What happened to summer? I think I blinked and missed it. Autumnal signs seem to be all around us.The kids are ready to go back to school, uniforms and shoes have been bought and I am ready for routine and the return to some kind of normality. Despite the end of the summer holidays we have a jam packed issue full of great events, places to visit and things to do in September. So if you would like to hold onto those last few warm days and sunny evenings then this month is for you. In fact we will be taking the family to quite a few of the fabulous events and family days out so if you see us around, give us a wave or come over and say hi. Follow the Pinfold on facebook to keep up-to-date with as many of our events as we can share on our Facebook page. As always I would like to thank Lorraine Oates Photography for the editor’s photograph.

I recently attended The Quick Step Training Academy for reassessment to retain my Master Fitter Installer accreditation for a further three years. My son James gained his Foundation Level 1 there in 2013, he is currently on an apprenticeship scheme with Floorskills Training Centre in Solihull to gain an NVQ 2 in wood flooring.

Laminate flooring is still a popular choice for consumers. The new Quick Step Impressive range has proved a real success, an attractive colour range, textured surface, fully bevelled and totally waterproof, why choose anything else?Installations on staircases are now made possible with Quick Step products as there are colour matching nosing’s to edge the steps for a professional finish. As a Master Installer all installations come with a free two year manufacturer backed warranty for total peace of mind.

Engineered and solid hardwood floors are becoming more popular also, Haro and Elka are just two of our suppliers. Natural oil, oil/wax and lacquered finishes compliment a huge range of grades and colours all sourced from certified sustainably managed forests with full maintenance kits available it’s an investment that will stand the test of time giving you years of satisfaction.

Our new range of Varme electric under floor heating is a real “treat for feet” perfect for use with laminate and engineered floors, with low running costs, fully controllable digital thermostats and a lifetime guarantee they are a full heating system for your room and not just a warm floor. Whilst underfloor heating can be used in almost any room, we felt that conservatories deserved a special mention due to large number of people installing underfloor heating in them and the higher heat losses they experience. Electric underfloor heating is arguably the perfect solution to heat a new conservatory and with the correct underfloor heating system and insulation we can provide you with a fast acting and economical primary room heating system. Call Mike at “The flooring store that comes to your door” for expert advice and a free no obligation quote.

September, again, and the start of another school year. Parents, children and adolescents alike are dealing with new routines, new information, possibly new schools, new teachers, and new friends. This is all very exciting, even joyous, for some, but it can fill others with dread.

Helyn Connerr MSc Why not try a new approach this year – to homework, to lessons, to tests, to after school activities? Try out a new approach to ‘learning’ itself, what it means and how it happens.

If you have ever wondered what in the world makes your children's minds tick, believe me, you're not alone! Something that appears to genuinely excite one child, seems to bore the socks off another. But, there they are, as mentally different from each other as night is from day, like chalk and cheese. You can look in on them doing their lessons, one quietly sitting at a desk working away, another on the telephone discussing the assignment with a school friend, a third jigging around the room, headphones on, book in hand. You might be convinced that at least two of them are not learning or studying anything at all.

Here is a little known secret – our minds are wired differently and each one runs according to it’s own ‘master operating programme’.We think and learn differently; we even have different ‘learning requirements’.What enables one person to easily understand new material can totally befuddle another.

This is true, even with close relatives – brothers and sisters, parents and children. We each have our own style of looking at things and one way is not better or worse than another. How a person’s mind ticks is natural, with its own mental strengths and blind spots.

It is obvious that people behave differently because it shows. But learning cannot be observed; it is not evident on the surface. We can very seriously misinterpret what’s going on within the recesses of another person’s mind. I wrote Learning Without Tears for parents, to help them understand how each child’s mind ticks, as well as their own. The book introduces the Mercury Model, a new system that easily identifies and accurately describes the details of 12 different ways of dealing with information.

14

Why not give each of the children permission to think and learn in their own natural ways instead of expecting they should be just like each other or just like their parents. This can reduce family squabbles, empower your children’s minds, help unlock their true potential and bring out their best.

Signed copies of Learning Without Tears are available from the author for £10.99 + postage

QUESTION: We don’t know how to talk to either of our teenagers anymore. They are like aliens – they cannot even communicate with each other, let alone with us.We are the parents of both these boys and the family has always lived in the same neighbourhood. How can they be so different?

ANSWER: The straight answer is that people are wired differently and this is true even for close family members. We have different ways of handling information, sometimes astoundingly different. This is natural. The moment we discover and truly accept this, relationships are transformed, as if by magic. Allowing difference as well as similarity within the family paves the way for mutual respect.

