been centralized in terms of its loan distribution? Selim: There is reason behind it. Let’s consider our bank. There is a branch at Kamalpur in Dhamrai. There are lots of industries available here. In the meanwhile we have been proposed to finance in the giant project. But right now it is risky to inject huge amount of money over there. For this reason banks have been confined their big financing activities in commercial areas mostly. The Pages: Now in these circumstances, what should the government do to reduce the discrimination between cities and rural areas? And what are the plans of your bank in this aspect? Selim: We wanted to establish our head office at Rangpur. We wanted to make the Rangpur economically strong. To eradicate famine from this region, this is known as “Monga”. We want to provide the banking service to each and every corner of Rangpur. Primarily we were inhibited because of its infrastructural crisis. But we will go there, it may take some time. It’s true that more than 80 percent of loan in being distributed in city. But this scenario will be changed gradually.

establish a bank over there then they will deposit their money to the bank. There are many `kutirshilpa` around us but cannot getting developed because of scarcity of money. We will finance these sectors. We will uplift the small entrepreneurs by providing small capital. Thus the rural development will change the whole economic picture of our country. The Pages: Banks generally like to finance to the big clients. Because they can have the lower cost of production & you have the higher profit from this. Now how will you manage this situation? Selim: We have taken the decision in our board meeting that we will not move for big investment as we are very much feared of the scandal of Hallmark and Bismillah group. Many giant clients have communicated us for huge amount of loan. But we cordially denied them. The highest amount of loan we have provided from our bank is 65 crore taka, though we don’t have the lack of money. Though we have started with 443 crore paid up capital we are interested to pay loan amounting taka 5-10 crore to small entrepreneurs. The cost of fund increases of this but the risk decreases, because the small clients don’t have the tendency to be a bankrupt. If we financed big clients we could make more profit. But, if any client fails to pay after taking 200 crore taka as loan, then our capital might be vanished.

The Pages: You are saying about financing in rural area, now if you finance in rural in which sectors your bank is going to finance? Selim: Many of the villages have local haat bazaar (marketplace). There several crore of taka transactions are taken place regularly. But there is no bank. For this reason the village people keep their money at their waist or in bags. If we can

LIGHTING UP The Pages: You were talking about to make your head office at Rangpur. Almost every bank’s head office of our country is in capital either in Motijheel or Gulshan. Why the culture is so? Selim: Yes, there is a reason too. Now all the activities of our bank are Dhaka centric. The head offices of our bank have some work with Bangladesh bank frequently. It is not possible to come from Rangpur to Dhaka frequently. Bogra and Rajshahi have the central bank’s branch. But it is not possible to execute all the activities from there. For this reason we could not be able to establish the head office at Rangpur according to our wish. Even central bank could not be decentralized fully. For this reason we are hanged in capital. As a result, even having 56 banks 75 percent of populations are out of banking service. The Pages: Now is there any necessity to change the principle of decentralization which has been taken to decentralize the banking service from city to rural area? Selim: Yes, a lot of changes are needed. Many villages have the problem of networking. Our banks’ all branches are online. If there is no network we will not be able to conduct our business. Moreover, there is a problem to carry the money from remote rural areas. If anyone wants to

take one or two crore cash amount suddenly, we are unable to provide. In these cases central bank has to take some step to transfer the money quickly. Not only taking the steps in paper but also they will have to take some realistic steps. The Pages: Now I want to enter into your personal life. You have a lot of identity. You were a teacher, then a businessman, now a vice chairman of a bank. In which identity you feel more comfortable? Selim: I am not actually successful as a businessman. I have finished my student life in 1974.I had started teaching as my first career. Actually the problem has occurred there. Those who ever in teaching profession they cannot do any misconduct easily. For this reason I could not be that much successful as a businessman. The dream about involving in banking sector was from a long time ago. I tried to get a banking license from the time of Ershad Government. At last I got it. Hope I will be successful here. The Pages: You were talking about freedom fight. Then you were a student of Iqbal hall (now Jahurul Haq Hall). Explain a bit about that time. Selim: I’m starting from 2nd March. Our Iqbal Hall was the base camp for all students’ leaders. In the 2nd March

This

The Pages: How was the feeling while you were entering in Dhaka city in 18th December? How was the picture of Dhaka then? Selim: I did not see a lot of dead bodies in the road of Dhaka. Mostly saw the joy of people. First I went to the room of Iqbal Hall. After moving there I did not see anything in my room. Only I got my bed mat at store room. After that I felt very good. Being a free man of an independent country we all started again.

Back at 1995, I and five of my friends came across with a musical combination. “Baula” was formed right after that. Reality and the end of our education career broke the lineup and

BUSINESS

eCommerce

business industry is now going to be introduced as an industry in our country; where public, private and the government will work together. According to my previous writings, here I'm going to share our country’s present situations in eCommerce business. At present eCommerce business is growing day by day in Bangladesh. Where every day new entrepreneurs are created which is a very good indication for the youth, especially those who are always thinking about new innovations. I would like to draw the readers’ attentions that our youth always comes in the front line whenever they need to come. According the eCommerce industry purpose and the youth are playing a very enormous and dynamic role to build this industry like any others business industry. They are the first initiators who have taken on the risk without any support from any others authorities. Which is pretty appreciable and to prove the nations that the youth can achieve anything if they really wanted to do it.

An interesting part of this eCommerce industry is that the government is also taking a step forward to make eCommerce an industry in the near future.

From private sectors: Now a days in Bangladesh not only the Bangladeshi owners, and entrepreneurs who starts, there are many international eCommerce portal owners who now exist in Bangladesh. Also there are many more Bangladeshi industrialists who also are planning to introduce the eCommerce business in Bangladesh very shortly. According to the present scenario I would like to inform all of my dear readers; if you are still thinking about starting eCommerce business than please don’t wait too much because this is the high time for all the small entrepreneurs to introduce your own ideas and products. So therefore

62 PAGES

you can easily make your own area in the market place and the customers groups. Why government: An interesting part of this eCommerce industry is that the government is also taking a step forward to make eCommerce an industry in the near future. It is mentionable that; throughout the eCommerce concept government has taken remarkable steps just to make this industry similar to Europe, America and south Asia. According to statistics we are the only country now a days where the eCommerce industry prospects level is very high indeed. I have had an opportunity to work with some government projects where the department is solely concentrating to develop this industry in our country. As per my engagement in these projects I am sharing some of them which I think should be shared with the readers for further understanding how important it is and will be. This is just a beginning of the eCommrce industry and the end is not too short it’s been a long time to be addressed eCommerce as an industry in Bangladesh. To know about the implementations of the eCommerce project by the Bangladesh government, I would like to invite everyone to see the below projects and links. So therefore, we all have rights to know about the government activities and to share our views, ideas to develop our country standards as like any other developed country. At the beginning of the government initiatives, the government has made Access to Information (a2i) programmer in Bangladesh. Where I can see the entire projects are based on our rural area development purpose. In accordance it's a good sign for us to build the industry throughout the country not for only the business or industrial area purpose. Please take a look below at some of their innovations under the (a2i) programme. 1.

