North Elmsley school parents rally to save their school at MPP’s office BY Desmond Devoy

desmond.devoy@metroland.com

Parents and students from North Elmsley Public School (NEPS) converged at the Perth constituency office of MPP Randy Hillier last Friday to advocate that their school remain open. Coming just two days after the ARC (Accommodation Review Committee) public meeting at Perth and District Collegiate Institute, one of the NEPS parents who presented that night said she was astonished at how the meeting was conducted. Andrea Young said that she was caught unaware that it was she who would be presenting that night. "There needs to be an actual public meeting (where) the board is on stage answering questions," she said, and not the ARC committee itself. "I was so disgusted the other night...They (the board) are taking the spotlight off of them and (putting it) onto us," in an effort to "get us to fight amongst ourselves...They're pitting schools against each other." Young also expressed her concerns that parents are not able to challenge the school board directly on the potential closings. "We have so many (questions) for the board, but they won't answer any," she said. The school runs from kindergarten to Grade 6, and Young reiterated a point she had made last Wednesday night that about 47 children leave Drummond/North Elmsley (DNE) Township every school day to attend classes in either Perth or Smiths Falls because that is where French immersion is offered. "It's an astonishing number," said Hillier. "I'm not at all satisfied with what the board is doing...I'm of the view that the school board have chosen to sit on the couch and let Desmond Devoy/Metroland the administrators do the job for them." Rylee Andre, 6, left, rests her chin on her protest sign, as she, along with her sister, Langley Andre, 4, right, listen to a speech by MPP Randy Hillier outside of his Perth constituency office on Friday, Nov. 18. The sisters were part of a delegation protestSee NEPS page P4 ing the proposed closure of North Elmsley Public School in Port Elmsley, Drummond/North Elmsley Township.
