MAN'S BODY RECOVERED FROM LAKE Police recovered the body of a missing Westport man from Sand Lake on Monday, Nov. 26. Officers of the Rideau Lakes OPP detachment began searching for Scott McPherson, 33, on Nov. 24 when he was reported missing while snowmobiling in the area. The OPP's emergency response team (ERT), the OPP snowmobile ATV vessel enforcement team (SAVE), Rideau Lakes Fire Service with ATV support, and OPP unmanned aerial support (UAS) participated in the search. The OPP urges everyone to stay off the ice, whether snowmobiling or on foot. No ice is "safe ice." Underlying water currents or air pockets can create thin ice, even in the coldest temperatures. Snowmobilers can't see this until it's too late. If it can't be avoided, check ice conditions beforehand, wear a floater suit, carry ice picks and make sure they are accessible. Always be prepared and travel with safety equipment in the event of an emergency.

ALL ABOUT SNOW:
It may be early, but now that snow is upon is, residents and drivers need to keep a few things in mind. Overnight Parking Restrictions: The Town of Perth enforces overnight parking restrictions to ensure the most efficient snow removal by Environmental Services staff. Winter parking restriction signs are posted at all entrances to the Town. Parking lot permits may be purchased at Town Hall. Cars left on roadways (or in municipal parking lots) without a permit, during overnight hours, will be ticketed and towed in accordance with the Bylaw. The Law: Bylaw #3961 (as amended) states that “no person shall park a vehicle between 0001 hours (12:01am) and 0600 hours (6:00am) during the period from November 20 to March 31 inclusive upon any highway or boulevard under the jurisdiction of the Town of Perth” and further states that “no person shall park a vehicle between the hours of 0001 hours (12:01am) and 0600 hours (6:00am) in any public parking lot except for vehicles parked in designated areas displaying valid parking permits as described in Part IV(3).”
Snow Removal: Please be mindful of where you are depositing snow. Do not bury fire hydrants or push snow out onto the street. Immediate access is needed to the hydrants if a fire was to occur. Fire engines have about 5 minutes of water on-board. That’s 5 minutes to locate your hydrant in a snowdrift, dig it out and hook up supply hoses before the truck runs out of water. Imagine this all happening while your house is burning down. Help us to help you by keeping your fire hydrant clear, and making sure your snow removal contractor knows the rules as well. The Law: Ontario Fire Code Section 6.6.4.2. says “Hydrants shall be kept free of snow and ice accumulations.”
Similarly, pushing your driveway snow out onto the road, the existing snow bank (from plowing the road) or onto your neighbour’s property isn’t acceptable either. That might mean having to push it all into your front or back yard, or only one direction off your driveway, if the configuration dictates. Basically, what snow falls on your property has to stay on your property, unless you hire a contractor to take it away. If by chance you do have an issue with your neighbour’s snow removal practices, please speak to them directly first. Neighbour-to-neighbour communication is always best. The Law: The Highway Traffic Act, R.S.O 1990, c.H.8, Section 181 says: “No person shall deposit snow or ice on a roadway without permission in writing to do so from the Ministry or the road authority responsible for the maintenance of the road.”
Sidewalks and Roofs: During this time of year, it is important to note that the Town of Perth has regulations regarding snow and ice removal from sidewalks and roofs. These bylaws are in place to ensure the safety of all pedestrians in our community.

Town of Perth Property Maintenance and Occupancy Bylaw #3322 requires building owners and/or occupants to safely remove any ice and snow build-up from roofs. This is particularly important in the downtown area. When this hazard cannot be immediately removed, pedestrians must be alerted of the potential overhead danger. In addition, the Ontario Fire Code requires that fire escapes and fire access routes must be kept clear of ice and snow to allow for safe passage for building occupants and emergency personnel. The Town of Perth owns a limited number of red barricades which are available at the Crystal Palace in the Tay Basin. These are to be used as a temporary solution only – until such time as the ice and snow is safely brought down. Once this has been done, these barricades are to be returned to the Crystal Palace. A former Perth resident is hoping to set up a tiny homes commune. Jordan Naomi Chambers, who now lives in Almonte, is working on a business plan to buy up some land where tiny homes and even old shipping containers, converted into residences, could be set up for people dealing with environmental sensitivities. The community would also be a place for residents to learn life skills, and even grown food, some of which could be donated to area food banks, a "people feeding people farm," she explained during an interview at the North Market Café in Almonte on Tuesday, Nov. 20. "You get the time to recoup in an (environmentally) clean home." She is looking at land in either Lanark Highlands Township or Mississippi Mills to set up this community, and she sees it as a chance to compliment institutions like homeless shelters. "We do need shelters, in the short term," she stressed. But for a lot of the people she is looking to help, getting them back to the land would help them heal from their environmental illnesses, which would most likely then lead to better mental and physical health outcomes. As an ex-contractor herself, "I can tell certain things about houses," such as what works, and what does not. She would like to see the laws around where tiny homes can be placed, because she admittedly that she naively "thought I could put a bunch of tiny houses on a small plot of land." It's not that easy, and "laws absolutely need to be changed for this." She already has about $4,000 on a GoFundMe page for this initiative. Perth problems "I'd been screaming for

While environmental services director Grant Machan is due to present a report to council next
month on the matter, Insp. Derek Needham, detachment commander for the Lanark County OPP, has contacted Mayor John Fenik and said he would like to address Perth town council on Tuesday, Dec. 11, to speak on the speeding matter, and other police issues. "We really need to speak to Insp. Needham
on this," said Fenik during the Perth town council meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 20. After the tabling of the report, and the delegation from Needham, the matter will then go to the committee of the whole meeting in January. The idea has already been endorsed by the Perth police services board back in October.

POLICE SEEK SUSPECTS IN DRUG STORE THEFTS Lanark County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is seeking assistance from the public to identify the person responsible for three separate break, enter and thefts at drug stores in Carleton Place. Between the hours of 10:25 p.m. and 2 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 14 and Thursday, Nov. 15 a
male, approximately 35 years of age, entered the three drug stores and stole a number of items. The businesses involved are the Pharmasave on Bridge Street at High Street and also two Shoppers Drug Mart locations, one on Lake Avenue East and the other on McNeely Avenue at Lake

ROCKY RAMP PUBLIC MEETING NOT LIKELY UNTIL NEW YEAR, PERTH COUNCIL DECIDES DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@ metroland.com Rocky ramp advocates, and opponents, will have a chance to have their say but not until the new year. Coun. Jim Graff said that he is receiving a lot of calls about the appearance of rocky ramps and "they are very upset with what has been going on," he said, during the Perth town council meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 20. He said he wanted to arrange a meeting between the town, residents, the Matrix engineering firm which developed the project, the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority
(RVCA), and Parks Canada, to "deal with this situation all in one shot." He also called on Matrix to prepare a report on the performance, thus far, of both rocky ramps, the Little Tay rocky ramp under the bridge, and the Haggart rocky ramps, at the end of Mill Street. Deputy Mayor John Gemmell said that, based on what he had heard from the public, "I thought everyone was over the moon about the big (Haggart) ramp," he said. Coun. Judy Brown, who sits on the RVCA board, wondered what authority Parks Canada would have at the meeting. "It's all RVCA," she said
of that stretch of water. Graff said that the rocky ramps have been in the works for years and that town hall and the public were always told to "give us a couple of years to see how things settle." Now, in 2018, "it's not exactly what we planned for," he said of the Little Tay ramp. And in talking with Parks Canada, Graff said that "they have some ideas," and that adding "one more person with experience would add to the meeting." Coun. Jim Boldt agreed that "Phase 2 (Haggart) in my opinion, (is) looking good and is working beautifully," he said. However, the other ramp "looks like a lunar landscape in low water," and was not close to the artist's rendering of what was envisioned for that area. During his re-election campaign, when knocking on doors along Harvey Street near the Haggart rocky ramp, he heard from people that that ramp was "perfect. Don't touch it." But Fenik and his wife used to live down by the Little Tay ramp and "that river has changed," since he

