PERTH MAYOR JOHN FENIK REFLECTS ON LIFE AFTER RECENT HEALTH SCARE LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com It took two days in the intensive care unit in Ottawa for Perth Mayor John Fenik to take a deep breath, and an even deeper look into his lifestyle, hug his wife and grandchild, and turn off his electronic devices. While he was visiting family in Ottawa in June, Fenik said he wasn't feeling well, so he checked himself into the emergency department at Montfort Hospital. "I was feeling really crappy. I was experiencing hot and cold flashes, a general feeling of weakness and an uncharacteristic lack of energy," he told the Perth Courier. "Basically my heart was out of normal rhythm," he said. "One half of my heart was working overtime, while the other half was just sitting around doing a lot of nothing." It was during the time when the staff at the hospital was working on Fenik that he began to evaluate his life and his priorities. "While the ICU team were working on me it dawned on me that this might be it," he said. "I may not make it. I mean, the heart rates up there as a

pretty important organ. Messing around with it, well the final outcome is not guaranteed, not by a long shot." The ICU team administered medication to get the heart back to a regular sinus rhythm. "As they gave me the medication I thought to myself, I can't die. My affairs are not in order and there were things on my bucket list I wanted to do but never got around to doing," he said. From start to finish, the treatment to get Fenik stabilized took about 45 minutes. He stayed in the hospital for two more days. Now he said he's thankful to be feeling better, "but not 100 per cent," after his recent health scare. Fenik wants to offer some friendly advice for those

PERSONAL AFFAIRS Do your loved ones a favor. Make sure you have a valid Last Will and Testament and Power of Attorney, along with written wishes regarding your burial. It's far easier for a loved one to say, "John wanted it this way," as opposed to, "I wonder what John would have wanted?"

Every day, tell those you care for that you love them. You simply can't say that four-letter word enough. Fenik returns to his mayoral duties Aug. 1. In his place has been Deputy Mayor Ed McPherson. But for now, Fenik said he's spending his downtime reading, writing, swimming and working on "Foxtail," a secluded piece of property he recently purchased to enjoy his time away from the hectic life of politics. "My new motto: live long, or live short. I have thought about some lifestyle changes that I needed to make - eating better, regular exercise, turning off my cell phones and social media on a regular basis," he said. "These electronic shackles will kill you."

PROVINCIAL FUNDING FORMULA CONCERNS HOSPITAL Change is on the way and it will likely be "disruptive." Dr. Barry Guppy, the new president and chief executive officer of the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital, warned that there will be change in the coming years, and that it will "likely (be) disruptive change." That includes "changes in the populations we serve," as well as financial problems. However, these changes should "not (be) feared, but embraced," he said, during the hospital's annual general meeting at the Great War Memorial Hospital site in Perth on Tuesday, June 25. "We are well positioned to thrive."

THE ISSUE: HOSPITAL FUNDING CHANGES FROM QUEEN'S PARK. LOCAL IMPACT: HOSPITAL IS BRACING FOR CHANGES TO FUNDING, LHINS, ABILITY TO REPAY DEBT, AS FINANCE COMMITTEE CHAIR CALLS FOR CHANGES TO PROVINCIAL FUNDING FORMULA. This year marks the fifth consecutive year of the hospital recording balanced financial books, with money going toward paying down debt. But the hospital will also have to contend with the fact that there is "volatility in the funding formula," which will make things "increasingly difficult for the hospital ... to have the funds that we need," said Guppy. The hospital does not get money from the province to pay for new equipment. Rather, the hospital's two foundations have to raise funds to pay for the equipment, like the ongoing quest for a new mammogram unit. Gardener Church, representing the liaison committee, said the hospital will need $30 million over the next 10 years to meet its

anticipated equipment costs. Currently, the hospital is "on track to get slightly less than half of that," through fundraising efforts. He commended municipalities who realized that "health care is enormously important economically." The hospital is looking beyond just Perth and Smiths Falls for funds. Cheryl Beckett of the hospital finance committee also noted that the hospital has to have a balanced budget, by law. The debt load is going down significantly every year, at an annual rate of about $500,000, but she said that hospital is "anticipating not such a high surplus this year," leaving less wiggle room to finance this. One of the many reasons for this is because of "higher snow removal costs," she said.

