What’s on in November?

So it’s the first lap of the last race of the entire weekend, I was pushing on! I could just see the leader; I was working my way through a mass of hot headed motorbike racers, I wanted this! Going into the Melbourne hairpin at Donington, I line up to go around the outside of the guy in front, I go for the pass… and my bike sits bolt upright, I go straight on into the kitty litter with what feels like a flat tyre. Turned out that guy I passed swung out and his handle bar went into my rear seat unit and that flat tyre I thought I had was actually his bike bouncing off my rear tyre. That was the last time I rode my Yamaha R6 and was proper on it! I’m sure there was a top ten finish in sight. But it wasn’t meant to be.

I’m Clare Harris, # 76 and I love motorbike racing! I started in March this year with No Limits Racing in the Newcomer’s class as a novice as well as dabbling in the Cup, with race experienced riders. I think I faired up ok. Best result was an 18th out of 35 (newcomer’s) and an 11th out of 23 (Cup). I had a few issues throughout the year with
the bike suspension, funding and losing my mechanic so I only managed to cover half of the season.
But now it’s onto next year, a full season, with a ready to race bike and more motivation than ever. Next year I believe there’s potential for trophies and I am looking for some sponsorship, to help with entry fees, garage fees, tyres, tyres and more tyres! The Transport van and race bike can carry your business logo 320 miles to our furthest circuit Brands Hatch and ranging all the way back to Anglesey, from an advertising point of view there is plenty of exposure! As well as covering the local area, events and social media.Tickets are available to all race events for those offering their support. If this is something you may be interested in then please do get in touch and I would love to discuss further. 14harris@outlook.com

Giant Furness cheque is huge boost for St Mary’s Hospice
St Mary’s Hospice supporters have generated almost £170,000 this year without spending a penny – simply by saving in the charity’s account with Furness Building Society. The Furness makes an annual payment to St Mary’s from its own funds – not the savers’ money – which is based on the total balances in the accounts; so the more supporters save, the bigger the payment to their charity. The giant cheque was handed over at the Coronation Hall in Ulverston during a special event to thank volunteers for their efforts, attended by more than 100 St Mary’s supporters from across South Cumbria. St Mary’s Head of Income Generation Zoe Guest explained that the money from the Furness makes an important contribution to meeting the £2.2 million which must be raised each year to fund the Hospice in Ulverston. It has 9 beds and also offers Day Hospice and Hospice at Home services to people with life-threatening conditions, as well as providing support for families, and developing new initiatives such as the Positive Living courses which help people to cope with their illness. She added: “Our fund raisers do a fantastic job and events such as the ‘Light up a Life’ campaign which takes place in December make a big contribution and involve a lot of work by our supporters. The principal advantage with the St Mary’s Hospice account offered by the Furness is that it costs supporters nothing, and in fact their money is earning a healthy rate of interest. Simply by saving in the account they are helping to generate a huge regular payment to fund our work.” For more information on the work of St Mary’s Hospice visit www.stmaryshospice.org.uk . For more details of the St Mary’s Hospice account with the Furness visit www.furnessbs.co.uk/stmarys
St Mary’s Hospice Chief Executive Val Stangoe (right) and Head of Income Generation Zoe Guest (left) receive the annual payment generated by the charity’s special savings account with Furness Building Society from Partnerships and Affinities Manager Ian Quayle. The presentation was made at a special event to thank volunteers for their support, held at the Coronation Hall in Ulverston.

Ford Park Apple Day:
News stories about desperate immigrants struggling to survive as they flee the conflict in Syria prompted Patrick Philipson and Tom Sopwith – both aged 10 – to raise money to help by setting up their own apple press (with a little help from Patrick’s dad - also Patrick). The boys – who attend Sir Alfred Barrow primary school - invited visitors to the Ford Park Apple Day Celebration to have their apples turned into delicious apple juice using the traditional press. Andy Gilchrist from the South Lakeland Orchard Group set up an apple identity parade to help visitors attending the Ford Park Apple Day in Ulverston to identify the apples they are growing at home. A steady stream of people bearing bags or baskets of apples kept Andy busy putting names to the dozens of different varieties grown locally. Other attractions at the event included story-telling, a hog roast, clog dancers and a craft fair.

