Packing for a mini break has become an art form. Everything has to fit into one small, individual, regulation, bag and while we don’t want to have to do a work out just picking it up, heaven forbid we should get caught out with ‘nothing to wear’. A couple of layering tops … reversible if you can get them, excellent jeans, a dress that can go from day to night in the blink of an eye with a simple shoe change, a scarf that can be tied 25 different ways … a style for each meal, and you can pick up your passport and jet off in style. That’s exactly what Two by Two customer Zoe Mander did when she took a city break to Budapest for a weekend with the girls. Zoe says that her weekend wardrobe worked like a dream and was a breeze to put together as she bought it all right here in Ulverston.

Furness Branch would like to invite you to join us at our members event

MONDAY 13 APRIL, 5.30pm at Furness College, Barrow-in-Furness

POLITICAL HUSTINGS

The Furness Branch of the Federation of Small Businesses is finalising its preparations for the Business Hustings event that will take place at Furness College on Monday 13 April. Chairman of the Furness FSB, Phil Collier, said: “This event has been in the planning for over a year now. With the huge levels of investment flowing into the Furness area, our Branch Committee felt the need to give local business owners the opportunity to ask some serious questions of the Prospective Parliamentary Candidates or, in other words, our future MP.” All five of the Barrow and Furness PPCs have accepted an invitation to appear at the hustings event. They are:  Simon Fell – Conservative  Rob O’Hara – Green Party  Clive Peaple – Liberal Democrat  Nigel Cecil – UKIP  John Woodcock – Labour There are a number of key issues facing the area over the coming years, according to the FSB. These range from ensuring local businesses become involved in supply chains, through to addressing the matter of ensuring that we have – and grow – the right skills for the long-term success of the area and include a wide range of related issues such as transport, housing, health and education and, of course, the promotion of South Cumbria as an area to live and work.

The event commences at 5.30pm on Monday 13 April and, as usual, the FSB and Furness College will be laying on canapés and a chance to network before the event itself starts. Mr Collier finished by saying: “This event will be all about the business community, so do come along and have your say. As always, our events are open to both FSB members and non-members and are FREE. I look forward to seeing a nice lively audience!”

In order to ensure that you do not miss this opportunity, book your place at: www.eventbrite.co.uk and search General Election Hustings Barrow.

Spring is finally here and we could all do with a little heavenly intervention when it comes to spring cleaning the house. We all look forward to those bright sunny mornings when we can throw back the curtains and let that glorious sunshine pour through – but what if that ray of light shows up all the dust, the hard to reach cobwebs and all those corners you’ve not poked around in all winter?

Not to worry, heavenly help is just a phone call away. In December Angela Cape of Dalton-in-Furness launched a brand new cleaning company. Angela’s Angels has been a huge success and in just a few short months has employed a host of Angels who are busy cleaning homes and businesses across Furness.

“It is so rewarding to know we are offering a service to local people who really appreciate what we are doing,” says Angela. “I have a wonderful group of ladies who work with me, and together are looking forward to the future and expanding our services further.”

“We currently offer residential and commercial cleaning, along with a collect and drop off ironing service and a bespoke shopping service, and as we have a lovely host of Angels, there is never a problem if someone is on holiday or calls in sick – we just send another Angel on a mercy mission.”

All of Angela’s Angels are fully insured and CRB checked, so you really can be sure you are dialling and Angel when you call 01229 666060

How To Use & Put Up A Polytunnel

I’ve been hankering after a greenhouse for a few years now, I even tried to put up a second hand one, but couldn’t quite get all the pieces back together again, it was a bit of a Humpty Dumpty episode.

But last year I had the good fortune of working in the polytunnel at Ulverston Permaculture Project and I loved the feeling of being in a domed space and the through breeze created by doors at either end. It was such a joy to potter in, especially when it was raining. I also liked the fact that you can extend the growing season in both spring and autumn and shorten the hungry gap.

The two things that were putting me off were the imagined cost and physically putting it up. I discovered that polytunnels cost less than greenhouses and are much more versatile. I discovered the good people at First Tunnels (a Lancashire firm) who assured me that they have a 7 day a week construction helpline and good instruction manuals. A friend with tools agreed to help me (once he knew that there was a helpline) and off we went. We agreed not to rush it, but to do it bit by bit in stages. We did it over the course of a week, working a few hours each day.