"I totally understand the residents' concerns," said Fenik, though he felt that the funding request for a new report from Matrix and a public meeting should go through the 2019 budget process. "I think we can get it right."
If there was to be another report, and a public meeting, Gemmell said he hoped that "this is it. We're not going to revisit this." Thereafter, "let nature take its course." Coun. Riq Turner said that he agreed with Fenik's idea of a mechanical dam since "we do need an adjustability to account for different flows," said Turner. "We didn't look far enough ahead." Boldt said that while he felt that the dams needed "some more tweaking, I don't think it needs a mechanized dam." Council voted unanimously to defer the motion to the 2019 budget process. "I believe public input is good," said Fenik. "I don't think we are expecting to reinvent the wheel." Graff said that he thought it would be "good, professional business," for Matrix to come to the shores of the Tay and "take a look," and that doing so should not cost the town thousands. "It shouldn't cost us anything," said Graff. "They should be no-cost items."

Four faces around the Perth town council table left the chambers as politicians for the last time on Nov. 20. At the final meeting for the council elected back in October 2014, Mayor John Fenik gave all councillors, departing and otherwise, a chance to have their final say as the meeting drew to a close. "I leave tonight with a tear in my eye," admitted Coun. Jim Boldt. "I take politics, and the running of this town, very seriously." Over the past four years, "we've had one hell of a ride," he said. "We got a lot accomplished." He said there was "a learning curve" when he arrived on council eight years ago. Although he did not always agree with his fellow councillors, he said, he was always "very passionate" about his role. He thanked staff for keeping the wheels of gov-
ernment running smoothly at Perth town hall, adding that, "I wish the next council a lot of success." He encouraged the new council to continue to respect the Perth taxpayer, and "I bid adieu to all my fellow councillors." Boldt, along with Deputy Mayor John Gemmell, Coun. Riq Turner and Coun. Jim Graff, were all given plaques commending their years of service on town council. (Boldt and Gemmell ran for mayor against Fenik, who was reelected. Graff ran for deputy mayor against Coun. Ed McPherson, losing to him. Turner chose not to run for re-election.) "This is my 15th year," on council, said Gemmell. "It's been happy and sad," with highs and lows, but, "above all, it's been enjoyable and rewarding," he said, before also thanking staff. "It's been a great eight years," said Coun. Judy Brown, who was re-elected to her council seat. "I'm looking forward to serving with four new councillors." Graff called his eight years on council "a terrific honour." He said he took great pride in being able to help fix problems for voters at town hall, joking
that, "I've just about driven Lauren (Walton, the town clerk) crazy," with his queries. "I wish the new council every success." Looking back to the financial hole the town was in more than a decade ago, "we are miles away from where we were," McPherson said. He paid tribute to the outgoing deputy mayor, Gemmell, saying he has "big shoes to fill. I'll do my best." Turner thanked the voters of Perth for electing him and also thanked "each and every one of you," around the council table. "(As) the newbie, I learned so much from each of you. He said the knowledge he picked up "made me a better councillor, a better person, a better citizen." Turner said that, despite the differences of opinion, at the heart of every member of council, "we wanted tomorrow to be better than today." He added that he was "honoured to be part of that for four years." Fenik rounded out the goodbyes, saying that, "It has been an honour and privilege to serve with each of you." He added that "This isn't goodbye," but merely until next time.

LIGHT IT UP SAFELY THIS HOLIDAY SEASON During the holiday season, it's important to enjoy time spent with family and friends. It is also the time of year where most Canadians are using a lot of electricity with additional Christmas lights on, the furnace running, spacer heaters on, the stove cooking dinner, plugging in your vehicles so they start and all the new gadgets getting plugged in. The Canadian Safety Council offers some safety tips for this winter and holiday season. Whether it's because you were shovelling the snow or pulling too hard on the extension cord, sometimes the cord gets damaged. If your extension cord is damaged at the plug or the sheathing, do not use the cord. The damage may cause you to get an electric shock. Repairing the cord with electrical tape is not recommended and will not ensure that it is safe to use the cord in the long run. Using timers for your outdoor holiday lights is not only a great way to ensure that they are on before you're home, but is also a great way to be environmentally conscious. A timer will also shut off the lights before you go to bed, saving you money on your power bill. You won't even have to leave the comfort of your own home to plug or unplug the lights. Turning off the lights before going to bed prevents the light bulbs from overheating in the night, and setting them on a timer ensures that it's not a task that might slip your mind. Whether it's at home or in the office, outlets can only handle one portable space heater. As soon as you plug in that second one, you'll trip the breaker. Most home outlets are rated for only a single 12-amp or 1,500-watt load. Check your space heater and any other electrical device that you're plugging to ensure it doesn't exceed this rating. Most modern houses have GFCI outlets on the exterior of your home to plug in holiday lights and other electrical equipment. The benefit of a GFCI outlet is electric shock protection for you when using portable cord- and-plug connected electrical equipment in an indoor or outdoor environment. While we're on the topic of GFCI outlets, think of hitting that test and reset button before you plug in your device. You want the GFCI to work to protect you from being electrocuted should there ever be an electrical fault. Consider doing this in the bathrooms in your house and on outside outlets at least once a month or ask your family or guests to test the GFCI before they use the outlet. It's better to ensure the protection is working long before you need it. Enjoy these tips which can help you have a safe and happy holiday season.

In 1819, James Mahon and his wife Ellen Troy, along with their eight children left Dublin, Ireland and sailed to their new home in Canada. They spent 44 days on the ship Ajax and landed in Canada July 07, 1819. From there James, Ellen and their family made their way to Drummond Township, Conc. 4, just outside of Perth near the Tennyson Road. While James and Ellen lived out their lives in the Perth area and are buried in the Old Burying Ground on Craig Street, many of
their children forged new homes in Renfrew County, Bolingbroke, the Crow Lake areas, Ogdensburg, NY, Michigan, Wisconsin and areas further westward. LANARK LODGE STAFF WORTHY OF ACCOLAD DEAR EDITOR, I read some negative
comments about Lanark Lodge in The Perth Courier recently (social scene on the editorial page), and a couple of others in the summer. While it's easy to complain in this imperfect world, there is so much to be said in favour of the lodge, starting with the front-line people, who are always short-staffed, yet they do their best where some would say, "Forget it." They are under persistent time pressures, and yet they do an efficient job and maintain an attitude of kindness. Long-term care takes a lot of humility, and most of us would be unable to do it. Anyone who visits the lodge will see this. My mother has been living there for several years now, and I haven't had a single instance that would be anywhere near worthy of a complaint; on the other hand, I could list many occasions worthy of accolades. The people there should be appreciated.