STORY BEHIND THE STORY

With Queen's Park promising big changes to the health care system, the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital is hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst when it comes to its future finances.

OPINION EDITORIAL

The choice to fly, wear, or otherwise associate oneself with a flag is, inherently, a bold statement. If you fly a Canadian flag on your front porch, for example, you are telling the world that you are Canadian and proud of it. In recent years, a number of municipalities in the Ottawa Valley area have chosen to raise the Pride flag as part of their local Pride parades and festivals. This, too, is a clear statement, proclaiming that everyone, regardless of sexual orientation and gender identification, is welcome in these communities. Flags, and people's reactions to them, can indeed reveal much about someone's character. Recently, North Grenville council heard a delegation from a citizen who put forth the curious opinion that the Pride flag is itself discriminatory. Harman Boersma argued that the municipal flag policy states that "at no time will any flag be flown that's inappropriate, offensive, discriminatory, prejudice, political, or religious ... and I've argued in my articles that the rainbow flag is all of those." Members of council explained to Boersma that, in their opinion, the Pride flag is none of these things - and in this case, it's council's opinion that counts. At the other end of the spectrum, there are those in this area who choose to fly the Confederate flag. Earlier this month, one appeared at a car show in Smiths Falls. Whether those who choose to use this flag as decoration want to admit it or not, people who associate themselves with it are aligning themselves with the Confederate States of America, which went to war against the U.S. in the 1860s to resist abolition and maintain their Black slaves. As such, the Confederate flag continues to be viewed by most people as a subtle (or not-so-subtle) endorsement of white supremacy. In Canada, people have the ability to fly whatever flag they want - this is freedom of speech; but freedom of speech also means that you recognize that in flying any given flag, people are going to judge you for it in one way or another, whether they judge you as a proud Canadian, a person who embraces inclusivity, or a bigot. The progression of society is a constant battle of pushand-pull. Flags, people's reactions to them, and indeed the reactions to the reactions, are often good ways of telling which side of history a person is on.

Gary Duggan photo Gary Duggan of Perth is an avid golfer at Maple View Golf Course. Here is in on the links this summer. LETTERS & COMMENTARY YOUNG MD STUDENT APOLOGIZES TO PERTH FOR SHORTAGE OF DOCTORS I am sorry that our health-care system failed you, Perth. I am sorry that 2,300 residents are now without a primary care physician. I wanted to be that physician. I wanted to be your doctor, to practice rural medicine. I am a good physician and unfortunately, Canada is losing quality doctors every single year to the United States. I was raised on a ranch in Parham, Ont., and I am currently a family medicine resident physician in Atlanta, Georgia at Emory University. I tried for two application cycles for medical school in Canada, and applied to Ontario medical schools, Memorial University (East Coast) to the University of British Columbia. After two years filled with rejection letters, I decided to apply internationally at Ross University School of Medicine in the Caribbean.

I had come to realize that a lot of Canadian students were following this same path. My goal was to be a rural primary care physician near my hometown. I understand the hardships that come from living an hour away from the nearest city and the importance of establishing care with a rural physician that has not only provided care to you, but to your entire family. I understand the struggle with transportation to get to appointments, to potentially reschedule, to have options for home visits, and let me tell you: I so desperately wanted to be that doctor for you. After learning about how seats are saved for international students at our medical schools in Ontario, I was livid. I was wanting to graduate and work in rural primary care, where doctors are needed the most. Instead, we take international students, who pay triple the price, graduate and return to their home country. We have saved physician

visa jobs for Saudi Arabians, who after they finish their training in Canada, leave to go back home, taking potential spots for Canadian students, and this still leaves us with physician shortages and it is not fixing the underlying problem. Canadians NEED doctors, especially in primary care. So here I am, a smalltown country girl who struggled to get a loan to attend medical school internationally, while Canada receives payment from international students to study medicine in my own country. To facilitate change, I would encourage every Canadian to petition their MP.

