Desmond Devoy/Metroland The Great Amazing Race was held on Saturday, July 28, raising more than $3,000 for the Great War Memorial Hospital Foundation, as about 20 teams took to the streets of Perth for a scavenger hunt of sorts, which included athletic events to taking photos inside the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital’s Perth campus, to helping strangers cross the street. Here, participants help a little one cross a busy Drummond Street, much to her delight. Pictured are (from the left): Emma Johnson, Loughlin Devoy, 5, Wynne Kennie, and Laura Barnabe.

NEW FORMAT STARTS FOR YOUR LOCAL NEWSPAPER THIS WEEK This week The Perth Courier embarks along a new path that takes it back to its roots. Readers will notice their community newspaper has recommitted itself to local news. No longer will it feature a regional section in the front half of the publication. Rather, news from Perth and its neighbouring municipalities will figure more prominently starting

from the front page. This means readers will no longer have to search deep into their edition for the continuation of that week's top story. Local breaking news, council information as well as sports and human interest features move to the lead pages instead of their traditional spot in the second section. The pagination system, which our readers have al-

so told us causes no end of confusion, has also seen an overhaul which should make reading the paper less complicated. These changes don't mean an end to all regional coverage. It just moves that information a bit further back, allowing us to place greater emphasis on the stories we know matter to you the most. We hope these latest adjustments to our format will help add to your enjoyment of your local newspaper. Please keep reading, in print or online, and thank you for your support.

DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@ metroland.com It does not get more local than Bill Wheeler. Wheeler is not only a member of the famous local maple syrup producing family, but as the new vice principal of Perth and District Collegiate Institute (PDCI), he once strode the school's halls as a student, and later, a teacher. Heck, he was even born less than a block away, at the Great War Memorial Hospital site of the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital. Any more local and he would have been born in the school itself. "It's nice to come into a school where I know so many people, a lot of familiar faces," he said during an interview in his new office on Wednesday, July 25. "Transitions can be fun an exciting."

Highlands youth The youngest Wheeler broth-

er, he grew up in McDonald's Corners in Lanark Highlands Township, and attended Maple Grove Public School in Lanark Village. His first three years of high school were at PDCI, though he graduated from Smiths Falls District Collegiate Institute (SFDCI), as he had become quite the athlete, playing baseball and football. After high school graduation, he pursued a law degree at Carleton University, and "I had no intentions of becoming a teacher at all," he said. "I was just pretty much finished my (undergraduate) law degree," with a minor in forensic psychology. It was when he was helping out with his old coach Joe Mariner, that "Joe said, 'You're pretty good at this.'" "I really got the bug ... I fell into teaching through coaching." Subconsciously, a change may have been percolating since "I was a little bored with law." But with this sudden change in his life plans, he admits he was

"scrambling," wondering "what do I need to do to be a teacher?" He got caught up on some outstanding English credits he needed at Queen's University in Kingston, and got his bachelor of education degree at D'Youville College in Buffalo, New York. After returning from the United States, he got his first job at PDCI, as a special-education teacher, also coaching football and track and field. He then was moved to Thousand Islands Secondary School in Brockville, where he again coached track and field and football, but there was an opportunity to move closer to home. He returned to the area as a teacher at SFDCI, where he was on the staff until the summer of 2017, when he got the chance to go to Athens District High School. "I really enjoy teaching and coaching," he said. "I really had the best job." However, "I felt near the end (at SFDCI), 'It might be nice for a new challenge.'"

'TEACH TO SUCCESS': NEW PDCI VICE PRINCIPAL'S JOURNEY COMES FULL CIRCLE TO PERTH

In his personal life, he is married to fellow Perthite Valerie Dixon-Wheeler, whom he married in 1995. She is a registered nurse at the Perth hospital, and the couple have two children, Megan, 14, and Maia, 11. "My life has always revolved around sport," he said. He is a member of the Perth Tay Tennis Club, and "I'd like to get back into that," and he likes to golf "as much as I can," at the Perth Golf Course. He also enjoys skiing. Life's direction While his love of coaching is clear, Wheeler is also a bit of a life coach too, though he does not explicitly say so. "I've seen a lot of students who don't see their full potential," he said. "My expectations are high for most, and high for myself." Because of the technological age we live in, he believes that "there has never been a time where students are more distracted," he said. Also, "you turn on the news, and everything is negative." He wants to see students build "a framework of confidence," he said. "You are capable of a lot ... but you've got to have a plan to get there. I want to see the students do well. I think I did that in Smiths Falls." He acknowledges that there

"But it is a reality ...(And) you will suffer if you don't have a plan." "Don't worry about roadblocks," he adds. "There are ways to get to your goals. You coach to success. You should teach to success."

