Kilt Run signs give town chance to ‘brag’: Boldt By DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@metroland.com

News – Highway 7 motorists will now know that Perth is home to the World’s Largest Kilt Run. Perth’s committee-of-thewhole voted on Tuesday, Sept. 10 to approve the signage, on Highway 7 and near the Perth Farmers’ Market, after a request was put in from the Perth Kilt Run committee and the Perth
Running Goat Club. However, Coun. Beth Peterkin cautioned that the decision might lead to unintended consequences by setting a precedent. “We’re opening the door to (signage proclaiming) the World’s Biggest Cheese,” she said, referencing the eye-catching monument near the Crystal Palace. “If someone else comes forward, we can say no,” said Dep-
uty Mayor John Gemmell. The signage costs about $1,500 each, about $3,000 in total, and will read “Perth – Home of the Biggest Kilt run in the World,” after the times it has beat Perth, Scotland. Down Under, Perth, Western Australia, has also been offered the chance to challenge Perth, Ont., for the title. Shellee Evans, the town’s director of community services, stated that the familiar blue and
white Ministry of Transportation attraction signs rent for $200 a year and are intended for fixed attractions only. “I am not sure that a claim would be part of it,” she said. Coun. Jim Boldt thought that the sign was a great marketing opportunity for the town. “The more things we can brag about, and be proud of, all the more reason to put signs,” Boldt said.

News – The anticipated savings from merging the old Perth Police Service (PPS) with the OPP are off by $50,000 because of severance costs. “We didn’t anticipate our severance costs as being as high,” said Lang Britchford, the Town of Perth’s treasurer, during a report to the Perth police services board meeting on Thursday, Sept. 12. “(But) I’m still holding firm on that number of $750,000,” in the future, he promised. “It has held its own, (my) initial messaging,” he added. In the spring of 2012, “I was asked to project out 10 years or so,” as to what savings would be had from merging the two forces. He anticipated about $750,000 per year, over 10 years. “There are still some minor variables that are unknown,” said Britchford. Now, that anticipated number stands, conservatively, as only $700,000 per year, on average. However, there were some pleasant surprises to be had that have actually helped the bottom line. The former PPS building at 1881 Rogers Rd. was expected to remain empty for three years after any merger. Now, a campus of T.R. Leger school is resident there, meaning that rental income is now flowing, after only three months of vacancy. Also, OPP costs were lower than anticipated. They had been slotted at $2.5 million, but actually came in at $2.1 million. Further to this, not as many officers went over to the OPP from the PPS as had been expected, with former Chief Pat Capello settling a severance deal with the town, and Insp. Glen Dewey retiring before the transfer. See CRUISER page P4
