RAIL SIGNAL TESTING CAUSE OF TRAFFIC BACKUPS ON WILSON STREET ON AUG. 7 DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@metroland.com The testing of traffic signals caused traffic chaos on Wilson Street late on Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 7. In an email exchange with The Perth Courier, Mallory McCredie, media relations officer for the Canadian Pacific Railway, wrote later on Aug. 7 that "at approximately 11 a.m. .... the CP Rail crossing at Wilson Street in Perth was being tested, following some routine maintenance that was being done in the area." While the crossing at Drummond Street remained open for

vehicle traffic, southbound traffic on Wilson was backed up to Highway 7, with the only circulation possible thanks to drivers making their own detour routes, like Railway Street onto Drummond. Northbound traffic was also backed up, beyond Isabella Street, past the Metro supermarket, nearly to North Street. "The crossing was put back into service once all safety testing had been confirmed," wrote McCredie. "CP (Rail) thanks local residents for their patience as this work was completed." The work appeared to be wrapped up around 11:30 a.m.

NO BUCK-A-BEER TO FLOW FROM PERTH BREWERY DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@metroland.com

Desmond Devoy/Metroland Red lights could be seen stretching from the railway crossing on Wilson Street south, as far back at Isabella Street and beyond, as police directed traffic at the intersection of Harris/Sunset and Wilson, on Aug. 7. The railway lights were flashing and the barrier was down - despite the fact that no train was crossing, or even approaching, the crossing at one of Perth's busiest streets.

Premier Doug Ford's bucka-beer challenge to Ontario brewers will not be met by the Perth Brewery. "No, we will not (have bucka-beer)," said Jeremy Steeves, co-owner of the Perth Brewery, during a telephone interview on Monday, Aug. 13. "I'd be surprised if anyone does." Last week, the premier challenged Ontario's brewers to lower their prices to a $1 per can minimum by the Labour Day weekend. However, the costs incurred by craft brewers means that the cost of each can "far exceeds a buck." In fact, "if anyone does it, I would like to see how they do this," he said.

"Mr. Ford is trying to market himself to the masses."

(Ford made his announcement at the Barley Days Brewery in Picton last week. According to a government press release, the minimum retail price for beer was a dollar between 2005 and 2008, when a higher minimum price was set, which now sits at $1.25 a can.) Steeves said that breweries like "the big guys," may have the economies of sale to be able to deliver buck-a-beer, but that market is "not our target crowd." As for the premier's motivations, "Mr. Ford is trying to market himself to the masses," and he has been hearing "a lot of chatter," from customers about the proposal. But aside from fulfilling a campaign pledge, "I don't know what his (Ford's) angle is."

PERTH BREWERY CELEBRATES 25TH BIRTHDAY WITH TAY BASIN BASH DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@ metroland.com What 25-year-old wouldn't want to shut down the Tay Basin and invite some cool bands with some cool suds thrown in - for their birthday? The Perth Brewery celebrated its quarter century in style during its Birthday Bash by the Basin on Friday, Aug. 10. But unlike a regular 25-year-old's birthday celebration, the mayor was there to raise a can of Last Duel Lager for a toast. Mayor John Fenik offered congratulations to founder Terry Steeves, his partner Cathy Brown, and Terry's son Jeremy Steeves, for "creating a business that has thrived and put Perth on the map," said Fenik. A proposed expansion at the Perth-based Montessori School, Perth Children's House (PCH) for the lower elementary level is a go. An experienced Montessori-trained teacher has been hired and a location has been secured. The new Grade 1-3 Program, wished for by a committee of local parents whose children currently attend the Casa (primary) program and who submitted a request for the school's expansion earlier in the year, is slated to open in September 2018. Along with returning Montessori children, there will be a limited number of spaces available to those who have not yet had the opportunity to experience the Montessori System. With a maximum student to teacher ratio of 7:1 children are able to work at their own pace in areas that interest them the most while getting individ-

ual and small group instruction and encouragement. On Aug. 14, PCH will be hosting their second public information session for families interested in finding out more about the program. It will be held at St. Paul's United Church in Perth at 6 p.m. To RSVP contact Krista at 613-8125200 or visit www.NewPerthSchool.com. With Kanata being the closest location to offer Montessori at the Elementary level, this style of education has been out of reach to children in this area. The expanded program of Perth Children's House Montessori will now give the (Smiths Falls, Almonte, Westport, Carelton Place, Sharbot Lake) area an opportunity to participate locally in nearby Perth. and we look forward to working with them and the local communities as we move toward September, when we will open our doors," said Krista Hearty McLean, lead of the expan-

sion committee. About the Montessori Method of education Developed by Maria Montessori in 1897, the method is a child-centred educational approach

based on scientific observations of children from birth to adulthood. Montessori's method has been used for over 100 years around the world and has become a go to curriculum as our understanding of human development and learning has improved. The Montessori Method views the child as one who is naturally eager for knowledge and capable of initiating learning in a supportive, thoughtfully prepared learning environment. This nurturing space ignites a child's curiosity and creativity while they develop independence, self-motivation, a love of learning, and the academic skills needed for a complex and changing world. With a limited number of spaces available, the registration deadline is Aug. 18. Contact Krista at 613-812-5200 or visit www.NewPerthSchool.com to register.

