With children in the school system, one of her goals is advocating keeping rural schools open. In 2016, Taylor was a member of the Upper Canada District School Board's school closure accommodation review panel but quit citing the process as highly flawed. She said an NDP government can change that. "Many of the Liberal and PC governments have left their mark on rural Ontario. Funding levels have dropped, there are school closure threats, underserviced hospitals and underappreciated staff," she said, noting that another party goal is to put Hydro One back into the public's hands. "We have a clear, fully costed plan and deliberate consideration has been given to you, the farmers, the backbone of rural Ontario," Taylor added. "I want to learn from you, about what your needs are, the barriers you face in your business and how the government in Ontario can help you prosper." Having won re-election in 2011 and 2014, Clark said it's time there was a provincial government that cared for farmers and rural Ontario and looked at issues with a "rural lens."

The Leeds County and Grenville Federations of Agriculture held a provincial all-candidates meeting May 10 at the Toledo legion. The audience heard from three candidates vying for the Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands-Rideau Lakes MPP spot. From left: Liberal David Henderson, NDP's Michelle Taylor and PC incumbent Steve Clark. "I agree with the OFA. Agriculture and rural Ontario hold the key to prosperity and rural growth," he stated. He highlighted the need for action and the elimination of red tape to allow farmers to do the jobs they need to do on their properties. "I spent a long time working with the Farmersville Abattoir and there was so much red tape that the delay could have cost the whole project," Clark explained, noting the issue surrounded water testing. The Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit had completed the testing but the ministry wanted it done again. "We need to look at red tape and listen to farmers. We need a government that's responsive," he continued. Henderson, who has taken a leave of absence from his role as

mayor of Brockville to run in the upcoming election, said that Ontario is leading the world in growth and low unemployment numbers, but the same can't be said for the rural areas of the province. "We need services. We're an aging community, older than the provincial average," he said. " ... This province is one of the richest in the world and that equity has to be shared. It has to be across the board." "We're coming up to a fork in the road and we have to watch what direction we take," Henderson cautioned.

Taylor said the NDP's vision of prosperity begins with the ensuring all citizens have access to rural broadband, stopping school closures and improving health and dental care for rural residents. "We also need to look at farmers as partners and develop a mutually beneficial plan that addresses all of this," she stated. Other issues raised were the expected legalization of marijuana this summer, as well the federal government's decision to remove dairy as a main source of protein in Canada's Food Guide and how candidates' will influence a change of mind. "I think we should pressure them (federal government) to leave dairy in there," noted Taylor, who was shocked to hear about the proposed change. Clark said he had heard this debate a few weeks ago at an agricultural meeting in Roebuck.

Take a road trip into the past on the McDonald's Corner Country Tour. Ankaret Dean, proprietor of the Lanark Highlands Basketry Museum, and Coral Nault, Brooke Valley, have created a map guiding visitors on a circular tour of 11 historical sites from McDonald's Corners to Watsons Corners and around Dalhousie Lake. "I noticed that visitors to the Lanark Highlands Basketry Museum were interested in stories of bygone days," said Dean. "So I teamed up with Coral Nault to show them where to find them. Carol made a beautiful hand drawn map." Nault illustrated each of the 11 sites with a small drawing and Dean wrote a story explaining the historical significance. There are

suggested activities for all four seasons. The McDonald's Corners Country Tour map will be launched at the opening of the Lanark Highlands Basketry Muse-

um on May 26. It will be available online at mcdonaldscornerscountrytour.ca and as a printed brochure at local retail outlets and tourism venues. The museum will be of-

fering workshops for most Saturdays during the summer. Upstairs in the loft there is a new exhibition showcasing basketry jewelry, as well as a show of new acquisitions.

Former MP Paul Dick remembered

TARA GESNER tgesner@metroland.com A Celebration of Life was held for former Progressive Conservative MP Paul Dick on May 11, taking place at the Britannia Yacht Club in Ottawa. According to a statement by family, Dick, 77, died of a heart attack at home on May 2. Dick was first elected to the House of Commons in 1972, representing the former Lanark-Renfrew-Carleton riding. Over the next 21 years, he was re-elected five times, holding various cabinet positions. Ultimately, in the redistributed riding of Lanark-Carleton, Dick was defeated in 1993 by Liberal Ian Murray. This general election saw the Progressive Conservatives reduced to two seats. Remembered On May 4, former politician and current Children's

Hospital of Eastern Ontario president and chief executive officer Alex Munter posted the following on Twitter: "Sad to hear about the death of Paul Dick, Kanata's MP as I was growing up. I later worked with him and appreciated his candid, practical and accessible approach. He will be well remembered." Progressive Conservative MPP for Nepean-Carleton Lisa MacLeod offered her condolences to Dick's family on social media, and she noted he served with "distinction" for five terms. Dick died the same day as Leeds-Grenville, Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes MP Gord Brown, another long-serving Progressive Conservative. Brown also had a heart attack, succumbing in his Parliament Hill office. "Eastern Ontario has lost another good one," MacLeod noted.