12

@ThePinfoldLocal on twitter

Here are the steps involved: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7

Level off the ground and peg out where the tunnel is going. Dig in the base plates and posts Attach the hoops, top bar and cross bars Make a timber frame around the bottom Make and attach the door frames and a rebate around the frames Cover the tunnel and attach to the rebate Cover the doors and attach to the sliding door frame

It really was a lot less daunting than I first imagined and it came with a crop circle, calendar, seeds and a couple of books to get me going.

Already I’m enjoying the summer time micro-climate under my hoops and I’ve moved all my seedlings from the window sills and potted them on in the tunnel. Tender plants will get a head start and I can look forward to a summer of juicy tomatoes, cucumbers, melons and aubergines.

Earlier last month, I was lucky enough to be one of the first people to get a look inside Britannia, the latest cruise ship from renowned cruising company P&O Cruises.

Enjoying an exclusive VIP Gala overnight event, I joined a number of agents as I was invited on board for the official launch of Britannia, the biggest ship built for the British cruise market.

The event was followed by the official naming ceremony of the ship, with Her Majesty The Queen, accompanied by His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, naming the new P&O Cruises vessel.

I feel so fortunate to have spent a night on this beautiful ship, and to try its facilities for myself. She really is a stunning vessel and has set a new benchmark in cruise travel. The whole experience was wonderful and it has been a privilege to learn more about the ship. My business is built on providing a personalised, tailored service and this visit has ensured that I am up to date on everything Britannia has to offer.

14

sarah@thepinfold.com

The ship has a big focus on cuisine, with UK 'Food Heroes' James Martin, Marco Pierre White, Atul Kochhar, Eric Lanlard, wine expert Olly Smith and cheese expert Charlie Turnbull all contributing to restaurants on board. Guest chefs will also be on board in P&O’s state of the art cookery school which can hold classes of up to 24 people at a time. There will also be a chef’s table to allow passengers to experience world class cuisine in an intimate space. I was lucky enough to listen to James and Eric in the theatre and hear how passionate they are about what the guests will be able to experience.

I’m really looking forward to sharing all the details about this fabulous ship with my customers. Britannia really is a market-leading ship with outstanding facilities on board including a three-tier feature atrium with Eric Lanlard patisserie, spectacular new outdoor deck show and Gala dinners from Marco Pierre White! Britannia will make her debut in spring 2015 and I can’t wait to start making bookings for my clients.

Britannia’s maiden season will see the ship sail from Southampton to the Mediterranean, Norwegian Fjords, Canary Islands and the Baltic Sea, as well as offering a range of short breaks and a special round Britain cruise. The ship will then transfer to the Caribbean for the winter season sailing a range of 15 night fly/cruise itineraries from Barbados. If you want to find out more about cruising with P&O or any ship – as a single traveller, couple or family, I have a vast knowledge in this area and would love to hear from you.

Did you know there’s more to saving money on your fuel bills than swapping your service provider?

Servicing your boiler regularly, fitting thermostatic radiator valves and investing in the right heating controls can make a huge difference.

In fact, fitting the right boiler for the job in the first place can save you £££’s

Graham, director and senior engineer of Gas Water Heating knows all too well the importance of fitting the right appliances and regular servicing. “We only fit Worcester Bosch boilers,” says Graham, “they are highly efficient and Which? recommended for the 3rd year running. You may pay a little bit more, but you certainly get what you pay for.”

“Despite homeowners watching the pennies over the last few years, GWH have gone from strength to strength because people recognise the importance of a quality installation which will serve their families well for many years to come. There’s nothing worse than coming home to a cold house and no hot water because your boiler is faulty.” Worcester Bosch boilers came out on top against all other boilers AGAIN in the latest Which? Customer survey, and as Gold Accredited Installers and Worcester Bosch service partners for the area, GHW definitely put their money where our mouth with a full 10 year parts and labour warranty.

“Our warranty is on the whole installation, not just the boiler,” says Graham. “With our 10 year warranty, there’s no need for a service contract so we are saving families money every year. We also have a Worcester Bosch trained engineer on call 24/7 so our customers can be sure they receive a 5 star service, from a 5 star company.”

18

sarah@thepinfold.com

Gas Water Heating’s senior engineer will visit your home and advice you on the best heating solutions for your home and your family.

With 40 years experience you can rest assured you and your family are in safe hands. Not only can GWH advice you on boilers and heating systems, we are also specialists in off mains rural fuel, oil, LPG, solar, solid fuel and biomass.

