"A place to grow," said Bruce Williamson, chuckling, as he helped heap earth onto the new tree he was helping to plant in Stewart Park on April 22, appropriating Ontario's new license plate slogan in a green way. He was alluding to the new Ontario licence plate slogan, soon to replace "Yours to Discover," as he and other marchers ended off the fourth annual P'Earth Day Parade that day, in a sunny but soggy park. "Last year, we were saying goodbye to Jessie, the old silver maple tree," that had to be cut down in the park, said parade leader Anita Payne. There was a new tree planted in "Jessie's" place last year, and marchers last year took "the energy from the See PERTH, page 30

A BITTERSWEET MAPLE SEASON CENTURY MAPLE TOOK HOME THE GRAND CHAMPION EXHIBITOR AWARD PRESENTED AT THE 43RD ANNUAL FESTIVAL OF THE MAPLES IN PERTH EVELYN HARFORD ehar ford@metroland.com This year's maple season was bittersweet for Erwin Paul and Janet Douglass, owners of Century Maple, a fifth generation maple syrup operation in McDonald's Corners. Erwin's mother, Thelma Paul, passed away at the age of 76 when she collapsed while working in the sugar bush at the end of last year's maple season. "She passed away doing what she loved to do," said Erwin, who was by his mother's side in the sugar bush when she died. "It was better for her than the rest of us. It's been a tough year." The husband and wife duo, Erwin and Janet, said they worked this year's season in Thelma's honour. And, it seems to have paid off. Century Maple took home the top award - the Grand Champion Exhibi-

Evelyn Harford/Metroland Erwin Paul and Janet Douglass of Century Maple won the Grand Champion Exhibitor Award, presented by the Lanark & District Maple Syrup Producers Association, at the 43rd annual Festival of the Maples held in Perth on Saturday, April 27, 2019. tor Award - presented by the Lanark & District Maple Syrup Producers Association at the 43rd annual Festival of the Maples in Perth on Saturday, April 27. The couple dedicated the award to Thelma. Thelma and her husband Delmer had, in previous years, won the grand prize a number of times. Now Erwin and Janet are continuing in their footsteps. The couple still sticks to the traditional method of boiling sap with a wood-fired evaporator - something fewer and fewer people are doing these days. "I'm pretty proud to keep the family tradition going," said Erwin. Thelma was the backbone of Century Maple and a fixture in the local com-

munity. She was named Lanark Highland's Citizen of the Year posthumously in 2018. Among many other things, Thelma was known to make a mean maple butter, which she won first place for at last year's Festival of the Maples - just two days before her death. "She's dearly missed," said Janet, her daughterin-law. Century Maple was one of 170 vendors at the Festival of the Maples on Saturday. And, despite the rain and snow, around 15,000 people filled the streets of Perth to enjoy the sweet, sweet smells, sounds and tastes of maple season. Smoke Alarms

for People who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing FACT Home fire sprinklers keep fires small. This gives people more time to escape in a fire. AND DON’T FORGET… Test all smoke alarms at least once a month using the test button.

Working smoke alarms save lives. However, people who are deaf or hard of hearing may not be able to depend on the traditional smoke alarm to alert them to a fire.

Install smoke alarms in every bedroom. They should also be outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home. For added safety, interconnect all the smoke alarms. If one sounds, they all sound. This gives people more time to escape.

people who are deaf or hard of hearing. • Strobe lights flash when the smoke alarm sounds. The lights warn people of a possible fire. • When people who are deaf are asleep, a pillow or bed shaker can wake them so they can escape. The shaker is activated by the sound of a smoke alarm. • When people who are hard of hearing are asleep, an alert device that uses a loud, mixed, lowpitched sound can wake them. They may find a pillow or bed shaker helpful. These devices are triggered by the sound of the smoke alarm. • Research the products and select the ones that best meet your needs.

'GRAB YOUR COFFEE TO GO AND SAY HELLO': OPP RETURNS TO DOWNTOWN PERTH FOOT PATROLS WITH RETURN OF SPRING DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@ metroland.com Officers, take up thy coffee and walk. "We have increased our foot patrol hours ... walking around downtown," said OPP Staff Sgt. Marc Hemmerick, during the Perth police services board (PSB) meeting in the town council chambers on Wednesday, April 17. "We are out there." Hemmerick added that when officers "popping our heads in" to local businesses, that some shoppers "give us strange looks, wondering why we are shopping on duty," he said, when, in reality, they are simply chatting with shop owners. The OPP were commended by the board for being seen to be eating at local restaurants like Café Hideaway on Foster

Street. "I see them," said Hemmerick of his fellow officers, who advises them to, after eating, "grab your coffee to go and say hello ... don't let that breakfast sit in your gut." There are also more evening and weekend patrols planned, he added. Deputy Mayor Ed McPherson wondered if the patrols could deal with the "fun group that lives on our band shell," behind town hall, he said.

