FIRE DEVASTATES PERTH FAMILY HOME DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@ metroland.com A family home in south Perth has been badly damaged by an early-morning fire. A family residence at the intersection of Beckwith Street East and Cockburn Street at around 2 a.m. on Tuesday, July 23. Perth fire department Chief Trevor Choffe reported that there were multiple 911 calls received in

the wee hours of the morning, and while six people, including three small children, reside at the home, only two people were present when the fire broke out, "one homeowner and another acquaintance were home," said Choffe. Both were able to "exit without injury." The younger children were "away on a trip," added Choffe. The fire is "still under investigation," said Choffe, speaking on Thursday, July 25. The Canadian Red

Cross is currently helping the family, as are family members. The home "is not going to be repaired any time soon," said Choffe. "It'll be tough to have a quick turnaround." "It's a shock to see something like that," said Coun. Barry Smith, who had driven by the house on the morning of Wednesday, July 24, with charred children's toys like dolls littered among the burned remains of the house.

She stressed that there is a desperate need for housing. Between January and March of this year, there were 12 people sleeping outside in the winter weather in Lanark County. Three people alone were believed to be sleeping out in the woods near the Bethel Pentecostal Church on the edge of Smiths Falls.

Forget go big or go home, now it's go small and call it your home. As part of a collaboration between Cornerstone Landing Youth Services and Algonquin College's Perth campus, the first tiny home for at-risk youth was unveiled on Wednesday, July 24. "This project has been about three years in the making," said Cornerstone's board chair, Terrilee Kelford, at Perth campus. "So glad it's done." Now, it's a matter of getting it, "literally on the ground." Already, "someone has offered to put it on their land," in a rural township. "My goal is to have it on

the ground before the first snow," she said. Kelford admitted that "I teared up when I saw it for the first time," she recalled of the finished home, and that she may do so again when she hands over the keys to a youth in need of shelter. The tiny home cost about $78,000 to build, and the trailer cost $5,200 $20,533.61 through fundraising, $32,767.41 in donations, and $30,000 from Algonquin College, Perth. "I would ideally like to have at least one (tiny home) in each town," in the county, including Perth, Smiths Falls, and Carleton Place. "I want these everywhere." Though the blade is a bit more blunt than a fully finished instrument, they are still sharper and more realistic, in look and weight, than other swords he has seen used in theatre fight scenes. "The blades bend," with those ones, said MacKay, during an interview at his forge on the afternoon of Monday, July 8. He has acted in BarnDoor Productions in the past, like The Maltese Falcon, and been involved in the Perth Community Choir. When the blades as other theatres bend, "they try to hammer it out for the next show." However, director David Jacklin "likes to do things right," said MacKay. However, "he doesn't have the

budget of the Shaw Festival," said MacKay. That's why Jacklin has been working on the handles, which he works on the metal part himself. "I offered to put an edge on them, but I don't think he wants the actors cut up!" he joked. You can however, "cut a tree," with these new swords - he even pointed to a nearby wooden post, with clear cut marks on them, where he had tested the swords. "What takes time is ... polishing them," he said. While the actors are practising with children's Nerf swords during rehearsals, "I'm curious to see how he choreographs it."

SELF TAUGHT MacKay said he started his blacksmithing career "by accident," 22 years ago. He worked for Parks Cana-

da at the time. Quite simply, he was asked if he wanted to work in the blacksmithing department. At the time, he knew next to nothing about the craft, though he did have a BA in arts and history, and a BA in music from Queen's University. It was "a career by accident," he said with a laugh. "A happy accident. I didn't wake up one day and have an epiphany." He was mainly selftaught, learning from books, making "mistakes, burning things," in those pre-YouTube days. He may not have had an epiphany, but he did realize, about three weeks in, that he was well and truly enjoying what he was doing. "I'm getting paid to play!" he recalled.

He took up blacksmithing more full-time when Parks Canada announced cuts in 2012 and "they reduced and curbed it so that there was no more blacksmithing." He retrofitted the horse barn on his wife's old family farm into his forge. "I built that one myself," he says, pointing to the nearby fire place where he heats the metal. As for his other equipment, "it's not like there's a huge call for them!" he joked of the 15 anvils around his workshop. As for his own personal anvil, he designed it himself and had it made for him in Paris, Ont. There is "almost no used equipment," anymore in the blacksmithing world. "I try and do everything I can (to make sure my equipment is) made in Canada."

