BLACK BEAR SAFELY REMOVED FROM TOWN BY DESMOND DEVOY Desmond.Devoy@ metroland.com Oh, bother! A black bear was spotted by several Perth residents early Sunday morning, causing quite a stir not far from the Perth Garlic Festival, taking place at the fairgrounds a few blocks over. OPP tweeted after 4 p.m. on the afternoon of Sunday, Aug. 11, that the bear who had been on the loose in the area of Arthur and Grant street was safely and humanely removed. Earlier that day, 'bearicades' were placed in the area to prevent members of the public from getting too close. The Ministry of Nat-

ural Resources, along with Lanark County OPP officers, assisted with the bear's removal. According to eye witnesses, it was tranquilized and removed from the area. Mayor John Fenik posted photos of the bear, stating he saw it when he got up in the morning. Jeanette Buker, visiting from Bayfield, Ont., said she was alerted to the presence of the bear just after 10 that morning. "Somebody walked by and said there was a bear," she said. "I spotted it in the tree...I was like, 'Wow!'" She added that "it's a good size bear." – with files from Hollie Pratt-Campbell and Laurie Weir

BUMPER CROP AT PERTH'S ANNUAL GARLIC FESTIVAL DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@metroland.com The crop may be a bit late, but this year's garlic harvest is a good one - according to "The Garlic Guy." Renfrew's Charles Briginshaw, also known as The Garlic Guy, said that "this year was really good. You can't get better," he said, cutting up garlic at his booth at the annual Perth Lions Club's annual Garlic Festival at the Perth fairgrounds on Sunday, Aug. 11. "Last year was extremely bad, just the opposite." In 2018, "all of Ontario was in that same rut," he said, with a dry spring, as opposed to the springs of 2017 and 2019, which saw flooding in the region. He noted that because of the cool weather stretching into June, "everything is about two to three weeks late this year. We didn't have a chance to have everything dried and hanging," he said as he continued to work through a pile of garlic with scissors to trim them. "You want it dry when you are harvesting," he said of garlic. "It's a plant. It needs moisture. But in the spring." Briginshaw uses raised beds which "was perfect for me. I had a lot of moisture in the spring," he said. "It takes a lot of hard work. I'm a one-man show ... (But) it doesn't take a lot of property."

CRITICAL UPGRADES OF OVER $350K NEEDED FOR LANARK LODGE ASHLEY KULP akulp@metroland.com With Lanark Lodge facing upwards of $350,000 in critical upgrades, Lanark County council will be forced to make some tough decisions during 2020 budget deliberations. The county's community services committee got a look at a maintenance review of the lodge's mechanical and engineering systems Aug. 7 during a presentation by interim director of long term care, Jennie Bingley. Bingley prepared a plan for the upgrades, which is based on a redevelopment feasibility study done on the longterm care home by engineering firm Vanderwesten & Rutherford Associates Inc. in March. At that point a complete rebuild was recommended at a potential cost of $70 million. "The big take-away from that (study) is every major mechanical and electrical system is past its useful life," she noted. Bingley said preventive action is required as the building, first constructed in 1966, will remain in use until at least 2025. It can serve 163 residents. "We want to make sure council's well aware that we're in a very old building. It is safe, of course, but because lots of the equipment is past its life expectancy, to expect the unexpected,"

she explained. While immediate repairs of approximately $30,000 is needed for the electronic distribution switchboard, Bingley said the remainder of the critical upgrades will come forward for discussion during the budget process. Infrared testing is being done on all electrical equipment at a cost of $8,900 and she estimated a report would yield $20,000 in repairs. A new mechanical elevator is needed for B corridor at a quote of $122,883. "We'll continue to prepare an estimate on what it would cost to repair that elevator and provide a report for next year," Bingley commented. The electrical generator for the emergency power distribution system is also beyond its life expectancy and could cost $250,000 or $10,000 for a rental. "There are no replacement parts for it and we had a big repair for it last year and under legislation we do need a generator in place within three hours," she explained, noting she isn't recommending it be replaced, but a rental could suffice. Lanark County Warden Richard Kidd (Beckwith reeve) suggested the generator be looked at for the 2020 budget as it could be moved to a new building. Other issues include an upgrade to the now obso-

lete electrical fire alarm system ($70,000 for fire panel); four new air handling units ($10,000 each) and five condensers ($10,000 each); backflow prevention, and replacement of copper piping in the water lines (cost to be determined). With all the work proposed, Coun. John Fenik (Perth mayor) wondered about a contingency plan for the residents. "Will we have to move the residents out of the building while this goes on?" Any project done at the lodge must receive Ministry of Health and Long Term Care approval, Bingley said, and she doesn't expect any residents would need to be relocated. "We have to submit a work plan so as not to disrupt residents," she added. "It's all centred around minor disruptions." Coun. Ed McPherson (Perth deputy mayor) questioned why the work couldn't be phased in over five years to remain in the building for another 10 to 15 years. "As far as the building goes, by 2025, the ministry requires us to be an A home and the work needed has shown we need a new home to meet that," explained chief administrative officer Kurt Greaves. He said a delegation from the county will speak to the ministry at the Aug. 18 to 21 Association of Municipalities of Ontario's annual conference in Ottawa to seek a five-year extension. "So we'll see how that goes."

PUBLIC SURVEY – RECREATION MASTER PLAN The municipalities of Perth, Drummond/North Elmsley, Tay Valley and Lanark Highlands are partnering in the creation of a joint Recreation Master Plan. A very crucial part of this process is gaining information from the residents through a public survey. This survey is now open to all residents to complete and can be

accessed online at www.perth.ca/recreationmasterplan. Closing date for the survey is September 10th. Anyone without computer access can pick up a paper copy of the survey at Town Hall, the Library or the Perth and District Indoor Pool, and must return it to Town Hall by September 10th. Regular updates on the development of the Recreation Master Plan will be posted on the Town of Perth Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, as well as the Town website at www.perth,ca/recreationmasterplan. The other three municipalities will also be updating their social media sites and websites. CANADA'S OLDEST ALUMINUM BOAT PULLS INTO RIDEAU FERRY FOR CLASSIC BOAT SHOW DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@ metroland.com Wooden boats were all the rage, but the Pogo, Canada's oldest aluminum boat, had a pride of place during the recent classic boat show at Rideau Ferry Saturday, Aug. 10. "You are now aboard the oldest aluminum boat in Canada," said Marc Laplaine, head of the boat committee under the Navy League of Canada's Outouais branch, when greeting visitors. "It's also the first welded aluminum boat in Canada." From 1954 to 1958, it defended Canada during the

