Church Walk Pre-School Nursery
needs your help
Church Walk Pre-school Nursery is a well established and much loved nursery school in Ulverston. Initially established as a playgroup in a second hand portacabin, the playgroup registered as a charity in 1994 and became Church Walk Pre-school in 1997.The nursery is managed by a committee of volunteers who work closely with the 11 qualified staff to provide quality care and a safe environment for the children.
The group have spent recent years saving and planning towards a new purpose built nursery as the portacabin has reached the end of its life. Fundraising events have been supported by parents, staff and local businesses and recently grants have been approved from various charitable trusts, Ulverston Town Council and SLDC. This has helped the group get closer to their target and the new building is planned to go ahead during the school summer holidays this year. However, as there is a short fall, the remainder required has to be made up by taking out a loan. The smaller the loan the better so a crowdfunding campaign has been set up in the hope that £5000 can be raised before 9th July.
Helen McKeown, chairperson for the committee said “Please watch our video and help if you can. Any donations are very gratefully received and the children that attend nursery will be forever grateful”.
If you would like to help Church Walk Pre-school reach their target before the deadline of 9th July please visit the Indiegogo website or use this link -

UCRG Fun Gala on the 19th of July 2015
10
The Ulverston Canal Regeneration Group has been working over the last year to raise the profile of the Canal and its environs. We have succeeded in developing a sequence of festivals to enhance the events that occur in town. These are designed to increase awareness, encourage visitors to explore the area and enjoy the beautiful views and wildlife that exists along the towpath and at Canal Foot. On Sunday 19th July, we are holding a fund-raising Gala at Canal Foot from 11am till 3pm.There will be a range of craft and charity stalls, fun games for all the family, stocks, face painting, ice-creams, drinks and cakes, plants and bric a brac. Groups of school-age children have been invited to design and fly a kite at the event starting at 11.30am. Any school age person is welcome to participate with the chance of winning a prize. If you are only able to design a kite and not fly it, we will display it alongside the others with a prize for the most artistic kite! Maintaining a “Nautical theme to reflect the history
of the canal, “Hearts of Oak” will be sailed in front of the pier. There will also be the inflatable craft from Inshore Rescue round the basin. We have permission to use the car park at Glaxo sports club and ask that visitors please park and walk to the gala to keep Canal Foot as free of traffic as possible for the safety of all. There is no charge for attending the event but we will be encouraging people to make a donation and spend their money! We are currently working with the charity “Groundwork” after a successful bid of £100K for making improvements to the access paths, signage, seating and interactive installations. Designs and plans are being drawn up after a round of consultation events. We are hoping that everyone will have an enjoyable day out; sharing this beautiful area of Ulverston, finding out about our plans for future events and proposed developments, giving feedback and ideas. If you wish to reserve a stall pitch, take part in the kite competition, or simply find out more details about the group and becoming a member: Contact chairman@ulverstoncrg.co.uk You can also find us on Facebook: Ulverston Canal Regeneration Group & Twitter: Ulverston CRG.