During a meeting of Lanark County council on May 9, Warden John Fenik called for a moment of silence to honour Dick, with chief administrative officer Kurt Greaves later commenting on the former MP's lengthy career. "Our condolences to his family," Greaves stated. He noted the former MP was "well regarded as an intelligent, hard working cabinet minister who loyally served the people of Lanark County from 1972 to 1993." The Canadian flag was also flown at half-staff at the county building in Perth. From Kapuskasing, Ont., Dick was a lawyer by profession. After attending Western University, he earned a law degree from the University of New Brunswick. Dick was called to the bar in 1969. Wife Pierrette Cassista and sons Wyatt and Andrew Dick, along with other family survive him.

Happy Royal Wedding week It’s a fairy tale of which young girls might dream. Meeting the man of her dreams, falling in love and he not only treats her like a princess but he is a reallife prince charming! On May 19 Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will be wed at St. George’s Chapel on the grounds of Windsor Castle. The pre-game show (or pre-wedding coverage) will start at 4 a.m. on most major North American broadcast networks and the wedding is set to start at 7 a.m. Now what does this all mean for the average Canadian? Let’s not forget Canada is a constitutional monarchy and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, is Queen of Canada and Canada’s Head of State. It is highly unlikely, as sixth in the line of succession, that Prince Harry will ever be crowned the King of England. Let’s give the job to his father who has been waiting, patiently for the job for decades, first. Prince Harry still had to seek his Granny’s permission to get married and she was kind enough to issue the Instrument of Consent with her signature that was just released on May 13. The role of the Crown in Canada matters, it is more than just ceremonial, it links us to the past and paves a way for our future. The wedding ensures that the British Monarchy will live another day. The big day and the lead up to the nuptials is also sure to be a money-maker with billions of people expected to tune-in worldwide. It is also expected the wedding will be a $500 million boost to the British economy. There will be a ripple effect felt across the pond here as well, as merchandise and souvenirs are popping up. The Royal Canadian Mint is also cashing in on the big day having recently released a $20 silver collector coin (price tag $105) to mark the occasion with the artwork created locally by well-known Westport artist Joel Kimmel. There will be numerous events throughout the area to mark the occasion, including the Royal Wedding Celebration hosted by the Hub Almonte. It starts at 6 a.m. at the Civitan Hall on the big day. In Perth the day will be marked with a high tea at 3 p.m. at Matheson Hall at the Perth Parkside Inn and Spa. And in Arnprior, the party will get started a day early at a Royal Wedding Tea Party at the library starting at 3:30 p.m. All of these local events show that for many in this country, the Royal Wedding matters in Canada. So Pip, pip cheerio, it’s time to pour some tea and get a royal fascinator ready.

She has such control of these dogs in her care, To see them all walking, it's hard not to stare. The miles they put on, in the course of a week, Make them happy and healthy and rather unique. Their behaviour ... outstanding; it's a real joy to see, I'm wondering if ever they stop for a pee? To synchronize THAT would take patience and skill, But I'm betting they've done it; they MUST know the drill!

She has what it takes, and my KUDOS are sent, To her and her dogs, who look so content. As they troop all together, in their unison stride, Obeying their walker, as she walks them with pride. Mother would use every last drop of paint around the house, Mary Cook writes Waste, according to my sister Audrey was a word mother thought was right up there with swearing. Nothing was wasted in our house. Audrey said that is why the gallon of bright green paint mother bought at Scott's Hardware in Renfrew to give the pump its usual spring cleanup, would be used until there wasn't a drop left in the can. First of course, was the pump. Then with a lot of paint left over, the privy door was next, a bright green, with the rest of the little building faded and as drab as a cow plop! Two old kitchen chairs

MARY COOK Column on the back stoop, which were solid pine, were now bright green. Mother never was very fond of pine ... always said she thought it rhymed with poverty ... just about everything in our old log house was pine. Father wasn't too happy about the chairs being painted green, and lamented that they had been pine for three generations, but Mother had paint to use. There was still lots of paint left, so the summer kitchen window sills were the next to get a coat. Mother was going to paint the frames too, but father told her that would

seal the windows until doomsday, so she settled for the sills. You could smell paint clear out to the drive shed, and mother was splattered too ... dabs on her nose and the old white pinny she used to clean out the hen house was just about covered. Mother thought the old swing in the grape arbour could stand a touching up. It was made of wood, and mother tackled it like someone possessed, leaving the seats to the last. Of course, none of us were too happy about the swing getting a coat of paint. It took ages to dry, and that meant none of us could use it, which didn't please my brothers one bit. But mother managed to use up most of the paint, and all that was left was a little dribble in the bottom of the can. She stood in the middle of the yard, looking around her to see what she could dab up.