DNE, TAY VALLEY FIRE DEPARTMENT RECEIVES 120 SMOKE-CARBON MONOXIDE ALARMS DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@metroland.com Message received, but not fully absorbed. When it comes to fire alarms, people seem to have the message, but with carbon detection, well, let's say the reception is a little fuzzy. "I would say the message is getting better," said Greg Saunders, the fire chief for Drummond/North Elmsley and Tay Valley townships fire rescue, during a presentation by Enbridge Gas Distribution to donate 120 combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to the department on Tuesday, July 17. One of his biggest obstacles as a firefighter is that, although people are aware that they need a fire alarm, they may not be aware that they need a carbon monoxide detector, too. Also, "people have smoke alarms, but people don't realize that there is a 10-year limit on them," said Saunders, standing outside of the Drummond/North Elmsley Tay Valley Fire Rescue headquarters at 14 Sherbrooke St. in Perth on Tuesday, July 17. "They're just not aware." People need smoke and carbon monoxide alarms (the ones donated on July 17 were combination fire-carbon monoxide alarms) for every level of their home, but for your home-awayfrom-home, the same law applies. Saunders has been making the rounds to lake association meetings, telling cottagers not to forget that their cottages

need alarms, too, "especially this time of year. It is just as important." The Enbridge Gas Project Zero campaign will provide more than 6,600 alarms to more than 30 Ontario municipalities this year, following a $200,000 investment. The company has "increased its funding to this project, recognizing its importance," said Jamie LeBlanc, representing Enbridge Gas. Since 2009, the company has handed out about 34,384 alarms to Ontario fire departments. Although fire and smoke are very visible, carbon monoxide is the exact opposite. "It's known as the silent killer," said specialist Tawnya Roberts, with the Ontario Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management. "You can't touch it, taste it, smell it." Prolonged exposure to it can "mimic symptoms of the flu. People have no idea." Exposure to carbon monoxide can make people "prone to going to sleep," and "without those alarms, you're not aware," of the danger you are in. A joint news release - from the fire marshal's office, the fire department and Enbridge - states that carbon monoxide "is a toxic, odourless gas that is a byproduct of incomplete combustion of many types of common fuels. “It is important that all fuelburning equipment be properly maintained to prevent carbon monoxide buildup. Carbon monoxide alarms are recommended as a second line of defence to protect against the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning."

THE ART OF PRINT FILM COMES TO LIFE FOR LANARK COUNTY CAMERA CLUB CATHY JAMES WRITES ABOUT THE GOOD NEWS STORIES FROM PERTH CATHY JAMES Column

One day, Sandra Jones was listening to CBC Radio, In Town and Out. She listened to an interview about two high schools that were still offering film photography as an art subject. They talked about how difficult it was to obtain items for the

courses, and how most things come from buying used or by donations. After hearing the interview, Jones put out a message to her fellow Lanark County Camera Club members for donations, and the response was incredible. She then contacted Giacomo Pinico at CBC who put her in touch with Nicole Blundell, the teacher at De La Salle high school (in the Centre d'excellence artistique de l'Ontario) and arranged for her to pick it all up. She was thrilled by the amount and quality of the items. Those film photography pieces had likely been sitting idle for a long time, and I bet it was nice for the LCCC members to see the equipment being once again useful. Another flat tire and Good Samaritan? Yep! When Lynda Davis read my last

column about Wanda getting a flat tire outside the library and getting some terrific help from the library, Lynda shared her own story: earlier this summer, she was coming out of Tim Hortons (I hate that there's no apostrophe before that s) after a meeting and while making her way to her car, a man said to her: "Your tire is flat. But, don't worry. I have the tools to pump it up again so you can get it fixed." Sure enough, he pumped it up, she made her way to Canadian Tire, and they patched it up. No charge. There are kind people out there, that's for sure. What's the best word to describe small-town living? Last week, a colleague and I were chatting about what it's like to live in Perth. While she recently moved to the area, I returned here after attending university. When

STEPHANIE GRAY Column

As I write this, it is the eve of a couple of things. First, the deadline for nominations for candidacy for the municipal elections is upon us. As you read this, there should be a list of folks who have committed to running - and kudos to them. It's also the eve of my departure for the Excited States of America with Girlchild. She is competing with her Saltos Athletics teammates as part of the

Canadian contingent at the Association of National Aerobics Championships in Phoenix, Ariz. What is the link between these two events? Civility. Or the lack thereof. If I weren't such a chicken, I'd love to buy some shoes while I'm there, scuff them up like we naughty Canadians supposedly do, and write a nasty message on their soles to express just what I think about Trump and his policies and trade wars and a whole host of other things. That would not be very neighbourly or sportsperson-like or role modelist. Plus, I don't want to be detained at the border. One of the things that distresses me greatly about the state of things right now is the rage and hatred that is bubbling up everywhere, particularly on social media. The vitriol that is part of the Trump Era is a fantastic (fantastically awful) example of this trend. Many days I open my accounts

