Jackie Seaton, potter and founder of Empty Bowls Perth, was honoured Thursday, May 9 when a cedar bench was unveiled in the Empty Bowls Garden at the Table Community Food Centre.

A plaque placed on the bench commemorates Seaton and his unwavering commitment to support good food for all.

Seaton, who died in 2013 from a rare form of blood cancer, founded Empty Bowls Perth in 2002. Since then, Empty Bowls Perth has raised some $200,000 for local food security programs thanks to the continued efforts of local potters and business partnerships. This year's event, held at the Festival of the Maples, raised $13,500.

Do you know someone who is always helping others, gives many hours of volunteer time and consistently works for the good of the community? If so, then why not nominate him/her for the 2019 Perth Medal?

The Perth Medal is a Mayor’s Award, presented annually by the Town of Perth to a person who has shown the greatest distinction in a number of endeavours, over the course of his or her life, to benefit the Perth community as a whole, with no monetary gain to themselves. This may be in the fields of community work, fundraising, volunteerism, etc.

A nominee must be an individual (no couples or groups) who resides in the Town of Perth or the surrounding Townships of Tay Valley or Drummond/North Elmsley. The activity being recognized must be totally and singularly related to achievements within the Town of Perth. No person elected to public office may be nominated, nor may the award be presented posthumously.

"We were really pleased," said town hall's community services director, Shannon Baillon, during Perth town council's committee of the whole meeting on Tuesday, May 7, of the 225 responses to the active transportation plan survey. One of the big take-aways from the poll was that there were a large number of comments about the sidewalks on Highway 7, and the ability for pedestrians to access the area. There were also concerns for pedestrian connectivity to the new subdivisions north of Highway 7.

Mayor John Fenik noted that when one drives far enough west on Highway 7 and reaches towns like Havelock or Norwood, the speed limit drops, and there are sidewalks.

"Slow down the traffic on that stretch (of Highway 7 in Perth) and put sidewalks there," said Fenik.

"That's what needs to be

Fenik suggested that even one sidewalk on one side of the road could be a good temporary measure.

"It's time to do something there for sure," said Fenik.

Baillon also noted that walking was just as important as cycling, with safe

crossings.

Coun. David Bird wondered how much of a priority the walking trail along the Tay, starting behind the Lanark County council offices, was for those polled. "(It was the) second highest (item) that people thought should be developed," said Baillon. "The challenge is that a lot of it (the trail) is in the flood plain."

around here for making the dedication and to honour Seaton and the work he has done and continues to be done in his honour.

The Empty Bowls Perth fundraiser started 18 years ago. Potters and ceramic students make 500 bowls annually to be sold at the Festival of the Maples each April, filled with soup from local restaurants - all for a $25 donation. The funds raised from this event, and from the sale of bowls at Foodsmiths, and the Riverguild Fine Crafts, as well as through partnerships with local banks like TD and Scotiabank, is given to local food security organizations.

Donations support the Table, YAK Youth Services, Food for Thought: Lanark County school nutrition program, the Lanark Highlands Food Pantry, and the Guatemala Stove Project.

The radiothon will highlight the need for a CT scanner for the Almonte General Hospital, an ultrasound machine for the Carleton Place and District Memorial Hospital, and monies for travel expenses, drug cost support and program services for the community health centres in Lanark, Portland and Westport. A fundraising radiothon in support of local health care will hit the airwaves of Lake 88.1 on Thursday, May 23.

The station is planning a full day of interviews and information segments to increase the awareness of local health care facilities, professionals, programs and services within Lake 88's listening area and to highlight specific programs and equipment needs that require funding.

Station owner Brian Perkin says, "We know our hospitals and community health centres are under increasing financial pressure to provide quality health care. But not everyone knows that some of the funding for our local facilities has to come from the community. People say we pay taxes, so why are hospitals asking for donations of even more money?"

Perkin states that one of the little-known facts about health care funding is that each hospital in Ontario is funded by a general budget that pays for heat, hydro, maintenance and the salaries of nursing and support staff.

