Taste of the County fundraiser June 4 in Beckwith This year marks the 13th year for the Taste of the County food, beer and wine tasting gala - all proceeds going to our locally run Lanark County Therapeutic Riding Program, which supports 143 differently-abled riders across the county. On Saturday, May 26 at 1 p.m., the public is invited to visit the High Lonesome Nature Reserve for a demonstration of how Mississippi Madawaska Land Trust (MMLT) is scientifically utilizing sound recordings to improve the management of their wilderness properties. Under a one-year pilot project, MMLT, with the support of citizen scientists, has developed and field tested best practices for bioacoustic data collection, analysis and interpretation. Representatives of the

Ontario Trillium Foundation Grant Review team, including Louise Heslop, funders of this pilot project, will be on hand to congratulate the team on this new application of bioacoustic monitoring and present a plaque to mark the work done as a result of receiving a grant from the foundation in July 2017. Mary Vandenhoff, MMLT board director, will explain how bioacoustic monitoring will provide MMLT with a deeper understanding of habitat diversity and changes over

time, including early warning of changes in ecological integrity. Project scientists will be available to explain the process and analysis. Commerce. Squaring off against each other were incumbent Progressive Conservative Randy Hillier, Liberal Amanda PulkerMok, Ramsey Hart of the NDP and the Green party's Anita Payne. Pulker-Mok, appointed to the vacant Mississippi Mills council seat in 2016, announced her candidacy on Dec. 22. The Almonte mother of two boys said that her vision for Ontario includes rural ridings. "We need to see a strong voice when it comes to representing the unique challenges," she said. She indicated the Liberal government would continue to invest in new job creation, health care, innovation for farmers and food manufacturers. Hart, nominated as candidate on April 7, is the current executive director of The Table Community Food Centre in Perth. "One thing is very clear and that's that Ontarians want change. The question is, what kind of change do you want?" Hart said the NDP provides a fully costed platform that looks to provide access to housing, extension of health care to include den-

tal and drug coverage. Payne is no stranger to the Green party, having run provincially in three previous elections and federally in 2015. The Tay Valley Township resident is a retired high school teacher whose focus is addressing the climate crisis. "The Green party wants to do politics differently...we will tell you the truth and fund the programs that Ontarians want and need," she said, noting the platform surrounds jobs, people and plant. Hillier, who lives near Perth, has been MPP of the riding since 2007. One of the former founders of the Lanark Landowners Association, he remains "active in challenging unfair and unjust government laws and policies and I continue to do so and will continue to do so if given the opportunity." He said people expect government to better and improve their lives and with a PC government, the waste and mismanagement by the Liberals will be reversed. Questions were submitted in writing to candidates. They surrounded everything from why