EVERYTHING I NEED TO KNOW I LEARNED FROM SNG CAPT. PICARD MAY SAVE US, WRITES STEPHANIE GRAY STEPHANIE GRAY Column

Over the last couple of months, I have been drawn in occasionally by people of various ages playing a word scramble game on their phones. I'm a word girl. Sometimes I help. I typically avoid downloading games onto my phone because history shows I can really get sucked in and, consequently, things don't get done. Like sleeping. Or cleaning up the kitchen. People were playing it on the plane when we went to Arizona, though, so I asked Girlchild about it. (She, of course, rolled her eyes because everyone on the planet already knows it.) Against my better judgment, "Word Cookies" has been down-

loaded. As predicted, the time spent playing Word Cookies when I first got home might have been better spent asleep and recovering from jet lag. It reminds me a bit of when I was a student at Carleton and would procrastinate by playing the only game I had on my gigantic 40-pound laptop: Tetris. Man, I could have avoided a few allnighters if I had just sat down, written the darned essays and taken fewer Tetris breaks. (I'll have to remind myself of this when I cajole my own peeps about homework.) While lying on the couch playing Word Cookies, interspersed with periodic social media checks, I stumbled across the news that Patrick Stewart is going to reprise his role as Capt. Jean-Luc Picard in a new Star Trek series on CBS next fall. Omigod. Suddenly there I was, travelling through a space-time continuum thingy and having a flashback to the early 1990s when my roommates and I were glued to Star Trek: The Next Generation before going to play a few rounds of Tetris in advance of a long

night of essay writing (instead of doing dishes or sleeping). My former roommates and I have already decided we should reconvene at the old apartment to watch the new shows. We figure the people who live there now won't mind as long as we bring wings and zucchini. I'm sure every generation has its pop culture reminders that give them the warm fuzzies. This is one of them for me. Although I didn't love the original series, it reminds me of sleepovers at my Nan's and watching it on TV in the morning. SNG, though, takes me back to my invincible youth when the world was at my doorstep and etc. And it was an intelligent show that explored meaningful topics. I absolutely would follow Capt. Picard anywhere. He is definitely a guy I would want to have around in an emergency. (I think Capt. Picard is largely responsible for my innate trust in bald men who have leadership roles. I bet surveys have been done on this. I'm sure papers have been written.) Anyway, as strange as it may sound, the news about Capt. Picard

was the best thing I have seen on the Interwebs in months. (While I was away, one quick glance at the headlines rolling along on the Twitter made me want to barf and kept me off of it for days.) The planet is just a bit nutty right now. It's disheartening. And it's a bit ironic, I suppose, that the Capt. Picard announcement comes at around the same time as the "Space Force" announcement in the Excited States of America. I just ... I just ... I have no words. Anyway, forgive me if I fall into a little fantasy about how Capt. Picard will save us all (starting in fall 2019) with words of wisdom about things like tolerance and open-mindedness and conservation and kindness and such. I'll just play Word Cookies while I wait. Make it so. Stephanie Gray is a word girl, project manager and college teacher who makes up words, has petulant body parts and obsesses about her patio. sjgray@bell.net. EXPECTATIONS AND ICE CREAM ICE CREAM DESPERATION AND MUNICIPAL ELECTION TIME, ARE ON THE MENU FOR CATHY JAMES

insideottawavalley.com

CATHY JAMES Column

When you tell young kids that you're going to go out for ice cream, expectations get high. Really high. So when my friend and I took our combined four kids out for a last-minute patio dinner last week, we told them we'd walk through Stewart Park and head to Peter's Restaurant for ice cream as a dessert. Everyone was thrilled. As the kids galloped toward the ice cream shop, they were discussing which flavour of ice cream they'd pick. I remarked to them: but only if they have that kind! (While whispering to my friend that we have to limit expectations - just in case.)

Well, our expectations were hurled to the side pretty quickly. Peter's was closed. It seemed odd as it was 15 minutes before closing time, but I'm sure they had their reason. The kids were sad, and we didn't know how to navigate through this one. With that, one of them employees must have sensed our disappointment (sic: desperation) from inside, and she unlocked and opened the ice cream shop window. She asked her colleague if she'd be willing to do one last order. Cue the kids' sad eyes looking up. Sure enough, she said yes and put together six orders for some happy kids (and even happier parents). Thanks to them for making our kids' night and helping out

While the same can obviously be said for all levels of politics, I think the municipal level plays such a huge role in our community's lifestyle. two moms who had some high expectations!

