WATER TAXI BIG HIT DURING RIBFEST

BEAR SIGHTING NEAR ALGONQUIN COLLEGE A bear has been sighted within the past couple of days in the South Street area near Algonquin College in Perth. In a statement from the town on Tuesday, July 31, it says that it is not unusual for bears to come within town limits from time to time. It is important that this does not become a nuisance animal. "Generally, bears want to avoid humans. Most encounters are not aggressive and attacks are rare." The town also caution about knowing the difference between an emergency and non-emergency situation. If you feel you are in immediate danger call 911 or your local police. If you feel a bear poses an immediate threat to personal safety, or if a bear enters a school yard when school is in session, enters or tries to enter a residence, wanders into a public gathering, kills livestock/pets and lingers at the site, or stalks people and lin-

gers at the site, call 911. For non-emergencies, call the Bear Wise reporting line at 1-866-514-2327 (between April 1 and Nov. 30) if a bear is roaming around, checking garbage cans, breaking into a shed where garbage or food is stored, in a tree, pulling down a bird feeder or knocking over a barbecue, moving through a backyard or field but is not lingering. To be bear safe, store garbage in waste containers with tight-fitting lids. Put garbage out only on the morning of pickup. Fill bird feeders, including seed, suet and nectar only during the winter when bears are hibernating. Clean food residue and remove grease from outdoor barbecue grills after each use, and keep pet food indoors . From Dec. 1 to March 31, please contact your local Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry District office at 1-800-667-1940.

DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@metroland.com The Perth Ribfest and Music Festival's new water taxi service certainly made a huge splash with patrons. Ribfest organizers with the Perth Rotary Club estimate that as many as 3,000 passengers were ferried between the docks at Last Duel Park and the Tay Basin, from Friday, July 27, to Sunday, July 29. More than 10,000 visitors enjoyed the weekend event. While Frank Larabie, president of the Rotary Club, wrote that he had "not yet received the final amounts of money raised," in an Aug. 1 email exchange, "you can be assured it will not be long before it is being distributed to various programs and organizations in the community." He reminded ribfest supporters that plans are already underway for next

year's extravaganza from July 26 to 28, 2019. Don Creppin, while visiting the park dozens of times, actually saw very little of the ribfest - he was too busy making sure to steer clear of paddlers on the waterway, as he captained one of two water taxis on the Tay. "It was all their idea," chortled Creppin, dealer principal at Perth Powersports and Marine, during an interview at his office off of Highway 7 on Tuesday, July 31, since the water taxi idea was put forward by the Rotary Club. "We said, 'We're in.'" But Creppin admitted that he was not aware what a " hidden jewel" Last Duel Park was, and when he heard that he would be docking there, he wondered: "At the cemetery?" referring to the Old Burying Ground across the road. His company used to do a static display at ribfest back when it was at the Perth Fairgrounds, but he was delighted to be part of the festival. "It's too bad the basin can't be used," by bigger

craft, he lamented, suggesting that a drawbridge could be used at Craig Street instead of the static one that restricts the size of boat that can go under. His boat's "Bimini" top had to be taken off to provide enough clearance, and this paper observed that children were able to touch the bottom of the bridge, standing on top of the benches, as the craft went under. By expanding docking capacity at Last Duel Park, and allowing bigger boats into the basin, "it'd put Westport to shame, it'd put Merrickville to shame." And the basin, "you could just fill it." While he enjoys boating on the Big Rideau, "I've been converted," when it comes to plying the waters of the Tay. Asked if he would be back next year, he replied, "Oh, God, yes, we are in." He pointed to one 99year-old Perth resident who took the taxi, who had never, to her recollection, sailed on that portion of the Tay in her life. He commended Parks Canada for opening the

Beckwith Street swing bridge for the weekend, though they may have been a little too keen to swing it back into place before his last sailing on Sunday. Everyone on board had to duck down to under the bridge, now back in place, and, upon returning without passengers, even with him ducking down, the boat barely made it, with only inches to spare. He commended the Rotary Club to "utilize these two hidden gems," both the park and the basin, adding that he too would like to see Le Boat watercraft, many based in Smiths Falls, take a detour up to Perth. "This town should take advantage of it," he said. On Saturday morning, the Perth Farmers' Market operates out of the Crystal Palace beside the basin, and he said that he ferried a number of market patrons to the park. "They complement each other," he said. In fact, members of the Rotary Club were handing out maps of downtown at the park, to encourage crosspromotion.

RIBFEST'S NEW LOCATION, WATER TAXI SERVICE A HIT AT FOURTH-ANNUAL EVENT DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@ metroland.com Ribfest's new location and water taxi service have both proved to be a hit. The Perth Ribfest and Music Festival, now in its fourth year, began its life at the Perth fairgrounds, but the cool shade of the trees of Last Duel Park, and the Tay Canal, proved quite the lure for festival organizers and, it would seem, the public as well, who flocked to the site beside the Old Burying Ground on Craig Street the whole weekend, from July 27 to 29. The two water taxis, provided by Perth Powersports and Marine, plied the waterways between the Last Duel Park docks and the Tay Basin, where, on Saturday morning, the Perth Farmers' Market was taking place at the Crystal Palace, and proved to be popular with visitors. The event also boasted a

OPINION EDITORIAL

INCREASE FINES FOR BUTTHEADS One of our reporters had every reason last week to fume upon seeing a smouldering cigarette butt lying on the gravel shoulder of a local road, likely thrown out of a passing car's window. Prior to recent rains, the woods and fields throughout the Ottawa Valley were tinder dry. In fact, Mississippi Mills remains under a partial burn ban. Several fires broke out in Lanark County, including a 10-acre blaze on a farm outside of Perth, as well as the loss of livestock and a barn in a July 17 Toledo fire. So with the possibility of forest fires so high, it's plain stupid to flip cigarette butts into the grass or bush along our roadways. And illegal too. Fortunately more and more smokers realize that it's not acceptable to leave their butts lying around. Remember when gathering places in our communities had piles of butts littered outside after a major event. Gross. Especially for those tasked with cleaning them up. Now most smokers deposit their butts in receptacles provided for their convenience. But there are still those who think it's acceptable and safe to litter the landscape with their butts. They seem to think that one cloudburst will erase all worries about roadside fires. However, it's apparent that while Smiths Falls can get a dousing, an area a few kilometres down the road can be missed completely by the storm. Our careless smokers seem to believe that because of our deciduous forests Ontarians don't face the danger from fire they do in B.C. and Alberta. Wrong. Serious forest fires up the line from Petawawa and now in the Parry Sound area have affected traffic and air quality in those areas. It's just fortunate no homes have been lost, so far. Last summer's devastating fires in British Columbia and Alberta sparked those provinces to crack down on motorists who throw 'lit debris' out their windows. In B.C. fines under the wildlife and highway acts can range from $175 to $575 for offenders. Vancouver has boosted the fine to $500 for those drivers caught "tossing smoking material in a hazardous way." Willow Creek in Alberta has instituted fines from between $500 and $10,000 if your butt starts a bush or grass fire. And it's not just Canada. Washington State has boosted the fine to $1,025 during fire bans. The $500 fine in Western Australia rises up to a maximum of $25,000 and/or 12 months in jail if the offence happens during fire season. Ontario's police tend to levy littering fines ranging from $110 to $180 if they notice flagrant instances. As the danger from forest fires grows in Ontario, it's time the province follows the lead of many other jurisdictions in giving police the discretion of imposing much higher fines if butts are thrown out during a fire ban. The danger is real. That has to be impressed on the few who are still oblivious to how perilous and unsightly their habit is of improperly discarding cigarette butts.

