PERCIVAL HEADING TO MOTORCYCLE HALL OF FAME Dave "Woody" Percival will never tire of the adrenalin rush of speed on a two-wheeler.

At 65, this motorcycle enthusiast is the owner/operator of Woody's Cycles in Perth, and still races. He shows no signs of slowing down any time soon.

Woody will be inducted to the Canadian Motorcycle Hall of Fame this fall.

"I'm humbled; It's quite an honour," he said during a visit at his shop in Tay Valley Township, tucked away on 400 acres of wooded property, complete with a 15acre pond, and some 30 kilometres of trails. "I didn't see (the induction) coming. We just do it for the love of bikes. Everything is about motorcycles. It's just such a great

hobby - well, it makes a fantastic life. We've been successful over the years. It's a wonderful business, and a lot of it is about the people.

It's an enthusiast-based operation."

He and his wife, Carolin, have a wonderful existence here, he said.

"Doing what you enjoy, especially when it's your hobby, really seems to go the miles for us. You look forward to going to work. This is a hobby gone wild, and I have a great love of it. We've done a lot of things for the sport over the years and I guess that's where the contributor comes in."

Carolin added: "What Dave does for the sport of motorcycling, does not matter what kind it is: Off-road, street or road-racing, it comes second nature to him.

It is part of who he is," she

said. "From sponsoring a young motocross, or offroad rider, to a road-race class in the VRRA (Vintage Road Racing Association), to clearing trails for off-road rides, to hosting events on his property, that is who he is. I am very proud of him and all of his accomplishments, and feel that his induction into the Canadian Motorcycle Hall of Fame is well deserved."

Woody will be inducted as a contributor. Over the years he organized events and was part of the Bytown Motorcycle Association as one of the earliest presidents. He's been involved with fundraising events like the Colin Snider four-hour endurance cross-country race, which raises about $2,000 annually for local charities. He said he got his nickname in elementary school because of his flaming red hair.

"That's my moniker," he said. "It stuck with me, and that's how everybody knows me. It's become part of my brand and that's a good thing."

He said he enjoys road racing best of all.

"It's a no-brainer really," he said of road racing.

"That's my first love."

Woody was also an ice racer, turning his pond into a racing track in the middle of the winter.

For 33 years, Woody's Cycles has been the go-to place for parts and service and is a Beta and KTM dealer.

"What I learned racing comes back to my shop. It makes my work more efficient. It makes you work better ... if you get it wrong, you can die," he said. "Or you can be badly injured."

As for what happens in the shop, Woody explained: "We do off-road, dual sport sales and service, used

parts," he said. "We are more about modern bikes, but when I do vintage it's personal."

He does engines and chassis, general maintenance on Beta and KTM. "We still sell parts ... it's rather an anomaly and we're kind of hard to find."

Woody said he's always been performance oriented.

"I had a great love of speed ... of course speed and the road don't really go along that well ... Road racing is my first love, but I do off-road racing as well ... was third in the province in the day."

Woody said he's pretty old school, was born and raised in Perth. He started working at Cameron's Harley Davidson, and was there for 10 years. A lot of his work ethic was due to growing up here, he said.

His love of motorcycles started out of school with a bunch of his friends.

"We started the Palace Riders. We're still the same

group, but a couple of the boys are gone. Most of us still have bikes. We were really good friends. We still get together from time to time."

As for the immediate future, he said he still sees himself and his wife working together and carrying on ... "as long as the body co-operates."

HOMETOWN HEARTS CHARITY BARBECUE JUNE 14 TARA GESNER tgesner@metroland.com June is PTSD Awareness Month and Hometown Hearts in Carleton Place is firing up the barbecue.

Hometown Hearts and the Beckwith Butcher are co-hosting a charity barbecue on June 14, running from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The location: 1 Costello Dr., behind Shoppers Drug Mart.