Get set for the municipal election I know, I know. It's still summer. But as we wind down from the Best Summer Ever, candidates are gearing up for campaign time as they lead up to the Oct. 22 municipal election. I love municipal politics. Really, I do. Here's why: their decisions

directly impact your everyday life. Whether it's paying your tax bill, playing hockey at the arena or supporting local initiatives, these conversations and decisions are made around the council horseshoe. And while one councillor may have a strong opinion on a topic, it takes majority to move forward. Their setup encourages debate but also requires collaboration, good listening and openness to ideas. While the same can obviously be said for all levels of politics, I think the municipal level plays such a huge role in our community's lifestyle. With that, make sure you research the candidates running, attend an all-candidates' debate and vote! Do you have a Private I idea for Cathy? She'd love to hear from you! DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@metroland.com The next generation of scientists got a kick-starter lesson in the fundamentals during their summer break, with the help of some real scientists. Just as Albert Einstein's mind was twigged to the idea of the theory of relativity after riding on a streetcar in Bern, Switzerland, or as mouldy bread led Frederick Banting and Charles Best to discover insulin, so too, may a simple science demonstration have kicked off a scientific life or two this week. Chau Nguyen, a biomedical science student at the University of Ottawa, and Shah Bukhari, a biology student from Carleton University, held two Let's Talk Science, presentations at the Perth and District Union Public Library on Wednesday, Aug. 8, covering fundamentals of science such as liquid, gas and solid. Youngsters also got to hear about the cool experiments the two are working on back at school in Ottawa. Nguyen is researching the na-

ked mole rat, which "can live in (a) very low oxygen environment," and he is hoping to discover how it can do that. Bukhari is studying butterflies at his lab, and said, "I get to see them from all over the world." Bukhari explained to the children, aged five to eight, that "density" means that there is "more stuff in the same space," so it "tends to be heavier." A solid also

has a shape, whereas "gasses, like liquids, take the shape of the container they are in," he said. After experiments mixing water and sugar, and water, oil and corn syrup, (with oil sitting on top of the water, and the water sitting on top of the corn syrup) then adding Alka-Seltzer to water to watch it fizz, and creating a lava lamp, Nguyen exclaimed, "You guys are going to be scientists one day!"

BARNS, FARMS AND WICKED CHEFS ON TAP SATURDAY from All Saints Event Space and Matthew Brearley of Castlegarth Farm. The Table is also thrilled to be welcoming fellow good food advocates and chefs Simon Bell from the Parkdale Food Centre, and Anna March and Carley Schelck of Cultivating Cooks. The Table's own Judy Dempsey and a delicious seasonal dessert offered by Kassy Boulay of the Perth Pie Co. round out the roster. A lively and fun part of the event is the auction with many items working with the event's local and food themes. This year's featured items include a top-of-the-line Twin Eagles outdoor gas grill, dinners for eight by the Table and Picnic Café, a Jotul wood stove and a custom art commission by fibre artist Bridget O'Flaherty. The event is loved by guests and chefs alike. Chef Anna March, who is returning for a second year, had this to say about her experience at Barns, Farms and Wicked Chefs: "It was an absolute pleasure to take part in such a beautiful event. Every detail was considered and the night was nothing short of magical. As a chef you get asked to participate in a lot of public events, but none are closer to our core values than Barns, Farms and Wicked Chefs. We have been looking forward to this since

wrapping up last year's event with a glass of wine, a slice of pie and a sunset - surrounded by friends with the common goal of making great food accessible for everyone." Tickets for the event are $125 the price includes on-site parking, as many visits to the chef's stations as you like, non-alcoholic beverages and an $80 charitable donation receipt. The event is held at EcoTay, 942 Upper Scotch Line located 15 minutes from downtown Perth. All proceeds from the event go to supporting the Table's innovative food and community engagement programs like their community meals which provide healthy, from scratch meals in a warm and social atmosphere. Serving over 10,000 meals a year, this program has helped hundreds of community members improve their physical and mental health. The Table is grateful to lead sponsors OMYA Canada, and Jim Noble Wealth Management for their generous support. To join in the good food and good times, tickets can be purchased online at www.thetablecfc.org where you will also find abundant information about the Table. You can also order tickets by phone at 613-267-6428 ext. 7 or at the Table at 190 Gore St. E. in Perth.

David Zimmerly photo On Saturday, Aug. 18, chefs from across the region will be showcasing their creative skills and offering a true taste of the season's bounty at the sixth annual Barns, Farms, and Wicked Chefs fundraiser.