COUNCILLOR, COP, KING: PERTH THEATRE HAILS DAVID BIRD AS MACBETH DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@ metroland.com From a gun to a sword, from walking the beat to walking the battlefield on stage, David Bird is bringing a lot from his day job into his acting work as Perth's newest Macbeth. "You tend to draw from life experience," said Bird, seated on a stool beside his director, David Jacklin, on stage at the Full Circle Theatre on Tuesday, July 16. "It's stolen from somewhere." From his Ontario Provincial Police work with the new Lanark County Mental Health nurses that are embedded with the Lanark County OPP detachment, and his work with helping victims of crime, "I see him bringing

A

those insights into it," said Jacklin of Bird. He brings "a more complete understanding," of the human condition, thanks to his police work. Bird said that BarnDoor Productions are "not a comedy theatre," troupe, and that in his decades on the Perth stage, he has played "a whole range of different characters, and different styles of play," from Noel Coward's The Blithe Spirit (1941) to Norm Foster's romantic comedy The Love List (2003). Bird has been in the interesting position of not only being in Shakespeare plays, but also playing The Bard himself (Old Shakespeare) on stage. But for him to play one of the most famous, and murderous, kings in English literature? "It's a huge opportuni-

ty," said Bird. As a town councillor and as an OPP police officer, he is often pulled in different directions, away from the stage. "My work can be forgiving," he said. "Other things take priority," he said, so, rehearsal days - usually Sundays - are set up well in advance.

VERY SUPERSTITIOUS Jacklin called Macbeth "one of the best of them all. There is Hamlet, and...," he says, trailing off. "Still can't bring myself to say it," he says, following an old theatre superstition (some would say theatre custom) to never mention the name Macbeth, save for during rehearsal, as actors and theatre types believe it to be unlucky. "The Scottish Play,"

TOXIC

DECISION?

Desmond Devoy/Torstar David Bird takes up his sword and shield on the stage of the Full Circle Theatre in Perth on Tuesday, July 16, during a photocall for the upcoming Barn Door production of William Shakespeare's "Macbeth." Jacklin calls it at last, though some also refer to it as "Mackers." (One way to break the

curse, having said the word "Hamlet," is to run out of the theatre, turn around three times, spit, swear,

and then beg to be readmitted to the theatre.) See - page 11

The provincial government is repealing the Toxics Reduction Act as part of a Bill 66 promise to cut red tape for business. It’s a move that has left many, like occupational hygienist John Oudyk, upset and concerned. In this week’s instalment of the Torstar Community Brands multipart, web-exclusive series A Toxic Decision? experts sound the alarm on the repeal.

Continued from page 10

"It's not that we believe it (the superstition) in this century," said Jacklin. "It's the theatre tradition." Bird smiles at Jacklin and adds: "Why tempt fate?" Bird, an Englishman, plays a Scot, but not the kilt-wearing man with a great orange beard that might spring to mind. No one has a Scottish accent in this production, and, in general, the play is usually played without any accents. In fact, according to Jacklin, since kilts did not merit a mention in Scotland until the 1500s, and this play takes place around the year 1050 AD, don't expect to see Bird in a kilt. One part of the play that is very real to the era are the swords, made by Tay Valley Township blacksmith Don MacKay. While the actors who use the swords use Nerf foam blades during rehearsal, once they have mastered the moves, they will trade up to the real deal, as Jacklin is qualified to do stage fighting. "You go up a level," said Bird. "You move differently. It changes the way you move," with a sword in hand. People do not have as much wrist strength as

they may have had in 1050, because of farming and fighting. "It's not instinctive (for) people to do that," said Bird, swinging his wrist around.

MODERN MESSAGES While many of Shakespeare's tragedies are fictional takes on real-life historical figures, their eternal appeal lies in their look at human nature. In the case of Macbeth, he provides an example of "the road to hell being paved with good intentions," said Bird, and how "one bad decision leads to another bad decision." The play shows how Macbeth and his wife "lose empathy" with those around them. "It's a love story as well," said Jacklin, noting that when Macbeth returns home to his castle, the audience sees "a reunion between a loving couple." However, their loving marriage gets fixated on power. "They become fixated on the wrong thing," said Bird. Historically, the men point out that the play came out only one year after the "Gunpowder Plot" by Catholic terrorists intent on killing the king by blowing up the houses of parliament in London,