FINANCES Former deputy mayor John Gemmell, now a member of the PSB, said it would be "interesting," to see what cutbacks the provincial government may bring to the OPP. "The purse strings have already started to tighten," said Hemmerick. "They are trying to do everything they can do administratively," before offi-

cers are affected. Some of the ways in which the OPP are looking to save costs is by only getting gas at stations where they get a corporate discount, and by cutting down on idling cars.

FAREWELL CLEMENT John Clement, the provincial government's appointee to the PSB, announced that he would be resigning effective May 1, after six years on the board. With town council's decision to reduce the membership of the board from five to three, Clement decided that he would step aside. He was honoured with a plaque for his service by Deputy Mayor Ed McPherson, on behalf of Mayor John Fenik. "I have enjoyed this police services board for six years," said Clement. "I've really learned a lot."

He was glad that, during his six years, that the Lanark County Situation Table came to life, thanks in part to the Perth PSB. He commended Situation Table chairperson Stephanie Gray and Lanark County OPP detachment commander Insp. Derek Needham, who both "took the bull by the horns ... and really followed through," after hearing about the idea at a conference in Toronto. Clement said he was also happy that there were now two mental health nurses seconded to the OPP detachment, through Lanark County Mental Health, "which helps the police officers," and he commended the nurses for doing "a phenomenal job." McPherson said that Clement, the former publisher of The Perth Courier, was someone who "put their heart and soul into everything."

SENATOR CALLS FOR CHARGES LAW AGAINST FENTANYL DEALERS WHOSE DRUGS CAUSE DEATH DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@ metroland.com Sen. Vern White would like to see laws changed to allow fentanyl dealers and producers charged with attempted murder. "We need legislation that allows us to start charging people," said the Conservative senator, and Ottawa's former police chief, during a speech in Carleton Place on April 26. "If they're selling fentanyl, and 13 people died yesterday, (we need to be able to charge them) with attempted murder today. That's where we need to get to." White was speaking at the Ontario Association of Police Services Boards' Zone 2 meeting at the Carleton Place arena, and was asked why drug dealers would want to produce

drugs that would kill their customers. "They don't really care that you die (as a customer), they've got someone else behind you," said White. "It still doesn't make sense that they're killing their client group, but the money is just too much. It's too great an opportunity for them to miss." Part of the allure of fentanyl for criminals come from the large profit margins to be made. "On the dark web, I can order all of the ingredients for about $7,000 to build a kilo of fentanyl, pure fentanyl," said White. "With one kilo of pure fentanyl, I can make about $4 million in fake Oxycodone 80s ... There has never been a drug in the world that has a markup like fentanyl does." Very often, fentanyl is mixed in with other drugs,

like cocaine. By adding fentanyl to a cocaine mix, it will "increase the value of that cocaine, because it's giving them (the user) a greater high." And there are new versions of the opioid popping up locally. White explained that fentanyl is 100 times more powerful than morphine, while carfentanil is 100 times more powerful than fentanyl. "It's horse tranquilizer really," he said. The drug has a very high cost in terms of lives lost to overdoses. "(We have) 13 people dying a day in this country from accidental opioid overdose ... 13 a day. We'll top 14,000 people this year," with 65,000 meeting a similar fate south of the border, said White. "It's not just us. But it's just us when we're not doing anything about it."

MPP HILLIER TO VOTE AGAINST 2019 BUDGET Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston MPP Randy Hillier has announced that he will be voting against the 2019 Ontario budget. The budget was delivered by Finance Minister Vic Fideli on Thursday, April 11, and a day later, in an exclusive interview with The Perth Courier, Hillier said he was undecided as whether he would vote for or against the budget. Four days later, after promising to comb through the document's 343 pages, "I can now safely say on further examination that I will be voting against the Ford budget." He said last Friday that the "devil was in the details," and he appeared to find just such a devil buried in the pages, namely, schedule 17. Hillier said that that part of the budget "removes a keystone of democracy as it unduly prohibits people from suing the government for injurious actions." He charged that the proposal is something that he would expect to see "from an authoritarian regime, not a representative democracy built on the foundation that neither prince nor pauper is ever above nor beneath the law." He noted that he has seen constituents "harmed" by government actions, but "thankfully they always had an avenue through the courts to be compensated."

