IS IT TIME TO SAY 'SAYONARA' TO PERTH'S JAPANESE SISTER CITY DEAL? DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@metroland.com

EASTER EGG HUNT !

insideottawavalley.com

Should Perth say sayonara to its sister city agreement with Asago, Japan? Perth signed its sister city agreement with the Japanese city, about 80 kilometres west of the ancient capital city of Kyoto, on July 5, 2000, under former mayor Lana March. Since then, Perth has entertained various visiting Japanese delegations, from officials to students, from student exchange programs to celebrating Perth's 200th anniversary in 2016. In the same time, however, Perth has only ever sent over two delegations to Asago. "We are here to share cultural and economic opportunities," through these exchanges, said Mayor John Fenik, speaking at Perth town council's committee of the whole meeting on Tuesday, April 2. While good relations continue, Fenik noted that, with a new council in place, he wondered: "Where are we going with these sisterhood agreements? How do we feel about continuing this agreement?" Perth also has a sister city agreement with its namesake in Scotland. "Our history runs deep with Scotland," said Fenik, and it is closer geographically and culturally than Japan. While our Japanese friends are better able to fundraise for their trips to Canada, on the Canadian end, "it becomes a little more difficult for us to do the same ... It's a long trip to get there." And when the Asago delegation prepares to leave Canada, they invariably ask Fenik, "when will you be visiting us?" Fenik met with Japan's consul general based in Toronto, Takako Ito, on March 20, in his office, and Ito seemed "very keen on having students coming to different communities," in Canada, like Perth. A popular program is for Japanese students to spend six weeks in a Canadian high school to work on their English. "If we are going to continue to be part of that sister town agreement, I need members of council to be behind this," said Fenik. "I'd like people to give it some thought," he said, adding that he would likely bring a motion before the next council meeting.

RESIDENT CONCERNED ABOUT ADDED PROPOSED APARTMENT TRAFFIC ON JOY AVENUE DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@ metroland.com Developer Brent Brownlee has said a community meeting with Joy Avenue residents would be "a good idea," once plans for a proposed apartment building in the area are given the green light. During an appearance before Perth town council's committee of the whole meeting on Tuesday, April 2, Brownlee said that he had spoken to some residents of Joy Avenue about the proposed three-storey, 23-unit building at the intersection of Joy and Kippen Street. "He certainly did not approach me, not that he has to," said Joy Avenue resident Roy van der Mull, dur-

ing a telephone interview on Tuesday, April 9. If offered a chance to talk to Brownlee, van der Mull said "I would definitely take that opportunity to talk," he said. "I'm sure he's a busy man. I like peace and quiet. In an interview with Brownlee later that same afternoon, the former owner of the Metro supermarket in the area said that "once we get an idea of what we have and what we are going to present, that would be a good idea," to have a community meeting with residents, said Brownlee. However, Brownlee cautioned that "we are not anywhere near a sit plan concept yet ... We are very early on as to the whole concept," and added that even the drawings of the design were

Desmond Devoy/Metroland A cyclist, driving north on Joy Avenue, looks to his right, down Kippen Street, where an apartment building is being considered for the southeast corner, on April 10. "rudimentary," at this point. Brownlee and his company are waiting to "get positive feedback from the town," on his request to make the western half of Kippen into a one-way street, with traffic flowing west toward Joy, and the remaining half of Kippen remaining a two-way. There had been a proposal, some years ago, to close Kippen Street entire-

ly, noted Brownlee, by a previous landowner in the area. If the plan does move forward to the site plan stage, then items like traffic studies will come into play something that van der Mull believes to be a problem already in the area. "People are racing from North Street or Peter Street through," said the 10-year resident. "They see Joy Avenue as a race track with

THE ISSUE: A NEW BUILDING IN PERTH WILL LIKELY SEE STREET CHANGES LOCAL IMPACT: RESIDENTS CONCERNED WITH CHANGES TO TRAFFIC FLOW beautiful curves." In his decade living on the street, traffic has "increased," by his estimation, as he sees traffic going by as he walks his dog. "Traffic is definitely an issue," he said. (Both men agree that, if the apartment building is built, and if the new traffic configuration on Kippen is given the green light, pardon the pun, that there will be more traffic going onto Joy.) "Development is important, I agree," said van der Mull. At the same time,

"residents do need to have some input." Another consideration is that children use Joy to walk to the back play field of The Stewart School, and there is also a daycare located on Joy. "The safety of Joy Avenue is in peril," said van der Mull. As his last name suggests, van der Mull moved to Canada from The Hague, The Netherlands in 1977. He has been back four times since then, the last time in 2017, and he has seen the towns in his homeland change. "Talk about development!" he laughed. COUNCIL PRESENTATION During the April 2 Perth council meeting, Marko Cekic, a land use planner with the McIntosh Perry Limited engineering firm, employed by Brownlee, said that making the changes to Kippen would be "crucial" to "make this (proposal) feasible." LANARK HIGHLANDS FAMILY WORKS WITH CHEO, ADVOCATING FOR CHANGES TO LYME DISEASE PROTOCOL 31 Dufferin Street, (Highway 7) Perth

DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@ metroland.com

www.abford.com

Submitted photo Jennifer Wheeler with her son Nicholas, 11. they still did not establish a diagnosis within the hospital," she wrote. Wheeler said Nicholas' diagnosis had been confirmed by four other medical doctors outside of CHEO. If her son had what she considered to be a "perfect" case, she worried "about all the other children who aren't so obvious?" Among the recommendations that she put forward: . Create a patient's ombudsperson to represent patients; . Create a more inclusive policy to make it easier for a Lyme diagnosis to be made; . Allow for more shared decision-making between physician and family/patient; and, . Creating a more consistent Lyme approach. Further to this, "we are proposing that CHEO formulate more extensive policies pertaining to late Lyme - which includes anyone who has been treated for more than three weeks, cases of congenital Lyme, or cases of Lyme that have gone untreated or undiagnosed." In a follow up email on April 12, Wheeler added that current Lyme testing in Canada is "inadequate," and that getting better testing is "critical for establishing any new protocol," rather than having decision making continue to be

based on "inadequate testing," she wrote. CHEO REPLY "We are committed to providing the best care based on the best evidence," said Paddy Moore, a spokesperson for CHEO, during a telephone interview on Thursday, April 11. "We are guided by evidence and our families. It's a balance." Moore said that the meeting between the hospital and the Wheelers could not have come at a more opportune time as they are doing their annual update to their Lyme protocol since "the evidence continues to evolve. We are in the process of an annual review." The information provided by the Wheeler family was included in the hospital's annual Lyme review. "It's something we encourage," said Moore, of family participation. The hospital hopes to have their review done in time for the coming tick season, and Moore noted that large parts of eastern Ontario have "recently become an endemic area" for Lyme. The Wheeler's information, along with data from other sources, "all goes into the evidence that they are weighing," Moore said. "It is in the consolidation process." The hospital plans to meet with the Wheelers "in the near future," said Moore.

A Lanark Highlands Township family is pushing for changes to how the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario handles childhood Lyme disease cases. "We have two choices. We can work with them, or go against them," said Jennifer Wheeler, the mother of Nicholas, 11. "It's much more beneficial for everyone if we work together." Wheeler met with the hospital's chief executive officer, Alex Munter, on Friday, Feb. 15, the chief of staff, Dr. Lindy Samson, and Dr. Chuck Hui, the division head of the infectious diseases department. Wheeler contended during the meeting that the hospital's "current algorithm ... is flawed and misses a large number of patients, causing them not to be able to receive the care that they need. I believe they want to change. They just have to figure out how they can do that," she wrote in a March 5 email. "It goes beyond CHEO," she said in an interview. "They are doing what everyone else is being told to do." Dr. Ralph G. Hawkins, clinical associate professor at the University of Calgary, took part in the meeting via teleconference. "He is treating the cases that everyone else is refusing to treat," said Wheeler. "He is very much a man who follows the rules and the law. He really blew their socks off," she said. While her son is back at school, he is "still fatigued," she said. "It's not something that (has) disappeared." In a Feb. 27 email, Wheeler wrote that "our son has the most black-and-white story of Lyme disease ... and

ONTARIO HEALTH MINISTER AGREES TO MEET WITH WHEELER FAMILY OVER LYME PROPOSALS DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@ metroland.com Ontario Health and Long-Term Care Minister Christine Elliott has agreed to meet with the Wheeler family of Lanark Highlands Township about making changes to Lyme protocols, after questioning from MPP Randy Hillier. The Independent MPP for Lanark-FrontenacKingston, rose at Queen's Park on Wednesday, April 10, to ask the NewmarketAurora MPP, who is also the deputy premier, about meeting with the Wheeler family. Hillier charged in the legislature that "our outdated standards of care are not working," he said. "(The) Ontario health system treats Lyme people in a reprehensible and atrocious manner." He asked if Elliott would

meet with the Wheelers to discuss "a pilot project to reform these outdated attitudes and harmful practices, and help people who are suffering with Lyme disease." Elliott replied that she was "sorry about the trouble that Jennifer and Nicholas (Wheeler) have gone through." (The family has been in talks with the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) in Ottawa, looking to change its Lyme disease protocols.) "Our ministry does take the issue of Lyme disease very seriously," Elliott added. "We are constantly consulting and reviewing areas of risk, including certain geographic areas of the province ... I would be happy to meet with Jennifer and Nicholas and their team to discuss this situation and the pilot project they have in mind."

