CELEBRITY GARDENER ED LAWRENCE VISITS PERTH TO KICKOFF VEGGIE GROW-OFF DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@ metroland.com Trowels at the ready, seeds at hand, and let's get ready to garden! Renowned gardener Ed Lawrence was on hand at The Table Community Food Centre in Perth on Wednesday, May 29, for the campaign kickoff for the "Great Veggie Grow Off," in which Lanark County communities square off to see which one can grow the most fresh produce for local food programs like food banks. Standing in the garden behind The Table, Lawrence commended the good work done by the organization. "Having to do what we

do with food banks, with what you're doing here, I mean, it's all marvellous ... but the fact that we have to, it discourages me," said Lawrence, the head gardener at Rideau Hall, and a regular star guest on CBC Radio One's "Ontario Today," program. "We have hungry kids, in a country, in a province, that is as wealthy as ours, that is a heartbreaker. But you're doing a heck of a job. Thank you so much." He added that, "sharing, it is a blessing. I'm more than glad to participate." For Glennis Harwig, of the Neighbourhood Tomato Community Garden in Almonte, the "Veggie Cup" may be a silly prize that has proven to be a great incentive, not only for friendly

"Tonight, a third of the world goes to bed hungry," she said. In Canada, if the Americans were to ever block our roads and seaports, "we have only 48

hours of food on our shelves before we go hungry." That is why it was important that "we grow food for our local food banks. We are filling a gap that none of our governments ever addressed."

Retirees Among Those To Benefit From New Hearing Aid Try newly released hearing aids ideal for the modern lifestyle: full surround sound, plenty of power, & no more feedback! ‡ Just weeks ago, a brand new hearing aid line was released to the public and it’s transforming the hearing experience for its wearers. Most hearing aids deal with background noise using directional microphones that focus only right in front of you--like blinders for your ears. No more! These new hearing aids process signals so exceptionally fast, they handle sound from all directions—greatly improving your ability to hear and comprehend speech, even in noisy environments. Most hearing aids have to reduce gain (amplification strength) to avoid causing

feedback. Not these! These new hearing aids eliminate obnoxious screeching and whistling before it even starts—while maintaining necessary gain. Connecting to your modern lifestyle is easy! Make hands-free calls from your smartphone, or stream audio from your phone, stereo, TV, or other Bluetooth® enabled devices. These can even be purchased with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery option. Yes, the future of hearing is here and it sounds better than ever. Call now to try these hearing aids for yourself!

part three times a week in community meals. Those meals are also meant to welcome in people who "may otherwise be eating alone," said Hart. There are no questions at the meals: "People sit down and we feed them. It's that easy." The Table has more than 150 volunteers, and Hart told his guests from around the county that "some food banks don't let their clients volunteer (with them). I'm at a loss to explain why," he said, since there are many of his clients who also volunteer at the Gore Street facility. He led the tour into the food bank, located in the basement, and admitted that accessing a food bank "is something that most people never want to do in their lifetime." There is no limit on fresh produce at The Table's Good Food Bank, with staff sim-

ply asking: "What do you feel you can use? Please take it home with you." At his facility, there is "a strong emphasis on healthy staples." The Table's "largest customer group is 50-plus," and "single parents would be the next largest cohort." Even with all of these initiatives, "none of them are addressing food insecurity," said Hart. For him, addressing income inequality "could alleviate poverty and food insecurity." The tour ended at The Table's community gardens at Last Duel Park, where staff garden co-ordinator Joanna Kowalczyk showed off the different plants and plots that volunteers were busy cultivating the late afternoon sunshine - as Ed Lawrence leaned down, picked up some vegetation, held it to his nose.

JOIN THE CAMPAIGN The campaign's weigh-in will be held this Thanksgiv-

ing Saturday. You can take part by bringing your locally grown vegetables to the following food banks, so you can add your donation to your town's tally: • The Hunger Stop, 5 Allan St., Carleton Place. • The Lanark Highlands Food Pantry at St. Andrew's United Church, 19 Clarence St., Lanark Village. • The Table Community Food Centre, 190 Gore St. E., Perth. • Smiths Falls Community Food Bank, 93 Russell St. E.

STORY BEHIND THE STORY

The Table Community Food Centre hosted the launch of the Great Veggie Grow-Off, a friendly competition between Lanark County municipalities to see which one could grow the most fresh produce for the county's food banks. While lighthearted, we wanted to look into this competition and why it is necessary, as it underlines food insecurity gaps in the county.