KNITTERS GIVE TO LANARK COUNTY ANGEL TREE A group of neighbours who knit are warming hearts throughout our community this holiday season. The 12 neighbours from Tay Valley Township have knit many creations for the Lanark County Angel Tree for Seniors program. The Angel Tree for Seniors program is organized by community volunteers and the Primary Care Outreach to Seniors (PCO) team of the North Lanark Community Health Centre - a part of Lanark Renfrew Health & Community Services. The angel tree allows members of our community the opportunity to give anonymous gifts (maximum $25 value) to seniors registered in supportive community programs or living in nursing homes throughout Lanark County. The first name and wish list of each senior is written on a tag, which is placed on a Christmas tree at one of several locations. The neighbours, who
gather monthly to knit and enjoy each other's company, were inspired to knit items for the program by one of their own; the remarkable Wilma Winton, who celebrated her 91st birthday this November. Winton, who has generously given countless hand-knitted items to multiple community causes over the years, donated several beautiful shawls to the angel tree in 2017 after learning about the program from a friend. "When Wilma suggested knitting for the seniors' angel tree at our June meeting, we thought it was a great idea," commented Joanne Tilston. The ladies knit throughout the summer and fall, creating a beautiful collection of hats, mittens, scarves, shawls, soft face clothes and a lap blanket. They also collected a generous monetary donation and some lovely purchased gifts for inclusion in the program. The care and intention
with which these ladies crafted their creations can be sensed when holding the finished items. In giving their creations, they are sharing both the item and that spirit with the individual who will receive the gift. Speaking with the knitters it is clear that they feel they are getting as much joy in giving the items, as the seniors will in receiving their lovely creations. Tilston noted, "Knitting for the program gave us a goal to work toward. It feels good to know that we are sharing with people in our community." Many of the knitters are seniors themselves: "We are seniors helping seniors," commented Marguerite Bradley. Sitting in the cosy living room of Winton's home on the night the ladies gathered to donate their creations to the angel tree (watching them laugh, swap knitting tips, show off new creations, and knit for others), it is clear that they
have quietly created something special at the end of their country road. Building a caring community, one stitch at a time. Starting in 2014 with the enthusiasm and leadership of community volunteer Sherrie Seward-Humby and the PCO program, the Lanark County Angel Tree for Seniors program has grown every year to reach more seniors (with 700 gifts given to date), as individuals, community partners and businesses get on board. This year trees are located at North Lanark Community Health Centre in Lanark Village, Home Hardware in Perth, Canadian Tire in Carleton Place, Special Greetings in Smiths Falls and the Tay Valley Municipal Office in Tay Valley Township. There is also a "virtual tree" available online which individuals can use to sign up and give a gift, which they will return to a specified drop-off location. The last day to return gifts

FROM TROUBADOURS TO THE INTERWEBS - STILL TELLING OUR STORIES STEPHANIE GRAY REMEMBERS HER TIME AS A JOURNALIST HERE STEPHANIE GRAY Column
In the grand scheme of things, I did not spend a lot of time as a full-time journalist. If we look at the math, my years as a reporter only make up about a quarter of my entire adult working life. That being said, those six years as a reporter gave me invaluable experience that I use every day. In fact, hardly a day goes by that I don't say, "When I was a reporter" or "When I worked at The Perth Courier ...". It probably gets a little dull for people after a while. I'm bringing this up be-
cause of the "Newspapers Matter" campaign underway by this family of newspapers and News Media Canada to help build trust in community newspapers and to recognize the importance of local journalism. I was lucky enough to work at a community newspaper prior to the sweeping changes that came with the fantabulous interwebs. When I left The Courier (other than this column) to pursue other adventures, we had just switched from DOS to Windows. We accessed painful dial-up internet on one computer in the hallway. We didn't have email. We still developed black-and-white film ourselves in a darkroom at the office. We were just starting to use digital cameras. People paid subscriptions to receive this weekly newspaper or bought it at stores. They had to wait for "paper day" to get the local news. We didn't have to
worry about being scooped by the interwebs. It really was quite a different time. Now reporters must be a lot of different things (writers and videographers) and they have to publish to social media constantly. As mentioned last week in these pages, though, the main thrust remains the same: They are storytellers. For me, journalism has always been about telling a story fairly and accurately. It is about building trust and relationships. It's about people knowing that if they look to something you have written, it will give the information you need in a balanced, thoughtful, accurate way. I will never forget the last Lanark county council meeting I covered as a reporter in November 1999. Carleton Place mayor Brian Costello was the warden, and at the end of the meeting he acknowledged the fact I was moving on to
new adventures, and he said I would be missed because I was always "fair." He said that even when they didn't like what I wrote, they knew they had it coming. Then he presented me with a Lanark County history book signed by all the councillors and some staff. I was a bit overwhelmed at the time. My first thought was, "Clearly, I should have been harder on these people." But mostly I was grateful. I always try hard to treat people fairly - no matter what hat I am wearing - and it was a good feeling to have that acknowledged as a journalist, where showing bias can destroy trust. Since then, I have used the incredible knowledge one gets from covering a community to do myriad things - from teaching about communications to helping Lanark County share its stories, to building on relationships to try to make positive social
changes in the community. Journalism taught me much more than writing. It taught me how to actually communicate and ask questions and research and explain. It taught me about people and that there is always (always!) at least two sides to a story. It taught me to dig deeper to find out why things are the way they are. I don't doubt for a second that local journalists are giving everything they have under challenging circumstances to bring the news to you in a fair way. Newspapers matter. Local journalism matters. It helps to pump the blood of the community and democracy. OPP INVESTIGATE THEFT FROM SUGAR CAMP Lanark County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is seeking assistance from the public to identify the person or persons responsible for a break, enter and theft at a sugar camp on Waddle Creek Road in Lanark Highlands Township. MATH TEACHER, AGAIN INSPIRES THE PDCI CLASS OF '68 DEAR EDITOR, If one believes the media, good math teachers are rare. Back in the '60s when the "New Math" curriculum was being taught, Josie (Rubino) Roberts easily became a favourite of her Grade 9 students. She taught some of them each year until the end of Grade 12. That summer she and her husband Merv, moved away for other
career opportunities. Her homeroom math class was especially disappointed they would not have her for their final fifth year. However, like the committed teacher she was, she promised that all they had to do was graduate Grade 13 and she would come back to see them. True to her word, Roberts was back to congratulate them at
their October convocation. Fast forward 50 years and Roberts has been encouraging graduates all year to organize a reunion. At the 11th month, Ron Jackson and I took the challenge and are busy compiling a database. The list includes many of our Grade 12 friends as well, since some students left early for Ryerson, nursing and other careers.