"That budget does not cover the purchase of medical equipment to provide patient care. Medication pumps, surgical equipment, vital signs monitors, specialized beds, etc. are all purchased from funds donated by members of the

MY DOG TESTED POSITIVE FOR LYME - NOW WHAT? LYME DISEASE IS PREVALENT AND TICKS ARE PLENTIFUL, WRITES LAURIE WEIR LAURIE WEIR Column

My German shepherd, Lexi, tested positive this week for Lyme. I'm trying to let that sink in. I'm diligent with her Lyme prevention medication, and I check for ticks after each outing. Already this year, I have removed two blacklegged ticks - the carrier of Lyme disease.

But hearing those words from the vet tech was a little unreal. She can't be positive for Lyme - I do all the right things. I even spray my hands with a concoc-

tion of essential oils made specifically for tick and flea prevention, and rub her down with it for added protection. I spray myself.

Lexi's annual vet check was otherwise a good one.

She'd gained a small amount of weight, but it was a long, cold winter and there was not a lot of running, due to copious amounts of ice. I'd rather deal with a 0.2-pound weight gain than with a broken leg.

Our spring vet visit is one where we discuss flea and tick prevention. Lexi gets her shots for rabies, distemper, parvovirus and leptospirosis. I was asked about a blood test for heartworm where they could also check for Lyme disease she's never had either blood test, because she's only three, so they went ahead with it.

By the time I got home, I received the call from the tech confirming my worst fears. Lyme disease has been bad already this year.

She tells me another blood test (she drew enough blood) will confirm if it's an active case of Lyme disease, which would need to be treated with antibiotics, or if it's something she's had for a while and is not active - it may never be active. Of course, no question: further testing, please.

Lexi is not showing signs of Lyme disease, like a fever, loss of appetite, reduced energy or lameness.

If it's not active, we'll check again in six months.

Monthly doses a chewable treatment is the course of action at this point.

Be diligent with tick checks. If caught early, your dog can live a long and healthy life.

AT 10 REFERRALS PER WEEK, HOSPICE SERVICES IN DEMAND DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@ metroland.com As Lanark County's population gets older, calls are more frequent to the Community Home Support (CHS) Lanark County's hospice and palliative care services.

"There seems to be quite a demand," said Melissa McDougall, catching a quiet moment before the start of the pancake breakfast that kicked of the 12th annual Hike for Hospice, held on Sunday, May 5 in Perth "The referrals are starting to pick up."

CHS offers not only a volunteer hospice visiting service, but also peer-support bereavement program, which "there seems to be a real need for," she said, as well as the weekly day hospice program.

"It's good to see," she said, in that more people are becoming aware of the program. "Until you need it, you don't know it's

there." And when you or a loved one gets that terminal diagnosis, "you don't want them (clients) to feel that they are alone," even if "people may not need them right away."

Client services manager Suzanne Bourbonnais agreed that demand was growing, and, by her count, there were about 10 referrals per week. "(There is) definitely demand," said Bourbonnais.

But that's just the tip of the iceberg.

"We know that there is even more need out there," said McDougall.

Bourbonnais was quick to add that a client does not need a doctor's referral to access their services, though "it takes time to make the match ...(and) there are times when we have a wait list." Families, friends, or even neighbours can make referrals, she said.

TAKE A TOLL Working with hospice patients means that there will inevitably be losses.

Sometimes, "you only have two or three weeks with a client," said McDougall.

But, "some we've followed for years ... Yes, we do grow attached."

While the client is at the centre of the care, "we want to be able to support the families. We've been to our fair share of funerals," both to say goodbye to the client, and to be there for the family, said McDougall.

ly members can take a break," said McDougall.

Volunteers can also help with baking or assist with a "scary" appointment.

Mary Ann Nicholson helped found the hospice back in the last century, December of 1999.

"We could not do this without the volunteers," she said, getting ready to walk the walk. "The health

care system would cost a whole lot more," were it not for volunteers, Nicholson said.

Later that morning, the two-kilometre walk left from the Perth Royal Canadian Legion, to raise funds for hospice palliative care services in and around Lanark County. The walk raised funds not only for Community Home Support

Lanark County, but also the Smiths Falls Community Hospital Foundation and the Great War Memorial Hospital Foundation too.

TWO WEDDINGS Of course, humans are resilient, and find ways to make connections even at times of great suffering.

pitals and federal prisons as a Pentecostal minister.

