News – The number of thefts in Perth would drop by 82 per cent if people would simply lock their cars. For the month ending in August, Insp. Derek Needham, the detachment commander for the Lanark County OPP, told the Perth Police Services board (PSB) meeting on Thursday, Oct. 10 that there were 23 thefts that month, but added that “that number of 23 would be cut down to three or four. It’s the same in Carleton Place, it’s the same in Almonte, it’s the same everywhere. We could reduce a lot of them (thefts) if people would lock their cars and take their possessions in at night. Quick grabs, 99 per cent of them are from vehicles.” The PSB’s chair, Stephanie Gray, reported that she had noticed a “spike” in vehicle thefts. “We’ve charged general
groups,” said Needham. “It is a fairly easy crime. One or two people can do several cars in a night.” There were five break-and-enters in August, for which investigations are continuing. Further to this, there were: • 10 domestics, four cleared, six were non-Criminal Code complaints (ie. verbal), • three drug offences, one unfounded, one charge, • two impaired driving charges, • 12 incidents of mischief, • 26 false alarms, • 13 calls to 911. Open house On Saturday, Nov. 23, from 10 a.m. to noon, the Lanark County OPP will be hosting an open house, offering interested residents a tour of the detachment, as well as more information on what they do, like the auxiliary unit.
The OPP will also be conducting an online satisfaction survey in late November, which would give time to get the survey ready, “and avoid hunting season,” said Gray. The meeting also heard that Perth PSB meetings will now be held on the fourth Thursday of the month, starting in 2014, to accommodate police statistics reporting. Market Square vandalism Something as simple as sending OPP staff to have lunch in a vandalism hot spot can help turn the tide, when it comes to complaints about loitering, littering, and vandalism in the band shell behind town hall. “I sent some of my staff to have lunch down there, which is a good deterrent,” said Needham, who also credited “a fair amount of proactive patrol. There was some illegal activity (during a recent patrol) which was dealt
with.” “That area, and the Mill Street area are perennial problems,” said Gray. “It came to a crashing halt when you guys moved in.” Coun. Jim Graff recently saw some youngsters trashing the area behind town hall – while two young parents watched on and did nothing. “It makes you wonder what’s going on,” said Graff. Needham pointed out that moving kids along is not a guarantee to disperse the problem like it once was. “With every kid having a cell phone now, it doesn’t take any time for them to assemble elsewhere,” said Needham. Treasurer Lang Britchford agreed, saying that the loitering problem has been up and down, that, once the youngsters have been “shooed off,” they wait for the heat to die down, and simply return later.

Needham was asked if decommissioned police weapons could be sold on the open firearms market. “It’s all within the police services, not on the open market,” said Needham. “We’ll see if we can get a buyer. If not, we will give an order to destroy.”

Assets disposed A letter will be sent to the OPP requesting that guns from the old Perth Police Service be transferred to the Smiths Falls Police Service. “It’s been transferred on paper already,” said Needham. “It’s just waiting for it to be physically transferred.” Other assets are still waiting to be dealt with from the old force, including two shot guns and two Tasers. “There is not a rush to dispose of them,” said Needham. “We’ll have to get rid of them eventually.”