R0013021901

It might be hard to think of combining a charity gala with a down-home style barn party but that's exactly what the Table Community Food Centre does with its annual fundraiser Barns, Farms and Wicked Chefs. The popular event will happen on Aug. 18 in Perth and features delicious food prepared by an amazing group of guest chefs using the best from the area's farms. The event also features local breweries Perth Brewery and Weatherhead Brew Co., as well as craft spirits from Top Shelf, regional wines, kombucha and even locally roasted coffee. The food and drinks are top notch and the setting is elegant but this is no stuffy affair - it all happens at a spruced up heritage farmstead, surrounded by hay fields, forest and meadows. The atmosphere is casual with people mingling and moving about the site between the chefs' stations, the bars, and the indoor and outdoor seating areas. Musicians add to the ambience and have been known to end the night with a lively jam session. Food lovers will recognize the chefs and their home restaurants as some of the best in the Ottawa area including Marc Doiron from Town and Citizen, Jon Kroetsch from Fraser Café, Dominic Paul of Thyme and Again, Kyle Mortimer-Proulx

The Perth Minor Royals qualified to play in the Ontario Minor Provincial Championship tournament in Windsor Ontario beginning July 28. The team represented District 8 of Ontario Little League, including Smiths Falls, Renfrew, Pembroke, Mississippi, Madawaska and Perth. The team was chosen on June 15 by coaches Mike Bell, Russ Borrowman, Adam Neadow and Craig White - some of whom are former Royals themselves. The coaching staff felt that they had a very strong and ambitious team that would be a shining example of hard work and dedication for the sport and the community. Prior to travelling to

Special thanks is extended to: Norwood & Co., Barnabe's Independent Grocer, Metro, Canadian Tire, Giant Tiger, The JDN Center for Children, Central Wire, OMYA, Elite Engraving & Embroidery, Images Perth, and Corrective Justice Legal Service. With their generous support, the players were able to enjoy team breakfasts, lunches and dinners, and each player received a gas card to help with travel. This support allowed the focus of the weekend to be about playing ball. The tournament was a seven-team double-elimination format. The Royals' first game was a loss to the Kingston Colts on Saturday, and their second game was a loss to the Orleans

Submitted/Gaelle Giraudeau It might seem to many of us that it's just too hot to be hiking right now. Not so for the hardy hikers of the Rideau Trail Association (RTA). The RTA has organized a series of hikes this year which are taking our walkers all the way along the 328 km Rideau Trail from Kingston to Ottawa. On Aug. 4, the team arrived in Perth, which is one of the brightest jewels on the Rideau Trail. The trail passes right beside Town Hall, where a large sign celebrates this trail, which was created back in 1971. Why not come out and join the group as they continue north to Ottawa over the next couple of months? For information and contact numbers, see www.rideautrail.org

If you have ever struck a tuning fork and held it to a bowl of water, you will recall that the vibrations create a little splash. If so many vibrations come from one tuning fork you can imagine the extent of the vibrations that come from a complete set of English handbells, and the splash they would create. If you are curious about the effect, you will receive some answers Saturday, Sept. 29 at 10 a.m., at the Crystal Palace Tay Basin. The St. Paul's Hand Bell Choir, under the direction of Ann MacMahon, will be returning by popular demand to delight and entertain patrons of the ever-popular Perth Farmers' Market.

The presentation will feature a mixture of old favourites and new selections such as Louis Armstrong's What a Wonderful World, Burt Bacharach's Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head, Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah, Glenn Miller's Moonlight Serenade and Gershwin favourites. The addition of a complete set of hand chimes creates an almost orchestral sound. If you have never heard handbells, this is your opportunity as 12 dedicated musicians transport your mind and spirit with each selection. The event is held rain or shine, but a little Scottish mist should not deter the faint of heart as the show will be held inside the Crystal Palace.

Please keep our community clean!

OPINION

MEDIA OVER COVERAGE OF TRAGEDIES TROUBLING IN THE RUSH TO BE FIRST, ACCURACY SOMETIMES TAKES A BEATING, JEFF MAGUIRE WRITES JEFF MAGUIRE Column

As a junior reporter, fresh out of journalism school, I'm sure I would never have considered writing a column like this. But after 47 years in the business and a lifetime following the news (my late father founded the Stittsville community newspaper) I have a very different view of how the media

should govern itself. I'm concerned about what I feel is a lack of balance demonstrated by some in the media, especially when it comes to covering the many tragedies which are all too common in the 21st century. The incredible reach and total saturation which spins from the worldwide web means news today - especially bad news - travels fast. In journalism school we were taught to do a fair, objective, balanced and truthful job ("accurate" is a related word) of covering the news. For much of my long career in the newspaper business I felt that most journalists had those goals in mind. I would like to think the majority of news professionals still honour these objectives.

Unfortunately in our modern society much of the instant news available via social media and the Internet in general are posted by individuals with no news background. They are private citizens whose goal is to get the information out immediately. There is little if any thought given to how accurate their postings are or about the potential damage they can cause if the material in question is inaccurate or false. Ask witnesses to any news event what they saw and you are bound to get multiple, often very different, viewpoints. Therefore, the initial information reported is usually quite different from the news released by the authorities who investigate such oc-

currences. That is the weakness inherent to instant news! As for the mainstream media today I'm troubled by what I feel is the overkill related to major news stories. When a shooting, explosion, plane crash or other major, negative occurrence comes to light the all-news stations and online news sources turn their coverage completely to that particular incident. Sadly, in the rush to be first, accuracy and truth sometimes take a beating. Two recent tragedies in Toronto are examples of this troubling trend. The van attack in April and the mass shooting in the city's Greektown neighbourhood last month. I am concerned about

the depth and the duration of the coverage given to those terrible events and others around the world today. In Toronto some news outlets set everything else aside and focused exclusively on the tragedies I have just mentioned. The "saturation coverage" continued for much of the following next week. In fairness the same kind of news approach is all too common in the wake of virtually every major event that happens today. There doesn't seem to be a "happy medium" anymore when it comes to the news. In fact I think the boundaries of good taste and common sense are being severely tested when it comes to media coverage in general today.