Ford, Gwen and Lexi are three of my favourite "humans." Ford, or Sweet Baby as you all know him, is a Newfoundlander. Gwen, my mom, is not - she's just feisty and doesn't care what she says or who hears her otherwise! One day I hope to be just like her. Heck, who am I kidding, I am already there! And Lexi, of course, is my doggy child who keeps us on our toes. Nope, she's not a TV-watching dog, my wonderful vet, Kevin, told me when she was just a wee lassie. Between the three of them, there is never a dull

moment. It's a sideshow half the time. The other half, I'm trying to figure out what one said, or the other meant, or I'm on a road/foot tour with Lexi. Get Sweet Baby on the phone with one of his sisters and I have no idea what they're talking about. (Side bar, I think we are married ... pretty sure he said 'I do.') Mom was visiting recently, and was sitting at the kitchen table. Lexi, now 75 pounds of 'tude, was trying to get on her lap, or at least up in her face for kisses. She loves her grandma and won't settle until Mom gives her some attention. "Go sit down dog, you're worse than your mother! Pacing and yapping."

But she's also like Sweet Baby, who loves a good steak. He often saves her a sandwich from his lunch, but heaven forbid if he forgets. This causes sleep talking sometimes. "We've got to get that dog a steak," he said while in a deep slumber one night. "She's eating way too many sandwiches." STEPHANIE GRAY WRITES ABOUT HER TRIP TO PHOENIX WITH LOCAL GYMNASTS STEPHANIE GRAY Column

There's nothing quite like sports to bring people together. OK ... well ... there's lots of other things - like food and drink and cottages and crises and so on, but today I'm going to talk about sports. I have found this principle to be true with my karate family, but there's another family I'm part of that has demonstrated it time and again: Gymnastics.

To be clear, I am not a gymnast. If I do a backflip, it won't be on purpose and I'll probably end up at physio, and possibly the hospital. I am definitely not pursuing any Cirque du Soleil dreams. My talented and flexible daughter is the family gymnast. Girlchild has had the great fortune to become involved with Saltos Athletics, a Perth-based club that specializes in aerobic gymnastics. It's a sport that requires stamina, precision, flexibility, strength, grace, co-ordination and a whole pile of skill. Not to mention sparkly outfits and very slick hairdos. Girlchild has progressed to the national team, so for the past two years she has joined other Saltos athletes as part of Team Canada. With two other Ontario clubs they have competed at an inter-

national event - the Association of National Aerobics Championships. This year, 15 countries travelled to Phoenix, Ariz. for a week of competition, and our Saltos representatives brought home a silver for a group routine that Girlchild was part of, and bronze medal for an another Saltos group routine! Several of our girls were in the finals, and one was the flag bearer for the Canadian team. What an experience it is for these young women to work together and travel as a team to demonstrate not only their skills, but also their poise, and manners and positive attitudes. As gymnastics parents we watch them grow and excel. From the start of the season in September until the championships at the end of July, these athletes train hard several hours a week. Throughout the sea-

son, parents work on fundraising activities to support their attendance at competitions. Oh, and we are cheerleaders. What makes it a family, though, is to see the girls come together to support one another. That's what teams are supposed to do, but this extends beyond the gym and into their daily lives. The older girls are role models - like big sisters - for the littles. The head coach and assistant coaches look after everyone and are mentors. The parents watch out for their own kids and everyone else's, too. That is especially awesome when it comes to dealing with competition hair. Every family has its drama, and as soon as you

throw competition hair into the mix, well ... let's just say that last year Girlchild and I came to an understanding about how the whole hairdo thing would go down. And this year my wonderful roommate in Phoenix - a hairdresser was able to offer some tips that should de-escalate future hair drama (thank you, Amy!). When the team travels, we work hard to represent our community and our country well. As a gymnastics family, we try to instil good sportsmanship in the team. Respect each other and your competitors. Be polite. Show grace whether you do well, or not as well as you had hoped. Shake hands with your competitors. Make people

glad they had a chance to meet you. It's important to note that every family needs support from an extended family, and for Saltos that is our community. The sponsors, and donations, and participation in fundraisers that Perth and beyond has provided to our team is phenomenal, and it makes it easier for these athletes to continue their gymnastics journey and dreams. Thank you for that. Go Canada!

Lanark County, in partnership with Valley Heartland Community Futures Development Corp. (CFDC), is set to launch a business retention and expansion (BR+E) project that aims to build and strengthen local business. The project, delivered by Valley Heartland CFDC, will benefit from $28,450 in funding under the Community Innovation stream of the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario's Eastern Ontario Development Program. "Statistics from 2016 show that in Lanark County, 85 per cent of our employment comes from

small businesses, so it's very important that we nurture and support our business community, and what better way to do that than a BR+E project," says Lanark County Warden John Fenik (Perth Mayor). The initiative consists of recruiting and training volunteers to visit businesses and conduct confidential interviews/surveys with senior management or owners. These face-to-face meetings will be key to understanding the challenges and opportunities that businesses face daily. The goal is to build capacity for continued BR+E among the participants, and the information gathered through the

process will inform strategic action planning and implementation. The information collected will also be vital for long-term economic development planning to support continued business retention and expansion and inform the development of community policies, programs and initiatives to support businesses, including those provided by Valley Heartland CFDC. "The BR+E project is in direct response to the recently completed Lanark County economic development strategic plan 20182020 that identified a countywide BR+E as a key priority action for implemen-

tation under the theme of supporting entrepreneurs and business owners," says Kurt Greaves, Lanark County chief administrative officer. "It's very exciting to see such swift implementation of one of the top priorities from the strategic plan, and the county is looking forward to working with Valley Heartland CFDC, and all eight of our local municipalities, and their business communities, on this BR+E project." The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs will also play a significant role through the use of its BR+E Tool. The tool pro-

vides guidance and training on established interview framework for gathering business development data in Ontario. The ministry BR+E program was first introduced in 1998 and has since seen more than 230 communities participate, with more than 8,100 businesses interviewed across the province. The BR+E project includes the recent hiring of Teri Devine, a seasoned economic development professional, to co-ordinate the project over the next year. "We are very fortunate to have Teri on board," says Stacie Lloyd, regional economic development officer, Valley