'START WITH HELLO': BROWN URGES PERTH TO SHARE A SMILE WITH TEENS DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@metroland.com Coun. Judy Brown wants you to just say hello to the young people you meet. "Adolescents don't feel part of the community," said Brown during Perth town council's committee of the whole meeting on Tuesday, June 11. She was talking up the "Every Kid in our Communities of Leeds and Grenville's" new "Start with Hello" campaign which, according to her presentation, seeks "to make a difference in someone's life and help them feel accepted, included, and valued." "It's a way of making young people feel part of the community," said Brown. "We, as councillors ... could do that in our community." If an older person sees, say, a group of teens walking down the street, saying hello may mean "hopefully they will respond positively." For Coun. David Bird, it's merely extending a courtesy that Perth citizens already show to people their own age, and older. "Adults that live here any length of time

acknowledge each other," Bird said. As his mother used to say, "politeness costs nothing," and saying hello would be "just an extension of what is done already," he said. While Brown and Bird may have been smiling, the town's treasurer may have been frowning on the inside, with the tabling of a report showing the town will have to write off $16,660.66 in "uncollectable" outstanding provincial offences fines for 2018. According to Brian Burns' report, the "primary reason" that the province and town could not collect was because "the offender was deceased," and the provincial offences court "no longer has the ability/authority to collect the amounts outstanding," wrote Burns. A small portion of the total amount, $157.50, was chalked up to "underpayment of administrative costs and fees." Burns noted in his report that Provincial Offences Act accounts "are not recognized on the town's financial records as accounts receivable, and therefore, any writeoff does not impact on the financial operating costs of the municipality," though these fines are "recognized as revenue as collected," he wrote.

DRUMMOND CENTRAL SCHOOL PLANTS FOR THE FUTURE AS EDUCATOR'S DREAM COMES TO REALITY DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@metroland.com Jancess Pinnock's field of dreams turned out to be the backfield of Drummond Central School (DCS). Pinnock, the coordinator of the Early Childhood Education (ECE) program at Algonquin College's Perth campus, started out with a dream of outdoor classrooms, but had no place to put them. She got the idea from the college's Pembroke campus, where forestry, nursing, and ECE students had created two outdoor classrooms in Renfrew County in 2015.

In 2016, she was visiting one of her students who was doing a placement at DCS. "I looked out the window and said, 'Is this the playground?!'" she said, recalling her amazement as she stood again in that same field on Tuesday, June 4. "This has a lot of potential." That potential was realized in front of her eyes, as her students, along with DCS students and teachers, plus volunteers from TD Canada Trust, rolled up their sleeves to plant vegetation for the four new gardens at each corner of the school yard. In 2017, Pinnock brought her ECE students to DCS to sketch

out a vision with students and staff of what they wanted to see in the yard for outdoor education spaces. The plans were drawn up based in part on these consultations and were then sent to the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB). Community volunteer Laurie-Lynn Clark was instrumental in the design of the four cardinal directional mandala gardens that were planted in the first phase. "This is phase one of three phases," she said. Over the summer, a pathway will be put in, and more trees too for phase two. By the summer of 2020, she hopes phase three will come to fruition, with the creation of a "gathering arch" in the field. "I'm very happy," she said, looking around as bankers dug into the soil, and her students ferried wheelbarrows full of plants from the school to the southwest corner. "It took a long time. We were supposed to do this last summer," with "red tape" holding up some of the progress. Even with the delay, this cohort of ECE students, the third to visit this school as part of this project, "are happy to do their part."

GREEN PRINCIPAL DCS' interim principal, Dan McRae, agreed that "today is the culmination of that work" that began in 2016. "It's an amazing reminder of what can happen when you have schools and families coming together." The four circular gardens will include perennials and annuals which will be incorporated into the school's curriculum where appropriate. "Being in a rural community, we have many family members (who) respect the outdoors ... and want their children to respect nature," McRae said. While the school's 75 students will be going off on their summer break at the end of June, the plants will not wither in the sun thanks to a partnership with the

school's before-and-after-school program, which will maintain the plants as part of their summer day care program at DCS in July and August. "We are fortunate to have such a large space to work with," said McRae, who grew up in Toronto, where such generous green space at schools in not very common. "We are taking advantage of the space."

