Ask The Gaffer
Ulverston Permaculture ProjectLearning and Growing Together Ulverston Permaculture Project is a thriving group of permaculture enthusiasts who occupy a plot of land on Urswick Road and we are learning and growing together. The group was formed in January this year and we are slowly transforming what was a community allotment into a permaculture paradise. Formerly, the plot was run by Roots and Shoots, who grew organic fruit and veg. So what is the difference between organic gardening and permaculture? Well, not all organic gardening is permaculture and not all permaculture is purely organic. First of all, Permaculture is a lot more than just gardening. It is a whole way of life based on caring for the earth, caring for other people and sharing the surplus. It is all about turning waste into resources, rebuilding depleted soil, mimicking nature's planting schemes (instead of having rows of crops) and using renewable energy sources. In permaculture, we talk about designers rather than gardeners and the role of the designer is to create systems that reduce the amount of manual labour or energy required to live lightly on the earth whilst still obtaining a big harvest. Some call us lazy gardeners! In fact, not all of the people who come to our project are even gardeners. We also have artists, musicians, makers, inventors and architects and people who just like to watch. Everyone is welcome and valued. Permaculture designers (or Permies as they are affectionately known) use and value diversity of plants, creatures and people. We all have a part to play in working out systems that will be effective and provide an excellent and healthy quality of life- post fossil fuel. This means that we use today's technology in combination with traditional wisdom and knowledge to create harmonious, beautiful and sustainable living and growing spaces. It's not just about shovelling compost about. Everything in a permaculture garden or 'home system' is multi-functional and should be carefully placed to do more than one job. For example, chickens eat pests, fertilise the soil and provide eggs and sometimes meat. They also provide hours of entertainment! There will often be systems to catch and store water, sun, wind, dust, leaves and provide delicious food for both the people and the native creatures.
4
www.facebook.com/thepinfold
We can't claim that everything is carefully placed yet, but we are also following another permaculture principle which is start small and go slow (and enjoy the journey)! So far, we have made some structural changes to the plot in order to make it more attractive and conducive to a permaculture system of growing. Using designs found in nature and interesting shapes and pathways, we always get a great big WOW when people come for the first time and people, big and little, love to wander through edible maze. We are all learning together, so we invite experts to come and hold courses and teach us new skills. So far, we have held an introduction to permaculture course and a hot composting course. Both proved wildly successful and have been attended by people from outside the group. The hot composting course was delivered by Tom and Nicole from Laya Point Permaculture and they showed us how to make excellent living compost in just 18 days. (Their next course is a mushroom foraging one in the Duddon Valley on August 24-25 with Jesper Launder.) During this day, we picked potatoes and cooked them over the fire to add to the feast of beautiful food that everyone brought to share. Permaculture attracts people from all walks of life, young, mature, fit and not so fit! The children who join in love learning about how to plant, nurture harvest and eat their own food. Sometimes, we also meet around the campfire to make music and have a bit of fun together. So this month we are harvesting lots of yummy food, berries, courgettes, beans, peas, lettuce, spinach, chard, potatoes, onions, beetroot and kale. We are learning when and how to harvest and what to do with the produce once we have taken it home. Some we eat fresh and the rest we freeze, dry, pickle or preserve for the 'hungry gap'. I'll be back next month with updates, permaculture gardening tips and recipes.
If you would like to know more about the project or come along for a visit, please visit www.ulverstonpermacultureproject.co.uk. You can just turn up on Wednesdays or Saturdays between 10 and 2 or contact Kay Hebbourn on 01229 588414.