people should personally vote for candidates, their views on an integrated school board, natural gas infrastructure expansion, to high speed Internet, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and health care wait times/bed shortages. A few fireworks were produced when a question asked about ensuring policies, regulations and legislation has been properly evaluated prompted Hart to bring up comments made about him by PC leader Doug Ford. During a leader's debate on May 11, Ford called Hart a professional anti-mining activist due to his work with MiningWatch Canada. "I'm a scientist by trade...Mr. Hillier's leader has a special problem with facts and I've experienced this personally when he called me an environmental extremist..." "You are," interjected Hillier. I've just returned home from interviewing four of the stars of the Studio Theatre's upcoming spring show, Sister Act, the Musical, and I'm still buzzing. Being in the presence of these phenomenal young actors was like sitting next to a Van de Graaff generator: the air was charged, flowing with energy, like liquid joy. Cait Porteous (née Morton), Lindsay Rewi, Brent Maguire and Amber Mitchell are just four of 22 cast members in Sister Act, The Musical. (Visit studiothereatreperth.com for the full list.) Hold parties to their future broken promises It's one thing to see a car commercial give us all the glitz and glamour with none of the hard numbers. The company is softening us up, luring us in with speed and flashy colours. Don't think about the ticket price, payment plan, your pocketbook. It's about the dream, not the reality. That's fine until we walk into the dealership. They have to tell us the price then. Why would anyone sign on the dotted line without knowing it? No, we would demand to know the full cost. Yet many appear willing to walk into the voting booth and sign on without knowing the cost of the next government. At one point in the not-too-distant past, parties put out fully-costed platforms. Last November, former PC leader Patrick Brown unveiled his 78-page 2018 election platform, calling it The People's Guarantee. It included guarantees to cut income tax rates for middle- and low-income earners. Hydro bills would be slashed by 12 per cent. There was something for child care, mental health, an accountability act: you get the picture. The party's new leader, Doug Ford, promised a "solid platform that is fully costed," but had yet to release one nearing the midway point of the June 7 election campaign. It seems the plan now is to make a scattering of announcements, each including a price tag. The Liberal Party back in 2003 bragged about their fully costed platform, saying it was verified by a forensic accountant and two bank economists. Of course, once elected, Premier Dalton McGuinty more than doubled the promised deficit spending and raised taxes (in the form of the Ontario Health Premium.) The Liberals have had a platform ever since. It is the government's budget released prior to every election. They are piling onto it with - among other promises - a pledge to ban auto insurance rates based on driver postal codes; an idea they voted against at Queen's Park. So it seems the choice is between a platform that, based on past actions, would be abandoned once the party wins power; or no platform at all, meaning no promises to break, by a party that wants you to vote in ignorance. The difference between a broken promise and no promise? At least we can hold them to a broken promise. The Ontario NDP has offered platforms, including in 2018, and has not broken a promise in decades, if ever. That may have to do with holding precious little time in power, who knows? We could dream a little too. Maybe that car will go as fast and shine as brightly as in the commercials. Maybe cost doesn't matter. Ready to sign? Not until we've seen the broken promise first.

Kudos to heritage fair participants Dear Editor: I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the well put-together story about the Perth Heritage Fair last week. The information was well presented as well as acknowledging the work of the students, but I would like to provide some further details. In the beginning the students in all the schools in the region ranging from grades 4-8 were given the task of selecting a topic pertinent to some aspect of Canadian History/Heritage. The topic could be on a local, provincial, national or international level. The student had to select the topic, research the information, document this

Each school had their own Heritage Fair where students displayed their projects and were judged by three individuals at three separate times thus the student had to be well prepared to answer questions on their topic. In conclusion a number of students were then selected to go to the Perth Regional Heritage Fair on May 10 at the Perth legion. When they arrived, they discovered that the power was out. Just like good obedient troopers they did not fuss, just reg-

Examining all the projects on display was an eye opening experience. It was very easy to see that these students had worked very hard and each deserved recognition. This region has some extremely talented students and they truly put themselves out there and gave it their all. Their demonstrations were extraordinary and each child took their turn expressing their knowledge concerning their subject matter before three indi-