MEEGWETCH Mireille LaPointe, a Westport resident who also teaches at St. John Catholic High School in Perth, spoke to students at an assembly that morning. She told the students that her Indigenous Algonquin name translated to "the person that gathers rice on the water," so it carried with it an agricultural tone. She lives on a farm with her husband, and she told the students to give thanks for the land, and to say thank your or "Meegwetch" in Algonquin to all things as they planted that day. "We have to say thank you to the seeds," she said, as well as giving thanks to the birds and water and butterflies. "It's so important to remember to say thank you."

WE HAVE CLOSE CONNECTION TO RAPTORS WIN As basketball fans across the country watched the Toronto Raptors make history with the first NBA championship win by a Canadian team June 13, it was doubly sweet for our neck of the woods. The sport experienced a boost in popularity and nowhere was it felt more than in Almonte, which boasts the birthplace of the inventor of basketball, James Naismith. Local, national and international media descended upon the town, who experienced more than their 15 minutes of fame, capitalizing on the chance to highlight one of their most famous sons. The community celebrated in its own way with a series of four viewing parties where residents were invited to watch the finals on the big screen. It showed Canadians and the world just how much community and basketball pride Almonte has. What a great sight to see the Almonte Old Town Hall parking lot filled with fans armed with lawn chairs and youth shooting some hoops while the Naismith Basketball Association engaged with visitors about Naismith. Kudos to the Municipality of Mississippi Mills, the volunteers and businesses involved in the organization of those parties. Naismith Basketball Association's Kimberly O'Connell brought the idea for the viewing parties to the municipality and indicated the association is "just so ecstatic to see everyone as happy about basketball and proud of our hometown." We assume everyone knows Canadian Naismith invented basketball in 1891, as anyone from around this area has either heard the story, visited the Dr. James Naismith Museum at the Mill of Kintail, or has participated in the Naismith association's 3-on-3 festival. But not everyone does. The Raptors playoff journey offered a great opportunity to tell that amazing story and shows just how proud Almonte is of the sport's inventor and the impact his contributions have had around the world. If you haven't been to the Naismith museum, it's worth a trip. Not only will you get to learn interesting facts about the man, including how a game he played in his childhood, "Duck on a Rock," ended up as inspiration for inventing basketball, but the museum shares space with the Robert Tait McKenzie collection, another famous Almonte native, and the two were boyhood friends. Not to mention there's a chance to explore the beauty of the Mill of Kintail Conservation Area. This spotlight on the sport is introducing new generations to the story of its history, which brings a new appreciation for Naismith, his humble beginnings and a love of the game. And that's just what Naismith would have wanted.

WHO WE ARE

WE THE NORTH ... ARE HEADING EAST ON VACATION LAURIE WEIR CELEBRATES ALL THINGS SPORTS, WHILE PACKING FOR NEWFOUNDLAND LAURIE WEIR Column

What a win for our Toronto Raptors over the Golden State Warriors on Thursday, June 13. It was 6ix in 6ix, (appropriate) and the first time in Raptors' history to hoist the Larry O'Brien trophy. Every Canadian from coast to coast celebrated basketball - not hockey - and this milestone victory. Impressive were Kawhi Leonard who was named the series' MVP, and his mates, Kyle Lowry and Pascal Siakam, who each had 26 points in the 114-110 championship win. The Warriors were looking for a threepeat, and their fourth title in five years - not this time. I'm also enjoying Brooke

Henderson's victory. The young Smiths Falls native earned her ninth career win on the LPGA Tour, eclipsing the most wins by Canadian golfers Sandra Post, Mike Weir and George Knudson. She won the Meijer LPGA Classic with her mom and dad, Dave and Darlene Henderson, right by her and Brittany's sides. Pretty classic for Father's Day. While basking in the sports glow of the week, I'm packing to head to Newfoundland. Sweet Baby's siblings are anticipating our arrival and have already started baking and planning family suppers (I say dinners, and I was quickly schooled on that last year in Labrador). There are two sisters and a brother to meet. I've rented a car and anticipate seeing whales, breathtaking