In a letter to the community about the third annual barbecue, Rob Carpenter, Hometown Hearts member

and owner of the Beckwith Butcher, noted, "We would be more than happy to serve you lunch, supper or an afternoon snack."

For $5, get a drink and one of the following: burger, sausage, jumbo hotdog and pulled pork.

The barbecue, typically attended by a thousandplus people, raises funds for and awareness of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a mental illness, characteristically triggered by a shocking, frightening or dangerous event either by experiencing it or witnessing it. Because of the duties associated with their job, PTSD is mostly suffered by firefighters, police officers, paramedics, correctional workers, nurses, emergency dispatchers, enlisted people and veterans, just to name a few.

"Stop by and have a meal, learn a bit about this horrible and debilitating illness, and help our firefighters, police officers, paramedics and military," Carpenter stated. "These

heroes are there for us in our greatest time of need ... now it is our turn to be there for them."

Hometown Hearts aims to send as many people as it can to Project Trauma Support, a program addressing PTSD and operational stress injury. Project Trauma Support is a retreat and healing place for those in need. It is located just outside Perth.

"As a group, to date, we have been able to help two people, and we are in the process of helping a third go through the program ... they need to get their lives back," Carpenter noted.

There will be a fire truck and police car on site, along with information about PTSD. This year, Hometown Hearts is challenging neighbouring communities to hold barbecues in support of first responders - to see who can raise the most money. To date, Mississippi Mills, Perth and Smiths Falls have accepted the dare.

FORDE NATION? MEET THE PERTH REALTOR WHO SHARES NAME WITH PREMIER FORD DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@metroland.com About a year ago, Perth realtor Doug Forde noticed that he started getting some odd looks whenever he mentioned his name.

Some may have thought he was being a smart aleck, but, no, he really does share the same name - albeit spelled with an E at the end of his surname - as Premier Doug Ford, who was swept to office almost a year ago, on Thursday, June 7, 2018.

Forde voted in the Ontario provincial election and then, the next day, he arrived at the local Shoppers Drug Mart in town.

"There were several people behind the counter (and) six or seven people behind me," he recalled during a telephone interview on Tuesday, May 28,

during his morning workout.

He was at the pharmacy to pick up a prescription.

Doug Forde When the lady behind the counter asked for his name, he said: "Doug Forde."

"Everyone on both sides of the counter broke out laughing," he remembered.

PERTH SPECIAL OLYMPIANS ENJOY ANNUAL TORCH RUN LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com Perth's Rob McLellan was excited to take part in the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) for Special Olympics - so excited that Bill Dickson, OPP civilian spokesperson, had to tell him "this is not a race ... right, Robbie?"

McLellan, who hasn't missed a torch run in several years, grinned from ear to ear, nodded in acknowledgement, as he and fellow Special Olympian Raymond Farrell led the pack of runners who left the OPP Lanark County Detachment on Thursday,

Final dollar amounts are not yet available. All proceeds will go toward the Special Olympics programs for children and adults of all ages with intellectual disabilities. This year marks 50 years for Special Olympics.

According to the Torch Run Ontario website, the LETR for Special Olympics engages law enforcement worldwide championing acceptance and inclusion for people with intellectual disabilities, starting first with their own communities.

Over the years the Torch Run has evolved and now encompasses a variety of innovative fundraising platforms to include the Polar Plunge, Tip-A-Cop, NHL Alumni Games, Torch Rides, Endurance Series and more.

Since inception (1987 in Ontario), the LETR has raised more than $35 million and changed millions of attitudes.

OK, DAD, ENOUGH WITH THE LADDERS ALREADY STEPHANIE GRAY WRITES THAT THE APPLE DOESN'T FALL FAR FROM THE TREE This column will serve as a bit of a public service announcement to folks living in Perth. Don't worry - my dad is fine, but he won't be walking the dog for a while.

My dad, John - or Jack to some - is a regular fixture on the Sunset Boulevard/Wilson Street West sidewalks (and sometimes beyond) with his big Golden retriever, Bailey.