Through her multi-denominational work, she has conducted not one but two weddings for hospice clients.

"It was one of the most touching marriages I ever did," said Orok. Both the bride and groom went into the marriage "knowing full well that her time was limited."

Members of the day hospice "made a nice photo album," for the happy couple,

remembered McDougall, and members of the day program helped celebrate on the big day.

"It's really whatever the client needs," said Orok.

That included working with one lady suffering

with a brain tumour, who worked with Orok to plan out every last detail of her funeral.

On Sunday, May 5, the 12th annual Hike for Hospice started its two-kilometre jaunt at the Perth Royal Canadian Legion. COME FROM AWAY: LANARK VILLAGE LOSES CHIEF LIBRARIAN TO NEWFOUNDLAND DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@ metroland.com Lanark Highlands Township is losing its librarian to Newfoundland.

David Rowe will be leaving as the chief librarian at the George Street library in Lanark village in late May, once his replacement is in place, to ease the transition period.

Rowe's wife, who is also a librarian, found out that she had gotten a job in Canada's 'Far East' in March, prompting the couple to journey to the island last week, where he dropped her off for her first day of work on April 15.

"We got caught up in the nasty freezing rain on Monday (April 8), and the blizzard on Tuesday (April 9)," he said, during a telephone interview from Stephenville, NL, on April 15, of their trek through Quebec.

The town is located on the western edge of the island of Newfoundland, where he and his wife, Dawn Silver, arrived on April 12. With his wife at work, he took a walk around his new hometown that morning, walking down the road where he "looked left and there is St. George's Bay, which is full of pack ice."

The journey was daunting enough for the couple but marks a very pan-Canadian journey for his wife, who grew up on Vancouver Island.

"She's glad to get back near the ocean again," he said, though he grew up in Montreal.

When he been hired, he told his bosses that "I was looking at three to five

years," in the post. "I hadn't anticipated moving to Newfoundland."

His wife was a librarian

in Eganville, where the couple had been living, before she got her new job with Newfoundland and Labrador Public Libraries.

"It's a lot more responsibility and challenges," than she had in Eganville, he said. As for himself, "I may find a job within the local public library system, even if its only shelving books," he said with a laugh.

Rowe has been in his current position in Lanark village since October of 2017.

"I like working here," he said, citing the "great" staff and users, all of whom he found to be "100 per cent honest and friendly."

He has seen changes in the time he has been at the library. When he arrived, there was a "clientele of little kids and their moms and retirees coming in. Now we have teens coming in regularly, and school visits," from elementary schools, he said, making for a great-

er range of ages using the facility.

"The library is getting more and more popular," he said.

One aspect of his life in Ontario that he "won't miss" is the commute from Eganville to Lanark village. However, "it's a nice road, no traffic," even though it takes one hour and 20 minutes.

LIBRARY HISTORY Rowe began his library work when he graduated from McGill University's library school in Montreal in 1979. He worked in Montreal from 1980 to 1990, when he transferred to a library in Orillia, Ont., from 1990 to 2012. It was in Orillia that he met Dawn.

After 2012, he retired for about five years, and the couple moved to Grand Prairie, Alta., where he ran an online bookstore for a time, before the couple moved to Eganville.

HIGH FIVES FOR KINDERGARTEN TEACHERS Two weeks ago, I went on my daughter's kindergarten trip to Brockville. Sure, this will be fun, I thought.

While it was fun, it was also exhausting.

And loud. And there were some tears.

Even some of the kids cried, too.

Afterwards, I felt as though I needed a four-day nap session to recover (I promise, it was still fun).

STUDENTS WALK BACK IN TIME DURING PERTH REGIONAL HERITAGE FAIR LOMBARDY STUDENTS WIN TOP PRIZE LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com There were some 90 students from Lanark Leeds and Grenville counties who showcased their knowledge of history during this year's Perth Heritage Fair, held at the Perth Royal Canadian Legion on Thursday, May 9.

Each school held its own heritage fair over the past several weeks, with the top contenders vying for the big prizes at the regional showcase.

It was the 16th rendition of the event, with students learning some unique tasks at a variety of workshops around town - like felting, illuminated letter-

ing, baking, weaving and blacksmithing. Students also took part in a walking tour of the Old Burying Ground at Last Duel Park.