Innovations in service delivery (where all the unions are being captured)

2. E-purjee (towards equitable market participations) 3. District eService center - DESCs (Government at citizens Doorsteps) 4. National portal framework - NFP (A common face of government, by government, for citizens) 5. Service

(Financing innovations) 6. e- Tathyakosh (Enhancing access to livelihood informations) 7. Rethinking temporary Migrations (Participatory development and UISCs) 8. Policy interventions (From advocacy to reform) 9. Union information and service center -UISC (Connecting the bottom millions) 10. Quick wins (Creating risk space for innovation in service delivery) 11. Partnerships (Mobilizing cooperative advantages) 12. UISC Blog (Hearing the unheard) All of these innovations to develop the eCommerce industry and to re organize our people to become an educated nation and also to create the inland business market, where the buyer and sellers are in the same country. Along with the above participations of the government there is another vital innovation that has been made by the a2i programme that is e-Service for all Bangladeshi nationalities and the overseas Bangladeshis too. Where the nationalities are getting every government services through the eService. It is also a continuous process which is commencing and more attractive projects are going to be added in the near future. As for your further understandings please visit the web site: www.a2i.pmo.gov.bd Apart from these initiatives, the a2i programme aims to introduce eCommerce business in Bangladesh and encourage the youth and people about the eCommerce business they have organized eCommrce fair in every divisions. Where the fair was sponsored and organized by the DC and DC offices. Which is quite good for the future entrepreneurs who will get the ready customers with due respect to all the entrepreneurs doesn't required to make his customer base or not to spend too much money to informing the people or customers. Let's come into the point I made in the beginning, why should I be elaborating too much about the government initiatives in this topics. As I said in my earlier publications, to make a new business industry in a country everybody needs to participate. It is not an individual’s job or not an individual company’s job to make it needs to be a collective effort. It is a property and it is

the responsibility of all of us to build a new business era where participations is required from the nationalities, entrepreneurs, as well as from the government. Without the government’s support we can't build our eCommerce business as an industry. Just for an example in the entire world every developed country has been developed because of the people of the country and the government has worked together. I'm pretty much hopeful that this is a time to prove to ourselves that we are Bangladeshi nationalities also can make the eCommerce industry as a whole. To be continued.

Socio

Economic development of a country depends on the equal distribution of wealth, information and various services among the people in various communities and geographical area. Bangladesh is a developing country having about 160 million people of which about 80% lives in village and about 40% of people live under poverty level of which most of the poor people live in village. The Vision 2021 and the associated Perspective Plan 2010-2021 have set solid development targets for Bangladesh by the end of 2021. Those targets if achieved will transform the socio-economic environment of Bangladesh from a low income economy to the first stages of a middle income economy. Along with higher per capita income, Vision 2021 lays down a development scenario where citizens will have a higher standard of living, will be better educated, will face better social justice, will have a more equitable socio-economic environment, and the sustainability of development will be ensured through better protection from climate change and natural disasters. The associated political environment will be based on democratic principles with emphasis on human rights, freedom of expression, rule of law, equality of citizens irrespective of race, religion and creed, and equality of opportunities. The Bangladesh economy will be managed within the framework of a market economy with appropriate government interventions to correct market distortions, to ensure equality of opportunities, and to ensure equity and social justice for all. The financial inclusion through inclusive banking is one of the tools to achieve vision 2021. Financial inclusion or inclusive financing is the delivery of financial services at affordable costs to sections of disadvantaged and low-income segments of society. The term "financial inclusion" has gained importance since the early 2000s, a result of findings about financial exclusion and its direct correlation to poverty. The United Nations defines the goals of financial inclusion as follows: • access at a reasonable cost for all households to a full range of financial services, including savings or deposit services, payment and transfer services, credit and insurance; • sound and safe institutions governed by clear regulation and industry performance standards; • financial and institutional sustainability,

to ensure continuity and certainty of investment; and • competition to ensure choice and affordability for clients. The approach to Financial Inclusion in developing countries such as Bangladesh is somewhat different from the developed countries. In case of developed countries, the focus is on the relatively small share of population not having access to banks or the formal payment systems. Whereas in Bangladesh, we are looking at the majority who are excluded. Dr. Atiur Rahman, Governor, Bangladesh Bank defined financial inclusion in Bangladesh as access to financial services from : a) Officially regulated and supervised entities (banks and financial institutions licensed by Bangladesh Bank , Micro Finance Institutions-MFIs licensed by Micro-credit Regulatory Authority –MRA, registered co-operatives), and, b) Official entities themselves (post offices offering savings, money transfer and insurance services, national savings bureaus). There is a disparity among the number of branches and outstanding deposits and advances in the banking system classified by rural and urban area. As per annual report (2012-2013) of Bangladesh Bank, at end December 2000, the number of rural branches was 3659 (59.8 percent of total branches), which increased to 4827 (57.3 percent of total branches) at end of June 2013. The number of branches in urban areas increased from 2460 (40.2 percent of total branches) as of end December 2000 to 3600 (42.7 percent of total branches) at end June 2013. The number of rural branches increased at a lower rate compared with the number of urban branches. Total deposits of rural branches increased to Taka 1030.9 billion (18.0 percent of total deposits) at end June 2013 from Taka 160.6 billion (22.6 percent of the total deposits) as of end June 2000. The amount of urban deposits increased to Taka 4690.2 billion (82.0 percent of total deposits) at end June 2013 compared to Taka 549.2 billion (77.4 percent of total deposits) as on 30 June 2000. The amount of advances in rural areas increased from Taka 100.1 billion as of end June 2000 to Taka 434.3 billion at end June 2013. However, the share of rural advances decreased to 10.2 percent as of end June 2013 from 16.9 percent of the same period in 2000. The amount of urban advances increased from Taka 493.5 billion (83.1 percent of total advances) at end June 2000 to Taka

3813.8 billion (89.8 percent of total advances) as on 30 June 2013. Despite substantial bank branches and increase of membership of MFIs and other institutions, about 25% of adult population is still financially excluded. A substantial proportion of the households, especially in rural areas , is still outside the coverage of formal banking systems and is therefore unable to access mainstream financial products such as bank accounts and low cost loans. Bangladesh Bank has taken strong initiatives in recent times to widen the coverage of banking services specially by including the disadvantageous section of the society in the formal financial systems. Along with the moral suasion, a mummer of policy measures covering both deposit and credit products, some of which are very innovative for our banking systems, have been taken in this regard. These include: one in five branches must be in rural areas (for 9 new banks it is 1:1); availability of highest quality banking services to farmers by allowing them to open Bank account with minimum initial deposit (Tk.10.00 only; issuing branch licenses to all SME/Agriculture service centers; easy and effective access to banking services for physically incapable people; relaxing conditions of loan repayment and providing fresh facilities to natural calamity affected farmers; mandatory participation in agriculture / rural credit for all banks, provision to agriculture credit to sharecroppers ; formulation and implementation of Agriculture and SME credit policies and targets, putting emphasis on financing women entrepreneurs; arranging refinancing schemes for banks, developing ICT solutions (mobile banking , smart cards etc), school banking, garments workers account; Banking Services for Street Urchin and Working Children etc for inclusive banking. Recently Bangladesh Bank introduced Agent Banking for providing banking and financial services to the underserved population through engaged agents under a valid agency agreement, rather than a teller/ cashier. Bangladesh Bank has also decided to promote this complimentary channel to reach to the poor segment of the society as well as existing bank customer with a range of financial services especially to geographically dispersed locations. Who says population explosion is a curse for Bangladesh? The country's vast population, being gradually turned into precious human resource, has proved to the outside world that given uninterrupted political stability, Bangladesh could set a unique model of faster development for others to follow. Today Nobel laureate Prof Amartya Sen often cites, in many international conferences, Bangladesh as a county where people strike miracles in terms of development efforts. Bangladesh is one of the fastest progressive countries of this world where the Youths are mostly responsible for changing the lifestyles and the society. They fights with the poverty, they fights with the unemployment problem and the nasty corruption of society. They are to face the poor education system of Bangladesh, and they don’t get any extra advantages while working. Although, government doesn’t take any initiative to speedier the existing slow

internet speed; these youths of Bangladesh fights with the other peoples of this world to snatch the best jobs for them from the outsourcing marketplace. Besides, marketer and business owner from all over the world found the whole stuffs of Outsourcing From Bangladesh is cheaper, skillful in doing any given jobs and awesome in quality. Another Nobel laureate Prof Muhammad Yunus has earned global laurels by proving to the outside world that even the extreme poor can elevate their status from paupers to self-reliant individuals through micro-credit. Millions of readymade garment workers, most of whom are uneducated and half-literate girls and women, have fattened the national exchequer with foreign currencies through exports. Hundreds of thousands of hard-working workers have turned national heroes by earning foreign currencies as expatriate workers abroad. Today, thanks to promotion of information technology (IT) by different