Mom's not as mobile as she once was, not to mention the fact Bailey is 88 pounds and pulls like a Clydesdale when he's in a hurry to do his business, so dog-walking duties have fallen to Boychild and me for the next while.

This is fine. It's nice to walk the dog, especially when it's not raining. I just have to convince my wonky appendages of this truth. It's something of a family legend that Mom would always know Dad had been working on something by following the trail of blood. Don't get me wrong; Dad's a master at a lot of things, including building and fixing things, but there were often scrapes and bumps along

Suffice it to say, Dad has met many folks on his daily walks with his dog and they are a popular pair.

Well, recently, Dad had a bit of a disagreement with a stepladder on the deck, and the subsequent break fall won him an ambulance ride to the emergency room and resulted in a broken heel and cracked ribs.

He's in a cast for the summer and won't be bearing any weight on that foot for a while.

I didn't immediately panic about the smear of blood across his forehead because it was quickly evident there was a gash on his finger - hence the blood trail.

Dad doesn't go easy on himself, but he's tough. He broke his foot several years back and walked on it for weeks before deciding he should get it checked out.

This time of year, turtles are prevalent on our roadways, and the Nature Conservancy of Canada is asking motorists to give turtles a "brake."

We are now in an active period when turtles are moving from their usual habitats and motorists encounter turtles on busy roads in major centres, on back roads or on the way to the cottage.

Turtles are vulnerable especially between now and October.

Like other reptiles, turtles are cold-blooded so basking on gravel, sandy road sides or warm asphalt feels good on cool spring days. Adult turtles set out to mate and find nesting sites.

In late summer and early fall, newly-hatched turtles travel from their nest to a nearby wetland or water body.

While a turtle's shell can protect them from predators, it's no match for a car.

Turtle deaths are a major issue in some parts of the country, and all eight turtle species in Ontario are at risk.

The Blanding's turtle is more endangered than pandas. In Quebec, six turtle species are provincially designated as threatened or vulnerable.

When a turtle is struck by a car, it can have a bigger impact than just the loss of that one turtle. Studies show just a five per cent increase in annual mortality can put an entire population at risk of decline.

We encourage motorists to slow down when they see a turtle on the road and check to be sure they can safely steer around it.

If you want to help, ensure your safety is paramount on the roadways. Move the turtle in the direction that it's crossing. For smaller turtles like Blanding's and Midland painted, simply pick them up and carry them across the road.

If you're helping a snapping turtle, be wary of their spiked tails and sharp snouts. They can be heavy too - up to 75 pounds.

To move these guys, lift them using their "handles" on either side of their shell by the tail and move them like a wheelbarrow across the road. Some people may carry turtle gear in their vehicle.

A shovel and a car mat are handy to help guide the turtle.

Pushing or shoving turtles across roads with your feet or sticks isn't advisable. Their shells aren't as thick underneath, and rough pavement can do a lot of damage.

Other threats to turtles include habitat loss, invasive species and illegal collection for the pet trade.

Whether you're a turtle helper or you drive on past them, please just be kind to them.

A while back Mom decreed Dad was no longer allowed to climb onto the roof.

We have now suggested that with eight decades under his belt he has earned the right to tell other people to climb ladders, including

stepladders. When we went to see the orthopedic surgeon about Dad's heel - the same doctor who performed my knee scope a couple of years ago - I couldn't help but point out my lineage: Dad with his new cast, Mom with her cane. There may be some rickety framework going on.

"I come by it naturally," I'll tell my karate family as I break fall awkwardly.

My dad has given me a lot of good stuff, too, like a sense of humour, an ability

to problem solve, and a willingness to help others and a desire to make things right or better. Also, while both my brother and I may not always (ever) be the most graceful and coordinated creatures on the planet, we're tall enough to hide things on the high shelves, which is a good aspect of the framework. Happy Father's Day, Dad. Thank you for everything and I hope you heal quickly!

