What exactly is a Pinfold?

ou’ve probably been wondering “what’s in the name” and why we decided to call the magazine The Pinfold. The easiest answer to this is that we wanted to point out just how little we know about our local area. If you ask people about ancient monuments and local landmarks you’re likely to hear the more obvious answers of Furness Abbey, Conishead Priory, Dalton Castle and some reminiscent stories of the old Roxy Cinema. It’s a rare occasion that Dalton Pinfold will be mentioned. So, what exactly is a pinfold? The pinfolds were built back in medieval times to keep stray animals in, farmers would then pay a fee to the Pinder for their release. Dalton Pinfold was first recorded on a map in 1825 and is a listed “building”. Some of you may remember there being a giant snowball in Dalton pinfold. This was part of an art exhibition across the UK by Andy Goldsworthy who wanted to raise the profile of the nations pinfolds. We hope that through The Pinfold magazine you’ll learn more about what’s in and around the Furness area. Pink Link Ladies is coming to Furness. If you are a woman in business or thinking about creating a business, then join your local business network to connect with like minded women, to help build your network and share knowledge and experiences. Are you paying too much tax?

MRC are currently sending out millions of PAYE codings for the 2011/12 tax year and based on previous years many of these may be incorrect. Employees with only one job and no other income will generally have a 747 code, if it isn’t you could end up paying too much tax. People with more than one job or retired individuals with private pensions & state pension may receive more than one PAYE code and they should check that their personal allowance of £7475 is shown on one of them (or possibly split between several). People over 65 may have higher allowances depending on the level of their income. The codings come with notes explaining what some of the items are, however these are not always simple to understand and if you have several codes it can get very complex. I would advise that you check any codes you receive and not just assume they are correct. If you want further details you can contact HMRC on the number shown in the top right of the code. Please contact me if you would like to discuss any taxation matters in further detail.

On a summers day at a top secret location in the English Lakes, two brothers made the discovery of a life time; a new mineral. The Weather Stone. This unique weather forecasting mineral has now been tested in countless locations around the UK and has the natural ability to predict the weather with a guaranteed 100% success rate. Not the type to miss such an opportunity, the brothers endeavoured to locate more Weather Stones to share with meteorologists, magicians and mere mortals. Geocaching

I

have never been geocaching. I have read about it, heard my brother go on about it, seen people tweeting about it on Twitter. I even bought a book about it. That was a year ago. But until now, I had never actually tried it. But what is it, I hear you ask… Geocaching is a worldwide treasure hunt game. You follow coordinates using GPS and seek out various different types of ‘caches’ all over the globe. Dalton alone has over 200 caches to discover. In the meantime you learn more about your surroundings and take a history trip as well as spend quality time with family or friends. Have a look at www.geocaching. com and register for free so that you can get started and find out which caches are near you.

Me and my other half took ourselves out for some exercise in hunt of the ‘Sammy’s Abbotswood Cache’ near Furness Abbey. We found out 10 that the site used to be

Barrow Borough Council’s emergency center until the 1980s and was originally a Royal Artillery Anti Aircraft Operations Room built in the 1950s.

“You have no idea how exciting it is...” We walked from Dalton to Furness Abbey, but found that the cache was on the other side of the stream and railway line. I was using my iPhone as a GPS unit using the Groundspeak free introduction application that allowed you to seek out three caches until you had to upgrade to the full paid version. This showed how we were getting further and further away from the cache when I was hoping we were getting closer.

We took the path right the way round and went back on ourselves until we were climbing the stairs along a muddy path at the side of the Abbey ruins. Now we were getting close!

It said that the cache would be hidden under a log, and beneath stones. I looked around to find that this described most of the terrain we were standing in. But not one to be beaten, I scoured every log and stone, ducked under bridges and walked through muddy banks, until I pulled aside a stone resting against a log, pushed aside a few wet leaves and there it was! A very small plastic sealed box, containing a few pin badges, a tiny toy crocodile, a logbook and a pencil to make your mark with. It is important to note that if you find a cache and take its contents you are meant to replace it with something of similar value. I, however, decided just to leave a note and placed all the contents exactly

how I found them. I then recorded this on my profile at www.geocac hing.com

Take a look at page 21 for a tip top offer...

