Kilt Run explodes with even more runners on roster By LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com

EMC News – It looks like a new Guinness Book of World Record is on tap if this year’s roster for the fourth annual Kilt Run is any indication. There are 2,108 participants signed up for this Saturday’s largest running event in kilts. “We cap it, we have to,” said Mary Stewart, one of the major organizers of this event. “We have a lot of fun… people have commented on how much fun they have here.” Stewart and the other 149 volunteers have been gearing up for this event since last year. They open registration in January and it fills up right away, she said.

“We get more and more people every year,” she said. “And we’re always adding new things.” The numbers have increased since the run’s inception with 1,089 runners setting that initial record in 2011. Last year, 1,764 people took part in this event. Some new events this year are the caber toss demonstrations in Stewart Park and there is a shortbread competition. “And we have a new race for the wee lads and lassies.” For children ages three to six, and six to nine, there will be a 200m and a 1km event respectively, set up at the town hall. “It’s just like the Kilt Run itself,” Stewart said. “The little ones will be starting and finish-

ing by going through the big castle.” At the starting blocks, a wooden castle creation has been made that stretches over Gore Street. Runners start their 8km run from here, and finish. The Lanark Mutual 5 Miler (or 8km) event kicks off at 6:15 p.m. The little ones’ races are just prior to the Kilt Run. They start at 4:30 p.m. Over the past four years, more than $35,000 has been raised for the Multiple Sclerosis Society, the main charity of the day. Stewart’s mother-in-law, Joyce Stewart, died of MS after the first Kilt Run. “We lost Terry’s mom to Multiple Sclerosis, so we have been

donating to this charity,” Stewart said. Some of the highlights of this year’s event include a haggis toss, shortbread baking competition, a bouncy castle for children, and entertainment on two music stages. There will be sheep shearing, a Medieval camp set up, and some caber tossing. “We will have a clan area where people can search their genealogy, too,” Stewart said. Perth, Scotland accepted a challenge from Perth, Ontario last year and held its first Kilt Run. They were just a few runners shy of breaking the Ontario record. This year, there will be a grand prize draw of free entry to

the Perth, Scotland Kilt Run, taking place Aug. 10. “We are also offering a new challenge this year to Perth, Australia,” said Stewart. “We want to make our event even better by offering challenges to another Perth. I will officially challenge them to a Kilt Run like we did with Perth, Scotland.” The idea is to create an international feel to the Kilt Run, and if this year’s roster is any indication, it’s well on its way right now.