The Perth fire department is looking for a few good teenagers for its junior firefighter program. "They would not be coming to fire calls," said fire chief Trevor Choffe, during a presentation to Perth town council's committee of the whole meeting in October, but, for all intents and purposes, they would otherwise be a member of the team, "giving them the most realistic experience possible ... to give them a taste" of life at the fire hall. "We do, from time to time, take co-operative education students, so, this is an extension of that," said Choffe, as this program is aimed at young people aged 16 to 20. The youth will take part in training, and is seen as a way to get the next generation of firefighters into the fire hall earlier. "It's getting harder and harder to get them to stay," said Choffe. "You've invested money in them (training) and then they are gone." At the age of 18, people can legally volunteer as firefighters, but if young people wish to go the co-op route, "we have a working relationship with both school boards," he said. Deputy Mayor John Gemmell noted that even if a youngster cannot go along on a fire call, "you're still going to be exposed," to the environment, training, and equipment.

REEVE AUBREY CHURCHILL CELEBRATES 30 YEARS IN DNE COUNCIL LIFE WITH SEND-OFF PARTY DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@ metroland.com Aubrey Churchill celebrated the end of his 30 year political career with a bang, with just weeks left in his latest, and last, term as Drummond/North Elmsley (DNE) Township's reeve. The retirement party for Churchill was held at the Perth Civitan Club on Nov. 16 and saw Perth Mayor John Fenik act as the master of ceremonies. "30 years, it's a long time," said Fenik. "I can't believe it."
A political history DNE's new political boss, reeve-elect Steve Fournier, gave an overview of Churchill's years in local political office, starting with three friends (Fred Healy, Laurie Duncan, and Don MacFarlane) encouraging him to run for the local elections in the Township of North Elmsley. He won a seat and was sworn in on Dec. 6 of that
year. He was also appointed to the Perth and District Memorial Hospital board that year. Over the next 30 years he would serve on council, and then spend 18 years as reeve, getting first elected in 2000. In 2006, he served as Lanark County warden. Back in 1988, councillors were paid $63 a meeting, averaging out to about $700 a year. Clerk Michael McEwen ran his duties from his house, as did treasurer Don MacFarlane. Council held their meetings at the Port Elmsley Hall until 1995, when an office addition was added onto the public works garage. Churchill supported amalgamation between North Elmsley and Drummond Townships, which came into being on New Year's Day 1998 - just in time for the ice storm of '98, and that year's spring flooding. Some highlights from his years in office include: • Establishing recreation cost-sharing agreements with Perth and Smiths Falls.

Other highlights included meeting Queen Elizabeth II in 2003, laying a wreath at the Perth cenotaph every Remembrance Day, and opening the Real Deal store 10 years ago dur-
ing a snowstorm. "I remain committed to carrying on your legacy," promised Fournier.
For he's a jolly good fellow Lanark-FrontenacKingston MPP Randy Hillier congratulated Churchill on his three decades in public life, and said that the area's MP, Scott Reid, was unable to attend - but sent his best regrets and best wishes - as Reid's father was being honoured at that same moment with a lifetime achievement award in Ottawa. Hillier noted that in his time at Queen's Park, he had seen three premiers (Dalton McGuinty, Kathleen Wynne and Doug Ford), while Reid has seen four prime ministers (Jean Chrétien, Paul Martin, Stephen Harper, and Justin Trudeau).
"They come and go, but Aubrey Churchill doesn't," joked Hillier. "He's just here! Voters (here) know they've got a good thing." Throughout his riding, there are dozens of mayors and reeves and councillors, but "none has struck us (Hillier and Reid) as being better at what they do ... than Aubrey Churchill," said Hillier. And in his retirement, "I'm sure we'll see you still rocking the docks!" down at Rideau Ferry. "I've learned from Aubrey. I'll keep it short," said Lanark County chief administrative officer Kurt Greaves. Having seen him at county council in Perth, he knows to look for Churchill's foot to start tapping, to see him getting an idea. "When he speaks, the room goes quiet," said Greaves, calling Churchill "a straight talker...who suffers no fools." Dr. Paula Stewart, medical officer of health for the Lanark, Leeds and Grenville Health Unit, spoke about the eight years that Churchill spent on the health unit's board. "I hope Lanark County
sends me someone as good as him," to replace him, she said. Former Smiths Falls mayor Dennis Staples recalled meeting Churchill for the first time at the old Rideau Ferry Inn, with the Smiths Falls representatives on one side of the hall, and their rural counterpoarts on the other side. And Aubrey? He was right in the middle of the room. Staples called Churchill "very honest, a straight shooter, (and) reliable," he said. "If all of the municipal politicians we had to deal with were like Aubrey, it would be a breeze," said Staples. The evening was not entirely filled with accolades. Fenik noted that Churchill "can be a wee bit stubborn," but that he had a political partner for many years who complimented him: Deputy Reeve Gail Code, whom Fenik called "the sweet side of this equation." "I'm really happy for you Aubrey," said Code, who added that her respect for him has "grown through