TEACHING SHOP His blacksmith shop, Forged in Canada, on the outskirts of Perth off of Highway 7, is a teaching facility. He has facilitated corporate team-building events, family events, even a bachelorette party. "We will make it fun for them," he said. He also does custom orders and heritage renovation work, such as at the Murney Tower National Historic Site in Kingston, for which "I did all of the metal work. I do a lot of restoration work," such as the work done at Fort Wellington in Prescott.

REALITY TV, THEATRE MacKay sees the History Channel show Forged In Fire as mostly a good news story for his industry. "Anything that pro-

motes the world of blacksmithing can't be bad." He prefers to get the word out about blacksmithing the old-fashioned way, face-to-face. He's taken part in demonstrations at the annual Historica fair at the Perth Legion for elementary schoolchildren, and at the annual Perth Garlic Festival. He is delighted to see when people get really excited about the craft, but he smiles when a student, after taking a five-day course, believes that they can then go out and make a living right away at blacksmithing. "You need 10,000 hours to make a living at it," he said. He's fairly easygoing about people wanting to visit his facility. "People can drop in and see how the thing works. I'm fine," he said.

A DIFFERENT BUILD Regulatory issues aside, the build itself was not without its hassles. "If you've ever built an IKEA cabinet, the second one is a lot easier!" joked Yuergen Beck, president of

Redwood Homes 1000 Islands Ltd. "We definitely learned some things that will be easier next time." On this particular build, "there were a lot of things that you had to think six steps ahead." Beck reiterated what Graff had said earlier about these tiny homes exceeding the building code. "If anybody ever says to you this is like a mobile home, it's absolutely not. This is well beyond minimum building code standards. It was a lot more detailed and meticulous and well-built than your conventional boxed house," said Beck. Overall, "it was a great project." "Now that it's here ... everything becomes real, a bit more tangible," said Christopher Hahn, the dean of Algonquin College's Perth campus. "There is a multiplier effect."

exceeds it," said architect Gordon Graff. "This is a movable structure ...(but) it is a very rigid structure," much like a traditional house. It even has tiedowns that would help it withstand, say, a hurricane. "In the building code, there is a perception that ... 508-square-feet is the minimum that the Ontario Building Code would allow," he said. "There is a clause that is very visible in there that states that if your living and kitchen space is combined, that your minimum square footage can be quite small," he said. (Kelford jumped in to say that she believed it to be 143-square-feet.) Jason Takerer, who worked on the project as an energy efficiency consultant, said that quite a few municipalities have restrictions against trailers and trailer parks. "When most municipalities see this structure, the bells go off: 'Oh, this is a mobile home,'" Takerer said, which they are not. (Kelford said earlier that she had had municipalities tell her that "I do not want trailer parks in my township," she recalled.) Along with NIMBYism (Not In My Back Yard), he warned that "there might be regulatory barriers and policy barriers in place for municipalities that prevent this." There are also concerns about the waste generated from this kind of home too, he noted. This type of tiny house would require its own septic system, he said. However, "we overcame this barriers, to a large degree. We fleshed those details out." Another challenge that Takerer sees is one of perception, that these houses are too small to live in.

FIFTH ANNUAL PERTH RIBFEST INTRODUCES NEW RECYCLING PROGRAM PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com In its fifth year, Perth's Ribfest managed to cut waste down from 21 garbage cans to just three. Head organizer and long-time Rotary Club member, Jim Peden, explained that a new recycling program at the event sees guests bring their scraps and dishes over to volunteers, who sort the compostable products from the recyclables. "In previous years, we'd been running a crew emptying garbage cans and filling dumpsters, which contained all kinds of stuff that could be recycled or composted," he said. The organic waste is picked up by the Town of Perth and taken to the composting facility, and recyclables are sorted by glass, plastic and paper products.

The fifth annual Ribfest was put on by the Rotary Club of Perth, with help from a team of 75 to 100 vol-

unteers. All proceeds from the event help support local non-profit organizations, including Camp Mer-

rywood, The Table Community Food Centre, the Lanark Highlands Youth Centre, and more. The weekend-long event was held in Last Duel Park from July 26 to 28, showcasing the best of barbecue: pulled pork, smoked beef brisket, grilled chicken, and saucy ribs. Local musicians are also at the forefront of the event, as Peden says he

tries his best to stick to 'under a mile talent.' The festival's volunteer coordinator, Claire Smith, said an average of 10,000 guests attend each year. "It's really been a great support with all these volunteers," she said. "They've been outstanding." Peden said the event continues to grow, and nearly $25,000 is raised each year.