making the play certainly topical in 1605 England. "It's not just about the pursuit of power. It's the pursuit of power at any cost," said Bird. While Lady Macbeth urges her husband on, Bird notes she loses control of her husband. But Lady Macbeth is an interesting dare we say it, early feminist? - character. She declares in Act II, scene i, calling on the heavens to "unsex me here." Earlier, in Act I, Scene iv, she looked forward to "the fatal entrance of (King) Duncan, under my battlements." Note the words "my battlements." It would "oversimplify it to say that these are two evil people," said Bird. Jacklin added that Shakespeare does "not make murdering a king a black-and-white affair," bringing a complexity to the story that would have been unusual to audiences at the time. The BarnDoor production of William Shakespeare's Macbeth plays at the Full Circle Theatre, 26 Craig St., at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 2, 3, 8, 9, 10, 15, 16, and 17, and with 1:30 p.m. matinees on Aug. 4, 11, and 18. Tickets are $20 at the door, $22 reserved. Cash payment only at performances.

OPINION

SCOPING OUT THE NEIGHBOURS' HOUSES ... BUT NOT IN A CREEPY WAY STEPHANIE GRAY IS GETTING REACQUAINTED WITH THE NEIGHBOURHOOD STEPHANIE GRAY Column

insideottawavalley.com

Back in June, I wrote a column about my dad and a disagreement he had with a ladder that resulted in a broken heel and cracked ribs. He's healing (heeling!) up well, but still has a few weeks to go in a cast, so Boychild and I have undertaken the task of walking Bailey, the 88-pound golden retriever. We don't go for long walks. Bailey is all business, really, and he gets it done pretty quickly. My parents have lived in the same house since I was four, and I often feel a bit like I still live in the hood. I

visit them, of course, but I also work nearby sometimes. Our veterinarian and my hairdresser are just down the road. Groomboy's mom is in a nursing home nearby. Girlchild's gymnastics club is in my old school gym, which was visible from my childhood home until someone built a house in the field a few years ago. The other day, as I was walking Bailey down my old street, I got looking at all the houses (not in a creepy, peering through the windows kind of way). The neighbourhood was mostly built in the 1960s and '70s; our family moved there in the 1970s, and I can only remember a couple of additional houses being built. At the far end of the street, there was a field on

Stephanie Gray photo Bailey puzzles over who lives in that house. either side. The neighbourhood kids used to play in one of them and build forts. The other field was sometimes used as a shortcut to the elementary school. Now the shortcut field has houses on it. Only one field remains ... and there are no forts. I can remember so many things about those houses and the people who lived in them when I was a

kid. I remember their names and some lovely details. The lady in the last house before the fort field would give out fudge at Halloween. It was OK, though, because she was the grandma of a friend who also lived on our street. I babysat at three of the houses. One house had four brothers - one of them was in my grade at school.

One of the kids next to them is now a well-known high school teacher. Closer to my house lived a couple who bred canaries, and my friend across the street would sometimes be asked to look after them, so I would get a peek. So much singing! And then you could likely find us playing Barbies a couple of doors down with two sisters. My first best friend (she moved far away when I was six) lived beside me. I still remember how very sad I felt about that. As I walked down the street, I marvelled at how much things change. I know some of my parents' current neighbours, but not nearly so many and not in the same way. I can only think of one who lived there when I was a kid. I don't even know everyone on my own street very well. This week, when out

expert advice? breaking news? today’s top stories? Care about where you live? crime? events? what to read? cooking?

We’ve got a newsletter for that.

with Bailey, I met the new neighbour beside my parents. Turns out she was one of my students many years ago. I also finally met the other neighbour beside them, who hasn't lived there all that long. She was walking her dog. It's amazing how dog walking can really help you to get to know a neighbourhood. My current bestie has talked about this for years. She tends to know where all the other dog people in her hood live, as well as the people who dole out biscuits (for her pooch, not her). Maybe we should all get dogs so we can get to know one another again. STEWART PARK FESTIVAL PROVIDES ECLECTIC MUSIC SCORE FOR A HOT SUMMER WEEKEND DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@ metroland.com From the first chord to break out over the grass and water, the Stewart Park Festival was wired for sound. The festival began on the afternoon of Friday, July 19, with the TD Youth Showcase. Kalil Bailey and Oliver Matthews were the first performers on stage, but Declan Perkins gave, by far, the most eclectic performance of the after-

