County has plan in place for fentanyl ‘mass overdose’ BY DESMOND DEVOY

desmond.devoy@metroland.com

Lanark County is preparing itself for “a mass overdose situation,” of fentanyl, if need be. Lanark County Situation Table chair Stephanie Gray told a policing meeting last week that the county has worked out a plan to deal with such a situation, should it ever present itself. “There is a plan in place for that,” Gray told the Perth police services board (PSB) meeting in the Sunshine Room at town hall on Thursday, Sept. 28. Further to this, her group receives regular updates on the fentanyl situation from the Lanark, Leeds and Grenville District Health Unit. “There is progress being made,” Gray said. Gray was responding to a question from PSB chair Coun. Jim Graff about the rise of “bush parties,” where young people gather in the wilderness, with some consuming illegal drugs. Gray’s situation table has placed the fentanyl crisis as an “acutely elevated risk,” in the area, and is so far the only area of concern listed in its “environmental” column (other areas include individuals, families, and neighbourhoods.) By bringing the crisis to the table, so to speak, “it really got the agencies talking about it,” said Gray.

There are more naloxone kits available now than a year ago, which can be given like an EpiPen, or nasally, in arresting a fentanyl overdose. “OPP have not gotten them, but they are in line for them,” said Gray. Some of the PSB members were perplexed about how people got involved in such a deadly drug to start with. “Why would someone ever get involved with something like that?” wondered John Clement. Fellow board member Randy Jarbeau surmised that drug dealers could lace the drug in other drugs to really get their customers hooked, but Gray said that while that may be the case in some instances, fentanyl addiction was more likely caused by legitimate chronic pain management medications that can lead to addictions. Gray also pointed out that there are now courses for overdose survivors, dealing with everything from stress management to coping skills. She also stressed that if she was ingesting illegal drugs alongside someone else, and that person then started having an overdose, “I’m not going to get charged for being near (them),” by phoning in the overdose to 911. Graff said that a presentation he had seen at a regional PSB meeting See FENTANYL page P2

Queen Elizabeth Public School teacher Marc Baillon leaps into the air during the Terry Fox Run at the school on Thursday, Sept. 28. And his outrageous get-up? He and fellow teachers agreed to dress up in costume if the students raised enough money for cancer research. The students answered the call, raising about $665.