PERTH'S JOY AVENUE RESIDENTS' CAR COUNT DIFFERS FROM TOWN'S TRAFFIC STUDY DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@ metroland.com Two residents of Joy Avenue in Perth are disputing the results of an old traffic study after their own observations differed from those collected by town hall.

Joy Avenue residents Peter and Dorothy Whitehead, who have lived on the street since 1976, sent a letter to Mayor John Fenik on May 2, over concerns about traffic on the street.

The street has been in the news lately because of plans to build an apartment building at the intersection of Joy and Kippen Street, though the couple said that it is a development "which we support."

Their concerns rested more on "safety, speed, and volume of traffic on Joy Avenue," they wrote.

The couple counted 642 vehicles using the road during a five-hour period on Tuesday, April 30. During a three-hour period the next day, Wednesday, May 1, they counted 311 vehicles, which they claim was a "far cry from the quoted 77 vehicles in the 2009 traffic study," using the street on a daily basis.

Further to this, "the stop sign at the bottom of Joy Avenue and Leslie seems to be a suggestion," to motorists.

By their estimate, "Seventy per cent of the cars roll through, 20 per cent come to a complete stop, and 10 per cent blow right through."

CHILDREN'S WALK "Joy Avenue is a small road that was relatively calm until the installation of traffic signals at the corner of Leslie, Isabella and Wilson streets," they wrote.

"Joy Avenue then became a shortcut and a speedway for cars," trying to get from the south side of town to the north, and vice versa, hoping to bypass busy downtown roads.

They were concerned for the children walking to the nearby Stewart School. Students can access the schoolyard from the intersection of Leslie and Joy. There is also a daycare on Joy, and young people also use the street to access the Perth pool beside the school.

"We believe some calming measures must be taken," they wrote. "These would include speed bumps." They also called for an "increased police present to really crack down on speeders," and lowering the speed limit from the current 50 km/h, which they wrote was "just too dangerous for these streets."

While we want to do "all the things," we're also on a bit of a mission to ensure our kids tell us they're bored and seek out their own backyard adventures.

With that, I'm going to ask the kids for a bucket list of local activities and things they'd like to do. I'm

likely going to have to ensure "go for ice cream" is on their list only once as I know it'll be requested several times.

Here's what I'd love to do on our bucket list: enjoy a beach day at Murphys Point; do a crafternoon at the library; create a cosy fire pit area in the backyard; hit the links; hike at Rock Dunder; make homemade popsicles. What's on your summer bucket list?

FREDERIC REMINGTON AT HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY MEETING The Perth and District Historical Society turns to the visual arts of paintings and sculptures for its June 20 meeting and the historical images of Frederic Remington's work.

Frederic Sackrider Remington (1861 - 1909) is well-

known as an artist of the American West. In a body of work that includes over 3,400 flat works, 22 subjects in bronze and eight books, Remington explored the frontier between civilization and the wilderness. He placed an emphasis upon

the "types" who shaped and were shaped by the frontier experience: cowboys, soldiers, mountain men, explorers, coureurs de bois, voyageurs, and peoples of the First Nations.

From his earliest work in magazine illustration to masterful oil paintings created at the end of his career, Canada was central to his basic concept of North America. For him, the frontier was a region of international scope. As an historical and cultural backdrop, the Canadian stage was equal to that of the U.S., and for some of his purposes, superior. And, throughout his life and career, Remington was deeply tied to the culture and landscape of the eastern woods and waters with

Quebec, Ontario and northern New York a persistent focus of his work.

Laura Desmond, education specialist at the Frederic Remington Art Museum in nearby Ogdensburg, N.Y., will present an overview of Remington's Canadian subjects, illustrating her presentation with a wide range of Remington's paintings and drawings.

Along the way, she'll explore ways in which his Canadian-themed works are both typical and distinct from those depicting his U.S. subjects.

Desmond has worked at the Remington museum for two years. There, she creates educational programs that expand and deepen

understanding of Frederic Remington's work, and of art and artmaking more generally.