and read some things and wonder why I torment myself by going there, but I also think it's important to pay attention to the state of this form of communication in case war is declared via Twitter. These days, people hide behind their online personas and say horrendous and hateful things. They argue with people. They put people on trial by social media. It can ruin lives. And it seems to be seeping into other forms of communication, too. I think sadly about the clerkadministrator of Lanark Highlands who recently resigned from her position as she feared for her safety due to verbal threats and a half-burned letter threatening to burn her house down. Yes, I get that people are mad about stuff, but holy heck. What makes someone think that is even close to decent behaviour? Over the last couple of years, I have seen this lack of civility escalate in alarming ways. I've been involved with municipal commu-

she asked me to describe the feeling about living in my hometown, I tried to express the small-town living mantra. Unlike the city, you don't have the ability to wander through town unknown (and therefore can't really get away with wearing pyjama pants in daylight), there is this special cup-is-full kind of feeling when you drive down Gore and constantly raise your hand off the steering wheel to greet someone. Or, when you know you can call on someone when you need help. Better yet, when you walk into the grocery store, coffee shop, library, and you rarely leave without having said hello to a familiar face. This is the word for me: belonging. It's a true sense of belonging. But if you could describe that small-town living feel in one word, what would it be? Send me your thoughts. Do you have a Private I idea for Cathy? She'd love to hear from you! Please send her a note at cathy@catscovecommunications.com

A Lanark man was fined $1,500 on July 17 in Perth court, and his fishing license suspended for a year after being caught with a prohibited-sized walleye. Charles Derou was charged under the Ontario Fishery Regulations and Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act. He pleaded guilty and was fined $500 for possessing fish of a prohibited size. He was also fined $1,000 for failing to stop for a con-

servation officer. In statement from the ministry, conservation officers conducted surveillance on Patterson Lake in Lanark County in January this year after being notified by area residents of a potential crime taking place.

The officers attempted to check Derou as he was leaving the lake, but the Lanark man failed to stop when signalled. When officers did get a chance to investigate further, Derou was found to be in possession of a walleye of illegal size.

Tariffs placed on steel by U.S. President Donald Trump's administration means that cheap foreign steel from India, South Korean and China are flooding the Canadian market, because they cannot be sold as easily in the United States and need to find other markets. From said he wants Canada to implement "safeguards" like the Eu-

ropean Union has imposed, which, although they do not ban foreign steel, use tools such as quotas to restrict the sale of foreign steel in Europe. "Canada is looking at that, as well," said From, during a telephone interview on Tuesday, July 24. But, so far, "we appear to be unsuccessful," he said. "They really don't care about us." His company has 10 manufacturing operations in the United States (including Chicago, Houston, Milwaukee, Wis., Char-

lotte, N.C., and Los Angeles), and a subsidiary in the United Kingdom, Central Wire Industries U.K., bought in 2015. However, their facility in Erin, Ont., was shut down this time last year, resulting in the loss of about 29 jobs. Even now, with the continued uncertainty over the future of NAFTA negotiations, From conceded that there is "the potential for job losses, not so much in the U.S.," at least not now. The Make America Great moves," will, he said, be of "a short-term

benefit to the U.S.," but, long term, will make the situation more difficult. "I really worry about the future." There is also a glaring irony in the company's position. "All of the steel we use in this plant is U.S.-melted steel," he said. Once the melted steel is made into wire, the finished product then faces a 25 per cent tariff at the U.S. border. While that "benefits our plants in the U.S., it's different for Perth." He could move his

While he already has Fenik's attention, From said he will be speaking to Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston MP Scott Reid and the area's MPP, Randy Hillier, shortly, to seek their support. Royal nod As though NAFTA and tariff uncertainty were not enough, his mind is also heavily weighed by Britain's "Brexit" from the European Union. The facility, based in Rotherham, Yorkshire, is facing "a difficult Brexit situation." The British subsidiary is "probably (the) last specialty wire producer in the United Kingdom," which was recognized by the Royal Family when the company received the Queen's Award for Enterprise, in the international trade category. From said he was honoured to meet Prince Charles during a reception at Buckingham Palace in June. While he said he felt "very fortunate" to meet the man who will likely be the next king (who asked him about hiring at his Yorkshire facility), he had also received news about the closing of the Grenville Casting plant in Perth, which dismayed him. The royal ceremony "was a bright day in a rather difficult year," he said. In the past two years, "the landscape is completely changed," he said. When it comes to Brexit, "there are casualties already." While the outlook is not especially rosy, he concluded the interview trying to sound upbeat. "We never give up," he said in closing.

DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@metroland.com Perth town hall is trying to be proactive in seeking out advice from local companies that may be affected by American tariffs. Ron Ladd, Perth's new chief administrative officer, told The Perth Courier in an interview at his town hall office on July 12 that he and Mayor John Fenik, and other town hall staffers, "will visit some of the companies" locally that may be impacted by U.S. President Donald Trump's recent round of tariffs on Canadian goods, "to see if there is anything we can do to help ... (by) listening to their needs and concerns." Ladd noted that Trump is only about halfway through his term of office, and "it (Trump's trade policy) is not going to go away. There's two more years of this." Perth is unusual in that most of the people who live here are employed here, and companies like 3M, Shandex soap and Canada Wire all have cross-border interests which could be affected by tariffs. Grenville Castings announced a mass of layoffs at its Perth facility recently. Ladd also said he anticipates some good economic news from Queen's Park. One of the biggest economic barriers for Ontario businesses "is the high cost of electricity in Ontario, and I think Premier Doug Ford will tackle that." (Just the day before, Ford saw the resignation of the entire board of Hydro One as well as its chair.) Ladd has already had discussions with Coun. Judy Brown, council's liaison on the Downtown Heritage Perth Business Area and the Perth and District Chamber of Commerce, with their conversation ranging from ice time at the arena to parking issues downtown. Fenik speaks out In a letter to The Globe and Mail newspaper, published on Monday, July 16, Fenik wrote about the impending closure of the Grenville Castings manufacturing plant, with its 350 job losses. "I can't help thinking Donald Trump's trade doctrine is working," wrote Fenik. "Canada's response, reciprocal tariffs on goods from specific U.S. states, will have zero impact on his protectionist stance." He cited examples such as a low unemployment rate of about four per cent, "healthy" stock markets and "growing" gross domestic product, and wrote, "if

some Americans find themselves out of work as a result of reciprocal tariffs, he isn't going to lose sleep over it." Fenik continued that "we must protect our vulnerable manufacturing sector." He urged the federal government to "enact legislation that stops the dumping of overseas products that undermine our manufacturers. Call it quotas or safeguards or security measures, call it whatever you want, just take a stand." Fenik also echoed Ladd's earlier warnings about energy costs. "Why should I pay 21 cents a kilowatt hour for electricity in Ontario to make things, when the same electricity in some U.S. states costs five cents?" asked Fenik. His third suggestion was that the federal government "must cover the cost of tariffs for manufacturers whose goods are subject to U.S. tariffs. "On a more grand scale, he urged a shift from "our current north/south trade paradigm to an east-west pattern." He conceded that "some experts will tell me it's more complicated, that my ideas aren't good ones. Know what? A mantra is growing inside me that supersedes the experts' advice. That mantra? 'Canada First.'"

Submitted/Rideau Lakes Artists' Rideau Lakes Artists' Association held a show and sale at Algonquin College in Perth, called Paint the Summer, July 14-15. Over 35 artists presented their public with displays in acrylic, watercolour and batik artwork including abstract, portraits, landscapes, and floral. Perth Mayor John Fenik and MP Scott Reid together with the representative from this year's show charity, Lanark Interval House, did a ribbon cutting ceremony to open the show. Peoples' Choice section of the show, whose theme this year was the "Love of Music", drew its inspiration from the Stewart Park Music Festival which was also running that weekend. The winner will be announced Aug. 10. A percentage of the artists' show fees together with donations from the public were presented to Lanark County Interval House.

THE POWER OF CEREMONY: INDIGENOUS ELDER SHARES THE SMUDGE CEREMONY DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@metroland.com At this ceremony, smoke actually clears the air, so to speak. On July 18, in the middle of the Lanark Highlands Township bush, north of the Sheridan Rapids, between Playfairville and Mcdonalds Corners, Indigenous leader Larry McDermott has assembled his summer students in a circle on the front lawn of Plenty Canada for their first smudging ceremony of the summer. McDermott explained that meetings between Indigenous leaders and, say, the federal and provincial governments will open and close with a smudging ceremony. "We started each day in circle, like this," said McDermott, recalling one such conference held outside of the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, Que., in the first week of January, when the mercury dipped to the -30 C mark. "We still went out there and did it." In an effort to harmonize Indigenous methods with modern ways, drum songs and oral summaries can be captured on video, and shared via a QR code, "video being the modern way to pass on knowledge," said McDermott, while keeping the oral component alive. Heat and smoke The smudge involves lighting four sacred medicines in a bowl, and then directing the smoke from the fire toward you - toward your head to clear your mind, toward your heart to purify that organ, through your hair, and other parts of your body. The four sacred medicines include leaf of cedar, tobacco, sage and sweet grass. "Plants have responsibilities that come with creation," said McDermott. Mankind can have a

Earth," he said. Sage is "a purifier," and the smoke from burning sage "will kill certain bacteria," and also "take away certain negativity." Cedar, he remarked, "is a unifier, (with) healing properties," he said. "It's part of binding the circle." As for the literal circle of people assembled before him, the circle had even more meaning. "Everybody (is) equal in the circle," said McDermott, looking around. "What is said in the circle, stays in the circle." After the sacred fire had made its way around the circle, a sacred eagle feather was handed around, giving whoever held it the chance to speak. For some including this reporter - it was their first time ever taking part in a smudging ceremony, and they gave thanks for the opportunity to participate. Wisdom beyond the circle Even in his professional life as

a municipal politician, McDermott explained to the young people that he used Indigenous wisdom and practices to stay centred. "My way of coping with the stress was a fast," he said, and going off grid for a while. Standing now on his office's front lawn, almost entirely surrounded by trees, he encouraged his young charges to find their own way of getting centred. "I'm listening to the birds," he said. "Listen to the voice of these birds. You learn to listen. Not just to hear, but to listen. Animals are incredibly intelligent ... but it is us who are ignorant. We are not superior (to nature). We are part of that web. We do not have dominion over creation." As sun glints off of the solar panels installed on the roof nearby, McDermott reminds the students that "all wealth comes from the land." By not living sustainably, "we are just killing ourselves."