governments in power and consequent support for raising internet density in Bangladesh, thousands of otherwise unemployed youths have taken to Internet outsourcing jobs to earn money which they cannot even dream of earning in formal jobs inside their home country. The European Commission additionally has recently included Bangladesh as one of the ideal IT outsourcing destinations in the world. Odesk Corp. one of the leading internet based marketplaces of outsourced really works has rated Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, as the ideal third city amongst the international cities as an outsourcing destination. With computer literacy rising as days go by, many young people have taken outsourcing jobs which are offered by other organizations. It can be done at home or abroad. They have seized the opportunity because they offer low production cost to firms based abroad. Mostly the rich countries like the USA and many others in Europe are offering this to get quality production at low cost in due time. Mainly IT-based jobs like data processing, programming, graphics designing, multimedia, virtual assistant and many more are being outsourced from countries like Bangladesh. Even some newspapers in Bangladesh outsource editing of articles or news items from areas like Kolkata or other low-cost cities of the developing countries. In fact, it augurs well for Bangladesh that the young IT experts and professionals of Bangladesh are securing a strong position increasingly in the global outsourcing markets. They are doing it because of low labor cost and quality of product as well as skill and efficiency of local IT people whom the world IT industry worth $3.4 trillion looks forward to for outsourcing. The Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS) lend credence to this. Sources at the BASIS say, renowned companies move towards Bangladesh with new orders regularly as global IT industries are expected to rise in the next few years.

BUSINESS The low-cost labor pool and real potentials are the key competitive advantages for Bangladeshi IT people. With the production cost rising in other countries like India, China and the Philippines, Bangladesh has emerged as a lucrative outsourcing market. The average wage of an outsourced IT sector employee is around $8 per hour in Bangladesh compared to $20 in India and $10 to 15 in the Philippines. Moreover, Bangladesh has one of the largest and youngest populations in Asia, with 150 million people of whom, some 65 per cent, are under 25. According to a BASIS estimate, there are some 15,000 freelancers in Bangladesh doing outsourced work for technology companies from across the globe. Besides, the country has also some 500 registered IT outsourcing companies, which collectively employ an additional 20,000 workers. Even Gartner in its annual listing of top countries for IT outsourcing globally has found that Bangladesh offers an attractive cost proposition for the investors, as its low salary level and low-cost of living are ideal for jobs that are commoditiser and have low risk. "Bangladesh an emerging country from a n

is

offshore location perspective, but ranks poorly in language, infrastructure and data and intellectual property security," its findings say. "Although it offers a good cost proposition, the government has to address many issues such as education, infrastructure and data security or IP protection in order to propel the top ranks," said Gartner, which has put Bangladesh on its list of top 30 destinations for global IT outsourcing for 2010-11.

The BASIS is doing a pioneering job in promoting outsourcing in Bangladesh. That is exactly why it has instituted awards to young IT professionals. The awards recognize outstanding performance by organizations and individuals in the field of outsourcing of software and IT services. But then the sector in Bangladesh needs proper guidelines for its flourishing. The demographics reveal that Bangladesh ranks fourth with the largest number of people falling into the 20-34 age groups with a steady supply of fresh engineering graduates every year. But an examination of the ICT development index shows that Bangladesh ranks low in terms of access and usage, combined with a high internet cost that has only Ghana to rival it. Although the average rental of office space is low and the political climate is relatively stable, there is very little done regarding Intellectual Property Protection (IPR) which acts as a disincentive for entrepreneurs. There must be an increase in focus on the IT education sector through further investments. This is especially

necessary to develop the market skill for freelance work. The government will have to handle the industry efficiently and adopt a holistic approach to the IT sector. At the same time, it must be ensured that development of the required infrastructure is taken seriously. Infrastructural development needs to be adequate, and at least two fiber optic cables are necessary to and from the UK and the US market. Tax incentives and a One-Stop-for-All service where government approval can be achieved in one sitting needs to be ensured, thus reducing red tape. Some government incentives like skill-training grants and employment incentive grants for export service companies being provided by other countries need to be introduced. Bangladesh gains strong position global IT outsourcing market.

Generally

Budget denotes the anticipation of accounting of income and expenditure for a given period. i.e. to maintain the balance in the earning and expenditure. The budget is also known as the annual financial statement of a country. The government budget is not far difference from an individual’s budget. Ideally a budget may be balanced, surplus or deficit. Like an individual budget government budget also three types as said earlier. Balanced budget is this budget where government revenue and expenditure are equal, surplus budget indicates excess revenues than expenditure and deficit budget indicates when expenditure exceeds government revenues. Bangladesh budget is always deficit in nature since our independence. As per Wikipedia “A Government Budget is a government document presenting the government’s proposed revenues and spending for a financial year”. It is often passed by the parliament and upon a month long discussion it is being approved by the president or chief executive of that nation. Usually budget is presented to the parliament by the Finance Minister. If everything goes okay then the budget of Bangladesh for 2014-15 will announce by the finance minister of Bangladesh Abul Maal Abdul Muhith on June 05, 2014. This will be the 8th budget of the present finance minister. Pre-budget discussion already started from April 02, 2014. Finance minister himself is very much active on some disclosures of the upcoming budget. He already informed the media that the size of the budget for 2014-2015 will be BDT2.5 trillion. The budget size for FY 2013-14 was BDT2.2 trillion. National Board of Revenue has been arranging series of discussion with the

different business & trade bodies almost every day. The leaders of trade bodies are expressing their demand. What we are observing most trade bodies wants to lower the existing tax, VAT rate. Some of them are also requesting to increase the tax on imported items which are locally produced. This is really good proposal. To encourage the domestic industries we need to restrict imported item. As an emerging country the next budget should focus on it. We are having of more concentration on GDP growth but very little concern about investment. Investment is the prerequisite for GDP growth. Thus government investment in large infrastructure should be increased. There should be clear indication in the budget speech regarding padma bridge, mono rails, deep seaport, flyovers, 4 lane highways, electricity, water management and other big projects. Government must give importance on political stability. Without political stability it will be difficult to maintain the existing growth. We have already experienced lower revenue collection for existing FY. Therefore government need to create congenial atmosphere to

encourage private investment as the private investment is the prime catalyst of our economy. Private investors are still in dilemma and they are still in the way to wait and see, what will happen in the coming day. Government must work on to bring back the confidence of private investors. Some renowned economist including government officials believes that there is huge black money prevailing in our economy. The source of black money must be stopped somewhere. Government should not give any privilege to the black money holder in the coming budget. Tax net should be increased without increasing existing tax rate. NBR may bring all the landowner, flat owner under tax net. Tax collection process need to be modernized and simplified. Good governance in all stage to be ensured. There should some indication and good gesture of the government in the coming budget regarding corruption. Corruption is the single component which is not only bringing back to us the vicious cycle but also tarnishing our image in international arena. Let’s hope for a good budget by the new government.

MOHAMMAD SIDDIKUR RAHMAN (GOLF) This man is known as the Tiger Woods of Bangladesh and people hadn’t even heard of him since very recently. Even when Siddikur was an amateur on the golfing circuit, he managed to win 12 golfing events in Asia - five times in Bangladesh, once in India and twice in Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Nepal. He entered the professional golfing arena in 2005 and dazzled the world immediately with his natural talent. He secured events in international tournaments in the preceding years with continuity - PGTI Players Championship at Poona Golf Club and the HUDA-GTPL – Unitech Haryana Open in 2008. Later on in 2009 Siddikur became the first Bangladeshi golfer to win an Asian Tour Event at the Brunei Open in 2010. It was quite the battle where he went head-on South African Jbe Kruger in a playoff during the final stages. In 2011 he also went on to win the Negeri Sembilan Masters Invitational. And only last year he won the Hero Indian Open.