icebergs of Atlantic Canada, and so much coastal beauty I will need to pack nothing but memory cards. It's a bucket-list trip, one where I will take part in a screech-in. This is a tradition in Newfoundland for visitors (mainlanders) to hit a pub in St. John's, recite a short verse, down a shot of screech (very strong rum), and then kiss a cod fish. I can't make this stuff up. "You have to take her trout fishing," says one sister from Labrador. "There will be so much for her to take pictures of she won't know where to start ... and she couldn't understand us, wait until she gets to Newfoundland!" I know I won't be gutfounded when I leave. Just stay where you're to, gang, til we comes where you're at. Special thanks to our home team for taking care of our kids and the condo while we're away. Many years ago, when I was still employed as a reporter with The Perth Courier, I covered the waste management beat. As you may recall, that's how I became a bit of a recycling freak, which has led to many family "discussions" and has resulted in me being solely responsible for tearing the plastic film out of tissue boxes so that we do not contaminate the cardboard recycling stream. Let's just say I'm taking one for the team. Back in the 1990s, a friend of mine headed the now-defunct county waste management department. I learned a metric tonne about engineered landfills versus dumps, provincial and municipal regulations around garbage, and the highly inflammatory politics surrounding the idea of building a landfill site in someone's backyard. At the time, the county oversaw recycling, too, which is how I came to understand those contaminated loads, markets for recyclables, materials recovery facilities and how expensive it all is. Eventually, when the department was

dismantled and the local municipalities assumed responsibility for waste management and their own recycling, my friend moved on to a new job that provided him with a more national and international perspective on waste management. I remember talking to him not all that long after he started his new job. We were discussing recycling and the new municipal programs and markets. He said something like, "It doesn't matter. It's all getting dumped in the ocean anyway." What? I didn't believe him. Or I didn't want to believe him. My logical brain was telling me

that, in his new job, he was very likely in a position to know these things. Nevertheless, I protested a bit. How could this be true? We had worked so hard to do the right thing. It was something he had believed in, too. I couldn't tell at the time whether he was simply defeated or perhaps just a bit cynical. It doesn't necessarily mean that we are very bad at recycling (although in some jurisdictions this may be true). It mostly means that we produce too much material and there is no market to actually recycle a lot of it. That was almost 20 years ago. And here we are today, with serious alarm bells going off about plastic in our oceans, not to mention the shiploads of Canadian garbage that somehow make their way to far-off countries. Turns out my friend was right. It has taken far too long for humans to realize we can't keep producing crud and expecting it will magically disappear. A little over 10 years ago, the same friend connected me with some editing work for the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment. I worked on a document called the Canada-Wide Action Plan for Ex-

tended Producer Responsibility, which was approved by the council in October 2009 and is an environmental policy approach that puts the onus on producers to be responsible for the post-consumer stage of a product's life cycle. It's an incentive for producers to generate less waste up front in terms of things like ridiculously excessive plastic packaging and printed materials and

hazardous wastes. And it would make them accountable for what happens to items like electronics at their end of life. So, I'm good with concepts introduced recently by the federal government regarding banning certain plastic products starting in 2021 and placing the onus on producers. Municipalities and consumers can't do it alone. The action plan seemed so logical at the time and I wondered if politics would

ever allow us to get there. No matter your political stripe, we have to do something, and it's going to cost us, one way or another. Also, if we could get rid of the plastic film in tissue boxes that would be awesome. LANARK COUNTY HEALTH UNIT UNCERTAIN OF FUTURE DIRECTION AFTER APRIL 2020 DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@ metroland.com Changes to how health care is delivered across Ontario has the county's health unit concerned about its future direction. "These days, we don't know what will happen to us after April 1, 2020," said Jane Hess, director of healthy living and development for the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit, during a presentation to Perth town council's committee of the whole on Tuesday, May 7. "How do you plan, longterm?" asked Coun. Judy Brown. "We don't know," replied Hess, adding that the changes being proposed by Queen's Park meant "a change in funding," and

she noted that "the work on the ground with out municipalities won't change." Hess did add that, at the ministry level, "I'm not happy with what's happened," but when they get more details the health unit will be able to plan accordingly. When it comes to public health inspections, dieticians, nurses, and others employed by the health unit, those employees will continue to do that work. "The downloading will cost municipalities," said Mayor John Fenik. "It's very much in a state of flux. The Ford government is proposing new Ontario Health Teams, but Hess told council that while the health unit will consult with these teams, they will not be a part of them. "We will be at the table,

but we will not be a part (of the teams)," said Hess. On another matter, while infectious diseases are not as huge of an issue as they once were in Canada, recent measles outbreaks across the country have shown that "we still have to maintain a watchful eye," said Hess. Public health nurse Alexis Green, in discussing the health unit's strategic plan for 2019-2022, said that when it comes to matters like the recent flooding in the area, "we want to collaborate on sharing information." One of the big concerns that the strategic plan touches on is transportation, which Green said is "a very big concern for people ... We don't have the population in our area to provide public transit."

