Angelique Francis may not be a name that you know yet, but once you hear her, you won't be able to forget it! This talented young woman has had many highs in her musical career and still has a lifetime of them to come. Starting her career at age seven, she made her television debut at 13, when she wrote and composed an original song for the Gayle King Show on the Oprah Network. She has toured the world and has become well known for her multi-talented, multiinstrumental playing, singing, songwriting and composing. She is known for her eclectic mix of musical genres including blues, soul, folk, jazz and rock.

Francis has toured all over and this summer is no exception. The Station Theatre in Smiths Falls is pleased to have her fit us in to her very busy summer schedule. In between stops at the Ottawa Jazz Festival and Bluesfest, which will have much larger audiences, we are thrilled to have her here in our intimate 140-seat theatre. Not only is this talented musician known as one of Canada's top emerging blues artists, she is also recognized for her volunteer work with various charities and youth mentorship programs. Over the past few years, Francis has received the following recognition for her volunteer efforts: An Ontario Leading Women Building Com-

munities Award (this award honours women who have made a significant difference in their communities in the province of Ontario), a Global Alliance Community Builder Award (for giving back to the community through music), and an Art Child Award (youth making a difference through art). Francis is at the Station Theatre on Friday, June 29 at 8 p.m. Tickets for the show are $30, all in, and can be purchased with cash at Special Greetings, 8 Russell St. E., or with a credit card online at www.smithsfallstheatre.com or by phone at 613-2830300. – submitted by The Smiths Falls Community Theatre

On Saturday, June 23, the Mississippi Madawaska Land Trust (MMLT) invites you to Discover Dragonflies and Butterflies at the High Lonesome Nature Reserve. This outing is being led by local ecologist and nature enthusiast Ken Allison, who has been studying these insects for more than 30 years, after being introduced to them by his children. There are more than 120 species of dragonflies (including damselflies) and more than 100 species of butterflies in eastern Ontario, and by late June, adults of many species of these insects should be flying at the Nature Reserve. With many beaver ponds, marshes and swamps at High Lonesome, we can expect to see many beautiful and interesting dragonflies

and damselflies that breed in these still waters. The wide range of habitats at High Lonesome also ensures that there are many types of plants present, providing opportunities for a wide range of butterfly species. Be ready to be surprised by the beauty of these small creatures as you spend a couple of hours wandering the trails of this gem of a nature reserve, observing the dragonflies, damselflies and butterflies along the way. Take binoculars, waterproof footwear and an insect net, if you have one. Registration starts at 10 a.m., and we'll head out by 10:30 a.m. Admission is by a $10 donation. This event is sponsored by Gilligallou Bird Inc., eastern Ontario's backyard birding specialty

store. Visit gillagallou.com for more. High Lonesome Nature Reserve is one of eight properties and more than 2,700 acres of ecological significant land in eastern Ontario now protected in perpetuity by MMLT. It is located at 867 Carbine Rd., outside Pakenham. Take County Road 29 to Pakenham Village, turn on Waba Road, and continue west for 2.9 kilometres. Turn left on Barr Side Road and travel for 1.6 km. Take the first left at Carbine Road and drive 4 km, to 867 Carbine Road. Please visit mmlt.ca/ event/discover-dragonflies-butterflies for more details and for a map to the property. – submitted by the Mississippi Madawaska Land Trust

It was June 8, 1948 when the charter was signed for the formation of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 475 Toledo. This was the result of the vision and dedication of 19 area veterans from the First and Second World Wars. They were: Stewart Hamilton, Charles Gray, Kenneth Johnston, Gerald "Joe" Lawson, O. Gardiner, L. Cahill, Ernest Allen, Eldon Mackie, Ronald Mott, Garnet Struthers, Earl Phillips, Gordon Johnston, James "Jim" Bell, M. Thornhill, Wilfred Letourneau, W.E. Bell, L. de Wolfe, Clifford Gray and B. Seeley. Fast forward to Saturday, June 9 when the Toledo legion hosted an open house to acknowledge 70 years in existence. There were exhibits recognizing the history of the branch, some sports demonstrations, hamburgers, hotdogs, cake and lots of visiting. The highlight of the afternoon was honouring 70 years of continuous legion membership of charter member, Eldon Mackie. Eldon is the last survivor of the original 19 members. Unfortunately, due to illness, Eldon could not attend but his son Grant was happy to accept his awards. Eldon was awarded a 70year legion membership lapel pin as well as a certificate of merit. The pin and certificate were presented by legion Zone G2 com-

the Thoms' boys, and Audrey had planned on having her friend Iva over. I was delighted. I got to sit in the front seat, jammed between Mother and Father, and the three boys and Audrey were packed like sardines in the back. They had to take turns sitting on the floor, which my sister had no intention of doing, since she had worn her best white dress to church, and the remains of the last sheep haul were still there. We had barely passed our lane on the way to Douglas when the trouble started. Earl, the youngest had been on the floor since we left church, and he decided he had had enough of the sheep dung, and it was time someone else changed places. When no one offered to change, Earl either bit Emerson on the leg, or jabbed him with his penknife, but the roars could be heard in Douglas still a few miles away. Emerson said he was going to bleed to death, Audrey said he didn't even have a scratch, and Everett asked Father to stop the car, because he wanted to walk back to the farm and get away from all the fighting. All this time Father never said a word, which was his usual way of dealing with a family fight. I could see him starting to chew on his pipe. Without a word coming out of his mouth, he wheeled the old car into someone's lane, pulled a U-