STEWART PARK FESTIVAL HOSTS COFFEE HOUSE FOR YOUNG MUSICIANS Young musicians from across the region are invited to play in the Stewart Park Festival Youth Coffeehouse, where they can compete for a chance to perform at the award-winning festival this summer. The coffee house is an invitation to all youth musicians living within Lanark County and Rideau Lakes. The coffee house concert gives youth - ages 14 to 21 years of age - the chance to perform in front of a live audience while auditioning for a spot at the Festival's Youth Showcase on Friday, July 19, 2019. The coffee house will al-

low each performer to perform two songs in a set and the winning performance will earn $300, as well as a set on the Stewart Park Festival stage this summer with a paid honorarium. The coffee house is a new approach from the original youth coffee house design, which welcomed school-designated musicians from across the region to compete and represent their school. The shift this year for the coffee house is an attempt to bring more musicians to the stage. "We love the style and versatile musical offerings our local youth have brought to the stage in the past, and we wanted to open it up to the greater public to give more youth more opportunities to perform," says John McKenty, chair of the Stewart Park Festival committee. Past performers have ranged from solo acts to five-piece bands. "We're really interested

to see a variety of musical acts from across the region," says James Keelaghan, music director with the Stewart Park Festival committee. "We can't wait to see what our entrants bring to the stage and show how much musical talent comes to the stage from our youth." Once the coffee house performers are finished, a group of judges will name the winner, who will receive the monetary prize and a chance to perform at the Stewart Park Festival. The event will take place at the Perth Tea Room on Gore Street on Wednesday, May 22, 2019 at 7 p.m. The public is welcome to attend and admission is free. RED CROSS OFFERS HELP FOR FLOOD VICTIMS Recent heavy rains across the province have swollen lakes and rivers in several watersheds and resulted in water ponding and flooding on many properties. Flooded areas are causing citizens to sandbag against rising waters on some properties across Lanark Leeds Grenville. Lanark, Carleton Place, Beckwith and Drummond/ North Elmsley residents in particular, have been dealing with the effects of rising waters over the past week or so, and efforts to sandbag properties has been ongoing. If you are experiencing floods to your properties, please keep in mind some safety precautions for drinking water. The Leeds Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit offers some advice. Flood water and water ponding around wells and septic systems can have adverse effects on the safety of your drinking water and how your septic system works. The Leeds Grenville and Lanark Health Unit is advising those whose wells are directly affected by these conditions to boil their water for one minute at a rolling boil before drinking the water. Have your well water tested for bacteria. If your septic system has been affected, limit water usage by taking quick showers rather than baths, avoid using the dishwasher, garbage disposal and washing machine and flush your toilets only when necessary. Ensure your basement sump pump is not going into the septic system. Do not pump out your septic tank when the soil around the tank or the leaching bed is still saturated with water. High ground water levels may cause an empty septic tank to float and break out of the ground, and damage the tank and connecting plumbing. Helpful tips: • Keep your family safe by keeping family members and pets away from and out of the flood water; • DO NOT enter areas where electrical systems have been affected by flood water as you may be electrocuted; • Building materials, clothing and furniture exposed to flood waters are likely contaminated with sewage and can support the growth of mould. • Ask for professional advice during clean up. The Red Cross is supporting relief operations in the Ottawa area and has launched an appeal for people impacted by the flooding. At the request of several municipalities, the Red Cross is providing a variety of services for affected households, on a case-by-base assessment basis of immediate needs. If you have been affected by flooding in Ontario, please call the Canadian Red Cross at 1-800-863-6582, Monday to Sunday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. EST.

PERTH BIA REVIVES COMMITTEE TO LOOK AT MAKING TAY BASIN A 'FOCAL POINT' DOWNTOWN DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@metroland.com A newly restored business committee is looking to revitalize the Tay Basin. Coun. Judy Brown, who is Perth town council's representative on the board of the Downtown Heritage Perth Business Improvement Area (BIA), told town council on Tuesday, April 16, that, at the BIA's April 2 meeting, it had been decided to revive a committee looking at how to make the Tay Basin "a focal point for the downtown," she said. In a later interview with The Perth Courier, Brown noted that accountant Howard Allen put forward the idea of reviving the committee, after he returned from Detroit, where he saw renovation work being done in America's Motor City's downtown core.