NIAZ MURSHED (CHESS) Niaz Murshed was born on May 13, 1966 with an extraordinary mind. He became the first Grandmaster of chess from South Asia and is still one of the most prominent and respected names in chess in the world. He learned to play chess at an early age from his elder brother and was immediately immersed into the intellectually challenging game. By the age of 12 he became one of the top chess players of Bangladesh and won the national championships consecutively in 1979, 1980, 1981 and 1982. Murshed earned his first Grandmaster norm in 1984 due to his success in Bela Crkva Open, Yugoslavia (1983), Oakham School Youth Tournament (ahead of Nigel Short and Maxim Dlugy), Novag Commonwealth Chess Tournament 1984, Hong Kong 1984. He earned his second grandmaster norm in 1986 due to his outstanding performance in the Capstain International Tournament, Dhaka (1985) and Calcutta Grandmasters Tournament, Calcutta (1986). In 1987, FIDE awarded him the Grandmaster title, making him the first Grandmaster originating from the South Asian region of the world. After countless successes in between he recently, once again, became the national champion in 2012. Niaz Murshed is truly a spectacular mind and a beacon for our country.

BROJEN DAS (SWIMMING) Bangladesh being the country of rivers also prides itself on having one of the greatest swimmers the world has ever seen. But the sad fact is that he also is unheard of and maybe forgotten. He is Brojen Das from Bikrampur and he is the first Asian and Bangladeshi to swim across the English Channel. He was invited to take part in the English Channel Swimming Competition in 1958. He participated in the swimming event accordingly which started at midnight on August 18, 1958 Brojen along with other competitors from 23 countries and reached the other side on the afternoon next day. Prior to crossing the English Channel he also swam in the Mediterranean Sea from Capri to Naples.

SPORTS ASIF HOSSAIN KHAN (SHOOTING) The National Shooting Federation Bangladesh is the governing body for shooting sport in Bangladesh and it came into the world spotlight with the success of Bangladeshi shooter Asif Hossain Khan. He started his shooting career in Pabna shooting club and his unrivalled aim led him to the big leagues in no time. At the age of 15 he participated took part in the 10 m Air rifle individual event in the 2002 Commonwealth Games and brought home the gold to Bangladesh. He also participated in the Olympics along with many other international shooting events and in the 4th South Asian Shooting Championship in Pakistan in 2002 he brought back two gold medals.

ZOBERA RAHMAN LINU (TABLE-TENNIS) A game enjoyed by boys in their school and college days but forgotten about in their later years is table tennis. But there is one woman who shined in this field and is still one of the prominent in the world through her record. She is the only Bangladeshi sportswoman to have won 16 national championships, for 24 years in a row, also more than any sportsperson in any country of the world. And for this achievement she was recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records in 2002. She is now a national Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF in Bangladesh. As you can see along with our tigers, there are other extraordinary men and women who had previously acted as beacons for Bangladesh and also long before the massive success of Bangladeshi cricket. Even today, sportsmen from Bangladesh are showing promise in many other fields of sport like archery, tennis, football, etc. But for the most part they fail to appear into the spotlight, are hugely underappreciated and underfunded. Other countries spend insane amounts of money on every field in which their country can outshine others in the world. But in our country athletes from other fields often don't receive any praise or hearty pats on the back for all their hard work and dedication towards their life's calling. They are not even given the proper recognition for their job. But should this go on? The choice is completely yours. I urge you to cheer on for every Bangladeshi out there who has it in them to take Bangladesh into the world stage and triumph. For all, not only a select few, Bangladeshis are TIGERS!

INTERIOR DESIGN A False ceiling is a secondary ceiling, hung below the main (structural) ceiling. It may also be referred to as a drop ceiling, T-bar ceiling, false ceiling, suspended ceiling, grid ceiling, drop in ceiling, or drop out ceiling and is a staple of modern construction and architecture in both residential and commercial applications. Can I know about the Benefits of a False Ceiling? There should be approximately 1 feet distance between the false ceiling and the primary ceiling. The false ceiling should have at least a height of 8 ½ feet from the floor level. False ceiling material is fixed either hanging from the primary ceiling or between the frames connecting walls and panels. The false ceiling should be constructed in accordance with the height of the beam and AC duct. It can also be constructed at different levels in places where there is no beam or duct. Also known as drop ceiling and suspended ceiling, it has now become an integral part of modern design and architecture. The area between the main ceiling and false ceiling is known as plenum space. This space is used to veil wiring, ductwork and piping. Benefits of a False Ceiling: • False ceiling is used to conceal the air conditioner and electrical appliances and the faults in plastering. •

False ceiling increases the interior beauty of the room. Earlier only the walls and floors of a room were given prominence in the interior decoration. Now as the trend of highlighting the designs of the upper part of the room is in vogue, false ceiling is widely used for this effect.

It is also essential for accentuating the lighting of the room. False ceiling is a necessary part of indirect lighting. False ceiling decreases the heat of the room.

It will reduce the volume of the room. This will reduce the usage of AC and thus helping in saving the power

For increasing the acoustics of a home theatre room, false ceiling is used. The ceiling panels of false ceiling can be easily removed. It helps in the repairing and maintenance of air conditioning, plumbing and wiring accessories by providing quick access to them. It makes cleaning the ceiling an easy task.

Types of false ceiling: Gypsum board: Lightweight, flexible and fire resistant, gypsum is most commonly used for false ceiling. It is tough, versatile and economical and is fast replacing other ceiling materials.

Metal ceiling panels: they are ideal for concealing ducts and wiring since they can be easily installed and maintained. They reduce overall cost since they are easy to install and access. They have a monolithic look, which gives the space a very modern look and blend with glass. Fiber mineral reinforced materials: false ceiling can be made with fiber or mineral reinforced tiles and fiberboard. They have high insulation against sound and fire. The fiber increases the hardness and the toughness of the material. Water repellents and preservatives can be added to increase the life of the products. POP (Plaster of Paris) is also frequently used in the construction of a suspended ceiling. First it is applied to a wood base or fiberboard, and then it is perched from the false ceiling. It is popular as it is lightweight and results in a smooth and uniform finish. Plywood/wpc sheets are used universally for their visual appeal. These ceilings are created with stripes of ply nailed or glued together. Because of their qualities, these ceilings are popular in a place in a cold climate.

False ceiling creates balancing multiple objectives: aesthetics, acoustics, integration with the building's infrastructure and improves indoor environmental quality includes ventilation, VOC emissions, lighting and thermal system control, thermal comfort, use of daylight for natural illumination and optimization of outdoor view availability.

“

The false ceiling should have at least a height of 8 ½ feet from the floor level. False ceiling material is fixed either hanging from the primary ceiling or between the frames connecting walls and panels.

Tips

HOW TO KEEP YOUR ANDROID HEALTHY!! By: Shomoy Mahmud

Many

different manufacturers release smartphones loaded with Android OS systems. The Android OS is available for free under the Apache license. The OS makes it easy for users to make calls, text, take photos, watch video, and surf the web. Downloading a lot of data to the Android smartphone means it will slow down over time. The battery can affect the phone’s performance when it gets old and loses its charge, and needs to be replaced. Users can preserve their phone batteries by taking good care of them and avoiding exposure to extreme temperatures. To improve overall performance, users are encouraged to delete unwanted software and media, close background programs, use memory management software, and also use the factory reset to remove all saved data from the phone. Smartphone retailers, name brand websites, and auction sites like eBay are all places users can find these phones.

Tip 1: Keep it Fully Charged Users will find that their Android Smartphones work best and last longer when kept fully charged. Take the time at the end of each day to plug the phone into the charger. Avoid using a phone until it completely runs out of power. This damages a phone’s ability to hold a charge and affects its performance. Most of the lithium-ion batteries in cell phones last between three to five years, if care is taken with them. It’s also important to avoid using the cell phone in extreme temperatures, as this can also affect the battery and lower its storage capacity.