It is somewhat alarming to see and hear the length and breadth of the media exposure given to the tragedies which are visiting us far too often these days. I would like to see some balance applied when it comes to news gathering in general, but especially relative to publicizing the senseless murders of our fellow human beings. At this point in time I believe things are askew in this regard! Jeff Maguire is a career journalist who lives in Carleton Place, Ont. He has been writing for community and daily newspapers in Ontario since 1971. He can be reached by email at: jeffrey.maguire@rogers.com.

Lots of upcoming events, so be sure to mark your calendars and come out to support the Lanark Animal Welfare Society. On Friday, Aug. 17 starting at 7 p.m. in Perth at Top Shelf Distillers (14 Warren Cres.), there's a parking lot party. There is going to be good food, fancy drinks and great music. As you dance the night away, hopefully under starry skies, staff of Top Shelf Distillers will be collecting money as well as supplies for LAWS. At this time canned cat and kitten food (Friskies preferred) as well as bottles of bleach is most needed.

Car wash and barbecue

Looking to get your car washed before the end of summer? This is the time Smiths Falls Ford will be hosting a car wash and barbecue in support of LAWS on Saturday, Aug. 25. Check in to our Facebook page for more details!

Adoption weekend Please mark your calendars for another scheduled adoption weekend in Perth at Pet Valu on Aug. 24-26. A LAWS representative will be available with adoptable kittens and cats during

these days from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. More details on our Facebook pages as to who is coming closer to these dates. This week's featured pets • Velvet and Paws Please meet Velvet and Paws, two four-year-old sisters who had to be surrendered to LAWS for unforeseen family reasons. They've lived with other cats and love to be around children. They're both very friendly. Velvet is a little more outgoing then Paws, but we're sure once they're in their true forever home, they will both spoil you

with their love and affection. They're both declawed on their front little paws and have to be adopted together. They are available for adoption in Carleton Place at Natural Pet Foods on Bridge Street. • Pete Hi, I am Pete, and my personality type is action! You won't find me sitting on the sidelines; I am always in for play and cuddle time. My previous family had no time for me and because of that I was surrendered to LAWS. If you've got a lot of love and attention to give, and you're looking for a cat with loads of personal-

ity, I just might be the perfect match for you! • Al Al is a special two-year-old boy with extra toes on his front feet (polydactyl) and a long body with lovely markings. Deep buried in his genes he might have some Bengal in him. Al is ready for playtime and loves cuddles, but prefers to have all four paws on the ground. He would love to go to a quiet family. PARKINSON'S SUPER WALK AT CONLON FARM IN PERTH SEPT. 8 Saturday, Sept. 8 is the date for the second annual Parkinson SuperWalk Lanark North Leeds which again will be held at Conlon Farm, 109 Smith Drive in Perth starting at 10 a.m. The event will be held rain or shine with music, food, demos and information about Parkinson's. Patricia Boal, CTV Ottawa News anchor will MC and mayors John Fenik of Perth and Shawn Pankow of Smiths Falls will be there to lend their support. The relaxed two-kilmometre walk around the park and adjacent neighbourhood however is not the most important goal of the walk. "The day marks an opportunity for people with Parkinson's disease to come together for a common purpose; to raise funds and awareness while having fun at the same time," says co-chair of the walk, Gayle Truman. Last September, the notable success of the first local SuperWalk (over $31,000 was raised), underlined the need for increased services in Lanark North

Leeds. Since last year's walk, a support group and two new exercise programs have opened in Smiths Falls. An educational event was organized through the Ontario Telemedicine Network as part of Parkinson's Awareness Month last April bringing the expertise of a leading researcher and neurologist and neurophysiotherapists to Lanark North Leeds and information sessions have been organized with local health care providers. Parkinson's is the second most common neurological disease with over 100,000 people living with it in Canada. It is a chronic and progressive disease, meaning that symptoms continue and worsen over time. These range from loss of smell and muscle rigidity to tremor and depression. The obvious symptoms are usually the tip of the iceberg, with many others not apparent to most people. The average age of diagnosis is 62 with 30 per cent diagnosed before the age of 50. By 2031, it is predicted that the number will double and Lanark

Lee-Ann Legault

Leeds and Grenville, with the highest percentage of seniors in Ontario and already underserviced, will face a particular challenge. "While there is no cure for this chronic and progressive neurological disorder, early identification and diagnosis of Parkinson's disease is important so that people can educate themselves about what they can do to help delay the disease," says Pat Evans, local advocate and a person with Parkinson's. "People seem to be diagnosed much later here than they would be in an urban area. The reasons for this are not clear but access to specialists may be one factor. There may also be increased isolation because of distance and worries about being judged or stigmatized may prevent people from talking with their doctor." To register as an individual or team, to donate or to get further information contact Alan Muir at 1 (800) 565-3000 ext. 3427 or visit online at donate.parkinson.ca/lanarknorthleeds