Heartland CFDC. "Having strong co-ordination with a project of this size is important to ensure great results, including learning about and responding to local business issues and opportunities, and setting priorities and goals for continued business retention and expansion in Lanark County," adds Tina Stevens, general manager, Valley Heartland CFDC. For more information about the Lanark County BR+E project, updates and timely information, please visit www.valleycfdc.com/bre.

SHALOM! JEWISH CAMPERS VISIT PERTH TOWN HALL, ENGAGE IN MINI QUESTION PERIOD DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@ metroland.com From questions about tough decisions, to taxes, to John Gemmell's favourite ice cream flavour, campers from Camp Shomria turned a visit to Perth Town Hall into question period last month. Deputy Mayor John Gemmell welcomed the delegation from the Jewish summer camp at Otty Lake on Tuesday, July 31. While Mayor John Fenik had originally agreed to meet with the students, some Ca-

nadian, some Israeli, a conflict arose in his schedule, so he called upon Gemmell to fill in for him. Several students filled in the places of councillors and town hall staffers, with Gemmell playfully telling some of the campers who they were representing at each seat. Stopping at Coun. Judy Brown's table, Gemmell pointed to the female camper seated there and said: "You (Brown) have been around a while. You're a really smart person." The visit came during a

quiet period in the town's municipal election year cycle - after the nominations had closed, but before politicians went hard-core campaigning after Labour Day, but Gemmell still brought forward a bit of a civics lesson. "Wards, we don't have them any more. We're elected at large," he said of councillors. "I think it's a better way of doing things, personally." He also explained how Lanark County council is made up of mayors, deputy mayors, and other elected politicians from across the county, who, in turn elect a warden to oversee the county (Fenik is this year's warden, and Gemmell has served in that capacity in the past.) Born to run? After a career in the navy, 13 years as a firefighter, and 27 years with the OPP, Gemmell was asked how he came to a career in politics after serving his country in other ways. Gems recalled that the moment came in the summer of 2003, when he was playing cards with a friend on summer evening. "I was talking about something in town," he said. After discussing the problem at hand, and possible solutions, his friend looked at him and said,

Desmond Devoy/Metroland Members of Camp Shomria at Otty Lake pose with Deputy Mayor John Gemmell during a visit to Perth town hall on Tuesday, July 31. "Why don't you get involved in council?" "I'm gonna," he remembered replying. Later, his friend "slammed" $100 down on the table. "That's for your nomination papers," said his friend, putting his money where his mouth is. Growing up on military bases around the country, "we had to take part in our community," said Gemmell, so he grew up with that civic mindset. "Take care of where you live." There was just one hiccup - he was still a serving police officer. His request, to run for elected office while still in uniform, had to go up the chain of command, all the way to the OPP commissioner in Orillia. "They didn't know what to do," admitted Gemmell.

It was decided that he could run, but that he would have to recuse himself from any discussions on policing matters, which means, in essence, "you have to leave the room," said Gemmell to the youngsters. But, in a practical matter, at Perth town council, "we just sit over there," he said, pointing to the public gallery," and keep quiet. He also explained how the council and committee of the whole (COW) system works, calling them "COW meetings, just like cow, moo!" he said to some laughter and bemused looks from the young people. Election year Gemmell acknowledged that, yes, it was an election year, and that he was running for mayor against Coun. Jim Boldt and Fenik. "We're very good

friends," said Gemmell of Fenik. "We're running against each other." Gemmell, like Fenik, has been acclaimed in 2010 and 2014, so "I have to go find my signs! I have to find where I put stuff," after the 2006 race. He did make clear though, when one camper asked him about his election priorities as a mayoral candidate, that "this is not the venue for me to run for election," he said, though he did say that, in a small town like Perth, he was looking forward to knocking on every door in town. One camper asked Gemmell about relations with the local media. "You have to pick your words carefully at times," said Gemmell. He joked that, some weeks, he will pick up a copy of the newspaper and say, "'I said what?!' Once it's out there, it's out there." When it comes to other printed material, "I'm reading reports all the time," he said. And "woe to the person who does not read it (a report)," he said. Other countries have more direct local involvement in schooling, but, in answering a question from another camper, Gemmell stated that there is little local council involvement in town schools, that is a provincial matter for the most part. of the more difficult matters he has had to deal with on council, Gemmell said disbanding the Perth Police Service and moving to the OPP in 2013 was a difficult decision. "Sometimes we have to do what is best for the community," said Gemmell. With the policing move, "there as a lot of animosity. People were upset. People were very, very vocal. I got calls at my home." But he gave the campers some practical advice when it comes to politics: "You don't take it personal. Once you take it personal, you lose control of the situation." He added that "you can make mistakes, guys, just learn from it, and (remember) not to make it again." And politics is not a vanity project or popularity contest either.

"It's something you have to want to do," he said. "It's not something you do for fun. It's a commitment." Food choice Gemmell's more cautious, politically correct comments actually revolved around local food choices. When asked his favourite restaurant in Perth, he said, "I like them all. I can't get in trouble with that one!" He did venture though that "I like wings," especially the chicken wings served at The Red Fox pub. Yael Dar, a young girl visiting from Sitria, Israel, about 45 minutes south of Tel Aviv, asked Gemmell his favourite ice cream flavour. "Vanilla," responded Gemmell, which was met by some groans and laughs from his young audience for his uber-safe answer. The campers, who elect their own camp council,

made up of young people, essentially run the camp, in a social justice, collective-like environment that one might find on an Israeli kibbutz or collective farm, though there are adult counsellors who help guide the youth council when needed. When the campers heard a statement that they enjoyed, or thought interesting, or agreed with, they would snap their fingers collectively. Gemmell was asked about Perth's religious and ethnic makeup. "(Mostly) Scottish by nature, but it is getting diversified," said Gemmell. But when it came to religion, "that's one thing you don't talk about," he said. He joked that, in 1860, Perth had two churches and seven pubs. "I think it's reversed now!" he said. The heaviest question of the morning, however, saw Gemmell deal with that penultimate Canadian question - how do you deal with mosquitoes? "We're Canadians!" he said. "We get used to them after a while."

The Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit has issued an alert in response to an increase in opioid overdoses in the region. The health unit says they've received five over-

dose reports since July 26, and a total of eight reports in the last two weeks, including one suspected fatal overdose. In contrast, the health unit says that they've been

averaging three to four overdose reports a month in 2018. Most of the overdose reports received in the past two weeks from Leeds, Grenville, and Lanark have

been linked to the use of purple heroin, the health unit says. The health unit advises people to be aware and use safely since there has been an increase of drug over-

doses in the area.

DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@metroland.com Unfortunately, Perth's Project Trauma Support program has proven to be very popular. With 14 "cohorts" so far, and with a total of 150 first responders and military personnel having gone through the PTSD program at Tay River Reflections Medical spa, the program has also recently embarked on a partnership of sorts with the Perth Royal Canadian Legion Branch 244. "I've been working with Manuela to try to get the legion involved," said Corp. Stacey Niceliu (retired), the Perth legion's sergeant-at-arms, on July 25. "Provincial command has allowed us to sponsor a veteran," who is in need of the help, and is still serving in the Canadian Armed Forces with money from the Poppy Fund to the tune of $7,000. Niceliu retired from the OPP last September after 30 years and was also in the Canadian Army reserve, where he went on a tour to Alert, Nunavut, though members of his regiment have seen service overseas. His grandfather was a Canadian soldier who was part of the Allied invasion of Italy during the Second World War. You are not alone "We work with a lot of veterans," said Dr. Manuela Joannou who runs the PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) program. "There's no shortage of those suffering, unfortunately." The clinic usually attracts a 50/50 mix of military and first responders, but when it comes to military "many of our veterans have had multiple tours," and "Afghanistan is featuring very prominently." When clients leave the program, some are prompted to start up support groups in their own hometowns, to create an "instant community of people who know right away what you are going through." Creating this type of community is important because "you cannot heal from this type of injury alone. You really need a community." Alumni from the program are now going out and "finding friends who are hiding in their basements," Joannou said. "They don't feel as helpless in reaching out, they feel they may have new tools to offer."

Desmond Devoy/Metroland From left, Dr. Manuela Joannou accepts a cheque for $7,000 from the Perth Royal Canadian Legion's Poppy Fund, from the Legion's Sergeant-at-Arms, Corp. (retired) Stacey Niceliu, centre, and OPP Cons. Dave Blair, at the Legion's stained glass windows on Wednesday, July 25. There are now peer support groups in Ontario communities like Meaford, Belleville, Kingston, Guelph, Smiths Falls and Ottawa. Each cohort lasts six days long, and "we pack a lot into six days," she said with a smile. "We make them realize that their body is lying to them; they can handle a full day's schedule. We hope to break the spell that their injury has held over them." Part of the process involves bringing "honour" to the stories of the PTSD sufferers, since "you can get through almost anything if you can tell your story and attach some meaning to it," Joannou said. "Your life can have meaning again." Personal impact "They all have this greatness within them," said OPP Const. Dave Blair, who has helped Joannou with the program since it launched in early 2016, in looking at the people who go through the program. But even with the help these men and women are getting, there are many who are not seeking help. "It is a crisis," said Blair. "It's an epidemic." He was effusive in his praise of Joannou, saying "people need to know this lady right here," he said. Blair has been through a similar program himself, in California, and "I'm there. I'm seeing it. I

wouldn't be here if it didn't have merit ... I've benefitted from it. I get to be the face (of it) in the police world," locally he said. Many first responders or military personnel will try to tough it out, to get over it, to move beyond it. "The mask is there. I know myself," said Blair. "I know. I couldn't pull myself out." Even after they have left their six-day stint, the need for community continues and ongoing connection is facilitated through social media, texts, phone calls and emails. Blair is still on his California cohort's Facebook page, which only he and other cohort members can access. If a member is having a bad day, and having suicidal thoughts, they may post a message like "Thinking of checking out. Life sucks," Blair said of the types of messages he has seen. Blair, or another group member, will then contact that person, and ask "Hey, saw your post. What do you need?" For first responders too, PTSD "is the No. 1 human resources issue," Blair said. Speaking of the new partnership between the Legion and the Project Trauma Support, Blair said "we are extremely grateful for this partnership." Looking at Niceliu, he smiled and said, "We've got your six," militarytalk that translates as "we've got your back."

The very popular Classic Theatre Festival production of Shaw's Mrs. Warren's Profession draws to a close this weekend, Aug. 12, with final shows running every day at 2 p.m., with an 8 p.m. show on Saturday evening at 54 Beckwith St. E. in Perth. "In addition to the fabulous debate the show is sparking, audiences have really enjoyed the work of our top-notch cast," says associate producer Matthew Behrens. "Every day at the theatre, they are ask-

ing why the faces on the stage look so familiar. Part of the reason is that in addition to playing on stages across the country, they also appear frequently in film and television." Indeed, Mrs. Warren is played by Catherine McNally, who trained in London, England at the London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art. She is an international fellow with Shakespeare's Globe Theatre and also received the prestigious Christopher Plummer Fellowship

Award. She's frequently seen on TV in such shows as Murdoch Mysteries, Saving Hope, Degrassi, Due South and Goosebumps, to name a few. McNally has also shared screen time with award-winning actors Madeleine Stowe, Richard Schiff, Mark Rylance, Eva Marie Saint, Rachel Weisz, Yannick Bisson, Lindsay Lohan, Margaret Colin, Enrico Corolino, Ving Rhames, Clement Virgo, Maggie Greenwald and Ken Finkleman.