Father had backed the old Model T out of the garage ... only three of the fenders matched, and he could see mother looking at the odd one father had picked up at Thacker's Garage in Renfrew when we lost one in a ditch on the way in to town one day. Father could read mother like a book. He knew what she was thinking. Well, before you could say "Jack Robinson" he was behind the wheel and out the gate and onto the lane and yelled, "have to get some nails at Briscoe's General Store." We never knew if mother thought she could use up the last of the paint on the fender. But she settled for painting the two poles that held up the clothesline. Audrey said she would bet her last dollar we were the only ones in the entire County of Renfrew with bright green clothesline poles. Emerson said he was mighty glad the privy was hidden behind a cluster of

cedar trees. The swing never did look like the rest of the targets mother attacked with the paint brush ... the old boards soaked up the paint like a sponge, but at least it took the last bit out of the

Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority – Our Story, 50 Years In The Making Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority is pleased to be celebrating our golden milestone this year. Since inception in 1968, it has been the MVCA mission to assume a leadership role in the conservation, enhancement and development of the Mississippi Valley by way of watershed planning, integrated resource management programs, and conservation awareness. We have protected hundreds of metres of shoreline and thousands of homes from flooding and erosion. We have educated more than 100,000 young people about the importance of conserving our environment and preserving our heritage. We have mobilized thousands of volunteers, and partnered with thousands of organizations and individuals to implement projects aimed at creating a healthy and more sustainable community: a place where people want to live, work and invest. The Beginning Following the formation of a conservation authority in the neighbouring Rideau watershed in 1966, the Almonte Citizens Planning and Housing Committee started inquiries regarding the advantages of a similar organization for the Mississippi area. A number of public meetings were held and a favourable vote of the municipalities concerned resulted in the establishment of the Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority by Order-in-Council 1802/68 dated May 2, 1968, “with jurisdiction over the watersheds of the Mississippi River and all other streams entering the Ottawa River between the point where the north-west boundary of the Township of Fitzroy meets the shore of the Ottawa River and the point where the west boundary of the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority meets the shore of the Ottawa River.” Since this time, it has been MVCA’s responsibility under the Provincial Conservation Authorities Act to protect, restore and manage our watersheds for today and tomorrow.

Why Conservation Authorities? The Conservation Authorities Act was created (1946) in response to public concerns about the “unhealthy state” of renewable natural resources in Canada as a result of poor land, water, and forestry practices in the 1930s and 40s as well as erosion and drought concerns. It was recognized that these issues were better dealt with on a watershed basis. Conservation Authorities were created to bridge the gap between municipalities wholly or in part of the watershed boundary. This practical solution to watershed management ensures that the needs of all stakeholders are represented. A particular milestone in Conservation Authority history was the impact of a devastating event – Hurricane Hazel in 1954. This storm mobilized the need for managing Ontario’s watersheds on a regional basis. As a result, after Hurricane Hazel the provincial government amended the Conservation Authorities Act to enable Conservation Authorities to acquire lands for recreation and conservation purposes, and to regulate that land for the safety of the community. MVCA QUICK FACTS • Owns and/or operates three conservation areas: Mill of Kintail, Morris Island, Purdon. • Integrated Watershed Management is the process of managing human activities and natural resources on a watershed basis, taking into account, social, economic and environmental issues, as well as community interests in order to manage water resources sustainably. • To date, there are 23 water control structures on the Mississippi River system. MVCA owns and maintains 12 and operates six for Ontario Power Generation and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry. • Is the lead agency for monitoring potential local flood threats,

MVCA work closely with hydroelectric producers, all levels of government, First Nations groups and others to provide coordinated operations of the river system. • Regulates development within the floodplain and other environmental hazards to reduce risk to human life and property caused by inappropriate development practices. • Assists municipalities in assessing the impact of land use decisions and development on the long-term health of the watershed and residents. • MVCA monitors 66 lakes on a five year cycle and sample for total phosphorus and cholorphyll a, water clarity, invasive species and fish species. • Reliable information is collected to document current water quality conditions. The information is used to encourage sound stewardship practices to help preserve and protect water quality.

Meet Lexus who was hiding under a blanket the first weeks after her arrival at LAWS. Suddenly she started to peek to see what was going on around her. Since the beginning of May Lexus enjoys back scratches and has no more flat ears when you approach her. This improved behaviour happened with the dedicated help of volunteers who like to socialize cats. Lexus won't sit on your lap yet, but if you're willing and have time and patience Lexus will be a worthy girl to offer a home to.