The overall winner was Maxx Barber from Lombardy Public School, with his project on Omamiwinini First Nations of Golden Lake.

"I lived there as a child," said the Grade 7 student, dressed in Indigenous clothing. "I went to daycare and learned the language, but I only remember basic greetings now."

Maxx said he that learned a lot about the migration of the Omamiwinini (Algonquins), including the Seven Fires Prophecy.

"I felt a real connection to the people," he said.

Maxx earned the top honours for his work, claiming the Ontario Power Generation Best of Fair Award.

ACUPUNCTURIST OFFERS ALTERNATIVE METHOD OF PAIN RELIEF DOWDALL OFFERS ALTERNATIVE METHOD OF PAIN RELIEF LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com Lynn Dowdall has been practising ancient Chinese acupuncture techniques for more than 20 years, and now she wants to make it more accessible to those who may be looking for an alternative form of mainstream medicine.

"My passion has always been to help people in pain, but also to help people with addictions," she said.

Dowdall is now branching off from her home clinic treatments to offer community acupuncture, "which is done in a room with other people on comfy chairs in a quiet setting -

like this ... like my living room," she said.

Her clinic is located inside her log cabin in the woods, which is off the beaten path that is Highway 7, between Wemyss and Brooke.

Even though clients are seated, Dowdall said that she can still access acupuncture points on the extremities as well as on the ears. She can treat up to 10 people at one time.

Now she offers help for people suffering from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and brain injuries.

"I now know a new protocol for PTSD and traumatic brain injuries," she said. "I have already started doing this, and so far, good results. It's a type of ear acupuncture."

She is also available at Johnson Chiropractic Clinic at 130 Sproule Road in Perth, just off Highway 511, with Dr. Kelly Johnson,

Dowdall said that acupuncture should not hurt.

"Acupuncture has been around for 5,000 years, but people are always wanting to make things better ... if it's not broken, why fix it?"

She learned acupuncture in Sri Lanka, and has a medical lab technician background; she studied traditional Chinese medicine from three different colleges.

Dowdall has used acupuncture herself and knows it works. A bad car accident resulted in chronic pain and mobility issues, which "basically disabled" her. This gave her cause to seek an alternative way to relieve her pain. She was also diagnosed with fibromyalgia - which she says, after a period of treatments, that she no longer has. It's a mindset, she said:

if someone tells you that you have something, it is going to take a while to change the thought process.

Many people use acupuncture, primarily as pain relief, she said. Others use it to alleviate addictions like smoking, food cravings, drugs or alcohol.

"There are so many addictions as well," she said.

"It's an actual physical change in the body when you do it for addiction. People are so busy that it's

hard to pin people down for that."

Pun intended? Perhaps.

To get health issues under control, Dowdall said that it may take one to 10 treatments to alleviate the symptoms, then monthly maintenance treatments.

However, you don't have to be sick to seek acupuncture.

"A lot of people come for pain," she said. "Anywhere in the body. People will come for things like Bell's palsy (a condition that par-

alyzes or weakens one side of the face). It's best to do that right away, and not wait for that. And addictions like smoking, weight loss or sugar addiction."

When people come for addictions, Dowdall will talk to her clients to help them through their issues; if it's more deep-seated, she can recommend a therapist.

One does not need a recommendation to visit her, though, she said. "They can just book an appointment."

The average number of

treatments is seven to 10 for adults, for different conditions. It also depends on pain levels - is it chronic or acute pain?

"Depending on why people are having acupuncture, then you would want to have a few treatments a week for a few weeks, then taper off," she said. "Coming once a month isn't going to do it. The least amount of times you can come for some relief is twice a month, and I've seen lots of miracles."

Dowdall, who is also a herbalist, can recommend herbal teas to complement a treatment regime.

Treatments are $70 for an initial consultation, and $60 per session afterwards the community acupuncture will be less. After the initial session, Dowdall will give a traditional Chinese medical diagnosis.

Earlier this month, I came across a CBC story on the wild interwebs about how a school in Windsor, Ontario is offering classes on "adulting" to Grade 12 students.

Awesome - in a sad sort of way.