Other cast members, including Anna Burkholder (who also trained in the U.K.), Nicholas Rice, Colin Legge, Kyle Orzech, and Douglas Hughes, are in-demand performers who have travelled the length of this country and abroad to take on a wide variety of roles. Once the show comes down on Aug. 12, it will be replaced by the festival's annual mystery thriller, a gripping psychological tale about mind games and a cat-and-mouse struggle for survival. Angel Street (also known by its alternative title, Gaslight) has long been considered one of the top works of the thriller genre, one that features an un-

SUPPORT LAWS AT ITS NEXT GARAGE SALE AUG. 11

Willy

Submitted/LAWS

Saturday Aug. 11, from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m., marks our next garage sale! Just a short wait until lots of treasures and a barbecue lunch will be waiting for you. The sale takes place at the shelter, 253 Glenview Rd., Smiths Falls. Please mark your calendars for another fun, very popular, event in Perth at Top Shelf Distillers (14 Warren Cres.) - a Parking Lot Party. At this time canned cat and kitten food (Friskies preferred) as well as bottles of bleach is

most needed. The party is scheduled forFriday, Aug. 17 and begins at 7 p.m. Graven and Silver Creek will perform. This week's featured pets

Willy Please meet friendly Willy! Willy was a stray boy and has not been long at LAWS. He's extremely affectionate, very laid-back and just loves his belly rubs. He's very trusting of humans. He also loves to have

his fur brushed. It's thick and will shine after a good brushing. He must have been somebody's boy as he's overly friendly and gets along well with his roommates. Willy is about four years old and he is available for adoption at LAWS.

Cookie I am Cookie and I am a perfect little princess looking for a new castle to live in! If you are looking to shower a new kitty with love and affection, then I'm your girl. I'll return the affection 10-fold. I'm an expert at playing with toys and would love to do this in my new home. Could you be my Prince Charming? I am available for adoption at the Pet Valu in Carleton Place.

Boots Hi, I am Boots and just two years old. I am a bit of everything you'd expect from a kitty. I enjoy a bit of quiet time, but I am no couch potato. I enjoy my cat naps and I like affection, but I am content to entertain myself until you're ready for me to warm your lap. I guess I am just a little bit of all good things wrapped up in a gorgeous fur-coat that needs regular grooming to keep me looking pretty.

Kensey Meet Kensey, who was found in the Almonte area. She lives for head rubs. They're all she talks about. All day, every day. Try taking her picture ... head buds ... thank you for the attention, head bud. Give her a treat, more head buds. When people come to visit, head rubs. If it's not head rubs or buds, it's toys ... or cuddles! She loves cuddling preferred while all fours on the ground. What a treat she is, and she's pretty too! Thank you for your continued support. STEVE TENNANT ferdburphyll@gmail.com Have you heard yet? Book your tickets now. I'm so tickled to be announcing the Primary Colours Trio is performing a special summer show, hosted by the Listening Room Series on Tuesday, Aug. 21 at the Perth Restaurant, 7 p.m. We were lucky to book them in between their playing Summerfolk Festival - Owen Sound and Hugh's Room - Toronto, hence the odd Tuesday show date rather than our usual Sunday evenings. There are only three primary colours, but they combine to make all the hues of the rainbow.

And then there's the Primary Colours, a brand new trio of sublimely talented roots-acoustic musicians who merge beautiful harmony vocals with striking instrumental prowess, resulting in a full spectrum of songs of unique depth and resonance. Kim Richey, Doug Cox and Linda McRae all have decades of experience as songwriters and performers - and because they're at that point in their careers where they've nothing left to prove, ego gets put aside and it's all about serving the song and honouring the audience. Doug Cox, (Ellen McIlwaine, Amos Garrett, session man) master guitar, dobro and Weissenborn has played house concerts

Submitted/Steve Tennant Primary Colours will perform at the Listening Room Perth Restaurant Aug. 21.

for us five times, always bringing top talent from around the globe. This time is no different as he brings Canadian born, Nashville residing Linda McRae (Spirit of the West), a wonderful singer/ songwriter multi-instrumentalist (clawhammer banjo, electric guitar), called "one of the true, soulful pioneers of honest roots music," by Blackie & the Rodeo King's Colin Linden, Linda brings integrity and commitment to the craft of songwriting. Joining them is Kim Richey, a two time Grammy nominated singer/ songwriter, also from Nashville who's written hits for Radney Foster, Trisha Yearwood, Patty Loveless, among others. Gracing stages around the world, her talent adds beautifully to the mix. Even better, we have a wonderful young opener too! Mia Kelly is an Ottawa/Gatineau-based 15-year-old singer/ songwriter who has been performing for eight years in bands, solo shows and musical theatre. Performance venues include the Black Sheep Inn, Bluesfest, Centrepointe Theatre, CityFolk (Marvest), Festival of Small Halls and Stewart Park Festival. PERTH-BORN GUITARIST FINDS NEW LIFE WITH 'SOME GIANT' IN KINGSTON LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com Curt Sproule has found a big life in Kingston. The Perth-born native, now 33, struggled with mental health issues as child and drug abuse into his teen and young adult years. He moved to the city in 2007 to follow his passion - music. Now settled and sober, he is a guitarist in a band called, Some Giant, an energetic, alternative rock band with a Stone Temple Pilot vibe. Band members include Shaun Gall, vocals/guitar; Justin Brake, bass and Martyn Piper, percussion. They're preparing for a live performance album release Aug. 16 (at a mystery location) with a promotional interview scheduled with Bill Welychka on CKWS TV in Kingston Aug. 9.His message to others who may be struggling? "Don't be afraid to ask for help or accept it when it is offered."

THE ROAD TO KINGSTON After playing with various groups, (from the early days of Beautiful Inferno he started with mates from Perth, T3RR3STRiAL and Fossils & Gospels), Sproule

has been with Some Giant for the past year. "Within a short amount of time Some Giant has played sold out shows, recorded an album and successfully released a single to Kingston radio stations," he said. "When I first arrived in Kingston, I attended as many Punk and Metal shows as I could afford ... meeting people, making connections, relentlessly sending emails to venues and promoters, asking for shows. Once we proved ourselves, shows were easy to get. I have accumulated a lot of connections and contacts in the music scene during my time here maintaining those initial relationships, while creating new ones with each new project, expanding my reach, growing my network." He said that with the recent media exposure, he hopes to create an "even greater awareness of our band, giving us more credibility within the community, creating some hype and anticipation for the upcoming live album." Not many local bands make live albums, he said. "Some Giant is a relatively new band, but we have been climbing the ranks

GROWING UP Sproule was the shy, quiet kid in school, a loner on the playground. He attended Perth and District Collegiate High School. The son of Margaret and Barry, Sproule said he has a close relationship with them, and they were, and still are, supportive of his music. But it wasn't easy. "I was a very introverted, shy young man," he said. The youngest child was a lone wolf on the playground. He spent most of his time drawing and writing fictional stories, with an obsession with Ghostbusters and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