Bring binoculars, and be ready to crane your neck, and cup your ears. The diminutive warblers are on their way back to, and through, High Lonesome Nature Reserve, to breed in its forests (these are wood warblers, after all) or to feed before carrying on to the far north, and west. Most of the 25-30 species that visit or stay at High Lonesome, weigh between eight and 20 grams. Tiny little insect eating energy

balls, the warblers make the long trek back from South and Central America to breed. Their spring colours are vibrant as are their warbles. Be ready to wonder at these feathery world travellers, and learn a little about how High Lonesome provides a welcome refuge for so many. You'll spend two hours wandering the trails of this gem of a nature preserve, observing the High Lonesome warblers, and other avian visitors. Led by ecologist and nature enthusiast Art Goldsmith, who travels the continent following warblers and other creatures, our

trek will reveal a few of their needle-billed secrets. High Lonesome Nature Reserve is one of six properties conserved by the land trust. More than 2,500 acres of ecological significant land in eastern Ontario have now been protected by Mississippi Madawaska Land Trust, which is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year. On May 2 I was thrilled to read a daily newspaper story about a successful bid by a group of Canadians to buy one of the most important Victoria Crosses (VC) in our country's military history. The purchase means the medal will remain in this country and it's on display at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa all this month.

The VC is the British Commonwealth's highest award for military valour. This particular medal was awarded to Lt.-Col. David Vivian Currie, a native of Sutherland, Saskatchewan for his role during the final phase of what was known as the 'Battle of Falaise Gap' in Normandy, France in August 1944. Currie's medal was the only VC

awarded to a Canadian during the pivotal Normandy campaign of the Second World War and the only one ever presented to a member of the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps. Last September a foreign collector conditionally purchased Currie's VC during a private auction in London, England for $660,000. However, because the medal is considered to be "of outstanding cultural significance and national importance" Canadians were given a six-month period of grace to top the foreign buyer's offer. Enter the national war museum! Staff put together a joint bid which was higher than last year's purchase price.

In 1989 Currie's widow Isabel sold his medals to a Canadian collector who held them until last summer when he decided to sell them at auction. The war museum entered the bidding but fell short at that time. Isabel Currie, now 105, lives in an Ottawa nursing home. Following the war her husband worked in the pulp and paper industry. But in 1959 then Prime Minister John Diefenbaker, who represented Prince Albert, Saskatchewan in Parliament, appointed Currie as Sergeant-atArms of the House of Commons. He held the post until 1978. Currie died in 1986 at age 73 and is buried in Owen Sound, Ontario.

This story holds particular significance for me. Because in a rarity, images of Currie winning the Victoria Cross were captured on film (both still photos and film footage) by members of the Canadian Army Film and Photo Unit (CFPU). The man holding the cine (motion picture) camera on Aug. 19, 1944 was a personal friend of mine, the late Jack Stollery from St. Thomas, Ontario. The then Sgt. Stollery and his fellow members of the CFPU went into battle carrying cameras, not guns. They documented actions of the Canadian Army across Europe during WW II. It was incredibly dangerous work and Jack won the Military Medal for the fearlessness

he showed while taking photos of Canadian soldiers in action at Ortona, Italy on Dec. 21, 1943. Near the end of his life Jack was appointed Deputy Sheriff of Elgin County. On Aug. 27, 1974 he died of a massive heart attack. He was just 57. Jack Stollery and the other members of the CFPU put their lives on the line throughout the Second World War documenting the important contribution made by Canadian troops in helping win the war in Europe. Construction well underway at St. Paul's church

Construction is well underway at St. Paul's United Church, Perth, on a renovation project that will assure its sustainability as a significant house of worship and cultural community hub in historic Perth. With the able assistance of Geoff Hodgins, a local architect, this 1854 stone church has been redesigned to become fully accessible. New audiovisual services, stage lighting, and air conditioning in the sanctuary will provide a greatly enhanced worship centre and an appealing venue for the theatre arts, educational, social and cultural events. Bob Sneyd, chair of the creative community space committee remarked that "St. Paul's faith community is affirming the radical inclusiveness essential to community outreach, providing a hub for every expression of creativity, discovery and growth." Three businesses in downtown Perth are now easier to access. StopGap Perth, in collaboration with Wildwood Design and the Town of Perth, has provided accessibility ramps to Kelly's Flowers, Fashion Envy and the Bookworm. StopGap Foundation is raising awareness and removing barriers to create a world where every person can access every space! The StopGap Community Ramp Project provides single step businesses with a colourful and deployable access ramp to help eliminate barriers in the built environment and create inclusive spaces where we can all live, work and play. The brightly coloured ramps do not present a perfect solution to the problem; however, they create interest and encourage people to start talking about accessibility in their communities. The project continues to highlight our human right to equal access and has successfully shone a light on this topic. The Community Ramp Project has been successful in highlighting how a simple ramp can make life easier for everyone. Businesses who participate have shared that a ramped storefront is more inviting; parents pushing strollers, couriers using