Hit the deck chair I’ve been thinking that if I wasn’t a shop keeper, I might really like to be a Deckchair Attendant. Deckchair Attendants do an excellent job of keeping the seating arrangements of the beach in order and improving the seaside experience nationwide. As a profession I believe Deckchair Attendant has got a lot going for it …. long hours spent all day on the beach, the chance to sit down in a nice comfy chair and I expect one would get to keep ones chairs in one of those lovely little beach huts.
ankle or knee high length and will match your deckchairs perfectly.
If like me Deckchair Attendant is your dream job, I have excellent news! Deckchair Attendant socks are now available at Two by Two Ulverston made by Seasalt. These gorgeous socks are available in
They are made from 43% Organic cotton, 38% bamboo derived viscose, 18% polyamide and 1% elastane making them comfy and super absorbent saving you from ever having sweaty feet on the job.
Now I know what you’re thinking….why would I wear socks if I’m going to spend all day on the beach? However, every job does have its down side and believe it or not, now and again deckchair users abuse the system and Deckchair Attendants are forced to take action….

Can I Buy and/or Sell my Property Myself?
The process of buying/selling land and property is known as conveyancing. Like all legal processes you can undertake conveyancing yourself or with the assistance of an agent, Hannah Elizabeth Bell LLB Director such as a Licensed Photo: Lorraine Oates Photography Conveyancer, Legal Executive or a Solicitor. However if you require a mortgage to purchase a property your lender may require that you use the services of a professional to complete the conveyancing process.
DIY conveyancing is possible but it is not recommended in every case. If your sale/purchase is relatively simple, you’re comfortable with the legal jargon and you’re content to deal with the large volume of associated paperwork then you might contemplate giving it a go yourself. However you should consider the risks associated with doing it yourself before commencing on your conveyancing journey. Amongst other potential pitfalls, your buyer/seller may take advantage of your inexperience and if you make a mistake you could be sued and/or acquire a problematic property that is going to cost you financially and emotionally in the long run.

You should however make sure you obtain like for like quotations, which should include the agent’s fees and the anticipated disbursements associated with your transaction. Some people like to use agents that are situated locally to the property; this can be useful as your agent will be able to apply their local knowledge to the transaction. However there are now online conveyancing companies, who like other agents are officially registered/licensed, that provide the same service at very competitive rates. Lakes Legal Limited do not provide conveyancing services but we are always happy to help those that are giving it a go themselves. Similarly, we work with a broad range of legal advisors so if you need a hand finding the right conveyancing agent we are always happy to help. If you have any questions about this article or anything else please feel free to contact Hannah Bell using the below telephone number or by e-mail: Hannah@lakeslegallimited.co.uk.

Charlie Cheetah – Official Mascot of the Walney Wind Cheetahs (scientific name - Charlie Acinonyx Jubatus)
I was born in East Africa. Mama Cheetah came from the Masai Mara and Papa Cheetah was born on the Serengeti. I needed to run from an early age in order to survive. The average lifespan of a cheetah is 10-12 years. Many cubs die before reaching an age where their speed can assist them to hunt for prey and also outrun their enemies.
The best thing about running is my natural speed and athleticism. I can go from 0 to 100km/h in a time of just 3 seconds !! ... this helped me to get my Serengeti 5km parkman PB in a time of 3 minos 15 seconds ... Who is this Mo Farah person?
There are two things I do not like about running. Always having to be the fastest is a real pressure. Sometimes I would like to have a gentle little jog but cheetahs are expected to run everywhere at maximum speed. This is one of the main reasons why I am enjoying my time in Furness with my cheetah cousins on Walney. They all run at a very slow pace !!
Secondly my paws make it very difficult to operate a Garvin watch which appears to be an essential part of a UK runners equipment !!
Cheetahs are carnivores and are raised on fresh, raw meat. However, since moving to Furness, I have had to change my diet to fit in with my new pack. The WAC seem to survive on a regular intake of cake and cookies which they eat in huge amounts after every run.
16
This has unfortunately meant me doubling in size since I left Africa !! Drink is a big problem. Natural drinking waterholes are very rare in Furness however I have found a very nice place to rehydrate after a run. It is a lovely little establishment known as the
www.facebook.com/thepinfold
Abbey Mill Cafe where I have discovered a new drink known as Iced Coffee ... mmmm.
I have had to learn how to “Roar like the WWC. Cheetahs in Africa are the only big cats that cannot roar. They can only purr but I much prefer the WWC ROAARR !!
I also cannot climb trees and have poor night vision but during the day I can spot cakes and cookies from 5km away. I love spending time with the WWC Cubs and encouraging them with their running. Cheetahs are naturally shy animals but I am slowly getting used to all the attention from the Furness paparazzi. I have also been made to feel very welcome by many local people who invite me to their social activities and also pay me to do odd jobs.