FORMER FIRE CHIEF PLEADS GUILTY TO BILKING TAXPAYERS OUT OF $65,000 GERALD BENNETT'S SENTENCING HEARING SEPT. 3 LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com A former eastern Ontario fire chief pleaded guilty to charges of theft, fraud and breach of trust Monday July 8 in Brockville criminal court. Sentencing for Gerald Bennett, 61, of Elgin, who was the chief for the Town of Gananoque with contracted services to the Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands (TLTI), will be held Sept. 3. It was back in 2016 that Bennett was charged with 15 counts of fraud, six counts of uttering forged documents and three counts of breach of trust. Shelley Fournier, chief administrative officer of Gananoque, who was the former director of corporate services for the Town of Perth before leaving for the new position in Gananoque in 2015, spoke with the Record News on Wednesday, July 10, about the court case. Fournier said she spearheaded the investigation, uncovering schemes and

THE INVESTIGATION The investigation into charges against Bennett began in 2016, and Fournier said Monday, July 8 was a day of closure. "It was exhausting for sure. It started back in September 2016 when we became aware of it," she said. "I'm relieved that the matter has finally concluded ... I think I was the only one that has seen this thing through from beginning to end. With the election, the turnover in council, in the township a different chief administrative officer, different mayor, treasurer ... " Fournier provided a victim impact statement in the case, which she shared with this newspaper. "Monday was a day of reckoning. It was the opportunity to speak and let the truth be told. And of course, by him pleading guilty, he recognized he was guilty of all these (charges)," Fournier said. Bennett was an employee of the town, with services contracted to the township. He was placed on paid-administrative leave in September 2016 and fired in November. There are now two full-time fire chiefs for the town and the township respectively Steve Tiernan in Gananoque, and Rick Lawson in TLTI. As for a dual role for one chief, Fournier said they're a little hesitant to get back into that relationship, but she sees the township and the town moving forward in a positive direction. "I just think we should close the book on this one," she said. "Emergency services are so important. We really need to have a good

working relationship with one another." Fournier not only has a deep connection to this professionally, but on a personal level she's married to a retired fire chief, Steve Fournier, who was the Perth chief for many years before retiring in 2016. He then moved to an interim chief position for the Township of Rideau Lakes, a role he no longer holds. Currently, he is the reeve in Drummond North

Elmsley Township. He was acclaimed during the 2018 municipal election. "Because my husband is a retired fire chief, I hold the position in such high regard," Fournier said. "I think it hurt me more than what most CAOs would feel. I don't want this one individual to reflect badly on the legacy my husband had, or the legacy of other fire chiefs across Ontario." going through fake invoices and providing those findings to the OPP's antirackets unit. Through searching Bennett's emails, she found invoices from people to whom Bennett was selling the town's products - including Lanark Highlands, BBD & E and Arnprior fire departments. "It was a very difficult time, realizing it wasn't just one transgression. It was over a number of years and a number of different ways he was doing it - creating fake invoices, selling town property to other fire departments." Fournier said Bennett sold analogue pagers to these other departments at a reduced rate with cheques made out to the fire association, not the town, who owned the property. "All the revenue wasn't coming to the town," she said. "The town doesn't have access to the association's books. Once we saw one invoice from Arnprior that the fire association expensed them, I asked the association for their books and that's when it really unfolded. Now is the time of year when homeowners may see more bats than usual, and the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark Health Unit offers advice to keep family and pets safe against rabies, histoplasmosis, distacemper and mange. These nocturnal animals feed most actively two or three hours following sunset. They are efficient insect controllers eating about three times their body weight. Bats typically have their babies in June and come August many of the young bats are looking for their own roosting sites. Many bats will roost and hibernate in attics. Although bats are beneficial, they can carry diseases as listed above. Approximately three per cent of bats carry the rabies virus. The most common signs of rabies in bats are the inability to fly and resting in unusual places such as the ground or floor. It is important to remember many of the bats that get into our homes are healthy bats and are looking for a way out. If you find a bat in your home and are sure that there was no human or animal contact, try to confine the bat to one room by closing the door of the room. Open a window or door to the outside and then turn out the lights; the bat should fly out early in the evening. Be sure to wear gloves and other protective clothing when dealing with a bat. If you are bitten, or if saliva from a bat gets into your eyes, nose, mouth or a wound, wash the affected area thoroughly and get medical attention immediately. Should you find a bat in your home and are unsure if it has bitten a family member, contact your health care provider and the health unit to determine if treatment is required. Prior to calling though, check for fresh bites and scratches that may be a result of contact with the bat. Bat proofing your house is necessary when they get inside your living space. It is advisable to contact a pest management company or a wildlife conservation agency for assistance with bat-proofing. To protect pets from rabies it is important to vaccinate them. Rabies vaccination is mandatory in Ontario for domestic cats and dogs. The health unit, in partnership with local veterinarians and municipalities, will be holding the annual rabies clinics Sept. 18 and 25. The cost is $20 each. "This woman hasn't done her research." That was part of an amusing bon voyage message I received from a colleague when I emailed a group of folks to remind them I was fleeing the country with my daughter to attend an international aerobic gymnastics competition in Phoenix, Arizona. My colleague remarked on Arizona being one of his favourite states, but to go