vidual judges (three sessions of judging). Quite a challenge to say the least and each student stood up to the task. I was extremely proud to see our area students do such an outstanding job and in my opinion each one was a winner. Yes awards were handed out and rightfully so but each students should be very proud of their achievements. These students of today did a top-notch job of reviewing our yesterday. Not only do the students need to be recognized for a job well done but also all the teachers, volunteers, organizers, the Perth Curling Club and the Perth Royal Canadian Legion for hosting. When asked what they will do to curb the costs of electricity for residents and businesses, Payne noted that there needs to be a shift from nuclear generating stations to renewable energy options. "Instead of rebuilding our aging plants, we could import hydro from Quebec. It would be one-third of the cost and they have an excess amount of power," she said. Hart said the NDP's plan is to buy back Hydro One and place it back into the public's hands. "The NDP isn't necessarily going to go forward with the refurbishment of plants, we'd have to evaluate the costs of that," he stated. "There's also a discrepancy in delivery charges to rural customers. That we'll do right away." Pulker-Mok said residents should have seen a 25 per cent decrease in their hydro bills from the Liberals. "The Liberal government has invested $70 billion to have a viable electrical system in Ontario where we don't have rolling blackouts or brownouts anymore." Hillier acknowledged the hydro crisis in the province as a "clustermuck." "There are 250,000 families that can't afford hydro. Last year, 60,000 families were disconnected," he said. "This is a third world problem, not what we would expect in the richest province in the country." "...We have to do better or our kids will be in the dark eating cat food in another generation," Hillier added. Another area of concern for local businesses is Bill 148, the Fair Workplaces, Better Jobs Act, which has had a big impact on employers. Candidates were asked how employers can be expected to absorb these costs and remain competitive. “It was introduced to create fairness across the board,” Pulker-Mok noted. “Part of it was making sure that workers were given equal opportunity. Businesses should be proud when they have employees who are making a living wage and having vacation they have earned. Those employees give more back to the business…invest in your employees and you’ll see the return.” Hillier said that when the act was introduced on Jan. 1 of this year, there were 59,000 fewer jobs in this province by Jan. 31. “Bill 148 has had a direct effect…one in 10 of every jobs in this province is a minimum wage job. Having the highest rate of minimum wage workers is not a record to be proud of,” he said. “We should be a growing and prosperous province, not one where we strive to meet the minimum.” Acknowledging that no one should have to work full-time and be under the poverty level, Payne said “too many people are in part-time jobs working beneath what they’ve been trained for.” “We (Greens) will focus on helping employers provide good jobs that allow people to have a living wage,” she continued, adding this will be done through employer health tax and by reversing corporate tax cuts for big business by one per cent. Hart said the NDP are committed to sticking with the Liberals’ plan for increasing minimum wage to $15 next year. “We believe that people should live with dignity,” he said

When she came for her yearly visit, she turned the whole place upside down. She brought enough clothes to last a year, even though she would only be visiting a week, and she never appeared in the same outfit twice. When she came downstairs for breakfast, she was dressed fit to kill, with every hair in place, and enough makeup on to sink a ship.

We always had a Saturday night party when Aunt Lizzie came. That gave her a chance to visit those she had grown up with, and as Father said, to show off, and put on the dog, and generally to show how well she had done since she left Renfrew County. Well, there she was. Father spent as much time as he could in the barns.

Avoiding Aunt Lizzie as much as possible became his mission for the week. He welcomed the Saturday night house party because that would give him one other night when he didn’t have to sit and hear his sister brag about her money in the bank, the big house, and the new car Uncle Jack bought every year. l See VISIT, page 13

Everything was ready for the party. Neighbours would bring eats, the big white pots were simmering on the back of the Findlay Oval, filled with green tea, and we five children were dressed in our nextto-Sunday best. Then we heard the roar from the upstairs bedroom. Mother, my sister Audrey and I took the stairs two at a time, and Father never took his eyes off the Ottawa Farm Journal. There was Aunt Lizzie, ramrod straight, half dressed, with something around her middle that had more strings and laces than I had ever seen in my life. She was hanging on to the bed post for dear life, and was so red in the face, I thought she was going to explode. I sat on the bed and looked her over from

head to toe. I had never seen one of those contraptions before, and I couldn’t imagine why anyone would put themselves through such torture, if it wasn’t necessary. She was telling Mother to pull the laces tighter. Mother tried, but it still didn’t suit Aunt Lizzie. “Tighter Mabel,” she ordered. “If I pull any tighter, Lizzie, your back will meet your front,” Mother answered. The laces were tied in the front, and big wads of cotton that had been sitting on the wash stand were being stuffed into her bosom. Finally, the ordeal was over. Her white silk dress was slipped over her head, and she looked ten pounds lighter than she did before she got laced up. On the way downstairs I said to Mother I couldn’t

