Council puts brakes on traffic, parking committee

NEWS

By DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@metroland.com

News - The town’s traffic and parking committee has been put up on blocks. The traffic and parking committee will be disbanded following a three-to-two vote at the town council meeting on Tuesday, June 18. Coun. Jim Graff, however, had recommended holding off on any decision until the fall, since there “was that expertise” available on parking and traffic matters that could be called on with an as-needed basis, “rather than terminate it.” However, Coun. Judy Brown reported that the committee’s last four meetings had been cancelled. “It does delay things,” Brown said of the committee. “I have sat on this committee since I was first on council. It can be three months until there is a resolution,” with matters arising from the committee usually having to be referred back to the committee-of-the-whole (COW), and then back to the

EMC News - The Perth Kilt Run took place Saturday, June 22 with more than 2,000 runners taking part in the fun. The event set a new record for the number of people running in kilts consecutively. Visitors and participants alike enjoyed a variety of events that were held throughout the day, including a haggis toss, caber throw, genealogy searching, a shortbread bake-off and a lads and lassies race, to name a few.

committee. “(Now) COW will handle parking issues,” said Brown. However, Graff disagreed. “It puts all of the onus on the director of protective services,” said Graff. “We would have that much more support if we had traffic and parking. You give more people the opportunity to participate in the workings of our town.” Brown said she appreciated Graff’s wholesome view of opening up town hall committees to the public, but noted that bringing a horse to water was not always sufficient to make it drink. “It is a great practice in theory,” said Brown. “But the number of citizens you get to participate on these committees, it is not as great as you would wish it was.” Graff’s motion to defer the disbandment to the September COW meeting was defeated. “We were elected to study issues and act,” said Brown.

NEWS – Canada Day celebrations at Conlon Farm in Perth will be a fun-filled afternoon for the entire family, complete with an impressive light show at 10 p.m. The Kiwanis Club Classic Kids’ Games at the soccer fields will start things hopping at 5:30 p.m. with kite flying and a bicycle parade. Races will start at 6 p.m. as children will have some fun with the old classics – a sack race, egg on a spoon, shoe toss and more. The town council will host a barbecue with hamburgers and hot dogs and cold pop on sale for nominal fees from 6 to 8 p.m.

At 7 p.m. music on the main stage will feature the Long Sault Trio performing Celtic, jazz and Canadiana music. Our local favourite country crooning youth, Henry Norwood will take to the stage at 7:45 p.m. At 8:20 p.m. Town Crier Brent McLaren will announce the annual Canada Day proclamation and announcements at the main stage with free Canada Day cake to help celebrate. The Respectables will then perform some old classics from the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s, followed by the Ivory Quartet, a highenergy folk/rock band at 9:15 p.m. which will take the party to the grand finale light show.

Diamond will be bustling with Canada Day activity. Visitors can purchase a barbecue dinner of a hot dog or a hamburger, a bag of chips, pop or juice and a cupcake, for only $5.00 per person. While eating their meal visitors will be entertained by live music by the up and coming band, Tristan, some fiddle music courtesy of Taylor MacDonald, and other performers. Kids games will keep the little ones entertained while parents sit and relax for a bit. The annual egg toss, potato sack races and foot races will give kids and adults alike some excitement following dinner.

McLaren will then lead the group in the singing of O’Canada at 9:55 p.m. before the fireworks cap the evening. The volunteer fire fighters will gratefully accept donations at the gates to bring you future impressive fireworks displays. You’re encouraged to bring your lawn chair for the show and enjoy the afternoon and evening at Conlon Farm. FALLBROOK FUN FOR JULY 1 The Fallbrook Community Association is gearing up for another Canada Day Celebration! Starting at 4 p.m., on July 1, Fallbrook Baseball

To complete the day, visitors can pull up a lawn chair and sit back to enjoy an amazing fireworks display guaranteed to get little hearts racing. A silent auction of prizes donated by local businesses will give everyone something to bid on and add a little more excitement to the day. This Canada Day, why not make a day of it in Fallbrook?