"Growing up, there was always great music being played on our stereo," he said. "Dad introduced me to classic rock (Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, The Who) and through my older brothers I discovered a lot of great music from the 1990s' alternative rock scene." His brother Ryan he had a lot of instruments in the house. "The band Silverchair inspired me to learn an instrument, as they, too, were young musicians, although older than I was. I was 13 when I first picked up a bass, switched to six-string guitar at age 16 and started taking it more seriously, dedicating more time to learning how to play. I

learned a few chords and starting writing my own songs." Sproule developed Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) at age seven. When it first started occurring, he said he didn't know what was happening and chose not to talk to his parents about it. "My parents and teachers started to notice certain behaviours as I got older, as I became less able to hide it from them. I was eventually diagnosed with OCD, anxiety, and manic depression at age 13 and was give medication." His drug use started

with marijuana and alcohol at age 13, then he said, he progressed in to hallucinogens and opiates in his late teens/early adult years, mixed with medications. "The medications made me feel numb. Neutral. Neither high nor low. The other narcotics and alcohol were like a warm hug and I felt a little less alone." When his parents visited his place in Perth (age 20), Sproule said they took a look at his living conditions and told him to pack his things, as he was going home. It was at this point when his mother bought him a puppy - a Yorkie-Poo they named Mia.

"She was like a beacon; gave me more purpose, responsibility, and a reason not to be so selfish," he said of his new pet. "She played a significant role in the betterment of my well-being." As he was learning to cope being sober at home, Sproule said he spent most of his time writing music and lyrics in his parents' basement. "They lived in the country, so drugs weren't too accessible, and I stopped spending so much time in town. During that time, before moving to Kingston, I would occasionally accept drugs at a party, but that was happening less and less."

At age 22 he moved to Kingston. Many of his friends/high school band mates had moved to Kingston to attend St. Lawrence College or Queen's University. "I followed a year later to pursue a music career with them and am still friends with them now, occasionally still collaborating. I knew there was a great music scene (in Kingston)." He then stopped taking street drugs, and his medication. "At age 25, (I) started drinking more frequently and found myself in unhealthy relationships, which fuelled my consumption. By age 28, after ending those relationships, I was completely sober and have been since," he said.

Betsy Smith, a Kingston Jazz pianist/singer songwriter, had Sproule join her for a couple of performances. "Initially, she had asked me to open a show for her with a different project of mine. The person I was

working with at the time was unavailable, so I volunteered to play guitar during her performance. We did a couple of shows together and I enjoyed the experience, but wanted to focus on my band (Fossils & Gospels) who was about to return from a hiatus. I felt at home in that band, much more of an attachment to the material, as I was involved in its creation. I have done some audio engineering work for friends as well. Either recording their songs, or mixing and editing their work." The best part about performing he said is the energy. Everyone is having fun. "We (the audience and the performers) are having fun together." But sometimes it's difficult to get on stage and entertain when you are not feeling well, he said, "either physically or mentally. You can sometimes channel that negative energy and release it on stage. It's difficult to entertain people, or even want to try, when you're not feeling comfortable with yourself or your environment."

His music gave him focus to get and stay sober. Music has its purpose for Sproule. "It's a creative, positive outlet."

THE FUTURE At this point, Sproule said he has no dreams or ambitions for rock stardom. "I would like to find myself in a situation where I am gigging regularly enough to be able to financially sustain myself just from music, without the need for a day job," he said. "I also very much enjoy doing work as an audio engineer; mostly on my own stuff, but have been tasked with recording, editing, mixing music for others as well. I would like to get more experience with that." He said in five years he sees himself still writing, still performing and recording, but with whom? He's not sure. "I would like to have my own professional home recording studio one day. Invest in better equipment. Work with as many artists as possible."

JEFF MAGUIRE WRITES ABOUT PREMIERE'S PLAN TO REDUCE MUNICIPAL COUNCILS JEFF MAGUIRE Column

The decision by newly elected Ontario Premier Doug Ford to cut Toronto City Council nearly in half has created a wave of controversy in Canada's biggest city and moved the usually low-key subject of municipal politics squarely into the spotlight. The timing of the move, coming as it did just as nominations for provincewide municipal elections in October were closing, is highly questionable. Ford hasn't done himself or his Progressive Conservative government any favours by appearing to be dictatorial and immovable on this subject. I don't agree with Ford's

timing or the proposed methodology. However I do think the premier is on the right track with the idea of reducing the size of municipal councils, in our largest municipalities at least. During the election campaign, which ended with a Tory majority government, Ford vowed to reduce what I will term "the bloat" which has afflicted municipal government in this province for far too long. It's a nation-wide problem to be honest. Government is far too big, far too complicated and it is getting larger and more complex. People are fed up with this trend and, in part, that's why the PC's are back in power at Queen's Park. At the same time I can understand the dismay expressed by Toronto Mayor John Tory with respect to how this particular idea

was rolled out. The methodology needs to be revised and given the backlash involved that could happen. Still, I don't think Tory, other Toronto councillors or opposition members of the Legislature can claim ignorance about Ford's intentions. The premier, who lost the last mayor's election to Tory but had previously served one term as a city councillor, has long railed against the size, cost and inefficiency of government in general and Toronto city council in particular. We will see how all of this unfolds? Personally I have major problems with two aspects of government today. One is the size and cost, which of course go hand in hand. My other complaint centres on "career politicians." Whether they're elected at the municipal, provincial or federal levels some people appear to have settled in for life. They be-

come so firmly ensconced that it seems the only way they will leave is through voluntary retirement or for health reasons. I'm a big believer in limiting politicians' terms in office. As a rule of thumb I would like to see a three term limit imposed at all three levels of government in Canada for any one position. In most cases that gives individuals 12 years in office. If you haven't made a mark in your constituency or your municipality after more than a decade in office you never will. Note that I have said limits should apply to "any one position." If someone is so popular that they move up to become a mayor, a party leader or Prime Minister that's a different matter. Premier Ford's contention about Toronto city council is that it's so large and unwieldy they are not an effective decision-making body. And there's no de-

nying that cutting government numbers and reducing bureaucracy is a potential pathway to fulfilling one of Ford's main campaign promises. He and his party have pledged to make tax cuts and save money wherever possible. I agree that Ford's methods need refinement. But should they achieve it the ultimate goal of saving

money would no doubt earn the Tories another term in office. Jeff Maguire is a career journalist who lives in Carleton Place, Ont. He has been writing for community and daily newspapers in Ontario since 1971. He can be reached by email at: jeffrey.maguire@rogers.com