CAKE WOMAN HAS FACINATING STORY IN PERTH CATHY JAMES Column
In my last column, I reminisced about Mrs. Kolarik's cakes, as my mom and I discovered similar looking ones while visiting Montenegro last month. Since that article published, I have learned so much about Mrs. Kolarik! First off, I apologize for misspelling her name. With that, a few community members reached out and outlined their own memories of the Kolarik family and of her cakes. Brad Mills let me know that his current house once belonged to the Drysdale family who first hired Mr. Kolarik after he immigrated to Canada from Czechoslovakia. Meanwhile, Karen Fox lived around the street from the Kolariks and she doesn't remember a special occasion without one of Mrs. Kolarik's cakes being present! She says: those cakes were my childhood. Now, there is one more important element that comes from this
exercise: the Kolariks' story is fascinating. David Bromley shares their story on his Perth Remembered website, and how they came to Canada is a story in of itself. Code joked that because of his obvious integrity, "perhaps as a cost-saving measure, our communities could hire him as an integrity commissioner. It'd be a lot cheaper!"
A lighter note Accountant Howard Allen, who has known Churchill since he was a teenager, joked that Churchill's golf game can only get better in retirement: "He goes into so many bunkers, we think he's trying to be Saddam Hussein!" he joked. Allen added, on a more serious note, that Churchill could now look forward to spending "More time with Anne, the love of his life, and care for her and his family," he said. "You're going to be missed. I'm going to miss abusing you!" Being in the public eye, "is not a glamorous thing. It's something you do for your community," Allen added. "Love you very much." Churchill's public works director, Scott Cameron, said that "to work with Aubrey, the bar gets raised." In other work places, when the bosses' voice is heard, workers scatter. But in Port Elmsley, "when you heard his voice, you'd say 'Oh good, Aubrey's here.'" The working relationship was respectful, and forthright. "I didn't candy coat anything with Aubrey," said Cameron. "I'm going to miss that." A well-known member of the Rideau Ferry Yacht Club, Cameron said that "I like Aubrey (to a) captain," he said. "He looks after his
crew. In fashion, we look after him, and stay the course." He told Fournier that "you're grabbing the wheel of a ship that is on an even keel." A more light-hearted send-off from a staffer came from treasurer Linda Van Alstine, who dressed up as a Christmas elf, and offered Churchill a rhyme he could use when someone called him about a municipal issue. "Better call Steve, I'm no longer reeve!" she said. DNE's clerk administrator, Cindy Halcrow, found herself overwhelmed with emotion. "I'm choked up," she said. "I didn't think I would be. But I am." She had thought that speaking at Churchill's retirement party would be "just another chore," but it really brought his departure into sharp focus. She moved to the DNE offices in 2011 and "I thought I'd died and gone to Heaven," she said. "(I'm) so fortunate that I do not have a dysfunctional council." Halcrow reiterated her admiration for Churchill's brevity and directness of speech: "He tells you what he thinks, whether you like it or not. That makes my life so easy. He does not have a big ego. I don't need to manage a big ego." From the point of view of an administrator she respected him in that he let her "do my job without political interference," she said. But then, she noted, he's used to taking advice from strong women in his life. "You've got to respect a man who listens to his wife's advice," she said. "Aubrey is the man he is because of Anne's influence."
A wife's influence Not surprisingly, while it was Aubrey's retirement party, Anne got a lot of kudos too. "Without our partners, wives, we really couldn't do our jobs," Fenik said. Those women, and men, are "keeping the home fires burning. (Anne) is the glue. She's kind and caring," said Fenik introducing Anne, who came to the lectern with her own prop - a long, long "honey do" list with items needing attention, going back to 1988.
"That'll keep him busy," she joked as the long sheet unfurled in front of her. "I'm ready for this. Hope you are," she said, looking at her husband. She said she still remembers the night he came home, 30 years ago, and said he was considering running for council. "I was not too excited about this," she recalled. She was working at a bank in Smiths Falls, was recovering from significant health issues, and they still had teenage children at home. "The thought actually frightened me a little." The closest she had come to politics was serving in a mock parliament in high school, "which I hated. I did not like politics." But despite her misgivings, her husband ran and won his seat. Over those 30 years, "I could not think of one time that you were not there for us as a family," because of his elected duties, she said. And while she joked that she hoped they could take up dancing lessons, and other things that had been "on hold for a while," when it came to his home duties, "you always got the things done that needed to be done," at home, she said. In the end, she said she was going to throw the "honey do" list on the fire, and instead work on a "bucket list" with him instead for their retired years. "I'm so proud of you and your accomplishments," she said. "It was always a great ride along the way, with a few bumps along the way." She said that he could be "tough when you had to be," but that he "always remained kind." At the end of the evening, Churchill got up and thanked everyone for attending, and thanked his staff for arranging the soiree. "I thought I would retire and just fade into the sunset," Churchill said. "The office staff said, 'No way, that's not going to happen.' " He joked that he was "not sure if all of those kind words are true, but I'll accept them," he said. He said he looked forward to getting "a little better" on his golf game, and told Fournier that "you've got a good council coming on board," in December. "Good luck."

When Hansel & Gretel stumble upon a beautiful candy cottage, the lovely Lady Malevola may not be as nice as they thought, but her evil henchmen Potz and Panz are even worse! And what about poor Valiant the horse, trotting through the forest by himself - and where did Cuddles the bear come from? While some amateur groups purchase a "readymade" panto for their holiday entertainments, BarnDoor has upped the ante with an all-original show, with original music and script that they think
might just become a classic panto in its own right. According to a post on the school's Facebook page this morning, bus 1256 (also known as the Pumpkin Bus among students) was involved in a collision, but there were no injuries. Bill Loshaw, acting superintendent with the Upper Canada District School Board for the Lanark family of schools, said the collision occurred around 8:30 a.m. Submitted/Sharon Bourque Over half the Grade 9 students at Perth and District Collegiate Institute participated in Take Your Kid to Work Day on Wednesday, Nov. 14. Six of the students (plus two students of town staff) joined town staff for a tour of the town facilities. They started out at town hall where they met with Mayor John Fenik and then had a tour of town hall, the fire hall, the water filtration plant, the town garage, the sewage lagoons out at Wild Life Road, the landfill site and then to O'Reilly's for lunch. After lunch they toured the arena, the library, the museum, the tourism office, and the pool. Thanks to Shannon Baillon for coordinating the event and all the town staff who welcomed the students. She now has a new place in Almonte, "and I am doing much better ... It's a very nice place. No complaints," she said. Throughout her experience, she got to see firsthand the challenges women living with housing insecurity face. "This is a problem for women," she said. Some men would invite her to stay with them in their spare room, and then "they kept approaching me for sex," she said. At one point, she had to barricade the door to keep one persistent pervert out of her room. "I don't want anyone to go through what I've gone through." While she may not have been heard in Ottawa, that changed once she moved to Lanark County. "I've got more response from the rural areas," she said. This past August, she contacted Perth Town Hall, and got in touch with Mayor John Fenik in August. "I dropped to my knees in front of Fenik in his office," said Chambers. She had received a call back from his office an hour after she visited the town hall. Fenik heard her out, and even went to Gatineau, Que., to look at a tiny house with her. "He stepped up and he listened," she said. "He took time
and I appreciate that." Keeping a positive attitude has proved to be instrumental in her struggle to break free. "I've stayed positive through all of this ... There is no point in anger," said Chambers. "I do have my off days. I am physically and emotionally exhausted from the summer." But in the end, "it's not about me. It's about the end game now," of a tiny home commune. Cornerstone Landing support Cornerstone Landing Youth Services is "definitely interested in the tiny homes community" idea, said executive director Terrilee Kelford during a telephone interview on Monday, Nov. 26. In fact, her organization tried to get a similar idea off the ground in Smiths Falls off the ground earlier this year, asking the town council to "gift" them some land where they could put down about four tiny homes. However, that would require a site specific zoning amendment, so, she returned to council and asked them to change their bylaws regarding tiny homes across town. "We need the town to be proactive about this," said Kelford. About 60 per cent of her youth housing cases come from Smiths Falls and while the town's economic prospects continue to grow, with increased prosperity

We all want development," said Kelford, of the town's sudden burst of good fortune, but this has a direct impact on the most vulnerable who can barely sustain housing in the private market as it is. While the recent municipal elections have seen the issue slow down around council chambers, she is hoping that the matter will be revisited once new councils are sworn in in early December. Even so, Tay Valley Township has taken the lead, allowing tiny homes to be placed there - in fact, they even sought out Kelford's input while they were drafting the bylaw. Away from Lanark County however, Kelford said she is worried about the "systemic structures that keep people out of affordable houses." For example, "new, tiny homes, banks and CMHC (Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation) will not finance them ... you can't get a mortgage." Chambers' idea for a tiny homes commune might be one solution to help with the housing crisis, for people who might have mental health or environmental issues. For example, people suffering from paranoia and social anxiety might not like to live in an apartment building, where "you can hear every conversation your neighbours are having, you can smell every meal they are cooking," she said. As such, a tiny home might be right for them,

