County’s top cop hangs up holster after 30 years
NEWS
By DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@metroland.com
News – Insp. Gerry Salisbury, detachment commander for the Lanark County OPP, looked nothing like the grizzled 30-year veteran you see in police action movies, narrowing in on his final arrest, with just one day left until retirement. Firstly, his last official day on the job will be in late October, making this past Monday, Aug. 12, his last working day on the job. “I have accomplished every goal I had set when I came here,” said Salisbury, looking even more calm and relaxed than normal, dressed formally, but not in his trademark white police shirt and black pants, sitting on a cozy interview room likely used for children, with stuffed toys in cubbies nearby. Not surprising that he chose this room for one of his exit interviews, of sorts, since, with his ever-present smile, Insp. Gerry Salisbury he is wont to put one at ease. “I shocked everybody and put in my letter,” said Salisbury, who will be turning 51 later this year. “I am leaving on a high note.” The move came shortly after a county police services board association meeting this past June in Mississippi Mills which set out the rules under which Salisbury’s successor would be chosen. But, at that time, Salisbury was not considering leaving the post he had held since 2001. That came later in the summer. “I went through two weeks of sleepless nights to make the best decision for my family,” said Salisbury of the decision he made about a month ago. “There was no ah-ha moment, so to speak… you have to seize the opportunity,” he said, echoing the quote that accompanies all of his work emails: “You can’t change what happened yesterday, but you can affect what happens tomorrow.” Already, across the hall, his temporary replacement, Stephanie Patterson busied herself with paperwork in what would become her office as of 4 p.m. that day. The office was mostly packed away, but Salisbury had been kept busy that day with officers coming in, some on their days off, with families, to say goodbye. “I have a good rapport with most of the officers,” said Salisbury. He will be staying in the area he first moved to about 16 years ago. “We were made to feel very welcome,” he said. Back then, there were only 24 officers in the Perth detachment, but then, “it evolved into a huge detachment. It amazes me…it is a hidden gem of a detachment, (where) people look forward to coming to work,” he said, growing to include seven police services boards, three other municipalities, and three detachments, in Perth, Carleton Place, and Sharbot Lake. “It has gone by like it is nothing,” said Salisbury. “I know that this is going to (tick) off other commanders (but) this is the best detachment in the eastern region, bar none.” As for his own future, while he does admit that golf is certainly in the cards, he plays his cards close to his chest saying that he has “different pokers in the fire.” But he is also ready to see what the future holds in terms of the new leadership for the OPP in Lanark and Frontenac counties. “It’ll be fun to see the new person come in with some new ideas,” he said.

Kayaking for Cancer News – On Saturday, Aug. 10, Bruce Raby and his son Nicolas began kayaking from Perth to Ottawa, completing a 110 km paddle in less than a week to raise money for cancer research. This is Bruce’s sixth year paddling for his organization, Kayaking to Beat Cancer, and his second year trekking to Ottawa. They are pictured with Bruce’s Japanese exchange student Miei Sogabe. The duo hopes to raise $5,000 for the Lanark, Leeds and Grenville unit of the Canadian Cancer Society this year.

News – The Rideau Regatta is bringing its show on the road, er, water, if you will, to the Perth Basin this week. The bi-annual event will be extending out an extra day early when a number of invited speed boats will be winding their way up the Tay Canal to the basin beside the Crystal Palace tomorrow (Friday, Aug. 16) at 2 p.m., with an OPP marine escort. While Perth’s town crier Brent McLaren may not be able to part the waters like Moses,
he will be on hand to welcome the boaters to the county seat. Many of the boat crews will have photographs of their boats ready as handouts for children. According to an email exchange from Perth town Coun. Jim Graff, one of the event organizers, most of the boats “have been completely restored and are capable of speeds over 100 km/h.” “(This) will be a great opportunity to see these beautiful race boats up close and talk to the drivers and crew,” added Graff.