For example, one person may really like information, the more of it the better, and may see ideas as light, logical and fun, easy come easy go. But, someone else might experience information as so intense that they are burdened by it and would rather live life on a need to know basis. Words are too powerful to be shared unnecessarily, and should be captured and held onto for the long-term.

This example describes people with very different mental dynamics, or 'learning styles'.They will also have very different learning requirements. If they were your children, you would need to frame your message uniquely for each of them, no matter what your message was. Your thoughts, if framed in only one way would at best reach one of them. At worst, you could miss the target twice, if you were coming from your own learning style, possibly as different again as these two are from each other.

Some of us learn through pictures, some through the written or spoken word. Some of us learn through doing and need to roll up our sleeves and get our hands dirty in order to take new information on-board.We learn at different speeds and remember things for different lengths of time. No one mode of learning is better or worse than another. We all have special mental skills and capabilities.

To improve communication, we really need to learn to converse with other people, through the requirements of their own learning styles. If we ignore this, we are just talking to ourselves.

Helyn lives in the Lake District of England and the Lakes Region of New Hampshire, USA, where she works as a teacher, trainer, counsellor and personal coach. Her business, Astro Innovation, offers private consultations and courses to improve learning and communication for individuals, families, business teams and organisations. A Tribute

It was with great sadness that on August 12th, my stepfather, the Godfather of Two by Two, Chris Benefield passed away after a long illness. To many of you, Chris who was often fondly referred to as Mr Rabbit he will be remembered for his connection with The Tinner’s Rabbit in Ulverston. But what, you might have wondered is the story behind the name and where did the Tinner’s Rabbit come from? The Tinner’s Rabbits is a Devonshire name given to an icon found in churches in the Dartmoor area. The image portrays three hares, linked by their ears, chasing each other in a circle. It’s clever because, whilst it appears that each hare has a pair of ears, in fact they share only three ears between them.

No one really knows how, where or why the icon originated but it certainly goes back into the mists of time, the earliest find possibly being in 6th century China. It has crossed religion and culture, appearing in churches, mosques and synagogues alike and finding a place in paintings, textiles and ceramics. It’s significance or meaning is unclear and explanations vary with faith or belief.

The motif illustrates the moon rabbit legend popular in Chinese, Hindu and Aztec folklore but equally represents peace or tranquillity to Buddhists. Pagans have viewed it as a symbol of fertility and Christians, as a link to the Holy Trinity and eternal life. These hares have chased each other for centuries and across thousands of miles, hopping along the Silk Road from Asia into Europe. It is thought they reached England in the 14th century and took root in deepest Devon.

16

The tin miners of Dartmoor were a law unto themselves. Legend has it that at one time they had their own parliament, mined tin wherever they found it and adopted the three hare symbol as their badge of identity. As their prosperity increased, they rebuilt some of the moorland churches, leaving their emblem of the three chasing hares carved in wooden bosses in the roofs. Examples are to be found in churches throughout the region.

Late one night almost twenty years ago, over an empty bottle of whiskey, Chris told my siblings and myself his version of The Tinner’s Rabbits tale. The tin miners of Dartmoor, he explained, were a cut above the rest, having more money to spend than ordinary folk. Whilst poorer mortals could only afford to eat rabbit, the tin miners regularly dined on hare – a feast by comparison. Together we decided that the three hare symbol would be the foundation for Chris’ retirement project – an art gallery in Ulverston. The Tinner’s Rabbit of Ulverston would be special too. You might need the money of a Tin Miner in your pocket to be able to shop there but you’d walk out with wares as rare as a hare! And so it came about. In 1997 Chris opened the Tinner’s Rabbit at 52 Market Street and for the 13 years that followed delighted in, framing pictures, filling the window with treasures and passing the time of day with anyone and everyone from his bench in Market Street. Later he welcomed Liz Drew to open a Bookshop at the Tinner’s Rabbit, and finally the Tinner’s Rabbit ethos was applied to fashion when Chris and Liz opened Two by Two, two doors down (Liz later became my stepmother but that’s a whole other story!). Chris worked tirelessly to bring art, craft and design to the people of Ulverston and did what the three hare symbol has done for thousands of years, provided an inspiration and a little bit of unexplained and unforgettable magic.

