Transport minister’s letter on Highway 7 angers Perth council
Cherished fan is honoured Before the singing of the anthem during the Perth Blue Wings/Arnprior Packers CCHL2 game on Friday, Feb. 9, the Blue Wings paid tribute to a longtime fan, and community supporter, Nancy McTavish, who died Feb. 5 in Perth. Her son Ron McTavish bows his head just prior to his rendition of O’Canada. Perth went on to win this game, 6-0. More on the Perth Blue Wings inside.

A letter from Ontario’s former transport minister about Highway 7 has caused an angry backlash at Perth town council. “I’m very disappointed in Minister (Steven) Del Duca,” said Coun. Ed McPherson, during Perth town council’s committee of the whole meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 6. “It is a stupid response,” he said of Del Duca’s letter, dated Jan. 16, which was addressed to Mayor John Fenik, but which was shared with council. McPherson has long been a proponent for an additional eastbound advanced green left-turn lane at the intersection of Drummond and Highway 7. In the letter, Del Duca, (the Liberal MPP for Vaughan), stated that “with the existing condition of the lanes, it would not be safe to have turn lanes in each direction.” Del Duca also poured cold water on the belief that the intersection was a collision black spot. “Ministry staff have also consulted with the Ontario Provincial Police and reviewed the database for collision reports at these two intersections. In the past two years, there has been one eastbound left-turn collision at the intersection of Drummond.” (Since writing the letter, Del Duca has been re-assigned to a new ministry, Minister of Economic Development and Growth. The current transport minister is Kathryn McGarry, the Liberal MPP for Cambridge.)