wait to tell the whole family what I had just witnessed in the bedroom ... I was sure it had something to with a sore back. Mother said I wasn’t to mention the corset to anyone ... the secret would just be between us. I said I thought Father would like to know how much pain his sister was having, and maybe it would soften his feelings toward her. Ultra-marathon runners enjoy endurance racing around the globe LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com Isabelle Sauve and Bruno Seguin have a love of running, but unlike most marathon, or short-distance runners, this pair likes to do things to the extreme. They are ultra-marathon runners. An ultra marathon is any distance longer than a marathon, they explained in an email exchange. "Multi stage racing is a different type of ultra marathon, as we carry our own food for the duration of the event (six or seven days)," they wrote. "We are self-sufficient and run with all our mandatory equipment and food supply. Most of multi-stage races are approximately 250 kilometres long, which means we run a marathon every day and there is a day where we run between 80 and 100 kilometres." They came to Lanark County just this winter. Sauve is an OPP officer with the Lanark County Detachment. Seguin came here from Australia, where he was a B2B Managing Director for a leading global education provider. They said they both love

this "fantastic area" and Sauve requested a transfer. Running is the base of their training, but they said they spend a lot of time in the gym working on strength and flexibility. "Endurance requires having a balanced physical and mental condition," they wrote. "As our backpack weighs about 10 kilograms, it is important our upper body and core remains strong during the whole week while running on difficult terrains with temperatures that can reach well over 40 degrees Celsius. We are also usually training twice a day for several consecutive days to be prepared for short recovery time." The pair competed in the Namibia Desert 250 km. Sauve won the women's division. deRosenroll added that Ladd had other administrative experience with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police's administrative division, as well as experience working at the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans. He recalled that Ladd's first interview was over the telephone, while Ladd flew in for his second interview with Fenik,

Gemmell, and McPherson. He called him a "career administrator and that's what we need. "He will do a good job," said deRosenroll. "I'm very excited," added McPherson during the council meeting. In meeting Ladd, McPherson said that "we are very impressed with him."

Deputy Mayor John Gemmell and Coun. Jim Boldt filed their papers to run for mayor on the same day, May 15. "It's going to be an exciting time," said Boldt, after the Tuesday, May 15 town council meeting ended. "Let the games begin." After John Fenik was acclaimed to the mayor's spot in 2010 and 2014, "the voters of this town will finally have a chance to decide," he said. Boldt said he made his decision after consulting with his campaign team. He said he always knew that "there would be a time and a place for me to run." Though born in Renfrew, "I consider Perth my home now," said the 24-year resident. A more fulsome campaign platform will likely come later in the summer, after the provincial election on June 7 at least. "All eyes and ears are on the provincial election (now)," he said. Gemmell said that he decided to run about a week and a half ago, after consulting with his wife Anne. He has served 15 years on council, nine of them as deputy mayor. "Now it's time to take the next step," Gemmell said. "It's a big step." He too said he would also hold off on any campaign promises as it was "too early" in the race, and he wished to see the nomination period come to an end in July, and to get the provincial election "out of the way first." He stressed that he has served the town on numerous committees and boards over the years, including the Great War Memorial Hospital Foundation board. Deputy mayoral race The race for deputy mayor is also heating up, with Coun. Jim Graff, chair of the police services board, squaring off against the councillor who sits beside him, Coun. Stephanie Gray would like a menagerie of pets Last week I mentioned the unfortunate passing of a couple of Girlchild's goldfish. This sparked some conversations about pets in our household. When I was growing up we had a variety of pets. The earliest ones I remember were dogs, but Mom also had tonnes of beautiful fish. I recall tanks full of guppies and watching Mom rushing to separate out babies before their cannibalistic parents ate them. (Life is hard!) My Nan liked parakeets, and we had some, too. We taught them to say their names and words like "pretty pretty bird." There's nothing quite like bright green and blue birds chirping in a sunny kitchen. We tried our hands with hermit crabs for a time.

STEPHANIE GRAY Column They were fascinating, and we learned (the hard way) the trick about holding your palm flat when handling them so they didn't grab onto skin. Ouch. We always had a least one (and no more than two at a time) dogs. When I was wee it was a Pekingese and a Toy poodle, followed by another long-lived Pekingese. My parents didn't graduate to big dogs until I went to university (not enough room for both of us?). Since then, my dad has become wellrecognized for his daily dog walks in town. For the last several years Golden retrievers have been the norm.