Cold War as a sounding boat in the high Arctic for the navy, to chart the northern waters. It accompanied the HMCS Labrador, the first, and last-ever Canadian Navy icebreaker, on four missions, to assert Canadian sovereignty. The charts it produced allowed the large merchant ships that needed to supply the building of the Distant Early Warning (DEW) line to get to their frigid ports of call. "This boat had a bad reputation for a lot of rum being consumed," he joked. "I don't know where they hid the rum (but) they had a good time!" The 36-foot craft holds

the distinction of being the oldest functioning ex-Canadian navy motor boat in its original configuration. Over the years, the boat was used for everything from being a harbour launch in Halifax, to diving boat, safety boat, and reservist training vessel. She was transferred to the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa in 1995, before being transferred to the Navy League in 2005, where volunteers refitted her. The boat was one of dozens of antique craft on hand at the public docks at Rideau Ferry for the classic boat show, put on by the Manotick Classic Boat Club.

LOTS IN STORE DURING BIENNIAL RIDEAU FERRY REGATTA LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com It will be a fun-filled, thrill-seeking good time of a weekend Aug. 17-18 as the biennial Rideau Ferry Regatta floats into the yacht club. The event, organized by the Rideau Ferry Yacht Club, will captivate boat worshippers of all ages with vintage hydroplane racing, cardboard building and racing, and toy boat crafts galore. "I want people to get a taste of the history of Rideau Ferry - those who have never seen it before," said Scott Cameron, member of the yacht club. It's also a chance "for the older people to rekindle the exciting times they remember when they were younger. The other thing is that we can raise money to improve the docks."How do they get past the death that

occurred two years ago during the regatta, which shut down the event after William Pearson, 69, of Lakeville, Minn. died during a demonstration of his hydroplane boat"That was devastating," Cameron said. "But we get back on the water and we continue where we left off. During our safety meeting, which is paramount, we will pay tribute to William." There is always the danger of death during these types of performances with hydroplane boats that can reach speeds in excess of 150 miles per hour. Like the Canadian boat, Miss Supertest III, that will be on static display during the weekend. Owned by Murry Walker, this is a 30-foot long, 12foot wide boat that weighs more than three tonnes (boat and motor alone). She is mounted on her side on a custom-made trailer, so the

It has a 2,800 horsepower Rolls-Royce Griffin V-12 airplane engine and it could scream across the water at 170 miles an hour. It was owned by the Thompson family, who also owned Supertest Petroleum. This year marks the 60th anniversary of that first Harmsworth win, when Miss Supertest III defeated Maverick, considered the best boat in the

United States. There is lots going on during the weekend, but something special this year will be the CanAm boat race where a new trophy, the Frank and Jim Ramsey Trophy, will be presented to the winner."Frank and Jim were big racers here in the day," Cameron said. "We thought it would be nice to have a trophy in their honour."Boat racing started here in 1897, but the yacht club wasn't formed until 1909. The first regat-

tas were run from the Rideau Ferry bridge and sanctioned racing began in 1946. In 1957, property was purchased next to the home of the Ramsey brothers for a Rideau Ferry Yacht Club location. Smiths Falls' Don Johnston became a big boating star during the 1950s. The regatta remained a popular powerboat racing event until 1976, when it was discontinued. In August 2007 a Vintage Boat Regatta was established as a tribute, which is held each year. Come watch local politicians from neighbouring municipalities butt heads and boats - in the cardboard boat race on Saturday, Aug. 17 at noon. Jim Graff of Perth has a hydroplane boat which he will have in the water during the weekend. "It takes a lot to get it into the water," he said. "You

He's had the boat for 18 years, which was built in Quebec. The boat was in really good shape, "but the motor wasn't," Graff said. "Paul Hewitt, a terrific engine builder from Brockville, rebuilt the motor. I worried all the way home how I was going to tell the wife how much it cost to rebuilt it." Come see these vintage boats over the weekend. Other highlights include: Paddle making workshops (10 a.m. and 1 p.m. both days, $15 fee); minnow races; yummy treats and beverages and many displays by lots of vendors. In the Thursday, Aug. 1 print edition of The Perth Courier, a story on page 11, "Two Perth public schools to share principals with DCS, Glen Tay schools" had some errors. It was incorrectly reported the size of the Upper Canada District School Board's budget deficit. The figure was actually $11.7 million, not $10.7 as reported. The board implemented $11.7 million in cost reductions to address its deficit and pass a balanced budget during recent budget deliberations. Also, the savings relating to principal/ vice principal staffing for twinning the four schools referenced in the article was about $140,000 not $420,000. The two smaller schools mentioned in the article (Glen Tay and Drummond Central) have vice principals to help with administrative duties. This newspaper apologizes for these errors and any embarrassment it may have caused.

WHY REPORT ON THE OPIOID CRISIS? ARNPRIOR OVERDOSES SHOCKED US INTO ACTION, SAYS REPORTER DEREK DUNN

insideottawavalley.com

DEREK DUNN Column

Agreeing to be interviewed by a reporter requires a leap of faith and a level of courage regardless the topic. For the opioid addict loss of trust is among the most insidious aspects of their reality. Anyone who is a slave to fentanyl or other narcotics is cloaked in distrust: dealers only want your money; other addicts only want your drugs. Paranoia, hostility, and alienation become standard. Add to this the general public's stigma surrounding the recently proclaimed opioid crisis. (One study says 10 people die from illicit drug overdoses every day in Canada.) It is a moral failing, the logical extreme of hedonistic pursuit. Many look away rather than rudely express their belief: 'You have nobody to blame but yourself.' I've produced a few stories on the topic lately, ever since OPP announced five Arnprior overdoses in a period. It shocked a few into action. A business owner kindly organized an overdose-prevention workshop. A survivor bravely shared their story with me. Several shared their concerns about family members or simply their fellow residents. Most of those conversations couldn't be "used" in stories. The information was provided as deep background (mean-