We were barely stopped when the four in the back seat fell out of the car, Audrey crying that her dress was ruined, Emerson limping and saying he was pretty sure he might lose his leg, Earl heading for the pump where he put his head under the spout and let the cold well water pour over his entire body, and Everett heading for the Bonnechere River. I followed Mother into the house, and Father stayed seated in the front seat of the Model T chewing on his pipe, looking straight ahead like he was in a trance. I was pretty sure it would be a long time before we again went for a Sunday drive after church. – Interested in an electronic version of Mary's books? ABOUT US

Caution: roadwork ahead Construction season is upon us and with that comes an increased need for motorists to pay attention and adjust their driving accordingly. The price for not doing so can be devastating. It was just two years ago in April 2016 when Daniel William Milton, 42, was hit and killed by a vehicle while working at a highway construction project on Highway 17 west of Campbell Drive in Arnprior. Another worker was seriously injured and airlifted to hospital. In the fall of that year, a 70-year-old man was charged with careless driving. This fall, an inquest will be held in Renfrew to examine the events surrounding Milton's death. The jury may then make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths. And with the many road construction projects underway in the Ottawa Valley and beyond, OPP are reminding motorists of the importance of construction zone safety and reducing speed when entering construction zones. The County of Lanark recently unveiled its summer construction plans, which include $7.75 million in work, including complete pavement preservation on 57.3 kilometres with rehabilitation and paved shoulders on 29.7 kilometres, including portions of Roger Stevens Drive in Montague, Appleton Side Road, Wolf Grove Road in Almonte, as well as major work on the Ashton Bridge, near Carleton Place. Traffic will be reduced to one lane for many of the projects. OPP say drivers are advised to proceed with caution when approaching a construction zone and to obey all warning signs, people and/or devices that are directing traffic through the area. It is an offence under the Highway Traffic Act to disobey STOP or SLOW signs displayed by a traffic-control person. Lower speeds are often posted in construction zones to increase worker safety and to reflect increased road hazards such as construction vehicles, uneven or gravel surfaces and narrowed lanes, say OPP. Motorists are reminded that speeding fines are doubled in construction zones when workers are present. There are ways to be as prepared as possible for what you might encounter on the roads. Information on roads and construction projects in Ontario can be accessed through the Ministry of Transportation's Traveller Information Services, which provides road information for provincial highways in Ontario, by calling 511 or by visiting the MTO Ontario 511 website at www.ontario.ca/511. Let's respect workers by making the choice to drive safely this summer.

Resident says mayoral candidates need to 'walk the walk' DEAR EDITOR: Statements by the two candidates for Carleton Place mayor (Louis Antonakos and Jerry Flynn) are quite interesting but hardly credible and somewhat lacking. Both candidates purport "highest level of integrity and honesty" and "keeping tax increases to a minimum" in supporting our community. However, what is said and the actions they take tell a different story. In February 2018 both candidates as members of council voted in favour of the proposed Bodnar lands subdivision just above the

Despite advice from the urban forest river corridor committee and local residents to not approve the plan for this development they voted in favour. The conditions attached to the development of this subdivision are not adequate given the potential impact of the contaminated storm water on the Mississippi River and the safety and security of our drinking water. If you are patient enough to tap into it, we want nothing more than to show our affection. us, then please meet us at LAWS. Fabio Hi, I am Fabio and I am two years old. I look a bit funny as they shaved my lovely fur because it was severely matted and dirty when I arrived at LAWS. I am a bit of everything you'd expect from a cat. Although I enjoy a bit of quiet time, I am no couch potato either. My toys are packed and I'm ready for adventure when you're ready to play.

I like affection, but I am comfortable to entertain myself until you're ready for me to warm your lap. I guess I am just a little bit of all good things wrapped up in a steady funny body and as a bonus I come with extra toes. I like other cats too! I suppose you could say I am pretty much 'purr'fect. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the shelter at shelter@lanarkanimals.ca or by calling 613-283-9308.

Jeff Maguire writes about the Ontario election The contentious Ontario election campaign is now behind us and if you are like me you're probably glad it is. By the time June 7 rolled around I was thoroughly sick of the negative election advertising and I just wanted to see the end of the process. And this was a relatively short campaign! Doug Ford and the Ontario Progressive Conservative Party rode a towering wave of voter discontent to a convincing majority win something that surprised many people. Especially those who paid close attention to some of the election polls which are now a daily part of any and every election in Canada.

JEFF MAGUIRE Column I've never been a fan of election polls because I feel they can unduly influence uneducated voters and help swing the vote one way or another. There are a lot of people out there who vote without the benefit of much, if any, information about individual candidates or the platforms of the parties they represent. I think you should know something about the individual and the party you intend to vote for.

Please keep our community clean!