HERITAGE MAP-MAKER RECOGNIZED PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com The 10th anniversary of the Economic Development Summit on Nov. 16 saw the Bill Thake Memorial Award given to Doug Bond of the Township of Rideau Lakes. Bond is considered a visionary who wants to shine a spotlight on the natural beauty of the Rideau Lakes and the Frontenac Arch Biosphere. He accomplishes this in many ways, including as a map-maker and the driving force behind the famous Heritage Map, according to Andy Brown, the CAO of the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville, in his introduction of Bond. A retired teacher and author, Bond is also the chair of the Rideau Lakes municipal heritage advisory committee. As he continues to direct his energy into educating and entertaining, Bond's work is recognized for bringing new
admirers to the region. Warden of the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville Robin Jones introduced the award at the summit and said a few words about the inspiration behind the award - Bill Thake. "Bill was a recordbreaker, serving 52 consecutive years on Westport council to set a Canadawide record as the longestserving head of a municipality," said Jones. "Those who knew him well remember his warmth and his terrific sense of humour." Thake was warden of the United Counties an unsurpassed four times, and was known for his strong leadership and mentoring skills. The first recipient of the Bill Thake award, Glenn Allen, and Thake's widow, Marlene, joined Jones for the presentation of the award. Brown and economic development officer Deanna Clark made the in-
troductions. Brown spoke about the many tourism assets that have been established throughout the greater Leeds and Grenville region as a result of Bond's work, such as walking and boating tours, as well as cycling and paddling tours which are now available as cellphone apps. A key initiative of Bond's has also been promoting the exploration of local natural trails. "Tours, whether on land or water, take visitors to places of architectural, historical and geographical significance," said Brown. "Canadians and international travellers are looking at ways to see places off the beaten path and Doug's tours provide much-needed direction in this area." Over the past 52 years, Bond has volunteered with various community groups, including the Simpson Masonic Lodge, the Portland United Church, to name a few.

PERTH COUNCIL PASSES PAY INCREASE FOR DEPUTY MAYOR, NEW COMPENSATION PACKAGE FOR COUNCIL DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@ metroland.com The outgoing 2014-18 session of Perth town council has approved a plan to see incoming deputy mayor-elect Ed McPherson get a pay increase. The motion was passed
5-2 at the Nov. 20 council meeting. Meanwhile, all other members of council will not only receive their annual cost-of-living adjustment made to their pay, but their pay will now also be corrected to make up for pay that will be lost after the federal govern-
ment closes off a "tax shelter," according to Mayor John Fenik. "This is a recommendation from our treasurer," Fenik said during the Nov. 20 town council meeting. If council did not approve the increase in councillor pay to make up for the tax shelter shortfall, "the next
council will be subject to a pay cut," Fenik said. The pay rise for councillors was an effort "to keep parity," with their current pay level, he added. Coun. Judy Brown later explained that the rise would "compensate for losing the one-third tax break from the federal
government." However, Coun. Jim Boldt said he didn't feel the deputy mayor, no matter who it is, deserved a pay rise. "I don't believe that the deputy mayor job is that much more critical than any other councillor," he said, save for when the mayor is absent. He turned to the current deputy mayor, John Gemmell, and jokingly said, "You can hit me if you want." Coun. Jim Graff reiterated his frustration that
council pay was being discussed at the very last council meeting of the 2014-2018 term. "This all should have been done in the first three months of the fourth year of this council," Graff said. muneration." The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), she wrote, will be eliminating "one-third of the remuneration paid to the elected members of the council ... deemed as expenses." The deputy mayor's pay will rise to $19,089.09 from $15,215.57 in 2019 (with cost-of-living taking into account), while the mayor's salary goes to $29,289.54 from $26,083.84 (again, with cost-of-living and accounting for the CRA changes). As for councillors, their pay goes to $15,864.74 in 2019 from $14,128.75 in 2018 (with cost-of-living and accounting for the CRA changes.) Tempest in a teapot "This council falls behind every year with the other municipalities," said Fenik in defending the changes to how council is paid. As for the deputy mayor position, he felt it was "drastically underpaid for the work that is being done," and said that that position should be even better compensated, "not just this one little bump." In discussing the expense account open to councillors, Coun. Riq Turner noted that "most of those dollars do not get used every year," he said. "I never get close to using all of that money. It's not like if you don't use it all by the end of the year you get to keep it." In fact, when averaged out, taking the amount of working hours into account compared to what they receive in pay, Turner said that amount is "less than what a lot of people in the town make on their own." Besides, "these are small numbers," said Turner. "It's a tempest in a teapot." Boldt agreed that, like Turner, "I have rarely ever come close to spending" his allowable amount. Brown agreed with Turner's assessment about averaging out councillor pay, saying that "it's probably less than minimum wage." Gemmell said every time the matter of council pay comes up around the table, "we are almost embarrassed on this. We shouldn't (be)," he said. "We earn what we work for." Graff commended Gemmell when he "very graciously refused to take the full amount," of a proposed pay increase several years ago. While thanking Graff for his commendation, Gemmell pointed out that "that was my choice then," and that his current vote was for the future council, which he would not be a part of.