Tip 3: Close Unused Apps and Processes Smartphones aren’t like desktop computers; they don’t have the same amount of processing power. Therefore, they do tend to slow down when several programs are open. If the smartphone does start to slow down, take the time to close a few of the

Temperature Stored At

Storage capacity affects the length of time a phone can be used before it must be recharged again, until eventually, the phone can’t hold a charge at all. The cooler the phone is kept when used and stored, the longer the battery will last. This isn’t always possible to achieve, but is good to keep in mind when dealing with performance issues.

Tip 2: Get Memory Management Software Users can download and install memory management software for free or a very low cost to use on their smartphones. These programs restore memory lost by defragmenting the hard drive or performing a recovery to find the lost information. Defragmentation also helps the Android run faster and this can even be done while using the phone. Once the software is installed, users can click on the app at any time to run the program and free up some memory. These software apps also provide other features for users to help them stay on top of their memory usage.

BIT 2 BITE background programs. Users can also end background processes running on the cell phone by using background task killer software. These apps are easy to download and use whenever needed. These programs work like the task manager on a desktop or laptop closing background processes when they freeze or when they slow down the computer.

Tip 4: Clear the Browser Cache Android smartphones are also capable of surfing the web, which is something that most users love. However, using the Internet for long periods of time can lead to a buildup of data in the phone’s active memory. The memory in the browser cache can start clogging up the phone’s active memory and slowing

84 PAGES

down the phone’s ability to surf the web. When this happens, users should clear out their browser cache. To clear the history, open up the browser and click on the "Menu," then click on "Options," then click "Settings," and then click the "Clear Cache" button. At this point, the phone will ask the user if he or she wants to clear the cache. Confirm the choice, and the phone will clear the browser cache.

Tip 5: Delete Cookies and Unused Programs or Media The Android smartphone is capable of storing a variety of information to refer back to or use. This information comes in the form of software apps,

photos, files, and video. Most of these things are accessible in the phone’s "Gallery," or on the main screen of the phone. Other kinds of information stored on the phone come in the form of "Cookies." Cookies are programs installed on a user’s website browser to help keep track of their web usage history for marketing purposes. These files and apps take up a lot of space and when the memory is full, nothing else can be stored. Taking the time to delete unwanted cookies, apps, and media can get a phone back up to peak performance. Deleting Cookies Many users end up with lots of cookies on their smartphone website browsers without realizing it. This can hinder the

user’s ability to surf the web quickly. Deleting cookies can help free up some memory and speed up the Android smartphone. Users can open up the website browser, then click on "Menu," then click on "More Options," then choose "Settings," and then click on "Clear all cookie data" and the phone will ask for verification before deleting the cookies.

Deleting Applications

Delete Media

Users can also manually free up a lot of storage space on their Android phones by deleting unused programs and media. Users can delete software apps on their phones by opening up the "Settings" menu, then clicking on "Applications," then click on "Manage Applications," then clicking on "Downloaded apps," and then select and "Uninstall" the application.

Users can delete various kinds of files and media from their phones by opening up the "Gallery" on the phone. Scroll through the gallery, tapping on files and images you want to delete to select them. When ready to delete the media, tap the "Delete" button on the bottom of the screen and follow the verification instructions.

Tip 6: Perform Factory Reset If the phone gets really clogged up and the user has trouble using it at all, it may be time for a system restore. This is a tip that should only be used as a last resort. Restoring the phone to its factory settings will delete all of the downloaded and saved files on the phone, so the user loses a lot of information. Users can restore their phones to the factory settings by opening up the "Menu," then clicking on "Settings," then clicking on "Privacy," and then clicking "Factory Data Reset." Select the option to "Reset Phone," and confirm to have the phone erase everything that has been added to it. This will only erase the information that has been added to the phone by the user. The phone’s operating system will still be intact and ready to use. It will basically be in the same state it was when you first received it.

PHOTOGRAPHY today's high-tech pro cameras by Nikon, Canon, Sony, etc and their respective VR II and IS lenses, people think that taking the perfect photograph is just a click away. But that is not the case at all. Having expensive gear and clicking at objects at random does not make for perfect snaps. Maybe the pictures will be a treat for the eyes on high definition screens but therein lays the catch. If conditions have to apply for a photo to look, rather feel, good then there is an obvious problem. If the composition of a photograph is perfect then that photo may be taken through one of the most mediocre devices, like a cell phone, and still look and feel good whenever viewed from anywhere. And thus, today I’d like to talk about a few tips and tricks of photo compositions. I hope that aspiring and amateur photographers will find a thing or two in this feature to apply to their shooting to get the most out of their cameras. In order to create a technically good, visually pleasing photograph it is required for the photographer have a solid understanding of both the technical and aesthetic sides of photography. The ability to intertwine the two is what propels the work of masters. The composition sets the mood for the shot and tells the story. Compositions can be used to evoke powerful emotional responses in a viewer, a goal for many photographers, but something that is achieved by few. There are thousands of technically perfect photographs in print and on the web and it seems there are as many talented amateurs emerging every day. But there is a notable difference in the work of a photographer who takes the time to think about the composition of their image. Before we go on to specifics I’d like to mention some of the most well known principles of photographic compositions. The first is the ‘Rule of Thirds‘. The basic principle behind the rule of thirds is to imagine breaking an image down into thirds (both horizontally and vertically) so that what you are seeing through your viewfinder can be broken down into virtually 9 parts and that important compositional elements should be placed along these lines or their intersections. There are

settings in your camera through which you can change the view on your viewfinder into a “Rule of Thirds” grid layout. Beginners should try it so that they can become more prone to compositional importance and layouts. [Picture of a grid] The theory is that if you place points of interest in the intersections or along the lines that your photo becomes more balanced and will enable a viewer of the image to interact with it more naturally. Once you get a hang of this rule you will surely find yourself taking wonderfully composed photographs worthy of the galleries. One of the basic mistakes that we make is that we don’t center our subjects unless doing so enhances the subject or benefits the composition. Placing a subject in the center of the frame provides an average view of a subject and robs the scene of interest and aesthetic value. There are many situations, however, when centering your subject is appropriate and necessary. Such instances would include a portrait where the subject is facing the camera, a bird flying directly toward the camera, and most subjects which are appropriate for a vertical format can usually be centered. A vertical shot of the Shahid Minar would really be an eye-soar if compare to a landscape style shot of the monument. You should not take my word for it but try it yourself. You’ll be surprised with the difference. Stray objects around your subject can ruin your composition. These unwanted objects in your frame are also called clutter. If the shot is not composed properly with an ample amount of clutter in it, then the photo loses its aesthetic value largely. You must learn to deal with these objects in a way that will not distract from your subject, or even better, enhance the subject and composition. Finally let us move on to light and colors. It is widely known among painters that different colors trigger different emotional responses in a person. The same is true for

photography but there are very few photographers who are aware of this fact. Color has even been responsible for bringing to mind long forgotten memories for certain moments and people in the past. If your photograph contains the perfect balance of color along with a sturdy composition then it will be a literal window into the past. In addition to all that the light in your photos can speak for you. It can suggest things like time of day, mood, and it can even tell stories. It can also do practical things like guide the eye around an image, reveal hidden textures, act as the main subject of the image, or help to emphasize a subject. In order to do amazing things with your camera you must first properly understand the game of lights and colors in the world of photography. Master all the rules and you will ultimately emerge as a grandmaster of the arena. Don’t just envy someone on the street just because they have a bigger, more expensive camera. Trust me, it’s not the camera, it’s the photographer that makes all the difference. Well photographers that’s all for today on this issue of the Pages but month I’ll be back with more in-depth information and guidelines on light and color. But in the meantime, don’t just sit around. Pick up your camera, wander outside and keep clicking. Also send in your photographs to me at amiya.pages@gmail.com. Share your views with me or any problems you are facing. As an added bonus, if your pictures are that good, they will be printed on our next issue. So get it then.