Project 100 - to - 1 by Glynis Bland

Local businesses throughout the South Lakes are stepping forward to help a charity event which promises to be the biggest fundraising gala of the year. Project 100-to-1 will feature a grand auction of promises as the highlight of the day at The Villa at Levens, the north’s newest celebration venue. The event is being organised by Kendal photographer Glynis Bland who has taken portraits of people born over one hundred years, from 1915 to 2014. Among them is baby Stanley Taylor who had a successful open heart operation at Alder Hey, and whose story prompted Glynis to start the project. Businesses are offering items and promises for the auction, including dinners at some of the region’s top restaurants, a food-smoking course, open-water guided swims – and a hand-knitted Arran sweater. A massive collage of all the portraits will be revealed on the day and will then be included in the auction. It features a “rogue” image which guests at the event will be asked to spot. Organiser Glynis Bland said that the response so far had been wonderful. “We have some very generous people in this area who are happy to help with auction prizes and offerings. The event will also feature music, food and stalls run by a select group of businesses. It provides visitors with an early opportunity to experience the hospitality offered at The Villa, which is aiming to be one of the north’s top venues for weddings, parties and celebrations. “We are very pleased to be hosting this important

charity fundraiser,” said manager Stewart McIntosh. The Villa is a restoration of a 140 year old Victorian house which will feature 22 hotel bedrooms furnished to five star standards, a hall for ceremonies and smaller functions, and a spectacular wedding pavilion. Glynis set up the project after taking photographs of baby Stanley before and after his operation. “His story touched my heart and I wanted to do something practical to help,” she said. Her subjects come from all over the country, with the majority based in the North-West. “My subjects didn’t need to provide any biographical details apart from their age, but the exhibition and the book will have one sentence from each answering the question: What could you not live without?” Among the portraits is Macmillan Cancer fund-raising manager Sue McDonald, along with several members of her family. The Bay Search and Rescue Team created a Lego logo to help promote the event, for their online “tiny team” site which has a cult following on social media. Glynis, a keen horse-rider and skier, has developed a specialism for family and children’s portraits, and photographs of people with their pets. “I want to capture the images, moments and memories that people can share with their family and friends and cherish forever.” Entry to the event, which starts at noon on Sunday September 6, is free. There will be food available, and visitors can also book lunch at The Villa restaurant. The auction is scheduled to begin at 2pm, and the auctioneer will be Kevin Kendal from 1818 Auctioneers. Anyone with gifts or promises or any further information can call Glynis on 07919 201711.

"Relationships between teachers and pupils are strong and expectations for pupils achievement is high" OFSTED June 2014 Described by a parent as “a hidden gem” Newton Primary is a small village school with 54 pupils on roll. It is situated on the outskirts of the village of Newton in Furness in an attractive rural environment. It is close to both Dalton and Barrow in Furness. I am Lisa Fell the head teacher of Newton School. As a former pupil with many close links to the village and its community, I am passionate about developing and leading the school forward. The school prides its self on its warm friendly ethos and close relationships with parents. Each morning for Literacy and Numeracy all the children work in groups of around 10-18. These small numbers allow the children to have a personalised curriculum adapted to the children’s interests and needs. Whole school activities develop effective relationships and life skills such as cooperation and collaboration. Our most recent OFSTED inspection (June 2014) judged the school to be good in every area. These are just a few of the quotes from our Ofsted report: "The level of care and support afforded to pupils in this small village school is second to none" and “pupils’ attainment across the school is outstanding” June 2014. People who visit the school are always surprised how big it is inside and what great facilities we have.We have four well equipped classrooms and a large hall. There is a large outdoor play area that includes a grassed area and adventure playground. There are also two enclosed areas for younger children.

20

It is extremely important to me that the children at Newton Primary are happy and that all their needs, academic and otherwise, are met. The children, staff and Governors have worked hard together to create a shared vision. Safe and Nurturing Mutual Respect Inspiring and Achieving Lifelong Learning Enjoyment and Enrichment

Our Vision:

• Care for and nurture our children in a happy, safe and stimulating environment developing trusting relationships and mutual respect with everyone in our school community. • Develop our children’s love of learning through developing positive attitudes so that each child can achieve and be the best they can be. • Inspire through an exciting, challenging and creative curriculum that provides the children with skills for life.

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOUR ACCOUNTANT IS QUALIFIED?

Unfortunately, you do not have to have any qualifications to call yourself an accountant. How do you know if your accountant is NOT qualified? Look at their website, e-mails and letterheads. Are there any letters behind their name? If not, you can be sure that they are NOT qualified. You would not study for years and not put your qualification behind your name. The letters to look out for are: FCA or ACA – Chartered Accountant FCCA or ACCA – Chartered Certified Accountant MAAT of AAT – Accounting Technician CIMA – Chartered Management Accountant These are the main institutes but there are others. Also, if someone has qualified in the past, and no longer pays their subscriptions, they are not allowed to put any letters behind their name. If you are still unsure, ask your accountant if they belong to one of the institutes and which one they belong to. You can then go onto the ACA, ACCA websites and “look for an accountant”, type in their name and if it comes up with no matches, they are not qualified. The problem with using an unqualified accountant is that more than often they are not up to speed with the latest tax law, they do not have to keep update with CPE (continual professional education), and you have no redress through the institutes if they have given you bad advice. Some unqualified accountants are charging extortionate fees which fools their clients into thinking that at that rate, they must be qualified. Don’t be fooled. Phone around and find out what the qualified accountants are charging. I have come across some cases where my fees are between 25% and 50% cheaper! Candy Henderson, Bryan Redhead & Co Ltd

