New patient loading sign to be erected at Perth hospital BY LAURIE WEIR

After last week’s fine being issued to a woman for no parking in a fire lane at the Perth hospital – which blew up on social media garnering more than 400 shares and hundreds of comments – there will be a new sign erected to show drivers where to load and unload patients, which will include a 10-minute grace period. Mayor John Fenik, who sits on the hospital board of the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital, said he brought Amanda Schutt’s parking ticket issue up for discussion. Schutt said in a Facebook post that she was issued a $150 ticket while returning a wheelchair to the hospital, leaving her four-way flashers on. She was helping to transfer her husband, Philip, who was undergoing medical care. Schutt’s post went viral as she shared her experience on the public domain which has since been deleted

or hidden from public view. Schutt said she paid the early-fee option of $75 right away. After being alerted through the town’s website about the viral post, the town checked into the situation, which included video surveillance from the hospital, and talking with the commissionaires, Perth’s CAO John deRosenroll dropped a cheque in the mail for the full refund on Monday, Aug. 21. The mayor indicated that there were two “very different stories” that came from the investigation. “A sign will be posted at the hospital which will help clarify parking restrictions,” Fenik said. Fenik also noted that he has dropped off and picked up loved ones several times at the Perth hospital and has never had any parking issues over the years. Hopefully, the new sign will remove all parking doubts, he added. “It should be going up very soon.”