ing they provided facts that I would need to independently verify) or off record. After two decades in journalism, my adherence to J-school training has diminished. Yes, off record only applies when the reporter agrees. And the reason for going off record must be compelling; I'm not on the punch-clock to engage in gossip. Still - a reporter (often a stranger to sources) is a sounding board or a cathartic outlet. It helps them, but also helps to educate the reporter - a person uniquely positioned to reach large audiences. I've learned and shared with our readers much about the opioid crisis. The vast majority of addicts, for instance, harbour some deep-seeded trauma. Sexual violence and abuse during childhood are common causes. There can be a genetic component to addiction. Hence the 'nobody to blame but yourself' is demonstrably wrong. Add in societal influences such as advertising, along with pain-killer addiction caused by hard manual work (a Marxist would have much to say about the brutalities of capitalism). It becomes obvious that most addicts are victims to be helped through mental health services, not criminals to be locked up in expensive jails. The plan is to keep writing on this topic. There is much left to learn and share. As a reporter at this media outlet, Derek Dunn covers a wide range of stories including mental health and court news.

WHO WE ARE Desmond Devoy/Torstar A Harris hawk from the Canadian Raptor Conservancy takes flight during the "Birds of Prey" show at the Perth Garlic Festival on Sunday, Aug. 11.

LETTERS & COMMENTARY EDUCATION MINISTER SAYS PROVINCE COMMITTED TO STUDENT SUCCESS I am committed to the success of our students and my mission is to ensure that our young people can develop the skills they need in a modern economy and help them find goodpaying jobs in Ontario. In the Ford government's first budget, we announced an investment of $700 million more in education for next year than the previous government committed to for this school year. This represents the largest investment in public education's history, underscoring our commitment to young people in Leeds-GrenvilleThousand Islands and Rideau Lakes and LanarkFrontenac-Kingston. Our government has increased funding to the Upper Canada District School Board this year, with over $342 million to be provided to help students get the crucial support they need

and ensure their continued success now and into the future. This increase also represents the largest allocation in the Upper Canada board's history. We recognize that many students face mental health adversity, and we take that responsibility seriously to help them in their time of need. I am proud to stand with Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Steve Clark as the government more than doubled mental health funding, and has increased funding for our students with special needs to the highest levels - for Frenchlanguage programming and for transportation. Our overall mission is student achievement - it must be the top priority for our school boards and communities. Students should not have to suffer because of poor administrative decisions by school boards. While school boards make their own decisions on staffing, class offerings and resource allocation,

we do expect them to put the urgent needs of students first. That includes mental health supports in the classroom. We are consistently making improvements to ensure student achievement is the priority and focus of all we do. Our government is building on our plan - Education that Works for You by introducing new measures that will help our students be leaders in the modern economy and gain the skills they need to find good jobs right here in Ontario. We are equipping students with the skills they need, including an emphasis on the skilled trades and STEM-related disciplines. We will continue to focus our efforts on ensuring the success of all Ontario students, so they can go through the journey of learning with confidence that they can obtain goodpaying jobs.

'A JOYFUL NOISE' SET TO DESCEND AT INAUGURAL FREEDOM FEST CHRISTIAN MUSIC FESTIVAL

www.abford.com

Facebook photo Christian rock band The Commissionaires will play the inaugural Freedom Fest at Perth's Stewart Park on Saturday, Aug. 17 at 5:30 p.m. together. "The money that we had committed was not going to be enough," he said. Mary went home to her husband and, after talking it out, "they've come under the banner of Freedom Fest," as a type of joint enterprise. Not surprisingly, several area churches are taking part in the event, and there is "a lot of support from the community," he said, like the Stewart Park Festival, who know the park well. "We are reaching out not just to church people," he stressed. "There is a lot of seeking in the world." People may be looking for answers, but "may not want to go to a church," because of previous "bad experiences." For families, the free event will also feature child-friendly activities like face-painting, games, and a bouncy castle. The Gideons will naturally be there with a booth, and there will also be food vendors, artists, and other informational booths too. During the setup and takedown time between acts, three local pastors will deliver short, punchy sermons, but he stresses that "it won't be a lot of churchy stuff." The second day of the festival does fall on Sunday, the Christian

Sabbath, but Weber said he does not see that as a conflict with "toiling" on the holy day since "it is a praise and worship event," but even so, it will not start until the afternoon, to allow for Christians to attend services that morning at their home churches. This year marks number 10 for the Perth Kilt Run, which will take place Saturday, Aug. 17, at 5 p.m. This is the first time it's been held in August, and it will coincide with Freedom Fest. The number of runners taking place this year is set at 1,743. It was in April when the organizers heard that they did in fact set a new Guinness World Record of 3,70 runners in 2016. The race is held in downtown Perth. There are several different courses that cover a variety of ages and levels of endurance. This year the start and finish are at Terrace on the Tay on Mill Street. There are six crossings of the Tay River this year, historic sites to see and get a little taste of the Highlands. All participants will be wearing kilts that's part of the fun! Come see what else is in store this weekend in Perth. Visit https://raceroster.com/ events/2019/21844/10thperth-kilt-run-2019 for more information.

Perth's inaugural Christian music festival, "Freedom Fest," will kick off at Stewart Park on the weekend of Saturday, Aug. 17 and Sunday, Aug. 18. "God put it on our hearts," said festival organizer Joe Weber, during a telephone interview on the afternoon of Tuesday, July 30. Along with his wife, he runs the Worth Saving charity shop on Wilson Street for about a decade now. He had attended several festivals, secular and otherwise, in years past and wondered: "Why not have a full-on festival for Christians?" He said he had a "dream, a vision, of people in the park in Perth, in fellowship." When this dream becomes a reality in a few weeks, he stresses that there will be "no denominations, no distinctions ... just to show that love that Jesus showed us." He got the idea about a year ago and "prayed on it for a while," adding that, when a Christian feels that God is pointing them in a direction, "we need to be obedient and do it." The next hurdle was that "I had no idea how to do that," he said of setting up a festival. "If this is what you want (God), you have to show the way." PARTNERSHIPSDivine intervention is one thing, but it is not coincidental that the first day of the festival coincides with the annual Perth Kilt Run. The run's co-founder, Mary Stewart, happened to be in Weber's store one day, unbeknownst to him. She overheard him talking about the troubles he was having pulling the festival