My concern is that certain polls appear to be released with no qualification. For example, what was the methodology used to compile the poll information? What was the sample size? Are certain polls done independently or are they party driven? To me those factors make a huge difference in terms of whether a particular poll can be considered legitimate. In fact what this pre-election hype did was reinforce my strong feeling that the only poll that really matters is the official one on election day. – Jeff Maguire is a career journalist who lives in Carleton Place, Ont. He has been writing for community and daily newspapers in Ontario since 1971. He can be reached by email at: jeffrey.maguire@rogers.com

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

A Sommelier's Journey DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@metroland.com Hey brother, pour the wine! And on June 6, that brother was none other than Brian Preston, wine sommelier, who welcomed the Probus Club to summer with a speech at the Timber Run Golf Course in Lanark Highlands Township. But though he has given the subject of wine tasting and pairing a lot of serious thought and study, he stressed that it's not that difficult to do the work yourself: "You know what you like when you eat it or drink it," he said. "You are your own sommelier." The Portland resident is a graduate of Algonquin College's sommelier program, having begun seriously pursuing his passion in 1995. He has visited some of the best-known wine producing regions of Canada (B.C.'s Okanagan Valley, and Ontario's Prince Edward County and Niagara Region), as well as other well known places like Napa Valley, California, to even Japan, to witness sake (rice wine) being produced. When not mixing and matching foods and drinks, he is a member of the Portland branch of the Royal Canadian Legion and sits on the board of the Country Roads Community Health Centre. While stressing that, with practice, and using good taste (in both senses of the word), and smell, he did offer some direction

to his guests, such as never pairing a "big red" wine with something like shrimp. "It'll blow away," the taste of the shrimp, he said. There are different acidity levels in different wines, as there are different levels in foods. So, for example, it would be good to pair a goat cheese with, say, a New Zealand sauvignon blanc. "Match wines with your foods," he said. "If the food is light, have a nice, light wine. Think of the foods in terms of their components," with lamb, roasts, and stews, going well with red wines, for example. And if you're looking to refresh the palette? "Sparking white wine will do the trick," he said. There are differences in where a wine is grown - and even who is smelling, drinking, or tasting the wine. "Women ... are better at discerning aromas than men," said Preston. And there is a difference in New World and Old World wines, the latter of which has been "making wines for eons. The wines of the New World are more fruity up front." France is famous for its wines, and for the maturity of their wooden oak wine barrels, which can now go for as much as $1,400 each. "Oak imparts different flavours," he said, though he noted that it red wine is more often put into a barrel than white wine. Even within our own prov-

Wine sommelier Brian Preston closely examines a wine glass during his speech to the Probus Club at the Timber Run golf course in Lanark Highlands Township on Wednesday, June 6. ince, there are differences in how wine is made. Vines are buried over the winter period in Prince Edward County, but on the Niagara Peninsula, they remain out all year long. A Prince Edward County wine may be more expensive than one made a stone's throw from Niagara-on-theLake, but that is because "you're paying for all the extra labour." As for serving wine at just the right temperature, he advises that wines just taken out of the freezer are "just too cold," and that they should be served "cool, but not cold, cold. It will taste better if you lightly chill it." Another new area in the world of wine is blended wine.

"Blends give you two or more grape varieties in a wine," he said. "They are doing it with white wines more than they used to." The colour of a wine comes from the skin of the grape. Before you head off to the liquor store, you may wonder what to buy. "Look at the annual wine championships," Preston advised. A quick look on the Internet can bring you a list of the most recent gold, silver, and bronze medal winners from, say, the All-Canadian Wine Championships (this year's championships were held from June 14-16, in Cherry Valley, Ont.)

Building permit fees set to change to standard rate for different categories DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@metroland.com A new flat rate, based on proposed square footage for developments, is being proposed for town building permit fees. "This is somewhat of a change from the way we approach building permit fees," said development and protective services director Forbes Symon, during a presentation to Perth town council's committee of the whole meeting on Tuesday, June 5. He said that this new approach was similar to that of other communities, and admitted that while these new rates were, on average, higher than those charged in Smiths Falls, they were lower than those charged in Mississippi Mills, and lower than those in Ottawa. "We need to cover our costs," he said, though the changes were "not going to result in a significant bottom-line change. Some we will win on, some we will

lose on." However, he stressed that the new rates "will treat all developers the same," which Mayor John Fenik agreed with, that the new method was an "equitable application." "I like this approach," said Coun. Judy Brown, who also represents town council on the boards of the Downtown Heritage Perth Business Improvement Area (BIA) and Perth and District Chamber of Commerce. She called it "more fact-based than asking someone what they think the value (of a proposed project) is." The matter will come back to the August committee of the whole meeting, complete with a staff report.

By the numbers Some examples of the different construction project types, and how they would likely be charged: • Civic performing arts, galleries, museums: Valued at $250 per square foot,

Lyme disease support group aims to begin in Perth in July DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@metroland.com A new support group for Lanark County Lyme-disease victims and carers will begin meeting in

July. "I share your concerns, frustrations, questions," said organizer Julie Cable, speaking during the Lanark Fights Lyme meeting in the library of St. John Catholic High School in Perth on

Tuesday, June 12. "There was no support group, unless I wanted to travel to Kingston or Ottawa ... That's what I'm hoping we can do here. We don't have to travel." The proposed dates for the first meeting would be July 11 or

12, at 6 p.m., though no venue has been chosen yet. They may meet at St. John high school, but as that venue is not available over the summer months, Cable is considering locations such as the Perth library or area churches. She was afflicted by Lyme disease about two years ago, and "I became so debilitated ... I could hardly even work," she recalled. "My testing (for Lyme) was negative here in Canada," but she got back positive results from the United States. "My doctor here in Perth still says, to this day, that it's not Lyme." Over the past two years, "I clawed my way through the system," while also joining online forums and support groups. "I became Dr. Google ... What got me through were the people I leaned on online."