My iPhone made a beep when we were within meters of the find, and we got a hint from the application I had downloaded. This application links into the website I previously stated, so all the information is obtainable from there too.

You have no idea how exciting it is to find your first cache. I am looking into getting a dedicated GPS unit now, and go out to find more. It is a great way to discover more about your local area, as well as get you exercising. Whilst I do not have kids, I can see how it would be an adventure for them – an activity for the whole family. There are different types of cache; some that are just one offs like I found, to caches where each cache contains a clue to where the next one is hidden. Each and every one has a story behind them.

2011 - Year of the tablet

Matt Jones

When Apple launched the iPad in 2010 there was the usual widespread acclaim and massive sales but a feeling that it was missing a few crucial features. Where was the camera? It should have been perfect for video chatting with your friends. With all that storage available why aren’t you able to output HD content to your home TV? These missing features made many, including myself, hold off from buying one. Enter the competition. The other major players saw what the iPad missed out, squeezed them in and even more on top. Motorola announced their debut into the market with the Xoom, sporting a 10 inch screen and the ability to watch high definition

movies while on the move. HTC showed their Flyer, a smaller, more portable style of tablet, but containing a blazing fast processor to make web browsing and YouTube watching as smooth as possible. LG launched their G-Slate with a world first for a tablet device; dual cameras so you can record videos in 3D that can be played back straight on the device. It’s worth noting that these three will all run the newest versions of the Google owned Android operating system which has been a huge success in the mobile phone world and a direct competitor of the iPhone. Are these enough to topple the mighty iPad though? Possibly not because Apple have just taken the wrapping off their brand new version, the iPad 2. Due to be released in the UK at the end of March, nearly every aspect has been improved over the predecessor. A faster processor, two cameras (and the rear able to record in HD), yet somehow still thinner and lighter than the original model. Apple have certainly pulled no punches to ensure that the competition don’t steal any sales away. Judging by the hysteria that’s followed the announcements, I have a funny feeling they may have just pulled it off. ◉

The Reef - Tropical & Marine Fish

i there, first let me introduce myself. My name is Steve Harvey and I own and run The Reef, Tropical and Marine Fish specialist on Market Street, Dalton in Furness. I have been keeping and breeding tropical and marine fish for over 20 years. I have written articles for the PFK National Fish keeping Magazine and local clubs over the years and I will be writing an article in The Pinfold every issue and also answering any question you might have or try to solve any problems you might be having with your aquarium. We will start with the first stage that is so important but a lot of people do not understand and is the heart to any aquarium, the nitrogen cycle. This is what all filter systems work on and this is what keeps your fish, inverts and corals healthy and alive. All live stock kept in an aquarium give of ammonia as a waste product, which is deadly so we introduce the nitrogen cycle. Ammonia: is produced by fish, corals, inverts and waste food left on the bottom etc, so we have to deal with this very quickly. The first stage of the cycle is for bacteria to break down this ammonia to nitrite.

18

Nitrite: is a still a harmful

by product so the next stage of the cycle is for the bacteria to break down the nitrite to nitrate. Nitrate: is the last stage of the cycle which is less harmful to fish in small amounts. The way we control this is with water changes. 10% of the volume of your aquarium is taken out each week and replaced with clean treated water. The above nitrogen cycle is important in cold water, tropical freshwater and marine aquariums whether you are keeping 1 fish or 30 fish. You must have the cycle at least started in the filter system before adding any fish to your aquarium and then only stock you aquarium slowly with fish so that your filter system has time to catch up with the extra amount of waste being produced. There are many different ways in which you can help start the nitrogen cycle from using a filter start aid, acquiring some already matured filter media or feeding the filter with a waste product i.e rotting food to let the bacteria start. I cannot over state how important it is to establish the filter before adding fish. It saves the lives of fish and also saves the money in your pocket. May i just add a quick note when cleaning out your filter or filter media, siphon some aquarium water from your tank and use this water to clean all filter media, never use tap water as the chlorine in tap water kills any bacteria you have spent days and weeks getting into your filter in the first place. â—‰

Something fishy going on...