Lanterns’ light fantastic LED performance and Medieval Fair for Charter celebrations

Ulverston Lantern Festival will this year climax on a spectacular high note with an Olympic-style closing ceremony involving dozens of local people who have learned circus skills and dance moves to create ‘light graffiti’, and entertain thousands of people flocking to the town for the event. The highlight of the Ulverston Charter Festival celebrations on Saturday September 12th will also see the first ever Medieval Fair taking place during the in the town for first time, with street entertainers, music, Morris dancers, medieval craft demonstrations, free children’s activities and Ulverston’s very own Jester Garry Gifford. Other Charter Events include a Coffee Morning at the Coronation Hall on September 10th, an Evening of Movie Music performed by Ulverston Town Band with special guests at the Coronation Hall on Friday September 18th, and a lunchtime recital of medieval music and song by the Dorian Players at the Coronation Hall on Saturday September 19th. The breath-taking finale to the Lantern Festival has been designed and created right here in Ulverston and will be performed by a troupe of dancers recruited by artists Matrix Circus. The group has secured grant funding from Arts Council England to put on the amazing show with painted dancers, fire fans and high-tech LED hoops created by an Ulverston-based artist Ben Kermode. The Lantern Festival committee has also contributed to help with development of the concept. The theme for the Lantern Festival is ‘Out of the Toybox’ and lantern kits are on sale around the town at The Bookshack in the Market Hall,

Laurel & Hardy Museum, Coronation Hall, Boogle & Bumps, Costa Coffee and Appleseeds. Lantern-making sessions are taking place at the Ulverston Parish Rooms between September 4th and 11th; 5.30pm-8.30pm weekdays and 12.00noon to 6.00pm Saturday and Sunday (Sept 5th and 6th). Jennifer Street of Matrix Circus is masterminding the Lanterns’ finale and has been dreaming of putting on an even bigger show since organising last year's. "I'm so chuffed the Arts Council has given us their backing to create a show by the community for the community to create a magical night for Ulverston. Our aim is to give people within South Lakeland a platform to engage in the circus arts, and build self-confidence and a sense of empowerment through performance.” The show is inspired by this year's Lantern Festival theme 'Out of the Toy Box', and will involve people learning to use flaming fans, hula hoops and poi (a fire dance performing art from New Zealand) to create a light show on a stage erected for the night at Ford Park. Alternative drumming act The Deatbeats will join in and the traditional firework display will also light up the night for crowds. Ulverston-based artist Ellie Chaney will help people design and make their own costumes and make-up artist Kerry Turner will assist in creating our characters. Gavin Knott of the Ulverston Lantern Festival committee said: "We decided to back the concept so we can have an all-singing, all-dancing festival finale we'll all remember. "It also feels right to do something that supports artists in Ulverston, gives people new skills and also encourages a new LED enterprise, since LEDs are at the heart of so many of the town’s technology-leading companies."

Furness Branch would like to invite you to join us at our members event

MONDAY 14 SEPTEMBER, 5.30pm at Furness College, Barrow-in-Furness

Chris Nelson – Ulverston BID: The Story So Far… Monday 14 September sees an opportunity for Furness businesses to get up to date with the Ulverston BID. Having successfully passed the ballot stage at the end of March this year, the Ulverston BID Company has now been formed, with Directors voted in, and is moving forward to deliver its Business Plan.

We are fortunate to have Chris Nelson, an FSB member himself, to speak to us about the journey so far. Chris who led the Ulverston BID Steering Group is now a Director of and Chairs the BID Company.

Phil Collier, Chair of the Furness Branch of the FSB said “This is a great opportunity for our members to understand more about the whole BID process, from inception through to the actual delivery of the business plan. Ulverston members can hear first hand how their BID is progressing, whilst those in Barrow can learn more about the process, bearing in mind that the Barrow BID will be going to ballot in March 2016.” Mr Collier, who is also the Chair of the Barrow BID Steering Group, will also provide a brief update on the Barrow BID process.

Mr Collier added “With over 200 BIDs across the UK now, it is vital that the two Furness BIDs move forward positively and really engage with our local business communities.”

As with all of our events, both FSB Members and non-members are welcome. We are keen to let the wider business world in Furness know what the FSB is all about and to see and appreciate first hand the advantages of being a Member – both nationally and particularly, in respect what we do locally for our Members.
