Andrew Kravchenko has been sentenced to close to eight-and-a-half years in jail after pleading guilty to the death of James “Jake” Laverdure, 45, at Last Duel Park. Laverdure died on Aug. 7, 2016. Kravchenko, now 23, pled guilty to a charge of manslaughter at the Perth court on Friday, Dec. 22, 2017. He had originally been charged with second-degree murder during his arrest on Dec. 18, 2016. He was sentenced to 3,110 days in jail but was credited with time already served in pre-sentence custody. He was also given a weapons prohibition and a sample of his DNA was taken. During the December hearing, when asked by the judge if he had anything to say, Kravchenko did apologize to Laverdure’s family and loved ones. Preliminary hearing Kravchenko’s preliminary hearing was held on Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2017 before Justice Peter Wright. Lawyer Jeffrey Langevin of Langevin Morris Smith LLP in Ottawa represented Kravchenko. The Crown attorney was Julie Scott. The only witness called during that hearing was OPP Det. Const. Tom Kohls, who arrested Kravchenko, and was the lead investigator on the case. Scott told the court that Kohls, along with another officer, made his way to the home Kravchenko shared with his girlfriend on Dec. 17, 2016.