Manik Bandopadhyay

While the prime proponent of

scientific suffix Karl Marx talked about her beauty Realizing the importance of rules. Manik carefully read Marx and Engels and became a Marxist. He became an active politician of Marxism by joining the Communist Party of India in 1944. But he regretted being part of the increasingly hollow and tyrannical organization the Communist Party, later in his life. Manik Bandopadhay was born on 19 May 1908 in a small town called Dumka in the district of Santal Parganas in the state of Bihar in India. His real name was Prabodh Kumar Bandhopaddhay. His pen name was derived from his pet name 'Manik'. His father Harihar was a government official who travelled across undivided Bengal in connection with his job. This gave Manik to experience life and living of people in different parts of Bengal in his early life. Since his childhood Manik was carefree and adventurous. And indeed, he had a sensitive mind. He lost his mother on 28 May 1924 when he was only sixteen and this bereavement left a deep mark in his psyche. After his mother's death, Manik became reckless and his ties with family grew thin.

LITERATURE

Book Writer

Manik Bandopadhyay We all know him for his writing its true. Speacially the students khow his name for his one of the best work “Padma Nodir Majhi. Manik Bandopadhyay's writing was inspired by both Marxian philosophy and Freudian philosophy - which are quite contrasting in nature. His writing stands in stark contrast to that of other contemporary luminaries like Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay who portrayed life in rural Bengal in a gentle, lyrical light. Although he had some common grounds with Tarashankar Bandopadhyay, he distinguished himself with profound and rational analysis of the lives of ordinary people. Manik's writing dealt with the pettiness and wretchedness of existence in the context of rural Bengal. His primary concern was the dark alleyways of the human mind, even among the supposedly simple village folk, and not the serene beauty of nature that was always in the background in his novels. In Putulnacher Itikatha he took on rather savagely the hypocrisy in villages: An elderly couple are canonized as saints after committing morphine-induced suicide; the daughter of one of the village elders gets married off to a wealthy businessman in Kolkata who treats her as a concubine ... she gets hooked to alcohol and returns home a shadow of her former self. However, the people around her keep pretending that nothing untoward has

happened. Numerous other examples abound. Once while he was with his friends in their college canteen, one of them asked him if he could publish a story in the magazine Bichitra. The would-be novelist replied that his first story would be good enough for the purpose. At that time, Bichitra was a leading periodical which carried stories only by eminent authors. Manik walked into the office of the periodical and dropped the story "Atashimami (Aunt Atashi)" in their letter box. At the end of the story he signed off as Manik Bandhopadhay. After four months, publication of the story (in 1928) created sensation in the literary circles of Bengal and, from then on, the nom de plume stuck. Manik Bandopadhyayis one of the greatest writer of Bengali literature and considered to many as the master of modern Bengali story telling. He had only 36 novels and 177 short stories in his short life of 48 years. His best works are Putul Nacher Itikotha, Padma Nodir Majhi, Shahartali , Chatushkone and many more. His stories and novels were published in literary magazines of the then Bengal. They included Bichitra, Bangasree, Purbasha, AnandaBazaar Patrika, Jugantor, Satyajug, Probashi, Desh, Chaturanga, NoroNari, Notun Jiban, Bosumati, Golp-Bharati, Mouchak, Pathshala, Rang-Mashal, NoboShakti, Swadhinata, Agami, Kalantar, Parichaya, Notun Sahitya, Diganta, Sanskriti, Mukhopotro, Provati, Ononnya, Ultorath, Elomelo, Bharatbarsha, Modhyabitta, Sharodi, Sonar

Bangla, Agami, Ononya, Krishak, Purnima, Rupantar and Swaraj. Manik published as many as 57 volumes. He also wrote poetry, but not much is heard about his poems. He Wrote for all, He wrote simple, He write gorgeous.

The

word

Bansuri (Bamboo Flute) is actually the conjunction of two words - Baans (bamboo) and Sur (musical note). Some of the finest bamboo used in making Bansuris today comes from mostly the north eastern part of India (such as Assam) and the south. Other places such as Hawaii are also sources of suitable bamboo that fulfill the requirement of having long section between nodes of the bamboo. This simple bamboo flute is usually played with just 6 or 7 holes (sometimes a 7th hole with the right hand pinkie). The open holes allow for a great variation of expression in terms of intonation (Indian music uses many microtones) and also the gliding effects and other effects that imitate the voice and other instruments.

other musical instruments it is not known who invented the flute, where exactly it was invented and when it was invented. But legends say that during the Dapor era of Hinduism, Lord Krishna played the flute. He used to play the flute while doing ‘Lila’, the Dance of Devine Love. Therefore traditionally god Krishna is considered to be the master of the instrument. Long before this, Prophet Musa (AS) is said to play a flute with seven holes (According to ‘Chhotoder Sa,Re, Ga, Ma.’ By Munshi Rois Uddin). Bangladesh is not far behind from the impact of Bansuri. At present stage its demand is very high as an instrumental music especially for classical music. Day by day the ratio flute player is increasing. Some of the musical

WE TELL Rasedul Islam Lalin

To understand better urban

poverty in Bangladesh, the Urban Partnerships for Poverty Reduction (UPPR) project has launched the ‘We Tell’ photo project, a special initiative to highlight the experiences of girls and women in the slums of Bangladesh. An exhibition of photos from the project has been opened on 19 May at the Institute for Asian Creatives (IAC), Road 36, House 9, Dhaka -1212. (Behind Westin). The show has opened from 19-21 May 2014, 11am-8pm. Thirty girls and women from three slums in Tongi, Khulna and Naogaon were asked to be part of the project. They were provided with digital cameras and were tutored by professional photographer Emdadul Islam Bitu, a specialist in working with poor and vulnerable communities. Together, the participants learnt how to use the cameras and to capture images that would tell the story of their lives and those of their communities. This included standalone images and photo essays. The professional photographer then supported the girls and women to edit and caption their photographs. The results of We Tell are intimate and striking portraits of families and communities at work and play. Through over 1,000 pictures, the participants give a deeply personal tour of their lives. So often photographed from the perspective of outsiders, these photos invite us to see slums through the eyes of its residents. We Tell presents the women with a unique opportunity to share their life experiences with a wider audience. This exhibition shares 68 photographs which give a new insight into the realities of life in a poor urban settlement through the perspective of women who live there. The thirty participants of the We Tell has presented at the opening event on 19 May at 1730hrs. They toured the attendees through their work, giving more insights on why they chose to photograph the respective subjects and their intended message to the public.

MAY DAY Rasedul Islam Lalin

Celebrated around the world, May Day or Labor Day, is an opportunity to display solidarity with workers around the world. In Bangladesh, every year May Day is observed and commemorated in our country through many ceremonies, meetings, seminars and promises. The celebrations are just a reminder of the history behind May Day. Over time, the promising garment sector of our country has emerged, making garments workers the focal point of May Day discussions. However, once this national holiday is over, the promises made throughout the day gradually begin to disappear.

‘‘Let us vow to

extend our helping hands to the labourers of our country to provide them with economic emancipation and social security.

‘‘

It is true that financial constraints limit both the owners and the workers from meeting each others’ demands. To counter this problem, there should be a reasonable negotiation between both these entities. Although there are several labour and factory laws, they are only evident in theory but not in practice. Let us vow to extend our helping hands to the labourers of our country to provide them with economic emancipation and social security.