"For our members, what makes it even more special is knowing that each gifted quilt helps someone in need of comfort," said Linda McLellan, communications director for the board. "Since 2013, our group has created and gifted over 300 lap quilts. Our quilters try very hard to meet the needs of this community." All fabrics are high quality 100 per cent cotton for durability and each quilt has a soft flannel backing for warmth. The quilts undergo careful assessment to ensure that they meet a high standard of workmanship. Both the group's double-heart signature logo and its label are sewn in one corner on the back of each quilt. Recently the group received a "very generous" donation of $14,000, McLellan noted, from TD Securities Underwriting Hope Fund for the purpose of purchasing a new longarm quilting machine, which was unveiled by member Janet Gray during the open house. Using this machine reduces time needed to sandwich together the layers of the quilts. McLellan said the group has appreciated the support and encouragement received by Bradley McConnell, managing director of TD Securities Inc.Paula Clark, another member of the group, is the hospital liaise.A special fundraising initiative for the organization evolved from the partnership it formed with the Smiths Falls Community Hospital Auxiliary. The quilters provide 25 to 30 baby quilts each month to be given to all newborns at the hospital as gifts from the auxiliary. In return, the auxiliary gives the quilting group a

donation to both cover the cost of the fabrics used in making the little quilts and provide some additional funds for the purchase of other materials and supplies. "We provide both gender-specific and neutral baby quilts," said Clark, who delivers baby quilts to the hospital every month. To date, more than 1,500 have been created for the auxiliary's project. This volunteer registered charity's mission is to create and gift handmade quilts to newborns and those in need of a little extra warmth and comfort. Lynn Long, quilt request co-ordinator, said the quilts can be requested by any resident of Lanark County and surrounding area either by email to hhquilts13@gmail.com or by calling her at 613-2739755. OPP respond to nearly 500 calls for service during first week of May in Lanark County Between Monday April 30, 2018 and Monday May 7, 2018 officers from the Lanark Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to 493 calls for service. The calls included 24 motor vehicle collisions: five with deer, one with a coyote and five in parking lots. There were also four incidents reported with people in the ditch.

Impaired Drivers * At 1:02 a.m. on Saturday, May 5 officers patrolling Drummond North Elmsley Township stopped a GMC pickup truck traveling southbound on MacPhail's Road. As a result of investigation and breath samples a 35-year-old male from South Elmsley Township was issued a three-day suspension under the Highway Traffic Act. * At 7:29 p.m. on Saturday, May 5 officers patrolling the Town of Perth saw a Chevrolet pickup truck in the northbound lane of Chetwynd Street performing a "brake burner." The vehicle tires were squealing and a cloud of white smoke enveloped the truck. Trevor McCormack, 23 of the Town of Smiths Falls is charged with one count of failing to provide sample; one count of driving a motor vehicle while ability impaired by alcohol, both contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada. He was also charged with one count of stunt driving contrary to the Highway Traffic Act. He was released to appear in Perth court. "Relive the Spirit" .... It seems fitting that the reunion is taking place over Pentecost weekend, a time when Christians are very much centred on "the Spirit" - in this case, the Holy Spirit. Pentecost, 50 days after the resurrection of Christ from the dead, marks the birth of the Church. "Receive the Holy Spirit," Jesus said to his apostles soon after His resurrection from the dead, before giving them and their successors (bishops and priests) the authority to forgive sins in His name (John 20:22). Before His ascension into heaven 40 days later, Jesus told His disciples, "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." (Acts 1:8) Jesus was true to His word, as always. The theme of this weekend's (May 18-20) St. John Catholic School Reunion in Perth is "Relive the Spirit", a well-chosen and appropriate theme that honours the school spirit that has always been, and remains, strong in our schools and their many graduates. Hundreds of former students and staff of both the elementary and high schools will come from near and far to renew friendships and share stories of earlier days and "Relive the Spirit." The first Catholic school opened in Perth in 1818, two years after the military settlement was established. Mr. Murdock, the first teacher, received a salary from the government. The history of Catholic education in Perth has been steady and successful, thanks to the support of the town and its residents, and today there are two Catholic schools in the town. St. John Catholic Elementary School is on its original site next to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, on what has traditionally been called "The Catholic Block," bordered by Wilson, Church, Arthur and Grant streets. St. John Catholic High School opened in September 1992 along the Scotch Line. comed the message that first Pentecost and were baptized into the Body of Christ, the Church (Acts 2:41). That was a promising beginning, with the everexpanding church having an impressive influence on the development of western civilization and its largely Christian culture, and also having a significant presence to the above-mentioned "ends of the earth." The life and mission of the church continues in our own time. One expression of this mission involves the education and formation of children and youth through our Catholic schools. For such efforts to be fruitful, educators have to "live by the Spirit" (Galatians 5:16), lovingly and obediently relying upon the Lord to bless, guide and direct their efforts to help form the next generation of beloved friends and missionary disciples of Jesus. By making the following traditional Pentecost prayer our own, we too can invoke the Holy Spirit and participate in the transforming mission of the Church: "Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, and enkindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they will be created, and you will renew the face of the earth." The church and the world are very much in need of that "fire of (divine) love" made present in a new Pentecost, a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit to transform hearts, minds, lives, relationships - and entire countries and cultures. Choosing to not shake my fist and scream at the wind