9 | The Perth Courier | Thursday, May 2, 2019

NEWS "He talked about some of the attractions in the downtown area," she recalled. While Perth is not a major American city, some of the ideas that may work here could include "a small ice rink, upgrades to the Crystal Palace, adding heating to it," she said, as well as possibly adding chess tables in the area. When it comes to the Crystal Palace building itself though, it may look very different in future. "It would be a choice of upgrading what is there or doing something new," said Brown. The 2019 town budget identified several long-term projects that needed to be addressed around town, with the Crystal Palace being one of those items. During the election, Brown said that voters told her that "they would like to see more recreation facilities in town," she said. Adding another ice surface could be one way of filling that need. She noted that "almost all of our infrastructure was built in the 1960s," and may be nearing the end of its useful life. The town's community services director, Shannon Baillon, was part of the initial committee that met last year, but, in a telephone interview on Wednesday, April 17, Baillon said she was not sure if the reinvigorated committee would be a committee of council or something more informal. Baillon said she is "just starting the recreation master plan," but that ideas like the ice rink and chess tables would be consistent with the direction of the plan.

FOSTERING ORGAN DONOR AWARENESS ADRIANNA'S ARMY IS BUSTING OUT LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com There's an army behind Adrianna Foster, and like any good general, she's leading a charge to save lives. It doesn't matter that this 21year-old from the Perth area just had her second heart transplant - she's out in full force, guns blazing. Adrianna's Army has been instrumental in creating organ donor awareness since its inception by her best friend Brandy Varcoe in 2017. What started as a fundraiser (that has since been closed), has become a full-blown campaign to create awareness and ultimately, register organ donors across Canada. Her recent heart transplant - the second in 19 and a half years - happened just two weeks ago at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. She was called April 7 about an available heart, which she accepted. She received the transplant at midnight. Two weeks later, she spoke with The Perth Courier about the process, and how she is feeling since leaving the hospital. "It's pretty crazy. It's like a whole new body. I feel like I'm having quality of life now," she said, her once raspy and breathy voice finding its strength once again. "From what we've learned about my old heart, from the age of 10, I was probably living with a heart that was struggling." Now that she's feeling like a whole new person, she doesn't understand how others complain. "I just can't get over the big changes," like her diet which was restricted for sodium, water and sugar. She can now "eat anything" she wants, and drink

Foster said she was "surprisingly calm" to get the phone call on April 7 about her new heart. Foster has a service dog, a nine-month-old Cavalier King Charles spaniel named Remington. She said she wants to continue his certified service dog training,

and to help others in the same situation. Remington's been with her along this transplant journey. "He was amazing," she said of his visit to the Ottawa Heart Institute. "He was with me right up until I went with the doctors into the OR (operating room), and then once I was out of ICU (intensive care unit), I had him

with me again."

SINCE THE TRANSPLANT Foster said she's enjoying how her days stretch out in front of her now. "That's a big piece," she said. "Just taking time to breathe and enjoy the day and what it brings, instead of trying to get things done because I wasn't sure if I was

going to make it to the end of the day, or to when my mom (Arlene Foster) got home from work." She did a lot of positive thinking and found many positive quotes which kept her in an optimistic frame of mind, despite having a barely-functioning heart, but her mother has been her biggest support system, as has the whole community. "Everybody is always so supportive," she said. "They want updates, and I felt it really brought the community together. They always asked how they can help. There was such an outpouring from the community it was unreal." These past two years were tough for this young woman as she has lost two good friends, Larissa and Samantha, as well as dealing with her own struggle. "It was hell for quite a long time. I wanted something good to come from it, and now I'm starting to see

the good of all of it. I think that the whole journey has changed me as a person too. And I really think that it was one of the best things for me." She has stayed in contact with both friends' families. "They've supported my journey 110 per cent. Always wanting updates, and they're just so happy for me. It's been nice because I've been able to stay in contact with them."

DONOR FAMILY Foster said she's respectful of, and grateful to, her donor's family. She doesn't know them. "I don't want to cause them any trouble for what they've gone through. I'm just so grateful that they were able to choose organ donation. And I'm grateful to my first family, because they're heart gave me 19 and a half years. Even though the past two years weren't great, I wouldn't have gotten