Local Businesses lead by example in cleaning up waste Furness Waste Consortium (FWC) was formed over 20 years ago by the largest and most forward thinking industries and businesses in the Furness area. In 2013, John Watson of FWC met Steve Benn, of Natural England at Holker Garden Festival. During their conversation John mentioned that FWC was looking to actively get involved in some local community environmental project, but wasn’t sure what that might be. Steve suggested that one of the reserves that he managed, North Walney National Nature Reserve (NWNNR), had a severe litter problem along the shoreline and would benefit from sustained beach cleaning. Once the litter situation had been assessed FWC members made a collective decision to “act locally” and genuinely try to “make a difference”. In August 2013, FWC volunteers began a sustained beach cleaning campaign assisted by family and friends. By the end of February 2014 32 litter picking sessions had taken place and a total weight of 1588kg had been hand-picked and removed to West Shore car park, where it was collected by Barrow BC. Between August 2014 and February 2015 a further 2069kg was
10
removed from the NWNNR shore. The team won the Love Barrow Award - Environmental Category earlier this year and was short-listed for a national Community Environmental Award in November 2013. The collected waste included; • plastic, which degrades very slowly and is extremely dangerous to marine wildlife. • thousands of cotton bud sticks, which have been flushed down toilets and end up in the sea. Remains of party balloons are also found, usually tangled up in seaweed. • Part of a plastic recycling box from Cornwall, a wheelie bin that originated from Anglesey and a sonar device, originally anchored in Dublin Bay. • Sadly, we’ve also collected over 100 syringes, some with needles still intact, plus other sharp objects and lots of broken glass from the shore and in the sand dunes. In December 2013 we were handed a very rare Kemp’s ridley sea turtle, which 2 local men had found on the shore. It originated from the Gulf of Mexico but had been ‘cold-stunned’ in a sea current and, unable to swim properly, ended up on North Walney, carried there by the Gulf Stream. The turtle was still alive – just – and we managed to pass it on to a marine expert. You never know what you are going to find! New volunteers are always welcome! You don't have to attend each session – just join in when you can. All equipment is provided, but please wear suitable clothing and stout footwear. No need to book but if you are in a large group please contact on (07917 173294). Dates and times of beach clean events at NWNNR can be found on the Events pages of www.furnesswasteconsortium.org.uk or www.lovemybeach.org

Photographers have been taking snaps of the stylish on the streets since the 1800’s but during the last decade, with the rise of the social networks, it has become a phenomenon. Now images of real people looking fabulous anywhere are captured and shared daily by Bloggers and Street Style has become the source of much fashion design inspiration. Yet isn’t it time the streets themselves got some of the credit? After all, in the words of Turkish novelist Mehmet Murat ildan “To find extraordinary things, go to the ordinary streets!” Fortunately, independent scarf brand One Hundred Stars has developed a range of stunning scarves inspired from their travels to city streets all around the world. Each scarf is handmade from 50% modal and 50% viscose and screen-printed, sometimes using up to 10 screens, to create an in depth and colourful pattern. Prints include vintage street maps of London, New York, Paris and Tokyo along with maps of the globe. Around the world, street style evolves according to the unique heritage and social structure of each city and of course its weather; if a place is going to be buried
12
under snow for half the year, for example, its inhabitants will have to write thermals into the dress code. Parisian style is famous for being uncomplicated and effortless. With a code of classic pieces, neutral colours and Chanel’s less is more mantra, the Parisian ladies never fail to look flawless and achieve that almost mythical, casual chic look. Over in the Big Apple the mood for fashion is similar with style often described as understated yet polished; In the city that never sleeps, New Yorkers find themselves on the go from morning to night and so dress to be ready for any occasion. On the other side of the Atlantic, however, Londoners tend to be braver with clothes and are not afraid to try out something different. Rebellion and humour is at the heart of the London look guaranteed to cheer you up on the dreariest and rainiest of days. The Tokyokko (if indeed this is the correct term for the inhabitants of Tokyo!) are pushing the fashion boundaries the furthest and provide possibly the most exciting street style of all. Many fashion trends emerge from Tokyo, which is famous for its fashion tribes that are divided by district or neighbourhood.Tokyokko street style is original, a little odd and truly unique. Maps have always been a huge source of fascination appealing to our sense of belonging as well as our sense of adventure and aspiration. Looking at a map helps us to imagine a place and what might occur there. If you try out a One Hundred Stars city streets scarf you might like to style it according to its native street style! Street Style Scarves by One Hundred Stars are available at Two by Two Ulverston £25 each.

Ups ‘n’ downs and round and rounds
2015 Began at a low point for the Furness Firecrackers, having lost our training and competition venue late in 2014.
Our teams had a big year coming up with the two A teams competing in the newly formed British Championship league against some of the top teams in the UK and Europe.
Never ones to back away from adversity, The ‘crackers hunted high and low for a new home. This came to us in the form of the old shipyard canteen on Barrow Island. Far from ideal as it’s only about a third of the size we require, it gave us somewhere to get our skates on regularly.
On November 7th and 8th We are pleased to be hosting a sur5al tournament. Sur5al is a variation of Roller Derby, where each team plays the others in one 2 minute jam. The winners are the team who gains the most points. We have 32 teams from all over England,Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland coming to Blackpool’s Norbreck hotel to take part. Another side effect of no training venue is having to take everything on an 80 mile trip to Lancashire. If you are interested in becoming a skater, referee, or a non skating official (NSO) for the Firecrackers please get in touch so we can get you started. There is something for everyone within the Firecrackers (Over 18’s only) contact@furnessfirecrackers.co.uk. Achievements for The Furness Firecrackers in 2015