It's lights out at Stephanie Gray's house, but she has a long extension cord I've had a lot of time to think about electricity lately. Recently, a thunderstorm apparently picked a fight with some hydro equipment, thrusting about 8,000 of us in Perth and area into a powerless state for about three hours. Almost a week before that, a windstorm pummelled the province, leaving a trail of damage to structures and trees, and knocking out power sporadically from one end of

STEPHANIE GRAY Column the province to the other. We had no wind damage, thankfully, but we were one of those powerless splotches. In our part of town, it was just our block that was knocked out - from Friday evening just after 9 p.m. until a little after 3 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. Here's the thing: I was not outraged. My dad offered his generator, but we were in the extremely fortunate posi-

tion of being able to run an extension cord from our house to the workshop at the back of my father-inlaw's yard, which joins ours. It gets power from their house, which is on the block around the corner. We plugged in our fridge (and shared some space in it with a neighbour), and a few other things, including the router so the kids could use their iPods and no one would go stark raving. As crises go, this was definitely not one. It was just inconvenient. Unless you were a large goldfish. I knew Girlchild's three fish would be OK without their bubbling aerator for a few hours. I mistakenly anticipated the power would return in the night, as outages don't tend to last very long.

When it was still out in the morning, the fish were struggling. I hustled them in a spare tank over to the in-laws' to plug in the bubbles, but by Sunday we had lost two of them (RIP Goldie and Peek). The third one, the tenacious Pug, has recovered. When the power kicked out again a few days later, Girlchild was alarmed to the point I found myself promising to come home from work to blow bubbles into the tank with a straw if the power wasn't restored as predicted. It didn't come to that. Pug is fine. Aside from these casualties, I found the next biggest issue about losing hydro was negativity. Actually, outrage. And it was getting on my last nerve.

Granted, we had things pretty good. We had access to some electricity - albeit across the yard. We had running water - albeit cold and could flush toilets. I even had the TV running on Saturday night, for Pete's sake. That's probably partly why I didn't take the power outage personally. I was prepared to wait my turn as crews worked long days all over the province to get things up and running. We were a small cluster ... and once the huge scope of the problem became clear, I lowered my expectations and aimed for patience. I thought of the Ice Storm of '98. This wasn't even close. And it was beautiful and warm outside, so I did yard work instead of laundry and vacuuming.

I do think there are issues with Hydro One. The system seems touchy. And I'm not thrilled with anyone being paid many millions a year to oversee the utility. Still, I only have so much energy, and I'd rather channel it into something good. I try to pick my battles. More and more I refuse to get outraged over things I can't control, such as windstorms. And power grids. And nuclear annihilation. Perth Heritage Fair promotes local history

Workshops included military re-enactment, quilting and weaving, an early school days school house, Inuit games, and trapping. "We try very hard to have our kids take part in the workshops," event chair, Jim Winton said, "instead of just watching for an hour." What makes a good project is research, presentation, and knowledge of the subject matter. "We try to encourage unique research as opposed to just Googling things," he said, and added that he saw students had worked "very hard" on their projects. "That means they've gotten involved in their project, their doing interviews or going to the archives and looking up first-hand information, or they're going to the library. It comes across as being more involved in their projects, and they're more knowledgeable of their projects," Winton explained. He said if they just Google it, they don't seem to retain as much. Winton said he likes to see the students do projects that are close to their own roots.