She added that she and her ministry "are looking for solutions." Hillier commended CHEO chief executive officer Alex Munter for having done "the right thing," in meeting with the family in February, and commended Elliott for agreeing to a meeting herself. He continued that there needed to be "significant reform in how we diagnose and treat Lyme disease," since, under the province's "current standards of care, Nicolas would have continued to suffer." Elliott said that the Wheelers' recommendations can be referred to the provincial "appropriateness" committee which is looking at changes to the health care system. "There is more work to be done, there is no question," said Elliott. "It (Lyme) is an area that is understudied."

A single person who loves to cook can once again make delicious, healthy meals from scratch with the items in the monthly food box. The foundation's Lanark County Vital Signs 2017 report stated as one of the challenges that affordability of fruits and vegetables can be even more challenging for members of the community who live with income security issues as well as significant health problems. This grant will help support individuals and families in our area facing this challenge. As one client stated, "I can now have access to the foods I love, but cannot afford."

are able to provide clients who may benefit with monthly good food boxes of fresh fruit and vegetables. The grant also allows for two holiday hampers per client per year. Although the program has only been running for two months of 14, the feedback has been gratifying. A family with an adult son with an intellectual disability and Type 1 diabetes said they are grateful to receive fresh fruit and vegetables, as they do no have enough money to purchase these items on a regular basis. A family with two school-age children are excited when the box arrives each month. The children greet the co-ordinator at the door to see what is in the box for them - they especially like the fruit!

Sixty per cent of the overall population of Lanark County report that they eat less than five servings of fruit and vegetables daily. Health issues can put an additional financial burden on families and individuals. Food insecurity can prevent one from eating a balanced, nutritious diet, which impacts one's health both physically and emotionally. Through this grant, Health Link co-ordinators

LISTEN TO STUDENTS, DON'T DISMISS THEM Ontario's education minister should have ventured out to talk to students April 4 instead of dispensing a self-serving press release from her ivory tower in Queen's Park. If she had, perhaps she wouldn't have responded to students exercising their rights of expression in such a condescending fashion. If the protesting students across the province were like those in Carleton Place, Smiths Falls and Perth last week, they were well-versed in what the provincial government is planning for the education system. And for the most part they don't like what they see. So good for the students. Instead of wallowing in apathy or self-pity, they organized public rallies to show how seriously concerned they are about proclamations from on high directly affecting their futures. Calling the rallies political 'stunts' and the students 'pawns' of the unions and teachers, as Lisa Thompson and Doug Ford have, is a slap in the face to all those students who took the time to research the issues. And then share their views with a noisy but respectful protest. There was no Yellow Vest car-burning or looting in Ontario. They have a solid case when they argue boosting the class size from 22-28 in non-urban school districts such as Lanark County probably means classes of at least 40 (there are many in the 35 range now). For rural students, the change means less choice when it comes to course selection and the possibility arts and music classes and extracurriculars could be a thing of the past. Then there are the mandatory online courses - certainly easier for city students to take than those where high-speed internet is spotty at best. The cuts to the Ontario Student Assistance Program are also more damaging in rural areas, where students have to move away from home for post-secondary education. No wonder students are upset. The new education vision could even reduce the job opportunities they have at home. The loss of teacher jobs may not have a major impact on the urban economy, but dropping somewhere teaching positions will hurt local small business (and if health care cuts come too, it will be a double whammy). Students are not only defending their education, they are standing up for the local economy and fair play for rural Ontario. It's not the students who are behaving like political pawns. It's those politicians who are using ideology as an excuse not to listen to them.

WHO WE ARE LETTERS & COMMENTARY READER DISPLEASED WITH COUNCIL'S LACK OF INITIATIVE REGARDING AUTISM AWARENESS

our support is all currently on hold. Awareness needs to be made.

DEAR EDITOR, I am writing to tell you that I am incredibly disappointed in the complete lack of awareness made by the Town of Perth in honour of Autism Awareness Month and International Autism Awareness Day. I chose not to be upset by it until I read a large article in the Courier about making April Parkinson's Awareness Month. If the town of Perth is not doing anything to support Autism Awareness Month why are they committing to another awareness for the same month? As a business owner in Perth and a mother of two autistic daughters, I am not impressed. Autism affects 1 in 63 children and

WHEN WAS JESUS CRUCIFIED?