IMPORTANT SUMMER JOB HELPED FAMILY SURVIVE THE WINTER YOUNG MARY PARTICIPATED IN PRESERVING AND PICKLING TRADITION, COLUMNIST RECALLS MARY COOK Column

The kitchen wore the sweet smell of sugar, vinegar, mustard, and spices, all simmering gently on the second burner of the Findlay Oval. The red and white checked oilcloth on the table had been scrubbed clean, and white porcelain basins of freshly picked beans, onions, and green tomatoes were at the ready. My sister Audrey was at

one end of the table, Mother at the other. In front of each was a chopping board and kitchen knives Father had sharpened to make the job at hand as easy as possible. By the time the day was over, there would be many jars of chili sauce, beans in brine, and green tomato pickles, all ready to take down to the shelves in the cellar to augment our meals over the winter. Still to be 'done down' would be the preserves raspberries, strawberries and chokecherry jam, and anything else Mother could find to add to the swinging shelf under the house. I sat and watched, so very anxious to be part of this very important job ... putting away stores for the winter. Mother could sense that I wanted to help, and so she said I could have the job of

washing the beans. They were already soaking in cold water, and I couldn't for the life of me figure out why they had to washed further. But Mother was high on cleanliness, and there wouldn't be one bean used until it had been thoroughly washed. She said that each one had to be rubbed separately, not simply swished around in the water. And so I began, taking one bean at a time out of the cold water, and pinching it through two fingers and putting it out on the spotlessly clean tea towel waiting for the chopping board. It was Audrey's job to cut off the ends of each bean, and then put as many as she could into the empty jars that had been boiling on the stove, standing them upright. Once each jar had been packed tightly, Mother poured

cold salted water in it, and I knew that when winter came, those very beans would taste like they had just come out of the garden. My three brothers and Father never came near the kitchen when the job of preserving and pickling was going on. Mother had no time for idle chatter, and the brothers knew, if they hung around long enough, they would get the hateful job of carting the bottles down to the cellar. It was that cellar which scared the daylights out of me. You could get into Aunt Bertha's cellar by simply opening a trap door off the kitchen, and going down a ladder. But the only way you could get into our cellar was to go outside and heave open the two huge flat doors slanted against the side of the house. The cellar was

nothing more than a pit dug out of the ground. How I hated to go down those few steps into that space under the house! My hateful brother Emerson said he knew for a fact snakes lived in the cellar, and he also said spiders as big as bullfrogs loved the damp darkness. Every year Father brought fresh sand from the gravel pit and replaced what was down there, and this is where carrots and parsnips were buried, and most amazing to me, they never froze over the long winters. When Mother and Audrey finished, and all the jars were sealed tightly, Mother kept a bowl of chili sauce out for our supper that night. Father loved chili sauce but he didn't eat it like the rest of the family. He poured his into a fruit nappy and dipped thick

slices of buttered fresh bread into it, and ate it that way. He never failed to say, 'By gar, that's good, let me tell ya', and the bowl would be empty by the time supper was over. I would look over at all the sealers ready to be taken down to the cellar, and I would know, and be thankful, that that day's work would help us get through another winter. DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@metroland.com You hear Ernest Liptak before you see him. More so, you hear his fingers strumming. Coming up the driveway of his house - the blue house with the yellow door on Stewart Street you hear his guitar strings, and then you see him, sitting on a stool in the garage, wearing his James Taylor-like fedora. Step into his garage and look around - you may be forgiven for thinking you are in his wood shop. But you're not. There's an inner sanctum, a smaller shop at the back of his garage, that is temperature controlled - it is where he has been building guitars. "I've been wanting to make guitars since I was in my 20s in Toronto," said Liptak, sitting atop another stool, the tools of his trade around him, on July 18. "I've always loved the look of the instrument, and the sound of it and I felt compelled to make it." His guitar workshop was originally part of "just a tumbledown garage when I moved in," with his wife, a holistic nutritionist. He had to insulate the walls and install new windows, and set up an air conditioner, to protect the sensitive wood he works with. "It's enjoyable in winter," he said. "It's so peaceful." He first studied with Philip Davis, originally a violin maker, who taught him the traditional Spanish style of guitar making. He later learned the Americanstyle, which is when "you make the body first and then the neck, then you combine the two." He also spent "a really intensive summer with," Sergei de Jonge's School of Lutherie. "We were there, like, 10 to 12 hour days, breathing in sawdust," said Liptak, learning the craft, including how to install a dovetail joint on a guitar. "It's a very attractive joint. When you do it perfect, it's completely invisible. (And) nobody ever sees it

again!" His time with de Jonge also taught him the art of French polishing, "the only finishing method that I use." (Most factory-produced guitars spray on their finishing liquid, and "it does deaden the sound," he said.) The French method, however, "does not inhibit the vibration of the wood." You can tell you are holding a Liptak guitar by the headpiece, from which he drew inspiration from nature. Visiting a cabin in the Haliburton County, he was sitting on a rock when he picked up a maple leaf off of the ground and beheld its pattern. "It wasn't a conscious thing," he said later, but now, the spiky leaf pattern of the maple leaf adorns the tops of his classical guitars. "Talk about nature being an inspiration!" During our visit, he produced a guitar he is working on for a client in Toronto, made of sequoia redwood, "not often used for guitars," he said. "People would argue that rosewood is the best." One of his prized possessions though is a Selmer-Maccaferri guitar, which he gently placed on the table for display during our visit, looking down upon it for a moment, before taking it out of its case to hold, and point out its unusual, almost oval-looking soundhole. Growing up on the north shore of Lake Erie in southern Ontario, Liptak grew up in a "traditional" Hungarian family. At a Hungarian wedding he attended as a child, "I was just fascinated by the violin," he said. He moved to Toronto as a young man and started a business, but always with the goal in mind that "in the year 2000, I will retire, sell my business, and live in the woods and make guitars." He did indeed move back to the shores of Lake Erie, but, his dream of early retirement was somewhat elusive, and he had to resume making a living. He worked for a time at a native plant nursery doing restoration work, in particular, dealing with