there in July? Yeesh. Bad planning! I didn't have much (any) say in the choice of venue nor the timing, but I will concur that Arizona is pretty amazing. This is the third time that the competition has been held in Phoenix. The first year we had the opportunity to take a day trip to the Grand Canyon, and I was truly awed by the diversity and beauty of the state. From the desert in the south to the forests that look like northern Ontario, and of course, the geological splendour that is the canyon, it really is quite something. I mean, there are palm trees and cacti and little lizards! It's just awesome. It's also true that, the first time, I hadn't really done any research. I knew anecdotally, as I suspect a lot of warmth-seeking Canadians do, that it's hot in

Arizona - "but it's a dry heat." Right. Unless you're going there in July and August, apparently. I'll always remember that first time we stepped out of the airport in Phoenix and were hit by a wall of heat. "I wonder if this is what a blast furnace feels like," I remember thinking. Not only that, but it was humid. Clearly we had been misled. Imagine the hottest day in eastern Ontario (perhaps one of those scorcher days under the "heat dome" we experienced in mid-July with the humidity). Then add about 10 degrees. Welcome to Phoenix! There are diverging stories from the locals on this (and I haven't done any other research to verify or contradict it). What I was told that first year is that they have a monsoon sea-

son in July and August, which is when they get rain and humidity. Stands to reason, I suppose; has to rain sometime. We also heard, though, that this is a relatively new thing in Arizona and that they are not used to getting that kind of humidity. They blame climate change (although I understand climate change doesn't exist in the States, but I digress). It reminds me a bit of when Groom-boy and I flew to Thunder Bay (speaking of modes of transportation that are contributors to climate change) about 15 years ago for a wedding. We left Ottawa on a wickedly hot/humid day and thought we might die in the little plane as it cooked on the tarmac before takeoff. We were on the milk run with Bearskin Airlines, and with every landing and take off we

found it getting progressively cooler. When we landed in Thunder Bay, it was beautiful and cool, and, by our standards, not muggy at all. Yet the locals there were "dying" from the humidity, which registered an extra degree or two on the humidex (or "feels like" index). We were thinking: "you people don't know humidity," as we basked in the gloriousness of being out of the swampy eastern Ontario air. It was beautiful there. So as we endured that nastiness of high heat and humidity at home in mid-

July, I just kept telling myself we were "training for Phoenix." And I was comforted by the memory of air-conditioned venues and many on-site pools. We cope. Many people aren't so lucky. I am grateful to have the opportunity to experience this, and I pledge to research why it's humid in Arizona. Just for fun. COST CUTTING When asked if this move was a cost-cutting measure, UCDSB chair of the board, trustee John McAllister, replied, "Yes, it was." He explained that the school board was facing a deficit of $10.7 million, and to pare this down, there was an agreement that "cuts would be made across the board," while, at the same time, making sure to "minimize the fallout to the classroom as much as we could," he said. McAllister recalled that the board had tried a similar "twinning" in the past, and "we want to maintain at least one administrator in the school ... a strong administrative presence," whether that is a principal, a vice principal, or office administrator, on any given school day. PERTH FIGURE SKATER CAPTURES GOLD MEDAL IN GERMANY LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com Carol Ann Lehovich has only been back on the ice for eight years, but her hard work has paid off with a recent gold medal in an adult competition in Germany. The member of the Perth Figure Skating Club competed in the 2019 International Adult Figure Skating Competition in Oberstdorf, Germany and earned gold in ladies III artistic, and a silver and bronze in the ladies III free skating event. The competition was help May 19-15 and was thee 15th year of the prominent adult figure skating competition, which attracts skaters from around the world. This year, 600 competitors from 34 International Skating Union member countries participated with Canada having a 54-

member team - 10 of whom were from Ontario. "The Germany competition was amazing," Lehovich told the Perth Courier. "Competing as an adult is a whole different experience. Everyone is cheering for each other; we share many stories about achievements and struggles." Most adults are skating because they love the sport, she said. "It's great exercise and the competitions are fun nerve-racking, but fun. Winning on the international level was pretty special, but the whole experience was special regardless of my placement," Lehovich said. Lehovich does a lot of practising and completed tests in skills and dance. In February 2016, she attended an adult seminar at the Minto Skating Club in Ottawa where she learned

that there is a whole other world out there of adult skaters "that I didn't know existed." At that time, she said, she decided she would start to compete. "I started to work really hard," she said. "I got two programs put together and trained very hard that summer. My very first competition as an adult was the first North American International competition in Vancouver. A spinoff from Germany. My hard work paid off then as well. I took gold in both of my skates in September 2016. I was then off the ice for months with a heel/bursitis injury." As a child, she skated at the Perth Figure Skating Club until she was 15. She still does the majority of training in Perth three times a week from September until the end of February.

