DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@metroland.com Mayor John Fenik has admitted to a complete change of heart when it comes to security cameras, and now wants to see them in Conlon Farm and elsewhere. He is even willing to recall Perth town council back from its July recess to do so. "The splash pad at Conlon Farm was hit by vandals who spray painted it," said a visibly upset Fenik as he spoke to Perth town council on Tuesday, June 25. It took as much as 30 hours of repair time to make that situation right again, he added. But that was not the only act of vandalism to get his goat. "(At) Terrace on the Tay, the windows were all busted up," he said, admitting he has changed his mind since 2016. "It is time to put video surveillance in front of town assets," he said. "I'm fed up with vandalism...These punks have to be

stopped." Recalling his own opposition to installing cameras because of privacy concerns, he said that "if you walk in any store, you will be on tape." Looking around the council chambers, he said, "I expect council's support on this." Coun. Judy Brown, who represents council on the Downtown Heritage Perth Business Improvement Area, echoed similar concerns. She said business owners were facing fears over shoplifting. Those owners wanted to see "more of a presence of (police) officers on bike or on foot," she said, though "we would have to pay more for the contract," as a result. Deputy Mayor Ed McPherson suggested that the town's by-law enforcement officer contract could be amended so that those officers "could work evenings too," not just during the day. See FENIK, page 5