Important travel changes
Well, with summer holidays just around the corner I hope you are all getting in the holiday mood with the good dose of sunshine we are currently being dealt (as I write). Long may it continue…
However, with the sunshine and funshine ahead, we must also take note of new and important announcements just to be sure we are on the ball when planning our trips.
I like to keep my customers up to date with all the latest travel requirements, so that their holidays run as smoothly and as care free as possible. So if you’re planning a trip abroad soon these might just come in handy.
Hiring a car abroad?
If you’re holiday involves hiring a car it’s important to note there has been a change to UK Driving Licence requirements, effective from June 2015
Paper driving licences are being replaced with an online system. However, as paper licences show your driving history and record of fines, points etc. then if you do not have this, you will need to go online and generate a code so that overseas car rental companies can have sight of this information.
So, if you are travelling and hiring a car on or after 8th June 2015 you will need to visit the DVLA website (www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence) and follow the instructions in order to get the code and also print this information off. Be aware you will need your driving licence number, your National Insurance Number and the postcode as written on your driving licence to do this.
This is a compulsory procedure for ALL UK DRIVING LICENCE HOLDERS, wishing to rent a vehicle, on or after 8th June 2015. The check code I mentioned will last for 72hrs, therefore it is vital that this process is followed within 72hrs of the vehicle collection time, but no earlier. If you require any further information, please contact the DVLA directly on 0300 790 6801.
Taking children to South Africa?
If you’re planning a family getaway to South Africa then it’s worth taking note of the new immigration regulations for passengers travelling with children.
As of 01 June 2015 South Africa’s new immigration regulations for passengers travelling with minors will come into effect. Under the new law, all minors (children under the age of 18 years) will be required to produce, in addition to their passport, an Unabridged Birth Certificate, showing the particulars of both parents, when exiting and entering South African ports of entry. In cases where the Unabridged Birth Certificate is in a language other than English, it must be accompanied by a sworn translation issued by a competent authority in the country concerned.
There are also specific requirements when children are only travelling with one parent, or when they are travelling without their parents, either with a guardian or unaccompanied. This includes having to produce documents such as affidavits, court orders and birth certificates.
It’s quite a hefty list so worth visiting the South African Department of Home Affairs website
12
www.dha.gov.za/files/Brochures/Immigrationleaflet.pdf for more information.Alternatively you can contact them directly on their toll free hotline: 0800 60 11 90.
Venturing to Canada?
If you are planning a trip to Canada the Government have recently advised they will introduce a new entry requirement, requiring all British citizens to obtain an online authorisation before flying to the country.
Beginning on August 1st 2015, eligible travellers will be able to apply for their ETA in advance, but it will not be mandatory until March 15th 2016. The authorisation is electronically linked to your passport and is valid for five years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.
The cost for the visa is currently $7 Canadian, and it’s worth noting that there is a full list of countries for which an ETA is required on the Government of Canada website.
So if you are lucky enough to be travelling to South Africa or Canada, please make sure you are aware of the above changes. And if you have still to make your holiday plans for this year or next‌ please give me a call and let me see how I can help you.

Nepal in Need:
an eye-witness reports on the recent earthquake.
Alan Oatway, from Newby Bridge, was in Nepal when the earthquake struck. He was hoping to complete a trek through a remote and rarely visited rural valley called Rolwaling. He is now home, and relieved to be so, and he gives here a brief account of his brush with nature’s most vigorous force.
Mid morning on 25th April 2015, my two companions and I arrived in the village of Simigaon, Nepal. We had climbed over 2000ft from the valley below, and to permit proper acclimatisation we were going to stay for the rest of the day and overnight. This was a village of narrow terraced fields hewn from the hillside, with houses scattered across the slope, and with no road access.
We briefly looked at the brand new school, built with the proceeds of twelve years’ fundraising, and sporting a red ribbon across its doors in readiness for a grand Opening Ceremony that afternoon. We also saw the Gompa, their equivalent of a church, before checking into the lodge where we intended to spend the night. A tray of tea was provided, which we enjoyed in our room.
What next? I so nearly decided to lie down for a rest, as the last three nights had been very disturbed. But instead, I decided to go outside to take some photographs, thinking that it might rain later. As I stepped outside, the step itself seemed a bit wobbly, and then as I stepped down, the ground itself was no better. What was in that tea? Or was I feeling dizzy from the altitude?
Quickly, the increasing violence of the rocking, and the accompanying noise, left no doubt that this was an earthquake. People nearby me were flung to the ground, so I went down on all fours. At this point, a nearer noise from behind caused me to turn, to witness “our” lodge collapsing into the byre underneath. What if….? Taking a rest would most likely have cost me my life. But there was no time to ponder, as the bucking bronco was still going, strong and unpredictable movements accompanied by incredible roaring noises from within the earth, and awesome landslide noises from all too nearby. The animal survival instinct had kicked in and kept me on full alert for danger – falling rocks from above, or landslides taking us downhill.
Eventually the tremors subsided, and it was possible to take stock. Many landslides could be seen pouring down into the valley we had left, but the first priority was to account for everyone. Of my companions, Oliver had been doing some washing at the outside tap and had been thrown to the ground, but was fine. Mike, on the other hand, had chosen to take a shower: the single shower resided alongside the single toilet in a stone structure about 6ft by 3. At first, he had thought the village children might be playing games with him, but in time the vibrations threw the door open and he fell out, just as the stone building collapsed to the ground. Where he landed was moving too, and he was thrown down to the next terrace, some 10 feet below, where he landed in a bed of Himalayan nettles. These have an even worse sting than our own. Our Sherpa scuttled around on all fours to check on us, and was able to re-unite Mike with his underwear: in retrospect this part of the event gave us much amusement as can be imagined, but Mike’s escape was amongst the luckiest in this village.
14
Soon, everyone was accounted for, with just two or three minor injuries in the village, all readily treated. The safest site was chosen,
where everyone gathered to await the aftershocks. After a few hours, the villagers began the task of constructing shelters to replace their houses, and we put up our tents.
It was apparent right away that this was a huge earthquake. For those who remember the Coniston event of December 2010, this one had a destructive power 4 million times greater, and within a matter of minutes it had raised the entire Kathmandu valley by 1 metre. Our onward route was completely out of the question, and the way we had come was impassable.
We stayed in Simigaon for 5 days, and our overwhelming memory is of the dignity, resilience and humanity of the villagers, who had lost their homes, and in the case of the lodges, their livelihoods too. Yet they were all unfailingly cheerful, considerate of the needs of strangers like us in their midst, and they began picking up the pieces of their lives without a murmur of complaint. Their reaction to the destruction of their school was one of gratitude that the ‘quake had taken the school then, and not when the 52 children had started the following day.
Mike, Oliver and I are committed to helping them re-build their school. They need our help to buy the materials with which they can do the work. They get no government assistance, and with tourism effectively cancelled for at least the rest of this year, they have no source of income. I will be giving an illustrated talk at 7.30 pm in the Methodist Hall, Neville Street, Ulverston, on Friday 10th. July.
The talk will show some highlights of Nepal, of its people, its culture and its fabulous landscapes. I will then cover the devastation caused by the earthquake and its impact on Simigaon, our journey home, and the capital Kathmandu. Admission will be free, but the details of our appeal will be provided at the end. Do please support this event if you can.