Cable stressed that "there is no right treatment plan," for everyone, no one-size-fits-all plan, but getting help as soon as possible is critical because, if left untreated, Lyme disease can spread. "(You need to) know what treatment you need right away." She admitted that she is not a doctor and is "by no means a Lyme expert," she said. "But I am a survivor. I keep positive." The support group does not receive any funding, and she commended Foodsmiths for offering to donate food and water. The "next steps," she would like to see would be to be "creating a charitable foundation," she said. For more information, please call Lanark Fights Lyme, at 613264-8677, or check out the group's Facebook page online.

Lame duck council? DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@metroland.com

“There’s something special about hockey that brings communities together.” Bill, Restaurant Owner from Ottawa, ON With over 20 years of experience in sports management, Bill was looking for a new challenge and a new way to give back to his community. When a friend suggested he look into purchasing a Tim Hortons Restaurant, things fell perfectly into place. Tim Hortons’ presence in youth hockey immediately gave him the chance to get involved in sports again, but this time in his local community. Now, whether he and his staff are volunteering at Timbits Hockey Jamborees or supporting Junior A games, there’s no event, or player, too small that isn’t deserving of a helping hand.

Thank you, Bill. And thanks to all those who make our community stronger.

With four councillors battling it out for higher officer - and a fifth councillor still undecided Perth town council appears headed for a "lame duck" session later this year. Deputy Mayor John Gemmell and Coun. Jim Boldt filed paperwork on the same day, May 15, to run for mayor, while Coun. Riq Turner is reportedly mulling a run for the top job on council, too. Coun. Jim Graff will be running against Coun. Ed McPherson, meaning that, if all five men run, three of them will not be returning to town council once the new council takes office in December. (Coun. Judy Brown has also filed to run for re-election.) All that is required to invoke the "lame duck" status is that less than 75 per cent of councillors will be returning to office. "With these numbers, would this be a lame duck council?" asked Brown. "Yes," replied town hall's clerk, Lauren Walton, during Perth town council's committee of the whole meeting on Tuesday,

June 5. The nomination period ends on July 27. A lame duck period could last from July 27 to Dec. 1, and would allow the new, incoming chief administrative officer, Ron Ladd, to take over certain duties of council, such as, according to a report submitted by current chief administrative officer John deRosenroll: the hiring or dismissal of any employee by the municipality; the disposition of any real or personal property of the municipality which has a value exceeding $50,000 at the time of disposal; and, making any expenditures or incurring any other liability which exceeds $50,000. The bylaw, which was passed unanimously by council, would only come into force when the clerk determines that "with certainty that less than 75 per cent of the current members of council will returning to sit on the new council after Nomination Day," wrote deRosenroll. "A wise chief administrative officer would not use these powers unless absolutely necessary," said deRosenroll, who will be leaving his post at the end of June. The close of nominations used to take place in the fall, meaning that there would be a longerthan-normal lame duck period in 2018. There would actually be two periods within the lame duck period, the first lasting from July 27, nomination day, to Oct. 22, election day, and the second running from election day to Nov. 30.

Tay Valley man claims stevia cure for Lyme disease after self tests DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@metroland.com Could a simple sugar replacement found at your local supermarket hold a cure for Lyme disease? Tay Valley Township resident Eric Scheuneman hopes so, claiming that stevia has cured him of his disease. The three types of stevia he used, he claims, all worked better to varying degrees. Better than the antibiotics he had been prescribed, especially when dealing with his stage three Lyme disease pain. Sitting in the dining room of his farmhouse (built in 1834) east of Maberly May 23, he recalled that he "most likely" was bitten by a tick found on his rural property. A friend found a tick on his

neck on May 17, 2017, which was seen and properly and successfully removed by a friend. "I've only ever found one tick on my body, actually," he said. "It was engorged." After the tick was removed, "you could just see the bite," he said. "There was no rash at all. I had to look to see it." (He bought his farmhouse in 1979, and continued renovations until he was finally able to move into it in 1984. Not surprisingly, he knows a thing or two about fixing up homes. He wrote his first book, Insulating Homes for Energy Conservation, as he did energy conservation work for the federal government.) The next day, May 18, his family doctor started him on a prescription of 200 mg of Doxycyline for 21 days. Three days later, a test

came back negative for Lyme disease, and he had no symptoms. (He does, however, suffer from chronic fatigue syndrome.) He later developed symptoms starting on Aug. 18, 2017, which he described as a "body flu." "This was the beginning of 34 days of untreated, severe, debilitating symptoms," he wrote in an online chronology. The body flu was replaced with about "three severe vertical shafts of pain across the abdomen, starting on Aug. 22. Meeting with his family doctor on Sept. 15: "I pleaded and finally convinced (my doctor) to order a Lyme disease blood test." The test came back positive on Sept. 21. The pain continued, affecting his sleep. By Oct. 3, his doctor upped his Doxycyline dosage to

400 mg, twice the Canadian recommended dosage, which Scheuneman said is in keeping with a German protocol for dealing with Lyme disease. After 10 days of this increased dosage, "all of these stage two pains were gone." But, by the end of the 20 days of the 400 mg of Doxycyline, he was already on to stage three of the disease. "It spread. I could feel it," he said of the third stage. "All around my torso, front and back." He went to the local hospital, and "the young emergency (room) doctor was impressed with my research and daily logs, documenting my treatment and symptoms. "He was sympathetic to my situation and concerned and apologized three times for not being able to prescribe another antibiotic as suggested by the German guidelines," Scheuneman wrote. That ER doctor did prescribe another Lyme test, which, on Nov. 7, came back positive again. Two doctors. Two tests. Two positives for Lyme. And still no closer to help. "I was on my own and very concerned and decided I must take action," he wrote. Back in his dining room, he was equally contemplative. "That's when I had to fend for myself," he said. "I was quite terrified at that point. It can spread to your heart, your brain. I was quasi-terrified but I had to keep my wits about me."

