Welcome to our spine chilling October issue.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness month so we have brought you some local support and advice on what to look out for and who to contact should you be concerned.
The weather is being kind to us at the moment and we have had a week or so of lovely sunshine, but all the autumnal signs are there, the leaves are changing and starting to turn to those gorgeous glowing oranges. The nights are drawing in and the moon has been absolutely spectacular, getting us in the mood for Halloween. We have some fantastic Halloween activities for the family this month.
Thank you to Cathy Hodder of Boudoir Pink in Ulverston for our cover image and the support you give all our local ladies.
As always I would like to thank Lorraine Oates Photography for the editor’s photograph.

25 years as Market Leader in Beauty Industry
Michelle Robinson has always been ahead of the competition with advanced beauty treatments such as the Non-surgical micro-current facial lifting, IPL hair removal & skin rejuvenation treatment, advanced electrolysis treatments such as Red vein, Skin tag & Milia removal . Now as the clinic looks to the future they are launching the New Elemis Biotec technology facials which includes: Triple-tec anti-wrinkle Firm-a-lift Anti-pigment brightener Skin Resurfacer Radiance renew Blemish control Sensitive skin soother Super-charge facial for men The clinic is the only salon in south Cumbria to take delivery of this new facial technology and to launch it and celebrate 25 years in business they are having a beauty night to demonstrate and answer all questions on the biotec treatments as well as their full range of beauty treatments.
A bit of our History
25 years ago when Michelle moved to Barrow-in-Furness as a qualified beauty therapist, there were no beauty salons in the area, a local retailer said ‘you will never make a go of Beauty in this town’ that was ‘the red flag to the bull’ that made her start her own Beauty Clinic business. It all started in 1990 on Rawlinson St, then a move above ‘Goldies’ as it was on Buccleuch St, then Crellin St, followed by Abbey Road. 6 years ago the final move was to 6 Lakes Parade opposite Furness General Hospital. Many therapists have spent years perfecting their skills under Michelle’s experience to go on to open their own salons, become college tutors and sail the seas on cruise ships. The present team of experienced therapists include Paula Hotchkiss, who has been with the clinic since 2001, Rosie Emms who started in 2011 and now Stephanie Baines who joined the clinic this month, having gained experience at Lakeside Hotel and The ‘Elemis salon in Grange' .

October is a special month for Boudoir Pink, firstly it is BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH & secondly it's 9 years since we opened our doors in beautiful Ulverston to all our lovely ladies.
According to the most recent figures over 50,000 women (and 350 men) are diagnosed with some form of Breast cancer, ever single year in the UK(in Ireland this is in the region of 2,800). It means that 1 in every 8 women will be diagnosed in there lifetimes. This form of cancer is no respector of age but the highest incidence is in white females 50-69 (which accounts for nearly 50% of cases). The need for regular screening of this age group is now well established but as so well documented by Kris Hallenga (CoppaFeel) was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer at the age of 23. It is so important that younger women are Breast Aware & it isn't just an older womens disease!!
‘How to be Breast Aware'
6
Being 'breast aware'' means getting to know your breast Becoming familiar with your breasts and how they normally look & feel, this ensures early detection l& treatment Make 'breast awareness' part of your monthly routine in the bath/shower or when dressing Check for: Size:if one breast becomes larger, changes shape or position
Nipples: drawing-in, discharge or bleeding Rashes: on or around the nipple Skin changes: dimpling or puckering, changes to surface of the breast Swelling: lumps or thickening to breast area, under the armpit or around the collarbone (the lymph nodes) Pain in any part of breast or armpit If you notice anything unusual or worried, go the GP. Remember that most breast changes are not cancer and always attend regular breast screenings when invited.
At Boudoir Pink we treat all our ladies with respect and sensitivity. We are always here for help and guidance and if any lady needs us to go to her if she is feeling low, we will do. We are here to make ladies happy. Recently we had some lovely ladies from 'Lookin Good Feelin Great', Adele Dean & Gill Tyson. I had the pleasure of assisting Adele Dean and she went out smiling. A wonderful strong lady. We are always looking for new designs which are prettier and make you feel good. Most importantly always treat your breast with respect and look after them.
If you have any concerns or worries do not hesitate to call Cathy or Zoe on 01229 588 880