OPINION

SPOTTY INTERNET IS GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO DISCONNECT DID YOU MISS MY BARRAGE OF SUNSET SHOTS, ASKS STEPHANIE GRAY STEPHANIE GRAY Column

I have a hard time unplugging completely. I tell myself I don't really need to unplug, but I know I should - sort of. Sometimes. Recent holidays at a cottage we rent, where cell service and access to data is sketchy at best, proved that unplugging was a good thing. And because I like to be outside and/or to read books when I am at a cottage, I even skipped watching the news a lot. I watched enough to re-

alize the two bad guys who allegedly killed people in BC were found dead in Manitoba, and that there seemed to be at least one mass shooting every day in the States. I think there was also something about a ripped-up arms deal that could lead to nuclear war, but I'm not sure about that. I'll check to see if I need a bunker when I get back (Cold War II?). It was tricky to know what kind of weather was coming without reliable access to weather apps. One storm caught me a bit off-guard, and as I took pictures of it making its way across the lake I was a bit late closing a couple of windows, resulting in the wind tossing some things around. The interwebs would have shown me the thin purple band on the radar and the associated thunderstorm watch. My eyes and ears told me pret-

ty much the same thing (I'll move faster next time). Other years I've been able to send vacation pictures to friends or post updates on Facebook and Instagram. Pretty sunset! Big fish! Kids swimming! Kayak scenes! Campfire! This year I can send and receive text messages, but photos get stuck in the circle of doom. Emails don't fire well. Facebook and other social media and the weather get stuck on cached pages from the last reliable connection to cyberspace. Possibly my friends were relieved to not be inundated with beautiful, calming daily sunset pictures. Who knows? Don't tell me. One thing is for sure, the break from (mostly) not knowing was a good thing. I think. Unless I missed an evacuation order (pretty sure I didn't).

Stephanie Gray photo Disconnecting from the internet doesn't mean you can't take beauty sunset shots. What I didn't miss was the barrage of reaction to Trump missives on the Twitter (I don't follow him, but it's hard to avoid the commentary). I didn't miss the gossip and arguments and occasional (frequent) angry ranting on Facebook. Maybe I just need to follow different people. On Instagram I get my fix of cute bunnies and nature shots, at least (couldn't load those on the dock either). There is no shortage of

research out there that is warning us about the perils of constant connectivity in terms of our mental and even our physical health. There is also a wealth of research about the benefits of disconnecting and heading outside and reconnecting with nature and becoming more active. These things are enormously important for our mental and physical well-being. I would cite some actual statistics for you, but well, I'm still at the cottage and can't Google

things. Oh, darn. Maybe I achieved some extra balance this holiday. The cottage is always restorative: lots of fresh air and water activities, lots of book reading on the dock and lots of sunset (and other) photos taken with my phone - but not many sent. Possibly it has hit home that less screen time feels pretty good. Using the phone to text friends about connecting with them at the cottage - in person - and how to find us, was a good use of the technology. As were the photo reminders of our vacation memories. Will I get swallowed up in the online vortex again? Probably. I wonder if I'll get good cell service in the bunker ... Stephanie Gray is a word girl, project manager and college teacher who makes up words, has petulant body parts and obsesses about her patio. sjgray@bell.net.

PERTH MINOR ROYALS HAVE STRONG SHOWING AT PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS The Perth Minor Royals baseball team advanced to the Little League Provincial tournament in Orleans from July 27 to Aug 2, 2019. The eight- to 10-yearolds played against teams from Windsor South, Toronto High Park, Timmins, East Nepean, Cornwall, and Orleans. The Perth Royals played Cornwall to start the tournament and won 13-4. This was the first win for a Perth team in the provincial championships in over 20 years, noted coach Mike Bell. Perth got off to a strong start, putting up five runs in the first inning. Behind solid pitching from Cameron White, Cohan Bell, and Tommy Mierau, Perth shut the door and came out on

top. Perth played Timmins in Game 2, and again got off to a strong start by scoring a run in the first two innings. Timmins came back strong and pulled ahead 6-5 heading into the final inning. Perth then came up with a two-out rally, and scored three runs to take an 8-6 lead, but were unable to hold off Timmins and lost by a run, 9-8. Jamie Deforge pitched three solid innings for the Royals, and Will White scored two runs using his speed to get around the bases. Perth was up to the challenge in Game 3 versus the powerhouse East Nepean Eagles.

Mike Bell photo The Perth Royals minor baseball team played in the provincial championships after winning the Ottawa Valley district this summer. The boys played three games, winning their first one - their best show at a provincial tournament in the past 20 years. They are: Front row, left to right: Tommy Mierau, Tanner Ellick, Finn Halpenny, Jamie Deforge, Cohan Bell, Jacob Tysick; middle row, William Schoular, Truex McNevin, Peter Weeks, Will White, Ben Bryan, Hudson Borrowman, Cameron White; back row, coaches Russ Borrowman, Craig White, and Mike Bell. The Royals started strong with a run in the opening inning, which was followed by strong pitching from Ben Bryan, Cameron White, and Will White.

The teams traded runs each inning in a back and forth affair. The Royals played sound defensive baseball, with Will White and De-

forge making outstanding diving catches. Perth just came up short in the end, losing to the eventual provincial runner-up by a score of 11-8.

The Perth Minor Royals coaches - Bell, Craig White and Russ Borrowman - said they were proud of how the team played and competed. They have been practising since April, and their skillset and knowledge of the game has come a long way. "We knew we had to get better at the fundamental skills, and that was the focus during our practices," Bell said. "It's tough competition to play teams from much larger centres, and if you make errors or don't put the ball in play, it is hard to compete." Any time you can battle and have success against a team as strong as the East Nepean program, it will serve the Perth Royals program and players well. The Perth Minor Royals competed to the final out and had their greatest success at a provincial championship in decades. In the end, it was High Park of Toronto with the championship, as they trounced Nepean, 11-1 in the finals.

