Perth town council has kicked the Shadowfax colour palette issue into the new year with a public meeting scheduled for Jan. 24. Town council decided at its committee of the whole meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 5 to “postpone any further action regarding 67 Foster St.,” the address of the Shadowfax store, according to a staff report by community services director Shannon Baillon. The public meeting will also be held in accordance with the Ontario Heritage Act, and Baillon will also be publishing a notice of intention to amend the Heritage Conservation District (HCD) “to state that the painting of wooden façade features does not require a heritage permit.” “I think the key elements of that meeting will be to educate people (as to) what our heritage district designation means,” she said. “It is a living, breathing document. I’m glad we will be holding this meeting.” She added that “this isn’t about 67 Foster St. This is about we as a town and we as a council.” During the information gathering process, “it was made very clear to us that … painting wood is reversible,” said Baillon. At the Shadowfax store, however, brick work was painted, at the top level of the façade. If the brick had been “previously painted … it was grandfathered in,” she said. “Masonry or stone, it is difficult to reverse it.” “I think this store is great,” said Coun. Jim Graff. He commended the town’s heritage advisory committee for “using good common sense.” Mayor John Fenik, however, admitted that he was “really torn with this one,” calling the compromise on