MUNICIPAL ELECTION

21

ASHLEY KULP akulp@metroland.com There will be no shortage of candidates vying for council seats in North Grenville, Merrickville-Wolford, Rideau Lakes and Elizabethtown-Kitley in October's municipal election. Candidates had to file nomination papers by Friday, July 27 at 2 p.m. The following is a list of who's running in those municipalities.

North Grenville Incumbent mayor David Gordon will be seeking a third term as head of council, but will face competition from current one-term councillor Jim Bertram, newcomer Nancy Peckford

and Elwood Armour. Armour ran for a council seat in 2014 but lost. Deputy Mayor Barb Tobin will seek a fourth term, alongside current one-term councillor Frank Onasanya. They are joined by Old Town Kemptville Business Improvement Area executive director John Barclay, former OPP officer Craig McCormick, Deron Johnston, Kristen Strackerjan, Doreen O'Sullivan and Jim McManaman. The deputy mayor position is appointed by council following the election.

Merrickville-Wolford This term, the Village of Merrickville-Wolford will see a size reduction from seven to five with a mayor

and two councillors each for the wards of Merrickville and Wolford. Incumbent mayor David Nash, who is completing his first term, is vying for a second and he will face competition from current deputy mayor Anne Barr, Coun. Chuck MacInnis and Doug Struthers, who served as mayor of the municipality for 16 years before Nash took the seat from him in 2014. In the race for Merrickville ward councillor, incumbent Coun. Victor Suthren will seek another term, with Timothy Molloy, former longtime councillor, Tony Iannazzo and former Merrickville fire chief Bob Foster, rounding out the candidates.

Former Coun. Don Halpenny will seek re-election in Wolford ward, joined on the ballot by Yves Grandmaitre, Michael Cameron and Mark Scullino. As is the case in North Grenville, the deputy mayor will be appointed after the election.

Rideau Lakes Ron Holman will not seek re-election in the Township of Rideau Lakes as mayor, but will instead vie for a Ward Two - South Elmsley councillor position. Taking up the race for mayor are current councillors Arie Hoogenboom (Ward 2: South Elmsley) and Rob Dunfield (Ward 1: Bastard and South Bur-

gess). In the battle for two Ward 1 councillor positions are Paula Banks, incumbent Cathy Livingston, Kris Sheldon, Carolyn Bresee, Kimberly Dawn Brown and Marcia Cannon. In Ward 2, Jeff Banks, Marcia Maxwell and Holman will seek to fill two councillor roles.

Elizabethtown-Kitley For the first time in 15 years, the Township of Elizabethtown-Kitley will have a race for mayor after Jim Pickard announced he will not seek re-election. Pickard had been acclaimed in the last three elections. Instead, there will be a new mayor and it will either be Dan Downey (current

two-term councillor), Jim Miller (current three-term councillor) or newcomer Brant Burrow. Burrow is the co-founder of the Elizabethtown-Kitley Citizens for Open Government and previously sat on the In the hunt for six councillor positions are incumbents Earl Brayton, Rob Smith and Christina Eady, joined by former councillors Susan Prettejohn and Eleanor Renaud, former reeve Terry McDonnell, Willy Primeau, Brian Elliott, Gary Eve, Tom Linton and Gordon McFarlane. Voters head to the polls Monday, Oct. 22. Watch www.insideottawavalley.com for profiles on the candidates as the election grows nearer.

LEFEBVRE FOUNDATION FAMILY STOPS IN PERTH ON JOURNEY ACROSS CANADA Jimmy Lefebvre watched his father die from cancer two years ago, and in May, he started a fundraising walk for the cause. The Alberta man, along with his wife Kristie, and their three children: twins Kayden and Kallyn, 8, and their nine-year-old daughter Dylan, set out on a 5,100 Can-Survive Walk from Grand Prairie on May 1. They'll end up in Prince Edward Island - at Lefebvre's father's grave site - on Aug. 31. On Wednesday, July 25, the family made it to Perth where they stayed overnight with Michael McLean and his wife Krista Hearty McLean and their young daughter Emery. The old friends, (McLean said they met through the insurance business) had a chance to catch up. McLean made donations to the Lefebvre Foundation of $250 each from the Perth Blue Wings junior hockey club, and from his Father and Son Barber Shop in Perth. "It's been fantastic so far; we've been 86 days on the road," Lefebvre said on Thursday, July 26 before heading out on route to Smiths Falls, then to stay overnight in Merrickville. "It's been going really good. We've spent some time with some good

