News – Despite the downpour that pulled the plug early Friday night, the three-day Stewart Park Festival was by all accounts, another huge success. From July 19 to 23, visitors from near and far flocked to Stewart Park to hear some of the top musical entertainment of the area and take part in a variety of events that has been dubbed by organizers as one of the best on record. That’s the reason why this festival is in the top 100 of Ontario. “I think it’s one of the best that folks can recall,” said John McKenty, chair of the organizing committee. “Even after the little hiccup of Friday night, we still had great days on Saturday and Sunday. The festival had to close at 4 p.m. on Friday night because of the storm. Those musicians who were to perform that night took part in some of the After Hours festivities at local eateries and, according to Rachel Morgan, intern for the festival, those musicians were also added to the weekend agenda where organizers could squeeze them in. “We had capacity crowd at Around the Corner (restaurant),” she said, as that is where some of the musicians played at an informal meet-and-greet. Morgan said the camping packages were also a better seller this year as were the After Hours button sales. “The weather, of course, we can’t control, but Saturday and Sunday were fantastic,” McKenty added. “And Joel (LeBlanc, artistic director) does a great job of putting the music together and gets a good variety so there’s a little bit of something for everybody.” McKenty said Crystal Palace was a popular venue Friday and Saturday evening where they partnered with Perth Brewery. And the patio party was also well attended. When asked about the reasons why this festival is so popular, McKenty was thoughtful.

Missing canoeists safely located By STAFF
News – Officers from the Lanark County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) assisted by the Marine Unit, officers of the Emergency Response Team (ERT) and the Snowmobile, ATV and Vessel Enforcement (SAVE) Unit have concluded a search for two missing canoeists after both men were located safe and well.
Police responded to a call from Murphy’s Point Provincial Park at approximately 11:50 p.m. on Friday, July 19 after two 30-year-old Ottawa men had not returned after a canoe trip. The initial information was that the men were nearly two hours overdue at that time. The men were found at about 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 20 and neither required medical attention.

“I think it was a combination of things really. What you hear from many as they’re leaving the park, especially first-timers was how well run and how organized it was.” History is also on the side of the festival’s success, he said. Because there are no ticket sales to judge the number of people, (but donations were plentiful at first glance) the committee looks at the vast amount of people who gathered at the two stages in the park. “Both stage areas were full… same with the children’s area – wherever you went, there were lots of people, McKenty said. “Twenty-three years… most festivals don’t last that long. We’ve got some organizational structures in place that are pretty solid that we’ve had for quite a while.” Some of the issues that are always prevalent are concerns about E.coli in the Tay, especially after a heavy rain. Friends of the Tay were on sight and they were giving out information on the possible effects of E.coli in the water. But how do you keep people out of the enticing waters of the Tay River that meanders through Stewart Park – especially on a blistering weekend where it seemed to be the best spot for any relief from the heat. “You can’t,” he said. “Unfortunately, you can’t keep people out of the water, even though we had it in the program (about possible health risks). McKenty added that the water lever was up about three inches from the heavy rain that fell during Friday’s storm. Another issue is keeping dogs out of the park during the festival weekend. People who attend the festival, do so with blankets and lawn chairs, or sometimes, people just sit on the ground. For the most part though, McKenty said there were no major issues, just a lot of good music, fun and camaraderie. “Overall, we’re very happy with it,” he said. “I think people enjoyed themselves.”