The story, "High school holds adulting classes" by Amy Dodge, notes more than 100 students are taking the class that provides life skills to prepare them for adulthood.

The list of skills includes such things as changing a tire, checking oil, patching a hole in drywall, checking breakers, using power tools, budgeting, managing credit cards, sewing on a button, hemming pants, ironing, sorting laundry, cooking for one (e.g. how to make five meals with one rotisserie chicken) and mindfulness: stress management.

I have long maintained that I am not very good at adulting; or, at the very

least, I don't like it much. A lot of the time I would rather be 17 and listening to my The Joshua Tree cassette over and over again.

Alas, here I am, wearing my Big Girl Pants (under a slight bit of duress) day after day. I admit I don't really know how to hem those pants, but I can wash, sort, iron and sew a button on them.

It is a little embarrassing to look at that list (which, I believe, is only a partial list) and realize there are a few things on there that I'm not too sure about.

For instance, I am basically aware of how to change a tire, but given my glaring lack of upper body strength, I'm more likely to phone a friend or CAA. I just don't see things going well with the lug nuts, really.

I have the laundry thing down pat, although I avoid ironing like the plague. I can also be very creative when it comes to rotisserie chicken, although I'm usually cooking for four.

This isn't about me, though. It's about the kids.

I know students who have switched from academic math (which is rife with algebra, functions, and general terror for some) to applied math, which is an awesome course. They learn budgeting and financing and how to buy a car and such practical things.

One of the teachers at

the Windsor school, Jeanette Giroux, teaches science but leads the sewing club. "I just feel like sewing is a skill that we're starting to lose .... As much as technology progresses, you're still going to need pants."

True story.

At my house, some of the short people (who aren't actually short anymore) have shown a greater interest in learning how to cook than others. Both are pretty adept with a microwave - there is definitely room to grow.

We had to take home economics and shop classes in elementary school, and both provided foundations that I use to this day. I still occasionally serve the tuna noodle casserole we learned to make. (Thanks, Mrs. Rous!)

It's interesting how life rolls along, and before you know it, you've got a kid on the brink of adulting and you realize that you still have a lot to teach. Does that feeling of "oh my god, I forgot to tell him this and show him that" ever subside?

I think we sometimes believe that our kids learn by osmosis when they are near us as we do a thing a kazillion times. I am here to tell you, people, this is not always true. Make them actually plunge the toilet! Or wiggle the thingy in the tank when it sticks and the water keeps running! Or change the batteries in the smoke detector!

The horrid truth is, though, it doesn't matter how many classes you take, adulting is always a work in progress, so make sure that you have a good soundtrack. (Listens to The Joshua Tree loudly.)

Hearty, Gerda Eleanor (Nee Tanner)

October 15th, 1942 May 11th, 2019 It is with profound sorrow that we announce the sudden death of Gerda Hearty on Saturday, May 11th, 2019.

She was surrounded by her family while visiting her childhood “camp” in Quebec. Gerda is predeceased by her loving parents, Freda Evoy (Tanner)(Nee Lecharity) and James Albert Tanner. Gerda’s death leaves broken hearted: Al Hearty her much loved husband of almost 54 years; her cherished daughters, Kerrie and Krista (Michael McLean); and beloved grandchildren Ashton Kerr, Ireland Hearty Kerr and Emery McLean. She also leaves to mourn: her dear brother Roy Tanner (Mavis) of Carleton Place, sisters and brothers-in-law, Karen Smith, Donna Keon (Stan), Odel Hearty, Graeme “Sandy” McDougall, Jerry Hearty, and Gary Hearty (Theresa), along with, many adored nieces and nephews and a large group of very close friends whom she loved. She was predeceased by her beloved sister-in-law Sharon McDougall and brother-in-law Durrell “Butch” Smith. Throughout her full life, Gerda’s fun loving nature drew in and brightened the lives of those who had the good fortune to meet her. Her compassionate and encouraging disposition has touched and influenced so many lives throughout her long career as a teacher in Perth and Smiths Falls followed by many years of community service in Perth. Gerda contributed greatly to her community by coaching countless school sports teams, volunteering in her grandchildren’s classrooms, being the secretary for the Rotary Club and the Retired Teachers Federation, and organizing events as the hospitality coordinator for the CFUW to name a few. Gerda took immense joy from being with her children and grandchildren, spending time baking, laughing and playing.

