The Furness Bach Choir Furness Bach Choir is one of the leading choirs in the South Lakes and Furness area.A chamber choir, it specializes in the performance of early music repertoire from Monteverdi to, naturally, Bach, but also ranges further through time, with performances of Mozart, Vaughan Williams, and some contemporary work, including pieces especially written for the choir. Our next concert, for example, features a setting by the choir’s Musical Director, Anthony Milledge, of A Shepherd’s Vespers, a poem by choir member and farmer, Ross Baxter, alongside Rachmaninov’s All Night Vigil. This is a programme we first performed last November, which proved popular enough to warrant an encore! This time we are taking it to St Oswald’s Church in Grasmere (April 27th)
By contrast our most recent concert, in Dalton, featured work from the Italian Baroque, including Monteverdi’s Beatus Vir and Handel’s Dixit Dominus (Yes, Handel, but he was in Italy at the time!) Clearly under Anthony Milledge’s expert guidance the choir has developed considerable versatility. Alongside this he has been keen to develop a balanced and appropriate choral sound for the repertoire. In order to match this, the choir now uses soloists drawn from its own ranks, and this has revealed some impressively talented voices. You can find out more about what the choir is up to on our website www.furnessbachchoir.org

T
he town of Dalton has been allowed to hold a weekly market for almost 800 years since the town was awarded a Royal Charter in 1239.
In an attempt to revive the tradition, build the community spirit of this historic town, and bring more business into the town, The Wellington Hotel on Market Street is the latest venue for a “Dalton Market”.
A number of customers of The Wellington had mentioned the fact that there have previously been markets in the town and the current landlord decided to utilise the space at the front of the hotel to try and rebuild this tradition.
Richie says that the aims of the venture are quite specific. “First and foremost we want simply to reintroduce the tradition of a market to the town, and thus bring more visitors to the town. We want to offer the local population, and those visitors, goods and services that are not currently available in www.facebook.com/thepinfold
Dalton and we also want to provide a very cheap vehicle for small, local, home based businesses to get a head start.”
The grand plan is to hold a market EVERY TUESDAY and EVERY SUNDAY but the most important thing is to actually get it kick started and that’s why we have decided to go with the first and third Sundays each month and then to build from there. Currently there is interest from about 25 businesses but only a firm commitment from 8, so if you are a small arts and crafts business, living in the local area, then you are welcome to contact Richie on 01229 462406.

The plus side to employers is that there will be no need for P35’s P14s. The new system will also simplify starting and leaver processes.

Carbs and sugars make you FAT! Weight Loss Challenge What Are Carbohydrates?
Carbohydrates are one of three macronutrients, with fats and protein being the other two. They are made from a combination of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen hence the name ‘carbo’ (meaning carbon) ‘hydrate’ (meaning water which is made from hydrogen and oxygen). Carbohydrates are your body’s primary energy source. Carbohydrates that are consumed but not immediately used are stored in the liver and muscles as glycogen and the rest is stored as FAT around the body.
sugar levels become low your pancreas stops releasing insulin and starts releasing glucagon. Glucagon is a hormone that helps your liver convert stored glycogen back in to glucose and release it in to the bloodstream. If your glycogen stores become depleted your body can then convert protein and fat in to glucose through a process called gluconeogenesis. However, this is a much more complicated and inefficient process. On top of this fat’s primary function is to help protect the cells and vital organs whilst protein’s primary function is to help repair and build them. If your body uses these macronutrients for energy then they cannot perform their intended functions properly. For these reasons carbohydrates are your body’s preferred energy source.
WHY DOES IT MATTER WHICH TYPE OF CARBOHYDRATE SOURCE I CHOOSE?
HOW DOES YOUR CARBOHYDRATES?
BODY
USE
Carbohydrates are your body’s primary choice when it comes to getting energy. When you eat carbohydrates they are broken down in your digestive tract and then released into the blood as glucose which causes blood glucose levels to rise. The rate and speed at which they rise depends upon the type of carbohydrate ingested. Eating simple sugars causes glucose levels to increase rapidly whilst eating complex sugars causes sugar to be released in to the blood in a more controlled way and keeps glucose levels stable. When your blood sugar levels rise your pancreas releases insulin, a hormone that helps your cells take glucose from the blood and either use it for energy, store it as glycogen or store it as fat.As your body’s cells take glucose from the blood and your blood
16
So far I have explained the different types of carbohydrate and also how your body uses carbohydrates in class. With the exception of fibre, oligosaccharides and resistant starch all carbohydrates end up being broken down in to sugar (glucose) which then provides your body’s cells with energy. So if they all end up as sugar why should you worry about which type of carbohydrate you consume? Well although all carbohydrates eventually become sugars some are digested a lot more quickly than others. Carbohydrates that are easy to digest are released in to the blood rapidly and cause a quick surge So which carbohydrates should I include in my daily meals if I want to lose some stored fat to reduce my weight and be healthy?
Vegetables, lots of them we often refer to 7-9 veg and fruits each day, lets break that down. 2 fruits as they tend to be higher in sugars and therefore calories and cause the body to release large amounts of insulin so not too many. 5 veggies that “grow” above the ground, ie cauliflower, broccoli, leaks, cabbage, spring greens,
www.thepinfold.com
salad veggies, onions, lettuce, peppers, celery, tomatoes, cucumber, the list is endless 2 portions of ground vegetables such as carrots, swedes, turnip, parsnips, we eat less of these because they are starchy and more likely to restrict weight loss if you eat too many of them. Beans and pulses 1 or 2 portions and remember to keep active to use the energy they are creating.
HEALTHY CARBS
Carbohydrates are an important element in the diet, and many of the foods that are rich in carbohydrates are also rich in fibre and phytonutrients. Good carbs are simply fruits, vegetables and some whole grains. Carbohydrate needs should be met first by consuming five to nine servings per day of diverse and colourful fruits and vegetables, which provide a wealth of beneficial substances. If more carbohydrates are needed, they can be supplied by whole grains and legumes (e.g., beans). A low-carbohydrate diet restricts carbohydrate grams to such a low level that individuals consuming these diets cannot benefit from the many health benefits of fruits and vegetables and as you know we encourage you to eat lots of vegetables, salads and some fruit. I have just received my 10 year pin from Herbalife and a wonderful letter thanking me for helping my community for 10 years, I have been looking back at the results that some of my clients have had and the diversity of my clients