KIM KUHNLE PERTH

DEAR EDITOR, The traditional view of Good Friday crucifixion cannot be maintained because on the day the Passover lambs were being killed, Jesus told the disciples where to prepare that evening's meal. After sunset they ate the meal, walked to the Garden of Gethsemane and prayed for another three hours. A Wednesday crucifixion on the other hand would allow for the three days and nights in the tomb, with a resurrection after sunset Saturday night. On Sunday morning Mary met Jesus at the tomb, but later that day He met two disciples on their way to

Emmaus. These men were all Jews so this Sunday must have been after the end of the seven day Feast of Unleavened Bread because all Jewish males are required to keep the feast for seven days in Jerusalem. A High Sabbath is the first weekly Sabbath after the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread and never on Nisan 15. If the Passover was on a Friday then Jesus entered Jerusalem on Monday Nisan 10, ate the Last Supper on the evening of the Passover, now Nisan 15. He was crucified the following Wednesday and placed in the tomb on the next day, Thursday, the sixth day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread and the day of preparation for the seventh day of the of the feast. The only year that fits with all the facts is 27 CE, 46 years after Herod decreed he would rebuild the temple and the year after Pilate became governor over Judea.

EMPTY BOWLS PERTH CELEBRATES 18 YEARS WITH EVENTS HAPPENING IN APRIL FESTIVAL OF THE MAPLES IS APRIL 27 Come listen to some wonderful music and support Empty Bowls Perth on Saturday, April 13 at 2 p.m. at Code's Mill Atrium. Jazz n' Tonic is a double choir event. Tonic, led by Nicola Oddy of Perth, and Martello Alley Cats (MAC) of Kingston - led by Stephanie Lind of Queen's University - are joining together for a second time, raising money for organizations in their communities. Enjoy the jazz, the folk songs, and songs from around the world, and donate to Empty Bowls Perth when they pass the hat. For 18 years Empty Bowls Perth has been supporting local food security programs by selling handcrafted bowls donated by local potters. The Perth-based project was founded by potter Jackie Seaton. Seaton,

who died in 2013, was a tireless advocate for food security in our community and this spring The Table Community Food Centre will honour Seaton's contribution with the dedication of the Empty Bowls garden and the installation of a handmade bench crafted by Seaton's good friend, David Ambrose. Every spring since 2002, many in our community look forward to seeing, purchasing and filling Empty Bowls. Empty Bowls Perth is part of an international grassroots effort to fight hunger in our communities and unfortunately, there are still many children, youth, adults and seniors in our community who do not have enough to eat. For those new to Empty Bowls, the basic premise is simple: Potters create handcrafted bowls. The community is invited to enjoy a meal of soup and bread in exchange for a cash dona-

CONTRIBUTED tion of $25. Donors keep their bowl as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world, and that food is not just a commodity but a basic right. We hope to see you at the Festival of the Maples on Saturday, April 27 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Empty Bowls booth will be set up outside Riverguild Fine Crafts (51 Gore St. E.). Purchase a bowl and fill it with delicious soup or chili donated by Perth restaurants, along with artisanal bread donated by Barnabe's. If it's too early for soup, enjoy a complimentary coffee from Coutts & Company. As in past years, the beautiful handmade bowls will be available at Foodsmiths in Perth in April, and are also available yearround at the Riverguild Fine Crafts while supplies last. Donations support The Table Community Food Centre, YAK Youth Services, the Food for Thought: Lanark County school nutrition program, and the Lanark Highlands Food Pantry, as well as the Guatemala Stove Project. LCCJP NEEDS $30,000 BY APRIL 30 OR FORESEES SHUTDOWN Time is of the essence for the Lanark County Community Justice Program. The not-for-profit organization that provides restorative justice opportunities to Lanark County youth and adults is faced with possible permanent closure at the end of the month if it doesn't raise $30,000 by April 30. The Board of Directors were hit with this reality after learning that some key grant opportunities didn't come through. This situation required the board of directors to make a decision on how to move forward. "We're faced with a difficult decision," says LCCJP acting Executive Director Linda Rush. "While the program is such a vital component to our justice

system here in Lanark County, we can't continue without this funding support from the community. Once we raise the required funds, we have a clear and sustainable path forward working with our community partners, focusing upon our core program. But without the $30,000, we'll likely have to make the tough decision to stop all programming." Operating in Lanark County for 20 years, Lanark County Community Justice Program's core services involve a court diversion program based on referrals from the OPP, the Town of Smiths Falls Police and from the Crown Attorney's office for both youth and adult offenders. The Ministry of the Attorney General assists with funding for offenders aged

12 to 17 years of age. Each year, about 40 to 50 youth participate in the program and avoid a criminal record as a result of working through a restorative justice exercise that allows all affected parties to speak and be heard. Their court diversion program saves the province, on average, $8,500 per diversion. Their 32 diversions in 2018 therefore saved the province over $250,000. "We're so proud of what has been accomplished with our programs over the past two decades," says Chair Scott Ferguson. "We've had incredible support from a range of organizations, and now we're reaching out to the community for support in order to continue this effective program for youth in our community." To support the 30 in 30 campaign, visit the Lanark County Community Justice website at https:// www.commjustice.org .