A walk in Stewart Park versus a walk across Wilson Street. The former is peaceful, the latter can be scary. At Perth town council's committee of the whole meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 7, citizen Greg Anderson brought his concerns about two parts of town that could not be more different, but are less than 100 metres away from each other. The pathway in Stewart Park, he said, "still doesn't work ... Bridal parties with their high heels cannot walk on the gravel," which Anderson says is "the jewel of Perth." He advised that an advisory

panel should be struck to bring the park to a more fulsome realization, and, pointing to several friends in the public gallery behind him, said that "all of Lewis Street is mobilized," and that "half of them are here tonight." Coun. Jim Boldt said that the condition of the path, which seemed to be Anderson's main concern for the parkway, was a real one, and that he too would like to see the planting of more trees in the park. However, "the biggest hurdle is the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority (RVCA), as far as the path is concerned," he said. Coun. Judy Brown, who is Perth town council's representative on the RVCA board, said that "we are limited as to what we can do there," but promised that she would email the RVCA's management this week to raise concerns. "There are alternatives to asphalt," said Anderson. "It's odd the things they are concerned about," said Brown about the

2018 PRICEDEX SUMMER THEATRE SERIES

RVCA, such as their refusal to allow The Table Community Food Centre to expand on the success of its community garden in Last Duel Park and set up a second such garden in Stewart Park. "Citizen engagement is important," said Mayor John Fenik of Anderson's proposal. "If people are feeling strongly ... I would support it if there are a group of citizens who would like to come forward." Coun. Riq Turner said that he wanted to see the geographic scope of the proposed committee expanded. "I think we should include Last Duel Park too," he said, which he said was "crying out" for some direction. After his rock band played on the stage at the park during the annual ribfest, Turner said he saw for himself that the park "is a gem and it is not well served." Fenik said he wanted to see a report from community services director Shannon Baillon on the proposed committee. Crosswalks Anderson began his remarks however on a far less peaceful subject - the hairy situation that faces pedestrians at the busy intersection where Wilson Street meets Peter and Foster streets. "A truck

brushed by me," he said of his near-miss. "That corner needs some expert work," he said, though he did commend the paint job that was done to the markings in the area. "After Wilson Street was rebuilt, they repainted the lines and that helped a lot," he said. But the paintwork was "not enough," he said, urging that a "yield to pedestrians," sign might be necessary since "these cars think they have the right of way." Anderson joked that a hotdog vendor nearby could set up a camera at his location and become "a very highly paid witness to some hotshot lawyer," for personal injury lawsuits. Coun. Jim Graff admitted that he had been on the other side of the equation at that intersection as a driver. "I'm guilty of exactly what you experienced," said Graff, telling of a time he was turning from Foster Street onto Wilson. "I waited for the green light. What I didn't see was the cross walk (light)." That intersection "is recognized as a very bad intersection ... I almost hit somebody. I apologized." And the person he nearly hit? "He said, 'You should! (apologize). I scared the daylights out of him."

WHERE HAVE ALL THE FLOWERS GONE? PERTH COUNCIL CONDEMNS FLOWER VANDALISM EXHAUST NOISES, FUMES ALSO A CAUSE FOR CONCERN DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@metroland.com Perth town council is condemning recent vandalism done to flowers and flower pots downtown. Coun. Judy Brown, council's representative on the Downtown Heritage Perth BIA (Business Improvement Area) board, reported to Perth town council's committee of the whole meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 7, that there had been a recent rash of vandalism, with flowers being thrown into the Tay, and flower pots knocked over. This is a concern for her and the BIA since the body spends about $20,000 a year on flowers to brighten up the core. Brown said that several Facebook messages of concern had been posted, and that there were suggestions that the OPP have more of a patrol presence downtown. While not dismissing the positive impact a police presence can have, "I don't think a police presence is enough. You can't patrol downtown enough," said Brown.

Another hindrance to the blooming flowers is exhaust from trucks and other vehicles on Gore Street. "This is a big problem," said Brown. "It's the noise." She said she wanted to see an increase in ticketing of overly loud exhausts since "altered exhaust systems (are) illegal," she said. Fenik asked that the exhaust issue be referred to the Perth police services board (PSB) meeting on Thursday, Aug. 23. The chair of the PSB, Coun. Jim Graff, said that "the police do not have the resources to park downtown and wait for them," he said of either vandals or drivers flouting exhaust laws. As for the vandalism, "I don't understand it," said Fenik. He did suggest that environmental design could help curb the problem somewhat. There used to be a problem with benches in Stewart Park being heaved into the Tay. But after those benches were bolted to the ground, that is no longer an issue. While it was a "quick fix," Fenik said, "if someone is intent on doing damage, they can still rip up flowers." "You're never going to fix stupid," said Coun. Jim Boldt. As for the exhaust issue, the

At this, Fenik smiled, turned to Boldt and said "I ride a motorcycle. I love the sound of a Harley ... but I can't afford it!" He prom-

ised that, one day, he would "take you (Boldt) for a ride." On a more serious matter, Fenik pointed out that "Perth is becoming a stop for motorcycle runs," and that the town needed to "support tourism."

