SCuDA helps you Survive Dyslexia
So many people have been touched by dyslexia - they are either dyslexic themselves, have relatives, or know someone who is dyslexic. And everyone seems to have their own take on it, but how much do you actually know about it? It affects about 10% of the population and it’s not just reading and writing but can make it hard to remember information, to organise your time and manage the jobs you have to do throughout the day, whether this is at school, at college or at work. Dyslexia can be a minor irritant which you ‘get round’ or it can devastate your life, making school a misery and affecting the sort of career you go into. Some people have been put off doing what they really want to do in life because they lack the self-confidence and fear that they will never be good enough. But on the other hand, there are many people who have succeeded beyond their wildest dreams when given the right sort of understanding, support and resources to develop strategies to work with dyslexia rather than it blighting their ambitions. Think of actors like Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightly; or inventors like Einstein or Edison; artists like Picasso, musicians such as John Lennon or film-maker Steven Spielberg – and so the list
4
goes on…. What have these people got in common? The ‘gift’ of dyslexia – the ability to see the whole picture, to think laterally and creatively about finding solutions to problems that others merely inch their way towards solving. South Cumbria Dyslexia Association has worked with the community for many years to promote awareness and understanding about what it feels like to be dyslexic and what to do about it. We help parents, pupils and their teachers to develop techniques to enable people to fulfil their potential and we support students into university and adults in the workplace. So if you would like to know more about workshops, assessment or tuition, do get in touch and come September we will have a few spaces available for individual tuition from our specialist teachers in our Barrow centre. It’s not too late…
…to get away this Summer
Well haven’t we had some fabulous weather over these past few weeks? I hope that like me you have been able to enjoy a couple of BBQ’s during our warm spell.
Although the weather is lovely at the moment, we all know how unpredictable it can be in the UK. With the summer holiday period now upon us, some people don’t want to take the chance that their summer holidays are spent donning kagoules and wellies, and are hoping to secure a last minute deal. There are some very good prices available for all types of holidays; I’ve had cruise offers arrive almost daily for Mediterranean and Northern Europe destinations and some incredible special offers for some summer sun in Turkey.
Why not give me a call and we can talk through your requirements in more detail. You could be packing that suitcase sooner than you think!
And finally, I am pleased to announce the launch of our new Travel Counsellors website. I am delighted with the new look and feel. It expresses exactly what is so special about us as a company and what sets us apart from other travel companies. As my business is built on word of mouth and referrals my new personal page is another way for me to tell people about me and my services. Please take a look; I’d love to hear your feedback. Have a lovely summer break…see you next month,
If however it’s a family holiday in the UK you Sharon. are looking for, we have access to a range of holiday cottages (some even with their own indoor pool) and caravan parks that will keep all the family entertained, whatever the weather.

It's not just any old water either. Based in the The English Lake District, the Cartmel Valley Spring is the only type known to contain salicin naturally. Would you like your home to be a little different from the rest? Have furniture that you won’t see in anyone else’s home? Then why not visit Rebel Furniture & Interiors on Scott Street in Barrow and see how we can help.
I’ve always had a love for interiors since I was young but never really saw the point of spending hundreds on furnishings. When I was studying at university I always knew that working in a large interior design practice wasn’t for me, and now I’m finally getting to share my love for interiors with everyone else in my own way.
Rebel furniture started at the beginning of the year when I opened a business page on Facebook, at first I was so nervous about whether anyone would like my painted furniture designs I didn’t tell anyone it was me but then feeling very brave one evening I spoke to Rachel from the ‘Vintage Village Hall’ and booked a stall! Now I was really nervous!!
The fair came and went in a whirl and I was amazed at the lovely comments I was getting and how many things I’d sold, maybe I wasn’t too bad after all! Things suddenly started going much quicker, I had stalls at a couple more fairs and started to get more commissions to paint clients old furniture for them.
As I was quickly running out of space at home I started to look for somewhere I could work from, I

had always wanted to be able to teach interior design classes as well so it seemed the best idea was to find somewhere I could do both. Luckily for me I found the perfect premises in Barrow, somewhere to show off my furniture and a home for my own design studio. The shop will be opening on Friday 23rd August and I’m already taking bookings for our first beginners furniture painting courses for anyone who would like to be able to paint their own furniture. For those that don’t I offer a bespoke service to clients to give a new life to their furniture.