PROPOSED APARTMENT CAUSES CONCERNS Continued from page 4

The apartment building would "introduce additional rental units into Perth." The apartments would also be in line with town hall's hopes to "promote densification." They would also promote walkability in that they would be "in proximity to downtown Perth," with an "appealing faรงade," to boot, said Cekic. "I love the idea of the development. Lord knows we need more rental," said Mayor John Fenik. But he did question why traffic from the proposed apartment building was being funnelled onto Joy Avenue, instead of Wilson Street. "How much more traffic am I going to see (on Joy)?" wondered Fenik. "Folks on Joy Avenue are going to say, 'Boy, oh boy.'" Brownlee said that the "apartment building will

bring more traffic than is there today," he said. He also explained that by getting apartment-dweller traffic out onto Joy, "it gets the traffic going around to the lights," at the intersection of Leslie and Wilson. Cekic noted that a traffic study is part of the application process. Another aspect of the new development will be a new parking lot at the north side of the Joy/Kippen intersection for employees of the Metro supermarket nearby (Brownlee used to be the owner of that supermarket.) Brownlee added that he

had reached out and discussed the proposal with residents of Joy Avenue. "The response was that they understand the need for this type of rental accommodation," said Brownlee. Cekic went into greater detail about how the road would be split, explaining that there would be "gateway features," which would "narrow (the) road down." There would also be added signage to make the change of direction clear to motorists. As it is, in his estimation, "the condition of the road is poor. It is minimally used."

STORY BEHIND THE STORY

When developer Brent Brownlee addressed council with plans to build an apartment building on Joy Street, residents raised concerns about the traffic flow. if the apartment building is built, and if the new traffic configuration on Kippen Street is given the green light there will be more traffic going onto Joy Street. Studies and public meetings will air all concerns before moving forward with the project.

A few weeks ago, I wrote about how I was going to attack my patio and release it from the icy grip of winter. Well, here we are, four weeks into spring and three weeks after my proclamation and, as I write this, the task is not quite done. Sigh. Similar to the last time I wrote about this, I was hoping for a helpful forecast. No dice. I didn't even start the task when I last wrote about this because everything was just too darned frozen and the weather was unhelpful. The patio is, essentially, my spare room. It's very versatile. It's an office. It's a dining room. It's a den without a TV. Sometimes it's the tidiest room in the house. Often, in fact. And I've gone without it for long enough. At this time of year, due to the rules of our particular galaxy, the planet isn't tilting

quite the right way for the patio to be able to take advantage of the furtive sun and its feeble spring warmth. As the season marches on, it becomes less shady (hence the umbrella for the table), but that desperately needed heat for melting ice is currently elusive. And what a lot of ice there has been. Most years I rush the season and get busy chopping and "helping" things along. It can be a tiring task, but it gets done in a few hours. My patio isn't overly big. This year? Yeesh. I finally got to it last weekend. I took a "before" picture and posted it online, declaring my intent to get the job done. Despite a few patchy areas where ice had started to melt, I was faced with a layer of a good two inches of ice covering almost half of the space. I smashed away at that with my ice chopper for a while, which is very noisy and quite jarring - it makes my whole body vibrate. Then I resorted to the kettle - pouring boiling water to try to soften things - or at least thin the layer. Part of the trouble was that the edge of the tarp I use to cover the table and some chairs was frozen into the ice. I muttered about this to a friend by text, who cleverly suggested a hammer. Not only was the effort more focused and a bit quieter, but it also seemed like a brilliant way to release my frustration with the never-ending winter.

So I smashed away at the ice with a hammer for a good hour (interspersed with more boiling water), and managed to free most of the tarp and all but one chair before I had to move on to other things, like retrieving a kid from gymnastics and going to the store and making supper and etc. Interestingly, I actually bent the hammer. That ice is solid. (Brute strength over here.) I thought about posting a chronicle of my progress, but since it didn't end with the successful release of the entire patio, I felt a little defeated. The task was not complete. The next day I paid for my efforts. My back was twinging, likely from the chopping, but even more interesting was the fact my right arm (the hammering one) kept falling asleep. And my hand wasn't super keen to hold things like forks or pens. Oh, and let's not forget the giant blister. Yeesh. Apparently I need to practise hammering more often. Maybe not this weekend, though. Hopefully ignoring things for a week has resulted in enough meltage to free the tarp and the chair so I can just move things around and clean up the place. Besides ... I don't want to run out of hammers. Stephanie Gray is a word girl, project manager and college teacher who makes up words, has petulant body parts and obsesses about her patio. sjgray@bell.net.