Isaac Wilson, Grade 6 student at St. John Elementary School, shared his love of baseball and his history project included how Perth hosted a few national tournaments over the years. He was one of the 90 students to showcase their projects at the Perth Regional Heritage Fair on May 9 at the Royal Canadian Legion in Perth. "They will interview their grandparents, and learn their own heritage," he said. Such was the case for Charlotte Stewart, who is a student at St. John Catholic High School in Perth. Her French project discovered the one-room school, Pine Grove School House. "My grandfather, Allan Stewart attended this school," she said, decked out in period clothing. "I liked BBQ, bouncy castles, petting zoo, face painting, cotton candy, slip‘n slide, horse drawn wagon ride, free to table, PINK cement truck, Police & Fire vehicles and more.

She added that she was impressed with the students creativity and their knowledge of subjects. "They're really well done." Ayla Vanderaa, a Queen Elizabeth Grade 6 student who lives in Tay Valley, discovered three mica mines near her home, including the Silver Queen Mine in Murphys Point. "Mica is used in a number of things, like makeup," she said. "That's what gives it the shine." Mica, a layered mineral, is also used as a thermal or electrical insulator, as Vanderaa learned. Then there was the baseball display by Isaac Wilson. A Grade 6 student at St. John Elementary School, Wilson has had a love of the game for a long time, he said. "I couldn't believe there is so much history in Perth about baseball," he said. His project included photos of teams from as far back as 1897, and a handmade ball diamond on his display board, complete with real turf. "There were national championships played here," he said. Wilson was a member of the Perth Little League team that hosted the provincials last summer, and his project included photos stories published in The Perth Courier.

Men's league returns after year hiatus The Perth Golf Course Tuesday evening men's league resumed this week after a one year hiatus. The league originated in the early 1950s, started by two local businessmen, Russ Ellis and Ken Burns. The league will meet each Tuesday with a tee off at 5.30 p.m., play nine holes with food and refreshments available afterwards. You can play for an evening or join the league for the season. All are welcome.

We had 61 golfers out on May 8 playing a four-man scramble. Two teams tied with a 32 on the front nine. Joe Jarbeau, Toby James, Scott Rintoul and George McMillian tied with the team of Les Cross, Bill Nichols, Mike Merrau and Bruce McIntyre. Liquor sales likely at Perth Farmers' Market

Town council endorses private member's bill to regain landfill control DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@metroland.com Town council is set to pass new rules to allow for liquor sales at the Perth Farmers' Market. There have been "a lot of changes made," to provincial regulations, said community services director Shannon Baillon during Perth town council's committee of the whole meeting on Tuesday, May 1. Council voted, unanimously, to approve the changes to town laws which would see town policy align with provincial liquor laws. "I think this is a really well thought out policy," said Coun. Jim Graff. "It makes it a much more inclusive thing for people." Deputy Mayor John Gemmell asked about the "safe transportation" provisions, which make the "permit holder ... responsible for ensuring that patrons arrive home safely," according to the law. "You need to provide the ability (for) people taking taxis home," said Baillon. "You need a phone number." Sellers at the farmers market at the Crystal Palace must now "provide a copy of the 'Occasional Extension'

of their permanent liquor licence to the municipality." The town also requires a certificate of insurance for both farmers market liquor sales and industry events. Consumption of alcohol is allowed in the following areas: • Perth and District Community Centre main floor surface, when there is no ice; • Crystal Palace; • Town hall council chambers; • Provincial offences court at town hall; • Matheson House, home of the Perth Museum, and grounds; • Perth and District Indoor Pool's multi-purpose room; . Terrace on the Tay (old Mill Street swimming pool); • Last Duel Park campground; • Tay Basin parking lot. Perth supports landfill controls A town may fill up a landfill with waste, but then may not be able to have much control of the site thereafter. Perth town council, however, wants to change that, and it voted to support a private member's bill at Queen's Park to wrestle control of the province's landfill

Ernie Hardeman, the Progressive Conservative MPP for Oxford, has put forward a private member's bill, Bill 16, which seeks to give municipalities control over landfill sites. He sent a letter to Perth town hall on March 26 seeking their support. Coun. Judy Brown told Perth council that she had heard quite a bit about the issue in Oxford, which includes towns like Woodstock. "A lime stone quarry west of Woodstock," had outlived its usefulness, said Brown, and there was a fear that the site would be turned into a landfill site. "The fear is that they will get Toronto's garbage," said Brown. But, "the local folks don't have much say about it." Such a problem would more likely affect Drummond/North Elmsley and Tay Valley townships than Perth itself, said Deputy Mayor John Gemmell, but he said he found it odd that "we have control over a nuclear dump," if one existed in the town limits, but "not (control over) a landfill."