As we are officially on our way to summer it’s now a peak time for customers to be thinking about booking their summer holiday. Financial Protection can be very complicated so I thought it would be useful to give you some advice on what is protected when booking your holiday. In a recent survey* conducted by Travel Counsellors it was revealed that financial protection is important for 85% of holidaymakers when booking their holidays but a massive 80% are confused about whether their money is safe. People are putting their hard earned money at risk as they are not fully aware if their holiday is protected or not. As a result,Travel Counsellors has devised an online tool to help consumers understand the now highly confusing situation. You can view this tool via this link http://www.travelcounsellors.co.uk/Why-Book-With-Us/Complete-Financial-Protection and click on Am I Protected? The tool will enable consumers to see exactly what is protected when they book their holiday, whether it is flights only on a low budget carrier or a fully packaged holiday. Travel Counsellors has been so concerned by the current travel industry’s financial protection system it set up its own financial trust six years ago so that anything anyone books through the firm is financially protected. I am very proud to be part of a company that takes its customers’ financial peace of mind so seriously. It’s reassuring that I can tell my customers that their money is 100% financially guaranteed. Until next month, Have a very Happy Easter Best wishes,
Sharon

short or medium-length black dress suitable for almost any social engagement.’ www.oxforddictionaries.com Previously for the Pinfold I put my favourite Little Black Dress by Earth Kind Originals to the Week in the Life of Test. A black dress is the closet superhero that knows no boundaries and is not lost on any occasion and this particular dress is as comfortable as it is useful so wearing it for 7 days was a piece of cake. This year, I decided to challenge both myself and my EKO dress to 40 days of wear for the period of Lent. Regardless of religious leaning, observing the 6 week period running up to Easter with a personal challenge is great for the soul. Your effort of abstinence or commitment to your challenge will force you to focus and allow you to reflect and oftentimes as I found out, will lead to unexpected creativity. Working from home may be cost effective but it can also leave you feeling rather isolated. As a Virtual PA I know this only too well, so we decided to introduce a couple of ‘not so virtual’ services! We’ve transformed one of our offices at Standsure House, Dalton into a Business Hub which is home to 3 Hot Desks and is the perfect Co Working space for sole traders and mobile professionals. Too often when working from home there are constant distractions and if you’re on the road a lot you can find yourself working from coffee shops and hotels with inadequate WiFi connections. But we understand the need for a quiet, discrete and professional environment when you are working, and that’s why we have launched our Hot Desk packages. With free tea and coffee, free parking and access to printing and a range of virtual services, meeting and training rooms, it is cost effective by the hour, half day or full day making it the perfect place to work or meet with clients. If you are keen to create the right image for your business you can do so with a professional business address. Standsure House can be your postal address for all your business correspondence and is the ideal way when working from home to protect your home and family from unsolicited callers and post. How many times have you waited in for a delivery when you could be out seeing clients? Our full postal service enables you to have your mail forwarded to you, or you can collect it from us when it’s convenient for you. You can hire a Hot Desk for an hour for just £4.00 which includes free coffee and parking, but we have a great offer for you. Call 07762 184156 to book a desk and bring your voucher along with you and try it for FREE.