I was asked by the Editor if I would like a free pedicure during our recent meet up. Not being one to turn such a glamorous afternoon down, I of course said yes... I arrived at ‘The Hair Lounge’ in Barrow excited at the prospect of having a file and polish, when I was asked to remove my shoes and wash my feet.. It seems I was about to experience Furness’ new Garra Rufa Fish Pedicure – Tip Top Toes. OK so let me just tell you; I don’t like feet, I don’t like fish either so the combination of the two was a little nerve-wracking if I’m honest! The saving grace for me at this point is that although I can see the tank of about 100 tiny fish waiting for me, the staff at the salon are attentive and did try to ease my mind by talking to me while I prepared my blue-white feet. So after about 5 minutes of me faffing and having a mini breakdown in front of the whole salon, I finally lowered my quivering toes into the warm tank. Instantly the fish latched themselves on to my feet and ankles. I was pleasantly surprised at how it felt. At first it tickled, but after a few minutes it subsided to a gentle bubbling feeling. The treatment takes around twenty minutes, during which

the girls got me a ‘proper coffee’ and a magazine to read. It was actually a really nice experience once I relaxed into it.

The result? Softer than soft feet, even where I had hard skin, and perfect cuticles! They felt like my baby’s feet!! I was so impressed that the next day after making Brad touch my feet all night, I booked for my Mum, Sister and Brad to go that weekend as my Valentines treat. Its been 2 weeks now and I’m ready for my next appointment, and for just £10 per treatment its a total bargain! ◉

Adele is a 33 year old mum of two. She started making cast-glass jewellery several years ago, setting up her kiln in the crystal manufacturers where she works. Obviously this is your passion but did you always want to do what you’re doing now? Ever since I visited the glassworks at Caithness when I was 6 years old. I knew then that I wanted to work with glass and never looked back. If thats not inspiring I don’t know what is! So do you make comissioned pieces? If so who has been your favourite client?

Glass Jewellery by Adele

Each client is as special as the rest. I am always happy to work with a client on personal commissions, to ensure they treasure their piece. The saying goes: “choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life”, is that how it feels for you? Absolutely spot on. I love my job! Every single aspect of it. If I won the lottery tomorrow, I would STILL make glass jewellery It doesn’t get better than that. How do you juggle two children and your career? Superpowers? Haha! If only! No, I get a lot of support from family and friends who are always happy to help. I couldn’t do it without them. I guess we should close with; have you got any plans for the future?

y name is Andy Jones-Barnes, and I own JayBee’s Cakes on Market Street in Dalton. This is a very rich and moist muffin. It is a wonderful recipe for using up any ripe bananas you have. This recipe will make 12-16 muffins.

You will need: Muffin or deep cupcake trays. Muffin cases A whisk 2 large mixing bowls Measuring cups/ tea spoons/ scales Wire cooling rack

Ingredients: 400g Granulated Sugar 245g Plain Flour 75g Cocoa Powder 1 ½ teaspoons Baking Powder 1 ½ teaspoons Baking Soda 2 Large Eggs 1 cup (2 medium bananas) Mashed Ripe Bananas 250ml Warm Water 120 ml Milk 120 ml Sunflower oil 1 ½ teaspoons Vanilla extract

M

First start off by pre-heating the oven to 350F/180C, (170C in a fan assisted oven). In the first bowl whisk the sugar, flour, cocoa powder, baking powder and baking soda together. In the second bowl whisk together the eggs, mashed bananas, milk, oil and vanilla extract. Add all of the “wet” ingredients to the “dry” ingredients, and whisk gently until they are combined together.

Remove from the oven and cool on a wire rack.

Pour into your muffin cases.

These will keep for 4-5 days, if you can resist them for that long that is! ◉

Place in the centre of your oven for 20-30 minutes. When cooked, a toothpick inserted in the centre of the muffin will come out clean.