PERTH MAN TAKES 2,600-KILOMETRE GRIEF CYCLE AROUND GREAT LAKES LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com A Perth man has travelled more than 2,600 kilometres on his bicycle over 41 days to help heal his soul after losing his wife of 10 years - and he raised more $8,775 for various cancer research and care facilities. Mark Lawrenson lost

his wife Mary on Sept. 24, 2018, whom he had known 12 years. She succumbed to cancer at age 57, after a two-and-a-half-year battle. "I felt that (cycling around the Great Lakes) would help me through the grieving process," he said. "Which it has." While Mary was sick and going through cancer treatments - which includ-

ed three different surgeries - it became apparent to Mark that there are a number of organizations funded by OHIP, while others are not. "They are all fundamental in caring for our loved ones when they have cancer," he said. For instance, he said, Mary spent months in different facilities, and while

there she was covered under OHIP, "but when it comes to some of the doctors, oncologists, radiologists, they work for the hospital, but they are also involved in research and clinical trials ... none of this is supported by our OHIP. Yet it is fundamental in finding a cure. It became so apparent to me that I have to help out in any way that I can," he said. "I'm not a rich man but I can ride a bicycle." Cycling is a passion, and he says he's an enthusiast of the sport. Mark has three children of his own, including Brea yes that country singer from Carleton Place; and Mary had two children. Their combined family helped each other through the grieving process. "They've been great," he said. "They have all supported me on this journey. They thought I might be a little crazy, but ... they said they would support me because this is what I felt I needed to do." Mark said his journey took him down to the St. Lawrence River, then up and around the Great Lakes. "It was awesome. I had great weather ... stinking hot some days, but it was an awesome trip." He shared his journey on his social media feeds, where he had words of encouragement and financial donations along the way. "I have had a great response ... a little overwhelmed actually," he said. Mark stayed in motels along the way, or camped. "Probably 10 nights out of 37" he camped, he said. Mark said he felt Mary was watching over him during the ride. "There was always a sense of peace that I had about what I was doing," he said. "There were a number of occasions when I could see the shadow of birds following me. I looked around ... couldn't see them. And my feeling

He went through many small towns that his wife would have enjoyed. "She would have loved the small towns along Lake Huron. Mary would have loved them." He said this is just the beginning of his journey. "I have another trip planned for Sept. 24 and am riding my bicycle to Florida," he said, to mark the first year of Mary's death. "I anticipate there will be many more trips," he said, as he hopes to share some of what he's learned along the way. He says he hopes to perhaps do the Great Lakes journey on an annual basis, where people can join him. "I hope to raise money for research and to find a cure," he said. Donations were coming in through cash donations, through an online website, or email transfers. He did not have any support staff as he said it was a personal journey of heal-

ing. But he's entertaining the idea of having someone along for his journey to Florida. "I feel I have gotten to the point in my grieving process that I don't need the time alone anymore. I would appreciate some support," he said. "But I don't feel I need it. I'm quite capable of doing it on my own, and it still is a personal journey." As for any issues, Mark said he carried some 80 pounds of gear on his bike, and only had one problem he wore out a pair of sunglasses. Donations are still coming in, and will be divided between the following: Canadian Cancer Society, Great War Memorial site of the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital, the Ottawa Hospital Foundation, the Regional Ottawa Cancer Foundation, and the Bruyere Care Facility. Laurie Weir/Torstar Perth's Susan Wagner-White's creates pen and ink artwork, and prints of her pieces will be on display at the Studio Theatre in Perth for the month of September.

PERTH THALIDOMIDE SURVIVOR TO SHOWCASE ARTWORK AT STUDIO THEATRE SUSAN WAGNER-WHITE'S PENS HAVE TURNED LOVE OF POINTILLISM INTO A CAREER LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com Wise eyes simmer under delicate pools of ink. They captivate ... entice you to take a closer look. They watch you watching them. Your heart knocks, and your breath catches. Tears swim in your own eyes. Just breathe. How can so much feeling, heart and soul grab you from a piece of paper? How can you see the leathery texture of a chimpanzee's face by just looking at a drawing? Let's meet the artist and find out.

Perth's pen and ink artist Susan Wagner-White is as complex and intriguing as her artwork. It's easy to see how she puts so much of herself into each pen and ink drawing. Ethereally, it pours out of her and onto a blank slate as she sits in the sunlight at her drafting table. It's like she's in another universe, where she's fully capable and free; free to create what she feels and sees. She has everything she ever needed - a devoted partner, Rae, a new home, and her 'kids' - Chino, the blue merle chihuahua, 11; and Daisy, a Bichon mix, 10. Coming into the tribe soon will be a rag doll kitten with stunning blue eyes, named Precious. Her life, she says, is pretty amazing. "It's who I am," she said on a scorcher of a July day that she has graciously invited the journalist into her sacred, safe space. She is preparing for her first ever art show at the Studio Theatre in Perth. Prints of

her work, framed, unframed, and on canvas, will be on display for the month of September. Bruce Raby, a volunteer at the theatre and curator of the artwork, said he's thrilled to have WagnerWhite's pieces on display. "Displaying the work of local artists is one of the ways that the theatre as a community theatre gives back to the community," he wrote in an email to the Perth Courier. "The gallery space provides an opportunity for artists to exhibit and hopefully sell their work. As a minimum, it is an opportunity for exposure to the theatre's demographic group. In turn, the theatre charges a modest 10 per cent commission on art sold during the exhibition. Plus the theatre has wonderful works of art on display in the lobby area for patrons to look at while waiting to take their seats. See WAGNER-WHITE, page 18

WAGNER-WHITE TO SHOWCASE POINTILLISM ART Continued from page 16

So a win win for the artist and the theatre." It wasn't easy for Wagner-White to delve into art as a career, since it started in childhood as a hobby. The past half-dozen years she has really taken off and about 55 original pieces have been sold to people around the world. "It's my career now," she said. She draws for two to three hours before she breaks due to pain. Weekly massage therapy, medication and regular trips to her backyard hot tub help her cope with the pain. Her favourite time to work was at night, "because it was peaceful, and the city slept." Now she says, she's an early morning person, and zones in by listening to audio books. She breaks about every two hours and finds a comfy chair, where she may binge watch Netflix, "then I'll get back to it." She works for about five hours a day, five days a week. "Sometimes I'll take a break for a week, just to clear my mind." Her work is done by commission and she'll only book a few at a time. This self-taught artist with just high school art as