Community Foster Care You know you could foster ..
.. but maybe you think you wouldn’t be suitable .. because you’re single, gay or over a certain age.
Actually, none of these would rule you out. Community Foster Care is a local charity .. and we’re looking for all kinds of people, from all walks of life .. in Barrow and the surrounding areas to join our existing carers.
We provide a generous financial allowance to support you in the role. We are a small non-profit making agency and the relationships between carers and our staff team are very important to us. Our carers say that
being with CFC feels like being part of an extended family. All our carers have their own social worker who will visit very regularly, as well as 24 hour support from a qualified social worker – fostering is very much a team effort.
There is a real need for foster carers in this area and we are keen to recruit new families to meet this demand. We regularly hold information events where you can come along and talk to a member of staff and find out a little bit more about what fostering is all about. Please check our website for details or call Emma, Maria, Loren or Loren Sheila on 01524 489388 or Marion and Meg on 01900 838046 or e mail us at emmaw@communityfostercare.co.uk
Why not call and see us at The Forum Theatre, Duke Street, Barrow on 24th October 2015 and 7th November 2015? We will be there from 10.30am to answer any questions and meet anyone interested in fostering. Hope to see you soon! Emma Weaver Registered Manager

Inspired by a love of outdoor sports, travel and vibrant colours, the owners of London based business Kusan have developed a fantastic range of woollen accessories. Their cosy hats and gloves are worn throughout Europe and sold in cool skate shops and chic boutiques alike. Design is completed at the London HQ but the full range is produced lovingly and ethically in Nepal where striking knitted clothing is a tradition. All Kusan hats and gloves are fleece lined and made from 100% New Zealand wool so they are sure to keep you as warm as toast. It is Kusan’s belief that they employ some of the best hand knitters in the world, many of them having been with the company from the start. They all work in a safe healthy environment and are paid a good wage and work fair hours. Outside the workplace, each year, Kusan contributes to community projects within the Kathmandu Valley. Following the terrible earthquakes earlier this year Kusan have worked closely with their colleagues in Nepal to provide support, and supplies. They have worked hard to raise money back home too and along with fashion brand Komodo, they co founded the ‘Brand Aid for Nepal’ initiative which aims to help the Nepalese people to rebuild their lives. In addition, this season a contribution will be made to the initiative direct from the sale of all Kusan products. Kusan report that the determination of the Nepalese people to keep working and continue with life in the worst possible circumstances is incredible. It is vital that brands like Kusan continue to manufacture from Nepal, as trade will help to rebuild their country.

The Glow Goes On
Ulverston's Candlelit Walk is going for a walk itself this year over to Ford Park to light the night this Halloween.on Sat, Oct 31st. Jennie Dennett explains...
If you've wandered up The Gill this Autumn you'll know that odd things are a-foot. You and all the town's dogs will have noted the arrival of steel fences and people, lots of people, wearing hard hats and shaking their heads at clipboards. This is the work on Ulverston's new flood prevention scheme and it won't be finished for some time. So with all this stuff in the way we've been wondering how to get our glow on for 2015.Where could we put 500 candles, a flaming tree, a ukulele band and a fire dancer to mark fright night in the way that has now become a tradition? We asked the nice crew at Ford Park and they said 'yes, great, bring it on'. We cheered.
16
Several pub meetings later and there is a grand plan for bringing the magic of the candlelit walk to the paths of the park once again using wax kindly donated by Wax Lyrical.
So when the sun sinks below the Hoad this Halloween, candles will light the way, leading revellers into the trees beyond the playground, past the flickering shadows of burning wax torches, past shadowcreens and a burning rope tree from the masters of fire, Thunderhead Arts aka Bob & Alex. There will be strange noises and light projections in the trees courtesy of The Octopus Collective. Miss Jennifer's coming along with toys of fire.
Martin Gilbert tells a story on the terrace.
And there will be food! Ford Park are opening the cafe so there will be tasty eats and hot drinks to buy to enjoy in the firelight because you might want to linger a while as the South Lakes Ukulele Orchestra pour their stringed sunshine on the occasion and
The Pumpkin Patch will also be taking root along the walls of the cafe, so please bring your best carved veg for everyone to admire.
Finally we're also going down the rabbithole for 2015 and adding some giant mushrooms to the mix. If you want to join in making those, come along to the Old Friends Beer Garden on Sat October 10 for a maker day. We'll also be snipping shapes for a shadowscreen - all ages welcome, just wield scissors and your imagination. So the glow will go on. We hope you can join us.
Ulverston's Candlelit Walk, 6pm - 8.30pm, 31 October. Free entrance, donations bucket so we can do it again next year.