Otter Lake Outlet and Bass Lake Outlet Studies The Township has engaged an independent engineering firm, JP2G, to: • review the current Otter and Bass Lake outlets, • determine the range of technical options available to address stakeholder concerns; • conduct inclusive and informed public consultation; and • determine a preferred option for changes to the outlets, if any. The consultation program provides many ways for interested parties to become involved: • You can complete an online feedback survey here: o Otter Lake: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/SMH3XBZ; o Bass Lake: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/SNXYLM3; o paper copies available by contacting stephena@jp2g.com; • You can review past Township reports, resolutions and correspondence related to the topics here: http://www.twprideaulakes.on.ca/news-events/notices; • Public/Town-Hall meetings will be held. o Bass Lake: Saturday June 22, starting at 8:30am located at the South Elmsley Municipal Complex at 441 Highway 15; o Otter Lake: Saturday June 22, starting at 10:30am located at the South Elmsley Municipal Complex at 441 Highway 15; • At the public meeting JP2G will provide an overview of the studies’ context and history, public feedback received to date, options for the outlets, and field public questions; • Groups and/or members of the public can register as a delegation for the public meeting to allow them a chance (5 minute maximum) to share their views with the audience. If you would like to register as a delegation, please email or call Stephen Arends at stephena@jp2g.com or 613.828.7800 x229. NEW GROOMING EQUIPMENT BENEFITS MANY AT MURPHYS POINT The 2019 ski season may be over, but a new piece of equipment funded by the Perth and District Community Foundation is expected to benefit skiers at Murphys Point Provincial Park for years to come. The Tay Valley CrossCountry Ski Club (TVCCSC) and the Friends of Murphys Point Park partnered in 2018 to seek funds to purchase a new Tidd Tech snow groomer, which would provide the equipment needed to accommodate all the different types of weather conditions. TVCCSC focuses on offering cross-country skiing to all levels of skiers, and has an agreement with the park to groom trails for both classic and skate skiing. The club offers a Jack Rabbit ski program for chil-

dren and workshops for adults who want to learn more about the sport and improve their skills. There is also an annual loppet race, which takes place as a fundraiser. St. John's Elementary School uses the ski trails for its own loppet each year. "The ski club strives to offer the best ski trails possible regardless of the weather conditions," said Drew Lampman, TVCCSC president. "The park receives approximately 2,000 visitors each year who take advantage of the trails for skiing, snowshoeing and hiking." The ski club had two groomers prior to the recent purchase, including a Ginzu groomer purchased in 2015 used to groom and track set the main classic trails. A Tidd Tech pur-

chased about 13 years ago was used primarily for the skate ski trails. "We wanted to replace the Tidd Tech because it was deteriorating," said Dave Reesor, the club's chief groomer. "It is now less effective at cutting up and smoothing out the snow, but we are now using it at the Lally Homestead to help improve the trails needed for the Jack Rabbit kids program." The Friends and the ski club have worked together on various projects to benefit the park over many years, including a successful fundraiser with the Rideau Trail Association to rebuild a bridge along the McParlan House Trail that had been destroyed by flooding. GWM HOSPITAL AUXILIARY CELEBRATES SUCCESSES The Auxiliary to the Great War Memorial Hospital in Perth held its annual general meeting on May 15, and among other business learned that over the past fiscal year the auxiliary donated $44,829 to the Perth site to cover the donation of capital equipment, such as six vital signs monitors for rehab and medical/surgery, and four stretchers and some patient chairs for the emergency department. There were 16,372 hours logged by volunteers over the past year, working in the gift shop, Hospital Equipment Lottery Project for People (HELPP) lottery sales, information and portering, meal assistance, crafts, knitting, clinics, telephoning and at various fundraising events. Our excellent GWM Gift Shop alone turned over a very significant donation to the auxiliary from the shop, as well as proceeds from their Hug-Me-Bears and Christmas raffles. The annual tourtière fundraiser (over 1,000 pies -