FOSTERING AWARENESS Adrianna's Army is Foster's legacy. There is lots of swag for purchase, created with Blade Sports in Carleton Place, and made by Prodecal in Perth, including: Sweaters, T-shirts, ball caps, wristbands, and vehicle stickers. It's available in camouflage, because this gal loves her camo; it's her favourite colour. "I built Adrianna's Army strictly on my bad days when I couldn't get out of bed, but I'd be on my phone, or laptop trying to get stuff done," she said. "Because at the time, I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to make it to see what Adrianna's Army would actually become." Talking about organ donation is something to "make people aware that the option is out there ... it's a conversation to get started." She's getting support from Jeff's Windows and Doors in Perth, as well as having her army swag heading into UniglassPlus Ziebart stores across Canada. She's also looking forward to doing a promotional video with Hugh Colton of the Hinton Auto Group, where her items are also for sale at Hinton Dodge Chrysler in Perth. Foster will have a derby car dressed up to recognize organ donation at the Perth Fair this summer. And, if you're looking to donate to Foster's cause, she's chosen the Canadian Transplant Association, "so people can donate in honour of Adrianna's Army. It all goes back to people who have had transplants," she said. "There's a lot of things happening." Watch the Facebook page: Adrianna's Army, or

ORGAN DONATION STATISTICS Adrianna's Army has helped increase the donor statistics from Perth and Rideau Ferry over the past few months since her campaign turned up the heat, Foster said. According to Jennifer Allen - communication adviser at the Trillium Gift of Life Network - when they

There have been 17,916 Ontarians who have received a life-saving organ transplant since 2003. The University of Ottawa Heart Institute has performed, on average, between 15 and 25 transplants per year, noted Lynne Clark, director, donor strategy, integration and marketing, at the heart institute foundation.

"The numbers fluctuate and reflect the availability of donor hearts, not necessarily the numbers in need,"

she said. "Improved awareness of organ donations and increased registrations is sure to help."

STORY BEHIND THE STORY

Adrianna Foster has been living in heart failure most of her young life. She recently had a second heart transplant, and has formed a group to raise awareness about organ donation. Through Adrianna's Army, more people are signing up to become organ donors according to stats from the Trillium Gift of Life Network. But more needs to be done, as there are many people who are not yet donors. Foster is taking the challenge to heart, by spreading awareness about the importance of organ donation.

• One organ and tissue donor can improve life for up to 75 people and save up to eight people; • Every three minutes someone waiting for an organ transplant dies; • Over 1,600 Canadians are added to the wait list yearly; • A 90 per cent majority of Canadians are in favour of organ and tissue donation, but less than 20 per cent have made plans to donate; • Everyone has the potential to be an organ donor/or tissue donor regardless of age or health. began reporting registration rate by community in 2011, in Perth the rate was 24 per cent. As of April 25, 2019, there are 55 people in Ontario waiting for a heart transplant. In 2018, there were 73 heart transplants in Ontario. "Heart transplant patients waited, on average, fewer days than ever before in 2018," Allen said, "experiencing a 42 per cent decrease in the average wait time in one year alone (from 214 days in 2017, to 120 days in 2018)." In Ontario, the average number of organ donors is 36 per cent, but Rideau Lakes, Perth and Smiths Falls are above that provincial average. Of the 33,153 health card holders in the Rideau Lakes area, 46 per cent of them, or 15,226, are registered as a donor. There were 1,002 registrations last year, and so far, this year, 109 people have registered. In Perth, the donor registration rate is 47 per cent, meaning 6,501 people are donors out of 13,988 who have health cards. In Smiths Falls, that number is 39 per cent for donor registrations: 5,820 registered donors out of 14,856 health card owners. Ontario rankings see North Bay as the No. 1 registered for organ donation at 57 per cent. Perth is ranked 59; Rideau Lakes 69, and Smiths Falls 130. ERTH COULD HANDLE 2,500 EARTHQUAKE EVACUEES IF NEEDED DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@ metroland.com If Belleville ever gets hit by an earthquake, Perth will be ready to help house the survivors - as many as 2,500 of them. On Thursday, April 11, the army came to town, but not for an emergency - but to plan in case there ever is one. The town hosted an emergency management workshop that day, which had been initiated by an email from members of the military who were taking part in a civil-military cooperation course at Canadian Forces Base Kingston, according to an email from town hall's chief administrative officer, Ron Ladd. The "Emergency Management Workshop" not only

included a contingent of soldiers, but also members of the OPP, the health unit, Lanark County social services, Lanark County ambulance service, and administration from the Perth and Smiths Falls District Health Unit, as well as the town's emergency management program committee and the community control group. "The subject of the exercise was a mass evacuation of people, on foot, toward the town of Perth, caused by a massive earthquake striking Belleville," wrote Ladd. "The objectives were to demonstrate Perth's capacity for accommodating an influx of evacuees during an emergency, identify the sources of limits to our capacity, and distinguish the resources required to increase that capacity." Deputy Mayor Ed Mc-

Pherson was on hand in his capacity as the head of the ambulance service, and one of the biggest problems that the town would face, apart from accommodation, would be "how many people could we provide water to on a daily or weekly basis," above and beyond the regular demand, said McPherson, after the town council meeting on April 16. (McPherson was sitting in the mayor's office as he had chaired the meeting in the absence of Mayor John Fenik.) One item that Perth would need in such an emergency would be a reception centre, after which the evacuees could then "be placed," in the community, said McPherson. The centre would also be important "so people don't get lost in the shuffle," he said.