We never had cats at home. My parents were staunch dog people. Cats were shooed from the yard because they ate birds and pooped in the garden. Speaking of things outside, as I was growing up I tried to adopt all manner of wildlife, too - turtles, snakes, frogs, fish, baby robins...I probably would have brought home a baby groundhog once, too, if I thought my parents would have gone along with it. (They never let us keep those things for long. Wild creatures are not pets. There are also rules about this. I mentioned this recently as Girlchild tried to convince me she needed a pet baby painted turtle she had found.) Anyway, after hermit crabs came guinea pigs and then rabbits. For a long time, I had quite a love for those soft, quiet, peaceful creatures. In fact, when Groom-boy and I got married, we had a rabbit in the household, and then an-

In fact, our current kitty, Ramsey, is truly my lovely little buddy. In addition to Ramsey, our menagerie includes Myrtle the turtle (28 years and counting) and an assortment of fish, including Pug the remaining goldfish, a couple of tetras and a cory. Girlchild is the Mini Me in the pet parade, I would say. Over the last few years, she has campaigned for a number of different critters, including a ferret, a lizard and, most recently, a dog. And not just any dog, it must be a Corgi. (Because she is like a queen?) For a while, Boychild was hankering for a Golden retriever, but our house is so small I think it would be like keeping a horse inside. Doug Nuttall, senior civil engineer at JP2G Consultants Inc., made a delegation to Perth town council's committee of the whole meeting on Tuesday, May 1, in which he brought councillors up to date on the latest from the peer review of the "Infrastructure Master Plan Area North of 7." "We concluded that there were options for storm water management that had not been considered," he said. But conventional ideas, such as a storm pond, might have required a pump station to move water along, because of the area's topography, and "if you want to pump storm water, you've probably done something wrong," said

Nuttall. "We took a look at another way." Some options were off the table: "Nobody wants a ditch," he said. But one idea was to create "rock fill to take water all the way through your subdivision." In essence, "this is about capturing water. It will move water away on its own," he said. He admitted that an idea like this has not been done on this scale, and is a little bit ambitious. Some of the new homes proposed for the area, which run along this proposed water route, will have to have walkout basements. Nuttall's proposal would cost just under $4 million over 10 years, though he noted that "you don't have to build all of it," at once. The initial, conventional plan would have cost about $10,760,000, which included a $5,715,000 pump station, and $2,946,000 pipe system, at an annual operation cost of about $7,000, costing $6,000 in annual

maintenance, among other costs. This other plan, however, would cost an estimated $3,922,000, of which $2,192,000 would go toward the purchase of stone, and $1,120 would be set aside for a 40 per cent contingency fund. Landscaping would cost $280,000, with an annualized "swale cleanout" costing $4,000. "We believe that area has relatively deep clay soil," said Nuttall. "I'm assuming all of it (water) runs off of the clay," though he would be happy if some of the water was absorbed into the ground. This new proposal "changes the run-off rate ... it actually slows the water down," said Nuttall. Currently, spring run-off heading underneath the bridge on County Road 511 is passing by at a rate of about 50 cubic metres per second. With this new design, the water would sit in a type of pond, and would gradually run off.