No matter what was going on in Gerda’s life, the moment her kids and grandkids walked in the door they were greeted with wide open arms and an expression that told them they were the most important person in the world and had her full attention. Most of those who knew this strong, vibrant woman will remember best her zest for life, her caring nature and her ability to see the good in everyone. Friends were received at the Blair & Son Funeral Home, 15 Gore St W, Perth on Thursday, May 16th, 2019 from 2:00 to 5:00 & 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. A celebration of Gerda’s life was held in St. Paul’s United Church, 25 Gore St. W, Perth on Friday, May 17th, 2019 at 11:00 A.M. A reception followed in the Church Hall. Memorial donations in Gerda’s memory should be directed to Great War Memorial Hospital Foundation.

(nee South) Passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side on Wednesday, May 15, 2019 at the age of 85.

Muriel was predeceased by her loving husband Bill; her parents Bill and Gertrude South; brother Frank South, sisters Jean (late Gerry) Vandusen and Anna White. Muriel will be sadly missed by her sisters Mary (Dave) Splane and Isabelle (late Earl) Carey; sisters-in-law Eva (Bob) Dryden, Dolores (late Roy) Siegman, Betty (Tip) Thompson, Barbarita (late Bill) Watson and brothers-in-law Don (Val) Barill and Bill White. Muriel’s memory will be cherished by numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Muriel loved her family and friends, especially the little ones, feeding the birds, gardening and being outdoors. Muriel was always smiling with a positive attitude and a great sense of humour. (nee Waterman), B.A. Passed away peacefully at the Smiths Falls Hospital on Sunday, May 12, 2019 at the age of 78. Dear mother of Ruth, Beth (Richard Puckett), and Wesley (Catherine).

Loving grandmother of Wesley Bell (Mackenzie), Sean, Katie, Eva, and Laura. Sister of Fred (Linda), Bill, and Gail (Jim Robinson).

Predeceased by her husband Barry, her son Michael, parents Fred and Margaret Waterman, and by her sisters Margaret and Grace. She will be fondly remembered by her many nieces, nephews and extended family and friends. Evelyn will be remembered as a banker, librarian, and homemaker, a lifelong learner, and a passionate collector of rocks, minerals, and fossils. Evelyn’s contributions into the communities in which she lived led to many long lasting friendships. Family and friends are welcome to gather at Elmwood Cemetery for a graveside service on Monday, June 3, 2019 at 11:00 am, where we will inter both our mother and father together in the family plot. Keates, Karen Ruth

December 7, 1957 May 12, 2019 It is with great sadness that the family of Karen Keates, announce the passing of their beloved mother, wife, and grandmother on May 12, 2019 at the young age of 61. With her loving husband of 39 years by her side she passed peacefully, after a long but courageous battle with cancer.

Karen is lovingly remembered by her devoted husband Richard; her daughter Kelly, her sons Alex (Ashley) and Jason (Amanda), her many nieces and nephews as well as her beloved grandchildren; Benjamin and Mia. Karen is predeceased by her sister Kathryn (Roger) and her mom Ruth. Karen was born in Iserlohn, Germany on December 7, 1957 and immigrated to Canada when she was a baby.

Karen will be forever known for her immense love for her family and will be sorely missed by her countless friends and her beloved dog, Jasper. A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date to be determined by the family.

Olga will be missed by her brother Alex Williams, her nephews Sandy, David, Steven, Jamie and Trevor Williams, nieces Sandra Williams and Kate Brown. She was predeceased by her brother Harold in 2010. Olga was born in St. John’s, Newfoundland and held those roots dear to her heart. (June 11, 1949 May 16, 2019) It is with saddened hearts the family of Muriel Irwin announces her passing on Thursday, May 16, 2019. Daughter of the late George and Mary Jannack. Much loved wife and soul mate of Kenny Irwin. Cherished and adored mom of Jim (Lee Ann) Gilligan, and Troy Coughlin.

Deeply loved nana to her precious granddaughter Allison Gilligan. Muriel will be forever missed by her siblings Sharon (Late Ted McMillan), Mary (late Greg Jackson and late Dan Ring), and Ernie (Kathy) Jannack.