AUDREY'S QUICK THINKING PAID DIVIDENDS FOR MOTHER MARY COOK RECALLS SISTER'S CRAFTY WORK ON PUFFED WHEAT BAG MARY COOK Column

It was a warm Saturday afternoon, and Audrey and I were setting out for Briscoe's General Store, lugging the little wagon Father had got in a trade at Thacker's Garage. We had a list of things Mother needed, and there would be too much to carry home without the wagon. Even though it was warm, my sister had on a jacket, and for a very good reason. Tucked in the sleeve of her coat was a long knitting needle which would be put to good use when we got to the store. For a treat, Mother said Audrey could pick up sev-

en maple cookies, which were my favourite, and were in a tilted box right near the front door. You could smell them as soon as you walked in. So for supper that night, each of us would have one cookie to go with the little fruit nappie of preserved raspberries. Of course, we had no money. Everything would be put on Mother's bill. There would be the pound of green tea, measured out in a brown paper bag, and tied with string. A can of Gillett's lye for the batch of homemade soap Mother was planning on making, a spool of white thread, and the smallest tin of baking powder to tie us over until the Watkins man came with his suitcases of goods. On the list was a bag of

puffed wheat. As far as I was concerned, we could easily do without it. I never liked the taste of it, and it always stuck to the roof of my mouth. I don't think the rest of the family thought much of it either but it was also bought for a very special reason. The puffed wheat came in a large bag with a paper mesh strip down the front. Now, you couldn't see through the mesh, and I could never figure out why it was there. And inside every bag was a piece of china! Imagine! Real china! Over time we had collected a fair amount of the dishes, and it was used when we had company. Unfortunately, we had piles of saucers, and about three cups. The plates were so scarce, only company got them when we had visitors who stayed for a meal. Of course, you couldn't see inside the bag, so you had no

idea what piece of china was inside. My sister Audrey - a smart one she was - was determined not one more saucer was coming into our house! The only thing left on our list was the puffed wheat. It was my job to stay at the counter and talk to Mr. Briscoe. I could see Audrey out of the corner of my eye. She had stooped down by the low shelf where the puffed wheat was stacked, took the knitting needle out of the sleeve of her jacket, and began stabbing it into the strip of mesh down the front of the package. Her purpose was to bypass anything that felt like a saucer and try to find a cup or a bigger plate. Finally, she hit pay-dirt! She took the bag over to the counter, Mr. Briscoe wrote the price on Mother's bill, and we loaded the little

wagon and headed for home. Usually, Mother wouldn't let us open the puffed wheat bag until it was needed, but Audrey said she had a big surprise for Mother. And there, halfway down in the bag was a cup! Mother didn't ask Audrey how she knew there was a cup inside, and I certainly wasn't going to be the one to tell her. Audrey took off her jacket, took out the knitting needle and put it back in the sewing basket by the Singer sewing machine. Boy that sister of mine sure was a smart one. I knew, without a doubt, that it

wouldn't be long until we had a cup for every saucer stacked in the back-to-thewall cupboard - and maybe a couple of plates to go with them! Interested in an electronic version of Mary's books? LISTEN TO ARCHITECTURAL CONSERVATION OF WOODEN HERITAGE BUILDINGS Those of us who are descended from the early European settlers concentrate our study of heritage and culture on what we are most familiar with. Unfortunately, we often fail to appreciate and protect that aspect of the past until it usually is - almost, or even actually - too late. We do not see the failings until the cost of restoring, and the time to carry out

the necessary work involves huge amounts of funds and time. Stone buildings are the more obvious to restore (note the present work on Parliament Hill). However, wooden structures are more susceptible to the ravages of time and neglect. Consider the old wooden barns of Ontario or the old wooden grain elevators in the Prairies. Their

restoration would require a more sensitive approach. Jack Hollinger is our guest for this month. He is a local boy, having grown up in Ferguson's Falls and attended Perth District Collegiate Institute. His post secondary education includes two undergraduate degrees from Queen's University, plus programs in heritage carpentry and joinery at Algonquin Col-

lege - Perth Campus. At the Perth Campus, he has been teaching the heritage carpentry and joinery program for the past 10 years, and overseeing it for the past four years. Hollinger and his wife of 15 years, Donna Klassen, have two sons. Hollinger's work experiences have taken him to The Northwest Territories, the Laurentians of north-

riverview realty ltd. Brokerage

In addition to the Norwegian experience, he was chosen to be a member of a group of heritage carpenters and professionals from around the world for a course on wooden architectural preservation, focusing on the restoration of the iconic Church of the Transfiguration on Kizhi Island, Karelia in north western Russia.

ern Quebec, Lanark County and Colorado. Further afield, he has been to Norway to study wood architectural conservation, especially their unique stave churches, most recently as a guest instructor on traditional wooden building techniques for the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property in Oslo, Norway.