WHAT'S HAPPENING ON 182 GORE ST. E.? DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@metroland.com So, what's going on at 182 Gore St. E.? Last week, Aug. 1, traffic was down to one lane headed north as construction crews not only worked on the new developments there, but also got caught up on some work on the road itself. Here's how we got there to this flurry of activity on the south side of town: • There was a house fire at that address about a year ago. • The house has since been removed. • Three residential units are being put up in its place, beside Farrell Hall. • The new units were approved via a zoning amendment this past February. • Site plan approval was given by the planning advisory committee this past April.

Desmond Devoy/Metroland As construction work continues on 182 Gore St. E. in Perth on the afternoon of Tuesday, July 31, beside Farrell Hall, traffic was diverted around work being done on the northbound lane of the street.

REV. SHIRLEY ABRAHAMSE ENCOURAGES YOU TO FIND GOD IN YOUR LIFE SHIRLEY ABRAHAMSE Column

As I write this I have been remembering my dad, who would have turned 95 years old today. It is almost too hard to comprehend that for me, that would be 30-plus years in the future. I remember when he was my age and they, Mom and Dad, were getting ready to move to Canada for the rest of their lives. Mom was coming home; Dad was leaving his home. They left all three of their children behind and their two grandchildren, to venture out on a new start.

It gives me new appreciation for their dedication to God and His provision. In Hebrews 13:5 God has said, "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you." Those words say something to me about a God who is always present with me. So whether I am having a good day or a bad day, He is with me. When I feel sick and alone, He is with me. When those around me make me feel useless, He is with me. He will never leave me nor forsake me. In our world where loneliness is such a growing experience, He is with me. If we can understand that message of God's presence with us, we need never feel alone in any circumstance. I believe Mom and Dad experienced His presence when they left South Africa and arrived in Canada. He sustained them when Mom was diagnosed with cancer, when they worked together on their retirement home, when their only son died and when they

Please keep our community clean!

eventually moved to Ontario to be closer to me. I believe those words written so many years ago are as important for us today as it was to those who first heard them. God will

never leave us; He will never forsake us. We can always be in His presence and allow Him to guide us wherever we may go. May you experience God today

in your life. Rev. Shirley Abrahamse is the chaplain at Lanark Lodge. She can be reached at SAbrahamse@lanarkcounty.ca.

OPINION

MOTHER FOUGHT LOSING BATTLE WITH COMMON HOUSEFLIES ENTIRE FAMILY WORKED EACH SUMMER TO KEEP THEM OUT, MARY COOK RECALLS MARY COOK Column

Mother had more than one way to fight the common housefly, which she hated with a passion. She was convinced before coming into the house, they had collected enough germs from the barns to send us all to our sick beds. So when they managed to get into the kitchen, they were short-lived, let me tell you! Her favourite procedure to kill them off was the spray can of Fly-Tox which she got from Scott's Hardware in Renfrew. When she used this powerful spray

method, the kitchen was closed up for the better part of the day, as Mother attached the invaders with such force, that for hours after, you could smell the strong Fly-Tox all the way to the ice house, and the fumes hung from the ceiling like gossamer clouds. Father said it was more deadly than the housefly, even those that came first from the barns. She absolutely refused to use those hanging sticky coils that attached to the ceiling, since, after letting Father talk her into them, a fly fell off and landed in the butter dish, which, of course, had to be thrown out - butter and all! Just about every farmhouse in Northcote used the hanging coils. Even those farm wives who were immaculately clean, which Mother could never understand. If we were invited to tea and cookies on a summer day to a house where the coils were used, Mother never took her eyes off

them, waiting for a fly to fall onto the kitchen table, which would immediately cause her to say we had to rush off to do some urgent chore at home. She even had Father make homemade swatters for we five kids. Square pieces of fine wire mesh were tacked to a thin strip of lath, and we each had our own, with orders to keep it close at hand, so that we could swat any fly that came within a foot of us. Of course, we were never allowed to kill a fly that was anywhere near the kitchen table! We had to shoo it away, and, hopefully, it would land on the back of a chair or a windowsill where its splattered body was well away from where we would be eating. Then we had to take wet rag and scour the spot afterwards. On hot days, it wasn't unusual for us to have our noon meal out in the grape arbour, where a long table,