friends, and got enjoy the Perth life." Having a shave and a haircut was a highlight for Lefebvre, who has been walking about 46 kilometres a day. He's already gone through five pairs of shoes - Asics are his favourite; New Balance a close second. He said he'll go through 11 pairs of shoes on this journey. This week, he had a bit of a break though, spending time on the water with the McLeans. "These guys are intense on their journey," McLean said. "They're in bed, exhausted, at the end of the day - which is usually by 8 p.m. They have some great stories though." The tough part for Lefebvre has been overcoming his own boundaries. "There are a lot of self-imposed limits that I put on myself in the past; I don't think I'm the only one," he said when he talks about what he has learned about himself over the past 86 days. "When I find ways to be able to push through those limits, physically and mentally ..." He said the kids are resilient when it comes to live on the road. "My mom and my wife are still getting along so that's good!"

Laurie Weir/Metroland The Lefebvre Foundation received a $250 from the Father and Son Barber Shop in Perth on July 26 as Jimmy Lefebvre made his way through Perth on his walk across Canada raising money for cancer research. He is pictured with his wife Kristie, and children Kayden, Dylan and Kallyn, along with Michael McLean, owner of the barber shop. Lefebvre is a sole walker for the most part. "I do a lot of it alone," he said. "Kristie will do some of it when I go in (to the RV) for a break. On average, I'll do 10 to 12 kilometres at a time." His mother had to go back home to Alberta Wednesday to be with her friend who is dying with cancer, which Lefebvre said kind of hit home for him as to why he is doing this fundraising endeavour. The Lefebvre Foundation was created in 2016 by Jimmy and Kristie in memory of Jimmy's father, Simon.

"Dad was one of the most generous people I knew. Even when we had very little Dad was always willing to lend a helping hand." From the website thelfoundation.ca, the foundation is devoted to raising funds for programs and initiatives that raise awareness, provide education, and treatment for both physical and mental health of those affected by cancer. Money will also be used to help research the prevention and cure of cancer, raise awareness, or improve their quality of life after being diagnosed with cancer. So far, the foundation has reached more than $25,000.

PRIJATNO! BALKAN BAKERS BRING ADRIATIC TASTES TO CONLON FARM, ARENA CANTEENS DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@metroland.com For Miro and Zora Krsmanovic, the new operators of the canteens at Conlon Farm and the arena, Canada has given them much to raise a glass to. The Serbian couple used to live in Bosnia-Herzegovina, with Miro growing up about 78 kilometres away from the provincial capital of Sarajevo, in the village of Foca. But by 1992, the "situation started to get tense," as Yugoslavia started to splinter, and civil war raged through the Balkans. "We decided to leave," said Miro,

standing in the middle of his latest kitchen, this one at Perth's Conlon Farm canteen on a sunny summer afternoon, Tuesday, July 17. "There is no future (here)," he remembered thinking. Along with their children, daughter Natasa, 3, and Simo, 1, they fled to Montenegro, and then to the Canadian Embassy in Belgrade. The couple had worked in the hospitality industry in Yugoslavia, working as servers or bartenders in Croatia and other parts of the country. (Miro even remembers the excitement around the 1984 Winter Olympics - but, because of the cost and tight

security, he could only watch on television.) Welcome to Canada Exactly 10 years after Sarajevo had welcomed the world, in December of 1994, the Krsmanovic family landed in Canada, in Hull, Que., as refugees. "We didn't speak French or English. It was very tough times," recalled Miro. They began to learn French, but, in the hospitality sector in the National Capital Region, "to get a job, we needed to speak English too." In time, the family moved to Ottawa, and in 1996, Miro took the two-year hotel/restaurant management course at Algonquin College, graduating in 1998. Also in the 1990s, his wife worked at the Radisson Hotel, while he worked at the Chateau Cartier in Aylmer, Que. But the couple maintained their connections with the Serbian community, with Miro playing soccer with a Serbian team. It was through the Serbian network that they found out about a business opportunity in Smiths Falls. From pizza to Perth By 1997, the couple were running the Pik-a-Pizza franchise on Chambers Street, which they ran for 17 years. "We worked every day," said Miro, except for Easter Sunday and Christmas Day. After 17 years, "we decided to take a break." Miro soon found work with the Brookstreet Hotel in Kanata, and Zora followed suit. But, "after a few years, you missed the people connection," Miro said. "Work is work. I missed the people. You know everybody in a small town." What to do? Start up a chip wagon? "Somebody mentioned Perth," about five years ago said Miro. The contract had just been awarded to a bidder to run the concession stand at Conlon Farm, so, Miro patiently bided his time. "I didn't think about the arena," said Miro. He still had his equipment from his old Smiths Falls restaurant, and when he won the bid last year, he got to run both facilities, at Conlon Farm and the are-

