A MESSAGE FROM

Jason Lopez Head of School Dear Pegasus Community,

While the 2020-2021 school year has been filled with uncertainty, the year provided an opportunity for flexibility and creativity as we navigated through challenging times. With our students at the center, our families and staff worked together, supporting one another through each challenge by showing grit and great fortitude. I am grateful to our community for the overwhelming support we received during this time. The strong foundation we have built over the last 37 years gave us the confidence that we could get through this together. Though the world seems to face new struggles daily, I am simply awestruck by the many challenges-turned-opportunities here at Pegasus. In a year when many schools struggled with spacing, Pegasus opened the Kazu Fukuda Science and Technology Building at a perfect time for our children and teachers to make good use out of our new spacious and modern facilities. We moved quickly and repurposed each area to meet social distancing requirements which allowed the school to remain open and fully functional when others could not. Our return to more regular programming this year allowed us to fully appreciate the use of both our 6

THE PEGASUS SCHOOL

new and repurposed spaces, all with your support, understanding, and collaboration. Communication between school and families increased in frequency as we provided transparency in our planning and decisions. Every decision made by the school continued to reflect our priorities of providing the best education program in a safe environment. Last year warranted many changes, and if anything, schools have been at the forefront during the COVID-19 pandemic. I would like to take a moment to thank all of our faculty and staff who worked tirelessly through these challenging times. We are grateful to our families for their trust and cooperation throughout all the changes last year. Once again, Pegasus achieves a different narrative than most in the education community, in that their conversations are one of recovery and how to make up for a lost year. At Pegasus, we embrace opportunities to soar to new heights and we thank you for coming along with us on this journey. We will continue to strive to find new ways to educate more fully, to communicate more efficiently, and to think and act with more awareness, more heart, and a greater understanding of our community’s needs. Thank you for contributing your time, your energy, and your resources to make our year a success. Pegasus continues to innovate, embracing all the possibilities that technology makes possible, and lean into the discomfort of trying new things… just as we ask of our students. Perhaps the best examples are the many hybrid offerings that are now available for parents, from parent-education opportunities, to virtual attendance at Community Gatherings, and events like the Halloween Parade, all of which has

added safety and convenience for our cherished parent community. This past year is perfectly expressed by the words of Benjamin Disreali, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, “What we anticipate seldom occurs: but what we least expect generally happens.” Together, we overcame another year of unanticipated challenges, and together we will soar. Thank you for your consistent partnership and numerous contributions to our Pegasus Community. Sincerely,

Jason Lopez Head of School

A MESSAGE FROM

Diem-Trang Dang Board Chair Dear Pegasus Community,

Few would deny that this past year brought challenges to schools across the nation. It also brought opportunities for leadership in the face of adversity. Defined by a strong sense of community, resilience, and stewardship, The Pegasus School’s spirit prevailed amidst these circumstances. Prioritizing what was best for the Pegasus community, Head of School Jason Lopez, the Administrative team, and Nurse Karen Hurst made decisions that adapted the school to the changing landscape of public health guidance. Their decisions positioned Pegasus to meet the needs of families who wanted their children to learn in-person or virtually. They also answered the needs of employees who had school-aged children who were required to learn virtually at other schools. While remaining faithful to Pegasus values and the Mission, their actions better equipped the school to move forward in the year. Another critical success factor was the power of faculty and staff to advance the Mission. Their ability to engage bright minds and attend to the social and emotional well-being of students is what distinguishes them. After 8

THE PEGASUS SCHOOL

taking stock of their strengths, they acquired new skills along with additional equipment to redefine teaching at Pegasus. They faced the intensity of instructing in a hybrid classroom with perseverance, creativity, collaboration, empathy, and courage. Thanks to faculty, staff, and administration’s resolve, Pegasus students received the best quality independent school education in Orange County and for that I am most grateful. This past year Pegasus graduated a resilient class of eighth grade students with diverse backgrounds and unique interests. They matriculated to 19 different schools. Yet, what united them was their character traits and community values, and the memories they made learning together and preparing for high school. The Class of 2021 are now part of a growing legacy of Pegasus alumni who are capable of accomplishing great things. I look forward to hearing about their achievements in the years ahead. The year was also a tribute to the commitment of the Pegasus community to champion the Mission in a time of need by pledging financial resources and volunteering time and expertise. The Annual Fund, Annual Gala, and Capital Campaign attained high levels of support directly making an impact on the people and programs at Pegasus. The Parent Teacher Organization hosted numerous PEGLove events for employees and they invited wellknown experts to provide parent education. The Board of Trustees remained steadfast in safeguarding the Mission, preserving the school’s ethos, and ensuring a robust and sustainable future. I am profoundly appreciative and grateful for the philanthropic gifts and service from this vibrant community. They epitomize the Pegasus spirit. In the continuing effort to uphold the core values of the Pegasus Mission, the Board adopted a statement that properly expressed its position on

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice. This uniquely Pegasus statement puts into writing what was already part of the school culture. The guiding principles for this work was respect, compassion, confidence, kindness, and the belief that diverse perspectives lead to a stronger academic community. The Pegasus community has emerged more resilient, resourceful, and stronger after this historic year. The Pegasus School is poised to respond to new challenges and opportunities as they arise and will remain watchful in today’s changing environment. It is my honor to present The Pegasus School’s Philanthropy Report and I hope you will be filled with pride in what the Pegasus community has accomplished. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, thank you for your support. Sincerely,

Diem-Trang Dang Board Chair

A MESSAGE FROM

Kristen Perlmutter PTO President Dear Pegasus Community,

The 2020-2021 school year proved to be a challenging year, but it was a year in which I was proud to be PTO president. Despite the obstacles we faced, the PTO pivoted and worked diligently to continue to support the faculty and staff and to help build community morale in the face of the Pandemic. Many of our typical school events that support community and connection could not take place due to Covid protocols and the parent volunteer opportunities were limited, but the PTO found ways to safely honor our deserving teachers and staff. By providing our teachers with meals to enjoy on campus or to take home, gifting stress relief items, on top of providing the faculty with a morning treat pick-me-ups, we had the teachers in mind throughout the entire school year. It was not an easy time to be an educator and we made every effort to show our appreciation and gratitude for the extra hard work that each staff member demonstrated.

34

THE PEGASUS SCHOOL

Our PegServe events took place in the classroom, but students were still able to make a difference in the local community with hands on activities that directly benefited both Operation Warm Wishes and our local front line workers. The PTO worked behind the scenes to both research, strategize, and organize these community service events. From collecting warm coats to books for a neighboring school in need, as always, the Pegasus community demonstrated their generosity and compassion. PegTalks, our popular parent education series continued despite the obstacles and adjusted to virtual talks. We were very fortunate to welcome back Michele Borba who discussed her new book, Thrivers with our community. The PTO was thrilled to offer Dr. Alison Briscoe Smith as a virtual speaker on how to speak to our children about race. This discussion was timely as it was followed by the Pegasus Board’s introduction of our school’s first DEIJ statement. I am so grateful to be a part of the Pegasus community. I thank you for all of your support and involvement this past year. Thank you to all of the volunteers who worked so hard for the PTO behind the scenes. I also want to offer a special thank you to those who support the Annual Fund. We would not be here if it were not for your “Give to Great” contributions. With Gratitude,

Kristen Perlmutter 2020-2021 PTO President