covered with oilcloth was always at the ready. Of course, it was thoroughly scoured before we took our food out, and then two of us kids were given the job of standing each at an end of the table with a flour bag tea towel. We had to keep it swishing over the table to scare off any fly that was trying to join us at dinner. So the two swishers, given this job, couldn't eat until everyone else was finished. Father would just shake his head. Going in and out of the house was another challenge for each of us. We had to first stand at the screen door, and even if there wasn't a fly in sight, we had to rattle the door a few times before opening it, and swish our arms over our heads and around our bodies and scare off any fly waiting to get inside. Mother's ongoing battle with the common housefly was never quite won. Father said her time and en-

ergy would be better spent fighting a war she could win. He said, as long as he lived on the farm (born there, he would remind her), nobody ever won the war over the summer invasion of the flies. That didn't stop Mother from trying. Little did she know that my sister Audrey and I would grow up and take with us, too, our hatred of the dreaded housefly. Never forgetting Mother's constant battle that went on in our kitchen out there in Renfrew County every summer so many

years ago. Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books? With the passing of Donna Lorraine Searle (nee Patterson) in her 85th year, we pause to celebrate a life well lived. Donna enjoyed several successful careers as an educator, a farmer and an office administrator. Donna, the only child of Dr. Walter Henry Patterson and Evelyn Carr Patterson of Holland, Manitoba, was born on August 17, 1934. After earning a B.A. at the University of Winnipeg, Donna enthusiastically pursued a career in Christian Education with the United Church of Canada in a variety of communities in Manitoba and Ontario. Her next calling was farming near Clayton, Ontario. Not only was Donna adept at showing prize winning cattle in the ring but also kept busy showing her best in class Boston Terriers at major competitions in Ontario and the United States. When Donna retired from farming, she began a career in office administration. Her dedication and organizational excellence provided a valuable contribution to the work of Almonte cabinetmaker John Brathwaite and area lawyers, Mike Ross, Allan Jones and Brooke McNabb. Donna lived a long and happy life thanks to the support of her wonderful husband Stan and her family, friends and neighbours. In recent years, she treasured the caring professionalism of a wonderful human being, Dr. Roger Drake, and the loving care of the staff at Stoneridge Manor nursing home in Carleton Place, Ontario. MICHAEL JOHN SOLOWJEW August 19, 2016 You never said I’m leaving, You never said goodbye. You were gone before I knew it, And only God knows why. A million times I needed you A million times I cried. If love alone could have saved you, You never would have died. In life I loved you dearly In death I love you still, In my heart you hold a place, That no one could ever fill. It broke my heart to lose you, But you didn’t go alone. For part of me went with you, The day God called you home. Love, Wife Debbie and family

DEATH NOTICE

Ed Sonnenburg April 6, 1948 - August 19, 2014 4 years have passed since we lost a loving husband, dad and grandpa. God saw him getting tired, And a cure was not to be, So He put His arms around him. And whispered “Come To Me”. With tearful eyes, we watched him suffer, And saw him slowly fade away, Although we loved him dearly, We could not make him stay. A golden heart stopped beating, Hard working hands put to rest, God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best. Love always Ev, Carrie, Laura and family

For many years, a group of over 80 volunteers has been learning and working to restore the abandoned cemeteries in Rideau Lakes Township. This restoration has provided an opportunity for the volunteers to establish information from buried and broken stones as well as those standing. Although, information for everyone in those cemeteries is not always available because of stones that have disappeared or persons buried without an engraved stone. Lists are being compiled of the location of the unmarked graves as discovered by groundpenetrating radar and sonar and because of location in the cemetery or other information, names are possible to add to these sites. In 1991, the Ontario government passed legislation stating abandoned cemeteries in any municipality that were not maintained by the property owner on that land that the abandoned

cemetery located would become the property of the municipality. The municipality would be responsible for the maintenance of the abandoned cemetery. However, the grave stones in each cemetery were purchased by the family that erected them and are owned by the descendants of that family. That meant that the care, cleaning and restoration of the stones fell to the volunteers. When the Township of Rideau Lakes passed legislation to deal with abandoned cemeteries, they created a volunteer committee

that was to provide for an ongoing restoration program. This committee has provided restoration to over a dozen abandoned cemeteries and produced a large quantity of genealogical information along the way. The genealogical information at these cemeteries is being made available to interested families as well as detailing the restoration progress made to date. On Saturday, Aug. 18, an open house is being held from 1-4 p.m. Visitors may discuss ongoing restoration of their family's site and become a part of the future pro-

GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, words flow effortlessly from your lips this week, and others are captivated by your tales. You can use this power and creative streak to your advantage.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, make a concerted effort to keep lines of communication open in the days ahead. This can benefit you and your loved ones in some surprising ways.

CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, you may have been a little preoccupied of late. Focus on what has been on your mind and how it is affecting your relationships, making changes where necessary.

AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, nearly everything you do this week will be connected to your career. Strategic moves come easily to you, and certain pieces may fall into place just when you need them to.

VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 There is fun to be had in the days ahead, Virgo. Embrace any opportunity to have some fun, rewarding yourself for all your recent hard work.

PISCES – Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, there is a time to share your dreams, and this week may be the perfect time to do just that. Open up to your closest loved ones.