Experimentation begins Scheuneman has a chemical background, having done graduate work at the University of Calgary in theoretical and analytical organic chemistry, and worked for the federal government as an organic chemist. But it was his ex-spouse who pointed him toward an online article on the use of stevia as a possible way to treat Lyme. "I had no idea," said Scheuneman, who joked that it was always a good idea to keep on good terms with one's ex-spouse. "I was forced to research and work on my own to develop the treatments." Stevia leaf extracts are used as a food additive, usually as a substitute for sugar in tea and coffee, for example. He began his self-experiments on Nov. 17, using three stevia products bought at local stores. (The exact product names, dosages, et cetera, are available on his website, eric-lyme.ca.) The stevia additives were "generally taken without food, and doses taken about six hours apart, such as 8 a.m., 2 p.m., and 8 p.m. Probiotics were stopped while taking all additives and prescriptions to ensure that probiotics would not 'use up' the antibiotic action," he wrote. By Dec. 3, he wrote that he "woke up with barely a trace of soreness and no pain." He continued his experiments, l See LOCAL, page 7

though, as his condition improved. By New Year's Eve, he wrote that he was "essentially (at) full level energy with barely noticeable soreness. ... Lyme disease appears to be cured for now." The regimen continued on into 2018, so that by Valentine's Day, he wrote that after 14 days of using the last of the three tested products, the symptoms appear to have ended. "I've got no qualms to recommend this," he said. "It cross-confirms so closely what happens in the lab." He was quick to point out that "I'm careful not to blame individual doctors," most of whom were sympathetic to his plight, and did what they could. "I blame the establishment." Having told his family doctor about his release from the grip of pain, he reports that the doctor is "happy for me." Future prognosis

He had originally been invited to attend the International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society conference in Chicago this coming November, but that invitation has since been cancelled because of concerns that Scheuneman was the only test subject, who was also administering the tests on himself. Professor Eva Sapi, who teaches biology as the chair of the Department of Biology and Environmental Sciences at the University of New Haven, in Connecticut, wrote to Scheuneman on May 11, and said in an email that: "I am extremely happy that you are feeling better. ... There are a lot of Lyme sufferers trying stevia as we speak." She said she was confident that his positive reports would mirror those of others and that neither his stories nor those of others using stevia "will not be dismissed. Please report back this summer how you are doing."

(An article in the New Haven Register newspaper reported on July 1, 2017 that Sapi and her students were already researching this possibility through the university's Lyme Disease Research Group, in a research paper published in the European Journal of Microbiology and Immunology. However, the newspaper did add that the results must still be "borne out by clinical trials." The paper also pointed out that the research done by Sapi and her students found that it was "liquid, whole-leaf extract - not the powdered varieties that people most commonly use - reduced the biofilm mass by around 40 per cent," with the biofilm mass being the bacteria that causes Lyme disease. Scheuneman wrote back to Sapi the same day, saying that "I understand the professional and scientific difficulties in transferring laboratory results to the human body - and the

reluctance to accept oneperson results." But he did refer to two well-known scientific cases where there were one-person test subjects. One was Edward Jenner, who developed the world's first successful vaccine, and Dr. Barry Marshall, who "self-tested in 1984 by infecting himself with H. pylori bacteria and then treating himself with antibiotic - to prove the cause and cure for gastric and peptic ulcers." Marshall's results were published in the Medical Journal of Australia in 1985. Marshall would later win the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 2005. Scheuneman did concede that "there can be other co-infections that may not be eliminated by my stevia protocol." But what is most important for him, right now, is how he feels. "It (the pain) has not come back," he said. "This

is so clear. So safe. So amazing. ... I'm just happy it works so well."

Health Unit advice Joan Mays, manager of community health protection, with the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit, said that there is "definitely an increase in the number of ticks" in the area. Before this year, ticks were mainly found in the St. Lawrence River area, but "it has moved north," said Mays during a telephone interview on the morning of Monday, May 28. As such, "reports of Lyme disease have increased." She did caution, however, that doctors and potential patients are now more aware of the possibility of Lyme disease being carried through ticks due to better reporting. "We do not send ticks in to be tested any more," Mays said. "Don't bring that tick into the hospital, that doesn't matter."

This is mainly because it could take as much as three months to have the tick analyzed for the bacteria that causes Lyme disease, and treatment would need to start well before that time. "Greater than 20 per cent of the ticks do carry the bacteria," said Mays. She urged people to be cautious while outside - to wear long pants, tucked into one's footgear, and to do a tick check upon returning home. Having a quick shower, and quickly washing the clothes you wore outside, and drying them afterwards, can also be effective. "(There are) benefits of being out in nature," she said. "We don't want people to be afraid of nature." She noted that ticks do not normally bite a person right away, like mosquitoes. They can take their time looking for a moist, warm area on your body to feast on blood. "Quick removal is key," said Mays.