Predeceased by her sister Gina James, and brother Keith Jannack. Muriel was adored and will be deeply missed by her many sister and brothers-in-law, and nieces and nephews as well as her many friends.

Friends were invited to visit with the family at the Lannin Funeral Home, Smiths Falls, on Wednesday, May 22, 2019 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. A Memorial Service will be held at the funeral home at 1:00 PM on Thursday, May 23rd. A Celebration of Life will take place immediately following the service at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 95, Smiths Falls. My brother Emerson, I thought was afraid of nothing. He was just about the biggest boy at the Northcote School too, which made him a force to be reckoned with. But in spite of his size, he was a real coward when it came to sickness.

Well, the day he discovered a little pimple on the back of his neck that itched, he was convinced he was full of some mysterious poison put there by some germ that had never been heard of in Renfrew County! Mother said it was a simple pimple, and he was to stop putting sugar on just about everything that went into his mouth.

She said she wouldn't be surprised if the pimple was gone by morning. Emerson was just as sure it would develop into something that would need surgery.

The next morning, he turned his back to Mother who was busy stirring porridge, because he said he was sure it had grown overnight to the size of big potato. Mother said it was

nothing, but to make him feel better, she covered it with a piece of gauze, and sent him off to school with the rest of us.

That night he said it was growing like a weed, and he thought it was time to call in old Doctor Murphy from Renfrew. Mother took another look at it and declared it had grown all right ... and was now a boil.

Emerson said he was sure it was his last night in our old log house, and asked Audrey if she would sing "The Old Rugged Cross" at his funeral.

Mother knew exactly what to do with it, having heard from Mrs. Beam what to do if a boil ever developed on any one of us.

She took a small bottle out of the back of the cupboard, and held it empty over the boiling kettle. It filled with steam and as quick as a flash, she took her hand off the bottle opening, and slammed the steam-filled vial over Emerson's boil! It all happened so fast, Emerson never knew what hit him.

Emerson started to scream like a banshee. Mother told him to sit on the stool so she could get a good look at it. Of course, all of us wanted to see too, and we crowded around Emerson who was still screaming at the top of his lungs.

Mother finally gave him a cuff on the ear and grabbed his hand that he was trying to feel the spot where the boil used to be.

The next morning Emerson said he was too weak to go to school, and I was surprised that Mother said he could stay home for the day. Well, when we got home that night, there he was, still in his pyjamas, sitting at the kitchen table, drawing in his art pads. He said he was too weak to do chores, too.

That night, from the back bedroom, I heard him tell Everett that it would be a frosty day in May before he would ever again own up to having a boil anywhere on his body. He said the cure was far worse than the disease! Everett agreed.

WALK FOR ALZHEIMER'S TAKES PLACE MAY 25 IN SMITHS FALLS MOLLY READ Another year, another walk to raise funds for the Alzheimer Society.

Every year the Alzheimer's Society of Canada puts on the walk fundraiser across the country. In 2018, Canadians in 300 communities across the country, raised more than $5 million for the cause.

At walks held in Smiths Falls, Brockville and Gananoque, communities raised over $38,000.

This year the IG Wealth Manager Walk for Alzheimer's will take place on Saturday May 25, once again in Smiths Falls, Brockville, and Gananoque. These walks raise money for the Alzheimer Society, a group that provides local programs and services for both those diagnosed with Alzheimer's and other dementias, and their loved ones. Programs and services range from education to bereavement support to socialization events. These programs are important to the community and taking part in the walk is a great way to help. Participants need to raise $25 in pledges to participate.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday May 25, and light refreshments will be served. The walk begins at 10 a.m., and participants are invited to walk as much as they are able until 11 a.m. During their walk, participants may find forget-menots along the course, and those who find the flowers win a prize. Participants are automatically entered in a draw for a Fit Bit when they raise $200 or more, and each location will have a trivia challenge and for participants who answer the questions correctly, they could win a night at the Baldachin Inn in Merrickville.

There are also prizes for the top individual fundraiser, as well as the top team, which will be awarded during the closing ceremonies from 11 to 11:30 a.m.