February 17, 1946 to May 6, 2018 Passed away May 6, 2018 after a short illness in Truro, Nova Scotia at the age of 72. Brian was born (twin brother to Bryant) on February 17th, 1946 in Fort Fairfield, Maine, USA. His nickname given by family and friends was ‘Barney’. Brian is survived by his two sons Derek and Bradley of Calgary and twin brother Bryant (Susan), Ottawa, brother David (late Christine), of St. Augustine, Florida and sisters Audrey of Vancouver and Katherine Nesrallah (late Ron) of Carleton Place. Predeceased by his parents Donald and Annie (Mahaney) Cougle of Almonte. Brian lived in many different places during his lifetime Perth, NB, Ottawa, Ont., Calgary, AB and then Truro, NS. He received his diploma in Business Administration from SAIT, in Calgary in 1973. He had many different occupations while living in Calgary and then retired to Truro. He went through life with only a right eye and never ever complained. Funeral services are being arranged. His ashes will be spread on the Saint John River in July, as per his wishes.

Irene Boudreau Long Irene Boudreau Long passed away on Jan 5, 2018 at the Palliative Care unit of the Brockville General Hospital. Irene is mourned by her husband, Brady Long, her daughter Colleen Gowan (Chris), grandchildren Keira, Jordan and Adam, her sister Marie Smith (Leo), her brothers Alan (Sandy) and Ronald Boudreau and many nieces and nephews. Irene was a teacher for many years in Montreal, Ottawa and Alberta and ended her career as Principal of the School of Hope, a home schooling program in rural Alberta with over three thousand students enrolled at one point. She leaves behind many friends and colleagues across the country. William (Bill) Ernest Burns age 79, passed away Monday, May 7th 2018 at the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital in Smiths Falls. He was born on January 10th, 1939 in Franktown. Bill was the oldest son of Harry and Elsie (Kelford) Burns. Bill came from a family of 11 children. He is survived by sisters Audrey (Dale), Dorothy (late Donald), Alice, Ruth (late Lorne), Lorraine and brothers Allan (late Sandra), Gordon (Norma), and Howard (Shelley) and was predeceased by brothers Raymond (Anne) and David (Linda). Coming from such a large bunch instilled in him great values of not only family but drive, work ethic, and determination. These characteristics allowed him to pursue many different opportunities throughout his life. When Bill was 16, he enlisted into the Military for a short time. He then was a truck driver for many years. Bill owned and operated “Burns Construction”, raced horses, farmed and raised a beautiful family of 3 boys, Philip Ernest (Lianne Brennan), Christopher Harry (Karen Yanosik), and William Daniel (Pam Hughes) with his beloved wife of 60 years, Elizabeth (Betty) Ann (Himmelman). Bill will be remembered as a gentle, funny, intelligent, stubborn, and loving grandpa to Jared (Rachel), Nicholas (Melissa), Alyssa (Justin), Brittany (Matt), Davey (Kara), Hannah, Zoë, and Emily and great grandpa to Payton, Lauren, Parker, Whitley, Jack, Jessie, and Sydney. Over time, Bill could be found in his shop, tinkering with chainsaws and fixing small engines for family and friends. He was an avid hunter for many years and had many tales or stories to tell to any listening ear. He will be greatly missed by brother in-laws Vernon (late Iris), Robert (Pat) and Frederick (Shirley) Himmelman as well as sister in-laws Sharron Robson (late Bill) and Oriole Jones (late Bob). Predeceased by sister in-law Debra, Marjorie and Ann Marie and brother inlaw Harry Dunnigan. Left behind with wonderful memories are his many nieces and nephews, friends, extended family, customers and past colleges. Tom passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 9, 2018, in his 98th year at Victoria General Hospital. He was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Audrey (nee McMunn) in 2003. Also predeceased by his sisters, Rita, Patricia and Norah and his daughter Sharon McBride (Keith). He will be greatly missed by his surviving children, Larry (Carol), Dale (Jane), Wayne, Jeanie (Terry), Noreen (Howard), Debbie (Steve), and Jackie (Randy) and his grandchildren, Lori Lynn, Debbie, Paul, Jenn, Krysta, Kelly, Dagny, Steven, Michael, Tess and Abby, and many great grandchildren, all of whom he loved dearly. Tom was born in Perth, Ontario, the only son of Thomas Stafford and Margaret Doyle. He was employed as a foreman in the forestry department at Ontario Hydro in Cobourg for over 30 years. He made many life long friends there. Tom took up the bagpipes in his fifties and enjoyed playing in the Cobourg Legion Pipe Band. He played his pipes for fun after that. Tom and Audrey relocated to Victoria, B.C. in 1989. Their lives in retirement took up a rhythm of frequent family gatherings and outings. Tom also became a self-taught artist and created many works of art for his family and friends. He spent his last years at the Berwick, Royal Oak. He was still meeting new people and maintaining friendships to the end. Donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be greatly appreciated.
