Perth town hall is openly disputing the number of collisions being reported on Highway 7 by the provincial transport ministry. Mayor John Fenik still intends to meet with provincial transport minister Kathryn McGarry during the Ontario Good Roads Association (OGRA) conference in Toronto from Feb. 25 to 28, to follow up on a January letter from her predecessor, Steven Del Duca. In the letter, dated Jan. 16, the Vaughan Liberal MPP wrote that “ministry staff have … consulted with the Ontario Provincial Police and reviewed the database for collision reports … in the past two years, there has been one eastbound left-turn collision at the intersection of Drummond,” and Highway 7. “The statistics the ministry has … are different from the statistics we have,” said Fenik, during the Perth town council meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 20. “We want people to be safe up on Highway 7.” During the Perth police services board meeting on Thursday, Feb. 22, chair Coun. Jim Graff said that, by way of comparison, there were about 10 collisions at the nearby intersection of Wilson Street and Highway 7 during a similar two-year period. The OPP, he added, are "working with us to get those statistics,” going back to 2009. Graff said he was frustrated since there are areas in town where there needs to be traffic calming assistance.