"Usually Rideau Lake Figure Skating Club will have shoulder-season sessions," she said. "Summer ice is harder to get to. In the past I've skating with the Brockville club in Kemptville, Athens club in Smiths Falls, Rideau club in Manotick, Golbourne club in Stittsville and pick up ice at the Sens Plex. It's really hard to stay dedicated in the summer with all the travel to get ice." Lehovich has competed for the last few years. She took part at the provincial level in 2018 in Kingston. "That was great," she said. "Nice and close. I had my husband, sisters, my children and even my grandchild there to cheer me on. It was also nice to have my coach Lise (Drummond) with me. I usually don't have a coach at the competition because the are not close by." Drummond has been

coaching Lehovich since 2016. "I am so happy and excited for Carol Ann's success and very proud of every step she took to reach the podium in Germany," Drummond said. "Carol Ann's hard work, passion, spirit, perseverance and determination has been an inspiration to so many, and I look forward to working with her to achieve her new goals this upcoming skating season as we prepare for the 2019 ISU North American Competition in Lake Placid in October." Lehovich said she skates because she loves it, it's fun and healthy. "It's the only exercise that I have stuck to," she said. "I would tell people young or old to just do it. Get out and try it. When ever I see someone from my childhood skating days I try to convince them to come back."

LOCAL HEALTH HUMAN RESOURCE COMMITTEE IN HIGH GEAR Recent news of the upcoming departure or retirement of several family physicians in Perth and Smiths Falls has highlighted the importance of the local Health Human Resources Committee (HHRC). The committee, reformatted and expanded in 2018, is a local initiative to co-ordinate and maximize the delivery of primary care health services. "We understand community members concerns when they hear about a family physician leaving," said HHRC chair Michele Bellows, CEO of Rideau Community Health Services (RCHS). "We want people to know that we're on this and are actively working to recruit primary care providers to our communities. Our goal is to ensure that every local resident who wants access to a primary care provider has one." The committee currently has 15 members representing the full range of local health and community leadership. This includes: Perth and Smiths Fall District Hospital

(PSFDH) CEO Dr. Barry Guppy and chief of staff Dr. Kate Stole; municipal leaders from Perth, Smiths Falls and MerrickvilleWolford; family physicians from local physician groups as well as members from the Nurse Practitioner Led-Clinic; Community Health Centres in the area, HealthForceOntario and Valley Heartland Economic Development. PSFDH's professional physician recruiter is also on the committee. RCHS CEO Bellows says that one of the challenges all communities in Ontario face when it comes to primary health care delivery is that no single authority or agency is responsible for it. "This is why it's so important that it's a community effort. As a community we're collectively responsible for ensuring we have great access to primary care," she said, noting that the committee met in midJuly and will again in early August. "With our committee and community partners we're creating a strong and integrated primary care community through-

out the entire area." At present, the HHRC is focused on developing concrete near-term bridging solutions for local patients who will lose a family physician. As a permanent coordinating body, the HHRC will also develop a longerterm co-ordinated health human resources plan to meet the changing and growing needs of the Smiths Falls, Perth and surrounding communities. PSFDH CEO Dr. Guppy notes that since 2013 the Perth and Smiths Falls communities' ongoing recruitment efforts have enabled successful recruitment of physicians who specialize in in-patient care, emergency physicians and several family physicians. "We have a great community," said Dr. Guppy. "We've successfully recruited in the past, and patients should feel reassured that we're working as a total community to build on this tradition of success." PHYSICIAN ASSISTANTS COULD PROVIDE HELP WITH PERTH'S DOCTOR SHORTAGE WHERE IS THE CARE?

DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@ metroland.com Could physician assistants (PA) help fill the gap as Perth scrambles to plug up the spots left by doctors leaving the general practice field? A former physician assistant, who now runs an Ottawa Valley family health team believes so. "It's a bit of a misnomer," Chris LeBouthillier, the executive director of the West Carleton Family Health Team, based in Carp, said of the very name of his profession. It's not a doctor-intraining, or "passing someone something," during an operation, he said during a Thursday, July 25 telephone interview. It's more of a "physician extender," he said. In a July 10 email from Andrea Tiwari, director of communications and stakeholder relations with the Canadian Association of Physician Assistants, based in Ottawa, wrote that PA's "are advance practice physicians who are trained in the medical model and practice autonomously under the supervision of a licensed physician. They diagnose illness, develop and manage treatment plans, prescribe medication, perform procedures, and assist in surgery."

LeBouthillier was a PA for seven years, working at a clinic in Toronto. Now, managing a health facility, he also employs a PA, as well as a nurse practitioner, and 12 doctors, which, he has found helps to "spread out the workload a bit." He has also seen the "controlled autonomy," that a PA has to see to be able to see a patient on their own. PAs almost always operate out of a doctor's office, and they are usually trained at the University of Toronto, McMaster University in Hamilton, Ont., or at the Canadian Forces Medical Services School in Borden, Ont., as well as at the University of Manitoba. The Northern Ontario School of Medicine, a school jointly run by Laurentian University in Sudbury, and Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, also offers a PA program. There are currently more than 541 PA's practicing in Canada, 300 of which are in Ontario. They are regulated in Alberta (since 2017), Manitoba (1999), and New Brunswick (2011). They sought to be regulated in Ontario in 2012, but this was rejected. They have been working within the Canadian Armed Forces, however, since 1984. According to a 2012 Min-

istry of Health and LongTerm Care report: • 95 per cent of doctors reported that PAs increased their own efficiency in providing care to patients. • PAs serving in emergency rooms were able to reduce wait times, and cut "left without being seen," rates in half. Or, put another way, "a PA can increase the number of bodies seen in a day," said LeBouthillier. Across eastern Ontario, there are PAs working at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario in Ottawa, The Ottawa Hospital, Hawkesbury and District General Hospital, and elsewhere. They can also work in more specialized areas, from oncology to gynecology, emergency rooms to orthopedic surgery. They can assist in other surgeries and can do minor procedures like mole removal, as well as do physical examinations.

RIDE-A-THON TO HELP EQUESTRIAN ATTEND WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com Little Rock Farm of Perth is home to some world-class riders, not to mention the extraordinary horses. If you were to mention the horses, one would recognize Vallata (Dale), as a world champion buckskin beauty. Just last year, Vallata earned Grand Champion Stallion at the International Bucksin Horse Association (IBHA) Warmup to the World, IBHA World Champion Open, two-year-old stallion, and IBHA Reserve World Champion, amateur stallion - all ages. But he's not done yet. Before he retires from the show ring at the end of this season, Vallata is heading to the world stage. This year, Amy Himmelman is taking her prized stallion to the Amer-

ican Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) Select World Champion Show in Fort Worth, Texas. It will be her first time attending this event, but not the first time to qualify. Last year, the costs were too high to attend; she also qualified in 1999. This is an invitationonly event, based on points accumulated over the previous year. The cost to participate? Between $8,000 and $10,000. "This is above and beyond words," Himmelman said of her trip to worlds this year. "I qualified last year, but couldn't afford it. It's a bucket list thing to do." To be competing at this world-class event with her beloved equine, is something that's she dreamed about for some time, she said. "I would be glad to place in the top five," she said. "Maybe a bronze."

If Vallata has his way, and he certainly knows his job when he gets into the ring, Himmelman said, he'll put on a grand champion performance.

After last year's win at the IBHA World Show in Cloverdale, Ind., Vallata accumulated a few more wins across Ontario, making Himmelman "prouder

than a peacock." Himmelman takes great pride in working all of her horses at Little Rock Farm, pouring her heart and soul into the champions she's creating. She has worked on a farm her entire life ... endless early mornings and late nights. Her passion is teaching children the love of horses. Her love of horses is evident with a stable full of red and blue ribbons, plaques, trophies, and certificates of her champion animals. "We do everything here," she said in terms of training her show horses. "On our own ... it's a big deal and it makes me proud. Here in Perth I have a stallion who's world class and has a lot of potential." Vallata has young offspring now, siring three fillies: A bay, a chestnut and a buckskin. Himmelman said she's going to work with two of them over the

To help Himmelman and her support staff - which includes "100 per cent sidekick" Brooklyn Burke, and her son, Eddie with his wife, Jenna, and boys Mason and Casey - get to Texas, Little Rock Farm is hosting a ridea-thon and cowboy obstacle event on Monday, Aug. 5 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Riders are encouraged to attend the fundraiser from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The cost is $30. THERE WAS NO ARGUING WITH MOTHER WHEN A STORM WAS BREWING IT WAS ALWAYS A PRODUCTION DURING A THUNDERSTORM, MARY COOK WRITES MARY COOK Column