BBBS GOLF SUPPORTS MENTORING PROGRAMS Mapleview Golf Club will be the location for the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lanark County (BBBSLC) annual Golf Tournament on Saturday, May 25. The tournament will raise funds for local agency mentoring programs. Once again, 3M Perth is the title sponsor, supporting BBBSLC and their goal of ensuring that "every child in Lanark County that needs a mentor has a mentor." Mentoring programs are about prevention and building resilience. Research indicates that by providing children and youth with positive role models, mentoring programs demonstrate to them that they are valued and that they possess the strength to overcome the obstacles they will undoubtedly face as they grow older. Mentoring also plays an important role in the future direction a child

will decide to take later on in life, paving the way to a future full of possibilities. The Boston Consulting Group research shows that for every $1 invested in BBBS mentoring programs, $18 is returned to society. Children who have been in mentoring programs - referred to as "Littles" - see real, positive change. The children involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters go on to graduate from high school at a rate of 20 per cent higher than the national average; 78 per cent of those children who came from a social assistance background no longer rely on this form of income and a disproportionately high number of former Littles graduate from college or university compared to others in their age group. On the other hand, children who are denied the benefit of a positive role model are children who will continue to be deemed "at risk" and not children

"on the brink of success." Supporting Big Brothers Big Sisters Lanark County can have big results and it can be as simple as a fun day on the links! The fun-filled day is a shotgun start and the $90 registration fee includes a continental breakfast, barbecue lunch, a cart, and 18 holes. Register early and you can save $5. There is a chance to bid on the silent auction tables with many great finds, generously donated by local area businesses. Registration details can be found on the agency's website - www.bigbrothersbigsisterslanark.ca. Sponsorships help increase the bottom line for the agency and there are many options available, including hole sponsors, food sponsors and more. Sponsoring this event provides great visibility for local businesses and great support for an agency helping kids right here at home.

PERTH BOY CARRIES TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS FLAG AT PLAYOFF GAME LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com It was a bittersweet ending for the Toronto Maple Leafs Sunday afternoon in Toronto as they were defeated by the Boston Bruins 4-2 to tie their NHL playoff series at three games each. But it was a 10-out-of-10 for a 10-year-old Perth boy, who was a flag bearer for

the Leafs at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto on Sunday, April 21. "It was pretty exciting," Jaden White said. His mom, Angie, had entered her son's name into the Scotiabank Skaters Contest, and as luck would have it, Jaden's name was chosen for flag bearer duties for Game 6 of the playoff series between the Leafs and the Boston Bruins.

Angie White/Submitted Jaden White of Perth was chosen as a flag bearer for the Toronto Maple Leafs for the April 21 playoff Game 6 against the Boston Bruins.

The Scotiabank Skaters Contest gives youth the opportunity for a once in lifetime experience to stand alongside their hockey heroes, either in the NHL or minor league level. "When she told me I didn't believe her," Jaden said with a grin, as he peered out from under the brim of his new TML hat. A big Toronto Maple Leafs' fan, especially of Auston Matthews, Jaden even wears his idol's No. 34 on his own hockey jersey. The right winger for the Atom Wings did a fist bump with the NHL superstar who was heading to the ice. He also caught the eye and shoulder tap of Boston's Brad Marchand, which was filmed on Coach's Corner with Don Cherry. "That was a highlight for sure," said Rick, who along with Angie and their daughter Haley, all made the trip to Toronto. The family met Darryl Sittler who signed a couple jerseys for them. Jaden said he wasn't nervous to carry the flag. "I was afraid that I was going to trip on the flag though ... it's pretty big." The young lad did a couple practice rounds;

the first on Wednesday, April 17. The family went down again early on game day for a second practise at 11 a.m. on Saturday. And since the game started at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jaden had to be at the rink at 2 p.m. to get ready for the big event. The family was given four game tickets, and $100 spending money, along

all wanted photos with him. "I felt like I was famous," he laughed. Jaden said his Grade 5 classmates at St. John Catholic Elementary School in Perth, were also excited for him. Besides hockey, he also enjoys golf, and "maybe one day," he said, he'll be playing for the Leafs. The Leafs were eventually defeated from this round of playoffs on Tuesday, April 23, when Boston won Game 7, 5-1.