a background and a few classes here and there, was encouraged by friends to sell her work. A hummingbird piece was her first to fly - all the way to California. That was six years ago. The intricacy of pointillism is her trademark. Minuscule details are layered onto paper, sometimes under a lit magnifying glass. The work is so detailed it's hard to tell the difference from the original photograph. "I've heard from people that my pieces have more life than the (reference) pictures," she said. There is a lot of life in the animal eyes she creates - big cats, lizards, primates. The detailed eye is something she's honed. "It's like a whole universe is in there. It can propel you to a different stratosphere," she said. "I don't know if I'd be as detailed if I had longer arms." Wagner-White is a thalidomide survivor. Her mother took one thalidomide pill (known as Distaval) intended to cure morning sickness. Her mother was given two tablets of Distaval by her doctor in Perth after the drug was pulled off the market in Canada. The pill (she only took one) made her mother

feel worse than the morning sickness had, WagnerWhite said. As a result, WagnerWhite was born with short arms, her hands at her shoulders. One hand has three fingers, the other, four. She was one of the lucky ones, she said. "Mom took one pill and it stopped the growth of my arms." Wagner-White also has small veins, and blood tests are next to impossible to perform. Often, several painful attempts are made before a suitable sample can be retrieved from a vein in her groin. Wagner-White said she was one of three thalidomide babies born at the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital (Great War Memorial site in Perth) around the same time January 1963. She's been an advocate for thalidomide survivors over the years and said she's thankful for finally being compensated by the Canadian government - after 50-some years of fighting for justice. She said she is now able to live comfortably, and enjoy her accessible home, complete with standup shower and fulllength body drier, a commode with an automatic

Laurie Weir/Torstar This cat's eye looking up is a favourite piece of the artist, Susan Wagner-White, which she's created with pen and ink. lid, and washing and drying components. "I didn't know what life was supposed to be," she said. "I asked my mom, 'why me?' She said, Susan you will know your purpose in life. I feel I found it between my art, which brings great joy to others and to myself - and giving help to other thalidomiders around the world. If they have any questions, they can come to me. I hope when I'm gone, people can look back and say I helped them." Wagner-White said she didn't think she'd ever get married. "I met Rae, and we meshed so well," she said. They've been together 12 years; married since 2012.

"All my life, I didn't hide being gay," she said. "But I didn't scream it, either. I'm not that type." She said she was 16 when she came out to her mother. "It was a really rough time," she said. There may be a book one day. But finding Rae, and embracing her artistic talent, has enabled Wagner-White to live her best life.

STUDIO THEATRE ART SHOWCASES Raby notes that unlike other art galleries, the Studio Theatre gallery is only open to the public when there is an event on at the theatre. "This can include one of

our plays, a movie night, or some other theatre rental," he wrote. "Studio Theatre Perth is putting on Dan Needle's comedy 'Ed's Garage' from Sept 19 to 29. There will be one or two movie nights during the month as well." Dates will be released soon. The theatre has always had an art gallery display area and when we expanded our space and created a new lobby, the theatre built quite a nice art gallery area. As curator of the gallery, I have a different exhibition for each of the theatre's eight plays during the calendar year. So eight exhibitions per year. Raby said he typically tries to feature local artists. "Many have been from the Rideau Lakes Artists Association," he said. "This association does have artists from as far away as Ottawa. So not all exhibitors are truly local. I also try to exhibit art work that features a variety of mediums and/or very unique styles." Jane Stott, one of the theatre's directors mentioned Wagner-White and her work to Raby a few weeks ago, who in turn "tracked her down. We met at the theatre and Susan graciously agreed to exhibit with us. Her work is outstanding! I'm so looking forward to her exhibition."

FRIENDS OF THE TAY WATERSHED HOST EDUCATIONAL EVENT Climate change is upon us, bringing potential challenges to our water, our lakes and streams, our properties - and the general environment. On Saturday, Aug. 17, at Perth's Farmers Market at the Crystal Palace, the Friends of the Tay Watershed are showcasing the potential impacts, and the assistance and programs available to help mitigate and adapt to it. At the Friends' 19th annual Watershed Discovery Day, you'll find experts from eight regional organizations ready to provide answers to your questions on water (too much, too little, keeping it clean,) and on their programs for its care and maintenance. The Rideau Valley Conservation Authority

(RVCA) will be there featuring their Shoreline Naturalization Program available to Tay Watershed residents at no cost for 2019. Watersheds Canada, Rideau Environmental Action League, the Town of Perth, Lanark County Stewardship Council and Ottawa Riverkeeper will provide updates on their services and activities. For the children, the Perth and District Union Library will have Story Time from 11 till noon. At the Friends' Fish Pond, children may try their skill at identifying the invasive species of our area. RVCA will be there with microscopes, so everyone (young and older) can get a close-up look at the various critters that swim around in our lakes and streams.

An interactive wetlands display will demonstrate how our watershed marshes, bogs and fens mitigate flooding and drought and protect our wells and surface water. A morning highlight will be the 10:00 a.m. presentation of the $1,000 Water Guardian Bursary. The recipient student, Amanda Miller, is a graduate of Perth and District Collegiate Institute, majoring in environmental science at Queen's University. This bursary is made possible through the generous sponsorship of Little Stream Bakery. Come out to the Perth Farmers Market, pick up some wonderful fresh produce, baking, crafts and perennials, enjoy a bite, and take part in our Watershed Discovery Day. The Farmers Market is located at the Crystal Palace in downtown Perth, overlooking the Tay Basin. For more information, visit www.taywatershed.ca

SADNESS AND HAPPINESS BROUGHT TEARS TO YOUNG MARY SHE WOULD WELL UP AT THE DROP OF A HAT, COLUMNIST MARY COOK RECALLS

My sister Audrey said I spent too much time worrying about things that would never happen. That did little to put my mind at ease. Between her telling me that, and Father saying my bladder was too close to my eyes and that's why I cried so much, I came to the conclusion that I was a mess. I was sitting in the grape arbour, my favourite place when I was either sad or had to think. That day it was a combination of both. I spent little effort pushing the swing with my feet, as I contemplated what both