Clients will see a creative foyer upon entrance to Suite 106 (around back of the building), at 40 Sunset Blvd., complete with a beautiful reception area which her husband - renowned living stones creator, John Schweighardt has made. Soon, she will have a seating area where clients can mingle during wine making preparations, or often, as Schweighardt explained, she'll have a bridal party on site for a tasting opportunity. Craft winemakers who expect more from an everyday wine enjoy drinking Cru International. The wines highlight the unique

tastes of the most acclaimed wine styles of the old and new worlds, Schweighardt noted about her wines. The wine takes from five to eight weeks to ferment, depending on the variety, Schweighardt said. The Wine Room supplies the bottles and corks, and if you bring your own bottles, they can be sanitized on site. Wine making is an opportunity to enjoy a really great wine at a fraction of the cost, she said. For example, a light white would cost $110 for 30 bottles. Schweighardt said her clients have been wonderful to support her business over the years, and they are thrilled with the new space. Schweighardt will also offer merchandise which will be on display in the reception area. Come check out the new location on Saturday, May 11, from noon to 4 p.m. during the grand opening. The Wine Room is located at 40 Sunset Blvd., Suite 106, in Perth. Hours of operation are Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Wine Room is closed on Sunday and Monday. LAWS TO RUN POUND SERVICES IN PILOT PROJECT DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@ metroland.com The Town of Perth has entered into a new $4,000 contract with the Lanark Animal Welfare Society for cat pound services. The move was given preliminary approval at Perth town council's meeting of the committee of the whole, on Tuesday, March 5, to give the contract to the Lanark Animal Welfare Society (LAWS) as a one-year pilot project. "I don't want to sound like I don't like cats, though I don't have one and never

will," joked Mayor John Fenik, before questioning staff on how much the town would be on the hook for any vets bills incurred by the cats. "I know it's a no-kill shelter," said Fenik. "Vet bills for animals can go very high." "That was staff's concern," said Forbes Symon, town hall's director of development and protective services. "It's a new initiative for the town, and we will monitor it carefully." But Deputy Mayor Ed McPherson said he was "hoping to see an upset limit," on the top amount that

the town would pay for an ill cat. Symon said that if costs got too high, "we can walk away from the agreement," with 30 days' notice. The motion was carried. The town's dog pound services are currently offered by Anita Stuart, acting as the town's animal control officer, according to a staff report submitted by Symon. The town currently does not offer cat pound services, and Stuart "does not have the capacity to expand her operation beyond the current dog pound services."

BARKLEY CUP COMES TO PERTH Continued from page 1

After losing their opening game 7-3 of the best-ofseven finals, the Blue Wings never looked back, taking the next four straight games: 5-4 (OT) at home on Friday, April 5; 3-2 back in Ottawa on Saturday, April 6; 3-2 (double OT) in Perth on Monday, April 8, and finally, 6-3, back in Ottawa on Tursday, April 8. "It's been a magical sixyear ride," McLean said. "I am so happy for our players, fans, corporate sponsors and volunteers ... they are all champions." He said he was especially happy for Johnathan Peacock, a four-year member of the team, and it was thanks in part to his out-

standing goaltending efforts that the Blue Wings were crowned the champs this season. McLean also gave kudos to the "outstanding leadership" with the team's captains: Mack Miller, Matthew O'Brien, Tyler Murphy, "our captains led the way." After the team's opening game loss, McLean said they had a meeting to "reset and commit" to playing Blue Wings hockey - win or lose. "We made the Ottawa Canadians come through six of us at all times," he said. "Our 1-3-1 trap was our backbone. The Canadians had only lost four game all season, so it was Perth's goal to push as hard as they could

'HOOP IT UP' RAISES $325 FOR ST. JOHN BEST BUDDIES PROGRAM DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@ metroland.com The Best Buddies kids know how to aim high. In fact, their aim could not have been better than the $325.25 the program raised at the annual "Hoop It Up" fundraiser at St. John Catholic High School in Perth on Tuesday, April 4. With 105 kids in the gym, 90 participants, organizer Madigan Stacey said that those numbers were "a big jump from last year." She led classroom visits on March 20 to drum up attention for the event, which saw 11 special needs "buddies" in the basketball event. Stacey said she got help from the school's leadership team to help get the event together, and she commended 17 of the school's basketball players,

from all four teams (senior and junior, male and female), who volunteered their time. "I didn't force any one of them out here," she joked. "A lot of them are really good with the kids." Teacher Sharon Scattolon said that in the years the event has been happening she has seen "lots of positive changes at our school ... a lot of friendships forming." She said she's heard fewer and fewer students use the "R" word to denigrate special needs students, and "we are learning and growing up together." The winners were: • Alison Salvian, Top Buddy, with 11 shots; • Teacher David McKenzie, Top Teacher, with 13 shots; • Emma Kealy, top female, with 10 shots; and, • Jake Hagan, top male, with 14 shots.