Calling all video stars
- do your bit for charity!
Furness Building Society’s big Charity Stars talent competition which aims to give away more than £3,000 in prizes to good causes has launched and charity supporters and budding stars can now upload their audition videos to get in on the act! The competition is run by the Furness Building Society in association with The Bay radio and North West Evening Mail. Charity Stars challenges supporters to perform on behalf of their nominated good cause with the chance of winning a share of more than £3,000 in cash prizes. The ultimate winner will also get their taste of fame by becoming a ‘Star for a Day at the Bay’ and recording their own video and music session with the station. Entrants can video their performance and upload it via The Bay or Furness Building Society websites www.furnessbs.co.uk or www.thebay.co.uk where they will also find links to a video of flash mob launch events. The talent competition audition videos will be shared to gain publicity for their nominated charity and give viewers a taste of the entrant’s talent; all they need is a smart phone, camera or computer and the will to become a Charity Star. Nigel Quinton, Chief Executive of the Furness, explains: “The Furness is part of the community so supporting the charities which support those communities is a very strong commitment for us. Partnering with The Bay for ‘Charity Stars’ will enable us to reach more people to put the spotlight on the outstanding work of those charities.” Twelve finalists will be chosen to appear in a live show at the Lancaster Grand Theatre on January 30th 2016 to compete for a share of the cash prizes. A further 2 finalists will be chosen as ‘Wild Card’ entries by The Bay radio audience the joint the line-up in the live show. Every finalist is guaranteed to take away at least £100 for their good cause and the winner will receive £1000, with prizes of £750 and £500 for the charities represented by the runners-up. In the last final North West Air Ambulance, St Mary’s Hospice and Derian House Children’s Hospice were among the big winners. The competition is open to groups and individuals of all ages – the last final included acts aged from 7 to more than 70 years old. Singers, dancers, bands, choirs, comics, acrobats or novelty acts are all invited to take part and do something special for their chosen charity. Bill Johnston, Managing Director of The Bay added: “Charity Stars is a natural fit for us – combining music with raising cash for good causes and having fun at the same time. Last year our wonderful audience across The Bay really got behind the competition by uploading their own videos, visiting the websites and Facebook pages to see the latest entries, and of course helping to decide the ‘Wild Cards’ which got through to the final. This year it is going to be bigger and better than ever. “