One Band You've got to Check Out Last week, I was listening in at the Stewart Park Festival student coffeehouse at the Perth Tea Room where I was introduced to the Stabbing Hares. The six-piece band hails mostly from St. John Catholic High School and their music and performance is pretty incredible. With lead singer Kalil Bailey offering great vocals and a contagious energy, the band offers a solid mix of song offerings. The band also includes Isaac Walker, Chris Bowman, Oliver Matthews-Hannah (he's a PDCI lad), Max Bumstead and Reilly Donnelly. Shirley passed peacefully with her family by her side on Monday May 14th, 2018 at the Great War Memorial Hospital in Perth, ON in her 82nd year. She was the loved wife of the late Morris William Ashby (Sept 2010) and dearly loved Mom of Wayne (Kathie), Cathy (Dan) Trotter and Sharon (Ken) Scanlon. She was the special Nana to Trevor Ashby (Randall Greer), Megan Ashby (Phillip Thomas) Gregory Trotter (Alli Blunt), Hayden Trotter (Megan Pass), Jamie (Jerry) Diaz, and Michael Scanlon and very proud Great Nana to River and Canaan Ashby, and Noah Diaz. Shirley will be missed by her sister, Barbara Renaud, her brother Steve (Edie) Burke, sisters-in-law, Reta Burke, Louise Burke, brothers-in-law Ivan (Shirley Crosbie) Ashby and George Hawley. Shirley will be remembered by her many nieces and nephews, good friends at Carolina Court and good friends and neighbours in the Balderson and Perth areas. ARSENAULT David Brian Suddenly in hospital, Smiths Falls following a brief illness with lung cancer on Saturday, May 12, 2018 at the age of 57. Beloved son of Carrie (Cassell) Arsenault and the late Fred Arsenault. Loved brother of Michael (Laura) of Edmonton and Sheila (Robert) Coutts of Smiths Falls. “Jo” Delphine Barbara Creighton (Jarvis) (nee Clark) passed away Saturday, May 12th, 2018 with her loving daughter by her side at the Rosamond Wing of the Almonte General Hospital. She was born in Smiths Falls on May 16th, 1927. Delphine was predeceased by her husband Willie Creighton of Rosetta/Lanark way, all of her fourteen siblings, also an infant daughter Mae and infant son, and her son Neil Jarvis. Jo will be greatly missed by her four surviving children Ralph (Freda) of Napanee, Keith (Marg) of Perth, Brian (Yvonne) of Athens and Kathy of Carleton Place/Almonte. She will be remembered with love by her seventeen grandchildren, twenty-two great grandchildren and eight great-great grand-children (with three of those already in Heaven to meet her). Jo will be sadly missed by her many nieces, nephews and many dear dear friends too numerous to mention but you know who you are. Irene Boudreau Long Irene Boudreau Long passed away on Jan 5, 2018 at the Palliative Care unit of the Brockville General Hospital. Irene is mourned by her husband, Brady Long, her daughter Colleen Gowan (Chris), grandchildren Keira, Jordan and Adam, her sister Marie Smith (Leo), her brothers Alan (Sandy) and Ronald Boudreau and many nieces and nephews. Irene was a teacher for many years in Montreal, Ottawa and Alberta and ended her career as Principal of the School of Hope, a home schooling program in rural Alberta with over three thousand students enrolled at one point. She leaves behind many friends and colleagues across the country. Gordon was predeceased by his first wife Arlie (McParland) Scott in 1979 and his second wife Joyce (McIntyre-Jordan) in 1995. He was the cherished father of Ann (Jim) Martin of Osgoode, Elaine (Pete Noonan) Barber of Perth and Sandra (Mario) Caya of Perth and adored grandfather of Amanda (Samnang), Stephanie (Andrew), Kate (Chris), André and Nathalie and great grandson Atticus. Gordon was the stepfather of Janice Kerr and Michael Jordan (Joyce’s children); Karen Laur, Janet Huston, Dan Hogan (Norma’ s children) many step grand and great grandchildren and niece’s and nephews. Gordon was predeceased by parents Thomas Bell Scott and Charlotte (Simpson) Scott and siblings Bruce, Isabelle, Raymond, Irene, Dorothy, Myrtle and Douglas. Born in Lyczanka, Poland in 1924, Wally spent a several years in a European army as a truck driver. It was there that he met the love of his life. They married in Kiel, Germany in 1948. Wally came to Canada in the 1950’s to work for Gillies Bros. Lumber Mill in Braeside for a number of years, then moved onto the Kenwood Mills (also known as Hyuck Canada, and Weavexx) from where he retired. He enjoyed a good card game with friends, gardening, and time spent with his grandchildren.