All mother needed to hear was the far-away rumble of thunder, and she went right into action, preparing us for survival. She was sure it wasn't a case of IF the house was going to be struck with lightening, but WHEN. On that blistering hot day, the only thing different when we heard the thunder off in the distance, was that Aunt Vanetta was visiting us from Ottawa, and she was sure a match for Mother when it came to storms. The sky had darkened, the sounds of thunder were getting closer and lightening was flashing, brightening up the kitchen. So that meant the first

order of business was pulling down the green blinds, and lighting the coal oil lamp on the pine table. Of course, we five children had been herded into the house with the first peel of thunder, and Father, knowing full well what was happening inside, had vanished into the barn. We weren't allowed to sit anywhere near a window, so we were all in a huddle in the centre of the kitchen sitting like we were ready to play 'musical chairs'. And everyone had to wear rubber-soled running shoes. Of course, neither Audrey nor I owned running shoes, so there we sat with our feet in shoes that belonged to our brothers. It didn't matter, as long as they had rubber soles, which Mother was sure would save us from a lightening strike.

Aunt Vanetta had her Rosary beads in her hand, and a small bottle that looked exactly like the bottles Mother bought from the Raleigh man that held vanilla. We knew it was full of holy water, having been blessed at the Catholic church in Ottawa. Because Mother was so frightened, that's all it took for me to cringe and sit so close to my sister Audrey that she told me she couldn't breathe, and I had to huddle in my own chair, waiting for the lightening to strike our house, which I was sure would happen any minute. The heat in the kitchen was enough to suffocate us, but there we would have to sit until the peel of thunder was so faint, the storm sounded like it had moved off to another country. Before Aunt Vanetta settled down in a chair in the middle of the kitchen, she took the little vial of holy water and

I had no idea how that would prevent a lightening strike, but it sure made me feel better. Every time the thunder roared, Aunt Vanetta and Mother would cross themselves. Emerson, under his breath, said, "They're a little late, the clap of thunder only comes after the lightening" . My brothers thought the whole idea was sheer nonsense anyway. They would much rath-

er have waited out the storm in the barn with Father. At least they could play in the hay mow. But Mother wanted everyone in the house, and that's all there was too it. No arguing with Mother when there was a storm brewing. Mother always said thunder storms were worse in the country than they were in New York City. She said she felt safe amongst the tall buildings, all of which had spikes of lightening rods sticking out of their roofs. She also vowed that as soon as she could gather enough egg money, she was having the same rods put on the roof our house. Or course, that never happened. And so we sat out the storms, as Mother said, 'like sitting ducks', whatever that meant. As soon as the thunder was so faint, you could hardly hear it, Mother rolled up the blinds, threw open the kitchen door, and

blew out the lamp on the table. Aunt Vanetta had taken her bottle of holy water upstairs to the bedroom, and the whole house settled down. The running shoes were put back under the bench at the back door, and the brothers headed outside. As for me, I was grateful the storm hit in the daytime. When one came through the night, everyone had to get out of bed, get dressed, and go through the same routine of sitting in the middle of the kitchen wearing rubber soled shoes. That is, except Father, who slept through every night storm, sure that the old log house which had stood for generations wasn't about to go anywhere because of a bit of rain and thunder.