HOMEOPATHY FOR EVERYONE Homeopathys' popularity is worldwide with many famous names advocating its success and use of it for themselves and their families. The list is long but includes: The Royal Family; David Beckham; Michelle Collins; Usain Bolt; Paul McCartney.............

Beth Moon, a registered Homeopath in Ulverston has been in practice for 20 years. Talking about her work she says, “These days, people want to take control of their health and well-being.They want safer options, to

make informed choices.” “Whilst most people consult a Homeopath primarily looking for treatment of their physical health, it's also common for people to use Homeopathy to help achieve positive change & direction in their lives; to better deal with stress; to improve how they deal with life, mentally and emotionally; to feel more balanced..”

Homeopathy appeals to so many because it can be:

- effectively used for everyday ailments so often avoiding unnecessary use of anti-biotics etc - safely used for all ages - safely used in pregnancy - used alongside conventional medicine And, it has no side effects! One of Homeopathys' main principles is about the “gentle restoration of health”. In good health, we have vitality, creativity, and feel in the flow of life; we can deal with challenges, overcome difficulties, and are less prone to illness. We become susceptible to ‘dis-ease’ when we are off balance; when our system becomes compromised in some way by extreme or ongoing stress, poor diet, bad relationships, shock or trauma…. So, Homeopaths view symptoms as the result of a system that is out of balance hence they treat the person rather than just the symptoms. It is only by exploring the bigger picture and the patterns within it that we can aim to understand the “dis-ease”. If you would like to discuss Homeopathic treatment for yourself or your family, speak to Beth.

Bryan Redhead & Co Ltd on this year’s budget

This month we asked for some advice from Bryan Redhead & Co Ltd, Candy Henderson,

Do you have to fill in tax returns if you are a small club that collects money to pay for your venue and refreshments?

SMALL CLUBS AND NOT FOR PROFIT ORGANISATIONS If you have a turnover that is in excess of £5 000 per annum, you have to register with the Charity’s Commission and HMRC.

Hannah Elizabeth Bell, Lakes Legal Limited, 01229 471871 Hannah@lakeslegallimited.co.uk

In the 2015 budget, most tax rates and allowances remained unchanged, or, were increased marginally. The following remained unchanged:

1. Did you know that the Inheritance threshold figure has remained the same - £325 000 – since 6 April 2009 and is to remain the same until 5 April 2016. 2. The amount of money you can gift that will fall outside of your estate for IHT has been £3 000 since 6 April 1981.Yes 1981 – 34 years! 3. The fixed sum deductions for tools and special clothing – flat rate expenses have not increased since 6 April 2008.

4. Daily subsistence rates when working away from home are: Breakfast - £5 If you are away at least 5 hours – one meal rate - £5 Away at least 10 hours - £10 Irregular late finishers – late evening rate - £15 Where can you buy breakfast, lunch and a decent evening meal for £15? These rates have not changed 6 April 2009! 5. Annual investment allowances are £500 000 up to 31 December 2015 and then drop to £25 000 from 1 January 2016, subject to change. This is a big drop and impacts heavily on businesses that continually update their machinery

25 APRIL - 4TH MAY - ULVERSTON WALKFEST 2015 The town of Ulverston in South Lakeland is once more hosting a series of walks and activities over the ten day period. The WalkFest has taken place each year since 1999 and has become a firm favourite with local walkers and those from much further away. This year’s programme has been carefully chosen so that there are walks to appeal to all ages and abilities. Many walks take in local and industrial history and give walkers an insight to the rich heritage of the area, with the option of walking to Conishead Priory, Swarthmoor Hall and the Leven Valley heritage sites. Other walks take advantage of the surrounding hills and Lakeland Fells and take walkers to the Dunnerdale Horseshoe, Tarn Hows and Black Combe. There is also the opportunity to acquire new skills by taking part in walks offering Map reading Skills, sketching and Nordic Walking. Each walk will be led by a volunteer, local walk leader and wherever possible the starting point has been fixed so that it can be reached using public transport. The WalkFest also has a number of supporting events open to the public including a talk by Bill Birkett, mountain writer, photographer and climber who has undertaken many expeditions around the world. His books include Classic Walks in Great Britain, The Hillwalkers’ manual and Exploring the Lakes and Low Fells. The full programme of walks, events and charges is now available at; www.ulverstonwalkfest.co.uk