Canal Anchor Festival
The Ulverston Canal Regeneration Group is organising a display of decorated anchors along the Canal towpath as a sculpture trail between 17th - 31st October, spanning half term. We hope many people will have the opportunity to walk along and enjoy this free event. Last year's event was a great success and will hope this one will be even better! Anchors were chosen because they reflect the history of ship building and the Iron and Steel industry that thrived along the Canal. They are also an easily recognised symbol of strength, security and safety and have become an icon used by many beliefs and manufacturers. They can be seen all over the world as logos and incorporated into and products architecture. This year, we are coupling it with a collection of Limericks and poems that reflect the history, characters and wildlife that have been associated with the Canal. These can be displayed on or alongside the anchors and will be reproduced in a booklet to be purchased locally.
We have distributed the anchors we pre-cut, however, if you would like to create your own we will be happy to display it along the towpath with the rest. You can produce anchors of any size, we cut ours from plywood. You can decorate in any way you wish; to celebrate something about yourself or your organisation, something about the history of the Town or perhaps something you would like it to become! Let your imagination go wild and enjoy creating a unique anchor. If you are unable to make an anchor but wish to contribute a poem or limerick please email them by 10th October so that they can be prepared for display. For further information please check the website or contact: Text: 07720 712928 Email: chairman@ulverstoncrg.co.uk Each anchor will be secured to a post at strategic points all along the Towpath. Bear in mind that the anchor will be outdoors and we would advise coating the finished design with clear varnish unless you choose a medium that will be unaffected by weather.
We are also still accepting entries for the 2016 Calendar Competition. The theme is "The Canal & Its Environs". Please check our website's Photo Gallery for full details. http://www.ulverstoncrg.co.uk/#!photo-gallery/c231v

John Harle is regarded as one of the finest saxophonists in the world. He is an Ivor Novello Award winning composer-performer and recent record releases include Art Music and The Tyburn Tree, both with Marc Almond of Soft Cell.
As a saxophonist, his playing has been the catalyst for an outpouring of new concertos for the saxophone by composers including Michael Nyman, Sir Richard Rodney Bennett, Sir John Tavener and Mark Anthony Turnage. John’s performance of Sir Harrison Birtwhistle’s concerto “Panic” at the Last Night of the BBC Proms in 1997 was cited by critics as the most controversial premiere of a new musical work since Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring in 1913.
John was artistic director to Sir Paul McCartney for 6 years and he has also been producer and musical director for Herbie Hancock, Sir John Dankworth, Dame Cleo Laine, Lesley Garrett and Stanley Myers to name but a few artists. His album Terror and Magnificence featuring Elvis Costello, reached No.3 in the Classical Charts.
He is the composer of many film and television scores including the theme to BBC One’s Silent Witness and the epic score to the television series The History of Britain. John is the recipient of two Royal Television society swards for Best Soundtrack and he has been awarded four BBC Proms commissions. Most recently, he composed the soundtrack to Hockney, a film about the life of David Hockney.
John Harle is one of those unique musicians who's sound has created an entirely new culture within the musical world. Uniquely vocal in style and with magical technique, he has redefined the classical voice of the instrument and brought it to the forefront of the public's consciousness.
Creating history at The Royal College of Music, London with a final graduation mark of 100%, he went on to win the Concert Artists Guild Amcon Award in New York which launched a major international soloist career encompassing concerto appearances across the globe with the world's most distinguished conductors. With over half a million record sales within the classical genre and with Grammy and Mercury Music nominations, he has changed the face of the classical saxophone with his charismatic performances on disc and in the concert hall. He is the most-recorded classical saxophonist in the world on major international record labels.

In Ulverston, John will perform with keyboardist Steve Lodder, described as ‘an improviser of originality and a musical thinker of erudition and depth” by The Guardian. Jess Gillam is a 17 year old saxophonist from Ulverston. Last year, she was the recipient of the BBC Walter Todds Bursary for showing exceptional promise when she was a woodwind finalist on BBC Young Musician of the Year. She has a busy performance schedule and has made a guest appearance with Jools Holland, has performed as a concerto soloist with the Worthing Symphony Orchestra in the same series as Nicola Benedetti and Emma Johnson, and most recently, she was the youngest solo performer at the World Saxophone Congress in Strasbourg where she performed world premieres by John Harle, Barbara Thompson and Rob Buckland. Later this year, she will be performing at London Jazz Festival with the national Youth Jazz Collective. She is the youngest ever endorsee for Yanagisawa Saxophones, one of the world’s finest saxophone manufacturers and Vandoren Reeds.