DEVELOPING BANGLADESH History of RMG

Labors of the Western Countries organized themselves in such a manner which helped them to form trade unions in 1950s. This and other relevant forms of transformation gave workers greater rights including higher pay; which had increased the cost of production. Retailers started finding places where the cost of production was lower. Developing countries like Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea presented themselves as good destinations for relocations because they had open economic policies and had non-unionized and highly organized labor force that could manufacture high quality products at much cheaper rate. Multi Fiber Agreement (MFA) allowed developed countries to impose quotas on countries that exported at a higher rate than the bilateral agreements. For these restrictions, producers started searching for countries that were outside the umbrella of quotas and had cheap labor. This is when Bangladesh started receiving investment in the RMG sector. In the early 1980s, some Bangladeshis received free training from Korean Daewoo Company. After these workers came back to Bangladesh, many of them broke ties with the factory they were working for and started their own factories. RMG overview in BD Readymade garment is the main sector of foreign earnings in Bangladesh. There are about 5,000 garment companies in the country. More than 75% of the foreign earnings are coming from this sector. About 400,000 workers are working in this sector of which 90% are women. The economy of Bangladesh is largely dependent on agriculture. However, in recent years, the Ready –Made Garments (RMG) sector has emerged as the biggest earner of foreign currency. The RMG sector has experienced an exponential growth since the 1980s. The sector contributes significantly to the GDP. It also provides employment to around 4.2 million Bangladeshis. An overwhelming number of workers in this sector are women. This has affected the social status of many women coming from low income families. Bangladesh is now under challenge of the 21st century's global business environment especially in the arena of Ready Made Garment (RMG) sectors. It is a matter of great pleasure that the 80% (Including Woven & Knitwear) of the country's export is from RMG sector although Bangladesh is a land of agriculture but RMG sector is going to be the main drivers of national economy in future. The achievement of country's

Garment sector is the largest employer of women in Bangladesh. The garment sector has provided employment opportunities to women from the rural areas that previously did not have any opportunity to be part of the formal workforce. This has given women the chance to be financially independent and have a voice in the family because now they contribute financially. However, the women workers are facing many problems. Most women come from low income families. Low wage of women workers and their compliance have enabled the industry to compete with the world market. Women are paid far less than men mainly due to their lack education. Women are reluctant to unionize because factory owners threaten to fire them.. Even though trade unionization is banned inside the Export processing Zones (EPZ), the working environment is better than that of the majority of garment factories that operate outside the EPZs. But, pressure from buyers to abide by labor codes has enabled factories to maintain satisfactory working conditions. In recent times, garment workers have protested against their low wages. The firsts protests broke out in 2006, and since then, there have been periodic protests by the workers .This has forced the government to increase minimum wages of workers.

stays, collarbones and cartons are the major garment accessories produced in Bangladesh. Many small and medium accessory industries have grown here over the years, particularly to meet high demand from low-end garment makers. The accessory market is dominated by multinational companies operating in Bangladesh, because in majority cases, garment buyers prefer accessories from them over the locally available items, now it is time for the Bangladeshi Merchandiser to introduce more local accessories manufacturer to show their expertise to the buyers.

“

In addition to its economic contribution, the expansion of the RMG industry has caused noticeable social changes by

bringing more than 1.12 million women into labor force. Regular earning enables a large number of the garment workers to go for some savings. Workers investments on family pension schemes etc. create savings.

Savings

Regular earning enables a large number of the garment workers to go for some savings. Workers investments on family pension schemes etc. create savings. A BIDS survey conducted in the early 1990s found that 21 percent of both male and female workers aged 15 years and above had their own bank accounts. A higher proportion of workers (30percent) had bank accounts in the EPZ. Findings showed that women are on average better savers than men and save about 7.6 percent of their otherwise small income.

RMG Future

The RMG sector is expected to grow despite the global financial crisis. As China is finding it challenging to make textile and foot wear items at cheap price, due to rising labor costs, many foreign investors, are coming to Bangladesh to take advantage of the low labor cost. Even now for the readymade garments most of the manufacturer need to bring all the accessories from abroad, which is very costly. Now they are using locally produced accessories with the required quality. Zippers, buttons, labels, hooks, hangers, elastic bands, thread, backboards, butterfly pins, clips, collar

DESTINY

Venus will emerge from the shadow of your sign on 3rd May to reappear in full radiance and revive your love-life ARIES

in line with your inclinations of the day (or month?), but this won't be without tension! Whilst this delightful planet will restore some colour to your life, with a desire to make an impression, love and be loved, occupying centre stage, friend Aries, there's no guarantee that the other players in your chart will allow her to do as she pleases. They could stand in the way of her quest for enjoyment, happiness and pleasure at the very least! May 3 looks to be sweet, with soft voices and fuzzy affection. You don't usually neglect yourself, but the May 14 Full Moon reminds you to pay more attention to the small, less exciting details of daily life. Get more organized, find those misplaced documents, and eat more healthfully. The weekend of May 24 could get rocky. Don't get bent out of shape if someone springs a surprise bigger than yours. The New Moon on May 28 is intense. You might get on people's nerves if you expect them to be equally intense. Focus on your own issues and cut others some slack.

T

he Sun will reinforce your self-assurance and your desire to defend your position on all fronts, forcing you out of your entrenched position to take a few risks to assert your identity and leave the sidelines to get yourself noticed! That's true, but Saturn will still be controlling the area of your chart devoted to your relationships with others, your partner in particular, and will tend to channel your potential eruptions considerably. Under the “great taskmaster of the zodiac, letting yourself go excessively will be out of the question. Instead, it will be about sizing and evaluating the quality of your feelings in connection with your partner. You will therefore, friend Taurus, have to face the reality of communicating with the person who is important to you!

TAURUS

Mother's Day on May 11 could be a high-energy day. Be gracious, enjoy the good, and let others get hyper. The Full Moon on May 14 impacts your partnerships and love life. Saturn lurking nearby suggests you'll make an effort to respect others and treat them the way you want to be treated. The New Moon on May 28 could affect your finances and possessions. Don't be surprised if people want to give you things. Memorial Day weekend looks to be lavish, with good food, fun, and your favorite companions. Save your best recipes and most charming quips for that day.

T

here's no way in May that you will be able to avoid a certain frustration in connection with a crisis which will also combine love and self-interest. If you work with your other half, make sure you separate your roles and above all, protect your private life! At the moment, you won't lack determination or enthusiasm, but you won't be entirely your own master and could from time to time cross the line. With a boost from Mars, who has been GEMINI boosting your libido since last December, as well as your desire to free up your life force to love, create and optimise your performances (be careful of overdoing the determination to impose your whims on your other half) unreservedly, you will be in great danger, friend Gemini, of hurtling into conflicts in May. These will raise your hackles, put you in opposition to your other half and lead you into gridlock. You might feel a little wired as the month starts, but nerves should settle down by the end of May 2. If your mind shifts into overdrive on May 7, stay focused and don't turn into a chatterbox. The May 14 Full Moon shines for you in a secret way. Be prudent, behave well, and respect the positions of others or you could briefly turn into your own worst enemy. The May 28 New Moon is the time to make healthy changes to eat, rest, exercise, and simply be better to yourself in the long term. Look for an "ah ha" moment on May 30.

Some

will be tempted to take refuge in secret relationships to satisfy their desires and others will plead their case by using cunning arguments and building strategies to keep everyone happy. From the 21st, it would be better to take a step back to consider the unrest around you. You will soon have a clear idea of your priorities and choose to calm things down, reassuring your other half by concentrating on satisfying his/her need for intimacy and genuine feelings in particular.