invasive species. Tall grass used to be quite prevalent in southern Ontario, and he was part of a team that restored a 60-acre area to an oak savannah state. He also did volunteer work for the Nature Conservancy of Canada, doing bird count studies. In 2010, he moved to Lanark County, and when asked how many guitars he has produced since then, he shrugs, smiles and says, "I haven't really counted. (It's) not in the hundreds or dozens." He has four guitars in various stages of construction at the moment. He continued that "you don't make a living at this until a famous person plays your guitar," he joked. His old teacher, de Jonge, for example, does not make a living building guitars, per se, so he holds master classes in building them. Others in his position teach guitar lessons, "to supplement their income. All of these guys do other things," he said. But he is adamant that he takes his craft seriously. "I wouldn't want to call this a hobby. That sort of trivializes it. I take it too seriously." He does listen to music while he works, and "my musical tastes seem to vary with the season," from flamenco to the Beatles to opera (Saturday afternoons see his radio dial set to CBC Radio 2 and their opera show). "I just love music," he said. Adding to his eclectic tastes are compositions by the late John Taverner, known for his "stunningly beautiful" religious works, or the "very, very fast plucking of the pipa, a fourstringed traditional Chinese musical instrument. The interview ends in an unusual, though highly appropriately, musical way - with a serenade of the Cuban folksong, Afro-Cuban Lullaby, played as the wind rustled through the trees, and the sun shone through the leaves outside.

will be his first time with a fulltime, September-to-June class to call his own. But having worked in musical theatre and with choirs consistently overly weeks and even months, "I have had experience with longer-term musical settings," he said, adding that he is hoping to bring in a choir to PDCI, either as an extracurricular credit course, or as a "just for fun" club during lunch or after school. New life On Saturday, Aug. 11, Reid will marry his fiancée Anne-Marie at the Glebe Community Centre. Though she is a Franco-Ontarian from Orleans, she met him in Perth, when she was doing a onemonth medical residency at the Great War Memorial Hospital site of the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital, while he was teaching at Calvary Christian Academy. She was living with a family friend during her month in town, and the family threw a dinner party to help her meet some members of the community. The lady of the house made sure to tell Reid's mother, "Oh, make sure you invite Adam." Now that Reid's fiancée is a doctor, his friend Jeff Mills made sure to point out to Reid that "We do need a family doctor here in Perth," dropping a not-so-subtle hint to the new couple, who still live in Ottawa. Perth and District Collegiate Institute (PDCI)'s music program once again has a full-time music teacher, in alumni Adam Reid. "I was really lucky to have the very vibrant arts program that was there then," said Reid during a recent interview on the morning of Thursday, Aug. 2, at a Gore Street coffee shop. About three months ago, he received a phone call from his old PDCI music teacher, Jack Hurd, where he heard that "there is a big push," from the community for the return of a full-time music teacher at the school. In time, the teacher who was holding down the musical fort at the time, Matt Wallace, and principal Kellie Weir-Burtt, reached out to him, as well, about possibly applying for the position of full-time music teacher. "Matt has been doing a lot of work with the after-school for credit," music program, said Reid. "Matt and I are looking at working really closely together. We both really care about the program," and to make it into a "full-time, real-deal program." When he heard about the position, he admitted that it sounded "a little too good to be true," and that, in the past few years, "the program had kinda evaporated." But when he found out that he was to be the new music teacher, "it was almost surreal, as someone who went to PDCI," as a student. "I never really imagined I would be receiving that call from Jack." Early years Born in London, Ont., he moved to Perth at the age of three, "so, as far as I know, and remember, I grew up in Perth." His father worked for 3M and was offered a choice of transfers: Perth or Calgary. Cowtown's loss became Perth's gain. He attended Queen Elizabeth Public School and later the private Brooke Valley School, as well as The Stewart School, where he learned the recorder and trombone under teacher Grace Armstrong. He attended PDCI for high school, and later, he had to choose between science and music. Seeing as he was already spending so much time with his high school band, the choice became pretty clear, pretty quickly. He attended the University of Ottawa where he studied piano

for his bachelor of music, specializing in education. He stayed at U of O for his bachelor of education. Since graduation, it has been "a bit of a slow round, over the last three years, to get here." He joked that he pulled the "classic millennial move," and moved back to his parents' place near Otty Lake. In time, he became the music director for the United Church parishes in Lanark (St. Andrew's) and Balderson. For three months, he also taught music for Grades 5 to 8 at Calvary Christian Academy in Franktown, Beckwith Township. He also put his name on the supply-teaching lists for the Upper Canada District School Board and the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board. "I wanted to stay in the Ottawa Valley," he said, although, for a lot of his friends from teachers college, "a lot of them left the province." In time, he found work at Capital City Keyboards and Music Academy in Nepean. "It turned out to be a great job," he said. He wrapped up his duties at the store earlier this month, but during his time in Ottawa, he worked five days a week at the piano store, one day supply teaching, and one day at church. "I never really made the jump into supply teaching full time," he said. Reid is aware that this

SUDOKU

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

horoscopes ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 It can be challenging to silence your suspicious mind, Aries. Not everyone is trying to pull the wool over your eyes. Avoid gossip whenever possible, and you’ll be fine.

LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 This is a prime time to nurture business relationships that could push your employment career into a new direction, Libra. There are many possibilities at your disposal.

TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 Wear your heart on your sleeve, Taurus. Doing so may endear you to others. It may seem like you’re putting all your cards on the table, but you’re showing you’re genuine.

SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 It can be difficult for your detailed-oriented self to draw the line at what to include in a task and what to leave out. You strive for perfection in all you do, Scorpio.

GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Toning things down is not necessarily your style, Gemini. But this week you may want to keep a few details to yourself. Maintain a low profile for the next few days.

SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 You are wondering if you should play it safe or dance closer to the edge this week, Sagittarius. It may be because you are feeling trapped by routine. Change can be good.

CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, it is very easy to get wrapped up in the problems of others. But sometimes you have to let others work things out on their own. Offer advice if it is sought.

CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, you want to be there for all the people who may need your assistance. But avoid stretching yourself too thin so you can approach each situation energetically.

LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, behind the big lion’s roar beats the heart of a pussy cat. Your sensitive side is bound to come through this week, when you may provide comfort to a person in need.

AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Choose your battles, Aquarius. There are not enough hours in the day to be an activist for every cause. Only select the ones that you truly feel strongly about.

VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 What you show to the public may not be the true Virgo you keep close to yourself. Let a few intimate details sneak out, and you may be surprised at the reactions.

PISCES – Feb 19/Mar 20 Try not to record every moment on social media, Pisces. It’s good to leave an aura of mystery from time to time and enjoy the moments.