a record!), the Christmas Fair and the Sweet Thursday Valentine's Candy Sale were all successes, raising funds for auxiliary projects. The HELPP lottery donated $18,601 to auxiliary funds, bringing the total they have raised since its inception (in 1992) to well over $450,600, and heading for half a million! Honours and awards were presented to many of the members, representing thousands of hours served. Auxiliary life memberships were awarded to Emily Menzies and Shirley O'Connell for leadership and executive service, and to Pat Crompton for longstanding and reliable service. Mary-Lyn Easter received honours for completing 10,000 hours of volunteer service, and Merle Barry for completing 40 years. Special appreciation certificates were awarded to several non-auxiliary members: Father Brian McNally of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church for his help with the chapel renovation project com-

pleted this year; Mr. Bill McCaw for his many hours of labour to repair and refurbish the HELPP lottery box and cart; and Brian Perkin of Lake 88.1 Perth radio for the amazing publicity he donates on his radio station every year for the auxiliary's projects and fundraisers. The Auxiliary to the GWM Hospital consists of over 100 members who donate their time, energy and talents to the local hospital. They are always open to new members and encourage anyone who is interested in volunteering to contact HR at the hospital for further information on the areas in which volunteers are needed. 2022 will be the centennial of the Auxiliary to the Great War Memorial Hospital and we look forward to celebrating this milestone in our history. Appreciation is expressed to all the members of our community for their ongoing and enthusiastic support of our endeavours! – Submitted by the GWM Hospital Auxiliary

MISSING PRIMATE FINDS OWNER AFTER NIGHT AT DRIVE-IN LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com A little girl's beloved stuffed monkey made his way around social media Sunday, June 9 after being inadvertently left behind at the Port Elmsley Drivein Saturday night. The Secret Life of Pets 2 was playing on the big screen, and reports say the missing primate, named Coco, hung out with a group of scouts for some time as well. Sunday morning, on the drive-in's Facebook page, there was a photo of Coco the monkey asking readers, "Is anyone missing me? I'm sure missing them!" It didn't take long before the

Port Elmsley Drive-In photo Coco the stuffed monkey. monkey's story was shared almost 300 times on social media, and Courtney Hartwick announced, "That's my daugh-

ter's. She's going to be so happy." Hartwick said the monkey has been around for seven years having had his eyes fixed by Nana Brenda Wark. In talking with the Perth Courier soon after the incident, Hartwick said her daughter, Layla, 7, has had the monkey since she was seven months old. "Layla said she was happy because Coco wasn't alone, she's never slept a day with him," she said. "She's is anxious to have him home."

HISTORY OF THE DRIVE-IN The Port Elmsley Drive-In opened in 1953 by Bill Williams, who had, as legend has it, won

the land in a poker game. The drive-in closed a few days later as the land was so marshy that cars were stuck in the quagmire during opening weekend. Tons and tons of gravel were then trucked in and the drivein was back in business, until 1997. Three years later, longtime employee and manager of the Soper Theatre in Smiths Falls, Jan Stepniak, purchased the drive-in and reopened it. In 2007, the Bird family purchased the business as the drive-in now fully digital. Find out more at www.portelmsleydrivein.com or on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

RICHARDS, Wilfred

May 24, 1959 - June 16, 2010 In loving memory of our dear son, brother, brother-in-law, uncle The moment that you left, my heart was split in two, one side was filled with memories, the other side died with you. I often lay awake at night when the world is fast asleep and take a walk down memory lane with tears upon my cheek. Remembering you is easy, I do it every day but missing you is a heartache that never goes away. I hold you tightly within my heart and there you will remain. You see life has gone on without you but will never be the same. Miss you terribly Mom, Dad, Bob, Diana, Diane, Peter, Janet, Mike and families

We’ll show you how!

Want to get your business noticed?

