News – A senseless act of vandalism is not hindering the show of solidarity in Perth. Vandals may have yanked out or snapped off some recentlyplanted trees on Wilson Street, but the town has plans to reinvest and replant. “It’s really disheartening to see senseless acts like this,” said Shellee Evans, Perth’s director of community services. The project was funded by the Rotary Club of Perth and the town for the 200th anniversary beautification project in 2016.
“We want to replace the trees,” she said. “The ones that have been snapped, we are going to have them assessed and see if they can be saved.” Carol Onion from Hillside Gardens in Perth has been asked for her advice. Three different types of trees were planted along Wilson Street two weeks ago as part of the beautification project. Ontario Provincial Police, Lanark detachment, were called to investigate the incident, which they say happened between 3 and 4 a.m. on Sunday, July 7. In a police report, it was

stated that officers were on patrol of Wilson Street when they discovered several flower baskets had been turned over and thrown out and on the ground. Even more senseless and disturbing was the discovery that about nine small
trees that had been planted along Wilson Street had been snapped, broken in half and discarded on to the ground. Police stated that the trees are valued at about $150 each, plus costs to plant them. “The timing for planting these trees is key, not only for the long term viability of the trees but for the preparation of the corridor for the Town of Perth’s 200th anniversary in 2016,” the police report states. Evans added that it’s up to community residents to be on the lookout to help deter incidents of this nature from happening

again. “It’s really important that we become the eyes and ears of the police out there and to call if we see anything suspicious in nature,” she said.