with three passes to the Hockey Hall of Fame. Scotiabank "really did it up," Rick said. "They treated us like royalty." On the way home from the game, the family took GO Transit from the arena to Oshawa and people on board were asking about Jaden's experience at the game. Once they found out he was a flag bearer, they

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MAGIC AT ST. JOHN Hailed as one of the most successful professional magicians in Canada, Ted and Marion Outerbridge are set to bring his performance on stage to Perth at St. John Catholic High School on Friday, May 3. A professionally orchestrated theatrical production with over 20 customdesigned illusions, OUTERBRIDGE - Pure Illusion is a high-energy magical adventure for both adult and family audiences. Recognized as one of the most creative and dynamic shows of its kind, critics have hailed Ted and Marion Outerbridge as "the most successful magicians in Canada" and "champions of magic." As the largest and most successful touring illusion show in the country, it has received both the Award of Excellence from Ontario Contact and the Touring Artist of the Year award from the B.C. Touring Council. The show will act as a fundraiser for the St. John

Elementary School Parent Council who will use the money toward eco-friendly initiatives including a new water station and the kindergarten forest program. "We're excited to bring a show that'll be great for the whole family," says St. John Elementary School Principal Shawn Retty. "It's a win-win as we can enjoy a night of magic while also raising funds for important initiatives within our school." OUTERBRIDGE SHOW OUTERBRIDGE - Pure Illusion takes its audience on a bizarre and fascinating journey through time. Within seconds of taking the stage, the Outerbridges fuse their revolutionary illusions with split-second artistry to hold viewers spellbound. With the help of an elaborate Victorian time machine, the performers and spectators travel back in time together. Keeping their audience enthralled from the first astonishing illusion to the spectacular finale, the Outerbridges create an experi-

ence that far exceeds the expectations of every spectator. Ted Outerbridge says he's looking forward to bringing the show to Perth - especially since they're new to the area. "We just moved to Smiths Falls from Montreal last December, and we're loving it," says Outerbridge. BIRTH

PERSAUD, Dr. Bhisma Pitama

“Satnarine” It is with sadness the family announces the death, from an unexpected illness of Dr. B. P. Persaud (Sat), in Hospice Renfrew on Tuesday 23rd April. A proud graduate of the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland. He practiced in Banbridge Northern Ireland, and Guyana before settling in Arnprior where for 50 years he cared for many generations of patients from first breath to last. For 17 years he was Director of Bonnechere Manor in Renfrew. Medicine was his life and priority. His ethics and kind commitment was inspirational to many. His relational with the nursing staff at the Arnprior Hospital was an excellent one. Especially the OR staff for when he cooked delicious food for special occasions, on days he was assisting. When away from his medicine he was found relaxing on the golf course working towards his eleventh hole in one. 10 holes in 1 was good but 11 would have been better. He was an avid reader and consummate artist. He enjoyed traveling to the Soviet Union and Scandinavia in the 70s, African Safaris, South American rain forest, as a member of Remote Area Medical Corp. to bring medicine to the indigenous people; Bali, Sepang and other parts of Asia. His family Danesh (Toronto), Devan and Mirko (Arnprior), Rohan and Etsuko, Ellie and George (Sydney Australia) Aran and Felicio, Sophie and Hannah (Seoul, South Korea) Thara and Graeme, Norah, Holly and Saoirse (Dublin Ireland). Must continue on their life’s journey without him. We would like to express our deep-felt gratitude to Dr. Neilson, the nurses and volunteers at the Hospice for the compassionate care they gave to our loved one during the last days of his life. Dr. Persaud’s final care has been entrusted to the Pilon Family Funeral Home and Chapel Ltd., 50 John Street North, Arnprior where visitation took place on Friday evening, April 26th from 7 to 9 p.m. and again on Saturday morning, April 27th from 9:45 to 10:45. A Tribute to Dr. Persaud followed in the Pilon Family Chapel at 11 a.m. For those who wish to honour his work and memory support for Families de la Esperance Puerta Vallarta. HAYES, Phil