Cathy James writes about mail, summer holidays and a new pair of shoes When Trent Peden was heading from his office to send mail out with Canada Post and deposit cheques at the bank, he got things a little mixed up. For some reason, he accidentally dropped his cheques' envelope - which were to be deposited in the bank - into the red Canada Post box across from town hall along with his other envelopes (both were contained in standard

CATHY JAMES Column size 10 envelopes). Nearing the end of the day, some three hours later, still with no call from Canada Post, Trent came across his home postman, Dale Bowes. Trent disclosed his error to Dale, and asked him what he might do. Without hesitation, Dale pulled out his cell and made some calls to

the local guys. Ten minutes later, Dale and Trent arrived at the main distribution building near the arena, where another postal worker met them with the following update: "I've narrowed it down to these two boxes." Dale moved five or six pieces of mail and there was Trent's envelope with the cheques in it. How's that for smalltown life whereby you're connected in a way that gets your cheques back in your hand within a short window of time?

Ready for the summer? School's almost out. Oh, gone will be the days of your early-morning ponderings over lukewarm

coffee, when you'll ask yourself: what, in the name of bologna, will you put into your child's lunch bag that day? Instead, you're met with the ongoing conundrum: where will my children go today? When it comes to balancing out work and summer holidays, I'm quickly learning that it takes organization, camp sign-ups, peer support and shortened work days to magically make it work. While that's to come your way for the next eight weeks, here's a good way to celebrate the end of the school year. On Thursday, June 28 (yes, that's a PA Day), Perth Outfitters will open up its entire grounds

and fleet to the public. It's an entry by donation in which proceeds will go to the local Canadian Cancer Society. You can use their kayaks, canoes, standup paddleboards, minigolf course and more - all with your donation. They're running the End of School Year Party from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and it's open for kids of all ages - parents - you've got to be there, too! It's a great way to launch into summer holiday mode without much planning on your part.

Adopting the Birkenstock lifestyle After a year of ignoring my physiotherapist's advice (sorry, Cath), I finally did it. I bought a pair of Bir-

kenstocks. After trying on multiple pairs at Foodsmiths (great service, by the way), I went with a pair that fit and worked. While in line, a woman behind me leans toward me and declared: once you go to Birkenstocks, you can never go back to anything else. Really? Is she right? While I know I'll never return to stunning high heels, am I subjected to the comforts of the Birkenstock lifestyle? Tell me: have you converted to the Birkenstock lifestyle? Or, is there another pair of shoes that you can never return from? – Do you have a Private I story idea for Cathy? Send her a note at cathy@catscovecommunications.com.

Double double toil and trouble

Stephanie Gray writes is waxing poetically ... sort of With a kid in high school, invariably there comes a time when Shakespeare comes into play. Get it? Comes into "play"? I slay me. Ahem. Anyway. In the newspaper in the town where we live, I should probably write about how much the kid has totally embraced the works of William Shakespeare and is now a huge fan. But let's be real.

STEPHANIE GRAY Column Shakespeare is a hard sell, even when I was in high school a kabillion years ago. That didn't stop me from liking it. I even went on to take Shakespeare courses in university, but I've always been a word geek. The complaints I hear usually come down to rele-

vance. "Why do we have to do this?" people moan. "This is so pointless. Nobody talks that way anymore." And this is when I start to get all animated and geeky and excited, especially if any of the kid's friends are around and I have the potential to be embarrassing (parenting!). So, I start babbling. One of the amazeball things about Shakespeare is the fact nobody really talked like that back then, either. Can you imagine how difficult it would have been for the average person in the late 1500s to go around speaking in iambic pentameter? Do you even know what iambic pentameter is? Besides being fun to say, it involves a lot of math. Schmoop.com defines iambic pentameter nicely. "An iamb is metrical foot that consists of an un-

stressed syllable followed by a stressed one - daDUM. Penta means five. Meter refers to a regular rhythmic pattern in poetry. So iambic pentameter is a kind of rhythmic pattern that consists of five iambs per line, almost like five heartbeats: daDUM daDUM daDUM daDUM daDUM." The example they give is from Twelfth Night: "If MUsic BE the FOOD of LOVE, play ON." We tend to get all hung up on Shakespeare as being fancy talk, but part of his appeal was that he played to the masses, so they had to be able to follow along. His plays were entertainment (remember: there was no radio, TV or interwebs back then). And that, ladies and gentlemen, was one of the biggest lessons I learned about studying Shakespeare. Yes, he was a poet,

but if you're studying a play, watch the darned thing! It is meant to be seen! And Shakespeare's stuff makes a lot more sense when you see it and hear it together. Shakespeare influenced modern English more than you might think. Back in his day, rules for grammar, spelling and pronunciation were much less standardized and he helped to formalize things. Hundreds of expressions he wrote back then we still use today, such as "with bated breath," "a foregone conclusion," "eat me out of house and home," "dead as a doornail" ... I could go on and on. In fact, I almost always say "double double toil and trouble, fire burn and cauldron bubble" as I stir fudge on the stove. Then I giggle (geek). And here's the big thing. Language evolves. Art

evolves. It all comes from somewhere. What Shakespeare was doing 400 years ago reminds me a bit of rap today. It is poetry and there are twists on the language and deep messages and takes on society. You sometimes have to listen hard to get it. I imagine students in English classes 200 years from now looking at Kendrick Lamar and Childish Gambino and Eminem and so many others and saying, "Why do we have to do this?" and "This is so pointless. Nobody talks that way anymore." Hopefully someone will rush geekily into the room and make it real. – Stephanie Gray is a word girl, project manager and college teacher who makes up words, has petulant body parts and obsesses about her patio. sjgray@bell.net.

