NEWS
Empty Bowls founder dies after battling multiple myeloma News – Jackie Seaton, founder of the Empty Bowls project which donated thousands of dollars to the local community’s food projects, died at home, Thursday, Oct. 17, after a twoyear battle with multiple myeloma. He was 68. A celebration of Seaton’s life will be held Sunday, Nov. 3 at Code’s Mill, 17 Wilson St. E. Perth. This weekend, friends are invited to Toronto to visit with the family between 2 and 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 27 at 305 Rosemary Rd. Seaton is missed by so many people, but especially by his wife, Joni Seligman; children Ami, Aden, and Gita; grandchildren, Ivan and Noam; brothers Paul and Mark and his uncle,

Alex Siegel. The middle son of the late Ann and Ben Seaton, Jackie was a real mensch. He and Joni met 50 years ago when they were teenagers in Toronto, shared lots of adventures, and then found their true home near Perth, where Seaton set up his salt-glaze pottery studio. His life was rich with interests: he played the cello, was a loyal New Yorker reader, an activist and fundraiser, a coffee appreciator, a pun-loving guy…and so much more. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Empty Bowls project (Ihanwood@live.com) or the Bloom Chair in Multiple Myeloma Research at the Princess Margaret Hospital (416-946-6560) would be appreciated by the family.

News - Lanark Highlands township once again has its very own satellite police office at the municipal offices. “We are good to go,” said Insp. Derek Needham, during the grand opening, which was held on Tuesday, Oct. 22, in Lanark village. “We can file reports (here) without having to go to Perth.” However, unlike the Lanark County OPP detachment on Highway 7, the Highlands OPP community police office will not have regular hours. “We are not going to staff it on regular hours,” said Needham. “If there is a cruiser out front, people are welcome to come in.”
The township had been in talks with the OPP about bringing a satellite office back to the township offices for several months. “The municipality has made the space available to us,” said Needham. “We are grateful to the municipality for offering the space to us.” The OPP’s previous tenancy in the Highlands was cut short because of insufficient internet service. “In terms of speed, it wasn’t worth it (having an office),” said Needham. “Now that Lanark Highlands has its high speed internet, it’s no different than being in Perth.” But the office will also be used for more than just allow-
ing community service officers Dave Blair and Dave Bird to file paperwork. “If someone is to be interviewed in something routine,” it can be done in Lanark, said Needham, saving the drive into Perth. Saving time on the road is imperative for the Lanark County OPP, which has a wide area to patrol. “It’s very large,” said acting detachment manager John Jarrett of the Highlands. As for the county, “the area patrolled is similar in size to Prince Edward Island,” so the less time spent on the road, the better. “It’s a lot of paperwork,” added Jarrett. “This helps keep officers in the area.”