noon. The winner of the festival's coffee house competition for young artists, gave a performance that began with Sergei Rachmaninoff's (1873-1943) Preludes in C-sharp minor (Opus 3), No. 2, (1892), better known as "The Bells of Moscow," followed by a song from jazz pianist and composer Thelonious Monk (19171982), as well as other songs at his electric keyboard. "I can't sing, I can't dance, and I can't play the guitar so I play the piano,"

joked Perkins as he said hello to the crowd. He said he had not planned to play the Rachmaninoff piece for the festival, because it was "a bit too dark." However, he read a quote online from festival co-organizer John McKenty, saying that the festival was looking for "a diversity of performances this year," so he replied to this by saying that "if it's diversity they want, it's Rachmaninoff they'll get!" Joel Leblanc, the festival's organizer, said that the showcase was "a great

opportunity for the youth of this town to perform," he said in between sets on stage that afternoon. The final performers were six young people from Perth who form the band Impact. They won the RBC Ottawa BluesFest's Be In The Band contest, and performed there earlier this summer. They were mentored by former Perth and District Collegiate Institute music teacher and choir director Jack Hurd, and Isaac Matthews. If the youth showcase

in music's history. There were more than 2,000 ducks sold for the YAK Youth Services' fundraiser, when thousands of yellow plastic ducks were thrown from the bridge over the Little Tay into the swift waters below on Sunday, July 21. Several members of the Perth Blue Wings hockey team were on hand to help launch the ducks over the edge. Winners included: Melanie Dellaire (first); Maria Kuzych (second); Annie Creighton (third); Hinda Goldburg, Kim Spence and Kim Warwick (gift baskets). LOCKETT, April Amy Lynn April came to us after a long and bumpy road, and regretfully left us in the same. In the two years April was with us, she showed more resiliency, compassion, and unconditional love than most people can fathom in their entire lives. She was deeply treasured by her Mommy Kaitlyn and devoted to her brother Karter. She was Grandma Tammy and Grandpa Kevin’s little angel and bright ray of sunshine, wherever she went, she would light up the room, and the purest of souls would shine through her. Whenever her aunts; Samantha and Breanna (Dylan) or cousins; Brayden and Devon would come over, she would flash her giant, full tooth smile, and the day’s worries would be wiped away. A super tight hug from April could change your entire mood. Her great-grandparents Jack and Doreen Churchill and Virginia (late William) Lockett loved the way she laughed, her devious little laugh, accompanied by her sassy, no holds bar attitude. April was a curious, inquisitive little angel who loved playing at the park, on the swings, at the splash pad, and swimming in her pool. She loved to have her picture taken, loved to sing and dance and loved caring for her family. For everyone who knew her, there will be a place inside our hearts that will forever ache for April, including all her extended family, neighbours, family friends, and those who just saw her out and about in the community. A Sharing of Memories of April’s life was held at the Blair & Son Family Centre, 15 Gore St. West, Perth on Wednesday, July 24, 2019 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. In honour and in memory of April, contributions can be made to the Kingston General Hospital - N.I.C. Unit. For condolences or more information, visit our website at www.blairandson.com

POLK In memory of Nancy Charlotte Polk (nee Hutcheson) March 5, 1954 - July 28, 2002 After you were gone, they told us to honour you by speaking your name. But for us, there are no words to express how much we cherished you. After you were gone, they told us to remember you. But for us, you are truly unforgettable.

Our quiet veneration of you is in your honour and our precious memories of you are our greatest treasure. After you were gone, we had enough of your love and strength within us to keep going even as the unbearable pain and overwhelming grief took hold. Since you’ve been gone, the suffering we’ve endured has not diminished; surely it never will. Loving and missing you for 17 years, Rick, Ryan, Megan and Matthew

O’GRADY, Michael James July 21, 2005 In memory of a dear husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, and great-grandfather. The years, they come and go so fast, The moments of time fade in flash. The tasks we do each working day, Add to the memories we store away. Our minds hold the thoughts so dear, Of loved ones far and loved ones near. A family we keep treasured in our hearts, And a family that age and time has made us part. Our lives are shaped by our father’s hand, His memory guides us on this land. We give thanks each and every day, For our father’s love that never goes away. Sadly missed by Etta, the O’Grady children, and their families

Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes.
