Returning to the UK after living 20 years in America, I had a craving for some sweet roasted Almonds with sugar and cinnamon which I used to buy in our local grocery store. Not being able to buy them here, I had a go at making them. After a few burnt pans and smokey kitchens, I finally got it right! It just so happened that I was picking my son up in Ambleside that evening and driving through Coniston a thought came to me out of the blue, I could sell these and call them "Coniston Old Man's Nuts!" I thought this very humorous, and had a go....and here we are a year later with "Herdi Tupps Spicy Nuts" which are a sweet chipotle chilli and lime and Herdi Poos which are chocolate covered peanuts. I do gift bags of 125g and small pub size packets of 40g. I am supplying local pubs, delis and gift shops so keep an eye out for us. If you would like to stock or try our nuts pop me an email or give me a call.

Furness Tradition Folk Festival On July the 10th -11th Thousands of people converged on Ulverston to enjoy a triple delight of folk music and dance, classic cars, bikes and vintage style as Ulverston Tradition Folk Festival combined with Retro Rendezvous and the L’Ancienne bike tours around the area. The Folk Festival saw music and dancing across the town while the Retro Rendezvous featured vintage stalls, pop-up tea shops, music and the chance to polish up your knowledge of classic cars and bikes, snap up vintage clothes or get your hair done in increasingly popular 50s and 60s styles. On Sunday cycling enthusiasts took to the roads around the area from Ford Park riding their favourite bikes from a bygone era – no carbon fibre frames just good old-fashioned pedal-pushers!

Lantern Festival to climax with a fantastic LED light performance
Ulverston Lantern Festival will this year climax on a spectacular high note with an Olympic-style closing ceremony involving dozens of local people who will learn circus skills and the dance moves required to create ‘light graffiti’, and entertain thousands of people flocking to the town for the event on Saturday September 12th. The breath-taking finale will be designed and created right here in Ulverston and performed by a troupe of dancers which is now being recruited by artists Matrix Circus. Matrix Circus has secured grant funding from Arts Council England to put on the amazing mass-participation show with painted dancers, fire fans and leading-edge LED hoops created by an Ulverston-based artist. The Lantern Festival committee has also contributed to help with development of the concept. "I'm so chuffed they've given us their backing, now we just need the volunteers to perform and make it happen," says Jennifer Street of Matrix Circus. Jennifer has been dreaming of putting on an even bigger show since organising last year's festival finale.
16
"The aim is to create a show by the community for the community so I'm after 50 people who want to come together to learn circus skills and create a magical night for Ulverston. The show will be inspired by this year's Lantern Festival theme of 'Out of the Toy Box', and will be staged at other locations within the community as part of the ‘Community Spark’ project. It will involve people learning to use flaming fans, hula hoops and poi (a fire dance performing art from New Zealand) to create a light show on a stage erected for the night at Ford Park. Alternative drumming act The Deatbeats will join in and the traditional firework display will also light up the night for crowds.” Jennifer adds: “Our aim is to give people within the South Lakeland community a platform and confidence to engage in the circus arts. We will provide a supportive safe environment for people to express themselves in a playful relaxed group, to build self-confidence and a sense of empowerment through performance. Ulverston-based artist Ellie Chaney will help people design and make their own costumes and make-up artist Kerry Turner will assist in creating our characters. It's going to look amazing,” enthuses Jennifer. Artist Ben Kermode will make the unique LED hoops and poi for the show which can be programmed to create any text or geometric design. Gavin Knott of the Ulverston Lantern Festival committee said: "We decided to back the concept so we can have an all-singing, all-dancing festival finale we'll all remember. "It also feels right to do something that supports artists in Ulverston, gives people new skills and also encourages a new LED enterprise, since LEDs are at the heart of so many of the town’s technology-leading companies." Rehearsals will begin shortly and anyone wishing to take part in the finale should call Jennifer on 07907 100042 or email matrixcircus@live.com