Good busy "Oh, it's busy!" said Miro with a laugh, especially earlier this year when the Perth Blue Wings made the playoffs. Some days, like during their series against the Westport Rideaus, it was "just mad," he said. Normally, about 200 spectators would attend a game. During playoff time? An average of 600. Asked how he was able to juggle working at a hotel during the day, and a canteen in the evening, Miro said that his evening job is where "you are going to relax. It can be busy. But nice busy." At this point in the conversation, Zora arrived to help her husband with the evening's work. "It's fun. I really like it," she said. Her son used to play soccer in Ottawa, taking after his father, and she enthused about the condition of Conlon Farm. "It's a well maintained park," she said. "I haven't seen such a well maintained park." And there is a lot of cross-over too. "The same kids (at Conlon Farm) you see them at the arena," in the winter, said Zora. "They're really cute."

Family connections The family now has roots in the area, living south of Smiths Falls. As for his children, they too have prospered in Canada. Natasa has a masters in paper conservation from Queen's University in Kingston, and has a job at the University of Toronto managing a lab in the school library. Simo studied political science at Carleton University and now works at Global Affairs Canada in Ottawa. "All that work ... when you see the kids growing, getting jobs, you are proud," said Miro. "We made the right decision to leave." Miro has played for the Perth Saints soccer team, even taking the team over to the Balkans in 2008, bringing the 15 players to his hometown, as well as Sarajevo and Dubrovnik in Croatia. During the recent World Cup, Serbia acquitted itself well on the pitch in Russia, but, in an interesting turn from when they left what was then Yugoslavia, when neighbour turned against neighbour in a civil war, the couple found themselves at a cottage on Sunday, July 15, watching the World Cup final game - and cheering on Croatia as they took on France. "Soccer is huge over there," said Zora.

FR. BRIAN MCNALLY WRITES ABOUT HIS PART WITH THIS SUMMER'S GAMES MCNALLY Column

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Special Olympics. The website of Special Olympics Ontario relates how, in the early 1960s, Dr. Frank Hayden of Toronto began researching ways to develop a Canadian national sports program for intellectually disabled people. His work came to the attention of Eunice Kennedy Shriver and the Kennedy Foundation in Washington, D.C., and led to the creation of the Special Olympics. The first sports competitions organized under the

Special Olympics banner were held at Soldier's Field, Chicago, in 1968. During an impressive 50year history, Special Olympics has motivated over five million people with intellectual disabilities in 170 countries, and inspired millions more to support the cause: parents, family members, volunteers, coaches, officials, staff, patrons, supporters and sponsors. Special Olympics Hometown Games - Perth Special Olympics Perth & District, a chapter of Special Olympics Ontario, provides opportunities for those with intellectual challenges to engage in a variety of sports and social activities in this part of eastern Ontario throughout the year. One of its more visible annual events was initiated in 2010 by Perth's Knights of Columbus Council 3531. In collaboration with the above local organization, the Knights introduced to Perth

an annual regional soccer tournament entitled Special Olympics Hometown Games. This year's tournament is being held on Saturday, Aug. 11 at Conlon Farm, with teams from Perth, Pembroke, Ottawa, Kingston and Brockville coming together for a fun-filled day of soccer, food and friendship, all in an atmosphere of contagious enthusiasm and joy. The public is invited to the Opening Ceremonies at 8:30 a.m. I am pleased to participate each year in this lively opening ritual by offering a prayer and blessing. Mayor John Fenik and town crier Brent McLaren then welcome all participants, family members and volunteers on behalf of the Town of Perth, expressing appreciation to Special Olympics Perth & District for their ongoing fruitful efforts, the Knights of Columbus Council 3531 for their leadership and service, and the partici-

pants for their impressive presence among us. The ceremony culminates in a joyful parade of all the athletes around the soccer field, led by the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus in full attire, and with live music by Riq Turner. All those involved, including parents, family members and volunteers, deserve our gratitude for providing this and similar opportunities for these inspiring young people. The athletes are also to be commended for coming together with so much energy and joy that everyone on site is moved by, and drawn into, the excitement. Jesus praised the humility, trust and openness of those who are childlike in their loving relationships with God and others. He challenges all of us to learn from them: "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like a child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven." (Matthew 18.3)

DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@ metroland.com Indigenous leader Larry McDermott has received an honorary degree from the University of Guelph. McDermott received the doctor of laws degree on Thursday, June 14, during the school's College of Social and Applied Human Sciences' graduation ceremony, for his work with fostering reconciliation and for his duties as executive director of Plenty Canada, a non-profit organization that supports Indigenous peoples and other communities in environmental protection and sustainable development. It was a busy month of accolades for McDermott, who also received the W.W.H. Gunn Conservation Award from Ontario Nature during their annual general meeting in Picton, for his "lifelong devotion of environmental protection and social justice as these relate to Indigenous peoples and communities." Back at his office on Plenty Lane in Lanark Highlands Township, on July 18, as fresh-faced, eager summer students stand nearby or busy themselves with office work or filling

vehicles for a youth even that night at Perth's Crystal Palace, McDermott makes clear that his mind is never far from the natural world. "Oh, there's a broadwinged hawk," he says, having just sat down at a picnic bench in front of the building, the Plenty Canada headquarters carved out of the woods. His eyes drifting back down from the blue summer skies to the more earthly interview before him, he said that both awards were "pretty amazing. It's been an amazing year." The awards are nice, but they are only the product of work he has done with others over the years. "Yes, it is an individual award, but it comes from the quality of relationships," said McDermott. "It's gratifying to feel that after all these years, there

is recognition for that." But he makes sure to add that: "I didn't do it for that (recognition)," he said.

The elder's path McDermott's path has seen him take Plenty Canada from a single room in his home, set up as a humanitarian response to a massive earthquake in Guatemala in 1976, to terms as a municipal and Indigenous political leader, to being appointed as an Ontario Human Rights Commissioner from 2009 to 2016, to attending the United Nations' Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1992 and, later, the United Nations biodiversity summit in Nagoya, Japan in 2010, to, more recently, the fourth World Congress of UNESCO Biosphere Reserves in Lima, Peru in 2016. "(It's) a great responsibility," he said. "If you take

good care of the land and the water, it will take care of you." However, with climate change, "we are on a trajectory that has to shift. It all fits together. It's more than a commitment to the environment. We are part of the environment," and, as humans, do not sit in isolation from the environment. "(Biodiversity) needs to be known by all."

Listen to the Earth Just as mankind cannot separate itself from the environment, so too does McDermott believe that mankind can learn from each other - which is why he feels that western science and Indigenous world views can coexist, and draw from each other, and even compliment each other. "The smudge (ceremony) and the gavel were

equal," he said. In fact, it was only about 150 years ago that European powers began to dominate the Indigenous peoples of North America. In his address to the university graduates in Guelph last month, McDermott referred to the Royal Proclamation of 1763, signed by King George III - which, he said, some Canadians are surprised to discover is part of the 1982 Constitution. A year later, as the Treaty of Niagara was being negotiated, drawing Indigenous leaders from far and wide to the Niagara Peninsula, "there was cross-cultural knowledge," with the British Crown respecting Indigenous culture and language. Even in 1764, the roughly 2,500 Indigenous elders alerted the British that there was already too much fishing and

tree felling going on to be sustainable in the long term, and that there needed to be an understanding that "as we walk upon this land, we need to think about seven generations hence." "You can't take more than Mother Earth can give," he warned. "It's irrational. It's a fool's game to think that you can prioritize an economy and minimize an environment. It seems so simple. (But) money can distort that," which is why it is important that we "listen to the voices of the land." And by doing so, we can "corroborate what western science has seen." Thinking seven generations hence is one thing, but for McDermott, his first grandchild arrived on Dec. 27, 2017, and "I think about her future," now.

DEVITT, Robert (Bob) - In loving memory of a dear father and grandfather who passed away July 31, 2006. Time speed on, 12 years have passed, Since death its gloom, its shadow cast. Within our home where all seemed bright, And took from us a shining light. We miss that light and ever will, His vacant place there is none can fill. Down here we mourn, but not in vain, For up in Heaven we will meet again. Always in our thoughts and sadly missed, Loving daughter Crystal, John, Meredith and Bailey

PHILLIPS, Beverly Rose (Dixon) In loving memory of my special sister who passed away August 2, 2016. When I lost you! I wish I could see you one more time, Come walking through the door. But I know that is impossible, I will hear your voice no more. I know you can feel my tears, And you don’t want me to cry, Yet my heart is broken because I cant understand why someone So precious had to die. I pray that God will give me strength… And somehow get me through, As I struggle with the heartache, That came When I Lost You. Still missed and Loved more each day. Barb

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, don’t hesitate to express the passion you are feeling for a loved one. If you do not share your feelings, others will not know what you are thinking and fail to respond.

LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, if you can stay on course, things will move along quite well for you. There are plenty of distractions that may be in your way, but you must look beyond them.

SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, try not to get swept away by bad habits. Try something new and obtain a fresh perspective, whether the task is large or small. Accept challenges as they come.

TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 It’s time to trust your instincts, Taurus. When something does not seem on the up and up, you owe it to yourself to speak up. Keep in mind that others may not believe.

VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 Get outdoors and enjoy a walk through the park or a hike, Virgo. It’s what you need after being cooped up for too long. Outdoor projects also may beckon you.

CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 There is no need to go to extremes to get your point across, Capricorn. Listen to other people’s opinions, recognizing that their insight may prove valuable.

GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Your romantic life seems to be full of complicated patterns that could be perceived as obstacles, Gemini. Don’t let these things hinder your relationships. Start making changes.

LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, start planning a much-needed vacation right now. And don’t forget to look beyond your usual haunts, as there are many other options available as well.