MARY COOK Column

Audrey and Father said more than once. My worry had to do with getting ready to go back to school in a few weeks. I worried that Mother wouldn't have enough money to buy the books I needed, and I would be the only one at the Northcote School sitting at my desk with an empty drawer. Then I started to think of what Father had said about my bladder being close to my eyes and that was why I cried at the drop of a hat. I had no idea what a bladder was, but I gathered it had something to do with tears, so it must have been up around my neck someplace. I felt around my neck, but couldn't feel

anything that could be considered unusual. My thoughts turned to the reasons why I cried so much. I put my head back on the slatted seat and looked through the few spaces between the ample leaves of the grape vines above me. I know I cried a lot when I knew it was the day Father would be slaughtering to fill the smoke house. I vowed I would never eat a morsel of meat that came to our table, but of course by the time the meat had been smoked and cured, I had long since forgotten the day of doom, as I called it. I certainly cried when my hateful brother Emerson teased me about my freckles and red hair. I cried because there wasn't a thing I could do about either. And I wouldn't dare fight back, reminding him he too had red hair and

freckles ... I would pay dearly for the deed. And I couldn't remember the many times bad Marguerite had brought me to tears. Of course, I wouldn't dare let her know it. When she made fun of what I was wearing - made by Mother and not bought at Walker's Store in Renfrew like her fine clothes or when she reminded me she had a pony and how sad it was that all we had on our farm were work horses. Yes, that too could bring me to tears. I always seemed to cry when we had relatives come to visit, and they were getting ready to go home. I was sure we would never see them again. Or I would cry because our house would quiet down, and Mother and her relatives singing in harmony at night would be over, and there would be nothing to do but sit at the

pine table and look through Eaton's catalogue. That could certainly start the tears flowing. I pushed the swing gently and in my mind's eye I could picture all the things that made me cry. Sometimes, I thought, I cried from sheer joy too. When Miss Crosby praised me for the neatness of my workbooks or said what a good speller I was, I would have to close my eyes tight to stop the tears of happiness spilling over onto my desk. And often at night, when we were all gathered in the kitchen before bedtime, we kids and Mother at the table doing our own thing, I would look at Father slumped over in the chair by the Findlay Oval. I would see the look of pure exhaustion, his hands limp on the Ottawa Farm Journal, his pipe resting on his chest. I would feel the ut-

most sadness that he had to work so hard to put food on our table and clothes on our backs. And the tears would come. Well, there was nothing I could do about my bladder. If God had put it close to my eyes, that's what I would have to live with. Maybe I would grow out of whatever ailed me, and I would stop worrying, or cry at the drop of a hat. McLEISH, June It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our wife, mother, grandmother and friend, June McLeish, aged 66, on August 6, 2019, due to cancer. In her final days she was surrounded by family and music just as she wished. She was born July 8, 1953 in St John, NB, and was lovingly chosen by Mary (D) and Omar Kumm (D) to be their child. She had a zest for life and welcomed everyone into her home regardless of race, monetary status, age or sexual preference. She believed in seeing the truth and beauty in all people. She is survived by her loving husband of 22 years, Ian McLeish, her daughters Lana Spicer (Craig), Valerie Beale (Fraser). Eila McLeish, her sons, Christopher Gibson, Wyatt Boucher, and Wilson McLeish. She is also survived by her numerous grandchildren Amber (Dan), Samantha (Mike), Ayden, Maia, Ryan and Tyler and by her great grandchildren Benjamin and Riley. She was the matriarch of our family, a source of constant joy and light, gracing every room she entered with her beautiful and infectious smile. June was a person who gave back to the community and always tried to be the champion of those that were in the most need. She loved animals with a passion, especially cats and her home was always a haven for them. Ulysses, Duffy, Alice and Gizmo will miss her deeply. In lieu of flowers you can send donations to the following organizations: Mel’s Farm for Rescued Animals https://www.melsfarm.ca/ or the Canadian Cancer Society https://www.cancer.ca/en/?region=o n. We will be holding a Celebration of Life on Saturday, September 21, 2019. Time and place to follow. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. The world was a better place because of her <3

PALMER, John Gray November 6, 1921 - August 7, 2019 After living a full, rich life Gray Palmer (son of the late Mabel and Jack Palmer) quietly slipped away at the GWM Hospital in Perth. His 97 years began and finished at his dearly loved Christie Lake. He had called Mont Jolie Quebec his home during WWII. Irene and Gray resided in Perth to raise their family until retirement led them once more back to Christie Lake. Gray was predeceased by his wife Irene (Poole), his brother Elwood (in his 100th year) and his oldest son Robert. Left to carry on the Palmer tradition are; his daughter-in-law Dawn (late Bob), son Doug and his wife Judy, his grandsons: Shaun (Christine), Cory (Nicole) Derek (Laura) and his great-grandchildren, Amelia, Olivia and Ellie. Gray will also be dearly missed by his stepchildren: Lorna and Wayne and their families, many nieces, nephews and cherished friends. We will forever remember Gray’s quick wit, excellent memory, his carpentry skills and his ability to entertain others with colourful stories of “days gone by”. Gray enlightened many as he regaled tales and actions of early days at Christie Lake. Our family deeply appreciates the efforts of so many who helped Gray fulfill his last wish of living at the lake up until his last few days. As his challenges became greater many agencies offered love, support and compassion to Gray and his family. We are humbled, grateful and beyond thankful to Dr. Gauthier and his staff, dedicated Bayshore caregivers, Perth Home Support, the amazingly supportive Veterans Affairs and last but certainly not least, his dear devoted friends, family and neighbours. Friends and family may pay their respects at the Blair & Son Funeral Home, 15 Gore St. W., Perth on Sunday, August 11, 2019 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A private family service will take place at Elmwood Cementer at a later date. In remembrance of Gray, donations may be made to the Cancer ‘Wheels of Hope’ or the Great War Memorial Hospital Foundation would be appreciated.

