Julie’s Philosophy on Business Growth
How does it work?
Whether you want to build your business, create a more dynamic team, or systemise your business so that you can be confident it can run effectively without you necessarily needing to be there, coaching will help you achieve your goals. Having a coach means you: • Have someone experienced to brainstorm with as a fellow business owner; somebody who understands the psychological challenges you face as a business owner. • Work with someone who isn’t blinded by the industry norms and can give a true outside perspective. • Remain accountable to a pro-active mentor who will make sure you work ‘on’ the business not just ‘ in’ it. • Have access to practical knowledge that your coach has, in relation to the development of strategies to improve all areas of your business. • Have the benefit of using the ActionCOACH systems that have been developed over 22 years through dealing with businesses all around the world. In addition your coach also has access to the knowledge and experience of every other coach in the 1,000 offices worldwide to call upon. • Have someone who will keep you motivated to achieve whatever it is you want to achieve with your business.
What do you get from it?
By utilising ActionCOACH’s proprietary sales, marketing and business management systems, I will not only show you how to increase your business revenues and profits, often quite dramatically, but also how to develop your business so that you, as the owner can ultimately work less and achieve more. Your coach will help you: • Increase your turnover, margin and profits • Turn marketing into an investment rather than an expense • Recruit, motivate and retain a winning team of employees • Put systems in place that provide consistent results • Find more time for family, friends and other interests • Ultimately have a business that can run without you

Enduring Powers of Attorney?
An Enduring Power of Attorney is a legal document that appoints a person or persons to manage your property, money and financial affairs. The person(s) appointed are called Attorney(s) and the Hannah Elizabeth Bell LLB Director Photo: Lorraine Oates Photography person making the Enduring Power of Attorney is known as the Donor. Attorney(s) can help the Donor to make decisions and/or make decisions on the Donor’s behalf about their property, money or financial affairs.
The Enduring Power of Attorney was replaced by the Lasting Power of Attorney in October 2007. An Enduring Power of Attorney that was made, signed and witnessed, before October 2007 is still valid and can continue being used. However it is no longer possible to make new Enduring Powers of Attorney. If you have an Enduring Power of Attorney your Attorney(s) can continue to act for you in accordance with the terms of your Enduring Power of Attorney. Alternatively you can cancel your Enduring Power of Attorney and make a new Lasting Power of Attorney.
Unregistered Enduring Powers of Attorney can be cancelled by the Donor completing a Deed of Revocation and placing it with the Enduring Power of Attorney document. Cancelling a registered Enduring Power of Attorney is more complex as the Donor has to apply to the Court of Protection and pay a fee (currently £400.00). The Donor may also need to provide evidence to the Court of Protection that they still have mental capacity if they seek to cancel a registered Enduring Power of Attorney. The Donor should let their Attorney(s) and the financial institutions with which they have dealings know if they intend to cancel their Enduring Power of Attorney. Lakes Legal Limited specialise in the provision of Lasting Powers of Attorney and are happy to answer any queries you may have. If you have any questions about your personal legal affairs please feel free to contact Hannah Bell using the below telephone number or by e-mail: Hannah@lakeslegallimited.co.uk.
Lakes Legal Limited offers a comprehensive Lasting Power of Attorney service so you know exactly how much it is going to cost you from the very beginning.

Caring for hedgehogs this spring by Kay Hebbourn
This week I released 4 rescue hedgehogs in the garden. I’d like to think that they will choose to make their home here and that they will stick around. So, I need to provide a good habitat and make sure that I do what I can to keep them safe. If I’m lucky, they will mate.
Hedgehogs like lots of other wildlife are in rapid decline. There are a number of factors that have led to this decline including walled in gardens, the widespread use of slug pellets, the decline of food sources and being culled in parts of Scotland.
Hedgehogs are called ‘The Gardeners’ Friend’ because they eat slugs and other pests. If you have them around your garden, there are a list of things that you can do to keep them safe and encourage them to hang about.
How To Attract Hedgehogs In Your Garden
Give Them Access They can roam about a mile a night in search of food, so they need access in and out of your garden. We have removed our hard fences in favour of shrubs and hedges. The ‘edges’ as they say in permaculture is where everything happens. Where you have an edge, you have life. If the hedges are dense enough with enough room to move around underneath, the hedgehogs will love them.
Don’t Use Slug Pellets Encourage your neighbours not to use slug pellets. I have invested in a large tub of sheep’s wool pellets and I’m handing them out to neighbours and asking them to swap from the ordinary ones. These organic wool pellets are made of sheep’s fleece and have very fine scales with small barbs on the tip called cuticle cells. Wool fibres are very hygroscopic when combined with sand and grit. Potassium salts from the sweat glands of the sheep also absorb the slime from the slug’s foot. This causes irritation to the slug and it will soon head off looking
16
for easier feeding methods. This means healthy slugs for the hedgehogs. Feed Them And Give Them Water You can leave food and water about in little shallow dishes. The lids from coffee jars are perfect.
Here are some of the things that hedgehogs like to eat:
Cat food- I put about a third of a tin per night for the four that I released and it all goes. Hedgehog food (ground up peanuts and sunflower hearts
and dried meal worms) Nuts and seeds, Boiled or mashed potatoes, Cat biscuits or Mealworms Never give them bread or milk.
Be A Bit Wild Leave wild areas in the garden for them to gather bits and pieces to make a home or hide under. If your garden is to neat and tidy, they won’t have anywhere to hide. This is known as zone 5 in Permaculture. Make A Hedgehog Home You can buy ready made hedgehog homes, they are available from lots of places. You can also make your own using what you’ve got lying around. An upturned plastic dog bed is perfect. put some straw underneath it. Fleeces make great insulation too. Avoid Drowning Opportunities Make sure that any ponds or water traps have sloping sides so that if they do fall in they can climb out.
Don’t Kill Them By Accident Hedgehogs love compost bins, bonfire piles and long grass. So be careful with forks, matches and strimmers. Check before taking action. Dogs can also be a threat, so try to keep dogs away from hedgehog habitats. Good luck!