CANCER

Emotions could be near the surface during the first weekend of the month. Have fun, be sociable, and don't take everything so personally. The May 14 Full Moon could rattle your social life or a group or association. Listen and at least pretend to take seriously what people say, even if you know it may all be smoke. The New Moon on May 28 gives you the chance to get more creative and blow off some steam in a flashier way. Do something to make your heart happy. The next day something puzzling may suddenly begin to make sense.

upiter will be biding his time in the shadow of your sign and will involve you much more in preparing for your next come-back in full radiance, friend Leo, (from mid-July) than arguing endlessly, with a risk of being backed into a corner. This would deprive you of your enthusiasm and the resources you will need so much to put up with a family atmosphere which will drag you down and force you assert your presence, in order to assume some heavy responsibilities and handle your family connections with as great an awareness as possible. This will be an ordeal which will drag on at length and more or less hold you over a barrel, given that you will be occupied in guaranteeing the security of those close to you and structuring, or restructuring, the foundations of your clan. These will have been undermined by, which will end up restricting your margins of manoeuvre and making you forget that you too have a right to happiness, friend Leo, and deserve to be loved and think of your own personal happiness. Prepare for this and take the opportunity seriously. You have a chance to assume more responsibility and authority. You may be chattier and more willing to try new things after May 20. The New Moon at the end of the month brings things closer to home. Reach out and keep in touch with family and old friends.

careful then to control your reactions (instincts?) and not let yourself be led into conflicts, which will partly be due to the excessively high pressure you are exerting (or undergoing) in material matters. Don't let any dissension degenerate into a risk of the slightest spark turning into a veritable forest fire, which would be difficult to put out. Don't for example develop plans which are too extravagant or could seem to threaten your private life, friend Virgo, and keep a sense of proportion in all circumstances. This won't be very easy under the guidance of a fiery and rather aggressive Mars, who will push you into action, sometimes just to provoke those you deal with. Until the 21st, the Sun will fortunately help to raise the level of debate and keep you a step ahead regarding your current tendency to force the issue! You might be more energized, able to perform better, and thinking more clearly on May 7 and May 8. Don't let this slip away. The May 14 Full Moon could take you places, some very far away. It could be physical or virtual. If you need a serious getaway, this might be the trigger. An old favorite fantasy or bit of wishful thinking may come to an end on May 21. On the May 28 New Moon, expect to spend more time or money with friends, doing entertaining or even educational and uplifting activities. Think art, movies, or music.

LIBRA

n May, you will try hard to hold out an olive branch and attempt to establish a closer relationship with your partner, but your tone won't necessarily be appreciated, friend Libra, and in spite of the Venusian touch, which should help you to smooth things over from the 3rd, you will find it difficult to deal with the desire of your other half to take to his/her heels and your desire to take drastic action to improve the atmosphere and start afresh on a better basis. Sometimes feel as if you are unsettled in your emotions, at work and in romance? You can expect to wait until the end of the month to come up with remedies (not necessarily definitive ones!) and begin to glimpse a way out that would augur well for your more specific problems and anxieties! Your natural diplomatic and peacekeeping talents could come in handy on the weekend of Mother's Day, starting Saturday May 10. At the Full Moon of May 14 you could become involved in the responsibilities of someone else. Remember to respect available resources (like time and energy). Respect boundaries, too, especially your own. On May 19 you might get impatient to start something that's been on hold, but you know how to control yourself. The New Moon on May 28 gives you a fresh look at money matters and any finances that need attention. Don't hesitate to communicate, explain yourself, or ask questions.

Watch

out for misunderstandings which could drag you down and make you prey to obsessive thoughts, which won't really enable you to judge situations lucidly or the responses you need to make to re-establish the equilibrium you so need. Avoid resisting the pressure around you too much. It would be better to let go (or at least a little), friend Scorpio, and trust in the combined forces of Jupiter and Saturn, who, in their solidarity with your emotional and spiritual growth, should help you to overcome your anxieties around the 24th and take a much-needed step back to sort out your priorities. In May (and this has been the case since autumn 2012) it will be stability, security and truth that you will really need! Take a deep breath, smile, and let Mother's Day be pleasant for everyone. Be proactive, volunteer to help, and let your family appreciate and love you. The Full Moon on May 14 belongs to you. Do something that deepens and strengthens you, brings you fulfillment, and fine-tunes how you want the world to see and deal with you. May 19 and May 20 are the opening days of a more active period for you. Things will accelerate slowly, so get prepared. Love, sex, and romance may blur at the New Moon on May 28 and could make a relationship even more complicated.

A daily grind which will be rather difficult to handle and where misunderstandings and lack of comprehension

will build up, despite a profound desire to have a good time, make the most of things and enjoy the present from the 3rd, when Venus will move into the area of your chart devoted to your love-life (until the 29th). Desire will be there in abundance but there will be palpable tension, due to recurring frustration stopping you STGITTARIUS from doing what you would really like in May, friend Sagittarius, or at least standing in the way of your dynamic plans! Mars has continued to boost your thirst to open up new horizons since last December and will now grant you the energy to win in your combats, but the present astral configuration, still full of electricity, will force you to take a clearer stance with regard to your other half and deal with annoying subjects, in order to be able to break the deadlock! lightweight romance could turn super serious at the May 14 Full Moon. Or you might suddenly crave more attention than you've ever wanted before. Keep a grip on your heart and have pity on any partners. May 15 finds you enthusiastic and up for just about anything. Be safe, though. The weekend of May 24 promises some quality time with people you already enjoy and admire. Live big (but not too big) and have fun. The New Moon on May 28 lets you slip out of the spotlight and into the shadows. It's harder for people to interfere if they can't see you.

A

desire to love and bring your desires to fruition up until the 21st? You will be somewhat stopped in your tracks by Saturn, who will be giving shape to your far-reaching plans slowly but surely, friend Capricorn, but won't really allow you to have too light-hearted an approach to events and could even stand in the way of opportunities to have a good time! This will especially be the case at the beginning of the month, when he will seem to want to oppose your dearest wishes. You also won't be at bay from misunderstandings or lack of comprehension, which will cause trouble between you and your other half, despite an evident determination to keep things calm and smooth things over, notably on the family front, where Venus will play go-between and do her utmost to plead your cause and improve the quality of your relations with both your loved-one and those close to you! The Full Moon on May 14 encourages you to get serious about taking better care of yourself. You don't have to be paranoid or timid about it. Be smart and treat yourself better. The weekend of May 17 could be tense, but such anxieties are usually imaginary. Stay calm and real and let it pass. On the weekend of May 24 you get the respect you deserve but usually feel you don't get. For the May 28 New Moon, you might want to change up or freshen your social crowd, fade out of a stale group,

ortunately, from the 7th, Mercury is going to lighten the atmosphere by honing your desires and awakening your libido! You will flit around and seduce all and sundry, but will probably think more about having a good time and living life to the full than dreaming about the future! Surprising and intoxicating, harmless flirting and a wonderful desire to do whatever you want, despite pressure from Saturn, who will continue to make AQUARIUS demands on both you (especially in your social life) and those around you, who will be asking too much for your liking! Since December 2013, you have been hoping to broaden your horizons, push back the boundaries and try something else, in a different way or in a different place? The Full Moon on May 14 is your big chance to start doing something you've always wanted to do but have let people talk you out of doing. You'll find sympathetic friends to play with you. May 19 through May 21 should be more comfortable, with people being less annoying you can get on with your work and the inspiration can flow. The New Moon on May 28 shines on your career or workplace. Stay alert for a new assignment or chance to sound out co-workers about a difficult or confusing situation that is on the verge of being corrected.

You

will therefore have to put up with a few qualms in May and be patient (for the first fortnight), before the atmosphere feels warmer. However, no worries, you will still be the darling of the cosmos, friend Pisces, should manage to anchor down a recent relationship, or make a union close to your heart longer-lasting. Those who are still hesitant to commit (or at least to decide what they really expect from a relationship), say what are the most important qualities for them and what they are looking for in order to get things established, should stop trying to run with the hare and hunt with the hounds! From the 21st, all your attention will be taken up by keeping things running smoothly at home and those in your immediate family, who will be demanding. The Full Moon on May 14 blazes away on family and home affairs. Achieve closure in an uncomfortable situation, clear up some long-lasting confusion, or finish a big domestic project. May 21 and May 22 are tailored for you to plug in your feelings and do things that mean a lot to you. At the New Moon on May 28 you might want to finally start to learn a new skill, speak a new language, or just dream about buying a ticket to Tahiti. May 31 could be outrageously lucky.