HOBBS, John William John (Jack) William Hobbs, age 76, of Lanark Highlands, Ontario, passed away peacefully, surrounded by close friends and family on July 23, 2019, at the Queensway Carleton Hospital in Ottawa, Ontario. Jack was an adventurous and spirit-driven soul who lived life to the fullest. He loved spending his time outdoors surrounded by nature at his lake, with his greatest love being his family. Jack was born to the late Elsie and John Hobbs in Montreal, Quebec. He is the beloved husband of Dorothy (nee Smith) Hobbs married 53 years and loving father to Sharon Hobbs (Chet) and John Hobbs (Karen). Jack is cherished by five grandchildren, Noah, Kai, Siobhan, Nicholas and Rowan. MATTHEWS, John Edmund December 1, 1942 - July 22, 2019 John Matthews passed away early Monday July 22, 2019. He leaves behind his devoted wife Pierrette, their son together, Justin Matthews and his four children Christa Matthews (Hanna), Matthew Dickson, Tamara Woods (Matthews) and Elizabeth Matthews. He is survived by his nine grandchildren and his brothers Wilmot, Robert and Don. He was predeceased by his sister Jennifer Connolly. John was an artist, with an eye for architecture, design and a great appreciation for nature. His love for travel took him around the globe, traveling throughout North America, Europe, India, South East Asia and Australia. He attended Mount Allison University, where he studied under esteemed artists such as Alex Colville. After graduating from The Art Students League in New York City in the 60’s, he was accepted to apprentice with Henry Moore in England where he was greatly inspired and would continue creating sculptures very reminiscent of Moore. John owned an historic farm and mill, Allan’s Mill, just west of Perth, Ontario, where he lovingly spent much of his adult life with his family and his dogs. His studio, in the beautifully restored mill was a place of much inspiration, where many of his creative sculptures were born. A great admiration for stone developed while restoring his home, it’s surrounding buildings and others. This included a building in the heritage town of Perth, for which he won the Heritage Canada Regional Award. John received many significant commissions in his lifetime. He was awarded by his Excellency Roland Michener to create the Michener Award for Journalism, commissioned by Dr. R.H. Hubbard, chief curator of the National Gallery of Canada. John designed a ceremonial mace for the Royal Society of Canada, commissioned by Her Excellency Mme. Jules Léger, which serves as a medal awarded annually by Heritage Canada. John was also commissioned by Governor General Schreyer to design an award for the Association of Consulting Engineers of Canada. Beyond the accolades, he will be remembered for his love of family, heritage, history, art and nature. Diagnosed with early onset dementia, John lived with the decline of this disease for 16 years. May he now find peace. Friends and family are invited to a Visitation on Thursday, August 1, 2019 at Beechwood, Funeral, Cemetery and Cremation Services (280 Beechwood Ave.) between 11:30 am to 1 p.m., followed by a Memorial Service and light luncheon. In lieu of flowers and in memory of John, the family suggest donations be made to a dementia foundation of your choice.

SEARLE, John V. (LT CMDR, RCN, ret’d) December 3, 1928 - July 24, 2019 Peacefully at Lanark Lodge, Perth ON, age 90. John was born in Ingersoll, ON and raised in Woodstock, ON John joined the Navy in 1952 and traveled the world with various postings to submarines, destroyers and aircraft carriers. John trained as a naval aviator flying fighters, fighter bombers and tracker aircraft. He later trained to fly helicopters and carried out search and rescue missions off the East Coast (HMCS Shearwater). John and his family moved around Canada between Nova Scotia and Saskatchewan. He instructed on Tutor jets in Moose Jaw, SK. His last posting was to St. Hubert Que working at Mobile Command. Flying a desk was not in John’s nature so he left the Navy in 1975 and joined Pratt & Whitney Canada (aircraft engine manufacturer) as a test pilot and later became Chief Executive Pilot. He finally retired from flying for good in 1993 at 65 years of age. John and his wife Dorothy settled on Black Lake by Perth Ont in 1997. Sadly Dorothy passed away in 2008. Predeceased by his sister Grace Funnel and his brother Harold Searle. John is sadly missed by his sister Gwen Harrington of Hamilton and his three children and numerous grand and great-grandchildren. His daughter Linda (Paul) McCarthy and David McCarthy (Erica), Sid, Ben and Sam, Kathryn McCarthy (Greg Noel) Abigail and Heidi, Sheila McCarthy, Brendan McCarthy (Emilie), and Kody Moreau of Ottawa. We wish to acknowledge those who provided wonderful care for Mom in her final years: Dr. John Kiskis who was her loyal doctor for over 40 years, the friendly staff at the Arnprior Villa where Mom resided for the past four years, and the compassionate staff at the Arnprior and District Memorial Hospital who provided Mom with palliative care. Mom most certainly would have approved of her upbeat and positive funeral service at St. Andrew’s United in Pakenham, which was her church for over 72 years. The joyous musical tribute celebrated a life well lived. Pianist barb Armstrong accompanied the impressive local choir in an outstanding performance. Ollie’s grandson Jason Finner delivered a delightful eulogy touching on many meaningful memories. Beth Portt (nee Machan) from “Cashmere and Rose” created a beautiful flower arrangement for the funeral with additional flowers supplied by Marilyn Snedden for the church. C.R. Gamble Funeral Home provided their expertise, going above and beyond to ensure that all the key details were handled with care. Also thanks to Sharleen Duncan and the volunteer staff at St. Andrew’s, who served a delicious luncheon after the service. A very special thank you goes to Reverend Heather Kincaid, whose loving friendship with Mom shone through in her sincere funeral service. her sense of humour, pronounced spirituality, strong faith, and wise words were appreciated by all.