Doef, a sophomore at the Ivy League school, is a big part of the men's hockey team, despite a career-ending spinal cord injury in 2014. On Saturday, Doef was awarded the 1941 Championship Trophy. This award is presented annually to a player who best reflected the winning spirit of the 1941 championship team and in so doing was an inspiration to his teammates. Doef, who turned 22 in February, spoke with the Record News last fall, and said he was enjoying his time at Princeton, a school that honoured its commitment to him. With great sadness we announce the sudden passing of John Alfred Sims, 87, of Oxford Mills on April 11, 2019 peacefully, at home in his favorite chair. Predeceased by his eldest son David, John leaves his loving wife of nearly 65 years, “Marnie” Marianne (Nixon) and adoring children Ian (Akie lchiryu), Jennifer (Peter Down) and Alison (David VanZyl), grandchildren Hayley and Michael Down, Mark, Johnathon and Erin VanZyl and Kaito Hori - Sims, three great grandchildren, nieces and a nephew in the UK and Canada. Born in London England, John excelled in both his RAF flight training in the 50’s and his MBA program, SFU, 1974. As an engaging conversationalist who could also find humour in any situation, he was a natural diplomat. Following four years of RAF, and immigrating to Canada he served as such from 1967 1992 taking postings in six overseas missions in trade and consular affairs. He enjoyed a year’s secondment to white colour crime, RCMP, and the 1984 - 5 NDC course in Kingston ON during his and Marnie’s distinguished diplomatic career. John could do anything; flying upside down under the Firth - of Forth bridge, restoring a “54 MGTC, building ( and flying ) his Long EZ, a boat in the basement, an expansive addition on to the home, and several classic and lasting furniture pieces. He once replaced a broken fan belt with Marnie’s stocking, and in the jungle in Ceylon “Macgyvered” a breaker in a distributor of a VW bus with a stick and some tin-foil. A consummate gentleman, he was equally at ease in his workshop, with his nose in a book or sleeves rolled up with the likes of Jean Chretien. His greatest joy was his home life and greatest regrets not accepting a two-dayold-chick flying gig in Australia, and not have lived to 102- in order to collect all his pension. “You earned your wings dad. Fly.” There will be an open reception at the residence, Thursday, April 25, 3-5 pm to celebrate a life exceptionally well lived. In lieu of flowers, please take a loved one out and make memories. The memories are vivid, As the special day arrived. And all our hearts and souls, Remember you with pride. The loss of you still hurts us, But the memory lingers there. In that space that feels so empty, That space that you still share. The tears will flow, the heart will ache, In wishing you were here. Your heart can be empty because you cannot see her, or you can be full of the love you shared. You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday, or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday. You can remember her and only that she’s gone, or you can cherish her memory and let it live on. HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

SMITHS FALLS SWIMMER, BAILEY ANDISON QUALIFIES FOR TEAM CANADA AND WILL COMPETE AT PANAM GAMES IN PERU Bailey Andison is going to Peru for the PanAm Games as part of the swim team for Canada July 26 to Aug. 11. At the end of the five-day Canadian swim trials in Toronto, it was announced that Andison, 21, of Smiths Bailey Andison Falls, would be a member of the swim team representing Canada at the Pan-Am games in Lima, Peru this summer. To make a satisfying moment even better, it was also announced that her former Perth Stingray swim colleague and good friend, Olivia Ellard, had been chosen to represent Canada at the World University Games in Naples, Italy. It was a proud moment for both of the girls, and no doubt for the local Perth Swim Club. Andison had returned to Canada from the U.S. - where she had just concluded swimming in her fourth consecutive year as a finalist in the NCAA Collegiate Championships - to compete in the Canadian trials. On Thursday, her first event was the 400 individual medley (IM), in which she recorded a satisfying fifth place finish in the final of what is generally regarded as the hardest race on the swimming calendar. In the 50 metre breaststroke, Saturday, Andison won her heat in the preliminaries, where her time put her in second place overall for the final that same night. However, she decided to scratch from the final as she was due to swim in Sunday's 200 IM and wanted to go into that race as fresh as she could. Sunday morning, Andison won her heat in the 200 IM and her time of 2:13:57 was a personal best and third of the trials, second overall. In the final it was Andison coming home in third place, for her first "open age" national medal, with a time that ranked her in the top 10 in the world as of that date. Submitted by Laurie Saywell