Death be not proud It always amazes me how death and dying is such a defining topic of conversation, writes Rev. Shirley Abrahamse There are those who shut down and walk away as they do not want to participate in the conversation surrounding death and dying, yet there are always

those who debate and cause the conversation to take much depth. At a recent meeting I was at, the conversation was flushed through the eyes of those doing funerals. There were so many variables that no one was quite satisfied with the answers, but one thought rang out true. Jesus wept. This simple statement voiced in John 11 verse 35. His friend Lazarus had died. He had arrived too late. Lazarus had been dead for four days. We know that in this story Jesus calls

You may say, 'This is summer why are we talking about death?' Death does not wait on seasons or time schedules. Why did Jesus delay his arrival at Bethany, the sisters of Lazarus had sent word

that Lazarus was very ill. Why did Jesus cry when he knew he could raise Lazarus from the dead? Death often leaves us with many questions, many that will not be answered this side of the grave. What stands out for me in this story is that Jesus cried tears of grief for a friend. As I have had friends pass away, so you will have had as well, that grief can take various form. There is great sadness because those who have passed were young and vibrant. Some, rejoicing as those who have passed lived a long life and the end of life had become very difficult and knowing they are headed to heaven we rejoice in their released from this earth to continue eternal life. The poem Death be not proud, by John Donne ends with these words: "One short sleep past, we wake eternally, And death shall be no more; death, thou shalt die." – Rev. Mayor gives more muted help to 'Paint the Summer' event

5. The event has been going on, at various locations across Ontario, since 1983, raising money for local initiatives. "Every nickel goes to charity," said James. The last Docs on Ice event saw more than $100,000 raised for the Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto. Hospice Muskoka in Bracebridge was the recipient of the 2017 tournament's fundraising efforts, while the 2019 event will raise money for the Lanark County Therapeutic Riding program as well as the Perth Enrichment Program for Older Adults. James said that holding the event in Perth and other Lanark County towns comes at an opportune time in late winter, "a time when we see very few tourists," he said. This will bring "a thousand doctors coming in," he said. But in order to make sure that the maximum amount is going to charity, the organization asked that

Renegade Bass Tour comes to Rideau Ferry LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com The Renegade Bass Tour will open its tournament series next weekend in Rideau Ferry as 77 teams descend on the Big Rideau for a 7 a.m. shotgun start on Saturday, June 23. Anglers will blast off from the marina in hopes to bag the five heaviest small- or largemouth bass before the 4 p.m. shutdown. That's almost twice as many teams as last year, says Matt Massey of Carleton Place, who not only fishes in the tournament with partner Travis Raison, but will be broadcasting it as well. He has hired a crew to livestream the tournament. "It think that it's going to be televised is the reason we've doubled in numbers," he said on Sunday morning, June 17, when he

did a little pre-tournament fishing with a reporter on board. The television show will go international on the World Fishing Network and will stream online on Waypoint TV. On Father's Day, Massey - dad to Skeeter, an 11-year old lab that would rather swim than ride shotgun in Massey's Skeeter bass boat, stayed home where it was cool - was out trolling the hot spots. Armed with his four bait-casters set up with a jig, spinner, jerkbait or Senko, the bow of his boat is all storage, as it the norm for these boats with a 250-hp motor. He's equipped with everything but a bathroom but he can make do. Those live-wells are good for emergencies, he says with a laugh. The trolling motor is used most of the time, he says. Matt Massey checks in on his Big Rideau Lake hot spots for bass Sunday, June 17 prior to the opening of the Renegade Bass Tour June 23 and 24. He'll compete in the tournament this year with Travis Raison. The June 23 event at the Rideau Ferry Harbour is the Q1 event; July 2, the Q2 event will be held on Lake St. Francis in Cornwall; June 21, the Q3 event is in Morrisburg, and the Q4 will be held Aug. 18 on Dog, Cranberry and Whitefish lakes in Seeley's Bay. The spot for the Sept. 8/9 classic will be announced. One hundred per cent of all entry fees go back to the anglers in prize money, Massey says. There is a big fish prize for each tournament. This year, there is a $75,000 boat/motor unit up for grabs for the grand champion anglers. For this Q1 Saturday, the anglers are aiming at a 19-pound bag for the win. Last year's largest fish weighed in at 6.04 pounds.Special guest broadcaster Rob (RJ) Jackson is the on-the-water host. Visitors to Rideau Ferry may also catch a glimpse of such pro anglers as Charles Sim of Montreal, who is favoured to win. Lenny Devos and Jeff Desloges are also on tap for the Q1. you to your spot in a hurry," Massey says. "It's this little one that does 90 per cent of the work all day." His GPS allows him to mark his favourite fishing spots, as it finds the safest places to navigate around the shallow areas of the lake where dead trees and shoals are hiding. "You don't have to spend $80,000 on a boat to fish," he says. "Don't let that be a barrier to entry into a tournament." Massey started to fish seriously about 12 years ago, he says, making him 44 now. He started fishing from a kayak. He laughs when he says he can't take it (his savings) with him, so he might as well invest in fishing. The Renegade Bass Tournament is a live-release series. They boast a mortality rate of less than two per cent. "These fish are out of the water maybe two seconds throughout the weigh-in process," he says. The fish are kept in live wells on the boats, and then carried in bags filled with water to holding tanks to be weighed in. Once they're weighed - a combined weight of five fish between the two anglers per boat - they are taken back to the live well boat and taken back to a sheltered spot on the lake. "They're disoriented for a few days maybe," Massey says, "but in general, they find their way back home. For some, it may take a little longer - the largemouth are lazier so it may take them longer." Massey talks about the work of Dr. Bruce Tufts of Tufts' Lab at Queen's University of Kingston. This ongoing study is using "state of the art" biotelemetry technology to provide additional insights into the natural movements of bass, as well as their ability to navigate back to their home ranges when they are displaced in tournaments. "He's done a lot of work to know how they move," Massey says. For this self-professed urban redneck who is a marketing guru, he says fishing is the best way to relax. He's been around the water all his life, and says most of his good friends are fellow anglers. "All of my closes friends I've met fishing," he says. "There is a lot of camaraderie, but I do what it takes to win."