Marketing Skills Vital for Success of Furness SME’s
Ulverston’s Virtual PA, Suzanne Edgley is one of the growing number of SMEs, a sector accounting for 99.9% of all private sector businesses in the UK, who are making a major contribution to the bounce-back of the UK economy, through implementing the latest marketing skills and strategies. This week, Suzanne took 2 days out of her business to travel to Bolton to The Entrepreneur’s Circle National Event, to learn what the world’s most successful companies are doing to lift themselves out of mediocrity and become super successful.

“I have been working very hard on the marketing element of my business this year, and track where all my Clients come from, so I know my marketing tools are working. It has proven to be worth spending this time, away from the business and among fellow entrepreneurs and small businesses, discovering what I can do to make us even more successful.”

“As a Virtual PA, I specialise in online marketing and help my clients grow their online presence. I have also dedicated a lot of my time this year to training business owners to do their own marketing and have been working with Furness Enterprise to deliver this. This has now lead to the launch of the Ewe Can Academy, an online membership club for businesses who want to learn how to market their businesses successfully” says Suzanne. According to the FSB, SMEs account for 59% of private sector employment and 48% of private sector turnover, employing people with a combined turnover of £1.6 billion.
“It is a well known maxim, that in any market: 20% of the businesses are struggling; 60% are doing OK, but could do better; 15% are doing well; 4% are very profitable and successful; and only 1% are super successful,” continues Suzanne. “Why are the 15%, 4% and 1% doing well? Because they market their business properly.”

I thought it might be useful for me to write and tell you about how I can help you with your holiday planning. I’ve been writing for Sarah and The Pinfold for quite some time now and get some great feedback on my articles, yet I wanted to take the opportunity to let you know more about how I can help you, and what makes me different. Based across the estuary in Arnside, I chose to further my travel career as a Travel Counsellor back in 2011, after 12 years in the industry. I decided to join Travel Counsellors because I knew I had the same values as the company. I wanted to provide a personal service to my customers, and I wanted them to value my service and knowledge because they trusted me. I’m pleased to say that is exactly what has happened and it was the best decision of my career. I now work from home, doing what I love. I have the flexibility to work around my family, and to be available to my customers around the clock, outside of the regular 9-5 working hours. So, what are the benefits of booking through a Travel Counsellor? • When you call me, you always speak to me each and every time – not a call centre, but someone who knows you and more importantly, your booking inside out. • Some recent statistics suggested that people spend on average 30 hours trawling

the internet researching their holidays. It can often seem a daunting task with so much choice on offer so I can take the stress away and use my expertise to find the perfect holiday to suit you – and at no extra cost. Just think of all those extra hours you could save. • I have a local number 01524 884750 and will always call you back if you prefer. When I am away from my desk I still pick up my messages and emails • I will look after all aspects of your holiday, down to the finer details, often delivering your itinerary and tickets in person, so that all you need to think about is packing and getting to the airport on time! • Everything you book is 100% financially protected. You need to know your money is safe in the event of supplier failure and we can give you that peace of mind. • I am available 24/7 whilst you are away – should the need arise to get in touch • And last of all, I care. I want to book a great holiday for you, because I want you to come back and tell me how much you’ve enjoyed it and continue to recommend me to your family and friends I would love the opportunity to help more of you book your perfect holiday, so please, if you wish to chat through something you are trying to arrange now, or are thinking of planning for the future, do get in touch. Why not give my website a visit - it is full of information and testimonials if you want to hear what my customers say about me!