McTAVISH, Dixie Lee 1957 - 2019 With heavy hearts and deep sorrow we announce the death of Dixie McTavish. She was the outstanding and loving mother of Andrew (Kelly) James and Leah (Shawn Kuruneru) James, wife of Kevin James (1978-2010), and proud grandmother of Lydia, Maren, Ruth, and Edison James. The cherished daughter of Ruth and Bob McTavish, and beloved sister of Art and Steve McTavish. Dixie passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 7, 2019 at Kingston General Hospital with her family by her side. She will be remembered for her generous heart, her kind, gentle spirit, and positive and cheery attitude. She taught us to enjoy the small things in life and to always see the best in every situation, person, and place. Her curious spirit lead her to earn a BA from Queens University and a Bachelor of Education from University of Ottawa. She held careers as a florist, a business owner and partner, and in recent years, an educational assistant with the Upper Canada District School Board. Dixie will be remembered as a creative and energetic soul. She was an avid drawer, gardener, and in her younger years, a painter. Her family will treasure the paintings and drawings that she has left with us from years past. She will also be remembered as a loving mother. Her commitment to her children was profound. It was certainly remembered over the past months when Dixie needed her children’s attention and care. This lesson in love will not be forgotten. Though her time with us was too short, her spirit lives on in her children, grandchildren and all the friends and people she touched along her journey. Our family would like to thank the teams at Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospitals and the Cancer Center of Southeastern Ontario at Kingston General Hospital for their exceptional care. Dixie’s family and friends will gather for a visitation to be held at Blair and Son Funeral home, 15 Gore St. W., Perth on Tuesday, August 13 from 2:00 - 4:00 and 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. A funeral will be held at St. Paul’s United Church, 25 Gore St. W. Perth on Wednesday, August 14th at 10:30 a.m. A reception will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Terry Fox Foundation or to the Canadian Cancer Society “Wheels of Hope”.

MOORE, Berneice Eleanor Berneice Eleanor Moore (nee Reed) passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday, August 14 at her home In South Elmsley, Ontario at the age of 87. She was born February 28, 1932 to Mary Ann and Alan (Bud) Reed and spent her early life on the family farm outside of Elrose, Saskatchewan. A survivor of polio in her youth she never let adversity get her down. Following a brief stint at secretarial school she joined the Canadian Air Force where she met and married the love of her life Cecil Moore. The pair eventually settled down in Yorkton Saskatchewan until retirement brought them east to their dream home outside of Lombardy Ontario where they spent another 25 happy years together. Never shy to make her opinion known, Berneice loved her family, gardening, spending time exploring the land surrounding their property and in her later years she could be seen eagerly zipping about in her Gator on B6. Pre-deceased by Cecil in 2015, she now goes to join him for their next adventure together. She will be missed by her family, daughters, Mary, Donna and Susan, sons Russell and David, as well as her 13 grandchildren and 11 greatgrandchildren. CATON, Richard James “Rick” December 2, 1951 - August 5, 2019 It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of Rick Caton in the Perth hospital. Rick passed away peacefully on August 5, 2019 after a courageous struggle with brain cancer. Rick was the dearly loved husband of Pamela Grant and father to Kristina Russell (John Richard) and Janna Holmes (Andrew). Proud grandfather of Jack and Max Holmes. Loving brother of Lori McIntee (Gonzalo Bustos) and brother-in-law of Gordon Grant (the late Maryke McCarron). Loving uncle of Kate McIntee (Steve Cote) and Kerry McIntee (Amy). Fondly remembered by Gail Caton. Predeceased by his parents James Edgar Caton and Phyllis Marjorie Caton (nee Parkes). Born in Port Dalhousie, Ontario, Rick developed a love of all nature, and especially of birdlife, at a young age. He pursued this interest by working as a naturalist in his younger years, and eventually taking up bird carving. His personal knowledge of his subjects allowed him to capture the attitude and stature of each of the birds he carved. He was also a talented musician; Rick played the guitar and sang, in bands, in bars, and around the campfire. Witty and charming, he enjoyed life to the fullest. Family and friends will gather at the Blair & Son Funeral Home, 15 Gore St. W., Perth on Sunday, August 11, 2019 for a service to honour his life at 11:00 a.m. followed by a reception in the Blair & Son Family Centre. Following the reception, all are invited for a Celebration of His Life at the family home on Mary Street. The family extends thanks to all those who helped to brighten Rick’s days as he faced health challenges, including Bill Gibson, Bob Reid, PSW Mike Thomas, nurse Leslie Richmond, Dr. Taylor Ferrier, the nurses on the second floor of the PSFDH, and others. We are grateful for the wonderful compassionate support offered in our community, both on an individual level and through our healthcare system. For those who so desire, donations can be made to the Foundation of the Great War Memorial Hospital, or the Canadian Cancer Foundation.

A “family first” guy who cherished his backyard get-togethers, he was also an avid Hunter who marked every season with a trip to the hunting camp where he thoroughly enjoyed the company of his life-long friends. He travelled many roads, loved life, and practiced his Christian Faith. In the end, he was not afraid of what was to come. Rest in Peace Dick, you’ve earned your place among the stars.

April 14,1942 - August 17, 2017

Engaged?

Dick loved being an engaged and active member of the community. He was always ready to lend a hand, and there were a lot of happy memories shared after the service over lunch with family and friends from near and far.

It broke our hearts to lose you, But you did not go alone A part of us went with you the day God took you home. If tears could build a stairway and heartaches make a lane we would walk our way to heaven and bring you back again. In life we loved you dearly in death we love you still in our hearts you hold a place no one could ever fill. Love, Phyllis, Joanne, Andrew, Devin, Oryst and Muffie

The family of the late Murray Lee would like to express their gratitude to all who cared for him during his final illness. To Father McNally who’s visits gave Murray so much comfort, thank you. To those who gave him personal care, sometimes in difficult circumstances, especially Hennie, Jan, Brad, Joanne, Angie and Angela thank you. We also thank the nurses as well as Dr’s Mclean and Charenko who were kind enough to make home visits. And finally, Blair & Son Funeral Home Perth for their professional and sensitive handling of the arrangements.

You never said I’m leaving, You never said goodbye. You were gone before I knew it, And only God knows why. A million times I needed you A million times I cried. If love alone could have saved you, You never would have died. In life I loved you dearly In death I love you still, In my heart you hold a place, That no one could ever fill. It broke my heart to lose you, But you didn’t go alone. For part of me went with you, The day God called you home.

To those who arrived at our door laden with comfort foods and generous helpings of hugs; to those who remember us in their prayers, and those who reached out with floral tributes, cards, phone calls, and thoughtful donations to Trinity Church, and to the Air Cadets; to everyone who took pause to acknowledge our loss - please know that every gesture of kindness and caring has brought a humbling measure of comfort to a difficult moment in time. Our thanks to the members of the Royal Canadian Legion and the Air Force Association for honouring Dick with such a profound and touching service. Dick would have been so proud. To Reverend Barr who found just the right words to bring understanding and enlightenment to a time of confusion and loss. To Stephen Blair - the consummate professional and unerring voice of compassion and reason.