a great job; our guest speakers really motivate the students," Peters said. "The last few years, I felt like we needed to look at something bigger, and that's how this came about." With the student population decreasing - the school was around 900 at its highest, and now is about 400 students - it's getting harder to raise funds like they have in the past. Trevor Choffe, the fire chief in Perth, is going with Peters as his "support crew." "Last year they had 141 people registered; there is a group that does the trek itself. It's a full on marathon, 42 kilometres." Peters said he has run marathons before; it's the altitude that will be a challenge. "I'm reading a book on breathing - trying to work on duplicating higher altitude breathing," he said, as he needs to reduce the amount of oxygen he needs to accomplish this marathon. "There is 12 days of trekking and acclimatization. It's a designed itinerary to get to base camp. There are
designated spots to get to, assuming weather and everything co-operates," Peters explained. His leave of absence through the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario was contingent upon Peters' progress reports during his trek. "We're going to promote Relay for Life," he said. "I'm not sure how often I'll be able to get online, but the idea is to have a daily blog." The school's Relay event will be held May 10, 2019, and then he will leave soon after to hit the Mount Everest challenge. "We are trying to attract more participation from Grade 7/8 students," he said. He said he wants to appreciate being healthy, "and to be able to take on the challenge. That's the reminder I get every year at Relay, how fortunate I am, how we all are, to do something like this." Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon is an international high altitude adventure sports event held from Mt. Everest Base Camp, criss-crossing the high Sherpa trails of Khumbu valley on May 29 every year.
This event celebrates the historical ascent on Mt. Everest by late Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary on May 29, 1953. Runners from around the world can take part in such categories as the 60kilometre extreme ultra, 42-kilometre full marathon or the 21-kilometre half marathon. To support Peters in his journey, you can make a donation to his GoFundMe page (until his Relay for Life page is set up, at which time he will transfer donations to the Cancer Society page). On the fundraising page, Peters has a goal of $10,000 - but that's not for his trip, it's an amount he wants to raise for the Cancer Society. He's paying his own way to Nepal. "The ultimate goal of this would be to get every student at St. John to participate in Relay for Life," he said. "Now that we do it as a day time event, it allows kids who want to participate throughout the day, that opportunity to do so." THANK YOU My prayers have been answered and I thank God for providing me with the medical care and support required to become well and return home. A special Thank You to the doctors, nurses, PCAs, therapists, dieticians and support staff at Kingston General Hospital and Perth Site (rehabilitation) for their medical care and support. My prayer circle was large. Led by Reverend Gerry Kerr, it included immediate and extended family, UCW and Shuffleboard group of St. Paul’s United Church, Ladies Auxiliary Legion Branch 244, Perth, Blue Heron Golfers, Perthshire neighbours and many other friends. All of your prayers, calls, visits, gifts, support and encouragement were very much appreciated. I am most proud and thankful for the excellent care and support provided by my children, their spouses, grandchildren and great-grandchildren during my 109 day hospitalization. (Nana, Mum), died peacefully in Victoria General Hospital November 7th, 2018 at the age of 93. Joan was admitted the day before, after a fall in her beloved home at Jeskin Aerie Assisted Living. Left with a fractured pelvis the doctor felt would heal in time, her death was unexpected and likely from cardiac arrest. Surrounded by family just hours before she passed on, Joan shared many stories from days gone by in her typical cheerful manner. Joan often expressed gratitude for living a long and happy life with few regrets. In those last few hours she focused on family and reminded us to “never forget to cross your t’s and dot your i’s.” She had no unfinished business. Born October 14th, 1925 in Duncan BC, Joan grew up mostly in Victoria. One night in 1947, at the Roller Bowl in Victoria, she met a young sailor from Royal Roads. Three months later, at age 22, she married Stanley Mitchell and soon afterwards Joan and her sailor moved to Halifax NS, to begin raising a family. Joan was the quintessential Navy Wife: ready, steady, resourceful, loving and strong willed. She had to be: raising 3 boys and a girl, much of the time alone while Stanley was at sea. The family lived in Halifax, Ottawa, Victoria and Burlington. In retirement Stan and Joan lived at their Otty Lake cottage, Mission Texas, Saudi Arabia and Victoria. The two of them were warmly social and made many friends everywhere they went. Joan/Mum/Nana was predeceased by Stanley in 2005 and youngest son Bryan in 2011. She is survived by children: Rodney (Heidi), Bruce, Robyn (Gary), grandchildren: Victoria (Steven), Heather (David), Kathleen (Shayne), William (Allyce), great Grandchildren James and Chloe, sisters-in-law Evelyn and Audrey and nieces: Leslie, Joy, Debbie, Tracey, Nancy, Erica and Ingrid. The family offers heartfelt thanks to the staff and residents of Jesken Aerie for the warm friendship and nurturing care that enriched Joan’s last years. Also to the staff at Victoria General Hospital and Royal Jubilee Hospital for the compassion and professionalism they have shown to our Mum and Nana both of late and over the years. A celebration of Joan’s life will be held in Victoria at a later date and next summer at Otty Lake. He was a cool uncle, funny and loyal friend, caring nurse, and awesome self-taught musician who was loved and respected by all whose lives he touched. Charles (Chuck) Russell Stewart, passed away in Perth, Ontario at the age of 81 years on Thursday, November 22nd, 2018 at home in his bed with his family by his side. Chuck overcame heart disease, cancer, and pulmonary fibrosis. He leaves behind his wife of 47 years, Nina. He was an outstanding father to Chuck and Mark (Kari), Poppa to Priya and Lincoln, brother-in-law to John (Sharron) Celestini and Irv Reilly. Born in Galt, Ontario, March 25th, 1937 to Margaret Schumacher and Charles Stewart. Step son to Reg Coughlin and step brother to Bea Pagnan (Nat). Chuck attained a B.A. Arts, B.A. Philosophy and Masters Correctional Counselling; he retired following a career dedicated to Provincial Corrections (probation/parole), Provincial Corrections Staff training and development, and Superintendent of the Perth Jail. His hobbies were many including photography, golf, tennis, skiing, cottaging, travel, woodworking and poker. He will be sadly missed by all his family and many very good friends. Trelly, Cheryl (nee Conroy)
Cheryl passed away peacefully at the age of 51 years on Thursday, October 4th, 2018 at her home in Ortonville Michigan following a long courageous battle with cancer with her husband David and family friend Jan Hall by her side. She was the beloved wife of David Trelly, stepmom of Brittany Trelly, daughter-in-law of the late Millie Trelly of Rochester, New York, dearly loved daughter of Lyle (late June) Conroy of Perth and cherished sister of Tracey Conroy (Blake Inwood). Cremation has taken place. Sophie their Golden Retriever dog and their cats were the love of her life. Cheryl attended Public and High School in Perth. Following this education, she attended Algonquin College in Ottawa and then accepted employment as a Hairdresser in Brockville where she was employed for 18 years. On October 13, 2001 she married David Trelly of Honeoye Falls, NY. In 2013 they moved to Michigan. After moving to Michigan David & Cheryl spent many enjoyable weekends on the “Margaritiville” when the weather was good plying the waters of Lake St. Clair. Her love of Figure Skating started in Perth at the age of 8 and continued until she accepted employment in Brockville. While there she completed all Dances up to and including Gold Dances. During this time, she also taught young skaters. She continued as Skating Pro in Honeoye Falls and in Michigan. When her cancer weakened her for teaching, she attended schooling and was appointed a U S Silver Dance Test Judge in November 2017. She was highly respected wherever she went as one with a great smile and laughter and such a spirit for life. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. David, Lyle, Tracey and Blake wish to thank all of those who expressed condolences on both sides of the border of United States and Canada and contributed to the Cancer Society of Lanark County (Wheels of Hope).

BEVERLY LLOYD JOHN March 25, 1944 November 19, 2018 Died peacefully at Providence Care Hospital, Kingston, Ontario with family present. A proud graduate of Royal Military College (1967) and Dalhousie University (MBA 1971), Lloyd was a consummate professional, a wise and unassuming man of great integrity and a true gentleman. He had a successful career in economic development with federal, provincial, and municipal governments, private sector, and as an independent consultant. Lloyd served on many boards and committees, was past president of the RMC Foundation, and a former Canadian Handball Champion. He read voraciously, was a talented artist, an enthusiastic hockey player for sixty years, loved nature and was happiest when paddling his red canoe. Above all, he was the devoted, and dearly loved husband of Mary (Jordan) for fifty-one years, best ever dad to Tara (Steve Vanneste), Jennifer (Doug Podmore) and Mark (Kezia Williamson), adoring grandpa of Tyler, Madeline, Caitlin, Liam, Evan, Elliott, Wynn and Rose. Lloyd is also survived by his sisters Laura (Gordon Heimbecker) and Leslie (Gary Wain), and will be fondly remembered by Donna and Don Banham, Barbara Jordan and Allan Morrison, Valerie and Paul Gowsell, Trish and Jon Allen, Helen and Mike Lynch, and by many nieces, nephews, and friends. Lorraine Rekmans Green party Lorraine Rekmans has been an advocate for environmental and social justice issues through her work with both media and non-governmental organizations. With a background in journalism, Lorraine has extensive experience in policy development, government, industry, public affairs and Indigenous communities. She is the former Executive Director of the National Aboriginal Forestry Association, and has spent the majority of her career in the not-forprofit sector. Lorraine was instrumental in a number of natural resource development initiatives in Northern Ontario before settling in Eastern Ontario in 2001. She was involved in setting up local forestry enterprises and in developing the first Aboriginal-owned forestry marketing co-operative in Canada. She has supported and advocated for sustainable use of natural resources through organizing, research, writing, advocacy and regional and national conferences. As the former Executive Director of the National Aboriginal Forestry Association (NAFA), Lorraine worked on national and international forest policy. She has co-chaired an international dialogue on forestry at the UN Forum on Forests, and helped organize the World Forestry Congress at Quebec City. Lorraine assisted in writing a number of international declarations including the Indigenous Peoples Declaration on Forestry, which was submitted at the World Forestry Congress, in 2003. We need to invest in clean energy now and institute initiatives that keep the onus for pollution prevention on the worst offenders. Under Harper, application processing wait times rose significantly for our veterans. They gutted that department, closing local access offices and laying off staff. Trudeau campaigned specifically on fixing the problem in the 2015 general election. Instead, he has done little to help over the past three years, even leaving money earmarked for our vets unspent. The men and women who have served our country deserve the very best service from our government. That's not what they've received from both the red and blue camps, and I'm determined to advocate loudly for that to change. Our vets and their families should get timely access to the benefits they've earned - anything less shows a lack of respect for their sacrifice. In this election and those in the future, I ask you to really consider what's being offered by each party. Platforms, leaders and priorities change. Don't just vote for a colour by habit; make your candidate earn your support! Think of your values and your hopes for the future. I hope to represent those for you in the House of Commons on Dec. 3.