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOUR ACCOUNTANT IS QUALIFIED?
Unfortunately, you do not have to have any qualifications to call yourself an accountant. How do you know if your accountant is NOT qualified? Look at their website, e-mails and letterheads. Are there any letters behind their name? If not, you can be sure that they are NOT qualified. You would not study for years and not put your qualification behind your name. The letters to look out for are: FCA or ACA – Chartered Accountant FCCA or ACCA – Chartered Certified Accountant MAAT of AAT – Accounting Technician CIMA – Chartered Management Accountant These are the main institutes but there are others. Also, if someone has qualified in the past, and no longer pays their subscriptions, they are not allowed to put any letters behind their name. If you are still unsure, ask your accountant if they belong to one of the institutes and which one they belong to. You can then go onto the ACA, ACCA websites and “look for an accountant”, type in their name and if it comes up with no matches, they are not qualified. The problem with using an unqualified accountant is that more than often they are not up to speed with the latest tax law, they do not have to keep update with CPE (continual professional education), and you have no redress through the institutes if they have given you bad advice. Some unqualified accountants are charging extortionate fees which fools their clients into thinking that at that rate, they must be qualified. Don’t be fooled. Phone around and find out what the qualified accountants are charging. I have come across some cases where my fees are between 25% and 50% cheaper!
• As professional accountants we offer tax and accounting services that you would expect which run alongside many others. • Please take time to review our services. • If you require more information or would like to arrange a free consultation please contact us. Why The unusual name? well this is a love story, The owner tells of her father on his first date with her mum bought her a bunch of Violets, this became her favourite flower, the Violet became a motif running throughout their long lives together, for love, honesty, trust and friendship. Ok, but why pea pod? As the owner points out. "I have two brothers and five sisters, our father used to sit at the dining table, look fondly around and declare " you're like peas in a pod!. Violet and the pea pod sits quietly in Queens Court ginnel in the historic market town of Ulverston. The Violet and the Pea pod is a Vintage Tearoom found in Queens Court, in a ginnel off Market place in Ulverston. A fabulous place to have a cup of tea and a freshly baked cake. Whilst enjoying a feast of quite another kind, a feast for the eyes. It is like entering Aladdin’s cave of all that is vintage. They offer everything from
clothes, jewellery, tins, china and so much more. If you are looking for a vintage wedding dress, a string of pearls or missing a button this tea room is the place to visit. Your Pension Pot Options Following changes introduced in April 2015 you have more choice and flexibility than ever before over how and when you can take money from your pension pot. Take your time to understand your options, and get help and advice as what you decide now will affect your retirement income for the rest of your life.
Your options at a glance
Under the new flexible rules you can mix and match any of the options below, using different parts of one pension pot or using separate or combined pots. Leave your pension pot untouched You may be able to delay taking your pension until a later date. Your pot then continues to grow tax-free, potentially providing more income once you access it. Use your pot to buy a guaranteed income for life – an annuity You can choose to take up to a quarter (25%) of your pot as a one-off tax-free lump sum then convert the rest into a taxable income for life called an annuity. There are different lifetime annuity options and features to choose from that affect how much income you would get.You can also choose to provide an income for life for a dependant or other beneficiary after you die.
Use your pot to provide a flexible retirement income – flexi-access drawdown With this option you take up to 25% (a quarter) of your pension pot or of the amount you allocate for drawdown as a tax-free lump sum,
26
then re-invest the rest into funds designed to provide you with a regular taxable income. You set the income you want, though this may be adjusted periodically depending on the performance of your investments. Unlike with a lifetime annuity your income isn’t guaranteed for life – so you need to manage your investments carefully. Take small cash sums from your pot You can use your existing pension pot a bit like a savings account, to take cash as and when you need it and leave the rest untouched where it can continue to grow tax-free. For each cash withdrawal the first 25% (quarter) is tax-free and the rest counts as taxable income. There may be charges each time you make a cash withdrawal and/or limits on how many withdrawals you can make each year. Take your whole pot as cash Did you know? Cashing in your pension pot will not give you a secure retirement income. Get guidance from Pension Wise followed by financial advice before you commit. You could close your pension pot and take the whole amount as cash in one go if you wish. The first 25% (quarter) will be tax-free and the rest will be taxed at your highest tax rate – by adding it to the rest of your income. There are many risks associated with cashing in your whole pot. For example, it’s highly likely that you’ll be landed with a large tax bill, it won’t pay you or any dependant a regular income and, without very careful planning, you could run out of money and have nothing to live on in retirement. Be sure to get financial advice before cashing in your whole pot.
Mixing your options You don’t have to choose one option when deciding how to access your pension – you can mix and match as you like, and take cash and income at different times to suit your needs. You can also keep saving into a pension if you wish, and get tax relief up to age 75. Which option or combination is right for you will depend on: • When you stop or reduce your work • Your income objectives and attitude to risk • Your age and health • The size of your pension pot and other savings • Any pension or other savings of your spouse or partner, if relevant • Whether you have financial dependants • Whether your circumstances are likely to change in the future Get help or advice If you’re 55 or over and thinking of taking all or part of your pension, you can use Pension Wise, a free government backed service, to help you understand all of the choices you have. It’s an impartial service available online, on the phone, and or face-to-face. Once you understand your choices, a financial adviser will be able to recommend which option (or combination) is best for you and help find you the most competitive products.

31ST JULY 2ND AUGUST CELEBRATION OF PASTEL MARKS BARDSEA ART EXHIBITION This year’s Bardsea Schoolroom Art Group and Ulverston Society of Artists Summer Exhibition runs from Friday 31st July to Sunday 2nd August with works for sale including ‘A Park in Pastel’ signed by the late Christopher Assheton-Stones, a rare opportunity to obtain a artwork by one of the UK’s most renowned pastellists. Eighty-eight year old Ron Stacey started the Bardsea Schoolroom Art Group in 1972 with just twelve members supported by internationally acclaimed tutors willing to share their techniques and secrets. He says:“It is rare to find so many artists in one place using soft pastels so proficiently and so one could argue that the tutor who made the most impact on the Bardsea Art Group was the late Christopher Assheton-Stones. Renowned as one of the UK’s most important pastellist, he used very fine sand paper as a base for soft pastel as he believed it held the medium better than standard pastel papers. He also persuaded Unison to create a new series of 36 greys, named the Assheton-Stones set, to promote a more dramatic effect in his artwork. “Today, there are still members of the Bardsea Schoolroom Art Group who remember Assheton-Stones and as well as using watercolour, oil and acrylic, many are pastellists, who follow his style and uphold his legacy as a very influential, national artist.” A pastel painting by Ron Stacey ‘View of the Langdales’ is also being raffled to raise funds for the Bardsea Schoolroom Art Group. Opening times are 10am – 4pm and the catalogue price is £1.50, which includes home-made refreshments. END of TENANCY, OVEN and CARPET CLEANS.(ESTATE AGENT) The previous tenants left the place in such a state! Prior to your cleaning, I was convinced that I would have to replace both the carpets and the cooker. However after you cleaned them, I was amazed that I no longer have to! Thank you so much Rob. I am very happy with the result!
Nancy, Harrison Coward Estate Agents, Ulverston.
BEDSIT DEEP CLEANS (COMMERCIAL HOME) The entire property was in a poor condition and needed a thorough deep clean throughout. Rob spent a full week in that property and the results were astounding. Rob impressed us with his efficient and professional manner, and most certainly generated the results we were looking for. We will certainly be recommending his services to anyone requiring a new look for their tired properties. Jean Mease, Property Management.