Fancy a wood burner?
A wood burner, can be a great focal point in your home, but not only do they look welcoming, they can also reduce your ever increasing heating bills. In fact, a recent survey amongst Which? Magazine readers found that users saved money on fuels bills after installing a wood burner or multi fuel stove. Traditionally used to heat one room, wood burning stoves can now incorporate or be connected to a boiler, which will then provide heat and hot water to the entire house. Stoves are also more efficient than gas or open fires, with an energy efficiency rating of between 60% and 80% and with an increasing demand on traditional fuels such as gas and electricity, and the inevitable continuing price rises, you are sure to see savings rise in the future. Typically when we think of stoves we think of burning wood, but you can burn other fuels such
18
as coal in a multi-fuel stove and our engineer will be able to advise you on which type of stove will be suit your needs. According to the Stove Industry Alliance (SIA), a wood burning stove is 77% cheaper per kilowatt hour (kWh) to run than an electric fire, 29% cheaper than a gas fire, and around 43% cheaper than oil and 50% cheaper than an LPG fire. Linking a range of heating systems, such as gas, oil, LPG or electric with the option of adding solar panels, a gas boiler and a wood burning stove then using a thermal store to regulate the different energy sources, will help you save money all year round. And of course your local tried and trusted experts at Gas Water Heating can carry out all of these installations including your solar panels.

Jess Gillam
performing at the Ulverston International Music Festival
Jess Gillam, a 17 year old saxophonist from Ulverston, has been invited to perform at the Ulverston International Music Festival this year as a solo recitalist.
In 2014, Jess was a Category finalist on BBC Young Musician of the Year and received the BBC Walter Todd's Bursary for showing exceptional promise in the competition. She enjoys performing a mixed classical and jazz repertoire and this is reflected in her programme for the UIMF where she will perform classical music with a pianist and some jazz with jazz guitarist Brian Parkinson.
Anthony Hewitt, director of the Festival and international pianist, says "Jess Gillam needs no introduction. We are very proud to present her for the first time at the Festival in a full evening recital. Jess is destined for a great future". Last year, Nicola Benedetti, one of the most sought after violinists of her generation, performed at the Festival, joining the list of classical music greats including Stephen Iserliss , Tasmin Little, Martin Roscoe and Emma Johnson who have all performed at the Festival. Jess studies saxophone at the Junior Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester with Ruth Bourn. Jess was accepted into the JRNCM in 2011 with the Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music Scholarship in 2011. Jess has since won awards at the RNCM for demonstrating outstanding talent and has
24
performed in concerts for them across the North-West. She has won many awards both locally and nationally including an award as the ‘Best Young Musician in the North-West’ from Awards for Young Musicians who have supported Jess greatly in her musical development. She was awarded an ABRSM Diploma aged 15.
Jess has played with Snake Davis several times and was described by him as “one of the best young sax players in the UK.” She runs her own annual concert series in Ulverston where previous acts have included Snake Davis and the Suspicions, Courtney Pine,The Tommy Smith Youth Jazz Orchestra, The Apollo Saxophone Quartet and Niko and the Terry Turner Trio and Rob Buckland and upcoming performances include John Harle, described as "a soloist of barbarous splendour" by The Sunday Times and one of the worlds greatest saxophonists, in November this year. Jess recently joined Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra onstage for a guest appearance at the Sands Centre in Carlisle and has performed the Glazunov Saxophone Concerto with both the Worthing Symphony Orchestra and the Ealing Symphony Orchestra, under acclaimed conductor John Gibbons. Jess has also been invited to perform the Malcolm Arnold Saxophone Concerto at the Malcolm Arnold Festival later this year. She is a member of the National Youth Wind Ensemble of Great Britain. Jess became the youngest ever endorsee for Yanagisawa Saxophones, one of the world’s finest saxophone manufacturers in 2012, aged 13. She also recently became a Vandoren UK Artist.
Jess will be performing on Wednesday 17th June at the Coronation Hall. 7.30, tickets are available through the box office 01229 587140.