She also assists the museum curator in the design, research, installation and presentation of exhibits at the museum. She has previous museum experience in collections, exhibitions and program delivery at the Potsdam Public Museum and at the Richard F. Brush Art Gallery in Canton, N.Y. (nee Taylor) passed away peacefully on Saturday May 25, 2019, with family by her side in her 84th year. Survived by her husband of 62 years, Roy Moffatt.

Her son Rod (grandsons Zachary and Oliver). Her daughter Rhonda (pet canine Stella) and her companion Dean Livingston.

Fondly remembered by her brothers Clarence (late Jean), Harold (late Melba), and her brother-in-law Bob (late Karen).

Dearly missed by many nieces, nephews and close friend of the family Dell Bower.

Friends were invited to visitation and the service with the family at the Lannin Funeral Home, Smiths Falls on Friday, May 31, 2019.

A private graveside interment took place immediately following the service at the Merrickville Union Cemetery.

Following the interment, a celebration of life took place at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 95, Smiths Falls, Ontario.

The family wishes to thank all who attended the visitation and service as well as those who have offered condolences. They also wish to thank the medical staff at the Merrickville District Health Centre, Edythe’s home-care team, the Smiths Falls and Kemptville Hospitals, the Ottawa Heart Institute, Paramedic Services (particularly Mitch and Joel), and the Fire Services whose efforts were commendable in light of the day.

Boone, Stan

September 29, 1929 - June 2, 2019 To the well-organized mind, death is the next great adventure. Stan’s family paid tribute to this amazing husband, father, brother and grandfather on June 10th at Pinecrest Cemetery. “Stan the Man”, 89, was known to all as a perfectionist, sharp witted, and readily gave his advice or his opinion on any topic, “mostly construction”. Stan founded SC Boone Plumbing Services in Ottawa in the ‘60s and continued plumbing up until he built his last house in 2014. Stan passed peacefully Sunday, June 2, 2019 at the Ottawa Heart Institute, after a lengthy battle with heart issues. Stan leaves behind his loving wife Enid (Callaghan) of 70 years. Daughters Judi (Tim), and Wendy, will miss Stan more than words can say. Stan had three amazing grandchildren, Jesse (Amanda), Cole (Sophie) and Emma. Fondly remembered by his good friend Gerry Wichers-Schreur. Will be sadly missed by brother Jim, and brother-in-law Danny Callaghan (Diann), and many nieces and nephews. Terry will be remembered by his loving wife Joyce and devoted sons Zachary (Alicia) and Curtis (Kayla Swanson). He is also survived by his sister-in-law Lois, siblings Dwight (Colleen), Dave (Mary) and Cheryl Hill (Bruce). Terry was predeceased by his father George, mother Bernadette, and brother Jack.

With a BA in English and Master of Religious Education, Bernadette was a passionate educator, teaching in Arnprior, Kingston, Brantford, Iroquois Falls, Alameda CA, and Newmarket; she later served as a resource person for the Catholic Office of Religious Education (CORE), Archdiocese of Toronto, and finally as Director of the National Office of Religious Education for the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB), in Ottawa. Bernadette was a loving mother, grandmother, and aunt who especially enjoyed nature and the outdoors with her sons and grandsons. She loved to cook and bake for her family and friends and was a voracious reader.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband Bill Y. McVey and two sisters Betty (late Bill) Amos and Patricia “Patti” Hill (May 17th, 2019). Diana is the loved mother of Bobby Steer of Nanaimo, B.C. and has two granddaughters and great grandchildren whom she loved dearly. She leaves behind her dear brother Roy Albert Philip (Lise) Mayer of Ottawa, Ontario and brother-in-law Jim Hill of Perth, Ontario.

Diana will be fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A special love and thanks to her nephew Stewart Amos, Denver Colorado for his love and “friendship through many years”.

Diana brightened the lives of many special people with her engaging personality, her happy laughter and her infectious joy of living.