If you are still unsure, ask your accountant if they belong to one of the institutes and which one they belong to. You can then go onto the ACA,ACCA websites and “look for an accountant”, type in their name and if it comes up with no matches, they are not qualified. The problem with using an unqualified accountant is that more than often they are not up to speed with the latest tax law, they do not have to keep update with CPE (continual professional education), and you have no redress through the institutes if they have given you bad advice. Some unqualified accountants are charging extortionate fees which fools their clients into thinking that at that rate, they must be qualified. Don’t be fooled. Phone around and find out what the qualified accountants are charging. I have come across some cases where my fees are between 25% and 50% cheaper! For further information feel free to contact one of our founder members:

A recent rebrand and three additional offices in Preston, Lancaster and Morecambe has seen local accountancy firm RfM Chartered Accountants push ahead with exciting new plans for the firm and its staff. Local people will be familiar with the RF Miller & Co. name. The bold and striking rebrand to RfM brings a modern and vibrant image. With its roots firmly established in South Cumbria for over 130 years with offices in Ulverston and Barrow, the firm continues to build on its reputation for straightforward, professional advice on tax planning, accounts preparation, payroll services, VAT, corporate finance and business advice, plus a whole lot more expertise. As they attract new clients, the firm will be adding to their existing team, recruiting people who are looking for a rewarding career within the accountancy profession - people with a strong desire to put the customer first and deliver outstanding service. But it’s not all business focus for the firm. They take great pride in being part of the local community providing long standing sponsorship support for local junior and professional rugby and football teams. St. Mary’s Hospice has also been well supported by RfM and their clients, with many fundraising events taking place over the years, raising valuable donations to help the hospice provide the outstanding care to the people of the area. Elaine Harris, Managing Partner of the RfM, has her family roots firmly in the Furness area. Elaine has been with the firm for over 16 years, progressing from Tax Assistant to eventual business owner. She leads the firm by example with strong ethics and principles, hard work and fairness. Recently, Elaine received notification from the Institute of Chartered Accountants England & Wales (ICAEW) that she can now add the letters ACA to the ACCA professional qualification she has held for a number of years. The ACA award is based on experience and the passing of an Exam of Professional Experience which involved a 3,000 word case study and test. Elaine said, “We encourage any of our team to take these professional qualifications and we will fully support them on their journey. It can be hard work, but it’s rewarding and opens up many opportunities within the firm.” On the firm’s expansion, Elaine adds, “I’m absolutely thrilled with the recent acquisitions to the RfM family which will add even more expertise to our team.” Why not visit our website - www.rfm-more.co.uk - where you can read some of the glowing testimonials from our clients.