(Retired Manager, The Beer Store) In the late evening of Thursday, April 18, 2019 in the ICU at the Queensway Carleton Hospital after a brief but sudden illness, Phil left this world with his devoted wife Gayle curled up beside him; his adoring daughter Paula’s cheek pressed up against his; his caring sonin-law Stephen Cherry and his loving grandson Chad, the light of his life, sitting at his bedside. The hockey match was playing in the background. The son of the late Frank Hayes & Eveline Daze and son-in-law of the late Jean Brandimore of Arnprior, Phil leaves behind his brother Brian (Gail), his loving sister Helen (late Lyle Ross) and Sandra Elliott along with his sisters and brothers-in-law Beryl and Bruce Campbell, Shirley and her husband (and Phil’s best friend) Johnnie Kelly, Heather Campbell (late Phil Brandimore). He will be missed by his many adoring nieces and nephews. Phil gave us everything that his body could give us in its final hours. He is finally free of the pain of the cluster headaches he endured for over 20 years and is breathing effortlessly. We know that his best pal “Honey” is curled up at his feet as he chats with those that have went before him. Thank you to Dr. Iyengar and the ICU Critical Care Team for their incredible medical expertise and compassion. Phil’s final care has been entrusted to the Pilon Family Funeral Home and Chapel Ltd., 50 John Street North, Arnprior where visitation was held on Sunday afternoon, April 28 from 2 to 5 p.m. and again on Monday, April 29 from 11 to 11:40 a.m. A Tribute to Phil took place in the Pilon Family Chapel at 12 o’clock. Luncheon followed. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you make donations in Phil’s memory to the charities that were near and dear to his heart: the MS Society of Canada or The Canadian Guild Dogs for the Blind. HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY, HIGH SCHOOL UNITE FOR PLANT SALE LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com The Rideau Lakes Horticultural Society is making several changes to its annual plant sale, May 25. First, the society is doing the sale jointly with Rideau District High School's Greenhouse Club. Society volunteers have been working with some Grade 7 and 8 students to populate the school's greenhouse with every kind of seedling under the sun (literally), thanks to donated seeds from West Coast Seeds. Proceeds from the sale of these seedlings will go toward refurbishing the greenhouse and expanding horticultural programs at the School. Second, acting on a suggestion from a member, the society encourages anyone in the community who has plants or other horticulture-related products to sell, to have a table at the sale. The idea is that sale patrons will be able to talk directly to the person whose plants or products they're purchasing, and take their time foraging among the various tables for those special finds.

The society will also still accept donations of plants and gently used garden items to be sold anonymously by society volunteers. But it hopes local gardeners and others will buddy up to offer a selection of plants and merchandise to sale patrons. As a prospective vendor, you'll need a bit of a cash float for making change and pay $15 to become a society member (for insurance purposes). The society also asks that, since this sale is its main fundraiser, that you consider, if possible, contributing some of your proceeds to the society at the close of the sale. Seedling plants are, of course, the most popular items. However, you can offer and find perennials, house plants, bushes and even small trees. Dan Savage will be on hand once again with his brilliant selection of day lilies, irises and hostas. The society also encourages people to bring or donate bulbs and seeds. Artisans with ceramic or metal pots, and garden accessories made of metal and glass are also very welcome. There will also be a silent

auction of new and gently used garden items or supplies donated by local commercial outfits. You can preregister to reserve a table by contacting Marsha Ferguson at 613-273-8557 or marferg@aol.com, or just show up at the school between 8 and 8:30 a.m. the morning of the sale. If you still want to do an anonymous donation and need help getting your items to the sale, contact Virginia Bourget at 613-4891122 or vbourget@hotmail.com. Virginia will arrange to provide pots, help you dig and pot up plants, or pick things up and get them to the sale. If you're able to drop off your donations yourself, the society will have volunteers at the school on Friday, May 24 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. to receive your items. If you have silent auction items you wish to donate, please contact Yvonne Helwig at 613-272-2877 or yhelwig@kingston.net. The new and improved Rideau Lakes Horticultural Society Plant and Garden Sale will take place at the Rideau District High School, 251 Main St., Elgin on Saturday, May 25, from 9 a.m. till noon. The society is 50 years old this year and they're kicking off their celebrations with a whole new bag.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

This year's march started from the band shell behind Perth town hall, down Gore Stree East to Foster Street, across Foster Street, down past the Big Ben statue, and into Stewart Park. On this Earth Day, Payne said that she gave thanks to the earth "for providing us with all the things we need to live." That is why she said she was changing her last name from Anita Payne to Anita Payne De Gaia, "in honour of the earth."