Local Cumbrian based renewable energy company take another step towards a ‘greener’ future. The term ‘being greener’ is a phrase we hear all too often, but do we really do our bit? How often have we turned up at our local supermarket and ‘forgotten our bags’? How many times have we ‘accidentally’ tossed away the odd sticky jam jar instead of recycling it? Well if that sounds like you, rest assured, you’re not alone. Whilst the term renewable energy might not mean a lot to most people, when used in the same sentence as climate change, it triggers a small ripple of emotion. Though, use the term renewable energy in the same sentence as ‘slashing energy bills’ and people sit up and listen! We all agree that energy bills are soaring and that the cost of living is getting out of hand, well one Cumbrian based company may have the answer to both ease the strain on our spiralling energy costs as well as ensuring we all ‘do our bit’ for the environment. Eighteen months ago, South Lakeland based business men, Terry Lord and Mark Richards decided enough was enough and after months of research they decided to start their own business to begin tackling some of these very important issues. Like all new businesses there was an element of risk involved. Though with Terry’s background in management consultancy and the technical experience of Mark, in the case of Opteama Energy Limited, things have gone from strength to strength. Due to the recent expansion of the company, Opteama Energy has just moved into its new home, The Clock Tower Business Centre in Haverthwaite; a communal office base that is also powered by renewable energy sources. In 1952 a new hydro-power station housing two 150kW turbines was installed using water flowing down the River Leven from Windermere. This green electricity is supplied both to the national grid and directly for use in the adjacent Clock Tower offices. Insulated water pipes allow waste-heat produced from the generators to be directly reused in the office underfloor heating systems. Terry Lord explains that: “We have been looking for a suitable premises for some time and our new home is not only perfect for the needs of our business, but is also very in-keeping with our business beliefs and compliments our company image”. “Climate change is an issue that affects us all as well as
the future of our children” said Terry. “Though not everyone shares our passion for energy conservation we have found that the majority of people share our passion for saving money”. Many customers with Solar PV Panels in our region are already enjoying an income from the government feed in tariff (FIT) of up to £570 a year. With the recent great weather we have seen across the region, Opteama Energy has lots of happy customers who have also benefitted from savings of up to a 50% on their electricity bills. Though perhaps something that people don’t realise is even on a cloudy day you can still produce enough electricity to run your appliances. Biomass boilers have significantly increased in popularity over the last twelve months due to the availability of a £2000 installation incentive. With the recent announcement of the long awaited Renewable Heat Incentive
(RHI) due to start in 2014, customers will actually make money by choosing to install Biomass boilers in their home or business. Biomass boilers can pay for themselves within 5-7 years, by giving you an annual income of around 10%-15% of your investment during this time. The company specialise in installing the latest renewable energy technologies, providing customers with the most efficient and cost effective ways to heat and power their home or premises. Opteama Energy install Solar PV Panels, Solar Water Heating, Biomass Boilers, Air and Ground Source Heat Pumps, as well as many forms of ‘cost-cutting’ measures around the home including loft insulation, floor insulation, wall insulation and energy efficient doors and glazing. What is more important to you, conserving your environment or cutting energy costs? Why not have the best of both worlds!

The Animals Came in We’ve been looking to the animal kingdom for fashion inspiration for a long time and animal prints from cheetah to snake remain perennially in fashion. Animals have no need to either adorn themselves or turn to accessories for interest as they already look marvellous in their feathers, furs, coloured skins and scales . . . and that’s why we can learn so much from them. Additionally, dressing like an animal is practical. If you were to travel to the African Bush for example, you could avoid drawing attention to yourself and therefore blend in with the landscape by wearing the colours and prints of the local animals….much better chance of not frightening them off and missing valuable photo opportunities that way! And who wants to be mistaken for a meal by a shark whilst snorkelling off the Great Barrier Reef. A shark might eat an octopus but apparently it’s much more likely to feast on sea mammals, fish and birds. Equally if you can’t make it to such exotic lands this summer you can bring some animal magic to your wardrobe by copycatting your favourite wildlife. Here are some ideas…. 20
was shocked when I discovered the true scale of the issue and challenge. The Prince’s Initiative for Mature Enterprise helps people aged over 50 to get back into the labour market, re-gaining the dignity of financial independence and the satisfaction of self-fulfilment by starting their own businesses. Now more than ever, our economy and society needs the skills and knowledge built up over so many years that older people have to offer”
PRIME seeks to make a difference to the lives of those who are economically inactive, but have that desire to start up their own business. Our events aim to create awareness of PRIME and present the opportunities for individuals and organisations to support our on-going work.