The Weatherhead Brew Co. will be celebrating its grand opening on Saturday, June 15. The party goes from 7 to 10 p.m. that day as the business raises a glass to celebrate. Tickets are $10 (call 613-201-BEER (2337). There will be a food and a live band, King of the Swingers, for the parking lot party, a chance for "a celebration to welcome people to the place," said Brendan Cline, who jokes, does everything needed from sales to design to tending bar. "It's whatever they point me at," he said with a smile, as he settled at the bar on the morning of Wednesday, May 22. There will be tours of the facility on offer that evening, since "we don't have any secrets here! We want to get people as involved as possible." The brewery owners purchased the building at 29 Beckwith St., in March of 2018, but did not start selling beer until this past April. "The building is quite sizable," said Cline. "(There is) a lot more room for growth." The building used to be the home to the Perth Pepper and Pestle company, but there are several neighbours nearby he said he is hoping to sell to, like the Perth Royal Canadian Legion, which is right across the road, and the Perth Curling Club, just on the other side of the Tay River. "Beer sales (are) a fickle game," he laughed. Even so, "a lot of our traffic has been local," with some Perth residents even walking over to pick up a batch to take home. "You can drive here and pick up your beer," he said.

RENOVATIONS

Call 1-800-263-6480 to plan your advertising campaign today!

During a tour of the facility, renovations evident. There are plans for a new bar space, more tables, and retail, as well as a patio for the summer season, facing the river. There are even hopes for a dock on the Tay, though this is just a dream for now. The facility already has its first wedding rehearsal dinner booked for June, and they also want to use the space for community events as well. Co-owner Andrew James dropped by during the tour to say that the location was perfect, that he had counted the 300 steps from town hall on Gore Street East, through the Tay Basin, underneath the Drummond Street bridge, up beside the Legion, and toward the brewery.

Desmond Devoy/Torstar Brendan Cline pours a tall one of Weatherhead Brewing Company's finest suds behind the bar on Wednesday, May 22.

BREW FOR YOU The company is brewing constantly to keep up with demand. Some beers have been doing well, such as their Waterwitch Marzen amber lager, which is an "Oktoberfest-style" brew. "Perth Brewery, we can't really compete with some of the lagers they do, so we need to carve out a niche," he said. "To be honest, we don't want to compete with that they're doing. They are on a whole other level." As such, Weatherhead does a lot of IPA's (India Pale Ales). In fact, their first brew was an IPA, and, out of 10 brews they do, six are IPAs now. "We feel passionate about that style," he said. They also have a New England IPA which he promise has no bitterness. "There's an idea of what an IPA is," he said, namely, that it is "heavily bitter, heavily hopped." But they are experimenting with flavours, to make for a less bitter taste experience, and "that's winning over a lot of people." The brewery does have a Munchies Menu catered by the Picnic Café on Rogers Road. It includes a grilled pesto and cheese, spicy Italian grilled cheese, grilled ham and cheese, and chicken satay. They still brew a single can at a time, with handwritten labels and all, with a distinctive cassette tape design. The brewery "wanted a fun way" to write out the labels, that also captured "a bit of nostalgia. It played into the beer ... direction we want to go with our beers. A little funkier, a little more out there."

TREE DEDICATED IN MEMORY OF LATE QE SCHOOL STUDENT AVERY WHITE DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@metroland.com Avery White loved nothing more than to sit under a tree and watch the wind rustle through the leaves. That is why the Queen Elizabeth Public School in Perth, where he was a student until his death, decided that planting a sugar maple tree in his honour would be best way to honour his legacy. "It is such a peaceful image of him," said Beth Stairs, a special-education teacher who worked with Avery, as she started to tear up at the end of the tree dedication ceremony at Queen Elizabeth Public School in Perth on Monday, June 10. That morning, Grade 5 students had decorated the tree with butterflies, and the assembly was told that the school community had raised more than $1,000, which would be donated to the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario in Ottawa in White's name. "I'm very grateful this little boy came into my life," said Stairs. "I've never had a better teacher. He taught me unconditional love ... He meant so much to so many of

us. We will not forget him." Principal Mark Williams told the students assembled in the school gym that the tree, planted that very morning by a crew from Hillside Gardens, would be located right beside the school's outdoor classroom, so that "Avery will be right beside you, growing and sharing with you." White will be remembered inside the school too, with a plaque in his honour placed on a wall "in perpetuity," said Williams - before going on to explain to younger students that that meant forever. He commended Stairs for her work with White, for "her bravery," in this difficult time. During her speech, Stairs invited students to read aloud from their contributions to a book of promises, and she commended the leading role students had taken in organizing the day's events. "They kinda took over," she said with a smile. "It's so lovely to see so many people who were a part of Avery's life (here)," she said, including his family. "Today's ceremony is one that is uplifting and hopeful." As for the book of promises, the students "wanted to pay it forward, by being

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