As an RPN at Lanark Lodge for 35 years, I have had the privilege of working with incredible staff. My interaction with every department throughout the years only confirms the utmost appreciation and respect I have for each and everyone of you. I want to thank you for all you do in your work and for you to know that it’s been an absolute honour to have worked alongside you all these past many years. My hope for you is that you continue to be proud of the work you do, the person you are and the difference you make. They are why I do what I do and I am so fortunate that I have been able to do this for 35 years. Now, onto the next adventure and chapter of Retirement life. Cheers Cindy Young RPN

November 2, 1929 May 28, 2018 Henry passed away peacefully at home in Carleton Place on Monday, May 28th. Born in Holbaek, Denmark, he chose to make Canada his new home and moved here in 1952 with Bente Jorgensen, where they settled and raised their four children on Grandview Road. An entrepreneur extraordinaire, Henry successfully established businesses both in Ottawa and on Vancouver Island. An avid outdoorsman and carpenter by trade, he built Pan-Abode log homes, flew his own float plane to build cottages in eastern Ontario and Quebec, traveled internationally to teach others about constructing log homes, and entertained guests from around the world at a bed and breakfast he and wife of 42 years, Patricia, ran in Victoria. Never one to let any moss grow under his feet, Henry always said there could only be one boss and he lived life his way. Survived by his wife, Patricia, his children [Anita, Kathy (Mark), Sonja (Grant), Brian and Teri], his grandchildren [Davin, Kirsten (Richard), Brett, Braden and Ryley], and his great-grandchildren [Torben and Tecwyn]. He leaves behind of legacy of what it means to live your life to the fullest. He always said he wished he could do it one more time because he had so much fun. We should all be so lucky! Henry’s family will be hosting a Celebration of Life on Saturday, June 23rd from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. at 244 William Street in Carleton Place. We invite all who were fortunate enough to have had an opportunity to get to know Henry in some way to join us and share stories and memories. Please stop by and enjoy some Danish-style smorgasbord, the meal he enjoyed the most, and lift a glass and skål the memory of a man who will be missed by many. An RSVP to sonja.garvey@live.ca would be appreciated, but is not essential. We look forward to seeing everyone.

Members of the police foundations program at the Perth campus of Algonquin College join Perth Physiotherapy clinic owner Catherine Bell, program coordinator Gerry Salisbury, and Derrick Dixon, president of the Perth chapter of the Canadian Cancer Society, on Thursday, May 31 for the cheque presentation to the society, for the $4,150 raised from the Battle in the Saddle.

Battle in the Saddles raises $4,150 for Perth chapter of cancer society DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@metroland.com Battle in the Saddle participants can now sit tall in the saddle after they raised more than $4,150 during the inaugural charity event. The first-ever Battle in the Saddle was held in front of Perth Physiotherapy on Rogers Road on May 12, and was organized by police foundations students and staff at Algonquin College's Perth campus. "I am very proud of the students and the efforts they put in," said program co-ordinator Gerry Salisbury in front of the campus on Thursday, May 31, after the cheque presentation. "It integrates them into the community," and lets Perth know "how important the campus is to the community." The event saw members of the emergency services (fire, ambulance, police) and other participants take shifts on stationary bikes at Perth Physio-

therapy to raise money for cancer services. "The funds will stay local in the Perth area," confirmed Derrick Dixon, president of the Canadian Cancer Society's Perth chapter. “The money is earmarked for the Wheels of Hope program, which, in 2016, saw 84 people seek transportation to cancer services in Ottawa and Kingston, like chemotherapy, at an average cost of $800 per person, according to Cancer Society spokesperson Cathy James. "Imagine if you couldn't get to your (appointments)," said Dixon, coming on top of a cancer diagnosis. "We thought it was a nice marriage of (stationary bikes) and Wheels of Hope," said James later. "It was a huge community collaboration," between the policing students, firefighters, the physiotherapy clinic, and even M&M meat shops who donated the barbecue equipment and food.