REASON FOR MOTHER'S TEARS REMAINED A MYSTERY WORDS OF JOY AND SADNESS FILLED HER DIARIES, MARY COOK RECALLS MARY COOK Column
The two coal oil lamps sat on the table, one at either end, giving off a small circle of light, that barely lit that corner of the kitchen. Over the table, hanging from the ceiling, was the Coleman lamp that was only lit when we had company. The little fragile wicks were too expensive to waste on family evenings only. I could sense that all was not well. Mother was hunched over her diary, and I could see the pencil moving quickly, as if she had to get something down
in a hurry. Everyone but Father was sitting around the big pine table, busy with our own amusements, as we did every night after everything had been redded up. Audrey and I were thumbing through the Eaton's catalogue, but I wasn't paying attention. My eyes were on Mother. Often she would write, pause a bit, and look up at the ceiling as if searching for the next word to write in her diary. But that night, there was no pausing. She was writing quickly, and once a page was filled, she flipped it over, and started anew. She wasn't really writing in a diary. It wasn't like the one Santa had brought me for Christmas ... a little red satin cover book with a gold clasp and its very own key. No, Mother's diaries were scribblers bought at the one-cent sale at the drugstore. The covers looked like black oilcloth,
and as soon as one was filled, it was put into the kitchen cupboard, not to be touched by anyone but Mother. I had no idea what she wrote, but scarcely a night went by that she wasn't bent over her diaries at the kitchen table. That night, she seemed a million miles away. Often, she would write a few words, and then chuckle to herself. This night was different. Then I saw a tear roll down her cheek. She brushed it away quickly and kept at her frantic writing. What could she be putting down on paper? If it was upsetting, why did she write it in the first place? My sister noticed it, too, but said nothing. I shifted on the bench, and Audrey seemed to know that I was about to ask Mother if there was something wrong. Audrey put her hand on my arm, and I knew she was telling
me to say nothing. The frantic writing went on. My brothers were too busy at their own projects to take notice, and Father, sitting by the stove with the Ottawa Farm Journal, had fallen asleep. It was just my sister and I who could see the gentle tears on Mother's face. Audrey made a big production of turning the pages of the catalogue and in a voice that was more shrill than usual, began pointing out things we could buy if money was no object. I tried to be interested, but it was so unusual for Mother to ever shed a tear, that my heart was heavy, and it was all I could do to sit quietly and say nothing. Then the old CPR clock over the icebox struck, and it was time for bed. My three brothers raced for the stairs, Father roused from his chair at the stove, and Audrey closed the catalogue and nudged me
away from the table. Mother closed her diary and put her opened hands on its cover and just sat there looking around the kitchen, almost as if she was seeing it for the first time. When I went to bed, I couldn't put out of my mind what I had seen at the kitchen table. What had Mother written that had caused her to shed a tear? Audrey wouldn't talk about it and told me not to worry about it. Mother would be fine, she said. The next morning, when I came down for breakfast, there was Mother making porridge at the Findlay Oval. She was whistling, as she often did while working around the kitchen. What had caused her sadness the night before? Whatever it was, she had tucked it away and taken on another day on the farm which had become her home after many years of
living in a big city. Little did I know that it would be decades before I would know what Mother would write in her diaries ... words of joy, words of gratitude, but often words of sadness would fill the pages. DANUBE MEANDERS THROUGH 10 EUROPEAN NATIONS JEFF MAGUIRE WRITES ABOUT A VISIT TO THE PICTURESQUE OLD TOWN OF ULM JEFF MAGUIRE Column
There is something about the Danube River that makes it a favourite sightseeing stop for people touring Europe. Given the early onset of winter here I must admit that thinking about an afternoon stroll along the "Blue Danube" is particularly uplifting! The river isn't hard to find. The Danube flows for 2,850 kilometres (1,770 miles) and meanders through 10 countries, more than any other river in the world. The source of
the Danube River is located in the small German city of Donaueschingen, just north of the border with Switzerland. Kathleen and I have visited Donaueschingen during our time in Germany. It is a picturesque place set in a valley among the low mountains of the southern Black Forest. In the company of our good friends and longtime travel companions Frank and Wendy LeBlanc, we drove to Donaueschingen on a Saturday. The town's market is a bustling place which we thoroughly enjoyed touring. The main reason for our visit was to see the source of the Danube. Unfortunately the actual viewing site, located on the grounds of the local palace, was undergoing renovations and was offlimits to visitors at the time. However it is a major tourist attraction and signage directed us to the
local museum where a "temporary source" had been set up. This has become an "injoke" with the four of us. We laugh every time we think about it. Because the "source of the Danube" was actually just a raised display case in the middle of the floor with a viewing port at the centre. Visitors could look through the port and into a rather deep passage resplendent with flashing lights. At the bottom was a blue "water flow" which, temporarily at least, purported to be the river source. With apologies to the good people of Donaueschingen, it was pretty hokey actually! Our visit was in the fall of 2013. Frank and Wendy have been back more recently and they say the newly rebuilt official source of the Danube ("Donau" in German) is looking pretty spiffy these days. cent fall vacation in Germany, France and Switzerland Wendy asked if we would be interested in spending a day and a night in the city of Ulm which is located on the Danube. The city of 125,000 is just over an hour northwest of Munich where we began our excursion in late September. We enthusiastically agreed! Ulm is in the German state of Baden-Wurttemberg. The rivers Blau and Iller are tributaries of the larger Danube which also flow through the city. Most of Ulm, including the picturesque old town, hugs the left bank of the
Danube. On the other side of the Danube is the twin city of Neu-Ulm (population 50,000) which is in the state of Bavaria. The medieval city wall has been rebuilt and runs along the Danube, offering beautiful views along the river and across it to Bavaria. Behind the city wall, in the old town, are some wonderfully rebuilt half-timbered buildings which are a hallmark of Germany. Sadly an Allied bombing raid in December 1944 resulted in the destruction of 80 per cent of the medieval city centre. Some buildings were painstakingly restored al-
